The story centers on a Japanese prison camp isolated deep in the jungles of Southeast Asia, where the remorseless Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) has been charged with building a vitally important railway bridge. His clash of wills with a British prisoner, the charismatic Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), escalates into a duel of honor, Nicholson defying his captor's demands to win concessions for his troops. How the two officers reach a compromise, and Nicholson becomes obsessed with building that bridge, provides the story's thematic spine; the parallel movement of a team of commandos dispatched to stop the project, led by a British major (Jack Hawkins) and guided by an American escapee (William Holden), supplies the story's suspense and forward momentum.

Shot on location in Sri Lanka, Kwai moves with a careful, even deliberate pace that survivors of latter-day, high-concept blockbusters might find lulling--Lean doesn't pander to attention deficit disorders with an explosion every 15 minutes. Instead, he guides us toward the intersection of the two plots, accruing remarkable character details through extraordinary performances. Hayakawa's cruel camp commander is gradually revealed as a victim of his own sense of honor, Holden's callow opportunist proves heroic without softening his nihilistic edge, and Guinness (who won a Best Actor Oscar, one of the production's seven wins) disappears as only he can into Nicholson's brittle, duty-driven, delusional psychosis. His final glimpse of self-knowledge remains an astonishing moment--story, character, and image coalescing with explosive impact.

Like Lean's Lawrence of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai has been beautifully restored and released in a highly recommended widescreen version that preserves its original aspect ratio. --Sam Sutherland

Best Film Ever, Test Of Wills & Character........2007-05-06

This unique film had everything you could want except romance. Action, suspense, special effects, an intruiging story, themes, cinematography, diection, & locales. This is the story of a Japanese POW camp in Burma in World War two. Commanded by Colonel Saito {Sessue Hayakawa}, the mainly British captives are being used as slave labor for the construction of a railroad bridge that will link malaysia to Rangoon over the river Kwai. The Japanese commander's life depends on it's successful completion. Colonel Nicholson the British commander is a stickler for rules & when Saito declares that officers will work as well as enlisted men, he sites the Geneva Convention restrictions on officers doing manual labor. When they refuse to work, Saito has them thrown into ovens, metal containers that bake in the tropical sweltering heat. After much angst Saito relents since the bridge is behind schedule. There's a fine mix of camera shots from all possible angles showing the grinding heat draining the overworked & malnurished men, as well as breathtaking panoramas. Above all positives of this excellent film were the performances by all concerned. Alec Guinness as Col. nicholson was beyond "PERFECTION." He totally absorbs the characters essence & then manifests it. I can't think of any actor who deserved his/her OSCAR more. William Holden is also superlative in his scenes, as were stern Sessue Hayakawa & the enigmatic Jack Hawkins. The destruction of the bridge & train was a one shot chance done very well. I saw this film on TV as a young boy. Now seeing it again on DVD, it was as enthralling as ever. Buy it, you won't be disapointed.

This enduring classic is (loosely, very loosely) the story of the WW2 POWs used to build the Thai/Burma railroad. The larger war becomes a personal battle between 3 forces: The Japanese soldiers looking for labor led by Colonel Saito, the British soldiers looking to serve as prisoners as dictated by the Geneva Convention led by Colonel Nicholsen (Alec Guiness winning an academy award) and the commandos looking to destroy the bridge led by Naval officer Shear.

The morality (or more specifically madness) of war is adressed in the movie. The pointless nature of armed conflict reads true today, as do issues of handling prisoners. The movie's a long one, but one of the few that justifies the added time. Every piece is indeed required in this classic.

How Amazon could rate this as a benchmark is beyond my understanding. This movie is so far removed from the reality of the episode that it is an insult to the troops who endured the events. Perhaps it would be best if Amazon relied on combat veterans to critique war movies.

Tour de Force for William Holden.......2007-02-27

This is movie is an excellent WWII prisoner of war film. I was enamored immediately and for the entire length of this film. William Holden is perfect as an American POW caught in the middle between a mission dreamed up by his British companions and desire to sit the war out. Director David Lean is the master.

