Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

Lonesome Dove.......2007-06-08
This dvd starts off slow, but you get so attached to the characters. It is very authentic historically. You will laugh, cry, and think about the characters and story for a long time after viewing!!
The real deal........2007-05-15
This is the second time I had purchased this Title. The first one had anything but the original actors. This one is the real deal and the movie is excellent.
Great Drama & Storytelling leaves you begging for more.......2007-04-29
this is without a doubt the best Western ever, and for Western Lovers, there's more, the whole Lonesome Dove series is worth owning. I recommend reading the books also,.... more than once
Duval is an American treasure!.......2007-04-19
If I could have given this film 10 stars, I would have. This is an important film. Important in that every American should see it. The chemistry between Duval and Jones is superb. I watch the DVD about every six months or so. What can one say about Duval? His performance is the best he's ever done and puts him on my list of top five actors of all time. He's even said that this role was his finest. My only regret was that this was a TV mini series and not eligible for Oscar consideration. If it had been Duval would have walked off the stage with his second Best Actor statue. Please do not miss this.
one of the greatest westerns adapted from a great novel.......2007-04-10
luckily this screenplay was not scripted by the author himself like 'dead man's walk', so all the unnecessary non-stop yammering of gus from page one until he died was so smartly omitted that making this 'lonesome dove' movie one of the greatest westerns ever made into movie. wonderful cast, terrific performance by all the actors in it. great screenplay, wonderful and appropriate sound track lingering behind, floating up in time to deepen the feeling of every specific moment. duvall did a better-than-oscar-nomination performance, amazingly made that unforgettable character alive and became a larger-than-life image. tommy lee jones was also the best choice playing call's role. wonderful cinematography footage and settings, not one inch wasted or misplaced.

Almost in spite of itself, The Cowboys has taken its place among John Wayne's most beloved films. It wasn't always that way: When it was released in January of 1972, the film was widely criticized for appearing to promote the notion that boys become men through violence. From a politically correct perspective, this apparent message is arguably deplorable (and some interpreted the film's young fighters as a reflection of young draftees into the Vietnam war), but there's no denying that The Cowboys remains as invigorating as it ever was, no matter how dubious its thematic implications. Based on a novel by William Dale Jennings, and adapted with Jennings by the married screenwriting team of Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr. (whose impressive credits include Hud, Hombre, and Norma Rae), the movie opens with aging ranch owner Wil Anderson (Wayne) desperate for ranch-hands to herd 1,500 head of cattle across 400 miles of dangerous territory. With no better options, he reluctantly hires boys from the local schoolhouse (including Robert Carradine in his screen debut), and an experienced, worldly-wise cook named Nightlinger (played to perfection by Roscoe Lee Browne) joins the cattle drive--the first black man the boys have ever seen.
A Hollywood liberal who initially felt at odds with Wayne's right-wing politics, Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) originally sought George C. Scott for the lead, but studio executives urged him to convince Wayne to take the role. It was a happy outcome for both, as Rydell directs Wayne with an enjoyable mixture of Old West humor and grizzled trail-hardiness, and The Cowboys is a top-drawer production with gorgeous cinematography (on location in Mexico and Colorado) by veteran cameraman Robert Surtees. Colleen Dewhurst appears briefly but memorably as the madam of a traveling troupe of prostitutes (in a scene often cut from earlier TV broadcasts and some home-video releases), and the young A Martinez (who would later star in several TV soap operas and the indie-hit Powwow Highway) makes a strong impression in a prominent supporting role. But the real reason for the film's lasting popularity is the hiss-worthy villainy of Bruce Dern (as "Long Hair," leader of the rustlers), who earned a dubious place in movie history for his character's cheating approach to gunplay. No matter how you interpret its themes of fatherly influence and justified vengeance, The Cowboys (later the basis of a short-lived TV series) is undeniably entertaining, dominated by Wayne's reliable presence and bolstered by a rousing, Copland-esque score by John Williams. --Jeff Shannon

