4 out of 5 stars A few facts about the Transformers G1 Collection form China.......2007-07-03

There are some frustrations with this collection; so I will get them out of the way. My friend was happy to see this Transformer surprise; however, he was very frustrated when trying to figure out how to hear the DVDs in English. I think there should be simple instructions sent along to the buyers to make their experience better. I, on the other hand, figured it out in about 10 minuets after he gave it back to me.

In order to change the language to English do the following:

1. Click on the left side of the auto bot design (your left)
2. Click on the middle selection.
3. Click on the bottom of the auto bot design if you are in the middle of an episode to continue, if not click on the top of the auto bot because this will return you to the main menu.
4. Click on the right side of the auto bot design (your right) to go to screen selection. The numbers on the bottom will take you to different episodes which the titles will appear in English once you click on them.

Another downside is that there is one episode out of the 98 that cannot be heard in English. Also, there are a few of these collections in which the movie cannot be heard in English either no matter what you do. Our movie is one that cannot be heard in English, however, we already have the movie...so it's no big deal.

Now here is the good stuff.

1. The English is not a foreigner speaking English. It is the original voices.
2. You get all 4 seasons of Generation 1 for about the same you would pay for each individually. I bought my set for about $60. In addition, each season seems to have a Part 1 & Part 2 sold separately; therefore, it could cost you $300 plus to get all of Generation 1 if bought separately.
3. The menu in the front of the CD holder gives the titles in English and Chinese.
4. The menu within the screen selection section is in English and Chinese.
5. It has nice packaging for a gift. It is in a silver tin with well illustrated CD Holder dividers.
6. Comes with cheesy transformer key chain and postcards.

5 out of 5 stars It's what it says and more!.......2007-07-02

If you are a transformers fan, then there is no reason you shouldn't own this. The set is completely stacked with a keychain, postcards, and an amazing book/cd case. For me the DVD's loaded up in English without even doing anything! The ONLY complaint I have is the DVD cases...they are just paper thin sleeves of plastic....not much of a problem though, because none are scratched. I may go buy some cheap sleeves for the discs.

5 out of 5 stars Language question.......2007-07-02

For the people that own this complete set...In the discription it says you can switch the languages from english to chineese...is this true and is there anything else that could ruin the watchability of theses dvds since they are imports...thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Transformers.......2007-06-27

It is a chinese import but if you explore the menu you can change it to english. The menu is in chinese, There are 95 episodes + the 1986 movie. Intitially i was upset when i thought it was only chinese and the seller was genereous to offer a full refund. After finding the language section of the menu i'm gladly keeping it.

There is a comparison disc comparing the 80's cartoon to restroation done in a side by side it is the first disc labeled with chinese charcters. The episodes start on the disc labeled "disc 1".

there is a carbon paper sheet lableing each episode in english inside the booklet.

I will gladly accept a chinese cover, and a little playing with the menu to get to english to have a collection of cartoons i grew up on. Thank you very much.

5 out of 5 stars Transformers G1 Series China Import PERFECTION!!.......2007-06-26

I recently purchased this amazing product and I could not be more satisfied. Granted the accompanying book is in Chinese, but the episode descriptions, and text on the bonus features disc was all in English, and the audio form the episodes and the animated movie was all in English 5.1 channel surround sound :) . The menus were easy to navigate through and select an episode with no problems. The discs are all read correctly by my region 1 DVD player. If you love the Transformers and you love little extras in your DVD collections (keychain, cool artwork postcards, a Transformers shopping bag, and a neat book) then this is your product. I could not be more pleased with the content, extras, and especially the price point!

5 out of 5 stars Enduring story.......2007-06-15

The Anne of Green Gables series made for TV is still as fresh and enchanting as ever. The casting in this particular series is superb. The story protrays a more innocent era but the emotions and relationships among the characters still ring true today. I highly recommend it for personal and family enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome.......2007-06-08

all three of these movies are superb! great for kids and adults, however the third movie isn't really for small kids, as there are some pretty graphic war scenes and heavy plot.

1 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2007-06-02

Nothing like watching your favorite movies in the world... only to pop in the last DVD and see they gave you the wrong one...
I received the wrong dvd as the last one... so couldn't find out what in the world happens by way of watching it.
And I couldn't return it.... so I'll suggest you may see if you can find other buyers to get this product form so the same doesn't happen to you.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! .......2007-05-30

I absolutely love having all three on DVD. I can't tell you how many times I've watched my videos-Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea it was called then. The box is near shredded I've had it for so long...it's been loved. Now to have these movies restored and neat extra features like making of the movie is great!
I've never been a big fan of the 3rd, mainly because I loved the relationship between Marilla and Anne, and was saddened by her death. Also the third version is so much later in Megan Followes life-where she is much older playing someone younger, doesn't work that great. But I still love the first 2! I can't wait to share with my kids when I have them, these DVD's will last for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-05-19

I've owned the VHS copies for years; but they've lost quality. Now I have the films safely on DVD, and I can enjoy the wondrful extra features!

