Description

Erik Larson's bestselling book The Devil in the White City introduced America to one of the most horrific but little-known episodes in our nation's criminal history. When the shocking exploits of the mysterious Dr. H. H. Holmes became known, U.S. tabloids dubbed him the American Jack the Ripper. H.H. HOLMES: AMERICA'S FIRST SERIAL KILLER is the first film to tell the entire true story of this grisly episode. H.H. HOLMES: AMERICA'S FIRST SERIAL KILLER focuses on Holmes' entire life of crime and villainy, from childhood to his death sentence and ultimate execution. Original photographs and newspaper reports of the period create a chilling authenticity, while actor Tony Jay (Time Bandits, Disney's Beauty and the Beast) provides spooky, insightful narration to enliven the proceedings.

4 out of 5 stars I wish it was 2 hrs.......2007-05-17

This was full of information. I rented this after having read The Devil In the White City and was hungry for more details about H.H. Holmes and this DVD did fill me in. However, it is almost impossible to adequately do so in such a short amount of time.

More details about finding the Pitezel girls in Canada, the condition of the bodies, etc. since they didn't explain it like they did in one of the books I read which made me despise him even more that he could do that.

I know this is probably ridiculous to ask but a computer generated image of what the castle looked like from the inside to get a better idea of the horrors within.

I know I am sounding like a ghoul, but it is such a unique case. In any event, it was nicely done and worth watching again and again.

1 out of 5 stars Holmes is an intersting character but not the 1st American serial killer.......2007-04-20

That the title states that H.H, Holmes is America's first serial killer indicates the lack of research the film crew did. I have read the H.H. Holmes book and am very familiar with his case. His level of deception and ability to move so fluidly and avoid the law is impressive. His torture chamber is also impressive. He is a Victorian Ted Bundy/Henry Lucas and Charlie Ng to various degrees. His success was based on a common thread to most serial killers- they feast on social upheaval and the subsequent displaced. The rocking 1960's/The Anarchist 70's or the movement of Americans from rural to urban at the turn of the century links all of these killers. Forgotten in the rush to "firstdom" is the Bender family of Cherryvale KS from 1871-1873. The Benders (Mother, Father, son and lovely daughter the spiritualist Kate) lured eleven men to their deaths for primarily economic gain although more ghastly deeds have been ascribed to them). They ran a modest boarding house to supply the western expansion in the post-civil war era. The Benders may not be the first in American history but they predate HH by more than a quarter century. They are unique even by modern standards for the fact that a seemingly cohesive family unit fully participated for an extended period of time. Shades of Sawney Bean in the Flint Hills. They were never caught as the son and Kate went to the Mexican border and Mr./Mrs Bender fled to St. Louis via Kansas City. Additionally the state of Kansas has erected a historical marker directing tourists to the Bender's infamy. I guess if Colorado can have their Donner Party and Missouri can eulogize Jesse James then Kansas can go on their Bender frenzy.

4 out of 5 stars An engrossing docu-film!.......2006-08-04

Being a bit of a "true crime buff," it's always nice to see a well-constructed documentary about the life of a serial killer. Although it's impossible to reveal every little detail in a 60 minute film, writer/director John Borowski jam packs this one with tons of thoroughly-researched information.
Wonderfully narrated by Tony Jay and featuring actual photographs, newspaper articles from the time, and re-enactment footage, this docu-film really gives you a sense of the late 1800's (when these crimes took place).
The story unfolds in an engrossing fashion and keeps you intrigued for the entire 64 minutes.
I found it fascinating to learn that there were many similarities in this case to those of more modern serial killers. Sure you've heard of Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, but have you heard of HH Holmes? Maybe not. But Holmes was first and it's great to see Borowski pull Holmes' story from out of the basement and reshare it with the world.
This is a well-made documentary film and a must-see for true crime buffs!

