I would recommend this for anyone. It's something that draws your attention so well. Sometimes you follow individual people in their efforts to explain some wild weather, and other times see tragic advents or watch amazing footage or learn about the science and nature about a certain storm. A tornado, perhaps, or an earth quake. Sometimes you even get some history with different time periods.
I will never regret watching this. It's made me more aware of storms than ever before.

You will love this DVD set by National Geographic. They have put some of there best shows in this collection. It has some great bonus features too. I love watch documentaries about nature and are plant. This set was very informative and great to watch. Nature Fury was the best out of all 3 shows.

The Restless Earth Collection by National Geographic explores aspects of natural disasters, space phenomena (asteroids), and weather systems that affect our world throughout our lives. Spread out over 3 discs, the material is presented in a well narrated, matter of fact approach that keeps your interest throughout the programs.

'Asteroids: Deadly Impact' explores the history of asteroid and comet strikes on our planet and speculates on what future consequences we might experience when (the law of averages are we will be hit again someday) that impact occurs. Interviews with experts on heavenly bodies and our solar system reveal interesting information regarding our ever changing galaxy.

'Volcano: Nature's Inferno' is an excellent documentary on the massive and awesome display of incredible power harnessed by the earth. Volcanologists are followed to various areas of the globe where they research, report on, and study some of the earth's most active volcanoes. There is really impressive footage of lava flows, eruptions, landslides, and avalanches. A bonus feature on this disc is 'Into the Volcano' where a seasoned photographer and his crew venture close to active volcanoes and craters and record amazing footage.

The last and most interesting disc in this collection, in my opinion, is 'Nature's Fury'. Here is a no holds barred look at earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. The overwhelming power and devastation of these natural disasters have to be seen to be believed and it is truly astonshing in almost all cases. This disc documents Mother Nature releasing her fury in locations throughout the globe and how science is working today to better understand what causes these disasters to happen and how we can better prepare for it. Two bonus programs on this disc are 'Tornado Hunters' and 'Lightning Strikes', both are interesting and offer decent material.

All in all, National Geographic has produced a nice collection here that doesn't disappoint. The DVD footage is very clear and impressive and each disc offers Dolby 5.1 Surround which sounds really good. If there is any down side at all, it may be that more footage would have been nice of the natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes) and that is my reason for only 4 stars. Still, for the asking price, this is a worthwhile purchase if you enjoy this subject material. Recommended.

I use this movie regularly in the introduction to astronomy college course I teach. It is a very engaging story, first about Gene Shoemaker, then about Gene, his wife, Carolyn, and their friend David Levy. The movie works on several levels. First, it introduces the subject of cratering and its role in the formation of the planets (and its ongoing effects!). It also shows clearly how science is done, and how one man's quest can change the course of scientific ideas. As a particular bonus, the film makes clear the joy and excitement these people find in doing science and figuring things out. Although I have shown it many, many times, I always find myself being drawn into watching it just one more time...

This is a well-done piece about one of the great planetary events of our time: the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter in 1994. It also tells the story of how Gene Shomaker, almost single-handedly, proved that impact craters on the moon and on Earth were, in fact, caused by impacts and not by volcanism. I have used it many times in general astronomy classes and it never fails to engage students, most of whom had not thought about the topic before. It also presents Gene and Carolyn Shoemaker, and their colleague David Levy, as the warm, engaging people with real passion for their work that they really are. It is too bad that Gene has left us, making an update difficult. My only comment about the negative review below is that it is irresponsible for someone to review a video s/he has not completely viewed.

5 out of 5 stars What's That Up In The Sky?.......2004-09-07

It's astonishing that as recently as 1963 the preponderance of opinion was that Meteor Crater was not caused by an impact.

After the last lunar landing impact was established as the overwhelmingly dominant process at work on the lunar surface, but such impacts on Earth were generally still denied.

Despite the fact that the Alvarez theory gained ground from 1980 until the middle of 1994, impact as a common occurence continued to be denied. After the SL9 impact on Jupiter (well covered in this video) the last significant resistance to the K-T impact as the mechanism of extinction for the dinosaurs was swept away. That this catastrophe on another world brought about an overnight change in the sciences was appropriate.

Now there are many impact craters recognized AS impact craters found throughout the world and not just in some comfortably remote location like the Moon or Jupiter. It is now much cheaper to read constrasting views about such events since the anti-impactors' books have appeared in the remainder lists.

Oddly enough, there's still the occasional attempt to deny impacts, such as the 12th century impact on the Moon observed from England, and the attribution of Martian impact craters to volcanism. Perhaps that odd resistance to the idea of impact will someday soon die out. When it does, good riddance.

Asteroids Deadly Impact is my favorite National Geographic video of all time, and I believe I've seen them all. Perhaps it would be a much better world if people would tune out the daytime (and nighttime) tv garbage and watch stuff like this. Certainly would be worth a try.

The video covers the history of impact geology by recounting the career (through 1994) of the now-deceased Eugene Shoemaker, including his finds in the Ries Basin (an impact crater), Barringer Crater (impact crater which we know as "Meteor Crater"), and of course the comet(s) Shoemaker-Levy 9 and his role in the Apollo missions.

This DVD version was a welcome addition to my video collection. The extra features are a bit of a dud (NG ads, and a sort of quiz about impact that eventually loops around to the beginning) and there are some slight changes in the soundtrack (if memory serves), but it's the same show as on VHS, without the degradation of picture quality.

There are too many unrelated scenes shown in this documentary. It lacks a good coverage of the overall subject and I consider the overall quality as extremely poor, without an in depth review. I found it so bad that I did not even watch it completely and I therefore would not recommend purchase

    this movie has a couple of mediocre fight scenes but sadly most of this movie has to do with (I am not makeing this up) the charicters political life as running for office. the fight scences have little to do with teh plot, not that there are very many. now there are a lot of B movies worse that cost a lot more but this just doesn't offer much. I reccomend Daneil bernhardt gary daniels and billy blanks. their movies usually have more action and quality
