On a bit of a different note.........2007-05-22
Not really going to talk about how "good or bad" these movies are (acting/scripts/etc). Personally, I like movies like "Meet John Doe".
Instead what I want to do is make a couple of comments about this package of movies that I think many of the other reviewers overlooked:
1 - The packaging of the discs - the package I got consisted of a box with 12 individual cardboard sleeves, each with a single DVD inside. Personally I like this as it seems to have kept the discs secure during shipment. I've bought other multi-disc sets and have never been that impressed with how they were shoe-horned into a single huge clam-shell case. Another thing that I like about the slim sleeves that these discs come in - it makes it really easy to drop one or two of these movies into the pocket of my laptop and/or my portable DVD player case. Also on the sleeves is a short description of each movie - in a very readable 12-pt font.
2 - The number of discs, there are twelve double-sided discs in this collection, with two movies on each side. Why do I think that is important? Mainly because I've bought other sets where a cheaper publisher crammed five movies onto each disc side so as to get 50 movies on five discs. To do that they had to greatly compress the videos which made them have a huge amount of artifacts and pixilation - making them almost unwatchable. The movies on this 12-disc set are of excellent quality, at least as good as possible considering the source material. While there appears to have been some defects in the prints used (scratches and whatnot) there doesn't seem to be any noticeable additional problems introduced from overly compressing the films to get them on the DVDs.
This is the third set of videos from Mill Creek Entertainment that I've purchased; I also bought their "Drive-In Classics" and "Cartoon Classics" collections. I must say that I've been very pleased with all three sets and look forward to buying more of their collections.
THE PRICE IS EXCELLENT, THE PRODUCT IS NOT.......2007-05-14
YES, MANY SAY THAT FOR ITS PRICE THIS PACK MAKES ANYONE MOUTH'S WATER, BUT WOULDN'T BE BETTER TO PAY A LITTLE MORE AND HAVE BETTER IMAGE, GOOD SOUND, AVOIDING CERTAIN MEDIOCRE FILMS? ANYWAY SEVERAL SURPRISES ARE THERE AND IF YOU MAY BE ANNOYED AT WHAT SAID HERE ABOVE, YOU CAN ALSO FORGET IT AND BE CONTENT WITH WHAT YOU DECIDED TO GET.

Wonderful!.......2007-05-11
I've bought 8 of the movie paks and I really enjoy them. Some are a little crappy, but most are just fine. The silents and some of the earlier movies star people that lived during the civil war. These are not HD but, they are fascinating to watch and to check out whats going on in the background. They are a bargain and just great for any old movie buff.
On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection rates : 5.7.......2007-04-12
The HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS 50 MOVIE PACK offers a wide selection at a very fair price. The several genres here span six decades of cinematic history and this diversity alone makes for an interesting box set. The extensive roster of actors in these fifty movies is also quite unique. HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS is a collection that any fan of vintage motion pictures is certain to treasure.

Films Included Have Changed.......2007-02-01
Mainly want to update Bderoes excellent list to say that my recent set seems to have had three films exchanged for others, so I assume this is now standard for the set -
Gold,
Good News, and
Lets Live a Little
HAVE BEEN REMOVED, to be replaced by -
The Road To Bali w/ Hope & Crosby,
Scarlet Street w/ Edward G Robinson, and
Pied Piper Of Hamelin (1957 TV Movie) w/ Van Johnson.
Roger Moore is still listed on the front cover, but doesn't now appear.
I have to agree with other reviews that this is a poorer set than some others in the series, with a high number of films running at least 10min too short.

Everything you need for a thrilling movie with the kids.......2007-04-04
We had a great time with the kids for a family evening. We love the movie especially "Shenanshel" the Magical Turtle. What an actor so convincing and so real the Kids love the fantasy of the entire movie and highly recommended just an evening with the family, as for the Court Turtle Shenanshel, I give the actor ten stars for the excellant portrayal of the turtle.