5 out of 5 stars Creepy, thrilling, and frightening!.......2006-07-29

I watched this last night. For a new documentary filmmaker, John Borowski, is somebody to watch out for. This coumentary reminds you of old black and white thriller films but with great narration and commentary by Harold Schechter who wrote depraved about Dr. H. Holmes born Herman Mudgett. The criminal profiler reminds me of a blonde Chris Parnell and the forensics person is quite vague but explains the lack of forensics science during that time. Dr. H. Holmes was a frightening man who killed, slaughtered, dismembered humans and sold their skeletons for profit. He was truly a genius at manipulating poor men like Benjamin Pitezel and his family who were his greatest casualties. He was the first serial killer to become so notorious by the end of one century on par with England's Jack the Ripper.

3 out of 5 stars Passable but lets its fascinating subject down.......2006-03-29

I read, with great enthusiasm, the book THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY, and afterwards stumbled across the existence of this DVD documentary about H.H. Holmes. I eagerly rented it, hoping for more tidbits about Holmes.

If you aren't familiar with the story, the main thing to know is that this Holmes character was first a great con artist who constructed, in 1890's Chicago, a huge three story building housing businesses on the first floor, rental rooms on the third, and apparently a maze of "killing rooms" and "torture rooms" on the 2nd floor, where he may have killed 50-100 people, mostly visitors to the Chicago World's Fair. This documentary serves a rudimentary introduction to this story...but the book gives far better details.

The documentary has some advantages...mostly the photos: we see photos of Holmes and some of his assciates and victims. We see some of the locations where key events took place.

But the disadvantages are pretty huge: there are lots of cheesy shots of a very poor theatrical set serving as a hallway in the "murder castle." Various actors wander around it looking confused or scared, while underneath the voice of the narrator tells us more about Holmes. THere are also very tedious shots of a map of the US with a superimposed stock video of a steam locomotive...indicating that Holmes was traveling. I certainly understand that there isn't a lot of archival footage from 1893, but these poorly conceived substitutes give the whole thing a cheesy feeling and are sometimes laughable. Also, the documentary does have some commentary from "experts" who include a couple of odd-fellows, one of whom wrote a book called "Depravity" about Holmes and others. He is clearly a guy who has no problem stating his opinions about Holmes as fact, and this video in turn lets us take them as fact. But worst of all, the video also takes some of Holmes' own writings about his childhood as fact...these tidbits are drawn for the autobiography Holmes wrote while in prison...trying to win public sympathy. He was a proven liar of the first order, and yet the film takes his descriptions as fact, offering no supporting information. This is dangerous.

I can only recommend the video to someone who is intriqued by Holmes and wants a sketchy idea of who he was in one hour flat. But for a worthwhile study of this man and the times that made his deeds possible...start with THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY...which also beautifully educates about the Chicago World's Fair, one of this country's most amazing accomplishments.

If the subject matter of H.H. Holmes weren't so interesting in and of itself, this video would only rate 2 stars at best.

Solid performances are the high point of this 2004 adaptation of L.A. prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's book about Charles Manson's Family, the Tate-La Bianca murders, and the subsequent trial that caught the world's attention in 1969. While the 1976 TV movie focused mainly on Bugliosi (here played by Bruno Kirby), writer-director John Gray turns his film's attention to cult member Linda Kasabian (a typically fine Clea DuVall), who eventually testified against Manson (a mannered Jeremy Davies) and his followers after they were arrested for several brutal murders, including actress Sharon Tate. Gray gets chilling turns from Allison Smith, Marguerite Moreau, and Mary Lynn Rajskub as "Manson Girls" Patricia Krenwinkle, Susan Atkins, and Squeaky Fromme, respectively, and the production is atmospherically photographed, but the dialogue is often ham-fisted, and rushes to an all-too-early conclusion (midway through the trial). The DVD offers the 180-minute film in a 1:78:1 anamorphic transfer, and includes a brace of deleted scenes (including some violent moments cut for TV broadcast), commentary by Gray and executive producer Mark L. Wolper, and footage of Davies in rehearsal. --Paul Gaita

