5 out of 5 stars Great for Tom Hanks Fans.......2007-05-19

This is a great DVD. 3 great movies on one DVD and one great price.
2 out of 3 of these are at the top of my favorites list, and no matter
how many times I've seen them I still enjoy them.

The Money Pit. Anyone who has bought an older home and discovered what
a fixer upper is or leads to, can really relate to this movie. They can
probably relate to everything except having the money to do such a fixup, and hopefully most people have not had relationships with someone as shallow and conceited as the meistro, the wife's former boyfriend.

Next comes The Burbs. What happens when you don't know how to take a
vacation anymore and all your friends also have lost that ability and do not know what to do with themselves!

The answer, Become your own Neighborhood Watch group.
Just hope that you don't have neighbors like the Klopaks.

Lastly Dragnet, where Tom teams up with Dan Aykroid as Joe Friday's son.
A great comic redo of a show that maybe was a little too serious, a
little tongue in cheek, and yet had everyone watching.

For a few good nights of something to give you a laugh and let you know
things could always be worse, pick up this DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-15

I bought this trio because i love the burbs. I enjoy the money pit as well, but i havent watched dragnet, yet. I wish more movies came in trios like this one. It would make things easier.

4 out of 5 stars tom hanks comedy favourites.......2007-05-07

I never much liked DRAGNET but i bought the package because i love the BURBS and the MONEY PIT.Tom Hanks has a special way of doing comedy and i think he is just awesome

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY!! FUNNY!! FUNNY!!.......2007-03-28

While "The Money Pit" is obviously the gem of the trio, "Dragnet" and "The Burbs" are just as funny in the end. Tom Hanks is truely a commic genius!

3 out of 5 stars One star for each.......2007-03-02

It's a tricky thing. When it's done well - it's Gone with the Wind (1939). When it's done badly - it's The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990). And I was in Bonfire Of The Vanities! "I've made over 20 movies, and 5 of them are good."--Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks is one of the Greatest American Actors working today. However, like many actors, not every film is a hit or worth keeping.

These three films are from the 1980's and are some of his worst.

The Money Pit (1986) is about a couple who picks up a fixer up home and suck money it in, hence the title. The film also starts Shelly Long from Cheers

The Burbs (1989)is an urban nightmare when Hanks and his neighbors think there is a serial killer. This satire on urban life , which has Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher and Corey Feldman also are in the cast, falls flat

and the comedy send up Dragnet (1987)is watchable. This humorous send up of the Jack Webb Tv show has some moments. Dan Aykroyd plays the nephew of Webb's Joe Friday. Hanks is his partner. Christopher Plummer is a minster doing illegal stuff, there where the fun ensues

These are no Hanks best work, buy these if you want to complete your Hank DVD collection

The line between parody and tribute can be hard to draw, but any marginally hip baby boomer who ever watched Jack Webb's straight-laced Detective Joe Friday caught a glimmer of the comedic vein waiting to be mined beneath Dragnet's gritty Los Angeles streets. In 1987 moviegoers had yet to be crushed under the weight of the 1990s TV remake mania, and Dragnet comes off as fresh and funny. Dan Aykroyd plays Joe Friday, the straight-arrow nephew of Webb's iconic cop. This part was made for him (in fact, he's given top writing credit), and under his steely exterior you can tell he's having a ball delivering those rapid-fire recitations of regulations and deadpan expressions of moral outrage. Tom Hanks plays Pep Streebek, the laissez-faire narco agent who is Friday's new partner. Their assignment: bust the Pagans, a wild-and-woolly gang of dope fiends, deadbeats, and beatniks behind a bewildering array of bizarre robberies. Hilarity ensues. Friday and Streebek outfox a corrupt televangelist (Christopher Plummer), bicker over chili dogs and cigarettes, alternately revile and fawn over a porn millionaire (Dabney Coleman), wrestle a 30-foot-long anaconda, and rescue the virgin Connie Swail--the only girl capable of stealing Friday's heart. --Grant Balfour

