Freeway is one of those movies that has the power to simultaneously amaze and disgust just about anyone who dares to view it. Like Seven, Kalifornia, and Natural Born Killers, it's a movie that could be called a product of our times, since it caters to our societal fascination with serial killers and outrageous psychopathic behavior. But make no mistake: director Matthew Bright isn't out to feed anyone's sickest impulse. This is a scathing satire in the age of Jerry Springer fistfights and "real" TV shows like Cops, in which the "I-5 Killer" (Kiefer Sutherland) meets a wayward teenager (Reese Witherspoon) on the freeway that provides his nickname. She confides in the man but soon discovers his gruesome intentions, and ... well, let's just say she effectively defends herself, only to find later that the killer (whose wife is played by Brooke Shields, no less!) has used the media to his advantage. Fine performances make this a provocative thriller, but it's definitely not for the innocent or squeamish. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reese is an amazing actress............2007-06-27

I don't look for deep meaning in movies, as a rule, but I have to say that Freeway made me think beyond its entertainment value. This film makes you realize how horrible some children in this world are treated with evil and heartache in their own homes - by their own parents. Reese Witherspoon's portrayal of Vanessa is realistic and totally believable. You walk away being mad at her for being so vicious, but you can't blame her one bit because of her miserable life. I can't believe Reese Witherspoon was never recognized for this performance. Kiefer Sutherland is also fantastic. Parts of this film are disturbing, but you'll sit there thinking "man, Reese is amazing..."

3 out of 5 stars The Dark Side of Little Red Riding Hood.......2007-06-27

A skewed take on "Little Red Riding Hood", this film is a (very) dark comedy. It's loaded with violence but not sex (awww) and, on its surface, seems to be little more than The B Movie That Could. The difference is that it's all a sort of joke. The kind where the writer/director is giving a wink to the audience that "gets it" and a middle finger to those that don't. I'll admit I fell somewhere in between. I watched the movie cold, meaning I had no idea what it was about but I picked up on the "Riding Hood" theme instantly and that kept me watching the entire movie just to see how they handled the major beats of the fairy tail.

Freeway doesn't adhere to Riding Hood in any strict sense and the deviations are much to the advantage of the production. This is one of Witherspoon's earliest roles and she carries the entire film, successfully, upon her shoulders. I never imagined her as a tough chick but she makes you believe she is...I guess that's why it's called (que John Lovitz) ACTING!

3 out of 5 stars New disc is NOT 16x9 enhanced, it's the same disc content as the old DVD.......2007-06-19

I own the old DVD released years ago by Republic Pictures, which was not 16x9 enhanced. Thus, if you own a newer Widescreen TV it will appear stretched and distorted.

Seeing this new DVD released by Lions Gate, you are led to believe that it is a new 16x9 enhanced transfer, which it even states very clearly on the back cover of this new DVD edition as "16x9 WIDESCREEN".

When I popped in the new DVD, imagine my surprise when I saw that it was in fact not 16x9 enhanced, but it is the SAME EXACT DISC CONTENT as the old Republic Pictures DVD release, right down to the generic menu!

Thanks for nothing Lions Gate...

4 out of 5 stars WAY ABOVE AVERAGE THRILLER! HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR AND A BRAIN!.......2007-05-07

This is a quirky story with an excellent cast. There are a few surprises along the way throught this very different and interesting take on "Little Red Riding Hood". Off the wall and funny at times, this is one crazy little thriller!

4 out of 5 stars A Twisted Path To Grandma's House.......2007-04-29

Anybody expecting the nice Reese Witherspoon of "Legally Blonde" and "Walk the Line" be forwarned. This film is definitely not for those with squeamish sensibilities and I'm not talking about the violence. "Freeway" is at once raunchy, rude, and over-the-top. The Red Riding Hood analogy is no surprise because there are fairy tale images flashed over the opening credits. The kicker here is what kind of skewed road Red is going to take to Grandma's house. The makers of "Freeway" careen all over the place and take many interesting directions to their intended destination. Reese Witherspoon should have been a star earlier than she was based on her work here. Despite her relative youth she is totally intuitive of what is expected of her here and she runs with it. Her performance is high octane in-your-face that just demands that you pay her mind. Or else. Kiefer Sutherland matches her in his wolf in sheeps clothing role. His evil nature is not telegraphed early and emerges at just the right moment to give the picture a jolt. For those adventurous souls who aren't easily offended "Freeway" is for you. My only objection is it's a little hard to take dark comedy that centers on abused children. The makers here are skating a real fine line there.

