When people think of James Dean, they probably think first of the troubled teen from Rebel Without a Cause: nervous, volatile, soulful, a kid lost in a world that does not understand him. Made between his only other starring roles, in East of Eden and Giant, Rebel sums up the jangly, alienated image of Dean, but also happens to be one of the key films of the 1950s. Director Nicholas Ray takes a strikingly sympathetic look at the teenagers standing outside the white-picket-fence '50s dream of America: juvenile delinquent (that's what they called them then) Jim Stark (Dean), fast girl Judy (Natalie Wood), lost boy Plato (Sal Mineo), slick hot-rodder Buzz (Corey Allen). At the time, it was unusual for a movie to endorse the point of view of teenagers, but Ray and screenwriter Stewart Stern captured the youthful angst that was erupting at the same time in rock & roll. Dean is heartbreaking, following the method acting style of Marlon Brando but staking out a nakedly emotional honesty of his own. Going too fast, in every way, he was killed in a car crash on September 30, 1955, a month before Rebel opened. He was no longer an actor, but an icon, and Rebel is a lasting monument. --Robert Horton

Description

In one of the most influential performances in movie history, James Dean plays the new kid in town whose loneliness, frustration and anger mirrored those of postwar teens - and still reverberate 50 years later. Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo were Academy Award nominees* for their achingly true performances. Director Nicholas Ray was also an Oscar nominee for this landmark chosen as one of the all-time Top 100 American Film by the American Film Institute.

5 out of 5 stars Rebel Without a Cause.......2007-06-26

One of the most iconic films of the 1950s, Nicholas Ray's "Rebel" was the movie that cemented James Dean's reputation as the embodiment of the restless, disillusioned teen. Hyped as a story of juvenile delinquency, "Rebel" questions the suffocating complacency and conservatism of mid-century American society with raw force. Fresh from his debut in "East of Eden," Dean is explosive as the brooding, misunderstood Jim, his performance equalling Brando for its moody intensity, while Wood, Mineo, and Jim Backus (as Dean's spineless father) make stellar additions to a superb cast.

Rebel Without a Cause is the first movie of James Dean's that I've ever seen. I plan to watch his other two because this one was so good that I didn't want it to end. James Dean was one of the most beautiful actors I've ever seen. It wasn't just the way he looked,(though that helps of course) but he also had this charismatic way about him that makes you want to watch his every move.
I think that's why, as I was watching the movie, I started noticing that he reminded me very much of the character Ryan Atwood on the OC. I first noticed the way James Dean looked at people. He had the same manner as Ryan does on the OC. James Dean moves his eyes to the right or the left sometimes instead of straight ahead. His eyebrows raise slightly and his smile is never more than a grin. It's a very endearing quality and it's why I noticed it so quickly into the movie.
Then I noticed the way James Dean smoked. James Dean made smoking cigarettes look like an art form instead of something that could cause cancer. lol And in the first episode of the OC, Ryan took out a cigarette was he was talking to Marissa and he looked exactly like James Dean did. At the time though, I just thought Ryan was being very "cool" and "sexy" since I'd never seen Rebel without a Cause. I had no idea the two looked so very much alike in their mannerisms.
There are other similarities to the movie and to the OC, such as the mansion the trio run to in the movie, and the model home on the OC where the teens on there go to hide Ryan. I'm not sure if this look for the character Ryan Atwood was done on purpose to make him seem like a 'James Dean' type or if the storyline was just a coincidence but my point in saying all this is that I think kids today can relate to this movie. Even though Rebel without a Cause was made over 50 years ago, teens today deal with parental issues, peer pressure, rejection and feelings of first love.
I would recommend this movie to anyone ... especially teenagers .... who get tired of the same type movie they see over and over. Rebel without a cause is a true classic and I hope that anyone that hasn't seen it, gives it a chance and watches it just to see for themselves that not all movies that are old, are 'old fashion' and boring. This one is great and it's one I could, and will watch many times. And I'd really like to add that OC fans should watch it just to see what I'm talking about. I'd like to see if anyone else noticed what I did.

5 out of 5 stars Rebel Without a Cause.......2007-01-30

A classic movie that mirrors the time when the United States was in the midst of prosperty following World War II. After years of rationing goods, Americans were buying washing machines, televisions, and cars. True, the Communist scare and the war in Korea marred all the good news, but there was something underneath all the happy families living in the suburbs with pink bathrooms or bedrooms. Teenagers were looking for something more relevant in their lives. Reble Without A Cause reflected what appeared to be teenage angst but these feelings are what swelled into the rebellion and demonstrations of the 60s.
The two disc DVD has good information about the making of this movie with cast and production people. It is a sad irony that the three leads died too soon.

