3 out of 5 stars Good film not great.......2007-05-25

I purchased this film based on the high rating the other viewers gave this film it's action packed and the Jack Long was good as the old Master. But to see so many 5 star ratings you would expect to see excellence which I did'nt I have purchased several movies that recieved low ratings that in my opinion where very good. To me the fight scenes were basic and the story line was typical done before but dont get me wrong this is a good film and well worth pocessing but not a 5 star.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-04-24

I just wish I could see it for the first time again.

This movie is great. We all know Kung Fu movies typically have plots you skip after the first viewing, since they are a) convoluted b) corny as hell or c) stupid. 7 Grandmasters, however, doesn't suffer this pitfall; it has a minimalist storyline that's somewhat archetypal and fun to follow (especially when they use visual comparisons in fights between the new student and the Master). You know exactly what's going on, and enjoy the journeys of the two main characters.

Mainly, though, Jack Long steals the show. You have to expect great things from the brother of Ghostface Killer, and he doesn't disappoint. His martial and acrobatic skills are awesome to behold, and his dignified presence as a confident and reserved Grandmaster of Kung Fu is iconic.

Even if you think Kung Fu movies are all kitschy crap, try this out. You'll at least enjoy some of the great coreography. And if you're a kung fu addict, this is as good as they get.

5 out of 5 stars You Must Have This In Your Collection........2007-04-20

I saw this gem in a Downtown Chicago theatre when I was a shorty. Downtown may be different today but 7 Grand Masters will always be one of the best kung fu flicks ever. You must have this in your collection if you are a true kung fu movie fan. This is a timeless classic.

5 out of 5 stars 7 grand masters.......2007-04-02

This is the "Gone with the Wind" of kung fu movies. This one is action packed and shows different styles of Kung Fu. Highly recommended and you'll be hard pressed to find a better movie.

I bought this one for my other half just on a whim. This is his all time favorite movie int he martial arts department.

Description

They are all here Yamaguichi, Ueshiba, Kano, Higa Seko, Nishiyama, Tomiki, Richard Kim, Oshiro, Demura, Tohei, Kubota, and close to 70 more of the most famous ever Japanese/Okinawan Masters of the Martial Arts.

Years in the making this documentary is a collection of the best Masters of Budo .... Karate, Aikido, Judo, Sword, Kobudo and much more. This is not just one persons collection but rather 15 plus of the world's leading martial artists have contributed to its making.

The narration is excellent, the music appropriate, and the writing factual. The footage dates back to 1917 circa and some as recent as 2003.

This presentation close to two hours in length is perfect for martial arts schools to play as a history lesson or for those who are interested in comparing the kata of Higa Seko to that of Yagi Meitoku or who want to compare Hidetaka Nishiyama to Gichin Funakoshi or maybe Nagamine's Shorin Ryu to Hohan Soken's Shorin Ryu.

You will see why Masters like Ueshiba, Nishiyama, Kano and Miyazato will go down in history as legends and National Treasures of Japan.

Plus you will see some of the most amazing feats of power ever, Tak Kubota smashing his shins with a sledge hammer, Seiji Uechi slicing a solid concrete slab in half with a single cut of a sword, MasOyama fighting a Bull, Hidetaka Nishiyama smashing boards in four different directions and so much more.

3 out of 5 stars Unique historical record with a specialized audience.......2006-01-15

This is a relatively low quality but unique historical record of great Japanese and Okinawan martial artists of the early 20th century. This looks essentially like a patchwork of home edited clips, with awkwardly placed titles between them. In spite of the poor production, this DVD will be valuable for those looking for a visual list of the pioneering Japanese and Okinawan martial arts masters whose lives inspired the very concept of Budo.

What you get on this DVD for the most part is a very brief look at some of the formal exercises of these arts as performed by the famous teachers who contributed the most to the Japanese martial arts tradition in the early twentieth century, when modern Budo took more distinct form from its earlier feudal heritage.

What you don't get on this DVD is any sense of the power and skills of these masters, or why they are considered masters. For example, I remember Enoeda Sensei of Shotokan for his unstoppable power and fierce spirit, yet his entry on this DVD looks more like a Noh drama than a display of warrior skills.

Most of the scenes on this DVD that do capture a good sense of the special abilities of some of these masters are also found on Nemoto's film "Budo" ("or Budo: The Art of Killing" outside of Japan). I recommend that film much more highly for those looking for a sense of the spirit and elegance of Budo, and for its far better quality production.