From the moment Jennifer Garner appeared on screen, tied to a chair in a fluorescent red wig, Alias burst onto the scene as an intriguing "spy-fi" series that sucked viewers into a weekly action movie. Like its successor, Lost, creator J.J. Abrams spun a cult favorite show that held interweaving conspiracies, mysteries, and even some of the same actors. Unlike the island drama, however, Lost was really only about one central character: Student-turned-agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner, who was catapulted from obscurity to the A-list) learns the government agency she was working for isn't CIA at all, but a rogue baddie outfit called SD-6. Sydney, along with her father (Victor Garber, robbed of an Emmy) work as double agents to bring down SD-6 and its top gun, the ever-shifty Arvin Sloane (Ron Rifkin). Once that happened, of course, there were more bad guys and villainous networks to be brought down, and the rest of the series followed Sydney's adventures--always in various disguises--as she roundhouse-kicked her way through each one.

While season one was about the threat of SD-6 discovering her identity, season two dealt with her personal relations: her romance with CIA handler Vaughn (Michael Vartan), her reunion with her duplicitous mother (Lena Olin, The Unbearable Lightness of Being) and hiding her agenda from outsider friends while revealing it to her former SD-6 comrades. Season three catapulted Sydney two years into the future (with amnesia!) facing a suspicious new agent (and Vaughn's new wife) and more prophecies of Rambaldi, a cross between Da Vinci and Nostradamus whose writings and artifacts became a deadly obsession for Sloane. Seasons four and five went all over the map, introducing a new black-ops unit, a half-sister for Sydney (Mia Maestro), two new agents (Balthazar Getty and Rachel Nichols), and more bad guys before its final showdown between Sydney and Sloane. Due to the show's cancellation and hurriedness to finish season five in a shortened amount of time, some plot points and questions were never answered.

On the DVD
The entire Alias series comes housed in a replica of the Rambaldi box, an intricately designed gold case with red velvet lining, embossed with "IRINA" on the lid just as it was on the show. Inside, each season's discs are housed in its own storybook case, and a small hardcover companion book features the show's cast and crew answering fans' burning questions, particularly the unanswered storylines such as "Who was Deep Throat?" (the anonymous tipster who kept calling Will in season one, whose identity was never revealed). Hidden in the Rambaldi case's false bottom(!) is a bonus disc of material not found in any previous DVD release. The featurette "Case Closed" interviews cast members at the close of the show, with footage of their very last set takes (It's touching to see veteran stars Garber and Kevin Weisman, who plays lovable techie geek Marshall, struggle not to cry while season five newbie Nichols weeps openly). The included fan tributes are amusing to watch; one inventive obsessor hangs a red Japanese lantern above his bed and calls it his own personal "Mueller sphere." Other featurettes explore interviews with the cast after the pilot was filmed; the significance of the number 47 throughout the series; the numerous networks of villains (The Covenant, K. Director, Prophet 5, etc.) But the best quote from the bonus disc comes from an interview with Rifkin, who assesses Sloane's complex motives with: "He's bad. Sloane is bad. Sloan is baaaaad. Sloane. Is. Bad." If you're a die-hard Alias fan and don't own any of the previous seasons on DVD, this one is for you. -- Ellen A. Kim

3 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the show minus 2 Stars for the DVD-Box itself.......2007-06-21

I haven't seen Alias before. I thought to myself why not try this show out. It could be ok, couldn't it?. The show is so awesome. I couldn't stop watching. Well I had to stop watching because the person who designed the Box (obviously not Rambaldi) did the worst job in the world. Almost every DVD was scratched beyound playability. I use a PS2 to watch my DVDs. The PS2 couldn't handle all those scratched DVDs. My DVD-Rom Drive on the other hand was able to play most of the discs. Still most doesn't mean all of them. I ordered a replacement. After inspecting the first disk of season one from the replacement-box I was utterly dissapointed at first. It was again damaged. But after looking further I found that only a handfull of discs where scratched this time. So now I swapped the scratched discs from the first set with my second one and have now an almost undamaged Collectors set. Thank you amazon for the quick reply to my request.

Buyers of this set beware. Don't let the price fool you. Scratched DVDs everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop to watch this........2007-06-03

It's amazing, I can't stop to watch the complete series. The suspence and the filling of what is the next consume me. This is one of the better series that I saw.