Kudo's to the Weinstein Company for releasing this Kung Fu classic on DVD.The audio and video restoration that went into this DVD release is absolutely incredible and Martial Arts fans won't be disappointed."King Boxer" is presented in it's Widescreen format and enhanced for 16x9 television's.The films colors are incredibly sharp and vibrant and the mono sound is clear and crisp.The video transfer of "King Boxer" is the absolute best version I have ever seen and fans of the Kung Fu genre will be amazed by the quality of this release.Sound options include original Mandarin and English dubbed version and choice of subtitles.The special features are an added bonus,specially the Trailer Gallery.This movie has it all,non-stop action,fierce fighting and plenty of blood.Watch the magnificent Lo Lieh as he masters the Iron Fist technique and exacts his revenge."King Boxer" is five star entertainment at it's very best!!

A classic finally gets its due.......2007-06-19

King Boxer (aka Five Fingers of Death) came out in 1973 and is a classic example of a Shaw Brothers kung fu film - a genre they helped pioneer and perfect with this movie being one of the finest efforts from this time period. It also has the distinction of being the first kung fu film to be released in the United States, just ahead of Bruce Lee's equally influential Enter the Dragon. In the 1980s, it inspired filmmaker John Carpenter to make Big Trouble in Little China and more recently was a huge influence on Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies.

The filmmakers maintain just the right level of pacing with very short lulls between action sequences. Let's face it - we're not watching King Boxer for its thoughtful characterization. That is not to say that this film is not well made or doesn't take itself seriously because it does, but it is hardly Shakespeare either. Director Cheng Chang Ho employs sudden zoom in and outs and even the occasional freeze frame during many of the film's dynamic fight scenes. This is a beautifully shot movie with expert use of the 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio with superb compositions of every frame. The use of shadows for dramatic effect in one scene, and a brief fight that takes place at sunset that looks like something right out of 1950s Technicolor era, is part of the reason why this film is so revered among kung fu film fans.

King Boxer features betrayal, torture, revenge and even some heroic style redemption thrown in for good measure - all heightened to melodramatic levels making for a very entertaining ride. Our hero has to deal with a devastating injury and his own self-doubts before he can face the bad guys and use the Iron Palm technique to save the day. You soon find yourself rooting for Chi-Hao to win the competition and the cute woman he loves as well. Even though our hero triumphs at the end, it is a terrible cost with friends, family and his mentor dead or horribly maimed all because of a petty rivalry between two martial arts schools.

There is an audio commentary by filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and film critics Elvis Mitchell and David Chute. Love or hate Tarantino, the guy knows his film history, displaying an impressive encyclopedic knowledge of kung fu cinema. For example, he not only talks about how it was the first kung fu film released in America but then rattles off 5-6 other films that came after. This is a very entertaining, information-packed track by three guys who are fans of the film and display a genuine love for the genre. Highly recommended.

"Interview with Chang-Hwa Jeong." He talks about how he got involved with the film. Initially, he found the script to be "common" and studied Chinese history and literature in order to make improvements. He talks about some of the techniques he used to make the action sequences so exciting and visceral.

"Interview with action director Lau Kar Wing." Kar Wing was the kung fu director on the movie and speaks about how he approached the many fight scenes, including the challenge of matching the actor with their stunt double seamlessly.

"Interview with film critic/scholars David Chute and Andy Klein." Chute gives the film a historical context in terms of American cinema including its shocking level of violence at the time. They point out that the soundtrack was a pastiche of music ripped off of other film and that this would often hamper its distribution because of rights issues.

Also included are two trailers and alternate opening sequence that features very crude opening credits.

Finally, there is a "Stills Gallery" with poster and promotional photographs.

I LIKE IT SO MUCH I BOUGHT MORE TITLES THAT HAVE THIS ACTRESS ASIA ARGENTO IN THEM. THIS STORY IS VERY BELIEVEABLE, VERY " IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU." IF YOURE THINKING ABOUT IT...DO IT. Brings back memories.......2005-12-02

Watching this movie brought something of a bittersweet smile to my face as i was in a crazy on-and-off relationship with a woman just like Asia Argento's "Beatrice" character.

The performances and the soundtrack are top-notch and though the pacing of the film is a bit slow in spots, it's not too much of a detriment to the film and even serves the tension between the leads. the film is, at heart, a romance after all and it'd be a shame if they had rushed things.

If you want to see a neat little portrait of love both on and over the proverbial razor's edge, do yourself a favor and check this movie out

Love Story Secondary.......2005-09-10

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is certainly a love story, but for me this is only important in that love is one of the things most of us look for in life. The deeper search, and this is where Asia'a character starts out, is for a life that is not "frayed at the edges," perhaps another way of saying "whole." What plays out is two people, driven in part, for certain, by their passion for each other, but even more for their passion for authenticity, who deepen themselve, each other and an amazing relationship through that search. It is the insistence of each of these people to fully honor themselves, individually, that causes them to succeed both in their personal quest and in love. It is they way they ultimately honor each other. This is a deep life lesson that is not learned by many, which, perhaps, is why so many reviewers miss it.