Description

Jeremy Davies stars as convicted killer Charles Manson in this new television movie based on the true story of the August 1969 Tate/LaBianca murders, as chronicled in the bestselling book Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi. Almost 35 years ago Manson's followers, at his instruction, brutally massacred seven people over two consecutive nights in Los Angeles and scrawled bloody messages on the walls of the crime scenes. The first night, director Roman Polanski's wife, eight-month-pregnant actress Sharon Tate, was murdered along with coffee heiress Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring, Voytek Frykowski and Steven Parent. The second night, supermarket chain president Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, were found stabbed to death in their home.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars intelligently written and directed.......2007-06-02

Way better than the 1976 tv version, in fact, superior in every way--with the exception of Railsback's take
on Manson. Pretty damn gruesome, by the way. The actress who portrays Linda Kasabian is very good here.

Writer/director John Gray does fine work. Am glad they showed what they showed of the courtroom scenes--because not only were they dull and went on too long in the '76 flick, but we already know what the verdict was and what happened.

2 out of 5 stars Not better then the 1976 version but it ain't THAT bad either!.......2006-11-22

What is missing in the 2006 version of this film is the creepiness that the 1976 version had.

First off the guy who played Manson did a good job. I give him that.

The girl who played Sadie I wanted to smack the smirk off her face.

Where was the court scene? There was no court scene. In the 1976 version those court scenes were magic.

Also the scene where Sharon, Voytek, Steven, Abigail, Leno and Rosemary (The victims) were a bit too graphic for me. I almost threw up seeing Abigail getting stabbed to death. I couldn't bare seeing the Sharon character getting killed.

It's an OK movie but not beter then the 76' version.

4 out of 5 stars The other side of the mountain.......2006-11-03

If you saw the original, this DVD shows you the other side. It completes it all.

4 out of 5 stars It doesn`t surpass the 1976 outing, but..........2006-09-23

still this product shows us the brutality of Manson first hand. In 1976, the tv-film gave us a chilling insight into intelligent madness - yup who can deny that the brain of Manson in not unlike Hitler; mad, but with vision and control of the environment.....

In this version we get to know the victims... they`re no longer just names and figures... The last scene in which Sharon whispers "Cut the baby" to Susan Atkins never happened, but she d i d try to negotiate with her killers; "take me with you, let me have my baby and then kill me" and "can you remove the baby from the womb" when she realised there was no hope...

This is a trashy account of the story and it SUCCEEDS in showing us that the kilings were not some sort of great ritualistic thing as been presented over the years.... But this was a total senseless massacre and THAT`s why this film succeeds; it speaks volumes why not the killers should ever be released.

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good version of this crime.......2006-07-14

The 2004 made-for-TV version of "Helter Skelter" certainly received harsh treatment from both professional and amateur critics alike. This is not particularly surprising, considering the ghoulish subject manner and the intense sensibilities in relation to this legendary crime. Going into this film my expectations were low. While watching the DVD version, which included a variety of violent scenes not shown during its original TV broadcast, I was surprised to discover this was a quality production.

This new perspective of "Helter Skelter" is probably the best film ever made about this lurid tale, and Jeremy Davies' thoughtful performance as Charles Manson comes about as close to the truth as we are ever going to get. For the most part, the filmmakers had their facts straight. I rolled my eyes throughout several miscalculations, most notably the elimination of the murder of Spahn Ranch employee Shorty Shea. Granted, there's only a certain amount of information this film could pack into its busy two-plus hours running time, but Shorty was a known victim of this hippie-creepy cult - a human being murdered in the dead of night. If you're going to tell this story yet again (and the question as to whether it was necessary would require an entirely new post), don't eliminate victims simply to create a prime time package for mass consumption.

In addition, the meeting of Charles Manson and Sharon Tate is disputed to this day. While Manson most definitely visited the Tate property prior to the murders, the filmmakers' choice to have them meet eye-to-eye was tacky. That being said, there was an honest attempt by the filmmakers to portray the conditions that led this family of psychotic youths to commit such horrible murders in 1969.