Fade to Black is a document of Jay-Z's self-proclaimed final concert; a grand affair that took place before a sold-out crowd at New York's Madison Square Garden in November 2003. (But anyone who follows celebrity news knows that Jay-Z was out of retirement and back performing at the Garden just a year later.) Fade to Black is a legitimately powerful record of a truly historic event in the annals of rap. Muttering offhand narration with typical bored, streetwise affect, Jay hails the concert as a momentous occasion for being the first time a hip-hop show was allowed to headline at the Garden.

It's unlikely that the full impact of the live performances will hit home to viewers unfamiliar with Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella Records stable of artists. Another frustration is trying to identify the array of visitors who trade raps on Jay's stage. Included in the star-studded lineup are Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Pharell, Ghostface Killah, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and R. Kelly. One unmistakable figure--and we do mean figure--is Jay's squeeze Beyonce, who raises the temperature and the roof with her skimpy outfit, flowing hair, soulful yowl, and sexed-up dance routine that leaves her boyfriend and the whole of Madison Square Garden slack-jawed with animal desire.

Twenty cameras captured the event, and some of the most powerful sequences are sweeping moves across the swirling, blissed-out masses as they lip sync along in perfect unison with Jay-Z's complex, profane, quick-witted raps. Less effective are intermittent cutaway segments that show the artist in various studio settings working up beats and rhymes. These amateurish home video breaks may give some insight to Jay's perfectionism and dedication to his craft, but they detract from the visceral power of the beautifully executed performance footage. --Ted Fry

Description

FADE TO BLACK takes a look at the rapper's career, providing a backstage glimpse during the concert and showing how his last album was conceived. Narrated by Jay-Z himself, the film features notable guest performances by Beyonce, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, Pharrell Williams, Foxy Brown and appearances by P. Diddy and 2004 Grammy-winner Kanye West.

5 out of 5 stars My Inspiration.......2007-06-05

This film shows Sean Carter is the most positive light. I see a man with a strong work ethic and so much drive. He's hungry for success and he never settles for anything. He always aims higher. I think I enjoyed the studio footage more than the actually concert footage. Much love goes out to Jay Z and his production crew!

5 out of 5 stars An Authentic Peek.......2007-05-29

I recently began seeking out hip-hop documentaries after watching Jin's No Sleep Till Shanghai. I was pretty skeptical though as to how much a superstar like Jay-Z would be willing to show. It's actually a much more insightful doc than I expected, in terms of understanding the music process. I was surprised how much, and sometimes how little, effort goes into making an album, especially for an artist of Jay's stature. Of course, Fade to Black can also be enjoyed simply for its concert footage, which makes this an excellent film overall.

4 out of 5 stars It is what it is...........2007-05-14

What more can I say?... It's Hova baby.... The concert footage is hot... The studio footage showing the many producers he worked with in creating the Black Album was hotter... Only one reason for falling short of five stars... It wasn't long enough...

5 out of 5 stars "The Last Waltz" of Hip-Hop.......2007-01-08

Jay is one of the few hip-hop artists who can not only fill the seats at the Garden, but play to an audience that large as well. There are tons of guest appearances here and they are universally strong. Even potentially mismatched performances such as Beyonce's appearance work extremely well. The behind the scenes footage of Jay in the studio is riveting. He has a soft, almost hoarse speaking voice yet a powerful voice on the microphone. Like his contemporary Biggie Smalls, he listens to beats with a frighteningly focused intensity and then writes and records all from memory. Some scenes, like when Jay visits Rick Rubin and spits an entirely new verse to the Public Enemy classic "Welcome To The Terrordome" are alone worth the price of admission.

The picture quality of this DVD transfer is decent, though not stunning. Saturation is pushed a little high and the transfer can appear a bit soft at times. The audio track is a well executed surround mix that really captures the acoustics of the Garden. Audio and video sync appears to be quite good.

This is one of the great hip-hop DVDs. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jay-Z in My Lifetime.......2006-07-29

From begining till the ending rolls, Shawn Carter has done the wittest and most meticulous work to promote his The Black Album in 2003. Well maintained!

Three Gangsters vie for the control of Philadelphia

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Makes Superfly look like the Godfather .......2007-02-07

I don't know if this is a movie or a minstrel show.
I would say that it's two things Beanie Siegel and Dame Dash pride themselves on when making these retarded hood movies. One is "keeping it straight hood" another is sterotypes.

There's no need for me say what hasn't already been said about this movie because quite honestly, the horrible quality of this movie speaks for itself.

This isn't black cinema it's black death.

anyone with the intellect that's over 12 years old will let the "State" keep this "Property".

