Here's today's trivia question: What Disney movie costars both colonels from television's M*A*S*H--that is, Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) and Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan)? Heck, that's easy: 1978's The Cat from Outer Space, a family comedy about a feline extraterrestrial named Jake (voiced by actor Ronnie Schell, who also plays Sergeant Duffy). Eerily similar to the plot of Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, released four years later, Cat finds Jake stuck on Earth and in danger of being trapped here forever if his fellow space kitties can't rendezvous with him soon.

While a gruff Army general (Morgan) tries to scare up some answers about the whereabouts and agenda of the purring alien, Jake allies himself with an unorthodox scientist (Ken Berry), plus the latter's friend (Stevenson)--a compulsive gambler--and mathematician girlfriend (Sandy Duncan). Together, they try to raise the scratch to purchase expensive materials to make Jake's ship run again, and in short order. Norman Tokar, an old Disney hand (The Happiest Millionaire) directing his final film before he died the following year, gets the comic machinery going with his slick cast of character actors (Roddy McDowall, Jesse White, Hans Conried), sly one-liners, and lots of enjoyable suspense. A kid-pleaser for sure. --Tom Keogh

Robin Williams in his fuzzy, sensitive mode with bittersweet touches plays a musician in a Russian circus who gets talked into defecting by a pal and does so (though the pal bails on him at the last minute)--in the middle of Bloomingdale's. A great concept, to be sure, but writer-director Paul Mazursky doesn't seem to know where to go from there. Williams winds up living in the same kind of poverty that he did in Russia, casting about for a way to make a living while both wallowing and drowning in the sudden tidal wave of freedom. Mazursky wants to make a point about how little we appreciate what we have, but he fails to entertain in the process--or at least to engage in a consistent way. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Robin Williams at his finest!.......2007-06-07

I don't always agree with Robin Williams' standup humor but IMAO, he is a consumate actor bordering on dramatic and comedic genius. In this film he convincingly potrays a Russian circus musician that follows thru the dreams of his close friend by defecting to America.

What strikes in my mind about this film is when his girlfriend and many immigrants are granted U.S. citizenship. With the current state of today's political correctness, the judge's words still ring true when she states "no longer will you be a hyphenated American". What a delightful statement for all Americans.

4 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Gem of Robin Williams.......2006-02-23

One of Robin Williams Early works and Sadly a Forgotten Gem of him. Sometimes Sad, Sometimes Funny as can be it showed his range and abilities even then. He Plays a Russian Circus Musician Tasked to keep an Eye on his friend who has made "Noises" about defecting when the Circus Travels to NYC. Don't want to ruin the Story or Surprises (If you are surprised) but this is a wonderful Story that will take you from Sad to Happy to Laughing and back again.

If you liked Dead Poets Society you will LOVE this.

4 out of 5 stars a really good film ............2005-11-24

It is a good American movie about a Russian emigrant in NYC. Most of the viewers praise Robin Williams. Indeed, he plays very well the character of the Russian musician and there is no doubt - he is a great actor. But in this film, you have got a very rare chance to see the greatest Russian comedian Savely Kramarov (staring as head KGB man ). He died from cancer ten years ago in California. But his art and his films are still alive. Every film in which he took a part was automatically a hit in Soviet times. The tickets were sold out at cinemas and streets were empty during TV-broadcasts of his films. In "Moscow on the Hudson" he created a funny and grotesque image of KGB man (as he did it again in the film "RED HEAT" directed by Walter Hill) and I was enjoying watching his work there. It reminds me his best Russian films. I am sure you will appreciate it too.
The film is not perfect of course. Some stereotypes about Russia are implemented (such as the refrigerator full of vodka instead of food) Robin Willams struggles to speak "bad English" and has it hard to pronounce Russian words properly. But despite these small problems in showing life in Russia, the film gives a very authentic picture of the "Big Apple" and it is really good one.

5 out of 5 stars Would give it ten stars if I could.......2005-11-16

While I absolutely love this movie, it, like any work of art, has flaws. Now, that said, I didn't see this movie when it first came out. I didn't see it until literally 20 years later! It still holds up well, but I was amazed at the blatant sterotyping that occurred in the film. The thing is, it happens with everyone from African-Americans to Russians, and even to WASPS. So I guess that cancels the thing out in a way.

This is a very touching movie and Robin Williams is probably at his best--and this is hard to do as he never bombs. Here's one actor who should be given more awards and credits for his acting ability--and this in addition to him being the world's greatest comic, no less!

