Despite the tumultuous events in this sleek, handsome 1970 adaptation of Harold Robbins' bestselling novel, The Adventurers is arresting entertainment from the constantly inventive director of the original Alfie, Lewis Gilbert. Smoldering Yugoslavian actor Bekim Fehmiu stars as Dax Xenos, son of a revolutionary hero in an unnamed South American nation. As a child (played by Loris Loddi), Dax witnessed the murder of his mother and sisters by government goons, and he helped insurgent leader Rojo (Alan Badel) execute those responsible. As Dax grows up, his destiny is inexorably tied to the fate of his country and the whims of an increasingly despotic Rojo. But before he realizes that, the hunky gadabout chases women and races in the streets of Rome, spends some time as a gigolo (romancing a wealthy, heartbreakingly sympathetic Olivia de Havilland), marries and separates from a lovely heiress (Candice Bergen), and becomes a pawn in a terrible plot by Rojo to consolidate his power. The outstanding cast in this nearly three-hour film includes Fernando Rey, Charles Aznavour, Leigh Taylor-Young, and Ernest Borgnine. Gilbert's production is endlessly imaginative and exciting. Long before crowd scenes in movies could be computer-generated, directors such as Gilbert really did have to assemble thousands of extras for moments as spectacular as the battle sequences in The Adventurers. --Tom Keogh
Description
THE ADVENTURERS is an irresistible mega-movie loaded with all the trappings and treacheries, power plays and passions, intrigues and in-fighting of the world's super-rich. At the center of the jet-setting story is troubled playboy Dax, raised far from his South American homeland of Corteguay. Amid the high society and political intrigue of Italy, Dax uses romance as a stepping stone to success... and all the while schemes to bring vengeance on those who once wronged him and his family.
Customer Reviews:
a stylish guilty pleasure.......2007-05-13
My vague memory of THE ADVENTURERS was that it was a campily bad studio flick--one I'd never bothered to see when it came out in 1970. Nearly 40 years later, it turns out to be extremely entertaining as a DVD experience. On the big screen during the era of EASY RIDER and M*A*S*H, it's easy to see that this would be considered an overproduced, overblown bore. But with a pre-CGI cast of thousands and extravagant sets, it's now truly impressive.
I haven't been a reader of Harold Robbins, but this film explains his popularity. The fantasy elegance of the rich and ambitious is tremendous fun, and he crams more plot into his story that a whole shelf of Galsworthy. Except for a 4-yr-old in the second part of the movie (yes, there's actually an intermission!), even the kid actors are good in their roles.
I'd expected VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and instead found the epic sweep and sturdy dialogue of the Taylor-Burton CLEOPATRA. True, a number of the sex scenes look like PLAYBOY (not PENTHOUSE) layouts from the '60s (James Bondy but even more lavish), and a couple of daringly camp touches after the intermission are a hoot: a VALLEY OF THE DOLLS fashion show, and an UNDER THE YUM YUM TREE lothario's lair.
All in all, however, this DVD is a good investment and, of course, after large portions of such rich scenes and scenery, one can turn off the DVD for a while to recupe before plunging again into its fabulous excess!
Worth while watching........2007-03-15
This is a good movie even tho' it's old. However the story is set in a time that makes the movie quite enjoyable and South America "seems" to be set in the past anyway.
Worth viewing.
Violence, Intrigue, Sex and the Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim.......2007-03-12
Despite being a famous novel by Harold Robbins, despite being a tutorial doc about how to do politics in South America, what really matters is the wonderful music by Antonio Carlos Jobim, his only one collaboration for movie soundtracks in America.
Sorry that the original soundtrack album is a long time out-of-print item, a big object of desire though part of it has been re-recorded in Mr.Jobim's album 'Stone Flower' for CTi Records, available here @Amazon.
It is also interesting to watch singer and composer Charles Aznavour acting as an actor. It is also good to see beautiful actress Candice Bergen in action.
By the way, the film tells the story of bloody power dispute in a south american republic called 'Corteguay'(a direct or subtle mention to Paraguay ou Uruguay?!).
For romantic audiences, I warn that the hero dies at the end. Sorry.