P.S. What's up with the horrible muti-shot scenes( a bunch of scenes in one shot) near the end of the movie where they are attempting to tie up the loose ends the story( if you wanna call it a story). I guess Damon Dash is the next Quentin Taratino(sarcasm).

3 out of 5 stars Orginal is better........2006-09-19

When I first heard that they were making a State Property 2, I was so excited. That is until I got it. This movie wasn't gangsta at all. As a matter of fact, it didn't even have a plot. Damon Dash's performance was horrible. He should stick to producing records. Even though the orignal is low-budget, is was way better than this movie. They should have got the guy who directed the first movie. This movie was straight garbage.

1 out of 5 stars damn.......2005-10-26

i dont know if it was intended to be a comedy or action, cause either way it came out wrong, poor acting and unrealistic events. if you luv the ROC. don't see this movie cause it was definately a mistake

4 out of 5 stars Its a Thug-shoot-em-up movie with a comedic twist........2005-07-24

Damon Dash returns to bring us "state property 2" a more light-hearted sequel than it's gritty original.

Beans(beanie sigel)after running from block to block and taking over most of philly in the original is now serving a 15 year sentence in prison and his crew back home in phily is messing up.Their getting robbed, busted by feds, drugdeals are going sour and they are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
when D-nice visits beans in prison and tells him whats going on,
Beans gets pissed and tells them no more "surprise parties"(watch the film and you know what i mean by that)but he really can't do anything because locked up.Untill he meets "El pollo Loco"(N.O.R.E) and he tells beans when he gets out of prison in one month he will give his crew work and work means that beans crew will be making money.BUT when El pollo and his partner in crime Biggs turn their back on beans and give beans's crew jobs that involve stealing from another crew(dame dash crew)a 3 way crew battle begins.

Now Unlike it's original movie which was dark, gritty, very street and thug, this sequel plays like a thug-comedy.
From The interactive words and designs flying on the screen, to funny lines from all 3 crew's members, to the violent humour(for Example Beans Imagining he's hitting Dame repeately with a shovel)TO El Pollo telling us how he has a diffrent chick to have sex with for everyday of the week and we are shown him in action with these chicks. It's light-hearted humor comedy and i commend Damon Dash for not just rehashing it's gangsta image from the original but for trying to be different and humorous.

The people you will see in this movie are
Beanie sigel, N.O.R.E, damon dash, camron, ol dirty bastard, kanye west, M.O.P, freeway, bernard hopkins, winky wright, oschino, omillio sparks, young gunz, loon, juelz santana, jimmy jones, and mariah carey.

I suggest you rent this movie and you will have a pretty good time watching it. It's a thug movie blended in as a comedy and if your a fan of "Roc-A-Fella" you will love it.

The Opinionated One has Spoken

5 out of 5 stars STATE PROPERTY 2.......2005-07-24

STATE PROPERTY-2 WAS A VERY GOOD MOVIE. BEANIE SIEGEL WAS ABSOLUTLEY GREAT,BUT DAMON DASH CAN'T ACT HIS WAY OUT OF A PAPER BAG. THE MOVIE KEPT YOU LAUGHING AND EVEN WONDERING WHAT BEANS WAS GOING TO DO NEXT. ANYTHING MOVIE THAT COMES OUT WITH BEANIE SIEGEL IN IT I WOULD BUY. THIS GUY IS A TRIP. I HAVE BOTH MOVIES AND WOULD NOT LEND THEM OUT TO ANYONE, THEY GOT TO GO AND GET THEIR OWN. GET THIS MOVIE, BELIEVE ME YOU WOULD NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.

Steve Martin wrote this film as a meditation on both love and Los Angeles (and then-wife Victoria Tennant). He plays a L.A. TV weatherman who finds himself conflicted about what to do with his life, both professionally and personally. As he works his way through a couple of relationships (including a very funny one with a frisky Sarah Jessica Parker, who talks him into colonic therapy), he discovers a L.A. freeway sign that gives him romantic advice. It helps him realize what he knows intuitively: that the British woman he is attracted to (Tennant) is the one he should pursue. A big cast (and lots of cameos) have fun with this witty (if slight) material and director Mick Jackson adds visual pizzazz. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pollo Del Mar.......2007-03-22

I became entranced by this movie the first time I saw it. My wife and I both love this film on so many levels it's hard to describe. I also have a slight personal connection to this film and Steve Martin. In 1990, during the Gulf War I was stationed at a small airbase in Bahrain when Steve performed as part of the USO tour. He was ghastly ill but still managed to go see the "Tree of Life" in the desert. You'll recall he refers to that during the movie. As an aside it really is amazing, a tree growing in the middle of a desert and has been for several hundred years; but I digress.