What they learn is that when they find themselves, "They Can't take that away from me," as the music that accompanies the credits at the end says.

A fantastic flic. Good music, color, cinematography, acting, editing and other things, too.

A magnetic Asia Argento--heists and true love...........2005-07-21

The right person can help you overcome your self-destructiveness. That's pretty much the moral of this oddly endearing love story/crime story.

The principal character--very strongly and naturally played by a not-at-all-inhibited Asia Argento (ie, lots of nudity). I was very impressed by the other main character, Jared Harris, an actor I had only seen previously as Andy Warhol (I Shot Andy Warhol). He's terrific. His voice is fabulous (something in common with dad, the late great Richard H.) He's a good guy, the clean-cut teacher who cares about his students, law-abiding, gentle, jazz-loving. She's the thief with a soft heart, looking for a reason to leave that life, looking for "family" (her childhood was not chipper). She's got an ersatz family (a dysfunctional one) with Rupert Everett (as a charming, drug-addled thief) and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (as a pretty-boy, screwed up emotionally thief). They care about each other, but are also violent and volatile with each other.

The teacher gets pizzazz in his life from Beatrice (B Monkey); B. gets stability from him. But the dark elements of her character and her dangerous associates intrude into their lovey-dovey life, and they have to make tough decisions about how to continue together. It's very moving when Harris' character asks Beatrice, "If if was just you and me, and nothing else, would that be enough?" Ultimately, isn't that what true love may come down to? Is being with that person, like Adam and Eve, just the two of you, enough? Can you give up the thrills of a dangerous life and settle down and be happy?

The ending, violent and an ultimate test of loyalty and love, is explosive and appropriate given what came before. It's a satisfying, if gruesome conclusion to an askew love story.

I've never seen Miss Argento before, and I agree with the other reviewers that she is genuinely charismatic.

Hidden treasure.......2005-01-06

Why, oh why doesn't Hollywood make movies with this much heart and atmosphere?

This movie (i caught it 1st on cable) is so luscious, the performances so brilliant and believable that i was mesmerized. Asia Argento is amazing. She deserves to be a big star. This movie works on so many levels, the love story, the gritty underground scenes, it all fits together. And the music is wonderful, Portishead, Portishead, Portishead (and Barry White briefly) along with some wonderful old jazz.

A sterling collection of several excellent British WW II films.......2005-10-18

Over the years I have with effort to see a large number of British films and had seen four of the five films in this collection. In all four cases, however, the print I saw was vastly inferior to the superb prints contained in this fascinating set of films. So far I've seen three sets of DVDs from Ealing: one featuring the films of Alec Guinness, another containing several non-Guinness comedies, and this collection of war films. I hope that they don't stop with these. Although the sets are remarkable for the utter and complete absence of extras (and by none I truly do mean none), the prints themselves have in ever instance been impeccable. A bit about each film.

THE DAM BUSTERS--Of all the films in the set, this is the one that is most widely available. I first saw this as a small kid when in my most passionate warmonger phase. It is based on an actual bombing raid in WW II where a technique for attacking dams was developed by a British scientist. By dropping bombs so that they would skip across water like stones across the surface of a pond, they were able to attack targets surrounded by water that were normally protected by torpedo nets. Michael Redgrave anchors an excellent cast of performers who will largely be unknown to American audiences, though Basil Sydney appears in both this film and in WENT THE DAY WELL?, while a very young Robert Shaw can be seen in several scenes. If one is very attentive one will spot a very young Patrick McGoohan in a small role as a guard.

THE CRUEL SEA--Far and away the best film of the bunch, and one of the very best films about the Battle of the North Atlantic, this brings home the story of escort work against the German U-Boats better than any other film. The movie tells the story of the Compass Rose, a destroyer employed in protecting cargo ships during the early part of WW II. The cast is outstanding, anchored by a powerful performance by Jack Hawkins, a superb actor not as well known in the US as he deserves to be, though his role in THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI guarantees that he will not ever be forgotten (he is the only one of the major stars who ends the film alive) and also by his memorable role as an alcoholic missionary in ZULU. Speaking of ZULU, the star of that film, Stanley Baker, has a memorable supporting role here as the overly intense first officer in the first third of the film. Many of the other performers will be more familiar by face than by name, the best known by far being a very young and startling handsome Denholm Elliott. The film has many marvelous moments as well as two haunting scenes: the first where Hawkins has to attack a German U-Boat that is submerged below a group of British sailors in the water awaiting rescue, but instead find the destroyer dropping depth charges directly below them, guaranteeing their deaths. Equally disturbing is the sound of the men over the communication tubes after the Compass Rose has been struck by a torpedo. One could add the ensuing scene as well, the British sailors who crowd onto the two rafts following the sinking of the ship, only a few managing to survive the night. All in all, this is a powerful, disturbing film driven by a string of strong performances.

