This enjoyable and touching biography of martial-arts film star Bruce Lee stars Jason Scott Lee (no relation), an actor with a lively face and natural intensity, who makes every moment of this film compelling. Directed by Rob Cohen, Dragon traces Bruce Lee's slow rise over myriad obstacles--most of them race-based--to become an international superstar in films. Lee's origins are oddly set in San Francisco instead of his real home in Seattle, but then again there is plenty of artistic license going on as Cohen explores the actor's psyche through some powerful fantasy sequences. Lauren Holly is good as Lee's wife, Linda (whose book about her late husband inspired this movie). A scene involving Bruce's rescue of son Brandon (who died in a filmmaking accident in 1993) from a murderous spirit is plain spooky. The special-edition DVD release has a widescreen presentation, director interview, featurette, screen tests, closed captioning, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Bruce Lee Story.......2007-06-09

Story was well written, and Bruce's part was portrayed by his son, who is the most qualified to play his part.

4 out of 5 stars Imitating Bruce....?.......2007-03-19

Well lets start this by saying no one can can emulate Bruce Lee!!!! But, u gotta give Jason Scott Lee props for doing this movie ( plus he can act)....he did a great job considering the pressure he was under. Yeah we know that there are parts that inacurate but, remember it didn't say the true story! Great acting, Great fight scenes (could've had more) but very well put together...it's still a collectors item ! Plus i gotta give any of my fellow Jeet Kune Do' brothers props for portraying the art of JKD' so people will better understand what Bruce Lee went through to share his art with the world! Put this one in ya collectors group!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-01-19

I love this movie. I'll never get tired of this movie. Don't be fooled because it is the Bruce Lee Story. This Movie has more than just martial arts. I recommend it to everyone

5 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining.......2007-01-15

I'm not the biggest Bruce Lee fan in the world (heck, I haven't even seen one of his movies) but I thoroughly enjoyed this Dragon movie that follows the important events of his life.

We see him working as a dishwasher in Japan until he's offered a chance to go to college in America. When he takes advantage of this opportunity, he meets ultra-hot blonde chick Lauren Holly and they shower together and stuff. After graduation he struggles to open a martial arts school, and has a few bouts with a giant imaginary demon that has followed him from Japan to America. In addition to that, he has to fight a devestating paralysis while his wife (Lauren Holly) is pregnant with their first child. Man, talk about an uphill battle.

He is inspired to write a martial arts book during his recovery at the hospital and demonstrates its effectiveness in a martial arts ring, against the very man who paralyzed him in the first place. Some big shot producers see this and decide to put him in a bunch of action movies.

Too bad the darn imaginary demon just won't go away. In Bruce Lee's last vision, the demon abducts his firstborn son. Of course, Bruce flies into a rage and ends up choking the giant monster down with nunchucks. That's pretty much the end of the movie, and the last thing we see is a shot of Bruce Lee training a whole horde of martial arts students from his many, many opened schools. Great story, great action, and man, I like Lauren Holly.

1 out of 5 stars inaccuracy of the real Bruce.......2006-12-18

To me, it is dissappointing.. Perhaps I'm narrow minded.. but judging from what I know from the documentary DVD "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey"..

1. He didn't broke his back because somebody kicked him from the back, he had it because an overtrain.
2. This movie portray Bruce as someone easily seduced by women before he was married.. I don't believe such a deep philosopher like that would do something silly such as seduced by the woman in the restaurant the first time he to got to america.
3. In the match where a combat was offered to decide upon his rights to teach other non-chinese students, according to Bruce Lee's wife LInda Lee.. she watched that match..

I think this movie is just like the case with Jet Li's fearless. People need to tell accurate stories, because this can be used as guide by youngsters and elders in order to pursue a better life.

Let people know what is the true story of Bruce Lee.

Director Randal Kleiser is so noted for featherweight fare like The Blue Lagoon and Grease that when It's My Party hit theaters in 1996, critics clapped while filmgoers turned fickle. But it's a potent and tear-jerking film if only because of the personal weight it bears. As Kleiser revealed in interviews at the time of the film's release, the event that made him sit down and write the film "was so powerful it became a turning point in my life," and this film is a fictionalized, heartfelt depiction of that event.

It's My Party is about Nick (Eric Roberts) a young gay man whose AIDS symptoms become life threatening. He decides to toss a final party before he ends his life and invites his friends and family to this most special of special occasions. But then the ex-love of his life--a Kleiser-like film director (Gregory Harrison) who bailed on him after he was diagnosed with AIDS--arrives.