5 out of 5 stars Dragnet....Joe Friday would be proud.......2007-02-18

This is just a great comedy for everyone..although those of us old enough to have watched the original TV show will surely appreciate it more. Dan Aykroyd was a huge fan of the show and his homage to the show is evident throughout. Tom Hanks is great, too! He's such a good comic actor and this role was perfect for him. Their chemistry as actors is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Always Good.......2006-11-07

This movie is as good the first time you see it or the third or fourth. Tom Hanks and Dan Aykyrod are hilarious in their own unique way. You will never regret purchasing this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Luke warm at best........2006-08-11

Dan Ackroyd is Sgt. Joe Friday of the LAPD. His partner has retired and is replaced by Pep Streebeck (Tom Hanks). Together they lead the investigation of a series of crimes committed by a criminal organization that leaves a calling card bearing the acronym P.A.G.A.N. at each scene. Friday is a man who plays by the book, and he has memorized each line in it. Streebeck is the Yin to Friday's Yang. The personalities clash and the result is comedy.

In the movie, Joe Friday is actually the nephew of the Joe Friday popularized and memorialized in the original TV show by the same name.

Dan Ackroyd plays the part well, though was not overly impressive. I really began to think about the fact that some of his earlier work was so impressive (e.g. Ghostbusters, Blues Brothers) that parts like this were really beneath is potential.

Tom Hanks gave me somewhat of the same impression. This was the young, loveable Tom Hanks. He was the care-free bachelor with the wild side. He was the guy who, unfortunately, no parts are written for today (though that is not terrible from the perspective that there is probably no one who could ever replicate the young Tom Hanks). He had the sharp wit and quick comebacks that were timed perfectly with Ackroyd as Joe Friday, but Friday was the main character. Ackroyd was the lead and Hanks had to play support.

The first half of the movie was fun. Not necessarily funny, but fun. It was the fun 80s movie that made me nostalgic for the movies I loved growing up and have a permanent place in my DVD collection. Those movies are silly comedies that are not really all that funny in today's society, but the jokes are a familiar and comfortable reminder. If the movies have a link to your past, they are great. If you try to apply 1987 jokes to a fresh 2006 audience, the results will not be favorable. And the results of my watching Dragnet were not favorable for what I believe to be that reason. For my time, I would rather watch those movies I hold dear than be reminded of them by a sub-par Dan Ackroyd performance in a movie that keeps a young Tom Hanks tied up in the yard.

I watched Dragnet on a recommendation that came up during discussion around the Top 5 Tom Hanks movies. Dragnet does not make my top 5.

5 out of 5 stars Just the facts .......2006-03-14

whether you are a fan of the original Dragnet series or not, this is a fun movie --- in the same way Airplane spoofed Airport, this film gives a comedic twist to the most serious situation.
Dan Akroyd is wonderfully dry, yet soulful, while Tom Hanks is outrageous, but with a heart.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies I have ever seen despite the fact people hate this movie.......2006-01-18

Dragnet was released in the summer of 1987.
I first saw this movie when a friend brought the movie over and I was doubled over in laughter from beginning to end.
The film was basically a send-up of the original dramatic series but with set in 1987 and non-stop comedy from beginning to end.
Dan Aykroyd plays Joe Friday's nephew Joe Friday to perfection and Tom Hanks was classic as his hip new partner Pep Streebek whom loved living dangerously.
Friday's stiff upper lip and insensitive persona and Streebek's free-spirited, care-free persona clash from smoking to how to operate high speed chases, food tastes and everything in between.
The two head PAGAN villians Emil Muzz(played by Jack O Halloran) and Reverend Jonathan Wurley(played with perfection by Christopher Plummer) are the funniest villians I have seen on film.
Key moments in this movie are when Friday and Streebek first take a trip to the zoo(Friday says the missing lion's mane will cause kids not to see a lion again and Streebek responds "Kids, it'll grow back" and kids respond with cheers), when they go to the Bait mansion(parodying Playboy), then when they meet Enid Borden, then when Friday and Streebeck chasing Emil Muzz(alot of humorous dialogue that ensues between Aykroyd and Hanks), go undercover to the PAGAN meeting, Friday's arresting of Wurley at The Brown Derby and then the ending battle with PAGAN.
I don't know why people pan this film, this is a classic and one of few movies I can watch start to finish without hitting skip scene or fast forward.
Recommended for those open to give film a chance and not for those who either are not fans or those who have a vendetta against me and counters my review for no reason!

