He was no one's (including his own) idea of a great actor--one senses that the one Oscar he won, for True Grit in 1970, was as much for his longevity as his talent--but "icon" is an apt description for John "Duke" Wayne, who starred in scores of movies in a career that spanned 50 years. Five of them are collected on John Wayne - An American Icon Collection, a two-disc, no-frills (as in no bonus material) set offered at a very reasonable price. Ranging from 1940 to 1957, these items reveal that although he didn't have a lot of range ("I play John Wayne in pretty much every film I do," he once admitted), Wayne was at least willing to tackle other genres besides the Westerns with which he's so closely identified; here he portrays a coal miner, a moonshiner, and a legendary warrior, along with the more expected military roles. As for the quality of the films, let's just say that "good" and "entertaining" don't always go on the same page, and the set at least has plenty of the latter. Seven Sinners ('40) is the best of the lot, with Marlene Dietrich sly and radiant as the delightfully named Bijou Blanche, a South Pacific cabaret singer who tantalizes naval officer Wayne. At the other end of the spectrum is The Conqueror ('55), generally regarded as Wayne's worst feature ever, but even it is a campy hoot. Sporting a Fu Manchu 'stache and many silly hats and delivering some preposterously stilted dialogue ("Hi, Mom" becomes "I greet you, my mother!"), Wayne plays Mongol warlord Temujin, soon to become Genghis Khan, who's obsessed with a beautiful princess (Susan Hayward as a Tartar? Mayonnaise is more like it) who just happens to be the daughter of the man responsible for the death of Temujin's father. Pittsburgh ('42), again pairing Wayne with the luminous Dietrich, is considerably better, charting the rise, fall, and redemption of miner-turned-captain-of-industry Charles "Pittsburgh" Markham in a story that's both humorous and dramatic before devolving into flag-waving World War II propaganda. Neither The Shepherd of the Hills ('41), sentimental hokum about a clan of drawling, superstitious Ozark hicks, nor Jet Pilot ('57), with a pre-Psycho Janet Leigh as a Russian spy (!), ranks as what you'd call a classic--indeed, there are no classics to be found anywhere here--but the Duke, always a man's man, probably wouldn't mind. "When people say a John Wayne picture got bad reviews," he said, "I always wonder if they know it's a redundant sentence, but hell, I don't care. People like my pictures and that's all that counts." --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Great American at some of his best.......2007-06-27

Movies used to be great, John Wayne truly was a great icon of American bigscreen, movies then always defeated the evil forces, good always triumphed. I guess, we had real writers then, who knew what people wanted to see. I highly reccommend this. The DVD got here in a timely fashion.

4 out of 5 stars Not Iconic but Interesting.......2007-06-11

This collection fills in another void in available John Wayne films. Most of these movies, save Shepherd, have not been seen on TV for decades, if ever and none of them are his best work. But these movies span the War years, during Wayne's transition into a star.

In the "Seven Sinners" - 1940 - Wayne plays second fiddle to Marlene Dietrich, a cabaret singer for whose love Wayne is willing to sacrafice his Naval career. Made a year before Pearl Harbor, the movie shows a strangely innocent view of the service - where chasing chorus girls and visiting native bars seemed to be the sole occupation of the Navy.

The "Shepherd of the Hills" - 1941 - is the gem of this collection, in which Wayne plays an Ozark orphan who is manipulated by his aunt to murder his absent father. Harry Carry, as Wayne's long-lost father, who is willing to kill his own son rather than see him branded a murderer, steals the show.

Pittsburgh - 1942 - Wayne stars with Randolf Scott and Marlene Dietrich (again) in this "Horatio Alger" story about two coal miners with an idea that make them rich. Along the way, Wayne loses his moral center and loses the girl and his friends. This movie almost turns into a pro-industry/anti-labor propoganda piece in support of the war effort.

The Conqueror - 1955 - This is one of the worst movies John Wayne ever made. It is worth watching just to see how bad an actor he could be. Wayne plays Genghis Khan, and Susan Hayward plays a mongol princess. The costumes are ridiculous, the acting awful, and the results are tragic, as Howard Hughes filmed the movie out in the Nevada desert in a region polluted by above-ground nuclear testing. Worse yet, when the production moved into the studio, Hughes had tons of the red, radioactive dirt trucked into the set. Many of the actors in the movie, including Wayne, eventually died of various cancer. No doubt Wayne's lifetime of cigarette smoking was the main factor in his death, but the fact that he spent months, during the filming of the Conquerer, breathing radioactive isolotes did not help.

Jet Pilot - 1957 - is another forgettable Wayne film, in which he plays a pilot who defects to Russian (but not really) for love of a female Russia pilot who defects to the U.S., turns out to be a spy, but not really. The only virtue of this film is that it is marginally better than The Conqueror.