Kleiser called in favors from his friends and they all worked for scale. He said he "never worked on a set that was so supportive." The result is a movie about AIDS that merits a second look not only because it is empathic and loving, but because it's also defined by Kleiser's honesty and self-critical desire for redemption. --Paula Nechak

Description

Writer-director Randal Kleiser (Grease) creates "a genuine family feeling" (Roger Ebert) with this "brave, funny and heartbreaking" (Rex Reed, The New York Observer) film starring Margaret Cho, Academy Award(r) winner* Lee Grant, Gregory Harrison, Academy Award(r) winner** Marlee Matlin, Olivia Newton-John, Bronson Pinchot, Eric Roberts, George Segal and Roddy McDowall. Roberts gives a "touching, urgent performance" (San Francisco Chronicle) as Nick, a man whose three-year battle with AIDS is about to come to a close. Rather than face debilitation, he chooses to end his life but not before throwing the greatest farewell party of all time. As friends and family gather for a bittersweet celebration, something incredible happens. It's a two-daylong, uplifting, outrageous and life-affirming party that is ultimately Nick's everlasting legacy.

5 out of 5 stars Good-bye Nicky.......2007-03-18

This is the most sadness movie. That's ashame for Brandon being so afraid to be with Nick just because he found out he was HIV+ and Brandon freaked out and Nick had to leave because of Brandon. If I was Brandon I would still love Nick even if he is HIV+ or HIV- I would always be there for Nick. When they threw couple of days farewell party for Nick and Margaret went and found Brandon and forced him to go see Nick before Nick's death and Brandon showed up. All of Nick's friends and family doesnt like Brandon but they gave Brandon a chance to visit Nick because Nick wanted Brandon to be there too. In the end friends had to leave first so Nick should have to have a family-together as what Nick's mother wanted. When friends said good-bye then I started to feel so deep and it made me feel so apart and watering in my eyes. When they had family-together and Brandon started to realized that he still love Nick. Nick took the pills and then he was sitting on the chair talking about the pictures from the photo album and then he dead in peace. This made me feel so sorry for Nick's family and his family cried like hell. I am SO fond of Marlee Matlin because I am also deaf and I know sign language. The reason I loved this movie because this movie is gay and Marlee Matlin was playing in this movie and I am HIV+ for a year now as well!!

5 out of 5 stars Death with Dignity........2007-01-24

This a great move in which Eric Roberts dares to flex his acting muscle as a Gay male dying on his own terms with a wonderful party. We all should be able to face a terminal illness this way. The cast are all great, and fill their roles great. You could almost believe the thing was based on a real dying man. I have a soft spot for Eric Roberts. He is underrated talent. If you are ready to admit funerals are for the living, and death is dealt with in different ways get the video. I wish I'd been invited to the party. This could help other facing a terminal illness to live whatever life they have left in style, and on his/her own terms.

5 out of 5 stars Saying Goodbye.......2007-01-16

"IT'S MY PARTY"

Saying Goodbye

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

People react strangely when I tell them that "It's My Party" is one of my favorite movies. It's sad, it's depressing but it is powerful and it is about a period that I have lived through." It's My Party" is about the last day in the life of a young California designer, Nick, who is suffering from an AIDS related brain tumor. He decides to end his own life but only after throwing one final party for his family and for the ones who love him. As the party gets underway and he prepares to get ready to take his own life, his former lover appears in the hopes of an eleventh hour reconciliation.
The movie is based upon actual events and is powerful. The cast is a loaded one with familiar faces--Lee Grant as the mother, Gregory Harrison as the lover, Margaret Cho, Bronson Pichot, Nina Foch and Greg Louganis among others. Roddy McDowell makes a brief appearance and is the voice of conscience in which he questions the ethics of suicide. What an emotion packed drama this is! As the movie rolls along there are laughs and reminisces but as it begins its last 20 minutes, it grabs you by the throat and becomes heartbreaking sad. There is something that a god cry can do for someone. It cleanses you and makes you realize how good it is to be alive.
The script is tight and well written and the actors are fine and the message is deep. It is a true rendering 0of what many AIDS victims once faced. The idea that life could end in a horrible and lingering death was too much for many to accept. Many do not like to be reminded of that period in our history but it is an important time for us that we should never forget. Eric Roberts as Nick gives a dynamic performance as a man in the last hours of his life. Gregory Harrison as Brandon, Nick's lover is appropriately confused and compassion as the man who must deal with his own guilt for having walked out on his ill lover. Having to deal with the mortality of someone that you plan to share your life with is extremely difficult and Harrison manages to isolate that compassionate feeling even if he does so when it is already too late. Lee Grant as Nick's mom dazzles us with her performance and it is easy to understand why she has been so under appreciated for so many years.
Other notables in the film are Bruce Davison, George Segal and Olivia Newton-John along with the others already named form an incredible ensemble cast.
It is easily understood why a film like this is not appreciated. The morbid plot is bound to put people off but it is such an important film about the way we once lived that I think it should be required viewing. The catharsis it gives you will only make you feel better/