THE COLDITZ STORY--John Mills stars in this excellent film about prisoners of war intent on escaping from an interment camp in Colditz Castle. Directed by Guy Hamilton, of James Bond fame, the film tells the story of British, Polish, and French soldiers who gradually learn to coordinate their efforts in escaping from the camp. There are a score of fine performances in this one, led by Mills and Eric Portman as leaders of the British officers, and backed by memorable performances by the likes of Ian Carmichael, Lionel Jeffries, and Bryan Forbes. Film and folk music fans will also recognize Theodore Bikel as one of the Polish officers.

THE SHIP THAT DIED OF SHAME--I saw this one many years ago in an inferior print. It is an unusual film, almost a gothic ghost story. It stars George Baker and Richard Attenborough as two former officers of a WW II wooden patrol boat. I'm not certain what they were called in Britain, but in the US they were called PT boats, though unlike the famous PT-109 this ship is fitted with deck guns instead of torpedo tubes. The ship distinguishes itself in wartime, but after the war is put into mothballs until after the war, when the two officers buy it to use it for smuggling. With the help of the boat's former coxswain, they engage in petty smuggling for a long while, but eventually get involved in more serious crime. At this point the boat starts mysteriously breaking down or steering hard when doing something deeply wrong. In the end, the boat seemingly commits suicide rather than continue being used in criminal activities. This is certainly not a great film, but it does manage to be a very interesting one.

WENT THE DAY WELL?--This was the one film I had not seen before and it is the only one actually made during WW II. It was definitely made as a morale booster and tells the fictional story of a German invasion by a company of English-speaking troops of a small English village as a prelude to an invasion of Britain by German forces at large. It is a fairly improbable film, in that even if Hitler had been able to assemble that many soldiers who could pass for English, it would be highly unlikely that they would have been squandered so readily. Nonetheless, the film is entertaining and avoids most of the sentimentality and hollow patriotism one might expect in such an effort. The cast is strong, with the normally heroic Leslie Banks playing a German plant in the village. If it isn't in the end especially convincing, it nonetheless features a likable ensemble cast.

One thing all of these films have in common, and something typical of most of the Ealing Studios films, is marvelous scores. Many of Britain's finest orchestral composers wrote for the cinema and scores and the playing are almost always incomparable.

These films may not have the macho heroism associated with American films, but I find these much more focused on the actual human experience. They truly are must-see films both for fans of British cinema and for any WW II buffs.

Britain At War........2005-08-08

As someone who was born in Britain and spent his childhood there in the fifties, I remember being taken by my parents to see several of these films when they were released, particularly "The Dam Busters" and "The Colditz Story". So I do appreciate this collection of British World War II films by Anchor Bay, and the memories that came flooding back.

All five films are a crisp black and white, full-screen, mono sound, but--apart from a nice booklet--the DVDs have no extras. As of this writing, Richard (now Lord)Attenborough, Sir Donald Sinden and Richard Todd are still "with us", so their comments would have been fascinating. Some extras--comments on these films and the British war film genre in general--would have been a "nice touch", to say the least.

"The Cruel Sea"--quite simply one of the finest and most realistic films about naval warfare ever made. As the captain of a corvette assigned to protect supply convoys from German U-boats, Jack Hawkins gives one of his best performances--you will not forget the scene where he must decide the fate of some stranded sailors--this is real war, where good people must make heart-breaking decisions. Mr. Hawkins receives fine support from Donald Sinden and Denholm Elliott. A real classic.

"The Dam Busters"--that superb actor, Michael Redgrave, stars as British scientist/engineer/inventor Barnes Wallis, who fought an uphill battle with the British military (and far too much "red tape")with his innovative plan to destroy dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley, and cripple Hitler's industry. After various setbacks, he proves that his "bouncing" bomb does indeed work. That's when Richard Todd as Wing Commander Guy Gibson and his squadron of Lancaster bombers become involved, with much intensive training, and ultimately one of the most dangerous missions of the war. "The Dam Busters" is another true classic--and a treat for aviation fans.

