Friday is the rarest specimen of African American cinema: a 'hood movie refreshingly free of the semiseriousness and moralism of shoot 'em up soaps such as Boyz N the Hood, yet still true to the inner-city experience.

Scripted by rapper Ice Cube, Friday is a no-frills tale of a typical day in the life of a pair of African American youth in South Central. Cube plays Craig, a frustrated teen who endures the ultimate humiliation: getting fired on his day off. Then unknown Chris Tucker plays Smokey, a marijuana-worshipping homeboy whose love for the green stuff lands him in predicament after predicament.

Sitting on the stoop of Craig's rundown home, the two hilariously confront a kaleidoscopic array of gangbangers, weed dealers, crack heads, prostitutes, scheming girlfriends, and neighborhood bullies--all of whom, it should be noted, come off as sympathetic even as they are being caricatured, a true achievement in the crass, "booty call" environment of '90s African American comedy. --Ethan Brown

5 out of 5 stars Very funny movie.......2007-05-21

This is a great movie...simiple...funny...just a day in the life of some young guys who are bored. Most people can relate.

4 out of 5 stars "Can I borrow y'all VCR? I need to dub a tape...".......2007-03-01

I've seen this movie many and I mean many times. It's very funny and it simply shouldn't be analyzed. A plot doesn't exist in this comedy, nor is this a character-driven vehicle, but it's a wild ride from start to finish without much of a high budget.

"Friday" is an urban comedy that depicts a single day in the life of Craig (Ice Cube), who has just been fired on his day off. Craig's off day consists of interactions with various characters in the neighborhood. They include his cantankerous dad (John Witherspoon); his lovable mother (Anna Maria Horsford); his sister Dana (Regina King); his spoilt girlfriend Joi (Paula Jai Parker); his love interest (Nia Long); Deebo (Tiny "Zeus" Lister Jr.) the hulking neighborhood bully; Big Worm (Faizon Love) the neighborhood gangster; and his token friend Smokey (Chris Tucker).

There's not a lot that can be said about the acting and most of the help comes from the supporting characters. Such as, Chris Tucker who steals the show with his landmark role as ultra-pothead Smokey. Tucker has that unrelenting comic energy that only a comedian of supreme talent can possess. Even when the film falls flat, he picks you back up. I also have to commend John Witherspoon, as Ice Cube's father. I loved him on "The Wayans Bros." and I loved him in this movie. Though I was laughing most of the time, the gags are indeed crude--very crude. And sometimes that crudeness just wears out. Luckily, it's not too often, and there are some memorable lines and memorable moments in "Friday."

I feel as though this is one of the better movies about the hood. It' really more than just a comedy instead it puts forth a deeper meaning in life. It is about facing one's fears and becoming a man. In one scene, the father sees Craig with a gun and tells him that holding a gun won't make him man; it's having the courage to fight with his fists that will. Now, I know this doesn't sound like the greatest thing for a parent to be telling his kid, but in the projects fighting with one's hands instead of picking up a gun is courageous. This movie is great to own as well as the Ice Cube-based sound track.

5 out of 5 stars awww my neck!.......2007-02-27

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-01-07

This movie is one of the Classics for anyone that was a teenager or in their early 20's back in the mid 90's. Its almost a have to have for the DVD Collection. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Instant Classic - Made Chris Tucker a star................2007-01-02

What would life be without your slacker homeboys? It seems like they take life less serious and have all of the fun. At least that's what this hood classic is about when Craig gets fired on his day off for allegedly stealing boxes. So Smoke Dog comes to save the day with a little of that sticky icky. Problem is that the weed belongs to Big Worm. The rest is hood comedy at its finest.

DJ Pooh steals the show as the lame who gets punked by Debo. Hilarious!

Manic energy and an agreeable level of comic insanity turn Just Friends into the kind of brainless comedy you can enjoy as a modest guilty pleasure. If you liked director Roger Kumble's previous comedy The Sweetest Thing (and let's face it, that movie had some really funny moments), chances are you'll get at least a few solid belly-laughs from this not-so-high-concept premise, in which a formerly fat high-schooler named Chris (Ryan Reynolds) is transformed, ten years later, into a womanizing music executive with a high-profile client (Anna Faris) in the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera mold. As it zips along with some broad-stroked slapstick and snappy one-liners, the screenplay by Adam Tex Davis contrives to reunite Chris with Jamie (Amy Smart), the former cheerleader who was the great, unrequited love of Chris' miserable high-school life. By his narcissistic logic, he'll seduce her by treating her badly (i.e. she'll want what she thinks she can't have), but he gets unexpected competition in the form of a "Mr. Sensitive" type (Chris Klein, from American Pie), and it's pretty much Hollywood formula from there on, as Just Friends loses momentum without losing its basic appeal. And while Reynolds invests his character with an unexpected degree of emotional nuance, Faris (Scary Movie 3) pulls out all the stops, going deliriously over-the-top to maintain her reputation as a rising comedy starlet with a (hopefully) promising future. We're not talking rocket science here, folks... just sit back, take off your thinking cap, and have some fun. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Funny all the way through!.......2007-06-30

This is a great movie. The casting is right on. Anna Farris is perfect as the spoiled, shallow pop diva. Ryan Reynolds is always funny. Chris Klein was an unexpected pleasant surprise. Julie Hagerty is always a treat.