A Fun Charade of a Fantasy Film.......2006-03-18
I'm surprised that there are so many 5-star reviews since this movie, while charming, doesn't come anywhere near the 5-star fantasy classics I've seen in the past. A lonely widower (Beau Bridges) and his two young daughters, Miranda and Cassandra, find themselves transported on a magical voyage aboard the "Unicorn". It is during this voyage that they meet many legendary creatures, including Oberon, Titania, and Medusa. The journey proves both a harrowing adventure and enlightening experience as they find both their happiness and the memory of their loved one restored. Now that I've gotten the main plot out of the way, I'll highlight the parts of the film that succeeded and failed to impress me as a fantasy flick. The Good: 1) Beau Bridges and the two girls make a winningly charming trio. Bridges is a lovable father while Miranda is a sympatheticly shy heroine and spunky Cassandra rather reminds me of an American Hermione Granger. 2) The musical score is for the most part pretty; mystical, though decidedly modern. 3) While the special effects left much to be desired, there are a few good standouts: the unicorn, the trolls, the sea-serpent, and the little fairies. The Bad: 1) While there were some good special effects, some of the costuming was simply awful. For example, while the little fairies were gorgeous and awesome, the big ones were ridiculous. This film's version of Titania, for example, is simply the worst I've ever seen. Sure, not all fairies are supposed to be beautiful, but Titania certainly is! Instead, she looks like a human-preying water fairy, and this is certainly NOT how she's supposed to be portrayed. There was also a creature the film had the nerve to call a dryad. Um, no. If an elf and a mime had a child, this creature would be their offspring, but a dryad it is not. The two worst costumed characters were Medusa and the sphinx. I know Medusa's supposed to be beautiful, but who the heck decided to make her an overly exotic Indian goddess?? With her heavily made-up eyes and gigantic pursed lips, she irritated me so much I could hardly stand looking at her! The sphinx, for me, was the most bitter disappointment. Guess what, people? Putting a woman with springy hair and lionine eye-makeup into fuzzy pants does NOT make a sphinx! Put Medusa and the sphinx together, and you've got what looks like two very bad imitations of pop-stars; I half expected the two to break into "Survivor". I'm not sure what kind of joke the Emmy committee was playing by nominating this movie for costuming, but it wasn't a funny one. 2) The movie's tone often alternates between partly serious and totally silly, and I have a very low tolerance for excess silliness. It was this tone that often made it hard for me to take the movie seriously and grated on my nerves. I have mixed feelings about the famed scene in which Miranda dances for the sea-serpent; her dance is totally gorgeous and hypnotic, but the voice singing in the background starts warbling and I had to mute it. (Really singers, STOP doing this. It sounds pathetic, I assure you) I also found it unnecessary for the film to imply that Titania hypnoticed Miranda in order for her to dance, especially after she told her she didn't need any magical help! This scene is so beautiful; why ruin it by turning Miranda into a puppet? This took away from the scene and only made me dislike Titania more. Besides, the camera focused so long on the sight of Miranda's eyelashes fluttering on the whites of her eyes that I wanted to smack her in order to make her eyes roll back into place. (By the way, there is no mermaid in this film; only the puppet caricature of one, so don't be disappointed like I was). All in all, this is a 3-star movie. There are some bad special effects and too much silliness, but the good special effects and overall charm save it from being a bad film.
"By Believing, One Sees...".......2005-08-12
The 'Voyage of the Unicorn' is the story of the Aisling family - Professor Alan Aisling and his two daughters - the skeptical, bad-tempered Miranda and the dreamy, absent-minded Cassie. The girls weren't always like this though - they were once happy, sweet-natured girls - till their mother dies that is. Now the family live separate lives though they live in the same house - Alan who devotes his time to preaching his 'cresendo vides' (in believing one sees) philosophy at the university, which does not go down well with the Dean; Cassie who looses herself for days in her mother's portfolio and artwork, neglecting school, food and the real world in general; and Miranda, who has lost most of her faith in the human race and leds an unhappy, discontented life.
All this is about to change however, when their home is attacked one night by a violent group of trolls, who are out to stop a prophesy concerning the Aisling family from coming true. While Miranda and Mr Aisling attempt to ward them off, Cassie is whisked off by an elf - Sebastian, and a dwarf - Malachi, down to the docks where their ship, The Unicorn waits. Followed closely by Miranda and Professor Aisling, all of them are spirited away to the Landscape of the Imagination on board the magical, beautiful ship which has been specially prepared for them.
It is there that they discover their destiny from King Oberon and Queen Titania on the Isle of Faerie - it has been prophesied that 'a man of learning, and two maidens gentle of spirit' will enter the realm to free the land of the evil scourge of trolls by finding and summoning the great dragon - and at the same time freeing heroes of old.
