Undercover C.I.A. agent Sonni Griffith (Wesley Snipes) travels alone to Poland to expose an arms dealer and stop the sale of a nuclear weapon. When the arms dealer is tipped off to Griffith's identity, he lands himself in prison...but is quickly released by the C.I.A. only to be given a new mission: to escort a beautiful Russian woman, Nadia, back to the United States. Griffith soon learns that strong-willed Nadia is being hunted by the very arms dealer that he intended to destroy, but this evil dealer will stop at nothing to get the information out of Nadia that he needs - the location of the $30 million dollars she has hidden that will buy him a nuclear bomb. As the leak within the C.I.A. continues to expose the location and identity of Griffith and Nadia, they must fight the arms dealers to the death to save themselves and the world.

Yet Another B-Action Starring Wesley Snipes: Dull and Disappointing .......2007-02-01
Wesley Snipes plays an undercover CIA agent in Romania. Pitted against this perpetually angry hero (whose emotions are delivered with bland voice-over) is a sexy and strong-willed Russian beauty played by Silvia Colloca. Snipes must protect Colloca going back to USA from the attacks of the villains of this country, whose motives I'm still trying to figure out.
There is no denying that this is a low-budget action film made in Romania, kind of film you watch for shoot-outs and explosions. To their credits, the stunt persons of the film did a decent job and in one memorable scene a baddie falls out of the window (of the second floor of a house) and falls onto the roof of a van below, hitting his head against it really hard and bouncing like a rubber ball. That is amazing. And don't forget the cat-and-mouse chase scene in the subway where a bald-headed baddie shows one surprising stunt.
But the rest of the film is very dull. "The Detonator" uses every clichéd element of action genre taken directly from other better films, and throws them into the convoluted narrative in the wrong way. The film attempts to be different with a portrait of a gangster who owns a soccer team and several scenes about soccer games. However, it just doesn't work because of the tepid descriptions of games and banal action sequences mixed with them.
It was in 2004 when we saw the third entry of `The Blade' which was not bad. But now Wesley Snipes seems to have officially joined in the direct-to-video land where Steven Seagal is the king or the Great One. (In fact `The Detonator' is co-produced by Andrew Stevens who is also responsible for such films as "Half Past Dead" "The Foreigner" and "Out of Reach.") I'm not saying that all straight-to-video actions are bad - remember Dolph Lundgren who is doing a very good job as star and director. - but as to `The Detonator" the result is simply disappointing.
Haven't I Seen This Film Before?.......2006-06-13
Suggestion. Instead of buying or renting 'The Detonator' from '06 why not watch Wesley's earlier '00 film 'The Art of War' instead. Why you ask? Why because it's virtually the same movie that's why. Oh there are a few differences, Wesley Snipes is now a C.I.A. agent instead of a U.N. agent, he's in Poland instead of New York and the beautiful woman he's protecting this time is Russian instead of Chinese. Other than that it's EXACTLY THE SAME! 'Detonator' Director Po-Chih Leong even had the nerve to copy the supposedly surprise ending used by Christian Duguay in 'The Art of War.'
Positives: Silvia Colloca adds some feminine charm to an otherwise dreary film and Matthew Leitch is excellent as tough guy Dimitri.
'The Art of War' is a very good movie, 'The Detonator' isn't. Trust me on this one.
AS EXPLOSIVE AS THE SNEEZE OF A SQUIRREL.......2006-05-28
When I was watching this movie, I found myself going through a mental list of what I needed to do the next day, what we were going to have for breakfast the next morning and hoping this movie would end soon. Wesley Snipes is about exciting as watching the rinse cycle on a washing machine, the plot is so convoluted and incoherent, and the action sequences look like they came out of a movie catalogue. Ho hum, indeed.
just a humble suggestion from me:.......2006-05-16
stay away from all the movies from wesley snipes' and steven seagal's. they are brain-dead movies with brain-dead screenplays, bad directors, bad everythings. this movie, like other viewers' said, drove me nuts. i have to wear straight jacket to refrain myself everytime when i watched these two guys' movies, otherwise i might have crashed my tv set or trashed everything around me in order to vant my frustration. amazon.com should also stay away from selling this crappy movie. god help us.
