Description
An inept Czech peasant is torn between greed and guilt when the Nazi-backed bosses of his town appoint him "Aryan controller" of an old Jewish widow's button shop. Humor and tragedy fuse in this scathing exploration of one cowardly man's complicity in the horrors of a totalitarian regime. Made near the height of Soviet oppression in Czechoslovakia, The Shop on Main Street features intense editing and camera work which won it the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Film in 1965.
Customer Reviews:
The Shop on Main Street.......2007-07-02
A deserving winner of the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1965, "Shop" is a haunting tale of the holocaust. Directed by Jan Kadar and Elmar Klos with simplicity and restraint, the heart-rending story unfolds gradually, with a pitch-perfect rendering of the two central characters (by Kroner and Kaminska) keeping us glued to the screen. An unforgettable testament to the horrific ravages of the Second War.
Interesting subject matter that takes a long time to build up any steam!.......2007-06-12
I have always been extremely interested in films about the WW2 Holocaust from the perspective of the different countries that were so effected by this tragedy. THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET is a very unusual tale that comes to us from Czechoslovakia. Produced in 1965 and filmed in black-and-white, this is the story of Tony who has been given "ARYAN" charge of Jewess Mrs. Lautmann's Button Shop on Main Street during the fascist takeover in 1942.Mrs. Lautmann, at 78, has bad hearing and no comprehension of the terror that is befalling all of the Jews in the town. Tony is trapped trying to protect her and at the same time save his own skin. The film really plods for the first 90 minutes, and truly only reaches some level of steam in the last half hour. The "soundtrack" (if that is what it should be called) is nothing more than occasional violin scratch that is very reminiscent of arthouse work of the '60's. The acting by the two principles is unquestionably top drawer, but the film is not at all a pleasant two-hour+ view.
Other Czech films about the Holocaust would be ALL MY LOVED ONES and DARK BLUE WORLD.
give people something for nothing and they will join your -ISM IE NAZISM , SOCIALISM, COMMUNISM.......2007-01-28
This movie will really make you think! A great funny and tragic story. Most people want something for nothing and if they can get it from their neighbors in the guise of Nazism, Communism, Socialism without having to 'earn' it, they will jump at it. They sell their souls. The peasant it seems to me saw that his wife was everything she accused the Jew of being and the wife wanted the husband to act like the very Jews that they were denouncing and expelling. A very interesting concept!
Loved it!
Worth Waiting For.......2006-01-29
I had heard of "The Shop on Main Street" years ago but never had the chance to see it until tonight. I even bought and read the book by Ladislaw Grosman 17 years ago in anticipation of seeing the movie some day. I must admit that the book was impressive but not THAT impressive and so I worried that the movie might be anticlimatical. It wasn't. The book was a long short story, a novella, if you will. It laid out the story clearly enough but it was the movie that brought all of the characters to life and created the gradual development of the impending crisis. By the time we reached that crisis we had met a few jerks and unimpressive characters. However, we had also come to know and appreciate a number of people that we found endearing for different reasons. As events darken the scene, we suspect something bad is about to happen. I knew what it was going to be but it still had an impact for me.
The two main characters in "The Shop on Main Street" are an elderly Jewish woman, played outstandingly by Ida Kaminska, and a neer-do-well Slovakian carpenter, played impressively by Josef Kraner. The way these two come to interact with each other and the ebb and flo of their relationship is the heart of the movie. The picture gives a personal look at the Final Solution as it is played out in a small Czech village. The emotions that the director brings out on film is where the movie soars above the book.
Watching "The Shop on Main Street" is a moving experience. It challenges us and leaves us wondering where we would have fit into this cast of characters. In doing so, we may come to have a slightly better understanding of the incomprehensible. That oxymoron is worth the two hours spent watching "The Shop on Main Street". The raw emotions on display will stay with you long after.
How conscience affects behavior and responsibility.......2005-10-30
Set in a Czech village during the Nazi occupation, a poor fix-it man is appointed "Aryan comptroller" of a button shop owned by an old, almost deaf Jewess. At first the man figures to take advantage of her for his own gain, but she doesn't understand his position and thinks of him as her "assisstant." They become fond of each other, and when the Jews are eventually rounded up for deportation, he tries to protect her.
It's not easy for him, however, because he knows if caught he'll be killed: it's quite a tug-of-war with his conscience - and very realistic. To the movie's great credit there is no sentimental heroics displayed here - in fact, he's ready to turn her in to save his own neck. (It's the same moral dilemma Huck goes through on the raft involving Jim.) In a fracas with her he accidentally kills her. Broken in every way, he soon hangs himself.
The ending is the movie's only flaw, only because it's too drawn out, with a surrealistic dream sequence included in which he assumes the role of her husband, both dressed in old costume. But up to that it's a great picture, very moving and poignant; the woman (played by Ida Kaminska) is simply fantastic.