The Adventurers.......2007-01-09
Because I enjoy epics, documentaries, and other realistic situations, this movie covers a turbulent time in a fictitious country. The times, troubles, politics, and money continue to occur in today's world.
harold robbins' "adventurers" is 70's cheesey look at jet set and politics.......2006-12-01
this THREE HOUR MOVIE,REPEAT THREE HOUR MOVIE, is based on the harold robbins novel of the same name and is one of those all star cast soap movies that along with disater movies ruled the box office in the 70's. as for the review that questioned the rating, well in the 70's this was rated MA or the same as an R today, but really this trash movie isn't as bad as people make it out to be. for one the running time isn't that bad as the movie moves at a quick pace and is always engageing and fun. much like all of mr. robbins novels this is high class junk food and if taken as such this tale of vengeance, greed, sex, power, love, hate, and great 70's sex scenes is quite a good time. just don't expect "gone with the wind"! just sit back eat some popcorn and enjoy!

Ringo Lam's The Adventurers.......2006-04-23
The Adventurers is a fairly average actioner from the once prolific Ringo Lam, more remembered for Andy Lau's then-record-breaking salary for a Hong Kong film (US$1.5m) than its qualities as a film. It has a couple of good moments, but its burdened by a ridiculous plot even by HK standards - after botching an assassination attempt on the uncle who killed his parents for the Khmer Rouge, fighter pilot Lau goes to America, joins the CIA, where they make him the head of the biggest triad in San Francisco so he can kidnap and marry said uncle's daughter to find out about arms shipments to Cambodia... as you do. It's not uncommon for HK films to make the plot up as they go along, but this one plays like they had a different writer for each reel, none of whom were told what the others were doing. An okay time-filler, but no more.
Ho hum........2002-05-26
The production of Francis Drake consists of a narration, some live action monologues, beautiful costumes, and nice close-ups of antique maps. The acting by the Francis Drake character, and other characters, consists mainly in a number of poses. There is little real dialogue, just mainly monologues by the actors. Francis Drake's speech is somewhat easy to understand, but there is a young, blond-haired actor who plays some other character, whose speech is unintelligible. At one point, the Queen Elizabeth character talks to herself by a window, posing stiffly. Wouldn't if have been better to have her talking with some other character? This picture could be helped a bit if it allowed you to activate captions, since the actor's speech is not well recorded. The scenes of the ship, both inside and out, are lovely and inspiring. However, there are no scenes of the ship (Golden Hinde) in the proximity of any other ships, and there are no scenes of it docking near any beaches or towns. Hence, the production as a whole gets a little monotonous. The production could be improved by a few dialogues involving two actors, an argument or two, a short debate, some amusing banter. The company that made this video made a large series of videos on historic persons. Unfortunately, I also bought their version of King Alfred the Great. It too, has monotonous monologues, and speech that is not well recorded.
Shackleton - The Search for Good Video Documentation.......1999-11-24
As one thirsty to find good video content on Shackleton's legendary expedition to Antartica, I am especially interested in Hurley's (Shackleton's photographer on his Endurance voyage) motion picture images, said to exist and to be used to document that trip. Unfortunately, this video has (little or) no footage of Hurley's moving pictures, but does contain the most famous still photos. Perhaps the weakest part of the video is the periodic dramatization, in a studio, of the life threatening circumstances. The snow and setting are obviously fake and don't convey the sense of suffering and harsh conditions under which the expedition labored. On the positive side, the video does a good overall bio on Shackleton, presenting him in a positive light, and showing something of the extraordinary nature of his character.

Description
This is the incredible story of explorer Ernest Shackleton's heroic attempt to lead the first expedition across the last unknown continent of Antarctica in 1914-16. During this voyage, his ship, the Endurance, became locked in sea ice, and for nine months Shackleton fought a losing battle with the harsh elements before the drifting ship was crushed and his crew marooned. Shackleton's amazing voyage then took him and his men across 600 miles of unstable ice floes to a desolate rock called Elephant Island. He and a crew of four there faced the seemingly impossible task of crossing 850 miles of the worst seas on earth in a twenty-two foot open boat to make a landing on South Georgia Island. As if this wasn't enough, they then had to traverse over twenty miles of treacherous mountainous terrain to reach the nearest outpost of civilization. With historical photos and rare film footage, this astonishing story explores the limits of unparalleled human courage, and ranks Ernest Shackleton's voyage among history's greatest adventures.New location footage, specially-commissioned filmed reconstructions and expert authorities bring historical background and provide modern perspective to this unique film.