5 out of 5 stars A must see.......2007-01-12

Wonderful cast. Outstanding story. Lets us know how far we have come with the fight against AIDS. Bravo.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing story of Love and Loss.......2006-06-21

I found this movie to be amazing. You really connected with the characters. This is the type of movie that you either hate it or you love it. I for one loved it. The scene with Lee Grant screaming at the end is a tear jerker. I've seen this movie numberous times and still cry during that scene. I love the closeness he had with his friends and the distance he had with his father. It was very similar to my family and friends. If you like emotional movies, buy it. If your not into the sappy movies, don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story........2007-06-27

This is a great retelling of the traditional bible story without the usual religious preaching. A good tale of triumph over adversity, in a big way. Well known actors.

5 out of 5 stars Great telling of the biblical story of Joseph.......2007-06-13

I recently bought this on DVD after having watched my parents' VHS version over and over again throughout the years. I love this story. It is perhaps my favorite biblical story. The movie does such a great job showing the human side of these characters and allowing you to visualize the settings. The only gripe I have is that I really don't like Leslie Ann Warren, so her depiction of Potiphar's wife always annoys me. Other than that, the actors are extraordiary and the story is great!

5 out of 5 stars Joseph.......2007-05-14

This is one of my favorite Bible stories and this production is absolutely wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars A Forerunner.......2007-05-13

It's hard to believe Ted Turner had anything to do with this production. Certainly a credit to him. It's the best "Joseph" to date. A must see for the many Christians whose portrayal of God's man has not given credit to the true gospel. God's man was not "full of himself," nor did he ever think himself better than his brothers, although his character was much better than theirs. The Lord God had chosen the right man for the job...

5 out of 5 stars Bringing the Bible to life!!.......2007-05-05

This is by far my most favorite of the "Bible Collection" movies. It is done very well, and yes there are a few scenes that get a little steamy, the movie should be reviewed by parents before deciding to let the kids view it without being ready to hit the fast forward button.

As far as I can tell it is biblically accurate and really brings to life this great old story.

You will see and understand this story in a whole new light after viewing this masterpiece.

I have seen this film many many times and the ending still gets me wiping away the tears from my eyes.

This is truly a great movie and you will not be disappointed!

Amazon.com essential video

Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (author of the fanciful Ghost) made his directorial debut with this more serious confrontation with the realities of death. Michael Keaton plays an advertising executive who learns he is dying even as his wife (Nicole Kidman) is pregnant. The film beautifully focuses on his anger over everything: the unfinished business of his life and the probability he'll never meet his child. The late Dr. Haing S. Ngor (The Killing Fields) is terrific as a doctor who helps Keaton's character to recognize the corrosiveness of his rage and to let go. The film is a heartbreaker but truly cathartic for anyone who has felt the blunt pain of losing someone close. Keaton is outstanding. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movie.......2007-03-18

I just found this movie while hopping channels on my TV before going to bed. It was after 11 PM when I tuned into it; I got hooked shortly and stayed up until 1:30 AM or so to finish it, what with all the lengthy commercials on late night TV. I started after the opening scenes, so I couldn't even tell what the title of the movie was. I had to look it up on Google (keying in Nichole Kidman and Michael Keaton from the closing credits onscreen).
I was amazed with my reaction to this movie. I would be supportive if it was required watching for all people. I of course wept through the scenes of father & son reconciliation, the wonderful birth scenes with the hapless Dad almost passing out from amazement and joy, and the final glorious scenes in the end. I felt so much more in love with my life, my wife, my family, and my God, after watching this movie. That such a wonderful message got through the Hollywood process is amazing to me.
The movie depicts sickness and ultimately death, but it was not sad at all to my mind. Sad at first when "Bob" cannot seem to reconnect to his weird and wonderful family, and when you realize the miracle is NOT going to be survival of Bob's body but eventually becomes that of survival of his soul. Glad, while weeping profusely in the final scenes, at Bob's triumph over his fears and bitterness. How such uplifting themes can be portrayed without offending our various religious beliefs or lack thereof is wonderful.
I plan to make presents of this DVD to all my adult children. Some of the grandkids are old enough to appreciate it as well....

