1 out of 5 stars wonderfully awful.......2007-06-14

Hunk of bygone years meets camp diva of future years; a strange parallel for a gay fan, or rationalization for buying this tanker?

Kim is young and cute, and Clint is older but still sexy. The plot (see expansive review above, which far outweighs the worth of the film) is thin.

2 out of 5 stars "...and under no circumstances do we tell the people the truth.".......2005-08-09

The first sentence for the description on the back of the DVD case for the film Deadly Harvest (1977) states the following `Cinematic changes have lead to a hungry planet.' Cinematic changes? I saw the film last night, and I'm betting they probably meant `climatic changes'...not a good sign... written by Martin Lager (The Starlost: The Beginning) and directed by Timothy Bond ("Star Trek: The Next Generation"), the film stars the immense Clint Walker (6' 6") who played the lead in the mid 50s television series "Cheyenne", along with appearing in a number of films including The Night of the Grizzly (1966), The Dirty Dozen (1967), and Pancho Villa (1972). Also appearing in this Canadian production is a young Kim Cattrall (Porky's, Police Academy), Nehemiah Persoff (Fate Is the Hunter), Geraint Wyn Davies ("Forever Knight"), Dawn Greenhalgh (The Virgin Suicides), David Brown (Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault), and Jim Henshaw, who would later find his true calling writing episodes on such television series as "Friday the 13th", "War of the Worlds", and "La Femme Nikita", but will always be know to me as the voice of Bright Heart Raccoon from The Care Bears Movie (1985).

The film begins with an aerial shot of some snowy farmlands and ominous voiceover relating the precarious predicament man has gotten himself into by the end of the 70s (and I ain't talking about disco). Apparently industrial pollution, urban sprawl, unchecked population growth, and just poor planning in general have caused changes in the climate such that its snowing in the middle of summer, and the years harvest has gone the way of last years harvest...that's to say both are a wash...oh yeah, the gooberment has also squandered away the grain reserves (they sold them to a famine stricken Asia for a tidy profit), so food stuffs are becoming increasingly difficult to come by, causing said gooberment buffoons to not only cut the present rationing of food, but impose martial law along with a curfew, close all borders, and stop all public long distance communications. Things are tough all over as people from the city begin raiding the outlying farms in hopes of stealing some food, but farmer Grant Franklin (Walker) and his family seem to getting by okay (despite the fact that some city goons stole their prize cow), and even have something to look forward to with the impending marriage of Grant's daughter Susan (Cattrall)...but, as most of us know, things will get worse before they get better...on the day of the wedding, circumstances have led to a group of armed city men to crash the party (the wedding guest have brought food as gifts for the young couple), violence erupts, and people get killed, driving the normally (and annoyingly) pacifistic Grant into action (finally)...the frozen ground may not yield any crops, but a deadly harvest is on the way as Grant seeks retribution from those who done him and his kin wrong...

I was a bit hesitant to buy this DVD specifically because of the cheap and funky Adobe Photoshop DVD case artwork, featuring an obviously recent headshot of Ms. Cattrall, looking nothing like she did back in 1977, but, I have to say, the movie turned out better than I expected (my expectations were extremely low). I'm not saying this is a great film, but in terms of unintentional humor, it's worth a look. I thought the movie was meant to take place in the United States, but they only ever stated `North America' in the film, and with the abundance of Canadian accents (eh?) and snow, Canada wouldn't be an illogical setting. One of the best parts come at the beginning when we see a small group of dubious gooberment officials meeting in a crummy office, trying to sort out the impending famine that will surely result due to their actions (or inactions). One recommends euthanasia, the killing off of the old and the sick (one step away from Soylent Green), but all eventually agree that telling the public the truth would be a bad thing...the truth being how badly the officials screwed everyone over...in my synopsis I made the movie sound like an action type vehicle, but that's not really accurate. There is some action, but the overall intent of the film seemed to be showing how individuals would act (and react) during a crisis situation, some choosing to maintain a hopeful, optimistic view (Grant was looking into hydroponics as a possible, viable alternative), while others choose to exploit (or harm) their fellow human beings, thinking of nothing but themselves as desperation and despair settled in...the main focus is on the Franklin family, but we also get to see another family, one that lives in the city, and how the father eventually finds a way to cope with the situation (in another classic scene worth the price of admission alone). As I said this really isn't an action movie, but there is a satisfying sequence at the end, as the farmers go to war with the invading raiders from the city. The acting is pretty rotten as the story is saturated with sappy melodramatics and exaggerated histrionics. The production values are fairly low, but perhaps that was because so much was spent on the helicopter aerial shots that permeate the movie...the worst aspect about this film, the one that stands out above the others, is the hideous musical scoring...it this really schlocky, inappropriate, psuedo sci-fi electronic crapola, much like that'd you hear on an episode of the late 70s futuristic television show "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century", starring Gil Gerard. I appreciate a good musical score, especially one that blends in smoothly with the story, not necessarily drawing too much attention to itself, while the great musical scores do draw attention to themselves, but more so in a manner of complimenting the visuals, adding a vibrancy and sense of life...here it pulsates like that of an ingrown toenail cutting into the soft, pink flesh, the resultant infection releasing a steady stream of virulent pus.