I kept watching: I didnt know they could make movies this bad........2006-04-30
This film is so awful it will keep you watching just to see if it can get any worse. It has the feel of a cheap documentary, from the first scene it is clear that the budget is almost non existent.
It seems like they rented a couple of apartments in Bucharest and decided to make a home video. Snipes is awful, his character is some ex-CIA operative who has everyone against him the only way forward is to break out those quick fire martial arts moves the we know and love. To make matters worse Snipes does Bugsy Malone style narration that makes the movie even more hilarious. One expects decent action from Snipes and to be honest there are some good action scenes and something to look out for is the ridiculous damage done to some of the bad guys, I am convinced some of the stuntmen suffered injuries because some stunts look clearly unsafe and would never been allowed to be performed in Hollywood becuase of the lack of safety.
Let's hope Snipes avoids these type of films in the future.

Originally released in 1991, the three-part OAV Detonator Orgun plays like a mixture of several popular sci-fi films. Tomoru, a teenage boy in the 24th century, is haunted by weird dreams partially based on the computer games he plays with his friends. He soon discovers he's telepathically linked to the mysterious mecha Orgun. Meanwhile, at the Earth Defense Force Intelligence Headquarters, Dr. Michi Kanzaki and supercomputer I-Zak decrypt a message from deep space that turns out to be the blueprint for Orgun's physical being. As they make these discoveries, an advanced race of aliens nears the Earth with plans to destroy it. Naturally only the combination of Tomoru, Kanzaki, and Orgun can defeat them. Director Masami Obari (Fatal Fury) handles the action sequences, space battles, and fist fights between giant robots with his usual skill. He's less successful at presenting Hideki Kakinuma's convoluted story, a needlessly complicated mixture of flashbacks, fantasies, quasi-religious mysticism, and warnings about the dangers of tampering with human evolution that is simultaneously too complicated and too simple for its two-and-a-half-hour length. There also seem to be problems with the translation: although Tomoru sees himself as a World War I-style pilot in his fantasies, he refers to his leather jacket as a "Luftwaffer uniform" (the Luftwaffe was the German air corps in World War II). Unrated; suitable for ages 14 and up: nudity, profanity, and violence, largely restricted to robot versus robot conflicts. --Charles Solomon
Description
From the Director of Bubblegum Crisis, in the two-fisted tradition of Ultraman. If it weren't for the horrific dreams, Tomonu would be having the time of his life cutting classes and playing video games. But an alien intelligence has invaded his mind and is about to plunge him into an interstellar war. Battleships are headed for Earth and Tomoru's psychic link is humanity's only hope!

Just Short of Greatness.......2007-06-30
Detonator Orgun is a 3 part OAV series that has a bit of magic to it. An 80's style sci-fi story that shows up late to the party in 1991, it feels both nostalgic and polished. It features an evocative portrayal of a utopian future, fueled by technology, that also looks longingly to the past. While the story is a little too familiar, a little too adolescent, and the main character is too much of a martyr-hero, it's far from void of merit. While it anticipates series like Neon Genesis Evangelion only a few year later, Detonator Orgun stands on it's own as a well executed classic anime sci-fi. Whether it's the skillful treatment by AIC, or the beautiful character designs by Kiya Asamiya (under his pen name), or just the quality of the story, it feels right...yet it falls short of greatness. I think the thing holding it back the most is that it's the same conflict/resolution as Macross: Do You Remember Love (the movie adaption of Macross). No matter how nostalgic it feels, how delicately it's presented, how polished the designs are, or how much it feels right, it loses everything it has going for it by sharing too much with a classic that surpassed it on every level so many years previous to it. Detonator Orgun is a would-be classic, overshadowed by it's betters.
Eat your heart out Mega Man.......2005-08-01
The only thing I understand about this movie is Tomonu is a teen boy who is haunted in his dream's that is based on a video game he plays with his friends. And that's it, I don't have a clue of what a Orgun is. The movie is great it is like Gundam getting into 16 up rating anime's.
