John Badham's family-oriented adventure comedy, though obviously hatched in the wake of E.T. and Star Wars, manages to create its own identity through a sweet tone and an affectionate sense of fun. Military robot Number 5, a well-armed killing machine, is zapped by lightning during a test and emerges with a consciousness, curiosity, a wacky sense of humor, and a new peace-loving philosophy. Ally Sheedy (who debuted in Badham's hit WarGames) is the animal lover whose home is sanctuary for a zoo-full of strays and who adopts the adolescent robot. Steve Guttenberg is the goofy but reclusive robotics designer who goes off in search of his creation to save him from the gun-happy army. The mix of gentle slapstick and innocent romance makes for a harmless family comedy. It veers toward the terminally cute, what with 5's hyperactive antics and E.T.-ish voice, and the mangled grammar of Guttenberg's East Indian sidekick (Fisher Stevens) threatens to become offensive, but Badham's breezy direction keeps the film on track. Sheedy and Guttenberg deliver spirited and engaging performances, but most importantly the robot emerges as a real person. While the basic plot is fine and the robot is charming, the acting is weak and the addition of sexual jokes and swear words does nothing to enhance the movie. Skip this one and jump to Short Circuit 2, which is a much more entertaining movie, and the acting is better too.
Great Robot Movie All of Times.......2007-05-22
I love the movie when I watched that with closed-captioning on HBO 10+ years ago. Unfortunately, this DVD doesn't contains Closed-Captioning. I love the extra features and the quality of DVD is great! I was disappointed IMAGINE company didn't add one very important feature for Deaf - a closed captioning. Amazon did put down Closed-Captioning and I bought it, and found it doesn't contains with Closed-Captioning. Of course, I was disappointed and knowing I couldn't do much. (Short Circuit 2 has Closed-Captioning and English Subtitle with Tri-Star Columbia Company.). Hope Fox company will release this title and add this very important feature a Closed-Captioning.

I had forgotten how much "questionable" language and the one incidence
of inappropriate "finger" humor that there was.
I would not show this film to children.

Nova are a research facility that have just constructed five robots designed for war. After a lightning storm, their Number 5 leaves the group and heads into town, realizing he's alive. Is he alive? That's up to Stephanie Smith (Ally Sheedy) and Number 5's creator (Steve Gutenberg) to find out.
I found it a bit hard to sit through when I was a kid, but "Short Circuit" isn't too bad. The robot is cute and the plot is fairly engaging. Worth a look for fans of robots.

i loved this movie as a kid, and now my son loves it too. i will warn parents though, there is a traumatic scene near the end of the movie where johnny 5 gets beaten up, but he ends up getting repaired and putting the bad guys in jail, so it works out. also, there is a little bit of bad language, so if you look down on that, don't let your child watch it. other than that, it's still the great movie it was when i was a child... ;)

It would probably be much like this; two everyman protagonists, themes of loneliness and isolation and yearning, a robot who is far more humane than his human counterparts...
Unlike the first Short Circuit Movie where there wasn't much time to explore the character of Jonhhy Five, or invest the machine with character, the second film does just that and it does it very well. The viewer's suspension of disbelief is fully engaged- even as an adult I find myself lulled into feeling a deep sesne of pathos and compassion for Number Johnny Five. This is in part due to an amazing pre-CGI special effects/machine team and also due to the exceptionally unselfconscious acting of the human cast: Fisher Stevens ((the bad guye from hackers)) is truly phenomenal as Ben Jharvi, an Indian ((I think)) computer programmer who is as inept at expressing his feelings as Johnny Five is as understanding his own); Michael McKean and Cynthia Gibb are also great (McKean is perfect as a petty conman who betrays and then saves Johnny Five). The actors did an amazing job interacting with the machine and their performances add subtly dazzling layers of humor and sentiment to whta could have been a really awful movie but instead becomes a marvelous thing to watch.
OK. The script is somewhat shoddy at times and the pacing is not so well-handled. There are some dead-end scenes, but for the most part everything really hangs together well- Johnny Five stumbles through several mishaps trying to understand why humans behave as they do and why he feels what he feels. Oh, there's a chase scene set to the godawful "I need a hero," song. The kitschy 80's pop score wears a tad thin afterawhile. But then, this is a kid film at heart, and a rather unique one at that.
One scene always breaks my heart, one of my all-time favorite poignant scenes: Johnny five, after being caught by the cops, is taken and chained in the police basement- the stolen property room. He is slowly reading two books, page by page. His friends come to have him released- when allowed to leave he breaks his chains easily and sadly leaves (you see, he could have left at anytime had he wanted to; there's some Sadean undertones in how #J5 repeatedly allows himself to be demeaned and debased and almost destroyed by humans without fighting back lethally- which he easily could... a postmodern and mechanical kin to Justine, perhaps).
The books he was so slowly reading were Pinochio and Frankenstein. It always slays me, just like the Rockbiter's monologue in The Never Ending Story ("They look like big, strong hands...").
This one is so much better, in my opinion, than Spielberg's execrable A.I., if only in that Stevie over-reached himself (again) on that crite film; trying to make a 'serious' film about 'serious' issues... and then he tacked on a completely odious ending.
This film has no such pretensions- it mostly aims at fun. Because of that it achieves more than most serious cinema struggling with the same themes of technology and identity.