If you want to know what Mas Oyama looked like pounding on a bull once or twice, you want to see Tak Kubota hitting himself with a bat, see Jigoro Kano performing his floating hip throw, the aged Ueshiba O Sensei ply his magic for a few seconds, or see what various other famous masters look like in brief formallized demonstrations, this DVD will be a unique opportunity for you. It is a truly impressive compendium of otherwise very hard to find clips.

If you are looking for demonstrations of how these arts are effective, why they were practiced, or why these men are masters, you will be very disappointed. The narration is extremely minimal and poor quality and there is very little useful information.

This is a stream of visual snapshots of many of the most remarkable martial artists in history, those whose lives and skills gave us the very concept of martial arts during the twentieth century.

My feeling is that this DVD would make a very nice appendix to a volume that portrays the power and principles of these arts and these masters in a more interesting, informative, and persuasive way. ALthough I found it fascinating because I am interested in the history of martial arts, I have to say that this DVD doesn't quite stand on its own, it is for those with a fairly speciallized interest.

5 out of 5 stars Budo masters of the Martial Arts.......2005-11-02

In this DVD you see all the great Masters of the Martial Arts including Yamaguchi, Nishiyama, Richard Kim, Demura, and many more. You get to see them perform Katas and different self-defence techniques, some rare and historical footage. This DVD is a must have.

1 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2004-06-04

This film as a dvd is quite annoying because the entire film is one chapter, not allowing you to navigate to a particular scene. The sound quality is terrible, the music annoyingly repetitive and while the "rare" film footage has some interesting moments the quality is so bad that you can barely make out what is happening. Also there are much better and dynamic shots of some of these budo masters that this film (because of copyright?) didn't make use of. More of a slide show the narration is ridiculously limited, the titles amateuristic and so all in all nothing is missed by not having this poorly researched and trite exercise.

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD when it's not stopping and skipping.......2004-04-18

The music is beautiful and the footage is outstanding. It's just disappointing that it never plays straight through. All my other dvds play with no problems, so I'm not sure why this happens, but it's certainly a distraction and inconvience when the footage is so exciting.

5 out of 5 stars spell bound.......2004-02-19

I was spellbound over watching this fantastic production. Very, very interesting to see the great masters at work.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Shaw Brothers movie.......2007-03-10

Chen Kuan Tai plays a kung fu master on the run from a gang called the 3 Evils. Johnny Wang Lung Wei is their leader and these 3 are super tough. After getting injured, Kuan Tai looks for shelter at a young man's house. Yuen Tak plays the young man and stays at a kung fu school. He was taken in as an orphan and has lived there for about 3 years. He gladly takes Kuan Tai in and they begin a very friendly teacher and student relationship. Yuen Tak is not an actor and would never fit in at playing a serious role, but this is a comedy and he fits right in as the lead. He and Yuen Bun are responsible for almost every Hong Kong action movie made in the 90's. Along With Yuen Woo Ping and Corey Yuen Kwai, these 4 directed the action in at least 70% of everthing being made for close to 10 years. Lau Hok Nin plays the school master and he is not exactly a fan of Kuan Tai because of their troubles in the past. The story is very well done and more than enjoyable all the way through. It's not surprising since it is directed by Lu Chun Ku who has done many good movies including 'The Postman Strikes Back' with Ti Lung and 'Holy Fame of the Martial World'. He has worked together with Lau Hok Nin and action director Hsu Hsia before. Lau Hok Nin is even better in this than he was in 'Hell'z Widstaff' and 'Tiger Over Wall', both being directed by Lu Chun Ku. Not only is he a wonderful character actor, but he is no slouch in the kung fu department either. The action is absolutely superb and the entire movie is fight filled. Not a single scene looks rushed, and I always love it when they save the best for last.

While the story is very well done, it also has a lot of unique director touches to it. One of the 3 evil masters is a ladies man and his scene in a brothel is not one you will soon forget. The nudity does get a bit excessive, but the hero of the movie steals the show dressing up as a woman. I was amazed to see all the jiggling, but I had no idea that it would turn out to be so funny.

