"Remember, remember the fifth of November," for on this day, in 2020, the minds of the masses shall be set free. So says code-name V (Hugo Weaving), a man on a mission to shake society out of its blank complacent stares in the film V for Vendetta. His tactics, however, are a bit revolutionary, to say the least. The world in which V lives is very similar to Orwell's totalitarian dystopia in 1984: after years of various wars, England is now under "big brother" Chancellor Adam Sutler (played by John Hurt, who played Winston Smith in the movie 1984), whose party uses force and fear to run the nation. After they gained power, minorities and political dissenters were rounded up and removed; artistic and unacceptable religious works were confiscated. Cameras and microphones are littered throughout the land, and the people are perpetually sedated through the governmentally controlled media. Taking inspiration from Guy Fawkes, the 17th century co-conspirator of a failed attempt to blow up Parliament on November 5, 1605, V dons a Fawkes mask and costume and sets off to wake the masses by destroying the symbols of their oppressors, literally and figuratively. At the beginning of his vendetta, V rescues Evey (Natalie Portman) from a group of police officers and has her live with him in his underworld lair. It is through their relationship where we learn how V became V, the extremities of the party's corruption, the problems of an oppressive government, V's revenge plot, and his philosophy on how to induce change.
Based on the popular graphic novel by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta's screenplay was written by the Wachowski Brothers (of The Matrix fame) and directed by their protégé, James McTeigue. Controversy and criticism followed the film since its inception, from the hyper-stylized use of anarchistic terrorism to overthrow a corrupt government and the blatant jabs at the current U.S. political arena, to graphic novel fans complaining about the reconstruction of Alan Moore's original vision (Moore himself has dismissed the film). Many are valid critiques and opinions, but there's no hiding the message the film is trying to express: Radical and drastic events often need to occur in order to shake people out of their state of indifference in order to bring about real change. Unfortunately, the movie only offers a means with no ends, and those looking for answers may find the film stylish, but a bit empty. --Rob Bracco
On the DVDs
On disc 1 is a 16-minute documentary "Freedom! Forever!: Making V for Vendetta" with discussions on the movie's origin and themes by the principal cast and crew (no Alan Moore or Wachowskis, to no one's surprise, but the graphic novel's illustrator David Lloyd is on hand to call the movie "a very good version"). On disc 2 is a 17-minute production featurette, a 10-minute history of Guy Fawkes, and the 15-minute "England Prevails: V for Vendetta and the New Wave in Comics." Lloyd and others from the comics industry such as Paul Levitz and Bill Sienkiwicz talk about the graphic novel and how it appealed to a different, older audience. The second menu of the second disc also has an easy-to-find Easter egg of a rapping and swearing Natalie Portman on Saturday Night Live. --David Horiuchi

loved this DVD. Very haunting. Hard to get out of my head.
Leaves other similar classics such as Phantom of the Opera, in the dust.
V Is For Very Good........2007-06-29
I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would have. It Really is worth viewing in my humble opinion and is nowhere near as bad as some professional critics claim it to be. I thought V was a very good character and Hugo Weaving did a great job of portraying him on screen. It's taken me awhile to get around to this movie but now I've watched it it's on my "to watch again" list for sure. Great stuff!
Totalitarian Dystopia,Huh?.......2007-06-29
Wow! It's all here...a vigilante(and failed government experiment gone rebel)waging war on a "totalitarian" society wreaking of the "fascism of Christianity", religious/cultural bias, and outright intolerance in the name of God. V's objective? Freedom by any means necessary...a donning of the mask to unmask the monstrous hypocrisies of a world under the iron curtain of a particular faith. A message shouted a million times before and a keeper for atheists and agnostics...by the way, I'm a born again Christian who's secure enough in his faith not to be offended by the portrayal of faith in this film...so if my applause is rubbing any religious heads the wrong way...grow up.
A great thought provocative tale.......2007-06-26
I loved V, I would classify it as a thriller and a "what if". The stage is set in London, England but this tale could really be set in any society that once had a democratic government. It shows the horror of what could happen if a society freely gives up freedoms for protection. I also really enjoyed the message of freedom and the power of ideas that were throughout this tale. A must own!
A movie that invokes thought and emotion.......2007-06-26
Scanning the other reviews it's obvious that this is a movie that will affect you one way or the other. I'll avoid the political and social commentary and diatribes in my review.