"The Colditz Story"--John Mills, Eric Portman, Bryan Forbes and a number of other fine British actors portray prisoners in Germany's infamous Colditz Castle. Their captors tell them that escape is impossible ! Oh really ? John Mills and his compatriots beg to differ ! This film isn't quite a classic, but the performances and situations will still demand your attention--and, again, the film is based a real events.

"The Ship That Died of Shame"--the titular vessel is a small, well-armed speed boat that served with distinction during the war. It is "saved" from mothballs after the war by its old crew, played by Richard Attenborough, George Baker and Bill Owen. However, Mr. Attenborough's intentions for the boat are totally dishonourable--he sees big money in smuggling, and drags his old mates (Messrs. Baker and Owen)into this lucrative, but high-risk business. As time goes by, the "business" becomes even nastier, with the main characters turning on one another and bringing "shame" to their once-proud ship. The film is a fascinating exercise in the study of human greed and immorality.

"Went the Day Well"--here is the "sleeper" in this collection. I had never seen this one--what a movie ! This film has consistent suspense, worthy of Alfred Hitchcock ! It was released in 1943, when the war with Germany was still raging, and there are various scenes and situations which I suppose can be considered propaganda--an attempt to boost the spirits of the British public and remind them how evil the Nazis were (as if this was necessary after the Blitz !). A small English village is visited by British troops on "manouvers"--except they aren't British at all ! They are Nazis who have sneaked into Britain to establish a "beach-head" for a large-scale German invasion. They threaten the villagers with death, and are only too pleased to demonstrate that they mean business ! Even children are threatened (of course, after the war, with the discovery of the concentration camps, nothing in this film can be considered an "exaggeration" ). Leslie Banks stars, with a very nice turn by David Farrar as a particularly reprehensible Nazi. "Went the Day Well" is not the most famous title in this collection--but it just might be the most unforgettable !

Britain produced a lot of World War II films in the fifties. Many of them had a very authentic look and feel about them. This was likely because many of the people involved had experienced "the real thing", with memories and details still fresh in their minds.

I would certainly welcome another collection--"Above Us the Waves"--"The Sea Shall Not Have Them"--"Cockleshell Heroes"--"The Wooden Horse"--"The One That Got Away"--"Reach for the Sky"--"Carve Her Name With Pride"--"The Battle of the River Plate"--"Yangtze Incident"--"Ill Met by Moonlight"--there are many titles that come to mind.

Bottom line--this is a fine collection of movies that show, from a number of viewpoints, how bravely and competently British people coped with the war, and an evil enemy. Rule Britannia indeed !

I have seen all Wesley Snipes films but this film was a load of rubbish, I would have thought his acting skills was above this but he looked like a second rate actor

"7 Seconds" Starts Promisingly, Then Runs out of Gas Soon.......2007-04-02

The latest heist by a professional thief and his team goes terribly awry, and the organizer of the flawless plans gets more than what he bargained for. Agents and mobsters chase him, but he keeps cool under pressure, frustrates other party's plans and can always extricate himself from the mire. This is a standard story format for action film. It looks clichéd and predictable, but it works well with good rhythm in action and sure-handed guidance from the director. But "7 Seconds" doesn't have them.

Wesley Snipes plays the thief named Jack. Jack's failed robbery in Bucharest, Rumania, lands him in a fresh trouble because his girlfriend/partner-in-crime is kidnapped during the shoot-outs. He takes hostage a NATO military cop (Tamzin Outhwaite sporting her British accent) after the mayhem (and saving her life too), and engages in urban car chase with familiar settings. The story doesn't make much sense (why steal the money of casinos in Rumania?), but the earlier part of "7 Seconds" is fun with decent car stunts and a little bit of humor. The actions are confusing, and you don't know where these wildly running cars are going, but at least the stunts themselves are not bad.

Then in the film's middle section tedium settles in, which stops the actions and starts to introduce superfluous characters, plus an unnecessary plot twist or two. We don't need to see Wesley Snipes walking in the station and putting a brief case in the coin locker there. Or actually we don't care what the briefcase really contains at all; and we don't even want to know whether something in it (whatever it is) is real or not. We want thrill and action, or funny dialogues. Except for some brief martial arts stunts and mildly amusing banter between Snipes and Outhwaite, "7 Seconds" doesn't have much to show, particularly in its second part, where the film has another car stunt sequence involving street cars, but it is marred by choppy editing.