Strangely, aside for my aforementioned comments on sterotyping, the movie does not seem dated--aside from a few glimpses of the World Trade Centers in the background, and it is a wonderful portrait of NYC. Really, I'm amazed this isn't more watched than it is. I highly, highly recommend this charming and enlightening film.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom isn't free and other things to think about .................2005-09-07

For many years, I counted Moscow on the Hudson as my favorite film and if you like to be mildy entertained while considering what it means to be free in the USA, you may also love this thoughtful comedy. This was the first film that broke whatever box folks might have been trying to put Robin Williams in (after Mork and Mindy) and added Actor with a capital A to the public perception of him (at least for those who had the chance to see Moscow).

Among my favorite lines in the film is the disenchanted emigree played by Robin in a blue moment saying "When I was in Russia, I loved my misery, because it was mine." I think of this when I meet people whose eyes are closed to how precious our freedom is and the cost we must pay to learn to respect and treasure it.

There are many great scenes worth the wait, such as the final statement scene in the diner where other Russians who have learned how to deal with freedom, set the little Russian straight.

This is not an action filled or laugh filled romp. It is a film that requires a little patience and reflection, but an illumination to those with an open mind. Bravo Mazursky and Williams!

4 out of 5 stars No comedy, just great acting from Jackie Chan, Kam Kong, and everyone else.......2007-04-15

Jackie stars as a mute who has grown up at a Shaolin monastery since he was a boy and trains to become a fighter so he can revenge his father's death one day. He meets a prisoner played by Kam Kong, one of the most likeable kung fu actors ever. He develops a strong relationship with Jackie and helps him with his training so he can beat the Shaolin wooden men and leave the monastery. Jackie taking on the robot like wooden men was actually exciting because of his great acting and kung fu skills. This movie is definitely one of his best physical performances. There is a lot more to the story and it all results in an incredible emotionally charged ending.

It was great to see Jackie giving such a different type of acting performance, but the kung fu is of course the brightest spot in the movie. Kam Kong is a large man and can do some amazing kung fu with that big frame. I wish him and Jackie would have fought more in movies.

I love cheesy movies, but this is the complete opposite. There is no cheese to be found, it's just a very good kung fu movie.

3.5/5

I have the DVD from Telefilms International and it's watchable. Hong Kong Legends just released this uncut, but I don't know of any other uncut versions.

4 out of 5 stars An almost mute Jacky Chan!.......2006-10-27

Shaolin Wooden Men was the second film Jackie Chan did for Lo Wei Productions and the first film he did under director Chen Chi-Hwa (who also directed Jackie in Half a Loaf of Kung Fu) - though Lo would get Supervising Director credit. Chan was lent out to this up-and-coming director who would give him more room to experiment. Jackie gave more effort on his martial art styles by mutating traditional forms like the snake form (one of Jackie's favorites) giving more flowing and flamboyant movement and being less classical in structure. Unfortunately, he did not have much say in his character development with a character that was still in Bruce Lee's shadow. Shaolin Wooden Men was considered the second flop in a row for a Jackie Chan led film.

Jackie played a mute young man (called Dummy in the dubbed version) whose father She Lan was killed by an unknown assailant. I've read a couple of different rumors on why Chan was mute in this film: to make it easier on him acting and the other rumor was that Lo did not have confidence in his acting skill. Jackie's character has sworn revenge and to increase his martial artist skills he becomes an earnest student in a Shaolin monastery. He has trouble at first adjusting to monk life. Such activities as using lead shoes to carry water up and pour in barrels and chopping wood was difficult for the mute but he would note be prevented from learning Shaolin martial arts. It would normally take five years of this training before he could start on his fighting training, but the mute was crafty. He learned balance techniques from a drunken monk (Miu Tak San). He befriended a visiting female Buddhist named Nun Woo Mei (Cheung Bing Yuk) who taught him "Ten Shadows Eight Steps" to make him lighter on his feet. Several scenes of this technique reminded me of several of Missy Elliot's videos.

In order to leave the Shaolin monastery Jackie would have to pass a test of fighting. He would have to go through a gauntlet of mechanized Wooden Men (strangely looking like a Monty Python gag) that many monks with more advanced training that the mute have failed. The mute was lucky in finding a Shaolin prisoner who befriended him and in exchange for food and wine would train him. Fa Yu (Kam Kong) is a curmudgeon character who says he is only captured until he learns "The Lion's Roar" which will shatter the internals of his enemies (or at least provide a cheesy sound effect.) He taught the mute several techniques which would help him pass the gauntlet as well as improve his fighting prowess.

