Archival Benefit.......2006-08-09
I expected the footage to be somewhat degraded, but was hopeful that given the product editorial: "This tape is top quality..." I might be in for a pleasant surprise. I was, the footage is so grainy and dark that you cannot make out the faces. The only advantage to the production is for the witness via glimpses now and then of titans of karate in their prime. Be suspicious of offerings from Rising Sun Video Productions: witness the botched sound quality of their Hirokazu Kanazawa "Mastering Karate" series.
Too bad to review.......2006-03-04
When this DVD was sent to our magazine (Classical Fighting Arts) we refused to review it on the grounds that it was of such poor quality it was not fit for sale. Our publisher felt that, because of the high standards maintained by our publication, even a bad review might enhance its value in the eyes of our readers, and therefore the best policy was to decline.
Basically this program (like most of the others from this source) is odds and ends of really bad 8mm. and home video footage, crudely cut together with entry level software on a cheap PC. The only possible excuse for buying it is if you are a collector, and if you are, you probably have all this footage anyway as much higher quality copies have been around for years.
There are professionally made DVDs dealing with this subject that have high standard of content, editing, and overall production. Companies like Legend productions and Tsunami have outstanding products that are "Broadcast Quality" in other words, good enough to show on the Discovery Channel, TLC, History Channel, etc. in the same price range.
JAK Masters 70's .......2005-11-19
Amazing rare footage of all the JKA Masters ... not much narration but the footage alone is a must ... the techniques that are shown and some of the fighting from such masters as Nakayama, Kanazawa, Yamaguchi, Shooji are very intense. This DVD is great to watch.