The fullscreen picture on this Westlake Entertainment Group release is mediocre, making me think the source material was probably a slightly worn videotape. It's watchable, but the colors are flat and there's a consistent fuzz throughout. The audio comes through well enough, about equal to the picture quality. There is a menu and chapter stops, and even a special feature in the way of a glowing biography of Clint Walker and his career. Overall I'd give this 2 ½ stars, as it made me laugh...I would have been willing to go to three had there been some nekkidness...

1 out of 5 stars "Fukkatsu no hi" it ain't so kiss your $$$ goodbye!.......2006-04-30

I was buying something on Amazon and I was informed that for an additional $5.01 purchase I would get the free super saver shipping so I browsed the cheapie DVDs looking for something palatable and I found this DVD compilation and bought it. because of Virus or "Fukkatsu no hi" as the 3 hour Japanese version was called.
Originally I saw Virus on Showtime in the 80's it ran 2 hours 10 minutes and wasn't bad even though as I understand it an hour of Japanese scenes and dialog had been removed.. The special effects were TV quality but the storyline was good. I have been telling friends about it for years and they wanted to see it. I've searched for the original version but I only found it on Japanese websites at a cost of over $60 US. (At that exchange rate no wonder the Japanese take month long golfing vacations in Hawaii).
When the order arrived after 3 weeks and not the 10 days advertised by Amazon, my wife and I planned on watching Virus that night. What a disappointment. The picture was so dark that we had to crank up the brightness and picture quality on our 32 inch JVC to the maximum setting. I knew that there would be a major reduction in quality when compressing 6 hours onto a 4.7 GB DVD but it was degraded further because The transfer was done from a well worn print or overplayed tape.
To our further disappointment many of the more poignant scenes had been deleted. Gone were the Tokyo hospital scenes where only four nurses were left to care for the thousands of dead or dying. Gone was the scene where the Japanese Antarctic station made radio contact with a young American boy who was the only survivor in his town. All gone because the film had been cut to 107 minutes!.
We haven't watched the other two "classics" as yet. Maybe we haven't been bored sufficiently with our 500 Dishnetwork channels or maybe its because we are avoiding the inevitable. Whichever it is after we finally watch the last movies we'll use the disk as a coaster or toss it in the local Salvation Army donation bin. Either way my money is gone and when I place my next order with Amazon I'll skip the Super Saver shipping thank you very much..

3 out of 5 stars i knew going in that this would be a cheese fest,so i found that i liked it somewhat.......2006-04-27

ok sure the transfers aren't very good, the movies aren't very good, and wellat least the price is right. i knew that this disc(yep, all three movies on one,one sided disc) wouldn't be very good, and the fact that i had only heard of one of the movies clued me in to the fact that i had grade a cheese in my hand. the point i guess is that i expected very little and so was happy with what i got. if you are looking for grade a movies and transfers quit buying these cheap sets, you know that they aren't going to be that great and to expect it to be great is really not very smart on your part. relax, unwind, and just sit back and watch,if you drop all the beefs about them you might enjoy these movies because some are so bad as to be funny.

2 out of 5 stars Squeeze too much stuff on a DVD and the picture degrades.......2005-09-06

This DVD taught me that if you squeeze too much stuff on a dvd, the picture degrades. All three of the movies on this DVD have terrible resolution, which diminishes any opportunity for enjoyment. The resolution competes with the silly plots and terrible acting so I don't know what's worse.

1 out of 5 stars Disasters, all right! Disasters of the cinema arts!.......2005-04-23

These, folks, are cheesy shows. You watch the first (Virus) and wonder how a film could be worse. But you watch the second (Hurricane) and realize that yes, it is possible to make an even worse movie than Virus. But boy oh boy, when you get to number 3 (Deadly Harvest) you realize that the impossible has been made manifest! It is also stunningly awful!

In short (the films aren't worth more than that), the productions are cheap and sleazy, the actors are off their feed (if indeed, they'd eaten from the apple of talent at all), the settings are lousy, most of the footage is stock footage, and some shots are even repeated. The scores match all of this in quality. But the DVD presentation equals the worst I have seen on the medium (a cheapo early DVD of Metropolus, where all the subtitles were trimmed off left and right). The film is grainy, they are too dark, etc. etc. etc.

