ok mix one part guns, one part kung fu and add in a dash of post apocalyptic future and you have an idea of what a thrill ride this film is! Superb acting by Bale and others in this film. its about a new age where society has no "feelings" because if you forget to take your "meds" to not feel you WILL be arrested for sense offence! what a wild ride as bale the Tetragrammaton Cleric begins to "sense" the rebels and decides to take the fight to them. however he begins to see how this new society is corrupted but can he save the last of the human race in time? watch this exciting film and find out! (this is what Could happen with censorship! you have been warned!)

5 stars! and 5 star acting! as good as the matrix fighting and fight scenes!

Equilibrium

I didn't understand what was up with the hero's kid, but ..........2007-06-12

So I missed out on exactly what was going on with the little boy even though I watched the movie twice. I forgive myself for not getting it and I'll watch it again until I *do* get it.

I enjoyed this movie for its thought-provoking creation of a maybe-future. To feel or not to feel? To shoot the puppy or save the little fella cuz it wags its tail and licks your face? To turn on your neighbor cuz he's not like you or ask what drummer he follows?

Me, I enjoyed the drama of the government control, its keep-the-status-quo army of trained killers, and the "what works best for the good of all" plotline in general. Plenty of action held my attention throughout.

Highly recommended for sci-fi/action fans.

Happy, kick-butt-and-take-names kind of equilibrium.......2007-05-23

The trailers for EQUILIBRIUM kick a**. Guns, explosions, Matrix-style shots, a futuristic world, Taye Diggs and Christian friggin' Bale. But while the trailer looked attractive, it's well-known that many a polished trailer has masked a giant turd of a movie. I was willing to take that chance, however, and picked up this flick one night to see if it had the goods.

The result? One h*ll of an action flick, that's what!

It's not enough that EQUILIBRIUM was rife with things that went BOOM. The fact that it fused action with martial arts made it that much cooler, much like what the Matrix did by melding martial arts and cyberpunk. From there, it held me on the edge of my sofa with a suspenseful man-versus-Big Brother plot wrapped inside the bigger theme of feelings and emotions and how mankind would be nothing without them. Bale's character misses a dose of his emotion-numbing medication one day and--bada-bing--the tide of revolt against Big Brother has turned.

And the ending didn't disappoint, although it was a bit easier for Bale to save the world than I thought it should be. There was also A LOT of dummy dialogue that was used to bring the audience up to speed on the backstory. Very clumsy and awkward. The biggest complaint, however, focuses on the irony of many of the bad guys getting angry at Bale and the freedom fighters. In a world where emotion is a criminal offense, why doesn't anyone take them in?

Now I'm not saying EQUILIBRIUM is a great movie in strictly cinematic terms. It's imperfect and flawed. But in terms of an action picture? Rarely does it get better than this. If you like your action fast, explosive, and hardcore, do yourself a favor and rent EQUILIBRIUM.

One Of Those Movies That Slipped Through The Cracks.......2007-05-18

That scene where Bale inerrogates the female sense offender and his watch beeps to remind him of his next prozium dose...I have the blue faced version of it!! I got a lot of excellent comments from everyone who has seen it!! Awesome conversation piece! Oh yeah, the movie was cool, not the most original story line though. If Bale was to play in a "big brother" movie, he should have been roled as Neo in the matrix!!! That would have been 4 stars better that the "totally bogus" Reeves who has carried that stupid stoked surfer accent in all his movies.

Claustrophobia and bloody mayhem collide in the high-adrenaline horror flick The Descent. Six women (including one who lost her husband and child the year before, and one who harbors a bitter secret) spelunk in an unexplored cavern system that turns out to harbor mysterious, predatory creatures. That sums up the story, but--as with writer-director Neil Marshall's previous low-concept movie, Dog Soldiers--the plot doesn't begin to describe the riveting, stomach-lurching thrills this movie provides. The script affords the relatively unknown cast (led by Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza, both excellent) just enough room to make their characters distinct and genuine, so that when they're dropped into utmost peril our empathy is engaged as much as our fear. The dynamic direction and editing make the cavern a palpable, physical presence, even before the creepy beasts crawl out of their nooks. This is not a movie for everyone; it is extremely gruesome and will induce panic attacks in anyone with even a mild fear of closed spaces. But for anyone seeking something smarter, faster, and more wrenching than static torture-fests like Saw or Hostel, The Descent will draw you into its unsettling ooze. --Bret Fetzer

Definitely a scary movie that keeps you on edge! Make sure you pump up the surround sound on this one! Grab the popcorn but be warned... it will end up on the floor, on you, and in between the couch!