"Helter Skelter" was not gritty enough for my taste, as the Spahn Ranch commune was far more picturesque than the horse fly-covered, greasy-haired reality. Manson and his clan are portrayed as humans rather than demons, and I suppose if we are going to understand this subject matter, this difficult truth should be emphasized.

Casting Clea DuVall as the controversial Linda Kasabian was an excellent move. Not only is DuVall one of the finest actresses of her generation (and her performance rivals Davies'), but Kasabian was just about the only member of Manson's Family to show remorse following the murders. If you are going to find a single glimmer of hope in this tawdry epic, Kasabian is about as close as you are going to get to sunshine.

"Helter Skelter" essentially follows her journey as a member of Manson's Family, from introduction to drug-induced indoctrination, eventually leading to the nights of murder. Historically, Kasabian left the Manson clan soon after the crimes, was arrested and became one of the few members to give testimony during the grueling trials.

The original "Helter Skelter" (1976) has always been a bit overrated, with Steve Railsback giving an over-the-top, circus-like performance as Manson. The film emphasized the investigation and devoted a couple of hours to the trial itself. This new version is a companion film, if you will, detailing the year leading up to the arrests and trial, abruptly ending about the time Kasabian decides she will testify, thus insuring the killers will be convicted.

The Tate and LaBianca murders are portrayed more-or-less realistically. There's really nothing shown TV viewers do not witness on the "CSI" and "Criminal Minds" programs. But these atrocities actually took place, and perhaps that haunting fact makes for uncomfortable viewing. I certainly wanted to turn my eyes away, and was disturbed by the amount of blood shown. This is absolutely R-rated subject matter, but prime time crime produces high ratings. So who am I to question modern-day TV sensibilities?

When reading about the Manson crimes - books which are equal parts fascinating and repulsive - one almost always asks "Why?" This new film version of "Helter Skelter," factually close to the truth, with better performances and production values than this subject deserves, attempts to answer nagging questions. It succeeds far better than one would expect.

What ever you do, don't buy this even if the price drops down
to two pennies. If there was a ZERO to rate this movie I give
it one. This is a fine sample of false advertisement. They
put the cover of Donnie Yen in a most muscular pose, making the
consumer think they're going to see an spectacular Shaolin temple fight. This movie doesn't even show Kung Fu or any
type of martial arts. This is outrageous! I was going to ask
for a refund but sending the movie back would cost more then
what it's worth. The story is a rediculous cop story with no
Shaolin fighting what so ever. As a matter fact this is one
of Donnie Yen's very first movies, He looks like a nerd!
real skinny wearing glasses! When was this movie shot? in the
early eighties? Don't expect to see the Donnie Yen in the
false advertisement cover of this Movie. Or the Donnie Yen
from "Iron Monkey" or "Fist of Fury" - This movie,"Fist of Fury" is a remake of the late Bruce Lee "Chinese Conection" by Donnie Yen, this movie is the one to own! Get "Fist of Fury" by Donnie Yen. He is in the best shape of his life. The action is nonstop from begining to end. No wire work here, except for some fast forward on some scenes to make him look speedier then Bruce. Shaolin vs Devil's Omen, if they offered it free I
wouldn't take it! The space on my shelf is worth more.
So Halloween movie hunters, BEWARE!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible !!!!!!! .......2007-03-09

Thank goodness that I didn't buy this DVD. I was able to take it out of the library for free! This was the worst film about a serial killer that I have ever seen. That is if you can actually see whats happening on screen with some of the worst lighting in movie history. It appears that the director liked the FX from the film " Jacobs Ladder" so much that he decided to use it in every single scene. DO NOT BUY THIS!