The Abs Diet Workout has been enjoying favorable reactions from many users, and it's easy to see why, as "host" and fitness trainer Tom Holland has designed a regimen that's brisk, efficient, thorough, and fun. Disregard the hype that calls it "a way of life" instead of simply a diet or exercise program. On the other hand, Holland's claim that The Abs Diet Workout will increase metabolism and help lose fat and build muscle is very likely true, assuming one dutifully does the exercises and follows the diet guidelines and menus as directed. The exercise portion offers a brief warmup (running in place, jumping jacks, simulated jump rope), followed by a choice of three abdominal routines; the latter vary in difficulty from beginner to advanced, but all three are designed to work the upper, lower, and oblique abs, as well as the transverse abdominis muscle and the lower back. The "circuit training" portion also has three options, each including squats, lunges, quad and hamstring stretches, pushups, and various exercises for the arms (the use of dumbbells is recommended). Add to that an extensive list of recipes for a diet plan that includes three meals and three snacks per day, and you've got pretty much everything you need for a comprehensive program designed to yield noticeable results in a matter of weeks. --Sam Graham

I can't believe I wasted my money on this workout video. It was not at all what I expected it to be. I barely got a workout. Its slow and definitely not for those who crave intense workouts. I say its a waste of money unless you enjoy easy, slow workouts that you can't benefit from. It sat on my shelves for months until I finally gave it away.
Great DVD (from a beginner perspective).......2007-04-16
First off, I am 38 at the time of this writing and have yo-yo'd off exercise routines and diets all of my life. I am a smoker (trying to quit) and so I wanted something that kept the workout at a pace that was not ridiculous, yet wasn't too boring and got my heart-rate up. My first week I did the beginner routine (warmup, abs workout, and *one* of the circuit workouts) to kind of get acclimated. I was sufficiently sore the next days that I stayed with that until I have moved to the beginner, plus 2 in a row of circuit workouts. I just finished one and I AM DEAD.
So, my point is, I don't care if this is for women or not. If it is, than call me a woman. Go ahead, I am not sensitive. ;) Anyways, this DVD is exactly what I was looking for, which means that it contains a beginning type routine that worked the various parts of my body and got my heart pumping pretty good. But most of all, I can see myself sticking with this plan and DVD for awhile, and I am looking forward to making it to the Intermediate level.
So pretty much, if you're like me and don't want to start off too intensely and want to gradually build your strength and stamina, I think this is a good workout for you. I'm not saying that it *can't* be intense, but I haven't got to the intermediate and (gasp) advanced ones yet, so I can't comment. :)

The Abs Diet Workout is fantastic. Simple, easy and effective! I enjoy doing the exercises and find it a realistic and achievable program. I am starting to feel a change in my body after only two weeks. I believe that if I continue doing these exercises I should notice an improvement to my physique. I feel like I'm doing something positive when I do the Abs exercises and therefore don't mind making the effort to perform the exercises. It's great!

