3 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!.......2007-05-08

Many of the films are not viewable. But if you want to be transported back to the 1970's it's a quick trip. Now, with the power of the DVD remote you can turn it off when the bad dubbing gets bad and the sudden nudity pops up right after a fight scene.

    5 out of 5 stars A nice change.......2007-05-07

These movies arrived in excellent condition. I immediately stored them once I was able to peruse the collection. Will probably do business with again

Some of the titles in MARTIAL ARTS 50 MOVIE PACK are so obscure, very little information could be gotten about them. A couple of selections here are from a long-forgotten American TV series. There's even a few spaghetti-karate films thrown into the mix. The majority however originate in the Far East: Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Lots of choreography went into the making of these movies; undoubtedly, there were a few unintentional injuries along the way, too. The action and pratfalls are non-stop and the plots mere window dressing for the foot-to-head combat scenes. For all martial arts fans these cinematic slugfests are sure-to-please.

Overall rating was achieved by averaging out viewer polling on 42 of these titles. Based on a film resource website's 1 to 10 scoring system, the current rating for MARTIAL ARTS is: 4.8.

The following alphabetized program list includes individual poll scores, original theatrical names (where indicated), country of origin, years of release and primary performers.

    5 out of 5 stars Craptacular!.......2007-02-17

This collection is well worth every penny you'll spend on it, as long you enjoy this film genre. Personally, these movies evoke more laughter for me than most of the comedies being currently released. Some of the movies don't really qualify as martial arts movies - in particular, I'm referring to Black Cobra 1, 2, and 3 - three of the worst movies ever made. These movies, starring former NFL player Fred "The Hammer" Williamson would more appropriately be categorized as action movies, although there isn't a Hell of a lot of action in them. I digress. The point is that there are maybe 3 punches thrown in the entire first movie. It's definitely not a martial arts movie. Most of the movies in this collection, however, are exactly what you would expect. In particular, there are three movies, Ninja Death 1, 2, and 3 that are so awful that they border on greatness. I'm not a film student, so I couldn't tell you what the filming technique is called wherein the "actors" fight in slow-motion, and then the film is sped up to make the fights look like they are taking place at a normal speed. The director of these Ninja Death movies sped the fights up too much, and the result is that every battle looks like an episode of the Benny Hill show. I put these kind of crappy movies on at night to fall asleep to (spaghetti westerns and cheesy horror flicks work well also), but Ninja Death kept me awake and laughing. None of the movies in this collection are big budget - they are all old, and the sound and picture quality is poor, but that adds, not detracts, to the experience of watching them. If you "get" these kinds of films, you absolutely can't go wrong spending the money on this collection.

4 out of 5 stars A collection of really great "bad kung-fu" movies.......2007-01-26

I was ecstatic when i heard about this collection from a friend and snatched it up right away [great price!!]. This set includes some of the worst movies I have ever seen, but I am one of the rare people who actually gets a kick out of watching these types of movies, especially bad kung-fu. My only real gripe is there wasn't enough of the "Shaolin" style films...oh well.

Now not to say that ALL are bad, as there are actually a few really good ones too. So If you are looking for a quick way to build up your kung-fu collection and love "B" movies...this is the one for you!! All I have to say is "The Impossible Kid" was the best of the worst...classic!!!