We often hear complaint or criticism about direct-to-video films, but actually some of them are pretty good, offering diverting 90 minutes like the films of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. Unfortunately, for all the fairly good acting from the stars, Wesley Snipes' "7 Seconds" is not one of them.

Wesley still has a kick or two left in him!!!.......2007-01-04

I've been a big fan of Wesley Snipes for the last fifteen years, since his film, Passenger 57. When I saw Wesley in that movie, using his martial arts skills for the first time, I thought to myself that this guy fights just like the late Bruce Lee. After that I followed every action movie that he did just so I could watch him do his martial arts. Of course, his "Blade" trilogy series is perhaps the most memorable of all the films that he's done. The role of Blade fits Wesley like a tight glove, plus it gives him the opportunity to really go all out with his martial arts. Since 2004 and Blade: Trinity, Wesley has opted to do films based in Europe. Why? I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with the money that the IRS claims he owes in back taxes. Whatever the reason for this decision, it certainly has affected the quality of his films. In fact, they've pretty much gone down hill in a similar vein as those done by Steven Seagal. The only redeeming quality of Wesley's European movies is that he still does his own martial arts and can still kick ass in a big way.

In 7 Seconds, Wesley Snipes plays Jack Tolliver, who used to be with Delta Force. Due to a physical confrontation with his commander after a number of his men are killed, Tolliver ends up spending four years in prison. When he gets out, Tolliver decides to use his unique skills in the Romanian criminal underworld and plans a special heist down to the last second that will net he and his gang twenty million dollars. Everything goes perfectly, until the very end when his operation is betrayed from the inside so that the Russian gangsters can get their hands on an authentic Van Gogh painting, worth over sixty-five million dollars. Almost all of Tolliver's crew is murdered. Though his girlfriend is taken hostage, he manages to escape with a metal case that has the painting in it. Tolliver, however, doesn't know what's in the mysterious case. He inadvertently runs into Sergeant Kelly Anders (played by Tamzin Outhwaite), who's with the Military Police at the nearby NATO Air Force Base, while he's being chased by the police and the Russian mafia. He keeps her from being shot and then uses her car to elude the people that are after him. As the movie progresses, Tolliver will find himself alone and forced to turn to Anders for help, who now has her own problems to deal with. Together, they will take on the Russian mafia and try to rescue Tolliver's girlfriend.

I honestly didn't think that the movie made a lot of sense. I got confused at the beginning of the film when the heist of the casino money and the three armored trucks supposedly takes place. I wasn't following what was happening, and it looked like someone had screwed up with the planning and the intelligence on how the doors to the trucks were to be opened. Then, after Kelly Anders is basically kidnapped and her car wrecked, the Romanian police accuse her of being Tolliver's accomplice. Even her own people seem to have their doubts as to her innocence. That just didn't ring true to me. We also have the owner of the Van Gogh painting and the head of the Russian mafia (he has Parkinson's Disease and shakes all of the time) who seem to want the painting back for insurance purposes. When the Russians have Tolliver at their mercy and torture him and his girlfriend to find out where the painting is at, they forget to check his pockets for the key to the locker at the Bus Terminal, or is it the Plane Terminal, and then they allow him to take them to the locker. How stupid can you be? Cut off some fingers and some toes. He'll talk. Whatever you do, don't let him loose, or else he'll come back and kill you. The two car chases in the movie were so-so. It's difficult to make the cars appear as if they're going fast when they're small and running on four cylinders. The highlight of the movie is getting to watch Wesley Snipes do his martial arts. He's probably the best film fighter in the movies today. I'm always impressed with his hands and kicks, and the way he uses his knees and elbows to block and attack. That's really the only reason to watch an action thriller with Snipes in it, unless it's one of the "Blade" movies. Though 7 Seconds isn't the worse movie I've seen during the past year, it still could've been a lot better. The script could've been better, the acting, the stunts, the photography, and the directing. This is why the movie went straight to video here in the States. Come on, Wesley, we need another "Blade" movie before you get too old to do them!

Disapointing Action Movie.......2006-06-09

I really like Wesley Snipes and I really like action movies. This movie disappointed on both accounts. I had to wonder what Snipes was thinking in doing this film. I still think he is a great actor and could draw people into theaters, so why do a straight-to-video movie. Truthfully I didn't even read the cover before renting it because it was Wesley Snipes but even if I did I would have still rented it.