I purchased this dvd because I own the 2nd one and like it so much. Boy, was I disappointed! The abs diet people must have decided to create the second dvd because this one needed a good edit. The second dvd covers basically the same exercises but with better instruction and form. Skip this one and buy the Abs Diet Workout 2!
It really works!.......2006-08-23
I'm not keen on workout tapes or DVDs but I bought this because I got a deal when I bought the book, too. But this is a great workout DVD with 3 levels, one right for everyone. It doesn't take long to work out with it and the music that accompanies the action really gets you going. I've lost 15 pounds in 6 weeks by using the Abs Diet book (it shouldn't be called a diet - more of a lifestyle change in a positive way that anyone can stick with) and the DVD.

The NASCAR world was one completely foreign to me a year ago. Then my son (who was then 5) got hooked on the racing scenes in the Cars movie, and suddenly he discovered NASCAR... and now all our Sunday afternoons are booked watching races.
I bought this DVD for my son for his birthday a couple of weeks ago. It's really interesting and well done. I watch it having already been brought up to speed on the sport; I know nearly all the drivers, their sponsors, and their car numbers. But I imagine this documentary would be nearly as fascinating to newbies, mostly because of the IMAX treatment -- cameras putting you "right there," in this case right down on the track as cars whip by.
The DVD includes a good history lesson and great explanations of how a track functions on race day. The pit crews get proper treatment, too. One criticism is that few individual races or drivers are highlighted; perhaps the filmmakers simply wanted to emphasize the "experience."
I wish I had seen this on an IMAX screen!

I bought this as a joke for my friends who have just discovered Nascar! I must admit I found it interesting. Though I am not a fan of Nascar as they are, I can see the fun and attraction but must they always go in a circle-makes my neck hurt! Bring on demolition derby-my hidden favorite! Now if IMax could film that-WOW!

You can always count on Karen Voight to give you a well-developed workout and Ultimate Step Circuit is no exception. I bought it because I was hoping that I'd get a great step workout from an instructor that brings a lot of positives to the field of video exercise. Unfortunately, there's only about 30 minutes of stepping and even when I chose the option where you do all the step segments at once, I couldn't hit my target heart rate for long enough to make it worthwhile. Likewise when I chose the combo (step segments alternating with toning) option on the DVD. But it's still a good overall workout option (vs. sitting on your couch and eating Cheetos) from one of the best instructors out there.

This workout is excellent to move, tone, sweat it all. You feel every muscle working, and Karen is very good explaining the moves.

Its was good overall workout. It was easy to follow not alot of complicated dance moves. I liked the weight segments throughout, was a nice variation. Some of the positions on the bench for stretching I didnt care for, position bothered my knee. So I did it on the floor. I enjoyed it.

Karen Voight is excellent in this DVD on multiple levels. She cues early enough, but not too early. Her techinque is impeccable - always reminding you of proper form so as to avoid injury. Her cardio is challenging, and she offers varying levels of intensity. Her weight training is awesome, and always gives a good burn. This DVD is one of my favorite b/c I always know I'm going to end up with a good workout in the end. Being an aerobics instructor myself, I would say that Karen Voight is one of my favorites. I have many of her workout DVDs. She rocks.

Challenging and Effective Workouts.......2007-02-11
I'm an intermediate/advanced exerciser, and this set of workouts from Kathy Smith is one of my favorites. As everyone always says, Kathy is a great instructor. She's upbeat and encouraging but never insincere or annoying, and her cues and explanations are helpful and to the point. I'm no expert on weight training, but from my point of view the upper and lower body workouts are incredibly thorough -- I worked muscles I'd never thought about working -- and the format (an explanation and demonstration precede each new move) makes it easier to get the correct form. The 40-minute cardio workout alternates 6 higher intensity intervals with segments of "active recovery" and lower body moves, but my heart rate stays elevated the entire time, and I finish feeling like I've had a good day's worth of exercise, especially if I use the "advanced modifiers" Kathy presents. The moves are very simple and easy to pick up, but never too boring. Overall, if you can get past the eighties fashion and production values, this is a very effective set of workouts, and a great deal.