Wow.......2005-06-18
Im sure many will hate my review but as an anime fan and I don't mean a NEW fan of like "sailor moon" and "pokemon" stuff I mean anime as in "Akira", "Bubblegum Crisis" etc..
I sat down to watch this show but just couldnt get into it, the characters seem so boring and the story just lags on and on. The mecha in the show is "ok" but nothing mind blowing for old fans or new fans. The truth is weve all seen the mecha anime over and over again, some good some bad. This one isn't really "bad" but more "boring". The story trudges along (through the mire I might add) and even the ending is quite lackluster. Harsh? yes but the reason is with SO many old school and new animes this one just doesn't stand out as "classic" or "breakthrough" in ANY way...if you are a completist anime collector than you wont even be reading this but if your a casual fan or someone who sets higher standards you'll see what I mean. Sure its ONLY an "opinion" but the truth is, opinions are what help us decide whether to invest money into something. Bottom line, yes I think this show was a waste of money and time but I'm sure there are SOME fans of the show as you can see from some of the reviews here! Take a chance on the show at your own risk, I say rent it first!
Classic anime OVA at it's best! A piece of history!.......2005-01-16
Detonator Orgun originally came out in Japan in 1991, but didn't hit American or Canadian shores until 1993 on VHS and such. With this OVA series out on DVD, and in this re-release DVD, fans of the 1990s OVA blow out can enjoy this classic series in fine detail and enjoy EVERY minute of it!
(...).
Detonator Orgun is also an anime trying to tell the benefits of what it is to be a human being, and the power of the human soul, not wanting to give up, and keep going on. Some may call it cliched, but I personally love every minute of it. The pacing is well done, with time for great plot development, and great action sequences. The original japanese voice actors play their characters VERY WELL, and I can't find any faults. The dubbing is ok, being 1990s quality. You'll either like the dub or not, or get used to it over time. The music is addicting, especially since the ending themes are performed by Susumu Harisawa, also famous for performing songs for the Berserk anime series.
The video quality on the DVD is VERY good, considering this OVA is now over 10 years old. I didn't notice any breaks ups or of the like, so there is nothing to complain about. The animation is fanstatic for it's time, but then again, most OVAs have more money to spend than a whole anime series.
Of course, Detonator Orgun has had it's own bit of contriversy. For those who remember the Tekkaman-Blade series(Teknoman for the english version), both Orgun and Tekkaman-Blade himself look very, VERY similar. From the large should armor, the head spikes, covered eyes, and armored body. Both use a doubled bladed lance, although Orgun doesn't actually use it till the last episode. I doubt either show was trying to rip off the other, but it's also hard to tell if one is trying to be a dedication to the other. In the long run, I don't really compare unless I want to make a note of it for fun and good humor.
But in the long run, this is an excellent must have OVA, and should NOT be missed! Any fan of anime who enjoys mecha combat, great story telling, great characters, and great music, WILL enjoy Detonator Orgun.
Best OVA!!!!! I Have Yet To See One Better........2003-09-14
Last year I went to an anime store to rent some anime. They had one of those rent two get two free special deals and I couldn't resist. I didn't know about this OVA (Original Video Animation, its not a series, nor a movie, it has a budget somewhere in between and its made specifically for the home video market, usually going straight to release.), I noticed it because of the character of Orgun in the front cover, a mechanoid that reminded me much of the Teknoman Slade from the 1992 show or as he's known in much of the rest of the world Tekkaman Blade.
Anyways I wasn't too interested until I read the back of the DVD case, and I learned about this great sci-fi story. When I saw the first part of it I was blown away.
Detonator Orgun at brief glance may seem similar in appearance to both the original 1975 Tekkaman incarnation and its 1992 remake, but this 1991 OVA has a whole other dimension to it that the others lack, by separating itself from them with its more realistic characters, more complicated themes, and its darker atmosphere. This is exemplified by Orgun's search for morality. Much like the Marvel Comics superhero Silver Surfer, who was brainwashed by the cosmic being Galactus and transformed into his herald reborn to fulfill the duty to search and find worlds teeming with intelligent life in order to satisfy his master's hunger, Orgun willingly led his kind, the Evoluder, to worlds to conquer and then consume with their death planet. Like his precursor, the Silver Surfer, Orgun has a continual regret for his actions and a longing for something that was lost to him, morality, even while fulfilling the grand destiny his God, Lord Zoa has given to him. Without morality Orgun feels incomplete and eventually the desire for that lost ideal is so great that it causes him to rebel against his own people and everything he ever believed in. However there is much more depth to this anime than just the quest for morality.