The acting was exemplary in my opinion. Portman did a great job (as usual), but I have to tip my hat to the actor who had the task of playing the role of V. It has to be difficult to use purely gesture and voice inflection to play a part, and he was excellent! I could imagine the emotions hidden behind the mask.
Yes, the film could be interpreted as being somewhat "preachy" and portraying a transparent political and/or social agenda, but it makes one think. It can evoke strong emotion. To me those are things that can make a movie great.
I could've used less gore in the final battle scene between V and the bad guys though. Really wasn't necessary.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked man (Hugo Weaving) known only as "V." Yes, the film could be interpreted as being somewhat "preachy" and portraying a transparent political and/or social agenda, but it makes one think. It can evoke strong emotion. To me those are things that can make a movie great.
I could've used less gore in the final battle scene between V and the bad guys though. Really wasn't necessary.

Do Not Waste Your Money.......2007-01-24
This DvD is not even worth 5 dollars. The only reason I Purchased it was because of Ms. Cleo. It starts off with some guys asking her some Questions about her sex life for about 15 mins, Then she starts dancing (Which was the best part of the whole film). The second chapter has some Black Bike/Black College Weekend footage with mostly showed cars, Hardly any girls doing anything interesting. Then it ends with some Stripshow footage which was blurry and very short. I wish someone would have wrote this type of Review for me before I brought this damn DVD.
"Screening Copy Only" `watermark'???.......2006-12-02
Babes Going Bananas: "Shake It Like a Salt Shaker" 'appears' to have "Screening Copy Only" `watermarked' THROUGHOUT the ENTIRE dvd!?!? i feel it's a slight omission NOT to have mentioned this? i mean who, with any sense, is going to want their `Babes Going Bananas' with WRITING OVER THE BEST BITS???

Customer Reviews:
Blatant display of idiocy.......2007-06-03
1. This looks like someone's final project from a high school film class...it is completely amateurish in design, conception and presentation.
2. The "filmmaker's" heart does seem to be in the right place BUT he really has absolutely no knowledge of dog training, development, behavior and breeding (things that someone who is undertaking a documentary about dogs should have at least a passing unerstanding of); thus the information he presents is simplistic and not always accurate. He doesn't make good use of the interviews with professionals and spends way too much time interviewing idiots.
3. The filmmaker alludes to the APBT being a loyal, loveable family member; capable of succeeding in a number of activites. However does he interview and depict any of the thousands of pit bull owners titling their dogs in obedience, agility & weight pull? No. Does he show any of the pit bulls that work daily in search and rescue and as therapy dogs? No. Does he show pits cuddling on the couch with their families? No. He shows what seem to be his dogs, kept outside, on chains, looking completely untrained and quite frankly neglected. He makes a big deal about taking one of his dogs "off the chain"...he then proceeds to let it drag him around the yard on a leash...WTF...anyone ever heard of "heeling" as in actually taking the time to train your dogs? I thought I would be treated to his dogs doing an obedience run through: sit, down, roll over, shake...whatever. NOPE. I did get to see a game of tug of war with an old towel that seemed to be trying to play up the dog's "tough image". When I play tug of war with my pit bull she sits for the toy to be presented and waits for the "take it" command. She also "outs" on command when the game is over. I expected the filmmaker to show something similar to really show how obedient and trainable these dogs are. Again, great big NOPE!
4. He spends his time interviewing inarticulate dog fighters who speak from behind masks, turn their backs to the camera and use the F word way too often (not a moral judgement here...but when you use it as every other word...are you really even saying anything remotely cogent?)
5. He interviews 2 breeders who (again, while their hearts seem to be in the right place) are not stellar examples of breeders ...which is who the filmmaker should be looking to if he is indeed trying to defend the breed. Unfortunately we are treated to some feel good rambling by back yard breeders who make absolutely no mention of genetics, health testing, early & on-going socialization and of course TRAINING.
6. I made it through the entire video; but it was painful. The pictures of dog fights and injured dogs were unpleasant to say the least. However the greatest difficulty was; from what I had heard, I thought finally the APBT was actually going to be SHOWN as the wonderful, loving and intelligent family companion that it can be...only to be treated to more footage of inarticulate, idiot dog fighters. Blech!
I agree with Ramos.......2007-05-21
Even though I can honestly say that I HAVEN't watched "Bloodline" through its entirety but for what I saw really didn't impress me much.