It's a cliché, but I think I notice something new every time I watch this movie. I have no idea how long it was before I noticed that the name of the hotel they stayed in was "Pollo Del Mar" or "Chicken of the Sea"!

This is the ultimate love story that even guys will like. Please watch it. You'll thank me.

5 out of 5 stars My True Favorite Film .......2007-02-15

Over the years I've had many discussions about film. I love masterpieces like Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Henry V, Richard III, Lawerance of Arabia, the Seven Samurai, Hiroshima Mon Amor, Bridge on the River Kwai, Gone with the Wind, Rope, Dances with Wolves, Braveheart, Pulp Fiction, Million Dollar Baby, Chaplin's Gold Rush, Horse Feathers, Lion in Winter, American Beauty, Schindler's List, Platoon, Unforgiven, El Mariachi, Godfather, Battleship Potemkin and Doctor Zhivago, but my true favorite film of all time is L.A. Story.

Every line, every scene, every shot and every concept is brilliant. It is not so much a great movie, as a collection of great scenes. But, on a level deeper than judgement, I simply love this movie.

The movie combines dry wit, absurdist situations, comic romance, urban fantasy and honest insights for a completely original film experience. It won no Academy Awards, nor is it likely to appear on any Film Institiute "All Time List," but even though I own four copies of this film (VHS, DVD, DVD 15th Anniversary Edition & iPod), if I come across it on cable I still have to watch. Watching this film has helped me get over setbacks and celebrate good times.

The best way I can explain the subtle brilliance of this movie is to paraphrase it. Let us assume that there is something I could say or do to make you watch this film. Now, let us assume that I have already done it.

5 out of 5 stars L.A. Story: Whimsical, Funny, and Pithy.......2007-02-12

L.A. cares about you. Revelations from a road sign, a Stationary Bike Park, long, sustained booming sounds, earthquakes and heartaches and Valdi's balls. A magical love story, a mystical muse, and a commentary about the contempory madness that is sorta LA, this is a movie you don't want to miss. Steve Martin at his best (and he wrote it!).

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-01-05

Big fan of most of the actors in this film: Steve Martin, Victoria Tennant (see also movie All Of Me) Richard E. Grant, Marilu Henner, plus lots of good cameos and a very young Sara Jessica Parker as SanDeE*
Like how the movie seems to both take the plot seriously and still poke fun at itself. Great music, lots of Enya. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Still a hoot!!!!.......2006-11-10

L.A.Story still packs a punch in its commentary on sex, romance, and a society focused on what you wear, who does your hair, and what could possibly be more important than how you take your coffee. Besides, the music is wonderful!

Description

A hip, darkly comic, on-the-road tale about a young woman who has an unfortunate encounter with a figurative big, bad wolf while hitching a ride to grandma's house to escape her abusive family.

The movie is great fun to watch with my family. Parts of this film was filmed in Sarasota,FL where we live and I did work as an extra on this film. We were thrilled to find it and have a copy to enjoy again and again, and of course to go with the my keepsake Honky Tonk Freeway t-shirt, paycheck stubs and letter of thanks.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!.......2006-03-17

I love this movie. There is wall-to-wall entertainment; or rather, tire-to-tire. Not one minute leaves you bored. It's a road movie but there is so much more. I love the characters. The actors playing them are all fantastic. I know this is an awful review but if you have ever just wanted to relax, past midnight, to watch a cool movie that will make you laugh but not to where your ribs hurt (the older we get, the harder it is to watch really, really funny movies, isn't it?) then this is your film.

3 out of 5 stars More facts about than a reveiw........2006-03-05

Hi im carl and i live in Sarasota florida. When i was young around 1980 or so Interstate 75 was being built down the west coast. Just east of Sarasota there is a town called Fruitville. This is the town they used as Ticlaw. They painted all of the town pink, and erected a false church steeple behind some trees. The overpass that is referenced in the movie was just south of the Fruitville road(SR780) exit and passed over Palmer road. Its close proximity to the SR780 exit made the palmer road overpass not need any exits. But you will have to watch the movie to find out what they do to the overpass(which was a brand new I75 overpass). I rated it as a three as it was a so-so film but has interesting Florida and I75 history. I just ordered my copy for posterity.