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting treatment of the Night Stalker story.......2007-01-09

Has little to do with the real history of the case, but the actor looks a LOT like RR. Voice not deep enough. RR did not kill Hispanics. The creative editing is very good. Music too modern. Killings were in the 80's. I liked it as a fantasy spin off on the Night Stalker legend. Amazon was great in quickly sending the product in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars innovative, powerful, original -- true crime told as horror film/religious parable........2006-12-19

As other reviewers have noted, NIGHTSTALKER doesn't follow the Richard Ramirez serial killer facts too closely. But that's not what this film is about.

This is history told as a horror film. Indeed, as a religious parable.

We see Ramirez's killings through his own eyes. He stalks and kills his victims while an albino Satan with a blood-stained mouth flashes about him, head shaking quickly. Ramirez himself flashes about the scene. It's a series of killings seen through the eyes of an insane drug addict. It sets the mood of Evil. It works.

(Although the fast head shaking was first used in JACOB'S LADDER, it may be that this film's albino Satan later inspired THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.)

Evil is the theme, to the point of religious parable. Ramirez not only sees Satan, he orders his victims, "Say you love Satan!" He tells Satan, "I did it for you!" Naturally, his apartment abounds in upturned pentagrams, written in blood.

Ramirez's nemesis is Rosalyn Sanchez, who plays an East L.A. cop--who's also a devout Catholic. She prays ferverently every night, the camera hovering in extreme closeup about her quivering lips, her tightly clutched rosary, focusing in and out at the aged crucifx she prays before.

Sanchez (Detective Martinez) is surrounded by encroaching evil. Her black police lieutanent boss sexually harrasses her. His head shakes quickly (as does Satan's head), thus linking him to Evil. Sanchez's Latino partner snorts coke in the squad car, his head shaking quickly. Sanchez's white partner turns vigilante, his head shaking quickly. The Evil is everywhere, in all races.

All three men behave in a mostly decent (if roughshod) manner throughout the film. None of their indescretions are followed up plotwise. Rather, the Evil just lurks there, surfacing on occassion, but always beneath the surface of those Sanchez might trust.

The Evil lurks in women too. Sanchez is betrayed by a gal reporter, who uses Sanchez as a source, then breaks confidence, exposing Sanchez as her source. Sanchez had given a police sketch of Ramirez to the reporter, hoping it would save lives. Sanchez's motives were pure, but the reporter didn't care about saving lives, only making a name for herself; exposing Sanchez saved no one, but made the story juicier. The reporter also snorts coke, her head shaking quickly.

Sanchez has other problems. Her aging mother is senile, a burden on Sanchez, who's turned down better job offers to stay in East L.A. and care for her mother. These problems are additional crosses for Sanchez to bear as she prays to Jesus.

The Evil is everywhere. The film is set in 1985, and TV sets throughout the film carry newscasts of crises in the mideast, the poison plant leakage in India, US support of Iraq, and the Ramirez killings.

No, this is not a "true crime" film. It's shot in the aesthetic style of a horror film, and it's about a devoutly Catholic woman seeking divine help in her fight against Evil. Sanchez is the moral core of this darkening universe as Evil encroches on her from all directions.

I can see that many true crime fans were disappointed. I don't think horror fans would be upset. The cinematography is beautiful. (And yes, so is Sanchez.)

2 out of 5 stars Bummer..............2006-03-19

Based on the true story of serial killer Robert Ramirez, Nightstalker falls way short of truly providing us the real accounts of Ramirez and his murder spree. Even with crazy special effects that make you wonder if there is something wrong with your DVD player, this movie is just plain weird. The acting isn't bad and I've seen much worse movies so that's the reason for my 2 star rating. I just wish this movie would have given us more details of the man himself. It fails to deliver a true story like movies such as Ted Bundy, Dahmer, Ed Gein and Gacy. I was disappointed with this film.