And so they're off on their journey - with Malachi and Sebastian, who is smitten with Miranda, and on the way they have run-ins with legendary creatures such as a sea serpent, trolls, mermaids, fairies, Medusa, the Sphinx, the Minotaur, ogres, unicorns and more.
It is this voyage that the movie excells in - great costumes, set design, special effects, a beautiful soundtrack that includes the song - 'Faith precedes a Miracle', and good acting and story telling. Watch out for my favourite scenes - when Miranda subdues the sea serpent, when Cassie tames the unicorn and when Titania gives each member of the family special gifts, and special advice that only they can hear.
This is a very good movie - it's interesting, bright, colourful, well directed and acted throughout. Traditional creatures such as fairies are given a whole new look and it's a great family movie to all watch together. If you love fantasy and adventure then this movies for you.
However, one fault is that it ended rather abruptedly, and with far too many unanswered questions and loose ends. My queries include:
How did they get home? - they all just seemed to wake up the next day with no real recollections of the entire voyage!
What happened to the Sphinx? - she saves Cassie and then disappears.
Was Lily (the girls' mother) really a 'spiritual guide'? How did she know about the Unicorn and the Landscape of Imagination?
What happened to the disgraced Oberon?
Did Sebastian and Miranda really get together?
Why did Professor Aisling pick up all those rocks from the different islands? - it looked like it would be an evolving story line but nothing came of it.
Too many unanswered questions!!!
Despite this however, this is a great fantasy in a world of generic and regurgitated "Lord of the Rings" stories - this one stands on its own and is *finally* on DVD!
Wonderful fantasy.......2005-06-09
I happened to catch this movie about 3 years ago and taped it the next time it came out. I think it is a wonderful story and even though the girls' father is a main part, it shows that girls can battle off trolls and other unsavory characters. This is an excellant movie.
Finally..........2005-05-23
I am so thrilled that this movie has finally come out on DVD. It is such a nice movie. Especially for a 'made for TV movie'. Now, I haven't read the book, so I wouldn't know how close the screenplay as got, but all in all, I was pleased with the movie. I have it on VHS, but it cuts out an incredible amount. On the DVD, there is an extra 48 mins! The quality should be better as well.
The effects aren't the greatest and neither are some of the sets (as well as some other things) but you have to keep in mind that this is a made for TV movie, with a low budget. But the story is extrodinary, and I believe that it's a wonderful family movie that all who love fantasy can enjoy.
(If you want to know more about the movie, you should try looking at some of the reviews on the VHS copy)

John Phillip Law stars as the legendary sailor this time around as he finds a talisman and sets sail with his crew for an uncharted island. With a beautiful slave girl (Caroline Munro) in tow, Sinbad takes on the evil sorcerer Koura (Tom Baker), who wants Sinbad's golden talisman to complete a spell. En route to the island, Koura brings the ship's figurehead to life to wreak havoc on the ship and crew. Once there, Sinbad and crew must do battle with a six-armed figure of Kali brandishing a sword in each hand, as well as an enraged Cyclops centaur and a winged griffin, and also deal with the treacherous Koura.
This 1974 entry in the Sinbad franchise is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the film's production values are quite good, and of course the Ray Harryhausen effects are as beautiful as ever. The set design (especially for the scenes inside the cavern) is striking and inventive, and there's Miklós Rózsa's score gracing the soundtrack. On the other hand, the story definitely tends to drag a bit, and Law's indeterminate accent often wavers toward a weird Slavic inflection. Pointing to the film's age, Law and company often tend to look like poncey rock stars with their long hair, beards, and harem pants. That's all nitpicking, though; the action segments, though they're fewer and farther between than in other Sinbad films, redeem the movie with Harryhausen's incredible artistry. It's worth owning just to see the fluid, complex movements of the animated Kali flailing away at six men with her swords. And of course, scream queen Caroline Munro never looked better as the slave girl Margiana. This is rich, well-crafted fantasy fare that the entire family can enjoy. --Jerry Renshaw

Great adventure...cool movie.........2007-04-30
Parents,if you can't find anything for you and the kids to watch because of either being too violent or bad language, then why not this movie and the others that Ray Harryhausen did?? It has cool looking creatures and lots of action. It doesn't always have to be the newest releases, does it?? Show them movies you grew up on or your parents grew up on,so what are you waiting for??