We have shown this to a variety of our friends and all of them have loved it.

Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Very underrated movie.......2007-06-28

Its amazing how a movie this good could come out with so little buzz. From start to finish you'll be laughing. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy Movie!!!.......2007-06-18

Great comedy!

This movie had me laughing almost the entire time. Anna Faris gives an amazing performance in this movie as a ditzy pop wanna-be singer. The rest of the cast is amazing in this movie as well. The story is very good and many could relate to it, specially if you've had a crush on someone in high school and you always felt like you were never good enough, unless you were rich, famous, and thin. This is defiantly a good comedy and revolves around the holidays but it's not just another holiday comedy either.

I have this movie as my top favorite films of all times. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean. great movie at a great value!

The shipping was fast, and the DVD was in great condition. This DVD has a great variety of DVD extras. You'll also get to see a lot of behind the scenes and a writer's journey on how to become an actor for a small role in the movie. It's a great DVD with lots to offer and it will keep you entertained through out the whole movie and special features as well.

I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars JUST FRIENDS IS JUST HILARIOUS!.......2007-06-13

This is the second movie I've watched with Ryan Reynolds in it in a short while. This movie is every bit as good as "Waiting" if not better. A quirky romantic comedy that is funny and has some heart. The DVD transfer is excellent and there are some very funny and interesting extras.

5 out of 5 stars Love Ryan Reynolds.......2007-06-08

Just a good fun movie. I love his sense of humor. I could and did watch it over and over again.

Ali G addicts have been fretting over the British comedian's spiraling popularity. As word of his outrageous celebrity interviews spreads--the deer-in-the-headlights gaze of his victims as they wrestle with incredulity over his audacious stupidity is itself always worth the price of admission--his pool of potential victims naturally diminishes. Not to worry: Ali G as a character has enough flexibility to make the leap to full-length film. The transition is far from perfect: few moments in Ali G Indahouse can match the unforced hilarity of Da Ali G Show. The film's biggest drawback, in fact, is the absence of the real-life personalities we know from the interview format; it's the friction between them and comic actor Sacha Baron Cohen's imposter shtick that generates so many howlers. Ali G Indahouse, in contrast, hangs on a silly plot. The setup of fictional characters interacting with Ali G simply can't have the same payoff.

Said plot is nothing more than a vehicle to subject the hip-hop poseur to a variety of ridiculous situations. He finds himself the unexpected champion in a parliamentary election and has to deal with the devious plotting of the Machiavellian Chancellor of the Exchequer (played by Charles Dance, who undergoes all manner of extreme humiliation). The result is a mix of Dumb and Dumber and Leslie Nielsen-esque pratfalls, with a hint of the Peter Sellers character in Being There. A good deal of the intended irony falls flat, and the litany of dated jokes calculated to offend all over the spectrum gets tiresome: from raunchy malapropisms to Ali G's recurrent obsession with being perceived as gay. But Baron Cohen's genius for getting under the skin of his creation remains undiluted. One aspect of special interest to Ali G fans is the light Ali G Indahouse throws on topics that are always behind the scenes in the Ali G Show context. We actually see Ali's Nana and his crib in suburban Staines, and "me Julie" (Kellie Bright) becomes a focal point as the story unwinds. Genial Borat makes an appearance (and gets dissed by Ali); we even learn the secret origin of Ali G's name (an abbreviation of Alistair Graham). It all might add up to a guilty pleasure, but hey--check yaself before ya wreck yaself. --Tom May

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing. .......2007-06-19

Well, I'm very surprised to see that this movie received as many 5 stars ratings as it did, perhaps my negative reaction to it was misguided. I have to say, and make no mistake about it, Sacha Baron Cohen is top dog when it comes to comedy so that people would buy the DVD is a given. I'm about to get Season 2 of the Ali G show in the mail and I'm sure I'll love it as much as I did Season 1. The only words that I can use to describe the movie Borat are "total joy." There's not many movies better, but the same can't be said about Indahouse. As a vehicle for his talent, this flick was a Yugo. I found it incredibly boring and I was extremely disappointed. In fact I turned it off after 50 minutes. There are no interviews (which is what made his show so great) and there is no Borat or Bruno to add to the hilarity. I'd say to take a pass on this one. Actually, if Cohen wasn't in it I'd give it only 1 star.

3 out of 5 stars bought as a gift.......2007-06-15

2 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars!.......2007-06-02

After watching Borat, and loving it. I decided to watch Ali G Indahouse. From the hilarity of Borat, I expected Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G Indahouse to be just as funny, and entertaining, I was wrong. While Ali G provides some hilarious moments, there are too many slow spots in the movie. There were times I laughed by butt off, them other times the movie was so boring. If you loved "Borat" rent "Ali G Indahouse" it is not anywhere near as good as "Borat." 2 1/2 stars, worth a rental!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!.......2007-05-10

Hilarious and corny. From the genius who created Borat. Ali G!!!