Not the Apple Dumpling Gang.......2007-06-16
This picture deserves a better reputation. Yes, it has a bunch of kids in it - but it's not Disney-style cutes and sentiment. And boy, does it hold up in this beautiful presentation with the overture and entr'acte. Completely irresistible. (Why wasn't Bruce Dern nominated for this?)
revenge is sweet & so is the duke.......2007-06-11
john wayne gives the last significant performance of his career (i dont much care for "the shootist", sorry) in this revisionist western from director mark rydell. highlighted by the charmingly amateurish performances by the young supporting cast, and the oh-so-sinister bruce dern in his breakthrough role, the movie is vigilantly off-beat, and more true to the spirit of the 1970s than the 1870s. im not sure wayne fans will like it, but i think wayne haters (oh how i pity the fools) might.
The Cowboys.......2007-06-10
This is a very good movie. It is a intriguing movie. It keeps your attention. I would recommend to everyone.
100 Years Of Greatness!!!!!!!.......2007-05-28
My brothers and I grew-up on this and many of Big John's flicks. This is one of his best and left me with the best message for growing boys of today. Just like John Wayne says near the end of the movie: "Every man wants his children to grow-up better than he was" was pure greatness!!!!! And has stuck with us to this day. Only a "non-American" could not appreciate the values expressed on this movie........
Worth Watching.......2007-05-27
I had never watched "The Cowboys" before because, when it first came out, the concept of John Wayne leading a bunch of kids on a cattle drive didn't appeal to me. However, the awareness that this was one of 30 some John Wayne movies I hadn't seen led me to watch it last night. I was impressed. For one thing, I could tell from the beginning that this was a major production for its' day. The cinematography was impressive and the location and sets were well done too. The case for why a school room-full of kids were chosen for the job was credibly made and the journey begins. There's a fair amount of action and entertainment along the way. John Wayne gives a good performance as the cattleman who comes to respect his trailhands. There is some suspenseful conflict with some bad guys and something that rarely happens in a John Wayne film occurs. I won't say what it was but I could only think of "The Shootist" and, in an indirect way, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" as the other times it occurred after "The Alamo".
The kids give a credible performance and so does Roscoe Lee Brown. Interestingly, there was a bit actor with the last name Canutt who showed up on the credits (as one of the bad guys). Could it the Duke found work for a relative of his old sparring partner Yakima Canutt? Collen Dewhurst is featured but she's over-billed for her gratuitous part. This is not a great movie but it turned out to be a lot better than I thought it would be.

This sexy thriller has been acclaimed as one of the year s best films. Two beautiful women are caught up in a lethally twisted mystery and ensnared in an equally dangerous web of erotic passion. There s nothing like this baby anywhere! This sinful pleasure is a fresh triumph for Lynch, and one of the best films of the year. Visionary daring, swooning eroticism and colors that pop like a whore s lip gloss! says Rolling Stone s Peter Travers. See it then see it again! (Time Out New York)