The Descent.......2007-06-19

I went to see 'The Descent' which is a movie about four friends who go on a caving trip and face their worst fears whilst they're down there.
Would these movies be as scary as they are without the unexpected loudness in all the places? Probably not. Still, it was quite interesting for what it was. Kinda like the 'Poseidon' of the caves, wandering through unnavigated areas trying to find a way out, and tragedies occuring frequently along the way.
The monsters got a bit much though. Creamy yellow slimy monsters which scream at and eat people. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all. They all look like Golum from 'Lord Of The Rings' still.
At least the movie wasn't an American blockbuster, it was English. That's something. And you kinda get to know the characters, understanding their personalities in every scene, learning their names and not forgetting them, remembering when someone has died.
My favourite characters were Holly and Juno. Holly was funny and knew how to have a laugh. She annoyed everyone else but she was probably the funnest of them all. No-one really liked Juno but she meant well. I think she would have tried her best for her friends and wouldn't purposely try to hurt them, still, she was the hated one in the end.
The scariest part is when the real life realities are shown. How when we rot away (or in this case flesh eaten by raging mad monsters) all that we are, are bones underneath, and how death can happen so easily. It's frightening how each and every one of us are so robot like, we're machines, humans with minds, feelings, thoughts and emotions, but our bodies are totally separate from that; one false move and we're gone, nothing can change that. No happy endings make me happy though, that's for sure :)
Decent enough movie though, worth seeing. 3 stars.

If you like scary...you get it........2007-06-14

This movie was way too suspenseful for my taste but it was a horror flick. Very scary, very entertaining, keeps you jumping, hiding your eyes, and on the edge of your seat. The ending was very confusing to me though...watch it and let me know if you feel the same.

Absolutely terrifying!.......2007-06-04

This is one of the better horror movies in recent years...it centers around six women who are brought together after one of the group has a personal family tragedy. They decide to go on a caving expedition deep in the Appalachian Mountains, where they find themselves trapped in the caves. The true horror begins when they discover that the cave is also home to a group of carnivorous beings that defy description...they are that horrifying to look upon. What makes this movie rise above the average horror flick is that the characters are all well-defined, and though they are all relatively unknown, they bring a certain depth to their roles, and each character has something to offer. The main character, Sarah [Shauna Macdonald] is most convincing in her transformation from a passive, grieving woman to a violent, avenging 'angel'. The suspense in this movie builds up in tempo before it is fully unleashed in the showdown between the monsters and the remaining survivors. The cinematography effectively evokes the strange subterranean world inhabited by the creatures, evoking both its beauty and horrors. All in all, a human drama and horror story that makes for compelling viewing.

With a tantalizing "what-if?" scenario and a respectable cast of Hollywood veterans, The Final Countdown plays like a grand-scale episode of The Twilight Zone. It's really no more than that, and time-travel movies have grown far more sophisticated since this popular 1980 release, but there's still some life remaining in the movie's basic premise: What if a modern-era Navy aircraft carrier--in this case the real-life nuclear-powered U.S.S. Nimitz--was caught in an anomalous storm and thrust 40 years backwards in time to the eve of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor? Will the ship's commander (Kirk Douglas) interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst (Martin Sheen) convince him not to? Will a rescued senator from 1941 (Charles Durning) play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? Veteran TV director Don Taylor doesn't do much with the ideas posed by this potentially intriguing plot; he seems more interested in satisfying aviation buffs with loving footage of F-14 "Jolly Roger" fighter jets, made possible by the Navy's generous cooperation. That makes The Final Countdown a better Navy film than a full-fledged time-travel fantasy, but there's a nice little twist at the end, and the plot holes are easy to ignore. James Cameron would've done it better, but this popcorn thriller makes an enjoyable double-bill with The Philadelphia Experiment. --Jeff Shannon