I would advise to get "Off The Chain" if you want a documentary about Pitbulls.
"Off The Chain" has alot more substance than "Bloodline"
In my opinion.
Disappointed.......2007-05-15
Even though an attempt to bring an awareness of dogfighting was made, the video is overall unimpressive at best - boring, repetitive, hypocritical, unorganized, uninformative, lacking in style/interest/engagement...you get the point, i hope.

Not worth it.......2006-11-08
I ordered Rump Shaker and another Babes going Bananas Dvd, along with a Joe Pro: Still Crunk. The Joe pro was good. But both babes Going Bananas sucked. The girls looked bad, and they had the same scenes on both DVD's. The only thing different was that Ms. Cleo was in a different room. Do not buy this. If you want quality then go with the Joe Pro.

While history books often use the 1921 Sacco and Vanzetti case as an example of justice falling victim to the bigotry of the times, this HBO movie--based on a turn-of-the-century New Orleans trial--provides a far more sobering example. Vendetta opens with a montage of black-and-white photos of immigrants arriving in the U.S., accompanied by an audio track of anti-immigrant invective that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Christopher Walken lends his always unsettling presence as the city's largest cotton exporter and mastermind of a plot to take over the docks from the Italian immigrants who run them. When police chief David Hennessy (Clancy Brown) refuses to go along with the plan, he's shot and killed, and a random group of Italian produce merchants are accused of the murder. The trial and its appalling aftermath are portrayed with a realistic vehemence that may make some viewers flinch. Director Nicholas Meyer has coaxed powerful performances from a cast of mostly unknown actors, most notable among these is Alessandro Colla, who makes his debut as 15-year-old Gaspare Marchesi and provides the film's few smiles. The pacing makes Vendetta hard to follow at first, but as the subplots begin to converge like cars speeding toward the same intersection, the film compels you to keep watching until the inevitable conclusion. --Larisa Lomacky Moore
Customer Reviews:
Not as polished as it could have been.......2007-05-12
Walken is a joy to watch, but the whole movie is bland. There is no cohesive feeling of a city and its people. We do not get a flavor of the population in and out of New Orleans. The violence is too contrived and meaningless. We see no real port, just a market where the central action takes place. This is a very low budget film and it shows. The history involved is not accurate.
America--home of the brave and the bigoted.......2005-04-13
African-Americans and Jews were not the only ethnic groups to bear the brunt of violent, narrow-minded bigotry in the land of the free. In the late 19th century, Italians in New Orleans were lynched for a trumped up charge based on the pure greed of the "city fathers". Greed, said Gordon Gecko in the movie Wall Street, is good. Wrong, Gordon.
Greed is corruption. Corruption is inextricably and inevitably linked to violence. When some people are greedy, other people get hurt. Or die. That's what happened. This made-for-HBO film, Vendetta, is a well thought out depiction of the events culminating in the terrible slaughter of Italians at that time. Although Christopher Walken is the marquis player--and he is, as usual, really good--credit should also go to the supporting players, all of whom were well cast here. Kenneth Welsh, Edward Herrmann, Bruce Davison, Clancy Brown, Richard Libertini, and the younger actors whose roles are the Provenzano brothers and Gaspare Marchese are all excellent.
Many people, including myself (Jewish), did (or do) not know about this horrific event. It is to HBO's credit that they dramatized this telefilm under the direction of Nicholas Meyer (The Seven-Percent Solution, The Day After). Credit should also go to writer Timothy Prager whose script is rock solid. HBO has produced many well-crafted cable TV films and this is certainly one of them.
Will greed in America ever go away? This film says no. And I think that's true. It will certainly continue to be in place with the man currently running things in a white office that not quite circular, circa 2005. He's not a tree, he's a (fill in the blank).
Definitely recommended.
From Gangs of New York to a Lynch Mob in New Orleans!.......2003-07-28
This film is a forgotten contribution to public understanding of the history no history teacher wants to tell you. That is precisely why you need to see this movie. While it is not at the same quality level as "Gangs of New York" there are definitely highlights of quality work. Christopher Walken has a special style of playing villains. When you are ready to shoot him, you have to realize he just "got you." This is the mark of a real actor in a villain role. This is basically one of the most compelling stories of political corruption, and was the largest lynching in American history. Many good Italian American families suffered in the process.