If you are looking for a good laugh, get this movie! An oldie, I've been looking for it on cable for 10+ years. Beverly D'Angelo, Beau Bridges, William Devane, Jessica Tandy, Hume Chroyn, David (?) (the guy who played "Sledgehammer") and other character actors you'll recoznize. One of the funniest scenes has George Dzunda smelling women's panties.

I remember watching this movie as a teen and for many of my adult years, I had been looking for it. I went on the amazon just for the fun of it a low and behold, there it was. I was so happy that I ordered it right away.

3 out of 5 stars "When I send you brothers out into the world of flimflam, scoot, and scam, you'll be twice as sharp and bad as bad.".......2006-09-19

I'm not exactly sure what The Monkey Hu$tle (1976) refers to (even after watching the film last night), but according to one of the tag lines, `It ain't legal an it sure ain't safe...but it do seem worthwhile!', so there you go. Co-produced and directed by Arthur Marks (Detroit 9000, Linda Lovelace for President, Friday Foster), the film features Yaphet Kotto (Live and Let Die, Alien), Randy Brooks (Colors), Thomas Carter ("The White Shadow"), Donn C. Harper (Mimic 2), and Rosalind Cash (The Omega Man, Uptown Saturday Night). Also appearing is Debbi Morgan (Mandingo), Fuddle Bagley (J.D.'s Revenge), Kirk Calloway (Weekend Pass), Steven Williams (The Blues Brothers, "The X Files"), and Rudy Ray Moore (The Human Tornado, Disco Godfather), probably best known for his Dolemite character from the 1975 film of the same name (if you haven't seen it, it's about one of the cheapest, funniest blaxploitation features ever).

As the film begins we see Yaphet Kotto, playing the character Big Daddy Foxx, a hustler of sorts, driving around the south side of Chicago in a blue Sanford and Son pickup truck with white, shag interior, stopping at an abandoned building which, apparently, he uses as an office/storage facility for his ill-gotten goods. Soon after a couple of young bloods named Player (Carter) and Tiny (Harper) make the scene, looking to hook up with Foxx so that they may `get over', which I think means getting paid (the phrase is used extensively in the film, especially by those who have very little in the way of green). Anyway, after a scam at the train station Player and Tiny hook up with Win (Brooks), a drummer, who got shorted on a gig or something, and now has returned home to find not only his friends but also his little brother Baby `D (Calloway) have taken up with Foxx, much to his disproval. Not only that, but his girlfriend Vi (Morgan), whose mother Sweet Mama (Cash) runs a soul food restaurant, has taken up with another due to his negligence in writing her while he was away...man, the life of a musician sure is difficult. From here a bunch of stuff happens, including more scams, but the main plot seems to be how the city is planning to tear up the neighborhood to lay down a new expressway, and everyone's trying to come together to avert loosing their homes. Glitterin' Goldie (Moore), another hustler (who seems to have a thing for gold lamay jumpsuits), makes the scene, there's a catfight, Foxx hooks up with Sweet Mama, Win tries to patch things up with Vi by sneaking into her bedroom in the middle of the night, Player and Tiny take revenge on a dude who messed over Win, Win's skins (drums) get trashed in retaliation, more scams occur, there's some roller disco action, Baby `D breaks out on his own, and Win catches a beat down along with having to come up with some bread to get some new skins so that he may play in the giant block party set up to promote killing the proposed expressway project.

The film, released by American International Pictures (AIP for short), is pretty goofy in general, full of exaggerated performances, huge Afros, some of the most horrendous 1970s denim fashions I've ever seen, along with scads of dialogue I could barely understand, including the following...

`She was a booger bear, but she had educated lips and a body for days.'

As best as I can tell the character makes a derogatory statement about a woman, but then follows up with mention of her better qualities.

Here's another baffling line...

`Chumped by a broke stacked dog, the wino's reject.'

I won't even attempt to decipher that one...and here's one more...

`The closer the bone, the sweeter the meat.'

This was another line used by a character talking about a woman, but since I neglected to take Jive 101 in school, I'm unsure the intent behind the statement (I think it was meant as flattery, but I'm not positive).

The story's a real mish mash, focusing on various go nowhere minor plots from time to time, but it's mostly made up of various strangely garbed characters perpetrating different kinds of scams, cons, and flimflams, always trying to `get over' and asking each other if they can `dig it'. I didn't really have a favorite scene from the film, but there was one part that was kind of funny in that after Player and Tiny beat up a dude in getting revenge for their friend Win, Win's place, along with his drums, gets trashed in retaliation and someone scrawled on the wall the following, `You been warned succa'...succa? Hooked on phonics worked for me I guess...there was one aspect of the film I really liked and that was all the shots of Chicago, but then again I'm kind of partial to films that feature the Windy City seeing as how I've spent most of my life around the place. As far as the performances, I mentioned earlier they were exaggerated (and I wasn't kidding), and sometimes it's kind of funny but it does wear a little thin after a while, given how little substance there seems to be within the actual characters. Most tend to come off as silly caricatures, ones common within the blaxploitation genre. All in all not a completely rotten film, but one that could have used a lot more soul.