While this film's special effects are very dated, the overall film is quite inventive and fun although it is not very original. The story has the stoic Kirk Douglass as the commander of the USS Nimitz, a nuclear aircraft carrier, that is accidentally (?) transported back to the day of Pearl Harbor's attack. Naturally, they take some time getting used to the idea of time travel, but once that sets in their bigger dilemma is deciding whether or not to change history and stop the pending attack on Pearl.

The story line is compelling and there are some intriguing plot twists. Also, the film is well-acted by very familiar faces in addition to Douglass such as the great character actor Charles Durning as a pivotal 1941 U.S. Senator and potential president to succeed FDR should history be altered, the regal Katherine Ross as his assistant, the always believable James Farentino as Douglass's right hand man who is a secret historian writing a book on Pearl Harbor, and the terrific and awfully young looking but ever-confident Martin Sheen (whose hairstyle changes with nearly every scene) who is a mysterious civilian "observer."

My only complaints about this film are the special effects which were poor even for its time, the dialogue which is stiff is some places and overwrought in others, and the absolutely horrific score which I wish was forgettable; it was best suited for a western and not a military film. My son jokingly said that he expected to see General Custer and his troops at any moment on the deck of the carrier. Other than that, this film is good fun, has an intriguing idea, and has some nice plot twists.

What would you do if you were in command of the U.S.S. Nimitz aircraft carrier (yes with F-14 tomcats) and you suddenly found yourself located exactly 2 days before the attack on pearl harbor, having gone through a swirly light, and loud noise. (they get knocked out by the noise)its the day before the attack on pearl habor. right down to radio frequencies being different its so unique. this is one of those rare films that came out and surprised many people with the cool idea of being in a place and time With everything needed to change history! then all thats left to decide is to change the past or not? this film is dated and is restored fairly well however its still a great film starring kirk Douglas. truly a classic great! 5 stars!

Story: The U.S.S. Nimitz, a nuclear aircraft carrier, encounters a strange storm in 1981 and, when the ship clears the storm, the crew eventually figures out that they have been catapulted back to 1941. Specifically, they end up one day before the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, and they are near Pearl Harbor. A fully-armed nuclear aircraft carrier, with a full complement of 1981 aircraft, right where it could do a lot of damage to the Japanese invasion force, possibly even destroy it. So, the question becomes, "Should they?" Should they tamper with history and re-write it? They are United States military servicemen, in a combat situation, and most the crew says, "Go for it!" But, what of the ramifications? That question becomes highlighted when a 1941 Japanese Zero blows up a 1941 private yacht, near the U.S.S. Nimitz, and the survivors are rescued by the 1981 Navy. Amongst those survivors is a powerful Senator, who could end up being Franklin Roosevelt's Vice President in 1944 (instead of Truman) and then succeed Roosevelt when he dies, thus changing politics from 1941 on.

Cast: The cast is impressive, with Kirk Douglas as the Captain of the Nimitz, Martin Sheen as a Department of Defense observer, Charles Durning as the arrogant, powerful, but basically ethical 1941 Senator Sam Chapman, Katharine Ross as Chapman's beautiful and intelligent assistant, and James Farentino as the Executive Officer of the Nimitz, who is also a history buff writing a book about the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

What was done right: I like Kirk Douglas, and I like how he did this role, with a mixture of intelligence, confidence, and command presence. I also like the premise, which would have horrified Star Trek's Captain Picard ("The Temporal Prime Directive! We must preserve the time-line!"). The footage of the aircraft was impressive, the plot twists were interesting, and I really enjoyed the small surprise at the end.