The Shaolin Wooden Men only play a small part of this film. The mute inevitably passes the test and burns the dragon and tiger insignias into his forearms by lifting a searing hot cauldron that marks the opening into freedom and the beginning of his travails. First he must deliver a message from Fa Yu to a gimpy pharmacologist who owns the Tsun Chung Pharmacy in the town of Ching Ho who is part of the Green Dragon and White Tiger gangs. This pretty much establishes Fa Yu with those gangs and the rest of the film deals with the (other) inevitable aspects of his escape and why he was imprisoned by the Shaolin.

The martial arts are above standard, but not as good as the later Jackie Chan films. Though the final fight sequence does last awhile and is the highlight fight of the film. The plot is a martial art cliché with a student enrolling in a Shaolin Academy to learn Kung Fu to avenge the death of his father. There is also the ubiquitous training manual "Justice against the Devil" given to Jackie by a blind monk. However, the relationship between the mute and his teacher Fa Yu is an interesting angle reminding me of the relationship of Yuen Biao and Lau Kar Wing in Knockabout. Chan seems a little unsure of his acting ability, even without voice, but he always looks professional with the martial art choreography. I think most people will like the later Jackie Chan films better, but if you find a decent copy of this film they will think it is a decent film -- though not much better. Note: look for an early small speaking role for Yuen Biao.

DVD Info: Choosing the right copy is also important. I own two different copies of the film both with their own problems. The Columbia copy reigns in about 96 minutes though it misses 10 minutes of the beginning. These ten minutes are very fun to watch. It includes the "showcase" beginning with Jackie fighting four monks each with a different animal style. It then includes his character having a nightmare dealing with the Shaolin Python Wooden Men and then a sequence showing normal life at the Shaolin temple. The Columbia version is also cropped to a 1.78 aspect. The line on the DVD about preserving the original aspect is hooey. The benefit of this DVD is that it has the Mandarin soundtrack and good subtitles. The second version I own is the Telefilms Internation DVD (also R1 and also hooey about being the Original Uncut Version) which has the original aspect, a more clear screen and the beginning that is missing in the Columbia version. This version is missing ten minutes that are in the Columbia version though it cost me only two dollars. It is missing any extras like subtitles or other languages. So the best thing to do is look for a copy that has 106 minutes or over, is not cropped and is not R1.

1 out of 5 stars ORIGINAL IS BETTER~!.......2006-02-05

If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE TYPE OF JACKIE CHAN MOVIE I LOVE AND MISS .......2005-05-16

REMEMBER WHEN JACKIE CHAN KICKED ASS? REMEMBER WHEN JACKIE CHAN WAS THE COOLEST MARTIAL ARTS STAR ALIVE? WELL, UNFORTUNATELY, THAT WAS BEFORE HE GOT OLDER AND BEFORE HE STARTED POPPING UP IN HORRIBLE MOVIES LIKE ''AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS'' AND ''SHANGHAI NOON''. IN THIS CLASSIC MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE FROM THE 1970S, JACKIE CHAN PLAYS A YOUNG MAN WHO'S CONSTANTLY HAUNTED BY THE FACT THAT HE WITNESSED HIS FATHER'S MURDER. AFTER LEARNING SEVERAL STYLES OF MARTIAL ARTS FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT PEOPLE [INCLUDING A PRISONER WHOM HE BRINGS FOOD TO EVERYDAY IN EXCHANGE FOR KUNG FU LESSONS], HE SOON SETS OUT TO FIGHT THE WOODEN MEN AND AVENGE HIS FATHER'S MURDER. A VERY GOOD MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE THAT HAS MEMORABLE FIGHTS, WHICH'RE ALWAYS FUN TO LOOK AT. THE MOVIE'S WORTH IT ALONE FOR THE CLASSIC CONFRONTATION BETWEEN JACKIE CHAN AND THE WOODEN MEN.