Pandora couldn't resist opening the forbidden box containing all the delusions of mankind, and let's just say David Lynch, in Mulholland Drive, indulges a similar impulse. Employing a familiar film noir atmosphere to unravel, as he coyly puts it, "a love story in the city of dreams," Lynch establishes a foreboding but playful narrative in the film's first half before subsuming all of Los Angeles and its corrupt ambitions into his voyeuristic universe of desire. Identities exchange, amnesia proliferates, and nightmare visions are induced, but not before we've become enthralled by the film's two main characters: the dazed and sullen femme fatale, Rita (Laura Elena Harring), and the pert blonde just-arrived from Ontario (played exquisitely by Naomi Watts) who decides to help Rita regain her memory. Triggered by a rapturous Spanish-language version of Roy Orbison's "Crying," Lynch's best film since Blue Velvet splits glowingly into two equally compelling parts. --Fionn Meade
Customer Reviews:
The best movie of the 21st Century (so far).......2007-06-25
I could watch this DVD 199 times (in a row!) and still not have the puzzle figured out. Is the whole thing a dream? All but a few minutes? Only the first two-thirds? None? And what's up with the senior couple? Or the cowboy? And whatever it is that lives behind the diner? And Lee Grant's Louise Bonner: she's the only character that really knows what's going on, right?
I would've flashed up "spoiler alert" -- but this movie is unspoilable. This is David Lynch's masterpiece. I liked "Blue Velvet." I liked the first season of "Twin Peaks," but kinda lost interest when it focused too much on the Log Lady in Season Two. But I lost interest in Lynch after the terrible "Wild At Heart." Nothing David Lynch has done before can prepare you for this. This is the cinematic equivalent of Bob Beamon's 29ft 2.5in high jump in 1968: nothing David Lynch has ever done will prepare you for something this extraordinary.
What is it about? L.A. A city of juxtapositions. The glitzy and the tawdry. Success and failure. Reality and delusion. The blonde and the brunette. Innocence and hot girl-on-girl action. Betty Elms and Diana Selwyn. What's it really about? Who knows! I don't think even David Lynch really knows. This is an incredible work of art (not all movies are "art") that will leave you wondering about what you just saw for weeks, months, years, after the fact.
Lynch is the man!!!!!!!.......2007-06-17
Never mind the bollocks of any negative reviews. I'm not going to go any details about this film seeing I'm the "M" of the count (yeh!!!!).If you are into mindblowing films that will leave you in a trance for days on end , well then by all means just buy-watch-and enjoy.
Brilliant.......2007-06-07
THIS IS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME, i don't even wan't to talk about or explain this movie because for people who haven't seen it, it will take away from the film's brilliance. Excellent movie.
100% Percent Weird! .......2007-05-21
Director David Lynch is one of the most bizzare directors of our time. Once again, he continues to keep our interests in check with a spinning web of intrigue and danger. Naomi Watts is one of the most promissing actresses in Hollywood. Her performance as Betty, the naive actress from Deep River, Ontario (just east of Ottawa) is genuine and sincere. Laura Elena Herring's pressence as Rita is just mezzmerising. She's one of the most beautiful women I've scene on film. The camera just loves her! However, the film story and plot is enough to frustrate the average viewer. If you've scene some of Lynch's other work (minus "Dune", "The Straight Story" and "The Elephant Man"), you'll know you're in for a challenge. Fans of "Twin Peaks" will enjoy this one! Aside from the twists and turns and the bizarre sub-plots, this film is 80% percent good, 100% percent weird!
Right up there with Rosemary's Baby.......2007-05-10
Lynch's story-telling and directing are unparalleled and unique. What is important about this film is that it depicts a certain truth that no other film has ever achieved: DEPICTS THE SUPERNATURAL STRANGENESS OF GOING TO THE SUPERNATURAL "OTHER SIDE" for fame and fortune. Expert landscaping of Hollywood, covering Mind Control, Handlers, controllers, where power comes from, the satanic system and how it is propagated...
More important, Lynch shows what happens to people who rebel once they have sold their souls.
I believe that Lynch here is a prophet screaming in the wilderness about a reality that he knows--now he can't just outright tell you. So he disguises much of it in confabulistic imagery and metaphor...but for those who know, IT IS THE REAL THING.
I am surprised they released it, but Lynch fooled them. If you want to know how it works in Hollywood from a supernatural-mind-control-soul scalping perspective...see it. As for the sex... it's psycho-sex... not gratuitous sex... everything in this film advances the plot, the point of which is: YOU CANNOT WIN. No one wins in Hollywood. You just prolongue losing.
There are several versions of the devil depicted in the film--all of whom run Hollywood and all of whom are the same character. See if you can spot them. Hint. One resides outside by the dumpster of Mr. Winkie's diner, ruling the world. The other is a cowboy. In my opinion, these are all the same Person.
I'll leave it right there. I think the film is required viewing for any serious film buff interested in Hollywood and how it works.