This set is a good mix of Wayne's non-cowboy films and show the wide range of roles he was able to play from romantic comedies to period drama and propaganda film to war movies. Wayne affectionados will want to add this to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Shepherd of the Hills.......2007-06-08

this was very good movie and of special interest to me. the other movies were good, too. John Wayne was an excellent actor.

5 out of 5 stars J.W. an american icon.......2007-05-27

The "Duke" is my favorite action hero. Out of 152 movies this giant has made, I have seen 116. The oldest being "SALUTE'. I will continue to add to my collection as his older movies are being added to the dvd list.

5 out of 5 stars The Shepherd of the Hills.......2007-01-21

I bought this DVD simply because it contained The Shepherd of the Hills, which is a different kind of movie for John Wayne, who did a great job in his role as a young and determined Ozark mountain man who learns a great lesson at the end of the movie.

Description

Every now and then something happens that thrust custom motorcycling, and its associated lifestyle blinking into the glare of the spotlight. Life magazine started the ball rolling in 1947 with their Hollister cover story, it was picked up by The Wild One in '53, and then Easy Rider in 1969. There has been a myriad selection of others with lurid titles and plotlines since, the majority has been commercially, and shamelessly exploiting the genre, or the fears of an impressionable public, with few breaking the surface and establishing a fan base.

Choppertown, the independently produced film by One World Studios, is up there with the giants as a potentially life-changing classic that will find a broad audience, not least among men, and could re-establish a grass-roots motorcycle culture. Strangely compulsive viewing, it is a frank, intimate and disarming look at the relationships of a group of exclusively male riders - the Sinners of the title - centered around the story of one member, Kutty Noteboom, building his first ground-up bike with the help of fellow Sinner, Rico, and his workshop. ~from American V-twin Magazine, July 2006

5 out of 5 stars Choppertown: The Sinners.......2007-02-23

One of the best motorcycle DVDs I've seen in years! Shows the life that most of us would love to live. I definitely recommend this DVD to any biker.

5 out of 5 stars A "real" movie about bikes........2006-11-28

When I started to watch this movie, I really was not sure what to expect. I thought that maybe this movie was going to be just another show about putting expensive bikes together. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't anything like that. This movie caught my attention for it was about real people, living real lives, who enjoy building and riding motorcycles. Being a motorcycle rider myself, I can relate to the passion these guys have. I can see it in their actions and over all philosophy of how they live their lives. This movie does a great job bringing this out as well the loyalty these guys have to their friends. This is something that is real, not fake, and should be watched by anyone who rides.

5 out of 5 stars cool and different.......2006-11-26

i really liked this movie because it turns conventional documentary structure on its head and really gives the impression of riding along with this fascinating group of people. it felt like one of alex cox's movies "straight to hell" or "sid and nancy" because of the cool organic way the music was mixed in. a great indie effort.

5 out of 5 stars It is about so much more than bikes, though the bikes rock!.......2006-11-24

I love this movie. There are so many things good to say about it, but perhaps the best thing about this is that they nailed what bikes are about. It is about brotherhood, hanging with your bros, loyalty.... The bikes are amazing, but you don't have to like bikes to identify with the movie. Anybody who cares about their friends will get something out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-11-23

There isn't really anything else like this on the market so I wasn't sure what to think, but it took me into a world I hadn't experienced before and left me thinking about it afterwards. An indie gem...great music too!

"It's an epic!" howls one of the fighters in the free-for-all finale, overwhelmed by the sheer number of characters that get crowded into a single room, all pounding away at each other. Indeed, every comic actor and most of the leading action stars in Hong Kong in 1983 seem to have been squeezed into this amiable kung fu comedy--there are even tiny cameo appearances by several famous movie directors (Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Wu Ma). This picture marks the debut of a loose-knit group of farce-action stalwarts, the Five Lucky Stars, stumble-bum reformed crooks who attempt to go straight by setting up a cleaning service, but can't seem to help getting into tons of trouble. The Stars went on to appear in several sequels, including My Lucky Stars. Jackie Chan, as a cop pursuing the hapless crooks, is essentially the straight man here, and he seems to be using a stunt double in some of his big scenes. This is a close as Chan ever got to phoning in a performance. --David Chute

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars stuck between a 2 and a 3, but it was enjoyable.......2006-09-08

The movie starts off with these 5 convicts going to jail. They become friends and go live at one of the convicts uncle's house and try to make it on the outside world.

There is not really much action and that is why I watched it. but the comedy was pretty good. It does have one hilarious sequence where one of the guys is reading a book on invisibility. When the other 4 find out they trick him into thinking he really is invisible. Sammo was at his best in scenes like these, but this movie didn't have enough of them.