Description
One of the first post-World War II films to deal with the Holocaust, BORDER STREET recreates the circumstances surrounding the doomed Warsaw Ghetto uprising, in which a small, heroic band of Jews chose to resist the Nazis rather than face deportation to Auschwitz or Treblinka. The story unfolds through the eyes of four characters who live in the same building: David and Jadzia are two Jewish youths who fight the Nazis as their only choice for survival, while gentiles Bronek and Wladek consider the occupation an insult to their Polish heritage. Aleksander Ford's heart-wrenching film focuses on the common goals of the Poles and Jews as they stage a valiant effort to rid themselves of the Nazi menace. BORDER STREET is at once a compelling drama and a page out of history.

Shows the lives of several people from just before the war to the failed Warsaw Ghetto uprising.......2006-07-10
"Border Street," a film about the Second World War, was produced in 1949 just a few years after the war finished. With the war being so current, it wasn't surprising to me that the movie avoided portraying anything controversial, such as the Russian takeover after the war. It stuck to some safe ideas, such as the Germans being the invaders, the Jews persecution, and the Poles sometimes helping the Jews, but not always being nice to them as well. "Border Street" (or "Ulica Graniczna" in Polish) shows the lives of several people from just before the war to the failed Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
One feature that distinguished this film from others about the war was that it gives attention to the viewpoint of children. In fact, the story revolves around the lives of several children, with some attention given to their parents. Both Polish and Jewish children are the heroes of the movie. They all grow mature and learn together with the fast instructor of hardship and war.
All in all, one underlining image throughout the film was that the Jews were persecuted, brave, and had a sense of duty to be with their own people, even if it meant their own doom. Although the film may be on the side of male dominance, such as when the father goes to war he tells his young son that he is now the man of the house and has to provide for the family, it was progressive in its view of females. One of the Jewish children is a spunky girl, who gave a black eye to the kid with the German roots before the start of the war.
Aleksander Ford, who is best known for his 1960 film "Krzyzacy" and is credited for helping establish Poland's international cinema reputation, directed "Border Street." The movie shows us some of the hard times the people of Poland went through and this film itself may even be a part of its healing process. Sit back and get read for an old war movie that may be sad at times, but also offers us some moments of hope.

not the best michael worth film.......2007-06-19
Though he doesn't have a big list of martial art movies, what Michael Worth stars in I usually thoroughly enjoy. Films such as "To Be The Best", "Final Impact" and "Fists of Iron" have had a large amount of martial arts action, good B-movie production quality, good supporting characters, and decent storylines. Street Crimes provides all these elements once again, just toned down to less than I was expecting.
Street Crimes reminds me of "To Be The Best", "Final Impact" and "Deadly Bet" alot from the very beginning. The same produces (Joseph Meri and Richard Pepin) along with score composer (John Gonzalez) use about the same style of directing and music, which is pleasant for a B movie in my opinion. Michael Worth's character is too similar to that in his other movies in terms of acting, but he still does a fine job. The supporting cast is rather enjoyable, and the villain is one big bad dude named "Gerardo" played by James T. Morris. Unfortunately we don't get to see him too much until the end.
The story is good and somewhat uplifting, with a good moral center about a rookie cop (Michael Worth) who hates guns and decides to set up a fight ring in an old youth center for the town's drug dealers and violent gang members to use instead of killing each other. One of the leaders, Jimmy (Ron Yuan - To Be The Best, Ring of Fire, Deadly Target), challenges Tony (Michael Worth) to a fight. Afterwards he joins Tony's cause until the leading dealer in the neighboorhood decides to put an end to it.
I expected more fight action then there was. In most Micahel Worth films, there is enough fight action to fill 2 normal martial arts movies, but Street Crimes has maybe 5 fights, none too long and overly exciting, though a few are done well. The final fight, no less, is the best, between Tony and Gerardo outside the youth center at night. It is only a 2-1/2 minute fight scene. It is obvious Gerardo is a boxer, but his huge size and spinning punch combos are the highlight of the fight.
Street Crimes is a good movie and should provide enjoyable entertainment, but its nothing to get too excited over. A strong average B action movie, but if you are looking to be wowed by lots of fight action, check out Fists of Iron, To Be The Best, or Final Impact - all starring Michael Worth.

I like Michael Worth although he can be annoying with his long kiaaa! sounds like as if he is trying to be a try hard Van Damme. I like my B-Grade martial arts movies and this one will be in the middle of my shelf collection due to the storyline and fight scenes are good. Michael is a rookie cop and is teamed up with a veteran cop who is old enough to be his father. After attempting an arrest on a gangleader, the leader of the gang (Ron Winston Yuan) challenges Mike to a fight at an old broken down youth centre which Mike of course accepts. After defeating the gangleader both decide to help the community by re-opening the centre and if cops and crims have a certain dislike to each other on the street or anywhere else they can sort it out in the ring. The villian is a major drug dealer who doesnt like to see his community being cleaned up and well, ill leave the rest of the plot up to you to find out what will happen next.