5 out of 5 stars One of Keaton's best........2006-08-09

I love movies. All kinds. But this particular film holds a special interest for me. When I first saw this movie, it was about 10 years after it was made. I had heard about the movie, heard that Michael Keaton's character dies of cancer. So I was a little reluctant to watch a movie about someone dying of cancer when I had just lost my father to the disease. The same exact form of cancer Michael Keaton's character is fighting in the movie. This particular form of cancer is not as common and highly uncurable, so naturally, I was a little surprised that this film depicted this type of cancer. But I have to say that the screenwriter for this film did his homework and did it well. The film does an excellent job of depicting the effects of kidney cancer and the path the disease takes.

I am confident that anyone who has dealt with the fight against cancer will relate to this film, and recommend it, as do I. Even if you have never had an experience with cancer, I would still recommend that you watch this film. It might give you some insight on the complications with cancer and the effects it has on family and the lives of those involved. Not matter how many times I see this movie, it gets to me every time. I highly recommend this film.

Jack Hill's 1975 drive-in opus, Switchblade Sisters, has all the requisite cheese and then some: girl fights, gun duels, sex-starved reform school guards, flashes of nudity, and even African-American-Maoist-revolutionary-butt-kicking chicks who don't take nonsense from anyone. The story is a prime example of how the influence of great filmmakers can be reprocessed into pure exploitation: Maggie (Joanne Nail), a smart, new member of a distaff gang, presents a threat to the group's established leader (Robbie Lee). The intricacies of their subsequent relationship--love, betrayal, and a battle for control--has numerous echoes of the films of Nicholas Ray and Howard Hawks, and Hill plays it all with a seriousness that underscores the heart within this trash classic. No wonder Quentin Tarantino became this film's latter-day benefactor, promoting its 1998 theatrical re-release under the auspices of his revival imprint, Rolling Thunder Pictures. --Tom Keogh

Description

Jack Hill's SWITCHBLADE SISTERS is the outlandish, action-packed story of a tough gang of teenage girls -- the all-female Dagger Debs -- who are looking for love and fighting for turf on the mean streets of the city! Bad girls to the core, these impossibly outrageous high school hoodlums go where they want ... and create mayhem wherever they go! A riotously entertaining mix of sex, jealousy, and massive firepower that critics loved -- don't miss your chance to see one of the wildest films ever made!

2 out of 5 stars BEWARE!.......2007-05-09

I don't know what these other reviewers are thinking but this movie is not the campy fun it leads one to believe it is...your better off with 'slime people' or 'faster pussycat' -stuff like that...I think Jack Hill was quite serious with this film through most of it. I don't recall laughing too much, it was kind of sad when her boyfriend was killed at the skate rink. Just a heads up for those of you looking for a stupid-silly low budget trash fest.

4 out of 5 stars you gotta love it.......2006-06-06

you really need to enjoy this genre to appreciate this movie. If you watch it with some popcorn and some good blacksploitation movies to follow, you will love it.

Great one liner quotes,and more.

the movie itself actually is really entertaining for its day and style.

5 out of 5 stars "Stop that fighting, girls.".......2006-02-08

It's 70s. It's camp. It's sexploitation, but to categorize "Switchblade Sisters" as just these three things simply doesn't do this film justice. I've had a copy of "Switchblade Sisters" on my unwatched film shelf for some time. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the reviewers here, I decided to take the plunge and give the film a go. I loved it!!

The Dagger Debs are an all-female gang led by the pixie-like, leather clad Lace (Robbie Lee). Lace's man is Dominic (Asher Brauner) the leader of the Silver Daggers. When new girl, Maggie (Joanne Nail) arrives on the gang's turf, she fights her way into the gang, and a short stint in the local jail bonds Maggie and Lace. As Lace says, "it ain't healthy to lone it," and Maggie soon becomes Lace's best friend and one of the more aggressive gang members.

Meanwhile another gang led by "capitalist gangster" Crabs (Chase Newhart) is about to muscle in on the Silver Daggers' action, and the stage is set for a major showdown. When the male gang members fail to match the aggression of their female counterparts, the Dagger Debs stop being just arm decorations and seize control.

A communist Mao-quoting, all-armed-all-girl gang, a corrupt principal called Mr. Weasel, a food fight, frumpy, boozy housewives, and a war between sadistic female wardens and female inmates using toilet plungers as weapons--yes, it's all here, and it's all marvelous entertainment. "Switchblade Sisters" had me hooked from the beginning to the very last brutal scene. The film has its extremely clever moments--in one scene, for example, a timid high school teacher tries to teach the gang members a lesson on the theory of "laissez-faire" government.