5 out of 5 stars It was great.......2007-05-30

At first it was rough because disc 5 from season 1 was not playing, then you sent me another copy and it was missing disc 4 and 5. Then you sent me another one and it is playing fine and I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant !!!.......2007-05-26

by far the most spectacular packaging i've ever seen ! but the content blows all expectations. reading all the reviews i expected the last 3 seasons to be way worse then 1 and 2. although the first half of season five is a bit confusing and strange i still think alias is the best thing to hit the small screen besides 24. season 2 is my personal favourite, but all the others are amazing as well.

i've had this box set shipped all the way to austria, and not a single disc was damaged ! two had minor scratches and one had a strange light spot but all were completely playable. i watched seasons 3-5 back to back in about 2 weeks and and i was completely blown away when i had to leave the stunning world of alias after these 2 weeks when i literally had nothing else in my mind than Sydney's adventures and how it is all going to end.

so my suggestion : BUY BUY BUY this complete collection, before they replace it with a normal standard compilation of 5 box sets.

5 out of 5 stars Sidney Bristow Kicks Ass.......2007-05-25

Although I don't care too much for the Rambaldi Box - the entire series from Amazon was a great price. This was an awesome show, and anyone who liked it - should have this in their personal collection!!

Exclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.

Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG.

Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. --Mark Walker

Excellent dvd set. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars Why Led Zeppelin's music is CLASSIC.......2007-06-22

I was, am, and always shall BE mesmerized by this DVD complilation. It's a journey through the 70s, and it brought back a lot of great childhood memories as I watched Robert Plant prance on stage and Jimmy Page play like he was on fire. Which he was. But what sets Zeppelin apart from today's musical bands is simple: They didn't write or perform social/political commetary in a time filled with anti-war sentiment and civil injustices. Zeppelin saved that for Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, David Bowie- just to name a few. This was genius on Zeppelin's part and that's why Zeppelin will always be a classic rock band. Their songs are in no way dated the way other bands' songs from the 70s are. Oh sure, their clothes are dated on this DVD- check out Jimmy Page's hand-sewn astrology symbols on his pants- but their music will outlive any of us, all of us- and thank Zeppelin for that.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning.......2007-06-13

I am sure the details have all been listed-so I will say this: Get some nice headphones that accent the bass, and enjoy this fantastic collection.
Thank god, "the suits" that ran these boys, coughed up the money, time and energy to get the band on 16mm film. The collection of clips and interviews add to the treasures. This is the power music, that Hendrix and Cream started, but couldn't maintain. Indeed, LZ couldn't maintain it-so the early video when they were raw and hungry-and not yet drugged to numbness-is a real treat!

Also the film/sound technology was just changing in the 60's to capture the music of 60's and early 70's. What a pity, we don't have more color celluloid and 1/4 audio sync tape of Cream, Jimi, the Beatles, Motown.

With the advent of high speed Kodak 16mm film, pilotone synched Nagra 1/4" tape recorders, Eclair NPR 16mm handheld cameras, along with the competing Arriflexes from Germany, sync cables, good labs, good mics, transfers and mixes all to end up in its own personal joy, on your DVD platter.

This is music that sounds GOOD loud and rich. So rather than terrify your neighbors-get some headphones with a good bass sound, and crank it.
I heard on a radio talk show, that Plant really thought the early Live at the Royal Albert Hall performance-captured the band at a good musical stage. (considering the sloppy drugged-out future and ultimate demise)

I also heard that US Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice, has studied classical music, and in the morning she enjoys listening to Led Zepellin and Cream. I think Condi, would enjoy this DVD. Bluesy Les Paul solos added with jazz improv free form lead guitar especially on the live slow blues tracks; hard driving rock; eclectic Persian and World music motifs-Classical Bach themes, abit of Celtic folk-traditional themes: it is all electrified and in good form with a lyrical, passionate lead singer who is man enough to get out of the way at times and let the players-have some fun on their own. Long overdue-grab it now!

5 out of 5 stars led zep.......2007-05-14

great concert footage and sound covering various stages of the band. a must for zepplin fans.

5 out of 5 stars Newbury Comics is Top 3 Shipper/Service Ever! Dvd is.........2007-05-13

I thought, a very moving look at the band through Page's eyes and heart.
KIller end of concert "filler" tv shows in Europe. Wow! Don't miss the last footage from 79' where Plant and Page are strangers on stage; you can actually feel the tension as they perform (Plant left at end of this tour).
Having played frisbee with Plant and JP on a Malibu beach in 73', I was moved by the sincerity Page reveals (if you look!)