Now Jackie Chan is in this but he only appears in a few scenes and you will not see him for 30-40 minutes at a time Then when he does show up he will just be walikgn down the street and run into Yuen Biao and get into a fight. This fight was only 30 seconds long but was awesome! Jackie is a cop in this and he really should have been in the film a little bit more.

So the group of convicts pisses off James Tien and his gang and they have one spectacular fight. Sammo has a flyign backwards jump kick that has to be seen to be believed.

So this movie has like 7 action sequences but 1 or maybe 2 that really deliver.

Also check this out to see Jackie Chan as the Tony Hawk of roller skating. And with a comment like that I feel the need to tell you that this movie is much better than Jackie's 'The BIg Brawl'.

3 out of 5 stars you may like it.......2006-03-01

I don't have alot to say but this movie is funny, and you will have smile face when you watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan..........2005-08-17

Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan... You Bak Guis didn't get it, did you? This was a Sammo Hung movie and if you were brought up in the 60's, 70's and 80's with the genre you would know that not all Chinese movies are about Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan... I am a Jackie Chan fan but I can open my mind to other types of these movies and enjoy the heck out of them.
This movie paid tribute to many of the kung fu fighting movies by making a farce of the fighting. Did you guys hear the tribute to Wong Fei Hung. Oh, sorry... Who's Wong Fei Hung?
Pick it up, sit down, shut up and enjoy the ride. You'll love this movie.

4 out of 5 stars If you like Kung fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer.........2005-07-27

this is a good look at the precursor to that kind of humor. You can see how it influences such movies and has some smart writing (even if its sometimes predictable... you must remember it was a new style at the time). Overall its a fun movie with one great scene (clue: have you ever wanted to be invisible)

4 out of 5 stars Lightearted and Funny.......2004-10-17

Oh, I expected to see a little bit more of Jackie Chan in this movie. He is maybe in about one qurter of the movie. I did very much enjoy his acrobatics, besides the martial arts segments. I was happy to see that Yuen Biao had a brief appearance. And yes, I know it is mainly Sammo Hung's movie and the crew was charming. The movie had some martial arts segments, but it's more of a con-comedy. And a scene where about 50 old cars got smashed seemed oh, way too many.

Description

Convent of Sinners is the story of Susanna (Eva Grimaldi of BLACK COBRA), a young girl who is raped by her own father and sent to a convent for her sins, where she falls in love with a priest. The other nuns, however, are jealous and angry, they want Susanna for themselves, and accuse her of being possessed by the Devil.

2 out of 5 stars Fast forward review.......2006-07-13

A proper wic (women in convent) flick should at least contain lots of nudity of course, plenty of nun-to-nun action, flagellation to drive those bad stains on the soul away, and then something extra, maybe a nice inquisition scene, with a nubile nun stretched on the rack while some robed dude sits at a bench with a feather pen taking down her confession. Oh yes, and I haven't met a nun yet that didn't enjoy taking a long soapy bath with another nun, and maybe helping each other out in cleaning those hard to get places. And since the nuns can hardly walk around in skimpy clothes like in a wip (women in prison) movie, there needs to be a minimum of plot so they can dispose of those bulky penguin costumes as frequently as possible to keep the NTRL factor up (nudity to total running length).

So how does this awful (in any other context) film stack up? Well, it starts with a bang, an R rated semi-rape with carpet grabbing, and then swings right into a nude convent entry scene of the "victim", who's apparently been told, "get thee to a nunnery", I guess, I had the sound off. Can't say much for the underwear, I'd have preferred some thorns, but you can't have everything.

A wasted putting the new girl to bed scene follows, a little self-examination in the hall, and then we're right into a bathing scene, but hey! It's a dude, that's not right. Never mind, because for some reason two young topless nuns get their backs striped, and it's not bad, but could have been more graphic. Then we get a proper bathing scene, although the darn nun hood she's wearing kinda spoils it if you ask me. Well, let's go to bed, eh? Only, another lez scene is wasted in the young girl's room, no fair.

A scene of penguin kissing follows - is it just me, or would you prefer nun lez scenes to have less clothes? - but it's wasted when one of the lezzer nuns gets sick, or something. Darn it, that's three wasted opportunities for action. We get a self-flagellation scene, but it's kinda short and not graphic enough (at least it's mono topless), and then one of the nuns (with the darn hoods it's hard to tell which one) cops a self-feel while sniffing a stable boy's clothes, but even though he's in the next room, another sex opportunity is let go.

Finally we get a really proper multi-nun bathing scene, fine except for those darn hoods, don't they ever wash their hair? Must get kind of greasy under there. Another bedroom lez scene comes up short, a little foaming at the mouth follows (no, I don't know why) and another self-flaggelation scene that's also too short and doesn't show the back, that's breaking the rules in my book.