What could have been better: I did not care for the special effects, especially the temporal storm episodes. They seemed cheap to me, even by the standards of when the film was made (1980). The script was weak at times, with Martin Sheen's dialogue sounding melodramatic, and the melodramatic effect was sometimes exacerbated by a musical score that sounded soap-opera-ish at times.

Personal comment: Perhaps I like the premise of The Final Countdown more than most because I appreciate the manifestations of World War Two. My father was an American soldier when he met my mother in Belgium. No war means no meeting, no wedding bells, no me. I cannot say that my existence counters the horrors of World War Two, but I do appreciate the complex consequences of a world-wide event.

4 years before "The Philadelphia Experiment" there was ... The Final Countdown.......2007-04-28

I think "The Philadelphia Experiment" is better than this movie, but this one came out 4 years before that one. Imagine a US naval fleet being transported back 40 years to the day of the bombing of Pearl Harbor with the potential to change history forever. Essentially this is more brain candy than an action fest but anyone with an interest in maritime themes or fighter jets will love it, especially when F14s are scrambled to intercept the Japanese.

The ending doesn't really resolve anything (what could one expect? Nazi America because they never enter the war?... but with a ship like that on their side... oh heck you get the picture, this is brain candy more than anything else....) but at least it leaves you thinking and on top of that there are quite a few surprises along the way. This could have been a lot worse, but wasn't. Worth seeing, but get the Philly Experiment first.

Really the only thing that I miss is not been able to share it with many of my Spanish-speaking friends and family members because it lacks audio in other languages or subtitles. Otherwise, I fell more inclined to keep returning to the Happiest Place on Earth.

FANTASTIC!!!.......2007-01-27

This is a MUST for Disney fans. Besides showing images from rides that are not on Disney DVDs, they present much information about the construction of the parks and the backstage of WDW. The DVD presents everything in a chronological order, separated according to the theme parks and it includes the uptodate information, like the Expedition Everest ride.
It's a pity not having subtitles. But I really recommend it.

Awesome Disney Info........2007-01-09

Bought this as a xmas gift for my husband and kids. After a recent trip to Disney, this was an amazing video to watch. I have passed it along to friends to see as well since the information was exceptional. I would recommend it to anyone who has been to Disney as well as to those who have not been.

Inexpensive Backstage Tour.......2006-10-11

I rated this only four stars because the audio track on my DVD was out of sync with the video. It appears that the film to DVD transfer didn't compensate for the film audio being several frames ahead of the images.

On the other hand I now have images of the Utilidors. I managed to take two backstage tours of Walt Disney World during the 1990's. The Keys to the Kingdom tour and the three-park Backstage Magic tour were expensive and took up an entire day--but I thought them worth the trouble and expense. It took me three years to book the Backstage Magic tour, and for several good reasons I didn't get to take home photographs of the backstage areas such as the Utilidors. Modern Marvels provided me video images to keep these vital infrastructure of Walt's utopian village fresh in my mind.

I learned about the new Expedition Everest ride, and how the Tree of Life was grown by the Imagineers. I love the Monorail system and the Contemporary Resort--featured! This DVD lets me tour Walt Disney World and its secrets in the comfort of my home, without flying cross-country and putting up with crowds. It isn't "the real thing," but this DVD allows me to scratch my Walt Disney World itch until I get the time and a couple of thousand dollars to return to Orlando.

Low budget greatness.......2007-06-12

The Descent didn't actually scare me, but it came closer than any film I've seen. The claustrophobic angles and dark, nearly pitch black lighting really gave it an effect I haven't seen since Pitch Black. The creatures were well done and nearly believable, and quite frightening. I would hate to be in the caves with them. Since this was a horror/thriller, the story wasn't expected to be very dense, and the characters weren't expected to be atypical, and this is usually the fault with this genre. If you want to terrify the audience, you need to identify with the victims and get to care for them. In this film we're just barely introduced to them enough to get to know their stereotype. But all of this doesn't matter when they enter the cave system and we see the beautiful underworld. This cave has never been mapped, so this is the greatest adventure these spelunkers could hope for, until the crawlspaces collapse behind them. With no way back, they move onward looking for an exit when the dark, confined spaces start to take a toll on their minds. But being stuck under the earth is the least of their worries. I really liked how well the film was made, and how complex the story got once the action got started. I said early we didn't expect the people to be atypical, but they really developed under the pressures of darkness, flight and survival.