Extremely disappointing sequel.......2007-06-16
Granted most sequels don't live up to the original, this one was a travesty. None of the characters behave remotely the same as in the original. I can easily imagine Tommy Lee Jones' Captain Call letting himself be shot rather than run thru sagebrush in his longjohns. And the character of Clara as played by Anjelica Huston would never act as neurotic and fearful as the Clara in this movie. They turned two very strong and memorable characters into weak and whiny non-entities.
And the ending is ridiculous, given his choices the one Newt makes is so out of character that it's sad. I originally railed against McMurtry since we watched these two series almost back to back recently. When I learned he had nothing to do with this waste of time I felt very relieved. No doubt he felt like he'd been assaulted when he first saw this 'sequel'.
Jon Voigt did okay with what was given to him, he's not Tommy Lee Jones but the main problem was the script. Similarly, Barbara Hershey convinced me she was whiny, petulant and abruptly unable to fend for herself. Louis Gossett shined, like he does no matter how bad the script, he's a very underrated actor in my opinion. And Nia Peeples is both convincing and attractive but her character was mishandled as well.
**slight spoiler**
If you don't like to see violence done to children do not watch this movie. I was appalled at what happened; granted you have to make the audience really loathe the villain but that was just unnecessary.
I can't recommend this, even as a rental, if you've seen the original. If you haven't then none of my points will apply and you may enjoy it.
Damaged Package for DVD.......2007-01-06
DVD came in the mail ripped up. DVD lose inside package.
Return to Lonesome Dove.......2006-11-03
An excellent movie, close to -- but not quite -- as engrossing as the original. Jon Voight did a fine job. My original thought was that he would suffer by comparison with Tommy Lee Jones, but he handled the character beautifully. As in the original, supporting roles were well cast and added to the "flavor" of the movie and its time.
3 stars for trying so hard.......2006-10-03
I have returned to this mini-series after over a decade. I bought Lonesome Dove on DVD a while back and enjoyed it more than I did on my initial viewing. I was not as fond of "Return" when it first aired for a few reasons: The absence of Robert Duvall's Augustus McCrae, Tommy Lee Jones not returning, and a somewhat retreaded narrative. After watching "Return" again, these elements are still problematic but the movie tries so hard to re-capture the spirit of Lonesome Dove that it does manage to succeed on its own merit. One does wonder if, instead of replacing the missing cast members with new actors (or new characters in the case of William Petersen's McCrae like character for example) it had focused on what it did have, namely Rick Schroeder and the Hat Creek Outfit. There are some early appearances of some soon to be famous actors such as Reese Witherspoon and Dennis Haysbert. I might have liked this better if it had just been its own film instead of an over-reaching sequel.

