Description
This DANCE IN AMERICA performance/documentary explores the lives of the ABT's four lead male dancers: Cuba's Jose Manual Carreno, Spain's Angel Corella, Ukraine's Vladimir Malakhov, and the U.S.'s Ethan Stiefel. Concludes with the four dancers performing.
Customer Reviews:
WOW!!!.......2007-02-20
These 4 dancers are just magic! To see FOUR such fabulous male dancers in the one company at the one time is astounding.I have been attending Ballet performances and films for over 40 years and I am still saying Wow! Please have more films of dancers of this calibre. I dont think I will be able to afford to come to the U.S.A. to see them in person!
Wonderful but too short.......2006-12-05
This DVD certainly contains some priceless gems, but I agree with other reviewers that it is entirely too short. This DVD can be a bit corny at times but it still belongs in the must-have category if for no other reason than Correno's thrilling rendition of Diana and Acteon with his cousin. I just wish it showed the entire pas de deux instead of just the coda.
Highly entertaining, and a rare opportunity to hear four great dancers speak about their lives!.......2006-03-14
Anyone who appreciates performances by the exuberant and breath-taking ANGEL CORELLA will love this DVD. Along with his three ABT colleagues, Jose Manuel Carreño, Ethan Stiefel, and Vladimir Malakhov, viewers are taken through a real rehearsal by Mark Morris while being shown interviews and photos from the lives of all four dancers! WOW, I just loved it.
Fun stuff!.......2004-06-08
American Ballet Theatre director Kenneth McKenzie (a former dancer himself) knows how to find, encourage, and showcase great male dancers. The four featured here are a diverse group from the current crop of principals. McKenzie seems to look to Spain and Latin America for a certain kind of fiery performer (Angel Corella from Spain and Jose Manuel Carreno from Cuba represent this group here). Russians, who once dominated the ballet stage, are represented here by Vladimir Malakhov (from the Ukraine). Ethan Stiefel (the heart-breaker star of ballet-pic "Center Stage") is the sole American.
This film is a documentary with a short dance performance appendix. Each dancer is filmed on his home turf and speaks about the importance of his family and country of origin. Nothing too revealing here. Short clips from auditions and key roles do give the viewer a sense of the unique performance styles of each of these dancers. The dance "appendix" is a short work choreographed by Mark Morris to a Schumann piano quintet (mercifully, not to the rock standard "Born to Be Wild").
The only annoying thing about this short film is that it seems to feel the need to defend the masculinity of male dancers. Didn't Edward Villella address that issue once and for all in "Prodigal Son"? My advice is to ignore the rhetoric and just enjoy the great dancing!
Short and more biography than actual dancing.......2004-06-06
I must admit to some disappointment in this DVD; not because of the quality of the content but rather the content itself. Also, this disc is short, very short...only 54 minutes in fact
This DVD features four of the male stars of todays American Ballet Theatre: That being, Jose Manuel Carreno (Cuba), Angel Corella (Spain), Vladimir Malakhov (Russia) and Ethan Stiefel (USA).
I'd expected some extended video of each of the dancers actually dancing, but instead the bulk of the video is more of less a mini biography of each of the dancers with brief snippets of each of them from previous shows they were in.
There is also an extended section showing them rehearsing a dance, a pas de quatre, danced to Scubert's piano quintet; the finished work is about 7 minutes long and shown at the very end of the disc. This was well done and performed before a live audience.
I think the highlight of this disc, to me, was a short segment of each of them on a trampoline, with a single photograph frame capturing some spectacular aerial pose at the apex of their leaps. Unbelievable height and agility.
All in all, not quite what I expected when I purchased this DVD. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy it, I did, (getting some insight on the lives of these fabulously talented individual was very interesting, but it's just not something that I'd probably watch more than once. And watching some of my favorite choreographed dances is something that I do watch on a regular and repeated basis.