The picture, presented in fullscreen format, modified to fit your TV, does look very clean. I would have preferred a widescreen, unaltered format, but oh well...as far as the Dolby Digital mono audio I had no complaints. The only extras included are a theatrical trailer for the film and subtitles in English, French, and Spanish...I have to say, I was especially thankful for the English subtitles as otherwise I would have had to spend an extraordinary amount of effort trying to discern what some of the characters were actually saying.

Cookieman108

By the way, Rudy Ray Moore is displayed prominently on the DVD cover artwork, most likely due to his cult status in the video market stemming from his Dolemite films, but he has a relatively small part in the film, one that includes about a total of ten minutes of screen time.

3 out of 5 stars OLDSCHOOL 76 .......2004-10-29

THE MOVIE WAS VERY FAR OFF, BUT YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THAT HOLLYWOOD MADE IT. I SAW THE MOVIE WHEN IT RELEASED IN 1976. I RECENTLY SAW THE MOVIE, AND IT'S STILL FUNNY, AND BRINGS BACK GREAT MEMORIES.I'M FROM CHICAGO, AND I RECONIZE ALL THE AREA'S THEY FILMED IN. KEEP IN MIND THAT ALOT OF ACTORS AND ACTRESS, WENT ON TO HAVE EXCELLENT MOVIE CAREERS. CAN YOU DIG IT!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Monky AND Hustling huh...?.......2004-10-11

I know it's a blaxploitation film, but why does it have to be called MONKEY Hustle? Talk about degrading. I guess the actors will do anything for a check.

I like black 70's films. While not all were great, many go down as all-time classics to me. This is one of those films that I have not heard of. Usually, if I did not hear about it, it was for good reason.

This films was one of the better ones with decent cinematography. The film on a whole is a film with a story that tries to be ghetto, but fails. It is supposed to be a bout scam artists, but the scams that they pull are not the type of scams that people in the ghetto would pull. It almost seems as if this is a film by 'Hollywood' with their ideas on what ghetto hustles and scams should be. These hustles are too clean-cut for me. The film is entertaining though.

I cannot call this a classic. I cannot even say that I would keep it in a collection, but it is something to see. The girls with their tight jeans is a sight to behold. It makes me want to jump back in time and go them!

Overall, it tried to be a lown-down ghetto wise, scamming black film, but turns out to be a 'hollywood' black film. This is not hard-core like Shaft, Superfly or even Uptown Saturday Night. This film is soft while trying to be hard. I cannot say stay away, but...

Where is Lady Sings the Blues, Sparkle, Claudine(WS), Coolie High(WS), Three the Hard Way, Black Belt Jones and some other notable black 70's films on DVD? What is the delay?

2 out of 5 stars Open season on the LA freeway.......2004-10-06

Back in the mid to late 80's, a popular fad emerged in LA (that's Los Angeles to you and me) that involved drivers on the freeways taking pot shots at each other, I suppose as a means to relieve tension, as I've heard the road ways in that area have some of the worst traffic congestion in the country. While I've never condoned such activity, I, as many probably, can certainly relate to the frustration about being stuck in traffic and having to deal with snarled traffic, noodle headed drivers, and endless construction projects (at least in and around Chicago). Freeway (1988), released around the time when the incidents of shootings on the LA freeways seemed at their height, tries to capitalize on the event, rather unsuccessfully, in my opinion.

The DVD case promotes the fact the film was produced by the same people who produced Highlander (1986), and that might carry a bit more weight for me if those same people hadn't also been responsible for the incomprehensible sequel Highlander II: The Quickening. The film was directed by someone named Francis Delia, and a quick check of this person's credits include episodes of Friday the 13th (the TV series...remember that? I do...) and Weird Al Yankovic videos...uh oh...things are not looking good. The film stars Darlanne Fluegel (she was the blonde floozy William Petersen's character would shack up with from time to time in 1985's To Live and Die in L.A.), James Russo (a recognizable B movie actor and graduate of the Mickey Rourke School of Acting and Attitude, has made appearances in mainstream movies like Donnie Brasco and The Postman), Billy Drago (he played Frank Nitti in the 1987 film The Untouchables...he's the one Kevin Costner pushed off the roof), and Richard Belzer, probably most know for his role on the Law & Order: SUV television series as the smart alecky Detective Munch.