GREAT HARRYHAUSEN MASTERPIECE!.......2007-03-25
This was the first Harryhausen movie that I saw first run at the movies! I was very familiar with RH's older film work shown on TV in the early 60's and was lucky enough to see the 7th Voyage of Sinbad at the movies in a re-release in the late 60's. When the Golden Voyage theatrical trailer played on TV I knew I would be there! This is one of his best films with some awesome creatures! Kali and the Centaur's fight with the Griffin are stand outs, but they are all super cool! A classic fantasy adventure that should be introduced to younger kids who missed out when Ray was King.
A great movie for the entire family!.......2007-01-05
I was pleasantly surprised that this is a great family movie! The acting is above average, especially John Phillip Law's performance. He is outstanding as the humble hero. Just remember the special effects are not George Lucas quality, but for the era in which this film was made, they are very good. Don't miss this charming movie!!
My Favorite of The SInbad films.......2006-12-02
This film was perhaps my favorite Sinbad film and favorite stop animation film. Its fun, I liked JOhn Phillip Law as SInbad. ANd the creatures where my favorite. A great film, with great adventure and impressive effects.
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.......2006-11-10
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad is a great adventure movie for the whole family. The special effects by Ray Harrhousen are terrffic! Tom Baker (Doctor Who) is great as the evil magician.

This three-hour made-for-television epic based on the classic Chinese story Journey to the West is an engaging mix of fantasy and martial-arts adventure, and it features a veritable tsunami of special effects. The plot involves an American China scholar (played by Thomas Gibson) whose knowledge of Asian mythology becomes astoundingly useful when he is magically transported into other dimensions by terra cotta warriors who come to life. The American scholar soon finds himself face to face with a wisecracking Monkey King (Russell Wong), a mystical warrior whose martial-arts skills are matched only by his sarcastic one-liners. The mismatched heroes have only three days to find an ancient manuscript and thereby save the world from destruction, and they're assisted by the timely interventions of the Goddess of Mercy (played by Bai Ling). The rambling plot puts the characters into confrontations with tigers, dragons, and evil giants, and at times they're joined by such unorthodox allies as a human with the head of a pig. As his quest progresses, the scholar has to learn to think like a warrior, and there are innumerable obstacles put in his path. Even if the plot doesn't always seem terribly coherent, the computer-generated special effects are entertaining, and the film has no shortage of bizarre villains, flashy martial-arts scenes, and sardonic quips from the Monkey King. --Robert J. McNamara

DO NOT waste your time..........2007-06-25
This movie was so bad and yet I watched it all just to see if possibly it would get better. It didn't. The only one that can act is the damn monkey and even then the character development is slim. I always buy Halmark movies, they've been great (10th Kingdom etc) but this one is the worst movie they've ever endorsed. I read all the reviews and decided to give it a chance-save yourself the dissapointment. The movie could have been so good. The plot is quite good but the screenplay, acting, effects, are not. A goddess having a drink at the bar...come on, even I won't watch something that lame. Mythology is something I love but the way these people portray it becomes laughable, and disrespects the story it's trying to tell. Most of all you can't even like the hero because he is so annoying! Buy the Snow Queen, Jack and the Beanstalk, DEFINETLY 10th Kingdom, but don't buy this movie!
(no, don't even think about giving it a chance because it has a cool cover)

i liked this movie so much i don't know what to say about it other than it's friggin awsome!!!!! it has a great story line, i liked it so much i bought it. i originally saw it on the scifi channel but didn't get to see the whole thing. if you want something to make you laugh then you ought to get this movie.
The Lost Kingdom.......2007-05-27
Well done modern telling of a classic Chinese tale. Some special effects were not up to todays standards but that did not get in the way of a well done story.
Entertainment vs Accuracy.......2006-12-06
I picked 3 stars as a medium for this movie.
For those of you who enjoy mythical worlds for entertainment purposes, then you might rank this as high as 4 stars. Though the acting by Thomas Gibson (playing journalist Nick Orton, the Scholar) falls a bit flat, Russell Wong makes for an enthusiastic and entertaining Monkey King. The costumes are nicely done, particularly that of Pigsy, and the martial arts scenes are well choregraphed though a little cheesy sometimes. The special effects, while not perfect quality, give the movie character and a touch of humor.