The movie starts out ok with a really ingenious armored car heist, which of course goes bad and turns into a pretty neat car chase. After that, the movie seems to fizzle out.

There is not much dialogue and I think the writers put more effort into the heist than the rest of the film. The acting is pretty bad all around, although I think Snipes did what he could with what he as given.

The directing is frazzled and just plain weird. I didn't like it much at all. I think the director was trying to add action to the film by his style of directing but to me it just made things worse.

Given the right attention, this movie could have been great but I get the feeling everyone just wanted to get it released as soon as they could. It has potential, but in my opinion, everyone involved in it just fell flat.

I had trouble getting through the whole thing. If you are a die hard Snipes fan then you might want to rent it, but I don't give any guarantees as to whether you will like it or not. It just might be worth renting simply to see the beginning because the heist is definitely one of the most intelligent and ingenious I have ever seen.

Don't expect much and marvel at the heist and you just might not feel like you've wasted your time watching it. Only buy it if you are an avid fan who must have a copy of every movie your favorite actor has made regardless of how good they are.

Not What I Excepted.......2006-02-25

While I watched this movie, it came to mind that it was not like the other Wesley Snipes movies. I know they can't all be alike, understand now, it was not a bad movie just wasn't what I excepted from him.

Prodigal Boxer-this is a decent Meng Fei movie where he is playing Fong Sai Yuk. He really shows he is a great actor but sadly the kung fu is only average at best in this.

Militant Eagle-this movie is the better of the 2 but it really doesn't make any sense. It has one hell of a final battle sequence but you will stuggle watching it until the end finally comes.

The thing I don't get is why these 2 movies are being released again. I know at least a few companies that have put these movies out before. I just don't get the point of this. And the fact that Militant Eagle has NEVER had an uncut release, I just don't get the point of releasing these movies, again. Hopefully a company like Rarescope will come out with the original version of Militant Eagle some day. It would be nice because they could show companies like Warner Brothers what a kung fu movie release should be like, ya freakin idiots.

First off, picture quality is fine, widescreened, not all the way, but about 1000 times better than a pan and scan job. The picture quality is average, faded, btu no real prblems like distortion and only all teh fight scenes look excellent. Both movies quality looks the same.

GOOSE BOXER-4/5-Now this one took me by surprise casue I have only seen a couple reviews for it and people seem to hate it, especially compared to the other movie on this disc. But it is a TIGHTLY choreographed movie that has some of the better cantonese comedy that I can rememeber in a kung fu movie. it starts with a local butcher(charles heung) and gets the comedy started right off the bat. After a couple minutes he needs to beat down some thugs and we get to see his goose style. I wasn't expecting much, but man can this guy fight. Charles Heung didn't have a big acting career or nothing but has been an exexcutive producer on huge productions like johny to's "Throwdown", tsiu hark's "legend of zu warriors", jet li's "black mask" and "contact killer", and even a "a chinese ghost story". He has been THE producer on this, "goose boxer", "dr. wai", and the "god of gamblers" movies. I would compare him to derek yee, except he's not a director. Great fighter though, and a GREAT actor. He is so perfect for this role. The comedy is some of the best I have seen. Nto woo ping type stuff but way better than that. If you don't watch close, you won't see it, but for a movie that is only 78 minutes, it is really hard not to find those 10-15 WONDERFUL moments. And the fights are absolutely off the chain. Reason for that: Tommy Lee is the DIRECTOR!!!!!!!!! Hoi san lee is the bad guy. Holy ship!!!!!! I have never seen him in a better performance. Most people who don't know these movies will shrug that comment off, but this guy has fought like a hundred different people on screen. Quick bio-----Shaw brothers star who was of course contracted but EVERYONE sought this guy out cause not only was he a really good screen fighter, he knew how to not hurt people. Unlike some guys(Hwang Jang Lee, benny the jet, etc).He is the senior monk that sort of opposes san te in 36th chamber, and also had a fight with gordon in shaolin vs. wudang, and baddie in bad movies like descendent of wing chin and my 12 kung fu kicks. he always looks good, but he shines through everybody save phillip ko in this.