TRULY SCARY - Blu-ray Perfection!.......2007-03-14

I love a great horror film that can actually make you want to turn the light on or lose sleep after watching it. Every so often a film comes along that accomplishes this and 'The Descent' is a prime example. The film is a departure from the clutter of junk horror films that have been released over the past few years by not merely infiltrating you with just startle scenes. The sheer fear factor of being trapped hundreds of feet below ground with the prospect of death at every turn is simply the cornerstone of the aural terror you feel throughout most of the film.

The Blu-ray presentation is immaculate from the reference quality video to the PCM 6.1 lossless audio track that is amazingly immersive. A must see for any horror fan and a 'high recommend' for anyone!

I guess everyone's opinion will vary, but I found this film and it's story to be completely lame. First of all, anyone who has EVER spelunked knows that you do not enter a cave without a map. Perhaps if you're some kind of professional adventurer and have the tools, support personnel, and the resources perhaps. However, this group of women certainly did not fit the bill. The characters were not well-developed, as some other reviewers would have you believe. They basically each seemed to fit into the stereotypical "group of gals" roles, when you were given any kind of glimpse into their personas. Really the only characters that were at all developed was the main character and Juno (the idiot that lead her friends, unknown to them, into an unknown cave system), and the both of them barely at that. All we really know about the groups is that they're women, Juno is something of an adventurer and probably had an affair with the main character's husband, and the main character's husband was tragically killed shortly after the group's last adventure.

Once we get into the cave the movie starts to take off...if that's what you want to call it. Yeah, they did a good job with the camera work and lighting, lending a sense of claustraphobia. The 'monsters' in the film really didn't go very far instilling fear into the viewer. The big mistake they made was in showing the enemy. In a movie like this, what you don't know is more scary than what you do know. Unfortunately, they didn't leave you with this fear of the unknown for long. After a short time, I found myself hoping for the ladies' deaths to come quick so that the film would end. I won't ruin the ending, but many of you will be saying, "What?" when the 'twist' is revealed. Fortunately, I rented this movie on NetFlix, so I lost out on nothing more than an hour and a half of my time.

Fire and Ice (Ralph Bakshi, 1983)

Sometimes I wonder what on earth filmmakers were thinking when they made movies. More often, I wonder what I was thinking when I was enthralled with them. In this case, though, I don't need to do either--when Fire and Ice came out, I was fourteen years old, male, and not terribly experienced with the opposite sex--in other words, I was Ralph Bakshi's exact target audience. Now I'm thirty-eight, married, and have a more encyclopedic knowledge of eighties and nineties exploitation cinema (read: porn) than I'm sure anyone in my family would like to acknowledge; rewatching Fire and Ice these days, I look back and grieve that my fourteen-year-old self had such bad taste. (But then, in 1983, my all-time favorite movie was Deathsport. No, I can't explain it either.)

Fire and Ice, which All-Movie Guide calls "Bakshi's last stab at epic fantasy", concerns two kingdoms, the established human kingdom ruled by fire, and the upstart kingdom of outcasts and half-breeds, the kingdom of Ice. Needless to say, one is wise and good, and the other is twisted and evil. Interestingly, there are a few places in the script where denizens of either kingdom could waver from their one-dimensionality and suddenly bring depth and richness to the script; we're dangling there waiting for Bakshi to drop the apple into our mouths, but of course it's snatched away as quickly as it's offered. Cruel, I tell you. But then, no one's supposed to be paying attention to the script; we're supposed to be too busy, erm, "watching" Tigre (voice of Cynthia Leake), who starts the movie wearing something that looks as if it's supposed to be a diaphanous lavender negligee over a couple of pieces of filmy stuff that pass as underwear. But only for the first third of the movie, after which the negligee-thing goes away. Draw some luscious, and entirely unrealistic, curves, and the audience's collective brain will be interested in nothing else; at least, this seems to have been the thinking behind this production. (Add in a cameo from Batman--and I swear, the character looks like the ancestor of the animated version of Batman from the seventies--and you'll kill off the last few collective brain cells still struggling to recover from the onslaught of Tigre-flesh.)