4 out of 5 stars Get Hong Kong version!.......2005-01-20

I agree with the other reviewers who said the Columbia-Tristar veriosn cuts out so many good moments (what WERE they thinking!?!?!)! I have the English dubbed version, and it's pretty good - I'd recommend it to all kung-fu movie-philes (and especially Chan-o-philes!). The athletics are superb, although the film quality is not top-notch (it is, however, orders of magnitutde better than the "pea-green" situation with the Columbia release!!!!!!). it IS one to enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars OF INTEREST ONLY TO SEE JACKIE CHAN AS A BAD GUY.......2003-07-30

IN THIS MEDIOCRE JACKIE CHAN MOVIE, A GIRL THAT'S IN A GANG TRYS TO GET OUT BUT THE GANG WON'T STOP TO HUNT HER DOWN. BUT WHEN SHE DIES IN A TAXICAB ON THE WAY TO THE HOSPITAL, THE CABDRIVER BECOMES A TARGET OF THE GANG, WHO THINKS HE HAS THE GIRL'S PURSE. THIS IS VERY MEDIOCRE FOR A JACKIE CHAN MOVIE. THE STORY IS DUMB, THE SCRIPT IS WACK, AND MOST OF THE FIGHTS ARE LUDICROUS. THOUGH JACKIE CHAN IS ON THE COVER OF THIS MOVIE, HE DOESN'T REALLY DO MUCH. THE ONE GOOD THING ABOUT THIS FILM IS THE FACT THAT WE FINALLY GET TO SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE TO SEE CHAN AS A VILLAIN. WANT A BETTER JACKIE CHAN MOVIE FROM THE EARLIER DAYS? CHECK OUT ''THE YOUNG MASTER'' OR ''SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW''.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad.......2001-07-27

"Young Tiger" is a pretty bad movie no matter what way you look at it. The acting is bad, the fights are mediocre, the dubbing is bad, and the focusing is terrible. It is almost like an amateur with a camcorder woke up one day and decided to make a movie. The only reason that I gave this DVD two stars is because Jackie Chan is in the movie.

--Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Purrrfect, Fun Movie:) .......2007-05-09

This was another one of my top Disney faves.Good, clean fun and the special effects aren't bad at all for the 70's!:)
LOVE the choice of cat they used and it was extremely well-trained to do all those moves and interactions like that! I wish they added special features like The Making of,etc..but GLAD they released this on DVD for the next generations to enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Another Disney Classic!.......2007-02-05

Zunar J5 Zoric 9/49 (aka; Jake) has emergency-landed his spaceship on Earth, and in order to make his deadline, he must acquire 6 cubits of a common, yellow, substance(SPOILER WARNING aka; $120,000.00 worth of Gold.) So he be-friends Frank, Liz, & Link(aka; Ken Berry, Sally Duncan, & Mclean Stevenson) and hurries to keep ahead of a General(Harry Morgan, another military leader) and the US Army, and an Industry Leader, intent on using the cat for Power and Financial Gain. Jake and Company must get Jake to the Mothership before it leaves Earth for 1,005 years. In short, this is another Walt Disney Classic.

4 out of 5 stars Space cat.......2006-11-10

Come to Earth, looking as any other cat, but his collar glows, causeing things to happen. A great family movie.
Ken Berry, Sandy Duncon are acting great.

4 out of 5 stars MAD ABOUT CATS.......2006-08-03

This is a fairly old Disney movie which I remember seeing the first time it came around. It is entertaining and kids should appreciate it. Be warned! I live in South Africa and this is the first time I have had problems with a Zone 1 movie from Amazon. I also bought 'The Three Lives of Thomasina' and 'Bell, Book and Candle' - same vintage - as I said, mad about cats!

5 out of 5 stars Abbysin-sational.......2006-05-20

This was the first movie that I ever *remember* seeing. It stands out in my mind (and yes probably has clouded my viewing judgement for years) because it was the first film to ever feature the mode of moggy that has been my constant companion for over 25 years - The Abbysinian. An Abby was the perfect cat to play Zunar-J5/9-Doric-47 (or Jake for the non fanatics out there). Being three years old and the proud owner of one of the first Abbys in Australia - I remember for days after putting different collars on my very patient cat Tawney and begging him to talk to me. He obviously didn't, and it broke my little heart, but what he couldn't express verbally he more than made up for with his smooches and furry nudges. Ok the Film never won an Oscar, it was a Disney Kid flick, but as kid flicks go - it was all right. And lets face it - I can't be all bad, McLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan AND Roddy McDowell! '

The bit of triva the really freaked me out so many years later was learning that Ronnie Schell was the voice of Jake... I was also addicted to another kids thing he had done... Battle of the Planets.