Most professional film critics pan this film, but Quentin Tarantino selected "Switchblade Sisters" as a serious, solid film from a much-slammed genre--and he's right. "Switchblade Sisters", from director Jack Hill is a wildly entertaining cult gem--and it really should not be missed--displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars Switchblade Sisters Transcends the Genre and Then Some.......2005-01-29

Forget all the condescending snobs who dismiss this movie as no more than memorable camp. Granted, this movie has plenty of camp, and it is memorable; but it has a lot more going for it as well. Jack Hill was one of those directors who could recognize the potential in the lowliest of genres, making great movies like "Coffy" and "Switchblade Sisters" and still delivering as much fun as the wildest B-movies could ever pack.

Roger Ebert started taking his vacation from cinematic reality when he panned this movie. (He cancelled the return trip back to reality, apparently, when he raved about "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," but that's another story). As the movie started getting under way, I was surprised and impressed that it had nothing to do with the "so-bad-it's-good" spectacle other reviewers were describing. This is a good movie and it is actually a lot less cheesy than other seventies action films like the preposterous "Marathon Man."

The plot is typical exploitation movie fare: teen gangs, radical militants, evil female prison guards, and lots of assorted weaponry. In other words, yes this movie contains a lot of camp. It also contains an inspired performance by Monica Gayle as the Iago-like Patch. While we're on this topic, I found her Patch a much more compelling performance then Kenneth Branagh's melodramatic, loudly whispering, offensive stereotype of a gay man that he tried to pass of as Iago in his version of "Othello," but I digress. Not all of the acting is equal to Gayle's, but it is better than what you will find in nine out of ten big-budget Hollywood productions.

In summary, if you despise anything but Bergman and Brakhage--"Switchblade Sisters" isn't for you. If you already made up your mind not to like the movie when you heard the title, it isn't for you either. More importantly, if you just don't like the subject matter of so-called "exploitation" films (including rape in this movie), you may want to pass even though "Switchblade Sisters" deals with the conventional topics in a thoughtful way. The label "exploitation cinema" hardly does justice to this move, but I realize the genre is not for everyone.

If you are looking for a good movie with fast action, moving drama, and a couple of memorable performances and some of the best quotes in cult-film history; and if you are not too high falutant for a healthy dose of camp mixed in with your drama and character studies, then see "Switchblade Sisters."

5 out of 5 stars "Everybody's Gotta Be In A Gang!".......2005-01-03

I saw this gem way back before Quentin Tarrantino rereleased it on Rolling Thunder Pictures, and I dug the hell out of it. Not trying to prove how old school I am with that, but it's odd how this film was universally reviled before, and now is considered a cult classic. It's still the same movie it was before Tarrantino put this DVD out. I just wanna make it known that this is one person who always liked it.

First of all, this is not meant to be a realistic portrayal of what life is like for girls in gangs, nor a cautionary tale of the future. It's meant to be trashy fun. Jack Hill actually did research about gang life before he made this movie, but then threw it all out, because he didn't think stark realism would work well with chicks in hot pants. It's set in the near future, or possibly an alternate present, but it is in no way meant to be taken seriously.

Believe it or not, Switchblade Sisters is a neo-futuristic retelling of Shakespeare's "Othello." And it is so much cooler than the Josh Hartnett vehicle, "O." The movie opens with a girl gang called The Dagger Debs, the counterparts to the male gang, The Silver Daggers. The Debs' leader, Lace, (the "Othello" character, for those of you paying attention) is brilliantly played with much gusto by Robbie Lee. Her boyfriend is the leader of the Silver Daggers, Dominic.

The Daggers and their Debs are chillin' in a fast food joint when they notice a blond babe who won't leave "their" table. They hassle her, but to their surprise, she impressively defends herself. Her name is Maggie, and after they do a little jail time together, she and Lace forge a fast friendship.

Lace isn't the only one Maggie has impressed, however. Lace's boyfriend Dom is after her. Maggie admits that she has feelings for Dom, but would never betray Lace. This is just enough for Patch (aka Yago) to use to manipulate Lace into believing that Maggie is her enemy.

One great scene is when Maggie must prove her loyalty to the Dagger Debs by retreiving the medallion worn by Crabs, the leader of the rival gang. It's hilarious to see her manipulating him by playing the bad stereotype of a ditzy woman in order to hide her intelligence and skill. "Um...I'm trying to get into the Dagger Debs? And I'm supposed to deliver a message. I don't know what it means!" And of course this girl comes right out and tells the creepy looking Crabs that she's from a rival gang, and yet he believes that she wants to fool around with him, rather than steal his medallion! I'm not knocking that as an unbelievable plot point, cuz we all know that's how it is with guys like him.