But the worst part is that, after realizing all this, I still sat through the entire eighty-one minutes this weekend. I'm pretty sure I didn't drool, but there may be some extra gaps in the gray matter I should probably have my doctor take a look at. *

Slow moving rotoscoped animation.......2007-05-26

The storyline for this movie was interesting, but took so long to get moving I started to lose interest. If it was a one-hour movie, it probably would have been more entertaining. The Big Bad Evil Ice Guy is attempting to conquer the Good Guy Fire King, but most of the time is spent with the Fire King's scantily clad, fantasy-proportioned princess running from ape-like soldiers and being rescued over-and-over by a sole-surviving warrior from one of her father/king's tribes. It all wraps up very quickly in the end. If you like Frazzetta, then you'll notice this is a whole movie of his paintings in rotoscoped animation.

Action Packed Fantasy Fun!.......2007-01-03

I highly recommend this title to anyone who likes films in the fantasy genre. Even after all these years I still enjoy watching this film for what could probably be the 100th time. The animation techniques were very innovative for the time. The storyline is compelling and the characters are fascinating. This is one DVD that I am very happy to have been able to get my hands on and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and special.

He is awesome. Anyone who dobuts the Rotoscope, see this movie.

Know what's cooler? If you are an illustrator/animator, you could do that movie today? (Hopefully something original along those lines)

Just get Poser 5 or higher, a good animation software package (ToonBoom seems to be leading) and work out a storyboard. Then, have the 3D figs act out the basic moves and trace over them, using the computer to extend your art style.

A literal "Animated Movie" would still be a labor of Hercules, but 3-10 minute shorts would be quite doable;-)

The first real Dario Argento film...........2007-06-18

To me, this is where Dario Argento's career really started. He had made 4 films prior to this (the "animal" trilogy, and a barely seen Western, The Five Days of Milan), but I never liked his early films (I saw The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Cat o' Nine Tails. Bird is decent, but rather boring. Cat is terrible, especially in its dubbed version). The amazing thing about Profondo Rosso (aka Deep Red...the original Italian title sounds so much better) is that even in its mutilated 98 minute version, it was still amazing (though incoherent) filmmaking. Essentially, the American distributor cut out 28 minutes of really important plot detail, but left most of the violence in the film. Now, Anchor Bay has given you the original film, and in the original Italian with English subtitles. The longer version is much more coherent, explaining the plotline and the motivations of the characters, and giving more of a role to Daria Niccolodi, Dario's girlfriend of 10 years. The music of Goblin (their 1st colloboration with Dario) is magnificent. It's just as good as their Suspiria soundtrack, and the fusion of Dario's cinematic sense and Goblin's music sense is one of the most fruitful colloborations in cinema history. The performances here are above average for a Dario film, with David Hemmings playing the usual English speaking artistic type getting caught up in a murder mystery (typical Argento plot). It's nice to see Argento's work restored, as almost EVERY film he did during his heyday was cut and sometimes renamed (for example, Phenomena was cut by 28 minutes and retitled Creepers, and Tenebrae was cut by 9 minutes and retitled Unsane). This was Dario's first masterpiece, and the beginning of a remarkable run for him up through his last great film, Opera. Many of Dario's films are really artistic and strikingly shot, something he's never really given credit for.