Any short list of the all-time greatest Westerns is bound to include this 1948 Howard Hawks classic about an epic cattle drive. Red River features one of John Wayne's greatest performances. Like his Ethan Edwards in John Ford's 1956 masterpiece The Searchers, the Duke plays an isolated and unsympathetic man who is possessed by bitterness. Wayne is Texas rancher Tom Dunson, who adopts a young boy orphaned in an Indian massacre. That boy, Matthew Garth (played as an adult by Montgomery Clift in his screen debut), becomes Dunson's assistant and heir apparent--until Dunson's temper gets out of control during a long cattle drive and Matt intervenes to stop him. From that moment on, Dunson swears he will kill Matt. Red River has everything a great Western ought to have: a sweeping sense of history, spectacular landscapes, stampedes, gunfights, Indian attacks, and, of course, Walter Brennan as Dunson's crusty old cook and comic sidekick, Nadine Groot. As a special bonus, the film also features the legendary Harry Carey (upon whom Wayne would base some of his gestures in The Searchers) and his son Harry Carey Jr., who became a fixture in Ford and Hawks Westerns. Red River is essential for anyone who loves Westerns, or movies in general. This one's a real beaut. --Jim Emerson
Description
One of the finest westerns ever made, this "monumental, sweeping and powerful" masterpiece (Variety) features impassioned performances, stunning cinematography and adventure on a grand scale. Starring John Wayne, Montgomery Clift (in his screen debut), Walter Brennan, Harry Carey, Sr. and Noah Beery, Jr., Red River is a hard-hitting, action-packed adventure that captures the grandeur, majestyand dangerof the wild American West.Wayne gives "one of the best performances of his career" (Cinebooks) as Tom Dunson, a self-made cattle baron who'll do anything to protect his way of life. So when plummeting livestock values demand that he drive his herd through thetreacherous Chisholm Trail, Tom proves that he'll risk anything to reach his destination even his own sanity.
Customer Reviews:
Red River.......2007-06-25
Director Howard Hawks gave western icon John Wayne another indelible, ruggedly stubborn character to play in his masterful "Red River," a high point of their many collaborations. Populated by colorful supporting characters, including the salty Walter Brennan as camp cook Groot Nadine, "River" combines psychological drama, action, and suspense in a stirring, expansive western landscape. The final settling of scores between Wayne and Clift is unforgettable.
Great Western, slightly disappointing ending........2007-05-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It's rare to see John Wayne playing a bad guy but he carried it well. The photography was great but the film suffers from contrast particularly during some of the frequent night time scenes. Images are almost lost in the dark of the night due to the limitations of old black and white film. If the light dark contrast could be adjusted, the film would benefit greatly. Beyond that, the acting was great, particularly Montgomery Clift. My lone complaint was the ending. It has a sudden character twist where Wayne shifts gears 180 degrees and everyone just seems to pass it off and forgive his characters actions through out the movie simply because he suddenly turns over a new leaf in the final two minutes. This was just a little too much for me. I would have preferred an actual showdown/shoot out.
A Massive Cattle Drive on the Chisholm Trail.......2007-04-11
The movie begins in 1851 in south Texas near the Rio Grande. Cattle baron Tom Dunson (John Wayne) begins with a small group of cows. After 14 years of hard work, he owns a herd consisting of 10,000 head of cattle. The cows are branded with the Red River mark (parallel curves which represent the banks of the Red River).
At the end of the American Civil War, the area is destitute, and Dunson's cattle have little value locally. For this reason, Dunson wants to drive them along the Chisholm Trail to Missouri. But all kinds of problems develop during the long, tedious drive. Quitters abandon Dunson. He finds and shoots them. Noises cause massive cattle stampedes. Finally, a mutineer takes over and leads the herd to Abilene, Kansas, to be sold for a hefty price and then loaded on a railroad. Will Dunson still get his rightful share of his life's work?
This movie comes in black and white. Made in 1948, it shows a young John Wayne. It also clearly predates political correctness, in that Indians are portrayed only as savages and despoilers of Euro-Americans.
Red River.......2007-03-24
Acting/directing not as good as expected, but still a must see for any serious western fan.
Red River in color?.......2007-02-27
I love this film of course. It is a classic. All the elements of a great film are there. The performances, the music. But why decry the ending? That ending is the film. Thats what happened in the film. I suppose some people do not like a happy ending. Would like to see John Wayne killed and come away from a viewing that resolved the story in that way. But not me I like the ending as it is. So I am happy. However one beef. This film has appeared on TV in color I have seen it several times. I just wonder why it does not seem to be available commercialy in color. Younger people seem to have an aversion to b and w. My grandchildren for instance. It is a cinema mystery why this film is not available to buy in color. Does anyone know the answer?