From a feminist perspective, it's hard to overlook the rape scene between Maggie and Dominic. First of all, I've seen lots of exploitation movies, and lots of rape scenes that were far more offensive than this. Many of these rape scenes are shot so that the audience becomes voyeur, and the woman is exhibited for the audience in the same way she is exhibited for her attackers. These rape scenes are meant to be titilating, but usually leave me feeling disgusted, and guilty for watching women being exploited. But in this scene, Maggie is not being exposed, and most of what happens is in the dark, or on the other side of her door. What we see is not excessive, but it also doesn't look censored. And at the end of it, I'm feeling pissed off, but for the right reasons.

It may seem offensive, or just strange, that after this happens, Maggie is still on speaking terms with Dom. But the point of this is not to say that what Dom did was acceptable. He's a gigantic pig, and not good enough for either Lace or Maggie. Yet, any time he does anything to reveal what a low life he actually is, both girls turn a blind, codependent eye, and convince themselves that it isn't really his fault. Of course this is wrong, but it's the tragic flaw that tears their otherwise loyal friendship apart.

We can see it's gotten too far when Lace conspires with a rival gang to have Maggie killed. Luckily, it backfires, and our heroine lives to see another day, but with disasterous consequences. "I had to do it! He was treating me like a little gutter cat!" At this point, Lace actually believes that Maggie's presence is causing Dom to be a jerk, rather than Dom himself.

There are some real zingers in here as far as dialog is concerned, and many of them are punctuated with the actors' enthusiastic delivery, particularly in the case of Robbie Lee as Lace. However, one of the most notoriously bad lines, "If you leave, it's all gonna turn out bad!" sounds ok to me. Lace is pleading with Dom to stay with her, and in a moment of scattered desperation, it sounds like something a girl her age would really say. Lace really believes she can't be happy without Dom. I guess it got such a big laugh from audiences because the rest of the dialog ("My old man, God rest his ass!" or "Hey, Crippledick, everyone knows your crank could hook a tuna!") is so wild and unexpected that this line sounds silly by comparison.

Another one of my favorite scenes is when Maggie decides that the Dagger Debs will no longer be defined only by their male counterparts ("We're nobody's Debs anymore!") and decides to change the gang name to The Jezebels.

I wasn't too fond of the audio commentary track with Jack Hill, the director, and Quentin Tarrantino, the Guy Who Really Likes This Movie. I was hoping Tarrantino would be interviewing Hill, and encouraging him to say more about his experience making the movie. Hill is very soft spoken, and unfortunately, Tarrantino keeps interrupting him throughout. I want to hear about Jack Hill's experience making the movie, not a bunch of stuff Tarrantino once read about it, or worse, what his famous friends thought about the movie when he showed it to them.

I've seen a lot of exploitation movies that claim to be all about female empowerment by having a female lead. But this film is one shining example of feminist exploitation cinema. I don't know if such a term exists, but if it doesn't it should be created just for this classic. I never thought I'd say this, but I agree 100% with Tarrantino when he says, "You start out laughing at this movie, but about halfway through you realize that you actually care about these people." If he can do that with trashy exploitation, Jack Hill is one of the most underappreciated directors of our time.

Bruce Lee died after shooting only a few scenes of his ambitious Game of Death, but that didn't stop greedy producers from finishing and releasing "Lee's last film," even if he's doubled for most of it. Lee planned an ambitious expression of his fighting philosophy, and his story culminates in the rigorous challenge of the "Game of Death," in which combatants take on successively greater and greater masters as they fight their way to the top of a tower. Only a few fight scenes were completed, and the released film is about a martial arts movie star who takes on a syndicate of drug dealers. Lee faces down the towering Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in an impressive battle, one of the only surviving scenes from Lee's original shoot, while outtakes from his battle with Chuck Norris in Return of the Dragon are used along with real-life footage from Lee's funeral. The rest of the film is a mishmash of car chases and clumsily edited fights, complete with awkward inserts of Lee's face. His double remains hidden behind a pair of dark glasses or a motorcycle helmet throughout, and he abruptly changes into a yellow jumpsuit for no reason other than to match Lee's costume in the final scene. --Sean Axmaker

1 out of 5 stars Game Of Boring.......2007-05-17

This is the Martial-Arts version of "Plan Nine From Outer Space" only not near as funny. When he died, Lee had only shot part of what he hoped would be a masterpiece of Martial Arts movies. Stuck with little film and no clue what to do with it, the producers hired a kindergarten class to write a script, hired a man who looks NOTHING REPEAT NOTHING like Lee and cut the fights that were filmed and got this cinematic version of goulash.nothing about this movies is good(except for the brief time Lee is on the screen) and to add insult to injury in some scenes they actual use a cut out picture of Lee superimposed over the doubles face. Just lousy!