A decent multi-nun whipping scene follows, but again no back shots, and then . . . nobody expects the Spanish inquisition! Some church dudes show up and let the torture begin. They inject her with holy water, somewhere down there, and . . . hey, where's the confession? There's a brief nude apre-lez scene, also not fair, and then some trial plot, wherein the young nun takes off her clothes, flops on the ground in front of the judges and it ends! Dang, no marshmallow roast.

They should re-title this film "Interruptus", the whole thing is a series of lost opportunites. All the basic wic ingredients were there, and it failed miserably to take advantage of them. The best I can come up with is three sleaze stars for nudity, abuse and lezzing, with one redacted in revenge for ending up with blue stones. In spite of the multiple sleaze scenes, it just never kept you interested long enough. It's also kind of expensive for what you get, not sure I can recommend it at all.

Description

After living together for seven years in a seemingly accepting community in New York City, Edward DeBonis and Vincent Maniscalco decide to get married. But unlike many other gay couples who formalize their relationship in a domestic union, Vincent and Edward, both devout Catholics, will settle for nothing short of the "Holy Sacrament of Marriage." The couple's request to The New York Times to announce their wedding in the weekly "Styles" section throws the newspaper into disarray. Publishing the first Catholic gay wedding announcement presents the editors with numerous controversial questions: Is a gay priest a real priest? Can a gay union be called a wedding? Can a gay couple be considered Catholic? As America stands on the verge of legal acceptance of gay and lesbian unions, Saints and Sinners explores the social, political and religious aspects of same-sex marriage and examines its effect on American society.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2006-02-20

A moving story of two people in love, Edward and Vincent, and their fight for equal rights. It's about people who determined to celebrate their relationship on their terms.

"Saints and Sinners" explores the social, political and religious aspects of same-sex marriage and examines its effect on American society. It shows how unfairly the Catholic Church treats gays and lesbians. (For Edward, who grew up as an altar boy, and Vincent, who was baptized at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral in Little Italy and who attends Sunday Mass regularly, getting married outside the Catholic tradition is not an option.) Powerful argument for legalization of gay marriage.

1 out of 5 stars How bad do you want to see Lenny Bruce in a movie?.......2005-06-18

An aging stripper wields great powers over others with the aid of a mysterious amulet in SIN, YOU SINNERS.
The word `aging' seems a kind way to put it. By the look of things, Mama's 30-year-lease on middle age is about to expire soon, although that fact doesn't seem to threaten her hold over manager Dave and her daughter. Nor, saints preserve us, does it stop her from grinding and bumping every 15 minutes or so.
Dave, Mama's bought and paid for boy toy, is her manager and bongo drum accompanist when she's plying her second trade as an amulet waving spiritualist who specializes in bilking the rich. Dave also has the hots for the daughter, and the 20-something daughter has the hots for Dave, but neither can unrage a hormone whilst Mama wears the amulet. Even though Mama, saints preserve us, gets to shimmy and shake in her skimpy bikini with the fringe on top, this isn't really a blue movie. Beyond awful, I don't know what it is or how to explain it.
The second howler on this dvd, the reason I picked it up in the first place, is the Lenny Bruce scripted and starring vehicle (the only real movie he was ever in) DANCE HALL RACKET. This one is about a dance hall bilking its customer and the hall's dancing girls bilking the management. Bruce is a revered by stand up comedians as an edgy, topical, pioneering genius of the first order. That may all be so, but his first scripting credited movie doesn't bear it out. No stand up, no jokes, no ha-ha in this one. It stinks.
It doesn't help that the transfer print was in pretty bad shape, and at some point between 1953 and today someone clipped out all the brief nudie shots in the girls' dressing room. Losing the quick peeks is no big deal, but it fouls up the soundtrack and dialogue and renders some conversations even more ridiculous than I imagine they'd be otherwise.
Two stinkers for the price of one. Not recommended as entertainment, although this is probably the best chance you have to see a walking and talking Lenny Bruce. If that doesn't do it for you, avoid this dvd like the plague.

4 out of 5 stars about the movie Sinners.............2006-04-22

This film that is recorded out from the DVD and shown in Singapore theatre called YangTze. The story is not too bad and there are some sexual content with nudity. The story is basically about how man and woman created sexual sin and am not going to expalin too much if not the fun of watching will not be there. Those whom are interested in this genre of movie could view the movie at Yangtze theatre in Singapore located at Outram where there is a old police station which there is a building beside it. You will have to walk along the food stalls at the side which will lead you to near behind the building where there is a small door which will lead you to the theatre building. You will be able to purchase your ticket at level 4 when you board the lift after you walk and turn right of the footway.