"This is the city--Los Angeles, California." "I carry a badge." "My name's Friday." And who could forget "Just the facts, ma'am"? These lines, delivered in classic deadpan style by actor-director Jack Webb's Sgt. Joe Friday, are among the hallmarks of Dragnet, one of television's earliest and most influential police dramas. And the appearance on DVD of all 17 episodes from the show's first season (1967), covering two discs (plus a third with a radio broadcast from 1954) and running more than seven hours, is a treat. Decades after the fact, when vivid, often graphically violent cop shows like the C.S.I. and Law & Order franchises (all of them clearly owing a debt to Webb's show) dominate the airwaves, Dragnet seems tame, even quaint. Violence and gunplay are kept to a minimum. Special effects are non-existent, and many scenes are talky and static; "The Big Interrogation" takes place almost entirely in a single room in the police station, and includes a four-minute speech by Friday about the plight of a police officer ("You're a cop, a flatfoot, a bull, a dick, John Law… they call you everything, but never a policeman"). The stories are uncomplicated, the criminals are usually dunderheads, and "square" barely begins to describe the overall tone (witness "The Big LSD," a risible depiction of a "hippie" on a psychedelic sojourn). Still, one gets the feeling that we're laughing not at but with Webb, the writers, and the rest of the cast (including Harry Morgan, later of M*A*S*H*, as sidekick Bill Gannon). By about halfway through the season, with episodes like "The Big Candy Story" and "The Big Fur Burglary" (an almost whimsical tale wherein Gannon pretends to be an expert furrier), it appears that Webb and company are enjoying themselves just as much as the viewers are; at the same time, the characters' personal lives are explored in a bit more detail, which adds some welcome texture.

Sure, it's dated--everybody smokes, everyone's white, and character descriptions like "strange-behaving juvenile" are more common than not. But in the end, the Dragnet approach, stilted though it may sometimes be, is a refreshing antidote to the oh-so-hip cop melodramas that have come along since. Best, and simplest, of all, Dragnet 1967 - Season 1 is downright entertaining. --Sam Graham

Dragnet Trivia

• When the original show ("Dragnet" (1951)) ended, Joe Friday had been promoted to Lieutenant. However, Jack Webb decided to make Friday a sergeant again for the new series because "few people remember that Friday was promoted toward the end of our run. We think it's better to have Joe a sergeant again. Few detective-lieutenants get out into the field."
• Jack Webb and Harry Morgan wore the same suits for the entire run of the television series.
• Through all 100 episodes of the series, Friday is only seen wearing something other than his regular suit four times: three times for undercover work and once for a scene in his apartment.
• Episodes from this series were used as training tools by the real-life LAPD.
• When Jack Webb revived the show in 1966, it was in response to the growing tide of teen-age drug use, especially LSD.
• Jack Webb would pay $25 to any officer who submitted a story that was used for an episode plot.
• During the run of this version, the title would change to reflect the year that it was broadcast in (Dragnet 1967, Dragnet 1968 and so on).
• Friday's badge number (seen at the beginning and end of each episode) is 714. Badge 714 belonged to Sgt. 'Dan Cooke' , the technical advisor. The badge has been retired and displayed at the LAPD Academy's Museum.
• The pair of hands seen hammering the Mark VII logo at the end of every episode belong to Jack Webb.