      3 out of 5 stars Fun, Goofy Kung-Fu Movies.......2004-07-26

First things first: only one of the three movies on this DVD ("The Young Master") actually stars Jackie Chan. The others where either had action choreography done by him ("36 Crazy Fists") or have a short cameo ("Fantasy Mission Force.")
"Young Master" is an enjoyable movie, similar in tone and style to his relatively early "Drunken Master" period. The first half has its lulls, but the second half picks up with some terrific action and comedy.
"36 Crazy Fists" actually has footage of Jackie doing choreography tacked on at the beginning, adding sleaziness to this hilariously bad epic. Obviously intended as a rip-off of "Drunken Master," this is truly awful, but it's entertaining in an odd sort of way.
Chan apparantly did "Fantasy Mission Force" as a favour to Jimmy Wang-Yu, who helped get him out of a contract. This is a completely wild, insane movie, full of Amazon women, odd references to American movies, a singing hobo, and even vampires! It's wonderfully stupid in every conceivable way, although, truth be told, the final battle between Jimmy Wang-Yu and Chan is relatively exciting.
Like most DVDs that try to cram three movies on them, this looks pretty atrocious. "Fantasy Mission Force" and "36 Crazy Fists" are both panned-and-scanned, and they look very claustrophobic. "Young Master" is in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, making it the best looking of the bunch. It still, however, looks smeary, faded, and fuzzy. As an extra feature, there is an average Jackie Chan biography, as well as some "film facts" in the form of liner notes.

3 out of 5 stars Do not be duped!.......2004-05-21

Okay, first of all, I was tricked by packaging when I first started my Jackie Chan collection. Trying to own every movie he's ever made in the shortest amount of time (I have since learned better), I bought 36 Crazy Fists because it touted Jackie as actually being in the film. NO! Jackie is NOT in the film, he was the action coordinator. Do not fall into the trap I fell into. The main actor, though, Tony Leung Kar Fai, I believe, did act rather Jackie-esque in the comedy department and the stamp of Jackie is vaguely on the film, but he's not in it. As for Fantasy Mission Force- well, in Jackie's own words about the premise: "If it sounds ridiculous, that's because it IS." He did the movie a favor to someone who had helped him out. Big mess that included the Triad. Yes, this is one of those movies Jackie would rather not have you see nor really admit he's been in. He shows up halfway through the film and somehow turns into the hero of the film, even though he's an overalled bumpkin. But he knows how to fight! There are Nazis, vampires and zombies, I think. It was all very confusing. You'd be better off injecting LSD directly into your eyeballs; you'd get the same effect. Horrible, awful movie. So do Jackie a favor, learn from my mistakes and wasted money and just skip this one altogether. Of course, if you're doing what I'm doing, which is to collect ALL his movies no matter how crappy they are, then you'll eventually have to bite the bullet and this to your collection. Hold off as long as possible. As for Young Master... well, that one was really good. I definitely recommend Young Master. Some great action in that one. Also features Yuen Biao. Vintage Jackie. **Three stars ONLY because Young Master in included**

2 out of 5 stars The Weird the Bad and the Ugly.......2006-12-24

These are five of the worst movies I have ever seen.

The only one worth the plastic it is encoded on is Master with Cracked Fingers. Even that contains scenes blatently chopped from Drunken Master (a true Chan classic), and for the grand finale Jackie has mysteriously disappeared, replaced by a barely adequate stand-in.

In Young Tiger, Jackie is miscast in an uncomfortable bad-guy role with a horrible, hairy mole on his cheek.

Fantasy Mission Force is just plain bizarre, with Chan appearing only occassionally. At least when he does show up, he's in classic Jackie Chan form. This is in stark contrast to his unfortunate roles in Young Tiger and Eagle Shadow Fist.

Eagle Shadow Fist is a fairly standard kung fu flick...in which Jackie is killed off in the first half of the movie. I can't comment on the rest of the movie because I turned it off after that.

Fire Dragon is, perhaps, the worst of all. It isn't even its own movie, it is a hacked up, alternate version of Fantasy Mission Force. Many scenes were blatantly chopped from Fantasy Mission Force and dropped awkwardly into Fire Dragon, overdubbed with completely different English dialogue. Weird! Fantasy Mission Force was bizarre to begin with, but hacked up and rearranged into Fire Dragon, it is completely baffling.

The only way I could recommend anybody to ever purchase this set of films, is if you really want to own five of the worst movies you'll ever see. Fantasy Mission Force, and its hacked up sibling, Fire Dragon, are so incredibly strange and awful, they're almost worth watching on that basis alone. Master with Cracked Fingers has its moments, but is ultimately disappointing on several levels (not the least of which is Jackie's absence in the big finale). Eagle Shadow Fist and Young Tiger might be tolerable for their genres, but certainly not for Jackie Chan fans.