On a bit of a different note.........2007-05-22
Not really going to talk about how "cheesy" some of these films are - "Drive-In Movie Classics" pretty much sums it up and that is what you get.
What I want to do is make a couple of comments about this package of movies that I think many of the other reviewers overlooked:
1 - The packaging of the discs - the package I got consisted of a box with 12 individual cardboard sleeves, each with a single DVD inside. Personally I like this as it seems to have kept the discs secure during shipment. I've bought other multi-disc sets and have never been that impressed with how they were shoe-horned into a single huge clam-shell case. Another thing that I like about the slim sleeves that these discs come in - it makes it really easy to drop one or two of these movies into the pockets of my laptop and/or my portable DVD player case. Also on the sleeves is a short description of each movie - in a very readable 12-pt font.
2 - The number of discs, there are twelve double-sided discs in this collection, with two movies on each side. Why do I think that is important? Mainly because I've bought other sets where a cheaper publisher crammed four movies onto each disc side so as to get 50 movies on five discs. To do that they had to greatly compress the videos which made them have a huge amount of artifacts and pixilation - making them almost unwatchable. The movies on this 12-disc set are of excellent quality, at least as good as possible considering the source material. While there appears to have been some defects in the prints used to make these DVDs (scratches and whatnot) there doesn't seem to be any noticeable additional problems introduced from overly compressing the films to get them on the discs.
This is the third set of videos from Mill Creek Entertainment that I've purchased; I also bought their "Hollywood Legends" and "Cartoon Classics" collections. I must say that I've been very pleased with all three sets and look forward to buying more of their collections.
50 Drive-In Movies of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-04-27
Drive-In Movie Classics is a collection of 50 movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.
Anyways, here is how I rate the movies in Drive-In Movie Classics:
Excellent:
Absolution
Horror of the Zombies
Night Train to Terror
Shock
Snowbeast
Great:
Count Dracula and His Vampire Bride
Don't Look in the Basement
Island Monster, The
Unsane
Werewolf vs. Vampire Women, The
Good:
Creeper
Creepers
Day of the Panther
Devil with Seven Faces, The
Don't Open Till Christmas
Firing Line, The
Going Steady
Invasion of the Bee Girls
Legacy of Blood
Murder Mansion, The
Prime Time
Slave of the Cannibal God
Spare Parts
Trauma
Women of Devil's Island
Bad:
Beast from Haunted Cave
Black Hooker
Breakout from Oppression
Country Blue
Death By Dialogue
Fiend
Guy from Harlem, The
In Hot Pursuit
I Wonder Who's Killing Her Now?
Jive Turkey
Katie's Passion

Manipulator, The
Prisoner of the Lost Universe
Rattlers
Savage Journey
Savage Weekend

Overall, a very good collection that is well worth your time and money.
On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 4.1.......2007-04-14
Drive-in movies are an all but forgotten part of the teenage-dating ritual.
Once upon a time, on Friday and Saturday nights (weather permitting), kids everywhere would head out to their local drive-in theater, ostensibly to catch a double feature. The car would get parked in a somewhat elevated space and a tinny little speaker had to be hung on one of the two front seat windows. After lighting up a dashboard bug coil (to keep the mosquitoes away) then came the quick run to buy popcorn, french fries and Cokes. Finally, back in the car, we'd settle down and wait for the show to start.
When the snack bar commercial started running (usually right around dusk), we all knew that soon the fun would begin! The "Coming Attractions" and a cartoon were followed by the opening credits of the first film. That was the cue for most kids to stop watching that weathered outdoor screen, and begin to watch each other (and then some). In this fashion, we happily managed to ignore some of the strangest movies ever made.
The DRIVE-IN MOVIE CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK is the perfect way for those of us old enough to remember what we missed back then (and why!) to finally see exactly what was going on up there on the screen. (To the younger folks who may never have experienced a drive-in theater, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out what your future parents were doing on movie nights.)
.