Racism + Capital = Murder.......2002-07-12
Turn of the century New Orleans boasts a bustling port, a key revenue maker for the up and coming Italian immigrants struggling to cross the barriers installed by the WASP establishment and now tolerated Irish. Christopher Walken plays the key figure in the established world of commerce who can't seem to buy or bully his way into the market the Italians have locked up. He uses his political influence to bring further pressure to bear, and when the local police Chief, portrayed by Clancy Brown, now making a career of playing lawmen and prison guards, is assassinated he'll use the law of the courts and if that fails - the mob, to get his way. This true story is a strong testament to the slimy underside of the 'land of opportunity'. The combination of the posionous weeds of bigotry and the greed of finance capital proves a deadly one as a handful of Italians, including Walken's key business rivals, are rounded up for the murder of the Chief. An excellent courtroom drama makes up for an uninteresting romance between a young Italian boy and Irish girl that the film uses to lighten the load. The sterling performances of Clancy Brown and Bruce Davison, unrecognizable despite his dozens of TV movie appearances, in a tour de force role as defense attorney, earn this drama it's fourth star.
See What the Irish in New Orleans Did To The Italians!!.......2001-03-27
When we hear of lynchings we often think of African-Americans being strung up by the KKK. But the biggest mass lynching by a vigilante mob in the U.S. happened in 1890 to the Italian immigrants of New Orleans. HBO should be commended for having to courage to make a film about the most tragic time in Italian-American history.
In the film, 20 Italians were arrested at random and put on trial for the shooting murder of Police Chief Hennessy, an Irishman who may have been prejudiced towards Italians but would not lock them up unless he had concrete evidence against them. In other words, conspiracy and membership in a group whose name was heard for the first time--the Mafia.
In the trial, the Italians were acquitted. But that didn't stop a crazed vigilante mob from breaking into the city jail with shotguns and blowing them all away. (The film, however, shows that two do survive.) When the king of Italy heard about this he almost started a war with the US. Instead, then President Benjamin Harrison gave $25,000 in restitution, and everyone forgot about it. But not the Italians who witnessed the bloodshed for themselves. It's too bad the Mafia weren't there at that time; they could've fought back.
All the trouble starts when Mr. Houston, played by Christopher Walken, wants to get control of the docks which are run successfully by Mr. Macheca and the Provenzano family. He relies on the corrupt law system, but even the DA, played by Edward Herrmann, believes there's no case. He says, "Why would Macheca be with the Mafia? He's rich. He's got nothing to gain and everything to lose." The prejudice of the city fathers is remarkable. They always refer to Italians as either dagos or Italians with "I" pronounced like "eye".
In the end Mr. Houston takes over the business which Macheca built up from the bottom by himself. A statue is raised to the memory of Hennessy; but is there a monument in New Orleans to the killed Italians? It's amazing to see how some people thought nothing of toting shotguns and committing murder. Viewers of the film "Rosewood" will find this familiar ground.
One more thing: Unlike other ethnic groups, Italians have never bought into the cult of victimology. They do not issue calls for reparations. But every Italian-American should be aware of what happened a century ago in New Orleans. To this day there are still morons who believe that all Italian-Americans are part of the Mafia. And TV shows like "The Sopranos", now matter how riveting, do not help the image of these people, either. If you are Italian, and you see this movie, you will cry like the Jews after the Holocaust--"Never Again! Never Again!".

Customer Reviews:
OK DVD !! Fine Women Just Don't Get Out Anymore!!.......2007-03-12
This DVD showcases girls, cars and bikes at the myrtle beach event for black colleges. The dvd continuously plays the soundtrack (background) music and it is an ok assortment of songs. I have to say that the quality of women who attend these events have gone down. Not-So-Attractive women love to attend these events because the guys are nothing but walking hard-ons, who just drool over anything and these women love the attention and they do whatever it takes to get it. The ladies in this video were basically nothing off the scales, honestly barely mid level, but I laugh at the fact that at these type of events including spring break, that these women act like they're all that thanks to the losers oogling over their T&A. This DVD is OK, one time watch, nothing more.
Black Bike Week.......2007-01-11
The DVD covers all of the bike week including cars, women, and bikes. You really dont hear the traffic sounds, or cars or people talking. The background sounds or people talking is over shadowed by continuous background tracks. When you do hear background sounds or people talking its hindered since the music audio is higher than the verbal or background tones. Watchable, but not worth a DVD collection.