For those of you who favor accuracy, this probably falls as low as two stars. (1 if you are an extremist, but then why did you even bother watching this?) The movie was created with little regard of the historical/modern origins of Buddhist religion. Issues of particular note are:
1. the Goddess Kwan Ying's deception/drunkenness at the begining of the movie and the romantic feelings throughout the film conflicting with the modern view of the holy figure Guan Yin (whom Kwan Ying is based on)**
2. the portrayal of Confucious as greedy and selfish instead of wise
3. (though not a religious issue) there seems to be a little bit of a dig at Chinese communism in the movie's second half which may be too much for the politically sensitive. There is some obvious emphasis on Western values such as individualism vs the collectivism of the Chinese.
** For those of you crying bloody murder over the portrayal of Guan Yin and looking for a warped version of a Christian holy figure, see the movie series 'Prophecy' by Gregory Widen. (Interestingly, Russell Wong is also a lead in Prophecy II as Danyael.) The archangel Gabriel has turned against the Christian God and the humans of God's creation. The warping of holy figures doesn't just happen to those of Chinese origin - it happens everywhere.
Note: THIS IS ***NOT*** A RECREATION OF 'JOURNEY TO THE WEST'!!!
Too many people seem to be expecting this. If you are looking for a retelling of 'Journey to the West', keep going as this is not for you. This is a Westernized story that pulls elements from the story "Journey to the West". You will not find a cast of all Asian characters. You will not find Buddhism or Confucionism presented here accurately. This is an entertainment piece and not a historical one. This was made for a the general American (and European?) audience and not an Asian one.
chill ppl, the movie is interesting. why can't you just enjoy it dhuh?? .......2006-08-16
it's funny reading some of you ppl ...
making such a big deal over religion, confucius, kuan yin, and all that.
you're so self-righteous that you missed the point of this movie.
kuan yin falls in love with the teacher. she knew she was risking the loss of her godliness ... but being the goddess of mercy,
she was willing to do what she needed to do ...
in order to save the world.
that is what compassion is all about.
confucians being insulted that their master is portray as a snivelling self-centred so and so?
well, maybe he was as self-righteous as those who put down this movie.
step back and stop looking at it from the perspective of the true message; not from what the pig, monkey, kuan yin, white man, yellow man, whatever.
the story and message is good over evil.
and that even gods can fall in love.
some , like monkey , finds love as rather unnecessary.
but, is it not due to their own self-centeredness?
like monkey, who is portrayed as rather arrogant and too concerned with himself. is it no surprise that he finds loving another person unnecessary? he's too much engrossed in himself.
i don't think it was the intention to insult anybody's beliefs or what not. what's the point?
the story is interesting, and the fights are kept to a minimum...
not like the jackie chan and jet li, or kill bill
overkill.
it's meant to send a message , as kuan yin tells the scholar:
you cannot do wrong if you listen to your heart.
remember your past, you were hurt by love,
but you can do great things if you only continue to listen to your heart.
that's all there is ...
no great insults, no subversive insinuations,
... just a simple message.
why make mountains out of molehills???
in closing,
every one has their own perspective of what is and what is not.
we're all unique, and sometimes we need to see it from the other person point of view.
you are not wrong, neither am i. we're just different...
and why don't you just enjoy the movie, huh?
it's an enjoyable movie.
at the end, with monkey , pig and the other walking away...
it reminds me of tin man, lion,...
of wizard of oz.
that was a fun movie, and an unforgettable one,
and so is this one.

What a rediculous pile of poo........2006-06-02
You're kidding, right? The only good film in the trilogy is the origonal. How dare you try to continue the story of something that cannot be continued. The orgional was good enough. Leave it there. Just because you want money, don't ruin such wonderfull entertainment.
I didn't even stay awake through all of the movie, it was so bad! I'd rather watch Barney with my 2-year-old!
Further Explored.......2006-02-03
This third sequel in the terrifyng Candyam series is a further decline, as you can feel more sympathy for the character as it does explain all along- a mob lynched and hazed him, pasting honey on his body and bringing a swarm of bees to eat him alive. It was about inter racial marriage, which again was almost unbearable to watch, and what was even more scary was that this happens in real life. A true old fashioned ghetto which again is the closest thing to a hell on earth.