Mumia: A Case for Reasonable Doubt joins the likes of The Thin Blue Line, Brother's Keeper, and Paradise Lost in its depiction of a justice system that is sometimes not conscientious about whom it convicts. Mumia Abu-Jamal had been on death row for 14 years at the time this film was made in 1996, following his conviction in the shooting death of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Yet the film makes a persuasive case that events, as told by eyewitnesses whose original statements are claimed to have been either coerced by the police or concocted to please the prosecution, did not unfold the way the investigating officers say they did. A "confession" the police claim they got from Mumia in the hospital (both he and Faulkner were shot) never happened, according to the attending physician who was with Mumia the whole time. Forensic evidence suggests the murder weapon was not the one carried by Mumia, who worked nights as a cab driver, and in any case the weapon had no prints on it. The judge on the case was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and had the largest murder conviction record of any judge in the country. On the other hand, Mumia, formerly a member of the Black Panthers, refuses to give a full account of what happened the night of December 9, 1981, when the murder occurred. The seeds of doubt sowed by this film should be enough to make anyone crave knowing what really happened. --Jim Gay

The only people who would disagree with this mans story..are those that are a part of the oppressive system of criminal justice..either in Philadelphia or elsewhere. As a current investigator it is easy to see the violations in this case..I can sense the racism and overall lack of fair play as it relates to wanting to keep a voice from being heard..
When one is as articulate as Mumia abu Jamal, it should be easy to understand how and why Pennsylvania wants to kill him..That police officer was killed by his own..and Mumia will be free..that is why he is still alive. gET OVER IT

More lies from the Mumia followers. Don't support a convicted murderer by buying this. If you have questions go to www.danielfaulkner.com. Daniel Faulkner was the police officer killed by Mumia.

1 out of 5 stars Lack of a "fair" trial does not equal innocence.......2004-03-19

As a hardcore progressive activist (involved in the peace movement, oppose the death penality, etc.), I've followed the Mumia situation for quite some time. However, I've been troubled, not by the pro-death penality advocates, but by the Pro-Mumia movement itself which has repeatedly relied upon lies and manipulation to make a case for Mumia.

There are claims made in this documentary that don't hold up to scrutiny.

The caliber of the gun "not matching" the murder weapon: This claim is based on a hand written note of the initial doctor who saw Faulkner's body who had very little training in ballistics. Afterwards this doctor retracted his statement and stated quite bluntly that he was just guessing. Those trained in ballistics have stated that the bullet that killed Faulker did indeed come from the gun owned by Mumia. It was in fact Mumia's gun which killed officer Faulkner. Did Mumia pull the trigger? We can't be 100 percent sure.

Mumia's brother has not testified on his behalf nor made ANY - EVER - public statement in defense of Mumia. And Mumia's brother was at the scene of the crime. Mumia activists state that the brother won't come forward because of fear of reprisals. This just doesn't make sense. Mumia has been on death row! Couldn't he make a video statement taped in another country which won't extradite him should there be any ramifications from his actions?

Mumia's confession: Pro-Mumia activists claim that the police officer who quotes Mumia confessing to the killing only came forward months after the fact. The argument is that a confession of this importance should have been reported immediately and that this kind of behavior indicates a possible fabrication given the delay. This seems to make sense on its face. However, there was another witness to this incident. A hospital security guard reported within a day or so that Mumia had confessed to the shooting. Pro-Mumia activists point out that the guard was a "friend" of Faulkner. OK, maybe that creates bias, but the fact of the matter is, the guard's statements destroys the attack on on the delayed police report - because there was no delay. This doesn't mean that no one is lying, of course.

The trial: There is in fact evidence to show that Mumia did not receive a fair trial. However, as pointed out by others, Mumia certainly didn't help his case by being disruptive. The man seemed almost intent upon angering the judge and doing everything possible to have himself removed from the court room.

Eyewitnesses: This is perhaps the most problematic portion of either side. Some say Mumia did it, some say he didn't. Some say there was a running man from the scene of the crime. Just about all the witnesses have ulterior motives and could be dismissed as lacking credibility.

Many people don't realize this, but Faulkner had on his body a driver's license which had not been called into the police department. The obvious conclusion is that this license belonged to a third suspect (Mumia, his brother, and someone else). Tracing this license, the police discovered that it belonged to a man with a solid alibi - but he had loaned it to another man who was a friend of Mumia's brother. Voila. Now you have the "running man." Unfortunately, this man has been dead for many years now, killed in an apparent gang shooting.

So did Mumia do it? And did he receive a fully fair trial? The evidence points straight to Mumia as the shooter. However, none of this means he got a fair trial or that the police didn't lie to make their case.

The problem is, Mumia has come to represent much more than a single event. Progressives of all stripes bring this case up as evidence of police lies and manipulation. This is unfortunate. Mumia's case is not as clear cut as activists make it out to be. Even worse, the constant arguing of his innocence damages the credibility of an entire movement which opposes the death penalty and the rampant racism within the US justice system. More than any other case, Mumia has come to represent to death penalty advocates the overall "lies" of the progressive left.

This documentary only contributes further to the damage.

2 out of 5 stars Who needs sound anyway?.......2005-10-01

I bought the DVD with an eye toward using it in a forensic evidence class. Unfortunately, the sound on the video is dismal. The doctor mumbles and the other pathologists look like deer in headlights. You would think there might be more than one choice for a topic as educational as an autopsy.