1 out of 5 stars Great show, horrible DVD.......2007-04-23

Dragnet was a great TV show and I was psyched when I found that it had been released on DVD. Unfortunately the discs didn't play properly in my DVD player. I tried them in my other player and then on my computer and discovered that they paused and skipped in the same places. I returned the set for a new one and had the same problems! I returned the set and got my money back and purchased it from a different store and, whadayaknow, SAME PROBLEMS! I'd love to buy the entire series but since Universal seems to be totally inept in the area of DVDs I doubt I'd risk it. It still surprises me when companies like Universal show such disrespect for their customers by releasing defective products. I eventually found an, er, unauthorized version of the series on DVD which play perfectly. Sergeant Friday would disapprove, I'm sure, but, man, what a great show!

4 out of 5 stars Jack's the man!.......2007-04-13

I love listening to Jack Webb's stacatto, scolding monologues to the criminals he deals with. Watch for Heather Menzies from "The Sound of Music" in one of the episodes. Also, Kent McCord plays a wrongly accused undercover cop in a prelude to his "Adam 12" role. Harry Morgan brings some comic relief as Webb's partner. I like how Friday and Gannon work a different detective division virtually every episode. This isn't what happens in real life, but I'm sure it was done to expose viewers to all the different types of detectives there are in Los Angeles. The DVD transfer is fair, but it's adequate. Awaiting the second season.....

3 out of 5 stars 'Season One' is not 'Number One'.......2007-03-04

This was actually the weakest season of the 60's version of Dragnet. However, the set is worth buying if only for the classic debut ("The Big LSD") an unintentionally funny view of the effects of LSD on youth. One kid sticks his head in the ground and tries to eat the bark off a tree, another kid eats paint at a party, and the main culprit "Blueboy" paints half his face blue. The rest of the episodes are okay but a bit dry compared to seasons 2 thru 4, when the more human, personal side of Friday and Gannon's characters was introduced.

4 out of 5 stars Just the (campy) facts, ma'am.......2007-02-19

The review you are about to read is true. No names have been changed.

I've been waiting for the 60's Dragnet to reach DVD, and now I got my wish. Definitely the adage "be careful what you wish for" cannot apply here! I watched it endlessly in syndication on regular (read free) TV in the 70s and on Nick at Nite and TV Land in the 90s and taped a marathon the last time Nick at Nite aired it, but I misplaced the tape. Thank Heaven for the DVD.

And the episodes are still a hoot as I remember them, but one has to keep in mind the time period they were produced -- the 60s, when drugs in suburbia was new and people over 35 were not to be trusted. (But women's hair was still big and nearly everyone smoked.) The 60s episodes still have the same attention to authenticity that the 50s series had, but the 60s show is campier -- unintentionally -- because of producer/director/star Jack Webb's strict law-and-order mindset, the sometimes stiff acting, the way characters went off on tangents in their discourse (see "The Big Subscription Racket" for a good example), and the clipped dialogue. Yet it does inject some intentional humor with Officer Gannon's crazy stuffed sandwiches and comments about getting Sgt. Friday to lose his single status. I particularly found the episode where Gannon poses as a furrier a scream! Check out the "hair stylist" in the "Big Hammer" episode! And of course, Blue Boy! How do you spell c-a-m-p?

A few other well-remembered 60s episodes I look forward to seeing on DVD is the Christmas 1969 one where a baby Jesus statuette was stolen from a church Nativity scene; one where a Vietnam vet with a prosthetic leg flies contraband into Los Angeles and gets his "combat pay" near a rock inscribed with "Jesus Saves"; and one where Friday and Gannon bust a lady running a multilevel marketing company which is really a pyramid scheme.

I didn't like how Universal truncated its fanfare and logo from the end credits after the "Mark VII"; I like to see my classic TV in its commercial-free, uncut glory. Still, it was worth the money. Hope Universal comes out with the rest of the seasons, maybe adding a few extras like the original 1966 TV movie, the Johnny Carson Tonight Show "Copper Capers" sketch, and A&E's Biography on Jack Webb.