While in our western culture its all about the Western Judeo Christian ideas of good versus evil, the Eastern Hindu Buddhist culture expressed in many anime is all about the balance at the core of everything, there are no good or evil characters for everyone is capable of both, there are only people with a balanced yin and yang and people with an imbalance within. Such a dichotomy between two ways of thinking is interesting to look at; you might notice it in this anime.

Two U.N. anti-crime agents try to stop a hijacked train from reaching Iraq. Based on the book Death Train by Alistair MacLean.
Customer Reviews:
Detonator is a dud.......2006-08-30
Patrick Stewart is in charge of a special unit within the United Nations. He enlists the help of Pierce Brosnan, an old friend who apparently owes him one last favor, to go after a Russian general played by Christopher Lee. Lee has had a German scientist build two nuclear bombs. His purpose is to get them to Iraq and detonate them so the Russian military can come in and easily take over the region, thus restoring Russia to world prominence. His henchmen, led by Ted Levine, take over a train in Germany to transport the bombs. It all sounds slightly better than it plays out.
There are a lot of good actors in this movie cashing a paycheck. They can't do much with the poor dialogue and badly constructed scenes. Being an action movie, there is plenty of shooting and plenty of no one hitting the broad side of a barn. Several attempts at stopping the train fail, leading to hostages being shot. Overall, Detonator is pretty tepid. Not the worst movie you'll ever see, but I don't think its too high on the resume of anyone involved.
Detonator OR is it just Det-On-Actor.......2005-08-29
The movie is full of action of guns, shooting, and suspense, yet it lacks the feel of a good action movie. Of general feeling, it could have been made better. Why would I write - Det-On Actor becuase it was just that Det-On of Acting of
Patrick Stewart and Bronson. Everthing was predictiable and of course nothing worked to stop the train till the end of the movie. I would rather wait till you can rent it than buy it and spend the money.
Boring.......2005-03-01
The Detonator was quite possibly the worst movie that I have ever had the unfortunate oppurtunity to watch. Not to mention the most dullest. The acting was horrible, the dialoge weak, and everyone ran around like a chicken with its head cut off. I found myself rooting for Christpher Lee just to pull the plug, and explode the darn bomb.
Nothing went right, and the entire experience made you come away with the feeling that you could have done a better job, had the director merely handed the script over. Do yourself a favor, and don't even bother renting this movie, the time spent over it is definatly not a good way to spend those precious minutes of your life.
Supenseful and well acted.......2004-10-20
The cast elevates this 3-star movie to 4 stars. Patrick Stewart, always a tour de force in the acting department, takes command of his role as the intelligent operations manager/mediator who nonetheless underestimates his opponent. Pierce Brosnan, who always brings a human vulnerability to his heroism, slips into James Bond mode. Alexandra Paul does a credible job of portraying a sharpshooter whose raw determination is matched by her female intuition. Ted Levine is flawless as the cocky mercenary. And Christopher Lee nails his role as the Russian evildoer. The performance of these actors is not wasted. The film is intelligent and suspenseful. I cannot fault the direction or camerawork. The soundtrack is understated, so that the film is more "real world" than "dramatic." DETONATOR is a good film, and its solid cast of actors makes it worth a repeat viewing.
DECENT EXCUSE FOR SOME POPCORN .......2004-09-11
I saw the movie under the TV name of "Death Train". Pierce Brosnan and Patrick Stewart drew me to it, as did the espionage + action thriller theme, although I'm still unsure if an entity called United Nations Anti Crime Unit is simply a Hollywood contraption.
Some plutonium has been stolen from a German nuclear reactor station and being carried via a hijacked train, which sets off a wild goose chase for who the REAL thief is and what the ulterior motives + destination are. We're told about these perpetrators and their intentions about 75% into the film (let me not spoil it) but the action on/off the train to stop it in its tracks before detonation, is fairly engaging. The negotiation moments are superbly done.