To go along with the amazing action scenes and great acting and directing job, there is also a very fun soundtrack and beautiful cinematography. It is always nice to see the Shaw Brothers outdoor sets. I could have used a little more comedy out of Chan Lau, but other than that, I can only think of one other fault. Lung Wei uses a hair braid very effectively as a weapon, but it only seems to cut up clothes rather than cut up the body or face. It's a minor gripe, but there is some good blood effects for death scenes, and Lung Wei is an absolute madman with a spear in his hands. There is a lot to be happy about. If you are not a fan of the genre, it may get boring at times, but all kung fu fans will be delighted with this classic. 4.5/5

I have the region 3 IVL version. And if you need it English dubbed, there is the bootleg Red Sun version with slightly inferior picture quality.

5 out of 5 stars Three Evil Masters - "A Sure Old School Kung Fu Classic".......2005-08-30

Listen up all old school Kung Fu fans do not sleep on this one. This is surely in my top 5% of great all time Kung Fu flicks. Years ago, this was one of the flicks (on VHS then) that was least advertised and spoken about in my neighborhood. I just happen to pick it up at my local video rental store because the cover looked interesting. Man, I picked a winner with this one!

This flick is the classic case of a young, skinny, and unskilled student getting picked on and bullied by others - in my opinion - less skillful than himself. Because he was less in stature and position and was the Kung Fu school's flunkee, he was often used as a punching bag - even by his teacher who was supposed to teach him Kung Fu and protect him.

After finding an extremely injured man who managed to escape the clutches of "The Three Evils", he took it upon himself to hide him on the premises and try to nurse him back to health. His fellow students nor his teacher never knew that he was hiding a severely injured man. He later learned that it was this same man that broke his teacher's ribs in a fight. So, Yes, his new friend and teacher had history and an obvious hatred for one another. This fact was played into the plot and carried out well here. Out of pure gratitude for what this young student done for him, this teacher taught him Kung Fu to prevent him from being further bullied.

Once his teacher discovered he had befriended the same man who broke his ribs, he was viewed as a traitor and forced to leave the Kung Fu school. After "The Three Evils" caught up with his friend (who was still injured) and killed him they took over his teacher's school. They forced the teacher to obey their demands and made servants of the students.

After using trickery to gain access into the school as a student again, he began to scheme and plan his revenge against "The Three Evils" for killing his friend and taking over his teacher's school.

I purposely left out many details as to not give away too much of the plot and the excellent ending. It's an ending that can easily go down as being one of the best in Kung Fu.

The Kung Fu in this movie is excellent. This guy has a roundhouse kick you won't believe - whoaaaaaa - it's something you must see for yourself!!!!!! This young student is awesome - totally awesome! It's a shame that I don't see this guy in too many other Kung Fu flicks. The "back" button will be your bestfriend in this one. I can't tell you how many times I had to go back to see a special move saying to myself, "Man, no way, he didn't just do that!" The overdubs on the DVD great - acting - no problem! I was sold. I'm truly impressed with the quality of this old school joint.

I gave this movie a "5" star rating based upon the movie itself not the dubbing of it to DVD. This was a great flick in itself from beginning to end. This is a must have for your Kung Fu collection.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is unbelievable to watch........2004-09-02

Not a bad price, for a darn good flick...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-03-23

This is one of the lesser known Shaw Brothers titles but is no slouch. It ranks as one of their best. The opening credit sequence is also quite memorable. The fighting styles are quite unique and acrobatic. "Old school" yes but not the "superman" flying you see in today's films. Chen Kuan Tai is probably at his best here, next to his role in "Executioners From Shaolin". Wang Lung Wei is also superb, probably as amazing as his villain in "Instructors of Death". The hero's climactic battle(s) in the end are worth the price of the DVD alone. Most interesting killing move: received by Wang Lung Wei.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Shaw Brothers.......2002-01-20

"It's just you should be punished. I'm going to chop off your arms, so are you ready? Those word are spoken by Chen Kuan-tai as Chin as so begins probaly the best opening fight sequence in a Shaw Brother movie. Chin takes on all three of the titled villains in a restaurant. Watch closely as the knife expert does a back flip while throwing two knives. The Three Evils are lead by my favorite Shaw actor Wang Lung-wei. You would reconize him as Iron Robe in Kid With the Golden Arm and also from Five Deadly Venoms. In this movie he uses Panther style. In the movie the Three Evils wound Chin and he hides in a Kung-fu school where he is aided by Kao-chin. Chin repays Kao-chin by teaching him new techniques. I don't want to give away the whole movie, which I'm sure you enjoy. All the good Shaw elements are here excellent martial arts and choreography and the hero gets his revenge. I would like to explain why I gave this movie four stars. Like I said I love this movie, but I took one star away because of the quality of the DVD. I know the makers Ground Zero tried to the best they could by using the best original print they could find, but I can't give a perfect rating to am ovie that's neither wide screen nor remasterd. Unfortuantely many reviewers are quick to slap on a perfect rating because the movie is great and forget the quality of the DVD it's self. I just want people to know what they are buying. If you are a old school martial arts fan I encourage you to buy this because it's the best version of this good film at a reasonable price. I can only hope that one day someone takes the Shaw films seriously and gives a digital remasters with all the extras.