The reason to own these epics? If you are an exhaustive collector of the

3 out of 5 stars 3 hardly known TV quality disaster films.......2004-12-13

This DVD set is definatly not the best in the world. It features three minescule entries into the disaster film genre of the 1970's. All three films are television quality, both in script and in picture. The best of these three by far is "Virus" (1980 starring Chuck Connors and George Kennedy) AKA "Day of Ressurrection" or "Fukkatsu No Hi" in Japan. The other two films are "Deadly Harvest" about a world food shortage due to the disintegration of the ozone layer or something, anyway it's really quite a bore. The film is set in the late '70's on a farm where a family has to protect their food from "city folk" who keep trying to steal it. Then there's "Hurricane" of 1974 starring Larry Hagman. This film was okay, the quality is pretty bad and the story and acting is VERY campy. There is a lot of hurricane stock footage from the 1960's-70's in it as well. "Virus" is also presented pretty poorly and this edition features the American TV version of the film that is short nearly an hour of footage, but it's still a pretty interesting film without it.

There are also some pointless special features like a Trivia section that really doesn't have a whole lot to do with the actual films shown as it does with the pretty famous actors that are for some reason in the films. And that is really all there is to say about this very unimportant set of films.

          1 out of 5 stars A REALLY "CORNY" MOVIE.......2005-03-22

They say that this sequel surpassed it's original. From watching this movie that aint achieving much! All the kids talk about is the "corn". They only good things about the movie are Lacy and Angela. they are damn HOT! One of them even has a sex scene.

          5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2004-09-21

God, I love this kind of stuff. Basically, Children of the Corn II is cheap, gory, and loads of fun. It's also well-made, too... the effects are pretty good (not anything amazing but they more then get the job done). This film contains buckets of blood, gotta love that nose-bleed scene! 'Final Sacrifice' also contains a great score by Daniel Licht and has a fairly morbid sense of humor (What a World!). Overall, the complete package for a great time at the movies... dripped in blood, of course.

5 out of 5 stars Not one of the best horror films, but it still needs praise!.......2004-03-17

Who can ever forget the gloomy classic "Children of the corn" with its dark, beautiful, and gloomy melody and of course...it WILL make you laugh...because it promises more guffaws then terror. Micah, the new leader which is a shame for the Isaac fans, is showing his world from his eyes...but with a demonic demon possessing him and trying to regain followers which loses the almost flawless purpose of the film. It takes a turn here, as all Stephen King films usualy do and it is actually a "Disease" that Micah and the children are being possessed by, and He who Walks Behind The Rows does play a small role...note, small role. Same point to the original as the novel where Stephen King gave out his rough draft to the masses. A few reviewers here say-well a few who watched it and me-that COTC 2 was one of the few films in the history of COTC lore that was intelligent(ish), innovative, dark, and moody, with addictive dialogue, dark melodies, and so-so screenwriting, and from us, got the commercial success that it got. I consider this COTC classic as the best example of brilliant and Macabre movie getting the justice and recognition that it somehow deserves! I give it a two big thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Good Corny Fun.......2004-03-03

Whether or not you will like this movie is depending. I, personally, love cheesy special effect and just decent enough to not make your brain expload on contact acting. I love cheesy horror movies. If you are not a fan of corny movies, you probably wont like it... but, as far as the movie ITSELF goes...

Final Sacrifice is the sequel to the original 1984 Children of the Corn movie (which is based on a short story by Stephan King in the book Night Shift). It begins some time after the events of CotC 1 (though you don't have to watch the first movie to understand the second); police men came into Gatlin and found all the bodies of the dead parents, now they are taking the children to Hemingford, a town 19 miles away. The film centers around a disfuntional father and son pair. John, the father, is a reporter who brough Danny, the son, with him to get the story of the corn children to save his failing career. Once in Hemmingford; they meet Micah (note for the girls: he's a serious hotty), the new (possessed) leader of the children, do their little investigation thang, find love, almost get killed, and save the day as they ALWAYS do in CotC films. This movie has gorey and VERY original death scenes, including my favorite ever where one person has a nosebleed to death (~.^) and many others that may make you giggle, if you're not over sensative about that kind of stuff.

So, I would recommend this movie to any fan of CotC or corny horror flicks. I would not recommend this movie to anyone in the academy. Let's leave it at that, a'ight?

5 out of 5 stars good as the 1st.......2003-12-21

This was an excellent sequeal to the 1st. It picks up right where the 1st one left off. It starts out in Gatlin where some police guys have found a cellar full of dead bodies from "COTC 1" and they ask the kids that are left in that town what happened and they all say "I saw the corn" and they load all the kids up and move them to next town where the ppl there take them in. Well, they all go and meet in the cornfields and pick up with Issac's preaching stuff by thier new leader Micha. Soon, the kids make thier attack on the town to sacrafice the adults for "He Who Walks Behind The Rows". They crush an old lady by trapping her under her house and making it fall on her, put the old womans; sister out in the middle of the road in her wheel chair where a big truck hits her and slams her into the Bingo building, stab the town doctor with hypedermick needles and stab him in the back with a knife, use a voo-doo doll on this guy at church and make him bleed to death, and then everyone thats left except 2 adults get locked in the church and the kids burn it down. Then thier leader gets chopped in half at the end and then it goes off.