For one-stop convenience, you can't beat this handy compilation of Laurel & Hardy classics. Although it's modestly priced and packaged, this DVD packs plenty of extras along with Stan & Ollie's finest feature and several of the comedy duo's best-loved "talkie" shorts. Sons of the Desert (1933) is the crown jewel in any L&H collection, and with Charley Chase as their stellar comedy costar, the boys reached the pinnacle of their unique partnership, playing a pair of Fez-wearing "Sons of the Desert" sneaking off to a convention in Chicago, but their wives discover the ruse with hilarious results. For L&H fans, it simply doesn't get any better than this, although 1932's "The Music Box" shares equal status--and a 1932 Oscar® for Best Comedy Short--in the L&H pantheon. The remaining shorts on the disc ("Another Fine Mess," "Busy Bodies," and "County Hospital") were produced during the prime of Stan & Ollie's sound-era success (1930-33), each boasting their own timeless bits and flawless routines. Abundant laughs are virtually guaranteed.

Most of the bonus material pays tribute to legendary comedy producer Hal Roach, who first partnered Stan & Ollie in 1926. A film-clip tribute includes interviews with comedy greats like Mel Brooks and Steve Allen, and on-screen articles explore Roach's career in greater detail. A "then and now" photo tour provides an historic tour of Roach Studio locations in Culver City, California, and text biographies are provided for Roach, Laurel, and Hardy. In addition to the films themselves (which never looked or sounded better), these extras make this Laurel & Hardy DVD a perfect choice for old and new fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

Being an avid fan of Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy down through the years, I really appreciated the Digitally Remastered versions of "Sons Of The Desert", "The Music Box", "Another Fine Mess", "Busy Bodies" and "County Hospital." The feature film "Sons Of The Desert" is one of my absolute favorites of their collected full length works. It is only rarely that one views a modern comedy of the quality these two portrayed.

5 out of 5 stars a forgotten star shines again!.......2007-06-26

Although Tyrone Power is probably a forgotten star to many, this collection of some of his most exciting adventure films reminds those who remember him, or those who are at least familiar with some of his work, what star power once meant during the "Golden Age of Hollywood". Each of the films are my personal favorites, and the DVDs in the collection contain some interesting extras such as interviews with Power's surviving family members and former co-stars, as well as audio commentaries film historians, film composers, and other film professionals. Each DVD also contains separate audio track of each film's original soundtrack. The "Blood and Sand" DVD transfer uses a recently restored print that brings to life the film's original "old fashioned" bold and vivid Technicolor. All in all, this collection is definitely worth owning whether you're a fan or just interested in a star whose name rarely heard anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Tyrone Power the movie star shines here. For Tyrone Power the actor, see Nightmare Alley.......2007-06-13

Tyrone Power was too earnest and straight forward to be a great actor, but he had what it takes to be a great movie star. The earnestness of his acting made him likable, even in those rare occasions when he played a heel. He was startlingly handsome as a young man. Even as his looks matured after WWII, he maintained his status as a romantic leading man up to his death of a heart attack when he was 49. As a heel, a hero or as a period swashbuckler, Power had that undefinable quality that made people want to buy tickets to his movies. These five swashbucklers, as variable in quality and corniness as they are, give a fine picture of Tyrone Power, movie star. He had to fight to be taken seriously as an actor, so I hope everyone who buys this set will also take a look at Power in Nightmare Alley (1947). The characters he plays in this set -- Juan Gallardo, Benjamin Blake, Pedro de Vargas, Andrea Orsini, Walter of Gurnie -- you'll probably forget. You'll remember Power as Stanton Carlisle.

Blood and Sand (1941) -- Blood and Sand is not a swashbuckler, but an allegory of a man's pride, lust and ambition, played out in the bullring, about a man who is redeemed by the love of a good woman and a death ennobled by regret. In other words, the movie is a Hollywood weeper. Still, it shows what can be accomplished when professionals take hold of a teary melodrama and give it color, sleekness, sex and, at 27, an extraordinarily handsome leading man in Tyrone Power. Rita Hayworth, as the femme fatale, is almost as pretty.

Son of Fury (1942) -- If Son of Fury were the title of a paperback novel, we'd expect a bodice-ripping, heavy-breathing Regency romance. What we have is a highly professional Darryl F. Zanuck adventure of surprising innocence and charm. Everything about the movie, from the actors to the script to the cinematography, features such a high level of craftsmanship that the few corny moments pass quickly. The story, even with a stolen inheritance, a wicked uncle and a South Seas cutie, is told with such professional attention to naivety that we cheer for Ben, hiss his uncle, and even find the unlikely conclusion satisfying.