So the butcher gets talked into becoming a martial arts instrucotr for a school who sorely needs him. Well after phillip ko's brother is murderd, Ko he does some investigative work. Next Lee hoi-sang shows up to the goose boxer's school and kidnaps him. And that certainly got the Wtf award for this movie. And with a midget and then goose and sex kung fu styles, it is a tough award to get. So we find out that he is kidnapped cause... You have to go find out. But I will tell you that phillip ko has 2 SPECTACULAR FIGHTS. And like I said, the great lee Hoi sang is brilliant with his crane style. For a big, scary man, he pulls if off good. And when I say big, just check out his neck, eek. Ending gets a little silly but with tommy lee at the helm, 2 of the best screen fighters in the genre, a new young star who cetainly could have been huge if that was what he wanted, a couple of good comic relief characters, and a midget. And you get one of the best of the genre. Also, movie seems to be cut on a few scenes, so if abybody know of a an uncut version, please let me know.

TIGER OVER WALL-what the heck that title means, I still can't figure it out. I have to say that this is easily one of the best directing jobs I have ever seen in a kung fu movie. If the story could match the great dialogue and acting, this would EASILY get a 5, and I would be able to confidently rate the disc a 5. Unfortunately the story is about a foreigner's dog being stolen. And the police are being pressured by the "foreigners" to get somebody to take the fall. Yeah, I need a story better than that. But like I said, the director does an AMAZIGN job. He is the director from GREAT movies like "Secret service of the Imperial Court", "Bastard Swordsman", and the return, "hellz windstaff", and 3 evil masters. His name is Chun-Ku Lo, a.k.a.- Tommy Loo. You will certainly notice an obvious difference in tone with most of his movies. Discounting hell'z windstaff, that wasn't a psychologically thrilling movie or nothing:) One of the corrupt cops is a famous shaw brothers star who fights gordon second one to last to johnny wang in return to the 36th chamber. The fights take a LONG time to get started, but man when they do you will wish that you were paying more attention. Phillip Ko gets pretty pissed after all of his people are getting taken down by the cops. And they don't just throw them in jail they take old or retarded guys who are just susceptible to say a corrutp police official who needs to get results. Lee tso-nan(director of great movies like "shaolin vs. lama", "phantom kung fu", and "challenge of death") plays a caring doctor character who is also the master of Ko's school and has to keep signign things fo rthe ploice to say that like prisoners are being treated good and some other things. Of course by the end he changes and stands up for himself. He is just a great director who is a really good actor also. So a very well told if not a good story keeps you interested until the fights happen. Ko fights the guy who I always mix up with lo lieh(please post his name, cuase I know someone knows it). Ko's bro then goes at with the other cop, I think he is like a decective, but still a bad guy all the way. This is actually my favorite fight of the movie, well maybe the final fight beats it out. And action was choreographed by tak tseung??. I didn't get the first name but those are the 2 that follow it. When the end credits role it says wong chen-li was assistant martial arts director. All in all, one of the better final fights I have ever sen. Not the greatest pole fight. If
you have heard of but have never sene Hwang Jang Lee, then this is a PERFECT MOVIE TO GET STARTED WITH. His kicks are on full display. I would have liked multiple opponents for his patented triple kicks, but he does good enough on one person:)

Buy this one!!.......2002-09-22

I bought the Goose Boxer/Tiger over Wall DVD because it was...and in the store. I was amazed to discover how great these two movies are (especially for the price)!! Goose Boxer is more of a comedy but it has many superb crane style fights. Tiger Over Wall, though, is definately the better of the two! The plot, though seeming flaccid at first, takes unexpected turns and the characters are well crafted to believability making the movie as a whole more and more intriguing. Every fight is amazing and paced well through out the movie so that the action and storyline do not overwhelm each other. The final fight between Lee and Koa is absolutely mesmerizing! Lee plays such an awesome villian you WANT to see him get his ... kicked, but he's too damn good to get beat down easily, making the fight that much more intense!
This is one of the best old school kung fu flicks I've seen in a while! The fact that I've heard so little of it before is a shame! Go out of your way to see this one if you have to.

Phillip Ko is at it again.......2001-12-07

"Tiger over wall" is one of the most underrated Kung-fu movies of its' era Phillip Ko is the star of this flik and man he gets down using Mantis fist, tiger and eventually Eagles claw he gets into many fights thoughout this movie and if you are a fan of Ko's screen work you will not be disapointed after "Dragon on fire" AKA "The Dragon the hero" this is his best as the lead player. Huang jang lee (Silver Fox) is awesome as well. The fight at the end is one of the best hand to fist combat scenes I have ever witnessed. Take a look tell me what you think.