The story (such as it is) centers on a character named Sarah (Fluegel), or Sunny, to her friends (since I don't know the woman, I'll stick with Sarah). Sarah is a trauma nurse in a metropolitan hospital in LA, and widowed within the last year as her husband was killed as they were driving on the freeway, shot in the head by a passing motorist. Plagued with nightmares, and the fact that the police have yet to capture the killer, Sarah relives the experience every time another victim of the freeway shooter arrives at the hospital, and the frequency has been increasing. This prompts Sarah to put more pressure on the police, but when that seems to have little effect, she decides to try and track the killer, who has begun calling into a local radio talk show, hosted by Dr. Lazarus (Belzer). She does learn the killer's identity, but soon finds herself in over her head, as the killer learns about her. Will she be able to expose the freeway killer before she becomes his next victim? I won't tell...

Man, this movie is bad. It's something you'd expect to see on the Lifetime Channel, except for a couple of scenes with some very brief nudity and profanity. The story lacks any realism, and asks too much in terms of acceptance of its' audience. Also, there are just no likeable characters in this whole thing. Fluegel's character is somewhat annoying and kind of moronic, as when she's not busy badgering the police, acting all petulant and throwing the occasional hissy fit about their inability of finding her husband's killer (in her defense, the police in this film come off as completely lame and ineffectual), she's playing Nancy Drew researching obvious clues to the identity of the killer. I am not sure when this leaves time for her actual job, as she seems to spend very little time at it, which is completely unrealistic as nursing, especially in a trauma room is an extremely busy and taxing occupation. I loved the scene where Sarah, getting into bed half nekkid, hears a knock on the door, throws on a silky robe, and finds a person she doesn't know (played by Russo, who's been stalking her for some mysterious reason), as he's returning her wallet that he `accidentally' kept in a previous encounter. She seems startled and says, "Oh, I was expecting someone else." Like who? You're half nekkid and trying to go to bed. After some lame banter, he leaves, calls a few minutes later (for some more lame banter), and then comes back, sneaks into her apartment, and they have sex. Sex with a stranger who broke into your apartment? That's always a good idea. Maybe it was his reward for returning her wallet...the killer (the film would have us believe all the LA freeway shootings were done by one individual, rather than just a bunch of fed up motorists) drives around in a late model Lincoln Continental shooting people at random, spouting quotes from the Book of Revelations (the angels tell him to kill the Sodomites, or some such nonsense), eluding the non-existent police force. Where are Ponch and Jon when you need them? The dialogue is the sort of tripe that makes your eyes roll, and fosters contempt in general. The film also features one of the most obvious red herrings I've ever seen, as in the first half we are led to believe the killer maybe be a certain individual, but any reasonably astute viewer will see through this lame attempt. The best part of the film featured a cameo appearance by Clint Howard, as a really sleazy car mechanic..."How long will it take to fix my car?", "Well, why don't you come into my `ahem' office, so we can discuss that, if you know what I mean?"

Anchor Bay Entertainment provides a good-looking wide screen print here, with decent audio, but no special features other than an original theatrical trailer. If you feel you have to see this film, your best bet is seeking it out as rental.

4 out of 5 stars Well, maybe not four stars exactly but..........2003-09-22

I have fond memories of this movie. When I was younger I had a thing, and still do, for thrillers or horror films that are driven (no pun intended) by cars. While killer car films were my favorite, I often enjoyed the occasional thriller that only had a single link to automobiles. My mother brought a VHS copy of Freeway home for me back when it was still in print and I remember watching it a few times and liking it though I considered it a more "adult" movie since it paid more attention to plot and character than vehicular mayhem. Years later, I lost the video yet still remembered the movie. Why Anchor Bay released this I really cannot say. You can ask most of your friends and family and I feel confident to say most of them will never have seen it. A quick check of the Internet Movie Database tells that the film did not do well at the box office. This is a movie that has wandered around in the shadows of late night cable for over ten years making the occasional impression on someone who never forgot it. The movie, I suppose, was a failure to it's creators. But it's a strange little gem. A weird vision of late-night killings on the freeways in LA in the 1980's (where I have heard freeway killings were very frequent). I don't know who spoke up for this movie and got in on DVD in widescreen but I bought it as soon as I saw it, walking wide-eyed to the checkout counter and leaving the cashier wondering how I could be so excited about some cheap DVD with a generic looking cover. It's no masterpiece of suspense but it is certainly a tight little thriller that has gone overlooked and, despite it's DVD release, probably always will. Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Papa's got a brand new trick........2006-09-21

Ok, for one thing this is my first review of anything on amazon or otherwise.