1 out of 5 stars the nightstalker movie review.......2006-02-22

THIS WAS ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES ON A SERIAL KILLER THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. THE ONLY TRUE FACT ABOUT THIS MOVIE WAS THAT HE WAS A DRUG USER. I hate to say it but it almost seems possible that Godfrey Ho could have helped this movie out. He could have put in some super stupid stuff that would at least have gotten a smile out of me. Robert Tai directs this and it seems to just be a movie they shot in a day or 2 while they were filming good movies like 'Secret Rivals 3' and 'Incredible Kung Fu Mission' and even the wonderfully bad 'Shaolin Vs. Ninja'. You have the entire cast from those movies, and even a couple of new faces that are nice to see. Lo Rei shows up at the end of the movie and only has 1 fight scene other than the finale. And what an unspectacular finale it was. I would go over all the names but it is sad to see them all in such a poor movie. Even Wong Chi-Sang makes his patented cameo appearence along with the young muscled up monk who tells Lo Rei and William Yen they can't watch the monks practice in 'Shaolin Vs. Lama'. The names are endless. Now the kung fu is not bad, not too slow or anything, but just like the rest of the movie they put no creativity and nothing new into it. By far the worst movie I have ever seen from the great Robert Tai(Tai Cher) but hopefully it remains the worst. Even Fist of Legends 2 I found to be a better movie than this. Very sad.

Picture quality is full screened but you can still tell that by the camera job that this movie was a super rushed job and while it would have helped to have the movie widescreened it would have pointed out the flaws of the movie even more. Sadly, I can't blame Video Asia for ruining this movie.

Also included is a very good interview with Hsiou Ho and a brief demonstration of some monkey kung fu from the VERY young looking old scool star.

5 out of 5 stars A dark, sick, twisted comedy.......2006-10-12

Dead Body Man is probably the most sickest, twisted, dark comedy I have ever seen. The 4th Floor guys pull out all the stops and push the envelope as far as they can. It's one of those flims that you cannot take seriously. Eddie Benevich (Willie, the film's anti-hero) shines in the role..and you don't know wether you should hate him or feel bad for him. It's a really clever indie film gem that shouldn't be overlooked. Pick this up to tide yourself over till the much anticipated sequel, Dead Body Man 2 : Seperation Anxiety is released! Essential viewing!!!

      5 out of 5 stars FUNNY SH*T.......2006-03-15

This movie was cRaZy in a good way. There was definetely a method behind it's madness. It was a unique story with some hilarious scenes. My favorite was the group session. Having a group of serial killers gathered together to talk about their problems definetley gets you thinking. Keep up the good work 4th Floor!

1 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype! This is total garbage!.......2006-02-08

Dead Body Man is one of the worst films I've ever seen. Period. Bad acting, total lack of plot and endless torture of women (the director obviously has trouble with females), makes this a total mess and a waste of time. It's not funny, witty or remotely enjoyable and feels like a fetish film masquerading as horror. And what's up with that Freddy Krueger sweater guys? Cmon! If you like movies that have a budget of the price of the videotape it was filmed on or have a thing for ninth grade dialog and teen boy fantasies of rape and torture, than this is the movie for you. the content is not offensive but the execution of it is. Pure crap.

5 out of 5 stars A DARK AND HUMOROUS TALE.......2005-12-28

Horror movies being my favorite genre, dark comedies follow right after. Mainstream flicks lack the guts that indy flicks like Dead Body Man offer up. I don't mean just plain blood and gore guts, but I mean content guts. This flick takes dark comedy/horror to whole new level thats not afraid to throw punches at just about anything. This movie succeeds by interweaving a complex tale of psychological angst while painting a canvas of richly textured characters that will not only disturb you, but make you land on your a#* laughing and questioning your own sanity at finding the subject matter funny. That's the beauty of this flick. It doesn't take itself seriously, yet it's magnificently designed to entertain the hell out you and doesn't worry about who it might offend.

      5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2005-12-12

If your tired of the same boring horror flick and want something exciting and new...
then this is the movie for you!
Dead Body Man offers a refreshing twist in Horror!!! The movie keeps you wanting more...on the edge of the couch dying to see what is going to happen next....let's just say it involved group meetings, chickens, as well as ho's and selling meat!!
I can only hope the demented 4th Floor Pictures is going to offer a sequel!!! This movie is GREAT!!