Candyman 3: The Day of the Dead (1999).......2005-12-31
Director: Turi Meyer
Cast: Tony Todd, Donna D'Errico, Alexia Robinson, Jsu Garcia, Mark Adair-Rios, Lupe Ontiveros, Elizabeth Guber, Rena Riffel, Ernie Hudson Jr.
Running Time: 93 minutes
Rated R for bloody violence and gore, sexuality and language.
The third in the series derived from a concept by Clive Barker, "Day of the Dead" (they can't even come up with their own subtitle) staggers down the well-trodden path already navigated by the "Halloween" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies: that is, taking a decent concept and flushing it down the toilet. The original movie was a near horror masterpiece and relied on atmosphere rather than gore, while the first sequel was bearable if completely routine. This one is just a load of rubbish. Donna D'Errico, from Baywatch (what a spectacle of credibility), stars as Caroline McKeever, the great great granddaughter of the feared Candyman (Tony Todd once again), once a normal man but now an apparition who appears to slaughter everyone around you if you dare to say his name five times in front of a mirror. Caroline says his name five times in front of a mirror and up he pops to murder her nearest and dearest. As the Candyman hacks his way through various bad actors, Caroline teams up with new pal David (Nick Corri) to find a collection of paintings knocked up by the Candyman while he was still alive, which may hold the key to stopping him.
There's not a single thing here that isn't scavenged from the first "Candyman" film and every other ropy horror movie produced since caveman days. The screenplay is so lazy it can't even be bothered to connect half the characters to the plot, the photography is bright and glossy, which is at odds with what's supposed to be a dark story, while nothing in the direction adds any atmosphere at all. Anyone could have directed this movie, so little effort has been put in to make it scary, while the ending is an outrageous cop out. No thought has gone in to developing themes or structuring the plot because no one here is talented enough to give this movie any depth beyond having D'Errico running around in a variety of tight vests. The rest of the performances are poor too, although none are quite as bad as D'Errico's pathetic attempts at screaming and breathing erratically. Surely more can be done with characters like the Candyman than the constant repetition of scenes where he appears to stick his hook through someone's stomach. The fact that the makers of this movie think Candyman is so terrifying that the very sight of him just standing there will strike fear into our hearts is a sign that they just can't be bothered even to try something a bit different. Clive Barker may not be the master of horror as every at first claimed him to be, but he's right about one thing: the sequels to his movies are garbage.
Horrendous.......2005-09-26
Clive Barker did a good job on the original Candyman. It was truly a cut above most horror movies. The second movie was medicore at best in my opinion but this one was just horrendous. There is no suspense at all in this movie and the acting is deplorable. Donna D'Errico is soft on the eyes but too bad she talks. Lets hope this is the last sequel.
0 STARS: THAT WAS SO LAME! LMFAO THAT WAS SO LAME!!.......2005-08-21
I will not give "Candyman 3: Day of the Dead" a serious analysis because it is so stupid and to be frank, is not even worthy of a review other than to say that this TRASH sucks just like the rest of the series, but also, this movie goes above beyond being horrible and is the epitome of the word "lame". THIS MOVIE "F"ing SUCKS!!! Please pardon me for my language, but after watching this movie, I am sure you can understand my distress after wasting my time on this complete and utter rubbish.

after finding "stories of the century" on a 2 disc set i found this 4 disc set in bargin ben.......2006-04-30
well i found all?(i guess this is all) of the shows for this little heard of western show from the 50's!! the plot has 2 agents of the railroad go after a real outlaw of the west. the show is very well written and acted and worth a look if you love westerns like me!
Legends of the Old West.......2005-07-11
Bought this four-disk set off the shelf of a national retailer at a deep, deep discount without having a clue what it contained. I discovered that they contained 40-some episodes of a mid-1950s television series named `Stories of the Century,' as well as three bonus episodes of another series I'll get to in a minute. Anyway, at a dime an episode I was pleased with this set.