This is a great flick. It has a killer soundtrack. I will agree with one reviewer that it shouldn't be "Freeway 2".I found that rather unfortunate. But you know how it is in hollywood. The funny part is that "Freeway" was a cult hit at best anyway...

But "Trick" on it's own, held it's own. A very clever and inventive plot twist at the end, and I'm not talkin' about "Sister Rosa " being a man. That was obvious to me the first time they showed him/her, and I'm pretty sure it was planned that way.

It got a lttie silly at times, but then I realized it was SUPPOSED to be silly. After all we ARE talking about fairy tales here aren't we? Matthew Bright, a low budget Quentin?? The soundtrack wove perfectly into the fabric of the film, going from frightening to playful to somber as the mood dictated.

An art house 5 stars, not a hollywood 5 stars. which I'm pretty sure is a good thing. Oh yeah, and i got it for like $1.14 plus shipping on VHS.

4 out of 5 stars Vincent Gallo Steals Every Scene.......2006-09-15

With this film, I'm going to do what Roger Ebert does. After watching the film, I would give it three stars and a C. However, the qualities that it has that allowed me to enjoy it manage to bump up my grade to a B. The first Freeway film (by the same writer/director of this film, Matthew Bright) was a new spin on Little Red Riding Hood which starred Kiefer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon. Freeway 2 has absolutely nothing to do with Freeway, except for the fact that this film also rehashes a classic story...This time Hansel and Gretel. Natasha Lyonne ('Slums of Beverly Hills') plays Crystal, also known as White Girl...White Girl has an eating disorder and is sentenced to 25 years in prison for some drug charges. The judge is director John Landis. In a hospital for eating disorders, awaiting transfer to a prison, White Girl meets Cyclona, who has more than just a little bit of mental problems. The two manage to escape from the prison and begin to head to Mexico so Cyclona can reunite with Sister Gomez (Vincent Gallo, who I'll talk about in a minute). David Alan Grier is hilarious as White Girl's lawyer. Anyway, I would've never heard of this film but I was surfing through Vincent Gallo's
filmography and stumbled upon it. The title didn't strike me, but it said Vincent Gallo played "the wicked witch." He doesn't play a wicked witch, but he does play the witch of the story and manages to steal the movie. Which doesn't say much, because the performances (and it has a lot to do with the bad dialogue) are horrible. Even Lyonne, who's a talented actress, is pretty much wasted here. I've never seen Freeway 1, so I can't compare the two films...But, overall, this movie DID keep me entertained. It was a pretty bad movie (I think it's straight-to-video); But Vincent Gallo and David Alan Grier are funny as hell. As a side note, this movie has something to offend everyone. The movie contains elements of eating disorders, murder, necrophilia, pedophilia, cannibalism, and Vincent Gallo...So not everyone will like it. If you are a Gallo fan, it's worth checking out. It's not much, but it has it's moments.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2004-12-28

Being a fan of the original "Freeway," I almost did not rent this movie because it is not a continuation of the first movie. In fact, it doesn't even have the same actors as the first and its plot is completely different. Also, the video cover suggests that the movie is a low budget b-rated flick with terrible acting and an even worse plot. I was pleasantly surprised. If you are a fan of the original than you will absolutely love this movie. Its darker, more perverted, twisted and sick. Its a dark disturbing movie that delves into as many dark and taboo themes as one could ask for. Cannibalism, serial killing, bulimia, lesbianism, psychopaths, fantasy..this movie has it all. I also loved the inclusion of a fairy tale theme that was actually more a part of the movie than the little red riding hood was in the original. Definitely a must see!

3 out of 5 stars aaaah, now i get it........2002-11-04

okay, this movie was junk, and the one that came before it wasn't too much better, but i've noticed that a lot of people haven't seen the connection between the two. basically, the first one was little red riding hood. the second one? hansel and gretal. you're welcome.

4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2002-07-06

This movie was amazing, although the first "Freeway" was my favourite movie of all time. This movie was faboulous. Natasha Lyonne was great - her best movie ever . Vincent Gallo is faboulous as well. Cyclona is an obsessed freind and a crazy killer. You can't blame her. She was some what possesed by the devil. With Sister Gomez being a tranvestite killing children, putting intestines on the stairs, and making Cyclona watch her do, um, naughty things, This movie was incredibly frightning but wonderful. It was a little hard to handle.