Pierce Brosnan was perhaps fresh off Remington Steele so he has a suitably sharp female colleague to woo and wheedle. If people were scouting for a new James Bond circa 1993, I can totally see why Brosnan came up well reviewed.
A very watchable, well-made popcorn thriller.

Detonator.......2007-01-07
This movie is pretty good for a sequel, in fact I believe his performance in this role promoted him to become 007.
Future eye-candy spotted.......2003-07-07
The only reason to rent this C-grade telemovie is the 30-second appearance of future "ER" doc, Goran Visnjic, who only utters two lines, but bucks the trend of his film appearances by not getting himself killed in the process.
Otherwise, it's a routine action thriller, with lots of guns, explosions, evening gowns, chases, and bad acting aplenty.
A disappointing sequel.......2000-02-17
I felt this was a big disappointment compared to the first one (Detonator). While the chemistry between Mike Graham (Pierce Brosnan) and Sabrina Carver (Alexandra Paul) is evident, the script was poorly written and I felt that this movie was just thrown in together. It was not a very suspenseful movie, and some of the acting is pretty atrocious, especially by the characters in Hong Kong. The first Detonator was very well-written, well-directed, and well-acted with great actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ted Levine, and Christopher Lee, but I could not believe that the same director was responsible for this sequel. I would definitely stick with the first Detonator.
Nightwatch is the awesomest made for TV movie.......1999-07-27
Of all the made for TV movies I have ever seen (This one was made for USA as a USA network original) this has got to be the best one. It is a great story which is 10 times better than the 1st. This movie is a must for action adventure lovers. If anyone can answer my question as to why the title was changed from "Allistair MacLean's Nightwatch" for TV to "Detonator 2: Nightwatch" for video release, please email me.
Pierce as Mike Graham again. Only with long hair........1999-06-04
I brought this video from you. You saved me some money on it.
Here is the Bond man again as Mike Graham.
In this one you see a mutual chemistry between Graham and Sabrina.
He orders vodka martini, straight up with a twist.
This one could have been longer too.
It was unusual seeing Pierce with long hair, but you get the feeling by the opening that he just got back from this mission before they send him off to help Sabrina on a mission, and he just didn't have time for a hair cut and shave.
Anyway, he still looks great to me.

Such a dichotomy between two ways of thinking is interesting to look at; you might notice it in this anime.

you have got to be kidding me!.......2004-08-28
I bought this movie in blockbuster for $7.99 I thought why not? It sounded good and any movie with explosions I love. Ok turn the movie on and as soon as I see the first explosion I turned it off! why? because the explosion is from the movie End Of Days when the restaraunt explodes. Excatly the same thing. Then i just skimmed through it and there was another explosion when a building explodes and a man jumps through a window. That was taken from The Glimmer Man! if your going to direct a movie USE YOUR OWN EXPLOSIONS!! Dont take it from other movies. Even if you use computer generated ones. It is still better then taking them from other movies!
Now as far as the acting goes it was dreadful! Randalf Batinkoff cannot act! I had never heard of him before, but Im glad I didnt. Bokeem Woodbine is in this. He was in The Breed, and Snipper 2. Now the breed he was ok. But in this movie he stinks. He really cannot act. If your looking for an actor look else where. Elizabeth Berkley I think is a good actress. Anything she does is good. Not oscar worthy, but not bad either!
I think the budget was 5-6 million dollars which is not a lot at all! The acting was poor. Production was horrible and the fact they stole explosions made it even worse! If your looking for thriller with explosions look at face off or any good movies.
Ridiculous.......2003-11-08
Just finished watching the movie and didn't like it.
The ending is okay, but in my opinion, the acting is overplayed
and artificial. The dialog is annoying. Didn't like the casting.
Stan Shaw looks ridiculous in Robert Brickland's role. The explosions and shooting scenes look absurd, and in general, most of it's parts we have seen in a lot of other Hollowood movies. My advice: skip this one. There are better action movies out there.