Captain from Castile (1947) - If Captain from Castile is remembered much today it probably is because of one of the most rousing marches a Hollywood composer ever wrote. The "Conquest" theme is heard only three times, and the first two are brief but effective scene setters. We have to wait until the movie is almost over and Hernan Cortez is setting out on his march to the Aztec capital of Tenochititlan for the full treatment. The music, by Alfred Newman, embraces the moment, with hundreds of soldiers, the priests, the natives, the hangers-on spreading out before us, the horizon lightening and a single volcano smoking in the distance. The theme is inspiring, martial, emotional, uplifting and memorable. It's enough to make most movie goers want to sign up and most historians queasy. After all, in less than a generation a civilization of between 2 million and 6 million people was obliterated.

Prince of Foxes (1949) -- If passionate love, convivial betrayals and loyalty one can change as quickly as one's shirt intrigues you, you'll most likely enjoy Prince of Foxes. If nothing else, you'll learn a great party trick that involves two eyeballs and two thumbs. Prince of Foxes, in my view, is one of the best of the Tyrone Power adventure films. It stands out in part because we find ourselves operating in the lusty, double-dealing world of Cesare Borgia. And while Orson Welles, who plays Borgia, can't resist slicing the ham with gusto, it must be admitted that he brings a lot of joie de vivre to villainy.

The Black Rose (1950) -- And what's a black rose? We're told it is the name given to the clove, the most precious of spices. In this case, the clove is Maryam, played by Cecile Aubry. She was a small French actress who looks no older than 14. She has a small mouth which is filled with tiny teeth and a plump tongue, and she occasionally jumps about to express enthusiasm. If Vera-Ellen and Charlie McCarthy had ever had a child, it would look a lot like Cecile Aubry. The movie, The Black Rose, is no stinker, but the one insuperable drawback is its disjointed nature. We move from Norman England 200 years after William the Conqueror, to the middle-east and then on to a Mongol army moving and battling its way toward China, then to the imperial court of China itself, and finally back to England. It seems to me to be one of Power's weakest romantic-adventure films.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't get the Urge.......2007-06-29

As a new viewer to naturo I purchased all three uncut english version sets with the idea of watching them over time. Bad move. I watched the entire three sets in two days. I would have watched them in one day but work got in the way. We all know this is one of the most outstanding Anime series and the question of "in original language" or English dubbed is an interesting one. "The Urge" commented in his review that things where missing and not the same between the two versions. Not having seen the Japanese original language version he could be right; however, the examples he gave about the "sexy-Jutsu" and Sauske/naruto being edited out was untrue. It's all there. The rest, well I don't know. I'm hoping the term "uncut" means it is as close to the original as possible in a language change. That would be true if in subtitles or dubbed. Bottom line is it's a great series in English and if it's better in Japanese so be it. There are a lot of Animes out there and most certainly are not that good. So when one comes along that is terrific, such as Naruto, enjoy it in whatever language you can enjoy the most.
    Better Believe It.

5 out of 5 stars It keeps getting better.......2007-06-07

As an owner of the previous three volumes, i have come to realize that Naruto keeps getting better as the episodes go on. Think about it, the first volume just showed them struggle as pathetic ninja. The second volume shows them mature a little enough to survive their first mission and the first part of the chunin exam. And now the third volume shows them grow huge bounds as each character grows greatly from the first episode. and it is only going to get better as the four volume features the ten fights of the preliminary round of the third part of the chunin exams. Most of the fights are intriguing, especially the one between rock lee and that wierd ude with the sand thing on his back. This volume looks to be the best yet, and it will only get better. My only wish is that they would release these uncut volumes faster because this show is very addicting.

    3 out of 5 stars Different versions?.......2007-06-01

Anyone takeing the time to read the reviews already knows that Naruto is a great cartoon. That's why you're looking it up-either someone told you about it or you've actually watched the cartoon and like it enough to want to buy it. I am in the second category. So why did I give Naruto a 3 out 5 star rating? Simple. The english version sucks. Although I have not seen this particular version for sale as it has not yet come out, the product description listed on volume 4 says that the languge is in english and the product description for the previous volume 3 says that the languge is in Japanese(dubbed) So take your chances when it comes out I guess? Anyways. what's the big deal right? So what if it's in english? I can understand it better right? Well yes and no. Since I obviously can't compare both versions at the moment, I am assuming that they may use the Cartoon Network english version. The biggest difference between the 2 versions is that the japanese version is alot funnier, deeper, less corny, and makes more sense, but most importantly doesn't change anything to make the cartoon more western friendly or easier to understand. For example, in the early episodes, they cut out all the hilarious stuff like when Naruto kisses Sauske. In the english cartoon network version they do some editing to allude to the kiss instead of actually showing it. Of course, most of Naruto's "Sexy-Jutsu," gets edited out as well. There's so many changes and edits to make it western firendly that the enlish version loses a lot of the goof type comedy and way too much of the emotional draw that the japanese version has. One of the best things that the Naruto series does is convey the self-sacrifice type heroisim well. Most japanese cartoons that I've seen are not able to bring that feeling over-most of the time it comes across as non-sensical, overly dramatic, and gets lost in translation somehow. The japanses version brings the feeling across better with a combination of better voice acting, dialoge, and visual organization/editing. Take for example the recent episode on Cartoon Network. Naruto is in the second stage of learning the Rasengan attack. He trys to get the perverted hermit to stay and train him, then throws the rubber ball at him in frustration. In the japanese version, the perverted hermit shouts "KA KA KA KA! Strike!" In the english version, they edit out the first "KA KA KA KA!" and just rerun the "STRIKE!" followed by the fakest Naruto laugh. You stay with Naruto and understand why he's laughing in the Japense version. The english version of this scene is just one of the many examples of bad acting and bad editing that made a funny scene flat.