2 out of 5 stars it is a double bruce lee ! the fans were in uproar.......2006-11-29

Before Bruce Lee died he worked on scripts for Game of Death (also known under some titles as "song of the knife")...and shot some 40 odd minutes of footage including test screenings and actual fight sequences.

The idea of the film was to make a multi-layer, philosophical film made for the chinese and eastern audience to ask the question over martial arts style - the advantages and disadvantages of each style, as well as questioning the need for style anyway.

The film's main plot was to be based in Korea. Bruce Lee would be forced into storming a 4 or 5 storey Pagoda which is said to hold a infinite treasure with each level guarded by a different style.

The bottom floor would be held by hundreds of Karate students (much like the ending of Enter the Dragon), the first layer would be a style under the handle of "Gate of Enlightment".

The Second layer would be the Preying Mantis with elements of Wing Chun.

The Third layer would be a Philophino style whilst the Fourth, the Temple of Gold would be held by a Hapikdo expert (though I'm not sure about this).

The Fourth layer would be the Temple of the Unknown, guarded by one Kareem Abdul Jabbar - doing an unknown style.

Whilst shooting, most of the footage was lost to the ravages of time. And when Bruce Lee died, his fans cried out for any footage to be shown as a mark of respect.

The end footage of Bruce Lee fighting Jabbar and previous footage would be cut to bits by Robert Clouse and put into a new film under the same name. The end film is offensive and shatters the whole idea of the original GOD plot and story - but then again there wasn't enough info on the film to start with.

Bruce Lee fans were in uproar...the film was a shambles, yet was commerically succesful. Most of the film had no Bruce Lee in it, or had lookalikes or even worse used Stock Footage of old Bruce Lee films and interspliced it into the film.

The DVD, whilst is good, doesn't do much to help the film - there isn't enough info on the script notes...why is there so much text, why didn't they try to recreate the scenes, the floors or even re-do the film as new?

You'd be better off not to buy either the DVD or video version unless you want to waste money or actually are a die-hard bruce lee fan.

1 out of 5 stars Rip-off of Bruce Lee's unfinished work.......2006-11-11

This is a hodgepodge of film being passed off as a Bruce Lee movie. Bruce Lee died before finishing this movie, and has less than 20 minutes of actual footage of him. The plot of the movie does not even correspond with Bruce Lee's original intentions. The parts that actually show Bruce Lee are heavily edited.

If you want to see the intended parts of the movie that were filmed before Bruce Lee's death, rent "Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey." While that is still not a complete movie, it explains his philosophy, not just flashy fight scenes.

This movie is a waste of money, time, and space.

2 out of 5 stars Game i death.......2006-06-12

I liked the movie until he had is horrible death the qualidy was not to good but the movie was ok

2 out of 5 stars Mediocrity.......2006-05-06

I love Bruce Lee movies. However, when I got "Game of death", I knew that it was fake since Bruce Lee died before finishing this movie. The film was completed about six years after Lee's death. However, for the memory of Bruce Lee, I decided to watch it anyway.

Bruce Lee plays as Billy Lo who is being blackmailed by some mafia gangsters. Naturally, Billy refuses to cooperate and that makes him a target for elimination by the gangsters. Since Bruce Lee died during the making of the movie, most of the film is played by Tai Chung Kim, who performed reasonably well. To disguise the fake Bruce Lee, he can be seen wearing sunglasses, fake beards and bandages. I, however, enjoyed the fights, although they are not up to the standard of Bruce Lee.

Of course, the parts that Bruce Lee really appeared were first class. An example is when he has to fight Kareem Abdul-Jabber. Unfortunately, Bruce Lee only appears for only about 11 minutes or so.

The movie could have been made better if the plot was sensible. So my recommendation is to rent the movie and not to buy it: it is not worth buying.

Movie was what I expected but it should have been in color but my copy showed in b&w and transfer was of poor quality.