I really enjoy this dvd I have most of Kathy Smith's excercise tapes. this one they demonstrate the proper technique on each excercise, And you can "break" up the segments too. You Don't have to do the whole dvd in one day if you don't feel like it. Each segment works different Muscle groups and she explains along the way. You can't miss with Kathys excercise videos/DVD's!
Not her best.......2006-10-04
This is not my favorite of Kathy Smith's DVDs. I do generally enjoy her workouts, but with this this DVD I don't care for the extra long introductions (which you cannot skip over), and also the fact that she does cheesy voice overs for the workouts as opposed to talking throughout the routine. Additionally, the music she chose is horrible, elevator music and not at all motivating. I've done the workouts a few times but mostly this one is sitting on the shelf.
A Great Addition to Your Rotation.......2006-09-03
Finally, "Secrets of a Great Body-Upper Body" and "Secrets of a Great Body-Lower Body" have come to DVD! It's an added bonus that "Functionally Fit- Peak Fat Burning" is thrown into the mix on this DVD, too.
If you're just starting out, this single DVD with these three workouts is really just what you need, because you can do "Upper Body" one day, "Functionally Fit" the next, and "Lower Body" the day after. Then take a rest day, and repeat the sequence. There you have a whole week of workouts that fit easily into your schedule, and you're giving your muscle groups adequate rest so that you keep seeing results.
If you've been exercising for a while, you can still benefit from this DVD. The workout really does grow with you. Just get heavier weights. I started using this workout when I was in college. I used 3, 5, and 8-pound dumbbells and really worked my muscles. Then it started feeling "easy," and besides, I'd gotten a DVD player and so my VHS workouts stayed on the shelf while I rocked out with other workout systems. It's been 4 years since I did this workout, but the minute the DVD came, I put it in and used my current weight range (8 to 15 pounds for upper body and 10 to 25 pounds for lower body) and this workout still packs a wallop. You need to shake up your routine once in a while to keep seeing results, and going back to the low-rep overload method Kathy Smith employs in "Upper Body" and "Lower Body" is a great way to do just that. Also, there are some exercises, such as Calf Raises and especially Center Trap Shrugs, that are fairly rare on exercise videos, but are so important to do, nonetheless.
This DVD is such a great value, with three great workouts for the low price. The workouts will grow with you, and for extra challenge, you could always do the seated work on a ball instead of on a chair, so you can add a little twist on the workouts yourself. It's important for beginners to pay attention to the explanations of each muscle group, so you know just what you're working and why, and more advanced exercisers could use that time to give their muscles a good stretch, get a few more reps in, or choose their weights for the next exercise. Even if you're devoted to another workout system, this is a great DVD to add to your mix to keep your muscles confused so you keep seeing results!

Great workout, you cover every area of your body with intensity. No body part is left alone. Most workouts sometimes you feel as though a body part was neglected, not this one. A great buy that converted me to the Firm Series.
One of the longest Firm workouts but one of the best .......2007-04-10
Enough people have given this video a glowing review that I probably don't need to add my voice as well ... but in case anyone needs more convincing, buy this video! I own nine Firm videos and this is probably my favorite.
Emily does a fantastic job and this is absolutely one of the hardest Firm videos -- but it's also one of the most fun. More than any other Firm video, this one leaves my muscles (especially the legs) feeling like jello by the end.
Emily keeps things moving along, which is really key, especially since the workout comes in at just over an hour long. Just when you think you can't possibly take more of a certain exercise, she moves you to a new muscle group. Her cardio and step segments are very fun and help the time go by very quickly. This is one video where I feel like it's over not too long after I've begun. The step moves do take some getting used to but I've had a harder time learning moves from other videos (such as the "box step" from Allie Delrio's Transfirmer video -- I've given up on ever getting that right and just march in place instead).
A quick word on The Firm in general: I have been doing The Firm off and on for about five years and religiously for the past four months. It is an awesome exercise program and has helped me improve my fitness enormously. It actually is fun, and it's efficient enough that you will see results quickly and thus remain motivated to continue. In the past four months I have made absolutely no dietary changes and yet I have lost almost ten pounds. I think this is especially significant because I have gained a lot of muscle, which weighs more than the fat I have lost.
If you are new to The Firm, expect to not finish a workout the first time through. Just watch the video and walk in place until you are comfortable and then pick it up again. The good news is that a) it works, b) you'll get used to it and be finishing workouts in no time (for me it was less than two weeks), and c) because it's so tough, you can continue using these workouts for months and even years without plateauing. Good luck!
Just a Beginner.......2007-02-13
I bought this and tried it out today. I have been using The Firm Fanny Lifter for only 3 weeks. I enjoy the 3-in-1 DVD that came along with it, but I needed variety. Talk about a good cardio and weightlifting workout. WOW!! I am not what people would consider overweight, by any means, but if you are looking to tone up THIS is the DVD for you.
The cueing is a little shaky at times, but overall it is excellent.