There are better examples of both the goofy moments and the emotional ones, but I don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't watched them yet. As other people have said, later on around episode 200 or so they start the Hurrican Chronicles and the series starts to get really good. Hopefully they release the Japanese version in the U.S. or you have a friend in Japan that is a fan and will send it to you.

    5 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2007-05-08

Naruto is a great series and it's even better uncut! I can't wait for this to come out!

4 out of 5 stars A Blast from my past........2007-06-05

I first saw these serials in the movie theatres in the 1940's. They were part of the magical joy of a child's early life, which brought us back to that same theatre every Saturday matinee until we had seen all the episodes. In those days one could see a triple feature, the Flash Gordon serial, and cartoons for 9 cents at the Old Loma Theatre in Burbank, California.
Later, in the early 1950's they appeared on television for the first time. Even the adults were part of the audience. Crude as those early special effects were, they just delighted my whole generation.
Now, all three of the serials are available for a huge savings on DVD, about the same price for one individual movie. Step back into time and relive another era, sadly gone forever.

4 out of 5 stars Flashing on Memory.......2007-05-19

Those of us who grew up in the 1950s, first saw most of these episodes on TV. Originally designed as weekly serials in the 1930s to be shown in theatres before the main feature, they were among our earliest entrees into the genre of science fiction and fantasy films. Still showing on TV into the 1970s, they suddenly vanished from view thereafter and are only now available in their entirety on DVD. Seeing them again is a revelation on more than one level. It never occurred to us as kids just how overacted was Buster Crabbe's portrayal of Flash Gordon, and it's a hoot to witness now. There's more unintentional humor than anything else in these volumes, but you'll also see images your brain has forgotten and you'll howl at the "flash" backs. The impossibly goofy spaceships, the gila monster lizard dragons, The Emperor Ming, Professor Zarkov, Prince Baron, the great sexless Dale, and all the gang are here. If you've got kids, they'll laugh along with you and wonder how a generation could be so entranced by such phony yet entertaining technology, back before there was any real technology to speak of. By the time you get to the 3rd DVD, the similar plotlines (what plotlines there are) begin to grow tired. But you can always pull this stuff out again for a good laugh and a warm stroll down memory lane. Note: Obviously, Steven Spielberg was well acquainted with these serials and you'll enjoy seeing his inspiration for the initial Star Wars movie on DVD 2 here.

    4 out of 5 stars Youth Revisited.......2007-05-12

As a youth I used to go to movies on Saturday to see the Flash Gordon episodes. Those were the days (1930s) when they gave away free dishes to attract the more mature crowd. The quality of these DVDs is very good and I have enjoyed seeing Flash and Ming and the rest of the crowd again.

    I am happy with it.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Sci-Fi Serials!.......2007-02-16

Flash Gordon is a superhero in his own right. Created for Alex Raymond's 1934-1945 Sunday comic strip, Gordon is an all-American hero, who travels to the alien planet Mongo with the lovely Dale Arden and brilliant scientist, Dr. Hans Zarkov. On the strange planet, the three Earthlings encounter savage monsters, and Ming the Merciless--the most cruel dictator in the Universe.

The first of the serials--"Flash Gordon" (1936)--is the best. This continuity does Raymond's original vision a great justice. The first two years of the strip are roughly chronicled here, with innovations (what they are I won't tell you, because they occur at the end). If read Checker Books' first Flash Gordon volume, then you basically have a novelization of this serial. Buster Crabbe, Jean Rogers, Frank Shannon, Charles Middleton, Priscilla Lawson and John Lipson star.

"Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" (1938) pick up right where the first serial left off. In order to save Earth from the diabolical plans of Ming and witch-queen, Azura, Flash and company must ally themselves with the Clay People of Mars. Crabbe, Rogers, Shannon and Middleton.