The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly made and entertaining teen comedy that's more coherent than most. The depiction of parent-teen relations is fairly honest and particularly well-played by Richard Masur (Risky Business) and Carol Kane (In the Soup) as the parents. The DVD includes a very funny and rambunctious audio commentary track by the screenwriter and director, as well as interviews with the grown-up Coreys. A must-have for fans of '80s nostalgia. --Bret Fetzer

The Two Coreys and a cheap price!.......2007-05-13
Came fast, good condition. Was good, haven't seen it since i was like 8 and you see a young Heather Gram. Which i never noticed before.
One of the funniest movie ever..STILL!.......2007-02-17
I watched this movie back in the 80's when I was a kid, and here it is 25 years later and this movie is still the funniest movie of all time. Surprisingly, I actually like most (I won't say all) of the movies the 2 Corey's did in the 80's, but I would say that "The Lost Boys" is my absolute favorite semi-horror flick, and "License to Drive" is my favorite comedy.
Good DVD, absence of subtitles in Language English........2007-01-14
The participation of Corey Haim is spectacular. The story is cool (good entertainment). The absence of subtitles in Language English and in other languages is lamentable.

License to Drive.......2006-11-13
Wow there are so many parts of this movie i just simply did not remember. But still a great movie, especially with the deleted scenes. They are not up to scratch but i am not holding it against afterall the movie is 18 years old. But still allot of fun to watch.
These two Corey's, definitely 80's teen idols!.......2006-08-24
This movie is totally an 80's flick, but non the less it always brings back feelings of nestalgia! It brings back memories of being that 16yr old that can't wait to get their license. Both Corey Haim and Corey Feldman are perfect for the role. Even though Corey Haim's character fails the written exam, this teen somehow prevails and the outcome is hilarious! And even though this movie is almost 18yrs old, all teen agers can relate to it! This movie is timeless!!

Reliving the early sixties!.......2007-05-12
I identify with this movie because I grew up at the same time and my two priorities were girls and cars or vice versa (come to think about it, that's still my two priorities!) I have owned a VHS version of Americian Graffitti for many years but I wanted a DVD version hoping that it will last many more years.
The original movie is hard to sequel so More American Graffitti didn't do a lot for me.
Great deal........2007-05-05
I would award 5 stars for the American Graffiti movie alone. It is well-presented here, and also includes some special features, including an informative "Making of.." documentary that features interviews with alot of the cast as well as those behind the camera. The movie is a classic, and is required viewing for any lover of fine movies.
But that's not all. The package also included the sequel to American Graffiti.. "More American Graffiti". This movie is not nearly the timeless classic as the original, but it is a great view for anyone who liked the first movie. Save for a few uninteresting plotlines involving the counter-culture in the 60's, the movie holds its own rather well. Milner's last race before his emminent death (this is not a spoiler, trust me) and Toad's tour in Vietnam are particularly worth viewing.
If you're willing to sacrifice not having the "Collector's Edition" of American Graffiti in exchange for having the sequel as well, then this is a great buy.
Beware of the extra charges on customs from usa ???.......2007-03-23
Every thing was great apart from I got a letter from the post office that i had to pay an extra £11.15 to get this item even thou i paid for all the post at time of ordering ... Which amazon didn't tell me .. ( i was not happy )
american graffiti/more american graffiti (drive-in double feature).......2007-03-12
both sides of this dvd skip so badly it is unwatchable.
unfortunatly i lost my receipt before viewing this piece of crap.
i would advise other customers to think twice before purchasing the franchise collection version of these two movies.