1 out of 5 stars mixed quality, not enough of Bruce.......2006-12-31

Got this as a gift, so I can't complain too much. However, the one real Bruce Lee movie in the set I already had a copy of. Mostly this is a collection of Sonny Chiba movies of mixed quality.

Some of the movies have been cropped to look like widescreen, but you can tell that they got cropped too much, cutting off part of words that were on the bottom of the screen and/or cutting off people's heads at the top of the screen. What's the point? They probably copied it from VCR and cropped it to fool people into thinking they are watching a digitally re-mastered movie. The cropping was particularly obvious on Shogun's Ninja, and Ninja Wars is obviously copied from VCR tape with a noisy sound track and occasional tracking lines. Honestly, I have duped better quality VCR copies on my home DVD recorder.

The best quality is The Street Fighter, which also seems to be the movie that made Chiba famous, mainly because it is so shockingly violent. There are scenes where he punches holes into people or pulls out hunks of their flesh from sensitive parts of their bodies. Very nasty. In fact, I read somewhere else that when the movie was first released in the U.S. they gave it an X rating because it was so violent.

Anyway, rule of thumb with these old martial arts movies seems to be that when you buy them in big collections you should not expect good quality. While it might sound good you are getting 14 hours of entertainment for small change, you should keep in mind that you always get what you paid for. So, set your expectations low with this collection.

1 out of 5 stars Worst piece of garbage I've ever bought.......2006-10-15

Bruce Lee may be the photo on the cover, but there's only one Bruce Lee movie in this collection, Fists of Fury, and it looks like it was taken off an old print. You get vertical lines randomly appearing throughout the movie, and the sound won't work properly with a home theater system. You'd be better off just buying a watchable copy of Fists of Fury, and ignoring this.

4 out of 5 stars THE PERFECTLY LETTERBOXED REMASTERED VERSION OF THE STREET FIGHTER THAT YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-26

It also has Streetfighter's revenge and the horrible Sister Street Fighter. To top it off they throw great movies like Shogun's Ninja and Fist of Fury in(aka the Big Boss). Throw in a couple of the worst movies ever to go along with it and you have every reason in the world to buy this. IT IS CHEAP. Amazon has it for 10 bucks. BUY THIS TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Adn if you have seen True Romance, this is THE trilogy featured in that movie. You just don't get any better than Sonny ripping that guys throat out. And has anybody ever figured out why that guy fights Chiba in EVERY one of their movies?

4 out of 5 stars a very good set, but the bruce lee movies are not that hot.......2006-05-15

the bruce lee part of this set is really just three movies that use clips of bruce so don't think your getting some of his best. that is the reason for the 4 star rating. the other movies are really fun martial arts movies with sonny chiba in them and they look good. so if you like these movies this is a really good set.

5 out of 5 stars Its Great.......2005-12-21

I had prepared a long and insightful review of this DVD set, but then my computer crashed and I lost it before I could post it. And I don't feel like typing it up all over again. So just buy this DVD set will you! Its better than you think.

The selling point to this is that it has like 7 of the biggest names in the biz. John Liu, angela Mao, Lo Lieh, Beardy, a swordsman who I should know the name of, and the baddie from jet li's iron rooster vs. centipede(this is only the second movie I have ever seen him in). So the story is ok, and other than the final fight and seeing john liu's leg go up high, this really sucked. It is like they didn't even try to make it look like any contact was made. The facial expressions sell what is going on, but I need SOME sort of realism in a serious movie like this.

Secret Life of a Ninja pulls the curtain open on the secret training techniques of the NINJA!

Yusaki Kurata (King Boxer, Secret of Shaolin Poles) plays the leader of a notorious band of Ninja operating in modern day Hong Kong. Elsa Leung is the sword wielding, kendo champion, youngest daughter of a crime family being targeted by Kurata's Ninja clan. Both she and the police seek out the aid of local kendo master, long time Shaw Bros. star and possible Ninja himself, Chen Kuan Tai (Bloody Fight, Bloody Fists).