The reviewer who mentioned lack of context is exactly right. No history was provided, and to come to closure on the actual c/o/d was no small accomplishment either.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this film..........2005-09-23

You would be better served and entertained watching the HBO series "Autopsy" with Dr. Michael Baden. This struck me as a cheap and quick attempt to cash in on the popularity of forensic science. In this film you witness an autopsy of an elderly woman. No history is given and no explanation is given as to what is being done or why. If you do not have any medical training or background, you won't get anything from watching this.

5 out of 5 stars Behind the Scene of the Medical Examiner's Office!.......2004-11-24

Great DVD, not for children, but very educational. This DVD shows every aspect of an Autopsy, from Speculating the cause of death, preparing the body, incisions, descriptions of what is being looked at and why, including weights, to the conclusion of the autopsy! This DVD gives you the feeling that you are actually a part of the Autopsy yourself!

Suspense thrillers are supposed to keep you guessing, I guess. Unfortunately, this film offers little in the way of plot twists beyond the standard devices you've seen a hundred times before. Patrick Bergin looks like he's in it strictly for the money and Joan Severance hides behind layers of pancake to disguise her wrinkles. Take a pass.

    5 out of 5 stars Delicious.......2006-06-01

We saw this sophomore year in Honors Humanities after reading Antigone. I enjoyed it very much. It was actually very educational. I now understand that there are some very strange people in the world. This video was almost like "educational" softcore porn, which pretty much everybody in my class enjoyed. If you want to make somebody laugh, this is the movie to have them watch, but make sure they understand Antigone's story first.

1 out of 5 stars Just. Plain. Awful........2006-03-16

Maybe this film has some redeeming qualities. I sure couldn't find any.

This movie is essentially soft-core porn with a really bad soundtrack. The costumes clash (you have some characters wearing basically rags and the rest wearing things that wouldn't be out of place in the Matrix). I really haven't found a lot that matches up with the actual play. I wish the characters would actually speak themselves, instead of having a narration. After all, I'm sure they're not all mute.

This tops my 'Worst Films Ever Seen' list, which isn't very long. And I'm sure it's on a 'Worst Films Ever Made' list. Somewhere. I hope.

1 out of 5 stars Give it an "A" for "awful".......2004-03-11

From beginning to end, the students in the AP English Class at my high school where stunned by the "over-dramatic" and offensive imagery portrayed in this movie. It was too much to bear. I would never, ever recommend under any circumstance borrowing, buying, or being gifted with this film.

    1 out of 5 stars psuedo-intellectual bombast.......2003-12-05

Where to start? Amy Greenfield's "emotionally relentless, visually stunning" interpretation of the classic play is admittedly "relentless" and I was indeed "stunned." The video was purchased to augment an eleventh grade honors class, ostensibly to show a different, modern, visual interpretation of a Greek classic that touches us still, thousands of years later. Sophocles's play does still affect us today because it taps into primal human issues--family honor, immortality, fate, the role of government, faith, and the list goes on. Greenfield's overblown piffle does not. I do not recommend this for anyone, except as a study in bad, self-important "Art" with that tell-tale capitol "A". This isn't dance. The important dialogue is absent. The music is discordant, oppressive and the best part of the whole mess. The oracle at Delphi was clear to both Oedipus and his father, Laius: Oedipus will kill his father, marry his mother and have monstrous children. Finally, in the form of Amy Greenfield's "Antigone: Rites of Passion" we have the monstrous child at last. Apollo is always right. And you know what? He'd tell you not to buy this turkey.

5 out of 5 stars An descent, powerful and emotional look on Antigone.......2002-04-28

When I ordered it I did it because I knew that Diamanda Galas - my favorite artist - was partially responsible for the music. I'm usually very pre-occupied with modern "glances" on Ancient Hellenic tragedies. It is my belief that a remake of something as classical, as powerfull and as timelessly meaningful as every Ancient Hellenic tragedy is can be eigther a masterpiece or a complete disaster.
The first few minutes that I watched, I felt that it would be a disaster but I thought "what the hell, I gave my money to buy this DVD so I'll watch it to the end". And so I did.
I'm not in a position that makes me to say only that I fortunately didn't switch off my DVD player. I'm in the position to say that I feel extremely previleged to have Amy Greenfield's work on Antigone. And that's because I figured out that she has kept a very basic element of Ancient Hellenic tragedy. The slow and escelating motivation of the viewers interest for the play. Antigone realy gets more and more interesting as the minutes pass.
I won't get involved in a detailed analysis of the film witch realy exposes its meanings and its power little be little. I just want to say that Amy Greenfield did such a splendid work that she deserves to claim that she did a remake equal only to masterpieces.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars CAUSE OF DEATH.......2001-10-05

This film is NOT BAD, it has a real noir feel to it even for it's small budget. Good action and thrills. Jones seems to really have a good grasp as a writer and director. I can tell he must be a "Marathon Man" fan. I really enjoyed this film.