The FIRM is without a doubt the best workout series I have ever used. My best friend got me started with it and my cousin has even become an instructor at their studio in Columbia, SC!
I have owned Complete Aerobics and Weight Training for almost three years, and I continue to find it challenging. The aerobics portions are fun and invigorating, and the weight training leaves you feeling stronger.
Besides enjoying the FIRM's effective choreography, I find the cuing in this series very easy to follow. The instructors never suddenly throw something new at you. You always have plenty of time to prepare for the next move.
I'm pooped by the end of the hour, but I know I've done something great for my body.

This is an excellent workout. I love the Firm workouts. I have lost 60 pounds and counting doing Firm workouts 4-5 times a week along with eating a healthy diet. It uses light, medium, and heavy dumbbells, the fanny lifter, and the sculpting stick. Its a cardio + sculpt video. I really enjoy the step aerobics segment. Emily is a great leader. She cues well and she is energetic. This video has an extra long stretching part (i think its about 12 minutes) in the end which is very relaxing and really soothes your muscles after working them so hard in the workout. Highly recommended!

A Great Little Workout :-).......2007-06-21
So Karen is one of my favorite instructors because I love the fact that she produces efficient, graceful, and fun workouts that can be done in less than an hour. This video is just over 45 minutes, including warm-up/cool-down, and I felt that it was the perfect blend of low-impact cardio and strength.
No, this isn't the hardest workout I've ever done...but during the cardio intervals your heartrate will get in the fat-burning zone, and it will stay there if you push yourself during the strength segments. It is an easily modifiable workout, you can make it harder or easier just by changing your weights (all you need are hand weights and optional mat/stool).
It is an especially good workout (in my opinion) for people with knee or hip problems who can't take a lot of jumping around/high-impact movement. It is a great workout to use on your cross-training days if you are training for a race, or just run a lot. This is my 3rd dvd of Karen's, and I am very happy with it-I think you will be too!

At first, I didn't think the cardio portion of this dvd was that effective until I mastered the steps.. then I was able to really put forth the energy and PUSH myself, adding more flair and bounce to the movements. The moves are graceful and fun, and I love her no-nonsense instruction. This dvd really has it all... the toning is excellent, I use 8 lb weights for the upper body segments, and I can really feel the burn. I also love the lower body section, as it fires up my glutes big time (just make sure and squeeze them full force in order to get the full benefits!) This dvd has been in my rotation for awhile now, and I don't see getting tired of it, as it moves along quickly with different and interesting body movements. Give this one a try!!

Core strength is the focus of "Shape Your Abs." With four routines you can either do all the exercises in one session or focus on a classic, Pilates-based, core or dynamic routine. The menu allows you to skip over the cardio routine if you just want to focus on your abs after doing other cardio exercises or walking.
The classic routine focuses on tried-and-true exercises like sit-ups. Tracy York makes sure you are focusing all your attention on the muscles that count. Her encouraging style and a jazzy soundtrack keeps you moving through the exercises quickly.
The Pilates-based segment is another floor routine with recognizable techniques. The Hundred, Double-Leg Stretch, Crisscross and Double-Leg Lower Lift all make their appearance. The precision and control needed to complete the routine helps to flatten the midsection.
In the core segment the abs are targeted from a variety of angles and positions. It starts with a Pilates-inspired pre-roll-up combined with creative side stretches. Plank position follows with a move the feels more like running. This move tests your ab strength and takes you to your outer limits of endurance. You can feel the exercises working as you develop long lean ab muscles.
The final dynamic routine helps to train the torso to remain completely still while you move your arms and legs. You are on your back for all the exercise and yet this is the most creative segment with unique exercises to help you see results fast.