Born to Be Wild has been dismissed more than once as a knockoff of Free Willy. Except for the teaming of a troubled kid and a large mammal in pursuit of the latter's freedom, that comparison is off the mark. Part screwball comedy and part animal-rights drama, the film stars Wil Horneff as Rick, a young, incorrigible teen whose mother (Helen Shaver), a primate researcher, enlists him to help care for a gorilla named Katie. Much to his surprise, Rick bonds with Katie, a lonely simian who yearns for the Africa of her youth and whose expressive range includes a fair amount of sign language. When Katie's coldhearted owner (Peter Boyle) decides to take her back and put her on display at a department store, Rick steals her away and stuffs her in a stolen van--which he then proceeds to drive to Canada hoping his girlfriend's uncle (John C. McGinley), a conspiracy nut, can lead this 800-pound gorilla to freedom. Rick's quixotic mission is not without funny mishaps and even some character-building challenges to the hero's conviction. (A rambunctious, often impolite girl like Katie is not the easiest travel companion.) But the film's final arrival turns out to be much more than one might have expected: a moving testament to the joy and pain of accepting one's destiny. --Tom Keogh
Description
Here, there and everywhere else she wants to be is Katie, a hilariously playful three-year-old gorilla who knows how to communicate using sign language. But what makes her more special to 14-year-old Rick (Wil Horneff) is that she's his friend. So when Katie is reclaimed by her former owner (Peter Boyle) and penned up as a flea market attarction, Rick unlocks the cage and hits the road with his 400-pound pal! Pursued from California to Canada, the two share narrow escapes and wide-open excitement. Through it all, Katie - whether she's spraying Rick with soda or scarfing down burgers - is having big fun on the run! After all, adventure comes naturally when you're Born to Be Wild.

Great family movie full of excitement and adventure.......2007-02-19
Better than I thought it would be. Katie the gorilla has a mind of her own. You will laugh so hard you can't see. Katie teaches a 14 yr old boy Named Rick how to love and to be loved. He was committed to community service work after getting into all kinds of trouble. His father just up and left Rick and his mother. Rick got bullied at school and always got in trouble with the law. Then his mother, the scientist, introduced Rick to Katie. Katie mocked him at first, but then Rick and Katie the Gorilla became really close and were best friends. Rick had to learn to sign again so he could communicate with Katie the gorilla.
Then the unthinkable happens, Katie was to replace a caged displayed gorilla which was abused. Rick is furious with his mother and goes to save Katie himself. Man did Katie have fun on the run to Canada.
Rick saved Katie's life.
Very funny family movie. So glad we bought it. It was hilarious.
Highly recommended as a purchase.

Description
ABT at the Met: This triple bill of ballets, with an addtional glittering pas de deux, is a delightful introduction to the range and excitement of American Ballet Theatre's reperatory. The first piece is Les Sylphides in which Mikhail Baryshnikov is the poet surrounded by the drifting chorus of sylphs. The Sylvia Pas de deux is a sparkling duet for Martine van Hamel and Patrick Bissell, and it is followed by Triad, one of Sir Kenneth MacMillan's most poetic and sensitive short ballets. Finally, in a blaze of brilliant dancing, the Grand Pas from Paquita shows off the technical virtuousity of ABT's dancers in a cascade of mock-Spanish bravura choreography staged by Natalia Makarova from the original Petipa version.
The Dream: A comical tale of fairies, mismatched lovers, and a mischievous sprite, Sir Frederick Ashton's enduring one-act ballet, The Dream, has delighted audiences since its premiere in 1964. Set to the ethereal music of Felix Mendelssohn, the ballet is a charming interpretation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. "Ashton's genius soars typically to the heights of poetic metaphor," boasted The New York Times. "Charm is making a comeback in New York this spring," enthused The Washington Post. The New York Observer described the ballet as "so fluent, so charged, so natural," that "you know you're in the hands of a master." To celebrate the centennial of Ashton's birth, DANCE IN AMERICA presents American Ballet Theatre's acclaimed staging, starring Ethan Stiefel, Alessandra Ferri, and Herman Cornejo.16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen. 5.1 Dolby Surround.
Born To Be Wild: The depth of male dancing at American Ballet Theatre today is unprecedented in the history of American ballet, thanks to the cadre of international talent gathered by Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie. This performance documentary travels home with Jose Manuel Carreño (Cuba), Angel Corella (Spain), Vladimir Malakhov (Russia), and Ethan Stiefel (USA), exploring the dancers' personal backgrounds and formal training. Don Quixote: Choreographed by Mikhail Baryshnikov after Petipa and Gorsky's original staging, this sparkling full-length production captures all the excitement, Spanish flair, and humor of Cervantes' masterpiece. It is one of the most popular and joyful ballets surviving the imperial Russian ballet's repertory. American Ballet Theatre was ecstatically received by the New York press for this performance. The New York Times described how 'the dancers had the audience gasping', while the New York Post felt that the company had 'never looked better. Dancing flows out of the Ballet with a boisterous beauty'. Starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, Cynthia Harvey, Richard Shafer, Brian Adams.