Do not buy this set expecting to see the Jackie Chan we all know and love, or you will be bitterly disappointed. If you are looking for classic, early Jackie Chan, I highly recommend Drunken Master.

3 out of 5 stars Sweet and sour, my friends.......2002-02-11

This two pack may seem like two similar films, but nothing could be farther from the truth.

You see, there is a big difference between these two dvds. While "Spiritual Kung Fu" is very very good, "Half a Loaf.." is godawful.

"Spiritual.." is by far the best Kung Fu movie I have ever seen, and I'd like to think I've seen a good amount. Jackie Chan is funny, innocent, serious, clever, and ultimately arse-kickin' all at once. The final fight scene and the scene where Jackie fights 20 temple guards with sticks at the same time are amazing fight scenes. You can have your flashy special effects in the Jet Li and Ang Lee and Brandon Lee flicks, but you still can't match Jackie's real ultimate power in this film.

"Half a Loaf" is cat s**t. There is little fighting, no storyline to speak of, and the dvd itself makes a horrible coaster. Just don't even bother with it and keep it on your shelf just to make your dvd collection look more vast.

"Spiritual" gets 4 stars, but "Half a Loaf" gets somewhere around 1 1/2.

3 out of 5 stars Buy this for Jackie's sake.......2001-12-05

A nice collection of movies. A few of the old-world pony tailed martial arts movies. You can see a yound Jackie Chan maturing throught these movies.

About the DVD's I should say that the Pan & Scan is shabbily done with too much zoom, so that it makes us miss the action most of the time. You feel as if the person on screen is fighting with himself. The audio is also a bit weak. However I think it is due to the quality of the originals itself rather than the DVD mastering.

As is common knowledge, Fearless Hyena is a classic. Great action, nice storyline and good tempo. The movie video is better too as it is a recent movie than the others, which have some faded screens, especially Spiritual kung fu.

I couldnt comment on FH II however as I bought a used colleciton and this movies was not there. Reading from the other reveiws I gather that Iam not missing much.

Spiritual kungfu is a funny movie if you can accept ghosts acted out by guys dressed in white with red/blue/purple wigs !!!

Half a loaf of Kung fu is a poor effort to be funny but some of the action is good.

To kill with intrigue has some great action and amazing talent from most of the actors/actresses in the movie. But Jackie looks like someone else with an ugly ponytail wig and different facial make-up.

New fist of fury is to be considered a extra or bonus thrown if you buy the five pack. The movie doesnt merit anything else other than being a Jackie chan movie, and is nice to own one of his early days movies.

3 out of 5 stars Early Jackie Gems.......2001-04-29

I have the VHS videos of all the films on this DVD. Please don't make the mistake that Jackie actually LIKED doing Lo Wei films! Except for Fearless Hyena 1, which Jackie directed, he loathed them. He was under contract to Lo Wei and only broke away when he signed with Golden Harvest and made the breakthrough martial arts film, Young Master. The Lo Wei films in this collection are very badly done (except for Fearless Hyena and perhaps Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, which was an attempt by Jackie to "break away" from the martial arts mould). But they are all worth seeing, just to view Jackie "in embryo". His martial arts skills and stunts are as amazing as ever. So grit your teeth at some of the comedy and storylines - and just enjoy Jackie!

3 out of 5 stars A collection of jackie's best and worst, but a good bargain.......2000-08-14

This collection in my opinion is a great bargain at 55 bucks and is a must have for any jackie chan fan. Despite Fearless Hyena 2, To kill with intrigue, and new fist of fury are all pretty bad films. The great fearless hyena and the entertaing half of loaf of kung fu and spiritual kung fu make this collection worth buying for the avid jackie chan fan as jackie show off his trademark comedy/kungfu and charm.