I love this DVD! I've been working out for years, so at first I thought this would be too easy. BUT if you do the exercises correctly and don't cheat, you can really feel the burn. My husband was watching me do the exercises and mentioned that it looked really easy, so I made him do them with me....not as easy as they looked!

This is a great abs video. It is a four part ( five minute per section) that includes classical abs, pilates inspired abs, core strengthen and dynamic abs. The instructor points out the correct way to do each exercise to get the best results. Before this video, I was doing crunches the wrong way. I did not know what to expect from the video, but I enjoy the workout. The video also includes a 35-minute cardio workout, which I bypass and go directly to the ab workout.
Way too easy.......2006-11-11
The video certainly has potential, however as someone that has been working out for over 10 years this tape is WAAY too easy. I barely feel a burn while doing the ab workouts, and they are entirely too short. Perhaps if they were three times as long and did all four back to back it would be a worthwhile workout. But I have much better ab tapes that kick my butt with 5 minute segment(notably The Firm abs and Tamilee Webb ab tapes). If you are an advanced exerciser I say pass on this one.

At first I hated this DVD...I tried the cardio segment and I got quite frustrated with all the moves. However, I was determined to do it all and within 3 times of popping in the DVD, i started to get all the steps. Trust me- this dvd is great if you master the cardio- you'll improve your hand/ eye coordination, lose fat, and have fun. There are 4 five minute abs toning workouts also, which really give you a variety and tone your abs. If you are looking to tone your body you are supposed to do at least 30 minutes of cardio and 5 minutes of ab workouts each day, so this DVD is perfect!

Put aside the cheesy smiling, instructions to "breathe" every few minutes, and the bad music and you have yourself an outstanding, upper-body weight routine. This workout also includes lower body squats, sit-ups and a lengthy meditation at the end. The warmup and cool down are both good; the beach background is sunny and positive. The visual cues are clear and well-timed, so you can turn down the volume and listen to your own music. The reason I rate this 5 stars is because the negative aspects are minor in my opinion, compared to the weight workout which is well-paced and thorough.
Very good circuit workout with weights........2006-01-09
This is a very good weight training circuit workout.
The exercises are done in a proper way and have a complete full body workout routine starting with a warm-up, then the exercise routine begins with weights.
Each exercise has 3 sets, the first 2 sets are the same exercise and the 3rd set is another exercise for the same muscle group making the exercise more effective and challenging.
I use this DVD 3/4 times a week as my main one to reach my goal.
I am seeing a huge difference in my stamina, strength and firmness in just a few weeks since I started this circuit weight-training workout.
I have many fitness dvds, this is by far the best that I have.

This is a great non stop workout routine with weights that workout all the muscle groups in order.
The exercises are well done, and nicely demonstrated first by Sunshine. Starting with a 4 minute warmup, then doing the upper and lower body exercises with weights, moving to the abs and finishing with a triple whammy exercise.
There is a 3 minute cool down and 5 minutes of relaxation segment with nature and self affirmations that leaves me feeling great at the end of this workout.
This is a great Dvd that I am very happy to exercise with.

This is an excellent DVD very well done with a complete workout routine for the entire body with weights.
I like it that the exercises are done non-stop 3 sets with variations for the same muscle groups.
I like the way the exercises flow non-stop, starting with a 4 minute warm up segment going into the upper body and lower body exercises with weights, Then abdominal exercises and finishing with a triplet exercise of 3 different exercises combined into one which ends the exercise portion.
Then there is a 4-minute stretching and cool down, and a special 5 minute relaxation after this intense workout that gives me a great feeling of accomplishment.
Sunshine is always positive, smiling and giving proper instructions and showing a demonstration of the exercise and then starting the exercises making it easy to follow.
I recommend this DVD to everyone that wants a good fast non-stop circuit workout routine with weights.

I got this as a gift from a friend that is a Personal Trainer, and all I have to say is one word WOW!.
Great exercises very well done. I feel very good when I finish the exercises, and especially enjoy the relaxation part after the cool down.