`Stories of the Century' was a syndicated western that was filmed in 1954 and lasted, as far as I can tell, for about two seasons. It starred Jim Davis - later Jock Ewing of `Dallas' fame - as railroad detective Matt Clark. Mary Castle, a Rita Hayworth look-alike stars in a majority of the episodes as fellow detective Frankie Adams, Kristine Miller in some as Margaret `Jonesie" Jones. Each episode had the railroad detectives tracking down one of the many true-life bad guys of the wild west. Frank and Jesse James, Belle Starr, the Dalton Gang... you name `em, this series chased `em. And caught `em. (That the story featured criminals who were active from about 1865 to about 1905 begs the question of how Clark and Frankie and Jonesie managed to stay so young for so long. My guess is that it was all that clean living. Matt and Frankie and Jonesie don't seem to have an existence beyond their job, and hanky-panky of any sort isn't even hinted at.)
Their value as present day entertainment is going to depend a lot on what you're looking for. Each episode opens with a flat, Joe Friday-like voice over introduction by Davis announcing this week's criminal and their claim to infamy. After a short scene of the criminal(s) criming we learn why Matt and Frankie or Jonesie are chasing them. If they're like Belle Starr (Marie Windsor) and they rustle cattle rather than rob trains, they rustle cattle being transported by the railroad. Matt and Frankie or Jonesie investigate, get the goods on the bad guys, chase them, have a shoot-out, and, usually, leave the bad guy as a lifeless husk.
Although the series is sprinkled with interesting characters actors - Windsor (Belle Starr), Richard Jaeckel (Billy the Kid), Slim Pickens (The Smiling (later Sundance) Kid), Jack Elam (Black Jack Ketchum) - there's a dulling sameness about things. Billy the Kid comes off pretty much the same as Frank and Jesse James, the Younger Brothers, and all the rest of them. It's diversionary entertainment at best, especially intended for the undemanding.
Surprisingly - to me, at least - `Stories of the Century' won the Emmy in 1955 for Best Western or Adventure Series, beating out the `Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok' (Guy Madison & Andy Devine), `Annie Oakley' (Gail Davis), `Death Valley Days' (then hosted by Stanley Andrews), and `The Roy Rogers Show.'
Also included are three episodes of `Judge Roy Bean,' from 1956 and starring Edgar Buchanan in the title role. The `Judge Roy Bean' episodes are in color - `Stories of the Century' is in black and white - but the color is severely faded. Buchanan as always is interesting but the three stories were clearly directed at a young and easily satisfied audience.
LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST is recommended with a lot of caveats for the emptor. Either way, if you can grab them out of the bargain bin you might be pleasantly surprised.
Best "Stories of the Century" Collection.......2005-01-28
This 4-disc set is a really good deal for fans of old TV westerns. In this set are practically all of the installments of "Stories of the Century", a western that ran from 1954-55, along with a handful of the early color series "Judge Roy Bean".
"Stories of the Century" starred Jim Davis (who we all know and love as Jock Ewing from the "Dallas" TV series). Davis plays Matt Clark, Railroad Detective, who along with his female partner Frankie (Mary Castle, season 1), or Jonsey (Kristine Miller, season 2), somehow manage to involve themselves in just about every effort to capture all of the famous outlaws the Old West produced. Strangely enough, they never seem to age despite covering cases that range from 1850-1910.
The idea of the main character being a railroad investigator is pretty clever, as it makes sense for a railroad "cinder sleuth" to have a hand in stopping or investigating many of the outlaws' raids.
All of the bad guys are famous western outlaws (like Quantrell's Raiders, or Jesse James), and this lends an air of authenticity to the show. Most of the stories are fairly accurate as to the overall events surrounding the outlaws' criminal activities and eventual punishments. However, at times the presence of Clark and his partner seems just a tad bit contrived.
In any case, Davis owns the series. While his female partners can seem a bit overly-helpless at times, Davis' Clark character is both brains and brawn enough to tangle with any threat that comes along. With such a commanding presence, it really makes you wonder why Davis never became a major TV or movie star, and why he had to wait until the late '70s to find fame again on "Dallas" (even then, Davis was more or less a supporting player).
Famous character actors pop up throughout the series, such as Denver Pyle, Slim Pickens, James Best, Lee Van Cleef, Fess Parker, Glenn Strange, James Craven, Sheb Wooley, John Dehner, Jack Elam, and others, who will all be familiar to western fans.
The show was produced by Republic Pictures' television division. Bolstered by Republic's huge library of stock footage from the many westerns they made, there are plenty of stunts and chases seamlessly worked in around the new footage of Clark and his investigations.