Just the facts. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Just the facts .......2007-01-12

The first season is great and its wonderful to see each episode uncut instead of seeing them on TV cut for commercials. Waiting for Season 2.

Bought new/used from Digitaleyes.net. Needed to return as it was a duplicated Christmas gift. VERY POOR response from Digitaleyes!

1 out of 5 stars Vintage Garbage - Modern Marketing.......2004-11-26

This DVD set is just plain awful.

Obscure, bottom-of-the-sewer episodes replete with authentic 1950s television broadcast quality.

Avoid this purchase like the plague.

5 out of 5 stars Great looking DVD of 1950s favorites.......2003-08-13

There are plenty of DVDs out on the market today with episodes of television shows from the 1950s and 1960s that have fallen into the "public domain." Many of them are cheaply put together and, visually, look it. Not so with releases from the Falcon Picture Group. By and large, their releases look better than the vast majority of DVDs with older television shows. The reason for this is that they have done digital restoration of the prints included on this set.

What I like about this DVD is the great variety of shows included. Yes, some of the shows, like Dragnet, the Lone Ranger, Red Skelton, etc., are available on other DVDs, but they have also included some shows like Racket Squad, Mr. & Mrs. North, and Sea Hunt that are either rarely or never seen on video/DVD. I hadn't seen Sea Hunt since its syndication run in the 1960s. What a great show and, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only episode available anywhere on DVD (wish there were more episodes of Sea Hunt on DVD).

While this disk is more of a "potpourri" of different types of television shows from the 1950s, Falcon also offers three other DVDs, including ones with television Detectives, Westerns, and Comedies. If you are nostalgic for this great era in television, these DVDs are the way to go. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars One of two sets that are must have's .......2007-01-26

This set along with the 16 episode set from Raintree Home video (can be purchased at amazon)essentially contain every episode that is currently out there (for the original series). This Brentwood set (like the Raintree set) doesn't look great but is certainly watchable and in places quite good. It is a shame that the original Dragnet series will probably never recieve a solid dvd release.

4 out of 5 stars Old Dragnet Episodes.......2007-01-19

These are classic Jack Webb Dragnet episodes. They are a bit dated, and predictable. The picture quality is good but not great. The same cast members show up as different characters in various episodes which was typical for the series. I found the 20 episodes very entertaining, and will likely watch them again in the future.

4 out of 5 stars great value, good episodes, although not exactly what I ordered.......2006-11-15

The description of the item is for the 1954 movie, which is what I thought I was ordering. It turned out to be 20 episodes of the series instead. These original episodes are great, though, and although the packaging/quality is not the best, you can't beat the price. Our favorite episode is The Big Boys, with a young Leonard Nimoy. Would like to see more of the original series!

3 out of 5 stars Be careful of what you're getting!.......2006-01-20

The storyline in the ad is that of the 1954 full length feature film while the DVD is that of 20 half hour episodes of the TV show. I wanted the movie and ended up with the TV shows. While I enjoyed watching them, it wasn't what I expected. I didn't send them back because it wasn't worth the shipping costs. I should have read more carefully!

4 out of 5 stars Inferior quality is no bargain!.......2006-01-19

Yes, I agree on 5 stars for content but the picture quality is more like 2 stars in my opinion. I'd say the quality of the episodes range from poor to fair. The images abound with lines and various artifacts in addition to being fairly "grainy". I've seen dollar DVDs with better quality than these. Yes, I agree they are "watchable" which is all some avid fans may require but I doubt if Jack Webb would approve. 5 stars for content and 2 stars for video quality averages 3.5 which is why I'm rating it a (generous) 4. The audio is ok.

This looks like a fine collection of the old '50's Dragnet with Joe Friday and Frank Smith plus media for the iPod video. But why does the cover feature Joe Friday and Bill Gannon from the sixties series?