This conflicted teen comedy can't decide what it wants to be. Is Drive Me Crazy a mainstream piffle about a popular girl who turns her grungy next-door neighbor into a dream date? Or is it a sneaky critique of high school conformity? Melissa Joan Hart (TV's Sabrina, the Teenage Witch) is angling to get asked to an upcoming dance by a basketball star, but when her plans go awry, she turns to a childhood friend (Adrian Grenier from The Adventures of Sebastian Cole) in the hopes of avoiding total humiliation. Grenier wants to win back his recently lost girlfriend, so he agrees to Hart's total makeover plan to induce jealousy. Naturally, the scam turns into something sparky. Teen flicks always make things too glossy and upscale, but Drive Me Crazy somehow fumbles its design and ends up looking false and square. The movie initially presents Grenier's transformation as unqualified good, with no sense that anything he was doing before--political protests, alternative music, rebellious pranks--had any value. But as the plot unfolds, a few barbed twists undercut the good cheer, sneakily commenting on school spirit and popularity. These themes wrestle uncomfortably with the movie's production values, resulting in a curiously provocative jumble. This confusion is probably why the movie was only a modest success in theaters, but it's actually what makes Drive Me Crazy worth looking at now. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Opposites attract with irresistible force in this fresh, funny, feel-good comedy about two mismatched teens who scheme to make their ex's jealous. Melissa Joan Hart (TV's "Sabrina the Teenage Witch") is "picture perfect" (CBS-TV, Fort Worth) as a peppy preppy who performs the ultimate makeover on her scruffy next-door neighbor (Adrian Grenier) - and discovers this former "frog" was a prince all along! With a screenplay by Rob Thomas (Dawson's Creek), a cast featuring today's hottest young stars, plus the smash hit songs "Crazy" (Britney Spears), and "I Want It That Way" (Backstreet Boys), "Drive Me Crazy" is "worth celebrating!" (Detroit Free Press)
Customer Reviews:
corny but i loved it.......2007-02-23
i love this movie but i think it's good if you are a fan of one or more of the actors because i only watch it for adrian grenier.
A lark of Movie without thought.......2007-02-14
This movie is lively and fun but not much too it. If you need a movie that requires just a little thought this the movie for you. Plot is normal, acting is good.
Nice Teen Flick.......2006-08-18
Basically that's what this movie his. Their not bad actors, and even though the story could have been a little more explored, it's a nice sunday afternoon movie.
A new teen classic.......2005-10-27
The story is your typical preppy girl cleans up outcast to get Jock interested in her, but falls in love, and I know your thinking it's cliche and been done a million times and you are right! But aren't all of these teen comedies mundane? Sure they are! Enjoy them for what they are. Britney Spears sung a great song off of this soundtrack "You Drive Me Crazy" is a hit track.
Great acting.......2005-04-05
This movie is really well done. Each scene flows nicely into the next, the dialogs are perfect, and the caracters are adorable. Just watch it and enjoy.

Description

Customer Reviews:
The Duke Gives A Tough, Gruff...And..Touching Performance.......2007-05-10
From 1971,THE COWBOYS finds our guy,The Duke, as an aging rancher who must hire 11 young boys to help him on a 400 mile cattle drive. He's tough and gruff, but really has a way with the kids,(only The Duke can cure a boy's stuttering in less than 2 minutes!), and soon finds himself acting as both trail boss and father to the group. The drive is rough for all and has the added suspense of some bad hombres led by Bruce Dern who are out to rustle The Duke's cattle.
Wayne, who by this time, just awed us with his on screen presence, turns in a touching performance and if it was up to me, would have recieved an Oscar for this role. It's one of my all time favorite films. Dern is the baddest of the bad as he goes after our hero. The film is not short on talent, Directed by Mark Rydell, it includes Roscoe Lee Brown, a young A. Martinez, and a small but meaty part for the wonderful Colleen Dewhurst.
Important: This DVD is an "HD DVD" and per notice on product page... "is compatible only with HD DVD players." For a regular Region 1 edition you'll find it here:The Cowboyswith some very nice features(see my review of that edition for details. Also available, collectors of Wayne may find it more economical to purchaseThe John Wayne Collection (The Cowboys/The Searchers/Stagecoach) Spanning 30 years of his career, it's a wonderful selection.
