4 out of 5 stars the good, the bad, and the weird of b-action represented.......2007-06-15

Blackbelt has the feel of another one of Don Wilson's movies from the Bloodfist series. The beginning credits list about 8 or so real life martial arts champions that are in the movie, also like the Bloodfist movies. Matthias Hues, though in an unusual role, nevertheless plays the movies big villain. The acting and rest of the charcaters are about what one would typically expect from Don Wilson. Overall, its an average film that at times feels better than the usual, and at others, not so good.

The story is somewhat original for a martial arts film, borrowing a somewhat "Bodyguard" movie plot as Jack (Don Wilson) must protect a famous singer, both from her nasty bosses and an even more nasty, and literally crazy, John Sweet (Matthias Hues) This is where the weirdness lies. When he was younger, John apparently had some sort of intimate relation with his own mother and she wanted to marry him. Thats just sick. Ok, yeah, weird. Anyway, other than that though, Matthias Hues does a good job at keeping everyone frightened in the movie. He and Wison get the final showdown - 3 minutes of a well made fight with a baaad effects ending. Oh, and as far as all those forementioned martial arts champions that star, Don Wilson makes a quick finish of nearly all of them in bar fight scenes and so on, so disspointingly, no good one on one's except the final fight.

Blackbelt is typical Don Wilson, which is actually better than many. While the movie actually has some originality, the action is actually predicatable and average. Matthias Hues is a delight, despite his strange character and Wilson delivers the rest. Good film, but not great - I give a 3-1/2 stars exactly.

5 out of 5 stars Don "The Dragon", the master of disaster........2003-06-21

I can never seem to get enough of the martial arts genre, with all it's wonderfully told stories of battles between the representatives of good and evil, who don't like to use guns, but would rather decide the victor of the battle the old fashioned way, mano-a-mano.

BLACKBELT stars kickboxing champ/martial arts legend/blackbelt hall-of-famer Don "The Dragon" Wilson as Jack Dillon, a karate instructor and former police officer hired to protect sucessful rock songstress Shanna (Deidre Imershein) from a nasty relationship with her record producers, who plan to have her killed for refusing to renew their contract. But her biggest threat comes from John Sweet (Mathias Hughes), who wants to kill Shanna. Why? Well, kinda hard to explain, but it has to do with Sweet being seduced into a sexual relationship with his mother. Since Shanna looks like Sweet's mother, who Sweet later killed for loving another man, he seeks to kill this apparent re-incarnation of his mom.

BLACKBELT can best be referred to as GAME OF DEATH meets THE BODYGUARD. It has fantastic kung fu battles, and Wilson is not hte only martial arts king here. The cast is primary component is professional martial artists, and here there is a whole slew of gangsters judo punks who team with Sweet to take Dillon down, since he defeats them all in a barroom brawl.

There are guys here that are in several of Wilson's other films, many of them from his (better known) BLOODFIST films, so he has some buddies that he has to beat up, unfortunately. But then, that's what happens in a kung fu flick, KUNG FU FIGHTING!!!!! I think that the fights are well staged and edited, very realistic.

Of course, there's the madatory final showdown with Dillon and Sweet, and it's easily the best in this flick. It was, sadly, yet another of Wilson's direct-to-video movies (Only a few of his starring flicks have seen theatrical releases), but it deserved a big screen audience as much as the next action film. I'm telling you, you have to check it out. It a fabulous action thriller that prooves what his fans alredy know, which is, Don "The Dragon" Wilson Rocks AND Rolls, baby.

3 out of 5 stars Shaolin One is "This is Kung Fu".......2005-11-04

Just to give a heads up, "Shaolin One" is actually the documentary "This is Kung Fu" with a new title. A must see for anyone who really enjoys authentic wushu and the artistry behind Chinese martial arts. The entire DVD is probably worth getting just for this film, but I can only give 3 stars as I have not seen "Brutal Boxer" (which is probably also a different movie renamed).

    2 out of 5 stars semi-false advertising.......2005-10-05

Well if you are buying this dvd to see Jackie Chan, don't. He is a side villian who has nothing to do with the plot and is barely in the movie. Typical of Groundzero and Black Belt theatre the real title of this film is probably not even "Brutal Boxer", it is rare i will give them that. The audio is especially horrible. Every time the scene changes from fight to dialogue there is a drastic volume change. Not to mention it is extremely boring and doesn't really feature any special martial art techniques. There is a reason this film is rare and that is because no one wanted you to see it!!! "Shaolin One" is the only thing that redeemed this double feature. Luckily I only paid $4 for this or I would have really felt like I got screwed over.

    2 out of 5 stars What a poor DVD.......2003-01-12

The only thing good about this DVD is the Shaolin One documentary, but that was made back in the early 90's (evident as when it said Kids from Shaolin was Jet Li's latest movie). Still, it has some great martial arts footage of masters of many styles. The movie Brutal Boxer is a real let-down. The dubbing is low volume compared to the rest of the movie and the 70's gang fight thing just doesn't interest me at all. Jackie Chan is in this film, but it's just a gang member that never gets any real camera. The film is just an excuse to have one-on-many gang fights which are so messy you can't tell who is who. And once you see the first fight the rest are the same. What a stinker! I hated it. I had to stop 1/4 way into the movie.

1 out of 5 stars well more like 1/2 a star, don't be fooled, the movie is bad.......2002-05-08

Jackie is not even in the movie!!
I sat for the whole hour and a half just waiting for him to come in and kick someone's but, but it never happens. the story is one of those late 70's gang films, with so so acting and even worse fights. horrible.

the other movie "shaolin one" is just a documentary on shaolin kung fu. I actually liked this a lot, but thinking it was gonna be an old jet film i was dissapointed.

Looks like the kung fu retailers pulled another one over our eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Very rare Jet and Jackie films.......2002-04-07

At first I thought there was a mistake on the package or the company put the wrong film for Brutal Boxer.I couldn't see Jackie Chan. Then I spotted him-as a villian! This has got to be a first!Jackie is definitely in the film, and he does fight throughout. The second feature has young Jet Li doing some incredoble martial arts.I give this package 5 stars at 2 and a half stars per film.