5 out of 5 stars Great performance of Jayne in a Terence Young movie !.......2006-06-03

For years i was trying to get to see this film.
When I finally found it last year,i was pleasantly surprised.
Jayne offers a serious performance that i found very credible.Even her voice is lower in it's tone, and the numbers when she sings give us an idea of what her Las Vegas shows must have been like(she was the highest paid performer,at 35,000 $ a week !).God knows that Jayne was not offered many serious roles in her film career, but i would say that this one qualifies as a serious one.
The film is directed by Terence Young, and even if the production values are done with a small budget,it is well-paced,with a real story giving us a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes of a stripper in the late 50's.
The serious side of Jayne's performance made me think about her last movie,'Single Room Furnished',which made me sad.
Conclusion:Don't dismiss this film as a 'Bomb' or El-cheapo trashy film,it is not.
Trivia (found of Jayne's site):One of the reason why the film was shot in black and white, had to do with how revealing one of Jayne's costume was(the one you see on the cover)

3 out of 5 stars Worth a dollar.......2007-04-14

This film has been released by Digiview, the company which supplies all the $1.00 DVDs sold at Walmart. The source print for their transfer was in good condition and the color is equally good. Although, the print or transfer is slightly soft it is not distracting.

This is superior to many other titles available for $1.00 and is good entertainment for the entire family, especially young children, as there are songs sung by children.

It is both good and bad that you can buy this for one dollar. Obviously, it is great for the consumer but it just shows how fast the retail price has declined for DVDs and in turn that makes the business increasingly difficult for producers and distributors. Of course at a retail price of $1.00 it eliminates piracy, so you will not find less expensive versions from China or Korea.

3 out of 5 stars Daniel may be a "Trail Blazer", the movie was not........2004-03-17

The technical part of this review refers to the Brentwood Home Video or BCI Eclipse version.

Republic Pictures was nearing the end of its career releasing B pictures mostly westerns, crime stories and those Bowery Boys pics when this one came around. Released in a process called TruColor, the films colors haven't aged well (at least in this transfer). But it doesn't detract that much from this fast moving story starring Bruce Bennett (Herman Brix, I gotta research and find out why he changed his name) as the namesake of the picture and Lon Chaney, Jr. as the Indian chief whom Daniel must eventually make peace with.

It's a story filled with fights, morality, romance and even song from country crooner Faron Young. Released in 1956, I'm sure to capitalize on the Davy Crockett craze at the time, this low budget story of building the new frontier is fine for the family with some mild violence and at 76 minutes is perfect viewing for a rainy day.

Brentwood/BCI put in their usual extras, six chapter stops, a DVD dictionary, trivia game and a short subject (Hal Roach's "Little Rascals"). This movie is also in a 10 pack of westerns at about triple the price for this one film from Brentwood Home Video called "The Wild West" and is available from Amazon.com.

3 out of 5 stars Good "B-Movie" Frontier Adventure from the 1950s.......2001-08-20

No, this isn't the old Fess Parker television series, but rather a fairly standard frontier adventure programmer from Republic Pictures that was made in the mid-1950s. There's a reasonable amount of action, drama, and even some song, as Daniel Boone and his followers attempt to make a new life for themselves in the wilderness at Boonesboro.

There are no "name" stars here, save minor ex-Tarzan Bruce Bennett (former Olympic shot-putter Herman Brix), Lon Chaney, Jr., and country music star Faron Young, who does get a chance to belt one out. Bennett was in his mid 40s when he made this film and, indeed, looks the part of a father with grown children. The performances of the actors reflect the film's "B-movie" status . . . capable enough for the material, though I find the perpetually grinning Freddy Fernandez (portraying Boone's son Israel) to be annoying. In the middle of the climatic battle, there's Fernandez grinning away like an idiot (I wonder what ever happened to him?). All in all, though, this is a fairly watchable film that's helped by its short running time (approximately 75 minutes).

I have mixed feelings about this DVD transfer. I'm sure at the time of its initial release, "Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer" was probably a very good looking film. However, the print that Brentwood Communications has used has washed out colors and is "soft" looking, but the audio is fine. This is the type of film that probably could only be released on DVD through an independent budget video company; it's highly unlikely that any major studio would release this film on DVD. So, in that repect, viewers looking for older, hard-to-find films on DVD should probably be thankful to the independent video companies for searching out and releasing films like "Daniel Boone, Trail Blazer."

3 out of 5 stars Dan'l Boone........2001-06-19

Well-made and entertaining Indian tale from the 50's with former Tarzan Bruce Bennett as Daniel Boone and country singer Faron Young. A good Lon Chaney,Jr. as the Indian chief. But - alas - the Technical quality is very poor! Colors are bad in this edition. Try to find another one!