Buster Crabbe, Frank Shannon and Charles Middleton were reunited in the final chapter of the Flash trilogy, "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (1940). Though this is the weakest of the series (barely any monsters, weak acting, and overused plot), there is a note of finality as the ruthless Ming defiantly declares, "I am the Universe!"

Of all the serials I have seen, Universal's Flash Gordons are the best. One of the things I admire the most about all of the Gordon serials are that you never see any strings or anything in all the rocket ship scenes. Even in "Batman," (1943) strings were evident in the plane used in one of the chapters. B-movie serials, yet great period quality invested in them.

A decade after their last hilarious short, the Oscar-winning A Close Shave, Claymation wonders Wallace and Gromit return for a full-length adventure. Daffy scientist Wallace (voiced by Peter Sallis) and his heroic dog Gromit are doing well with their business, Anti-Pesto, a varmint-hunting outfit designed to keep their English town safe from rabbits chomping on prized vegetables. Wallace meets Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter), who appreciates Wallace's humane way of dealing with rabbits (courtesy of the Bun-Vac 6000), and sets up a rivalry with the gun-toting Victor Quartermaine (Ralph Fiennes, enjoying himself more than ever). Creator Nick Park, with co-director/writer Steve Box, delivers a story worthy of the 85-minute running time, although it stretches the act a bit; the formula plays better shorter, but the literally hand-crafted film is a joy to watch. Taking a chapter from classic horror films, a giant were-rabbit is soon on the prowl, and the town is up in arms, what with the annual vegetable contest close at hand. (Anyone who's seen the previous three shorts knows who saves the day.) Never content to do something simply when the extravagant will do, W&G's lives are filled with whimsical Rude Goldberg-style devices, and the opening number showcasing their alarm system is pure Aardman Animation at its finest. Even though there's a new twist here--a few mild sight gags aimed at adults--this G-rated film will delight young and old alike as Park, like team Pixar, seems incapable of making anything but an outstanding film. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars A fun movie for the whole family.......2007-06-05

The adults love this film and so do the kids. What can I say except that it is such a fun film...the characters are lovable and there are laughs galore. Wallace is so sweet when he falls for Lady Tottington and Gromit is always there to get him out of trouble. Five stars!

    5 out of 5 stars A classic! .......2007-05-16

This was my introduction to Wallace and Gromit, two very charming characters. Wallace, a cheese-obsessed British chap, and Gromit, his silent but very expressive sidekick dog (who can make tea, drive, etc.) have a humane pest control business named "Anti-pesto." Yes the puns run rampant throughout this film, from the jar of "Middle Age Spread" on the kitchen table, to the classic novels with altered cheese-themed titles ("Waiting for Gouda," "Grated Expectations," etc.)among many others. The film is rich with texture and humor. The sets are delightful, from the charming British neighborhoods to the manor house of Lady Tottington. The plot is about an experiment of Wallace's that goes awry leading to the creation of a giant, vegetable devouring rabbit that comes out at night with the full moon and devours the gardens of the townfolk, including the prized oversize vegetables they're nurturing for a vegetable competition at Tottington's estate. Tottington summons Anti-pesto to contain the beast, much to the chagrin of her bunny-blood-thirsty hunter fiance, Victor Quartermaine, who would love to "bag her bunny" and be the local hero with a furry trophy. The film is beautiful to watch and full of visual humor and clever dialogue and gags of all sorts. Pay attention to Lady Tottington's outfits suggestive of certain vegetables and some mild humor in the style of Benny Hill. Be sure to read anything in print--the tongue-in-cheek humor is planted throughout the film. The music score is wonderful and the filming style is very effective. Be sure to watch the behind the scenes video to gain an appreciation of how painstakingly and lovingly the film was put together by its creators. My husband and 3 year old daughters love this movie. There's humor for everyone, any gender, any age. We watch it all the time. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars 14 carrot movie.......2007-05-12

This is about a clever a movie as I have ever seen. From the claymation (if that is the correct word) to the story, and especially the puns. There is always something new to find in re-watching it. I get the impression that a lot of time and care went into the making of this movie in every aspect, and it is hilarious, a spoof of "horror" movies, a critique of the British social structure, and the list goes on and on. I am not a Brit, and there are probably things I don't get, but this is a ninth inning home run in the world series of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Entertainment plus for all ages.......2007-05-11

This movie is awesome. It is very entertaining for adults and kids alike. And the characters are adorable. This is one of those movies you can watch over and over again.
Gromit has always been one of my favourite characters and he shines in this film. Another winner from the guys that brought us chicken run, this is their best yet...