Four Classic Adventure Series from the 1950s.......2006-06-30
At the time this review was written, Amazon provided no description of the programming found on this 3-DVD set, so I'll attempt to provide some details. The set includes 26 half-hour episodes from two very successful adventure shows of the 1950s and two other 1950s adventures shows that were "one season wonders." Disc 1 includes ten episodes (fully one-third of the series) of "The Adventures of Sir Lancelot" that was broadcast on NBC in the 1956-57 season. Little seen in reruns, this has been a difficult show to find in North America, though the full series has been released on DVD in the UK. The series' introductory episode, "The Knight with the Red Plume" is included but is not the first episode included on the disc. A short narrative on the legend of Sir Lancelot rounds out the disc. Disc 2 includes six early season 1 episodes of "The Adventures of Robin Hood," including the series' first episode, and includes episodes that introduce the characters of Little John, Maid Marian, and Friar Tuck. The show originally ran on CBS from 1955-58, and was made by Sapphire Films, the same production company that made "Sir Lancelot." Like "Sir Lancelot," the full run of "Robin Hood" is available on DVD in the UK. A 1949 radio show about the Robin Hood legend completes the disc and the radio cast includes Edmund O'Brien, Ed Begley, Sr., and William Conrad. Finally, disc 3 includes five episodes of "Ramar of the Jungle," Jon Hall's syndicated 1952-54 jungle adventure series that was rerun well into the 1960s, and 5 episodes of the historical adventure series "Northwest Passage" that ran on NBC during the 1958-59 season. "Northwest Passage" was produced by MGM and is one of the few television shows of the 1950s produced entirely in color. A short slide show of jungle adventure theatrical film posters concludes this disc.
This collection of episodes has been released by the St. Clair Entertainment Group, a Canadian company that has also offered similar packages titled "Police TV" and "Western TV," among others. With the exception of a number of the episodes from "Sir Lancelot," many of the episodes in this collection have been released by other companies specializing in public domain material, most notably Alpha Video. The source material is variable and can even differ dramatically among episodes from the same series. Those who are familiar with the type of material released by Alpha Video and other companies releasing public domain television programs will know what to expect, but those expecting studio quality, pristine prints are in for a big disappointment. All of the episodes are certainly watchable, and the comparatively low cost for this set coupled with the large number of episodes offered offsets the lesser visual quality somewhat.
Bottom Line: This is a value priced collection of entertaining adventure series that filled the nation's airwaves during the 1950s and early 1960s. These types of series are rarely produced anymore (Kevin Sorbo's "Hercules" series would be a modern-day equivalent), and the series selected for this collection provide a nice representation of the adventure series genre. "Classic Adventurers" is recommended, primarily, for classic/vintage TV fans and those who enjoy tales of olde.

Customer Reviews:
Exploring Central Africa.......2007-07-01
In the same way that no one would discuss Lewis without discussing Clark, this work is title "D. Livingstone," but as soon as you turn on the disc, it says "Stanley and Livingstone." The first sixth of the work is dedicated entirely to Stanley, rather than Livingstone.
The actors play the explorers with a background of ferns that you can buy at the local supermarket, rather than anything that looks like a real African jungle. The narrator says that in the 19th century, Africa was divided by the Arabs, the Dutch, and the Portuguese. Hello! What about France?! Why are Mali, Senegal, the Congo, and many other countries Francophone if their description of Africa is true? This work only records one scholar, rather than the handful one sees in most documentaries.
At one point, the work shows a drawing of Stanley, a little African boy in front of him, and an Indian man in front of both of them. There is an actual photograph of the three in Robert Aldrich's "Colonialism and Homosexuality." According to that book, Stanley may have had a pederastic relationship with the young male, but this documentary says nothing on the topic.
The scholar says that Livingstone opposed slavery and treated Africans as equal. The narrator says Stanley fought on both sides of the U.S. Civil War. As an African American, when the documentary concludes by saying Livingstone is buried in Westminster Abbey, but Stanley was considered too mean and nasty for that honor, I was pleased.
The documentary does a great job in showing all the places the two men traveled and thus their ability to explore uncharted African becomes understandable. If you ever wanted to know why "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" is a phrase that people know more than a century after its utterance, than this is for you.
Not Great.......2006-11-18
I wish there would have been a review on this before I purchased it. The acting is poor (unless you want a laugh) and the setting is obviously not taking at all in Africa. There is one interview with some historian with a pony tail, red suit, and wild tie. If it weren't for the non-intended comedy, I would have fallen asleep.
It is also amazing how there is so little focus on David Livingstone's religion or influence.
Do not purchase this documentary!