Jaw Dropping.......2007-05-18

This is not a contradiction: While Susperia is in my opinion the best horror film ever made, making it the scariest movie Argento has ever made, I still think that Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) is Argento's masterpiece. Why? While Deep Red is not as scary as Susperia, it is a better movie. Deep Red wins my vote as the best giallo film of all time. Buy this film at once. It demands repeated viewings. In this giallo, a jazz pianist witnesses a murder from the street and, feeling heroic, rushes into the building in attempt to aid the woman in peril. He runs into an apartment decorated with an abundance of paintings, only to find that the women is already dead. What follows hinges mainly on what has become Argento's main plot device in giallo films, namely, a mystery created in the mind of the main character of the film as a result of the fallability of human memory. As one character in the film states, memory is like a cocktail, and sometimes the flavors of past events get mixed up, becoming indistinguishable from one another. The Bird with the Crystal Plummage, Susperia, and Sleepless, to name a few, all contained mysteries pertaining to inaccurate, imperfect, or even blatantly false recollections of events which have come to pass. In Deep Red the main character swears that a painting has been stolen from the apartment he rushed into. He vividly remembers seeing one that is no longer there. The police dismiss his claims, saying he's mistaken. But there his memory is, lingering, haunting him, compelling him to play detective, as he becomes obsessed with jogging his memory. The entire issue in this movie pertaining to what he actually saw in the apartment is handled by the director geniously, for you too also get to see what the main character does, and likely will also miss it. I will say no more on the matter; I do not want to spoil the effect. This film is repleat with Argento's signature touches, the mobile camera, the black-gloved killer, and a brilliant use of color. Critics have often come down on this film, failing to give it the respect it deserves. One reason, I would surmise, is that the film as a whole is a bit tarnished by the corny relationship between David and Argento's once wife, Daria. These brief scenes aside, many of the sequences of this film dazzle the viewer with their technical mastery. The scene when David Hemmings keeps playing the piano with one hand though he hears an intruder on the other side of the door is masterfully executed, as are David's excursions into the creepy house with a hidden room. The editing in the film is nothing short of brilliant, as when the protagonists enter the school toward the end of the film. The picture cuts to various scenes, including the image of a bathroom wall with the graffito 'kill your parents.' The soundtrack to this film is one of Goblin's best. For interested readers, this film is actually a remake of Michelangelo Antonioni's masterpiece Blow Up, which also starred David Hemmings. There Hemmings played a photographer who, after photographing scenes in a park, swears he captured a murder in one of his photos. Though most critics prefer Blow Up to Deep Red, I, like Argento, find Blow Up's surreal conclusion to be a tremendous let down, and personally find Deep Red to be the superior of the two films. (Blow Up was also remade by Brian DePalma as Blow Out.)

good horror,classic giallo.......2007-05-12

excellent horror/giallo by dario argento.superb atmosphere,cinemaphotography,suspense,set piece work,good locations.personally i reckon this to be one of argentos best films along with 'suspiria'.compared to most other examples of the genre-great care and imagination has gone in to this one with great results.dvd quality is excellent with good subtitles(my preference when watching foreign films) and the film is of course completely uncut in widescreen.this is easily the best edition -can't see it being bettered.

Fantastic film... About the Blue Underground Release.......2007-05-11

This has always been one of my favourite Argento's. Stylish and clever with fantastic music, a wonderful atmosphere and some stunning set pieces. It also features (unusually for an Argento film, as he's not known for his patience with actors) a truly convincing performance by the main man, David Hemmings.

The Blue Underground edition is exactly the same print of the film as the Anchor Bay release (now out of print), which means it has sections that drop into Italian dialogue (some sections the English could not be found for, and some it was never recorded for as the scenes were never included in the international versions, only the Italian cut).
Whilst it is great to see the movie complete, it is very distracting to switch randomly and without warning between Italian language with subtitles and English without.. which leads to a temptation to watch the whole movie in Italian. Whilst this is usually a good idea with Argento's films, Hemming's performance in Deep Red is so subtle and nuanced that it is a great shame to diminish it by watching it with Italian dubbing. Dilema!!!

Anyway, the film is worth owning regardless of these frustrations. If you don't have the Anchor Bay version, I highly recommend you get this one (oh, and it has a great cover too!)

Decent film. The anchor bay version had italian audio on the restored scenes. It's kinda wierd because the film randomly breaks from english into italian. Did blue underground fix that on this disc?