4 out of 5 stars the world's first vegetarian horror movie.......2007-05-11

The movie by itself is fun to watch, but the DVD is full of extras that both kids and claymation fans will enjoy. In addition to deleted/alternative scenes and director Nick Park's commentary, there are the following featurettes:

Goes to Hollywood - traces the history of Wallace and Gromit from when Nick Park was still in film school trying to make A Grand Day Out to The Wrong Trousers (1993) and A Close Shave (1995) winning Oscars for Best Short Animated Film. It includes a clip of Wallace speaking in French, and shorter ones of him doing German, Chinese and Japanese.

Behind the Scenes - shows not only the sets but also the voices behind Wallace (Peter Sallis), Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter) and Victor (Ralph Fiennes).

Studio Tour - an assistant director guides us through possibly every division of Aardman Studios in Bristol -- the rigger workshop, the model-making workshop, the place where they do the background painting, the editing room, even the canteen...

How to Build a Bunny - a model-maker demonstrates how the rabbits in the movie were made, starting from the wire armature to the shaping of the plasticine and the adding of beads for the eyes

Stage Fright - a short claymation feature

Cracking Contraptions - Wallace's inventions in action: the Snoozatron, Shopper 13, and the 525 Crackervac

There are also games and activities meant specially for kids.

One of the first gems of the cable TV age, Faerie Tale Theatre brings 26 classic tales to life. Produced over a five-year span (1982-87) for Showtime, FTT brought together creative dramatics and whimsical writing with some of the top talents of the day. Executive producer/host Shelley Duvall (who was coming off her breakout role in The Shining) shepherds this mix of theatrical simplicity and grand storytelling for these oft-told tales ("Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Hansel and Gretel," "Sleeping Beauty," and the like) for kids and their parents. Since they are not elaborately produced, FTT may be a hard sell for some smaller members of the family at first, but most should be hooked, even older kids who may pooh-pooh fairy tales. There's always a slight twist that makes these productions fresh.

The cast is amazing, especially when you think how lightly cable television was thought of in the '80s: Jeff Bridges, Bud Cort, Liza Minnelli, James Coburn, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Reeve, Klaus Kinski, Billy Crystal, Matthew Broderick, Gregory Hines, Eric Idle, Robin Williams, and Mick Jagger are some of the talented--and varied--actors appearing. Crystal's take on the smart "Little Pig" (with Jeff Goldblum as the wolf) and Williams's "Frog Prince" are two comic gems. Malcolm McDowell, right in the middle of his career high-point of playing baddies, brings flair to the Big Bad Wolf, while his then-real-life wife Mary Steenburgen beautifully counterpoints as Red Riding Hood. The casting of Vincent Price and Vanessa Redgrave in "Snow White" is inspired. Also impressive are the directors Duvall pooled: Tim Burton ("Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp"), Francis Ford Coppola ("Rip Van Winkle") Peter Medak (three episodes), Nicholas Meyer ("Pied Piper"), and Roger Vadim ("Beauty and the Beast"). You can go on for days about these wonderful tales, most totaling around the 45-minute mark, but it's better just to get the set and start wherever you'd like; you will get to the end sooner than you think. --Doug Thomas

thank you! it was for my sisters birthday and she was so surprised we watched it all day

5 out of 5 stars Great all the way.......2007-06-10

I watched these stories when they first aired on Showtime and had to have the complete set to enjoy them all over again. They have such a great cast of stars and the stories are classics. I would recommend to anyone of any age.

4 out of 5 stars Memories...sometimes better left as memories!.......2007-05-26

I purchased this set while fondly remembering scenes of these shows from my childhood. While a majority of the story lines are boring, some of the CDs are entertaining to watch as an adult. Don't get me wrong, I love the set, but just be prepared to sift through and find the episodes that you can enjoy. I do plan on having my children watch them with me when I have kids :)

4 out of 5 stars Still great after all these years!.......2007-05-17

My sister and I both grew up loving these whimsical, fun movies produced by Shelley Duvall. We would tape them on HBO and later the Disney Channel and watch them over and over. I was thrilled to find the DVD set after all these years, and I bought a copy for myself and for my sister - we have both so enjoyed the DVDs. They are pretty basic, but the quality of the films is great. Some of the special effects used in the stories are understandably outdated, but since the acting is so good, the tales are still great for your family collection. The only reason I don't give this a 5 star rating is the packaging - the films come on 6 DVDs, one of which is 2-sided, and they're all on one spindle within the box. All of the discs played well, but it would be nice if they would put out a version with a little bit better package.

I'd recommend this for any child, family or kid-at-heart adult. :)

    5 out of 5 stars absolutely fabulous.......2007-05-08

This collection of DVDs is perfect for the whole family. Speaking from experience, I enjoyed renting them from the library as a kid and still find myself enthralled with them as an 18 year old. I also know many adults who remember the show and claim to love it as well. Don't miss out on this great collection! :)