Big-it up.

1 out of 5 stars You are warned! Very bad!.......2007-03-22

As a big fan of the Ali G series and the movie Borat I bought this DVD.

Horrible, Horrible Horrible.

Think of any cheesy 80's movie and this compares. Overall this movie is as bad as the pathetic Saturday Night Live movies. Remember the bad ones? Stuart Saves His Family (Al Franken), It's Pat (Julia Sweeney), The Coneheads, A Night At the Roxbury, Superstar (Molly Shannon). The Ladies Man (Tim Meadows) was a great cable viewing experience compared to this.

Borat worked because it was a collection of skits loosely tied together, Ali G was a pathetic attempt at cinema.

Topnotch casting fails to conceal a pointlessly tortuous and essentially empty Sam Shepard conceit; it's basically a rehash of themes from better Shepard plays about guilty secrets buried in the past. In this 1999 movie, Jeff Bridges plays Lyle, a slick Kentucky horse breeder about to make a career-topping sale of a prospective Derby winner (the title character, as it were). Lyle's youthful crony, Vinnie (Nick Nolte at his scuzziest), phones in from Rancho Cucamonga, California, with a blackmail threat--he'll reveal their shared secret unless Lyle helps him sort out his goofy love life. Lyle drops everything and heads west; Vinnie promptly steals Lyle's car, and essentially his identity, and drives east. Lyle's well-oiled existence starts coming apart; Vinnie meanwhile cleans up his act and struts his stuff among the racing set. Oh, the irony of it all.

In his filmmaking debut, British theater director Matthew Warchus strains to "cinematize" the play. This mostly means relentless crosscutting, with not only Lyle's and Vinnie's journeys being overlapped, but also fragmentary flashbacks in which the teenage Lyle, Vinnie, and Lyle's haunted wife (Sharon Stone) are played by Liam Waite, Shawn Hatosy, and Kimberly Williams. Only Albert Finney, as a racing official implicated in their old scam, appears in both time frames--with unintentionally grotesque results.

The complicated editing can't conceal that there's nothing complex, or compelling, about the characters' sins. Stone doesn't show up till the third act (a ploy that worked better onstage), and is outshone by the always-intriguing Catherine Keener playing the sweet-natured dim bulb who has lately won Vinnie's heart. 2 out of 5 stars HORSIN AROUND.......2005-02-18

You would think with such a pedigree of talent (four Oscar nominees), SIMPATICO would come charing out of the gates and knock you over! Beautifully filmed in Kentucky and California, the movie however is merely a cinematic version of one of playwright Sam Shepard's character studies. It's plot is so convoluted and erratic, it's hard to keep up with. And the twists the movie takes, most notably the seeming reversal of the two male characters, it becomes annoying in its duplicity. Credit goes to Albert Finney and Catherine Keener particularly for at least trying to flesh out otherwise cardboard characters. Sharon Stone doesn't show up until the movie's almost over, and we get to see her do her sleazy alcoholic hasbeen role once again. Ditto to Nick Nolte, who seems to have made a career playing scruffy looking nobodies. Even the usually reliable Jeff Bridges gets lost in the muddled film. I don't know what I was expecting, but SIMPATICO doesn't win, place or even show for me.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Movie!.......2004-09-28

What a terrible, ponderous, senseless movie. With Sharon Stone touted in the cast, one would at least hope for some attractiveness in the film, but she was painted with some kind of lip wound, and make-up did their best to hide her beauty. Nick Nolte was the typical anti-social drunk/druggie that he often plays, and Bridges was as hapless as he usually is. There was no identification with anyone in this movie, neither sympathy or pity, except, perhaps, for the horse. Skip this one; there is nothing positive or redemptive about it!

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Enough to Watch, But..........2004-05-14

The plot and the characters become incomprehensible about midway through the film. About three quarters of the way through, I was thinking, "What is the point of this movie?" Then, for no particular reason, Sharon Stone shoots a horse (a big "what the...?" moment). Finally, the ending left me with an "I don't get it" feeling.

Nolte and Bridges made the film watchable and interesting for a while. But when Bridges' character suddenly changes his personality and starts acting just like Nolte's character for no good reason (I guess it was supposed to have some deep symbolic meaning, but it means nothing when it's totally arbitrary and illogical and unbelievable given the premises of the story), I thought it might be time to give up on Simpatico and try another DVD. I should have.

2 out of 5 stars Strange.......2003-05-31

Summary:
Vincent "Vinny" T. Webb (Nick Nolte; Young Vinnie Webb - Shawn Hatosy) is an alcoholic with a guilty conscience. Years ago he and his best friend, Lyle Carter (Jeff Bridges; Young Lyle Carter - Liam Waite), rigged some horse races with the help of Lyle's now wife, Rosie (Sharon Stone; Young Rosie - Kimberly Williams (I)). But rigging the races isn't what the guilty conscience is from. The racing commissioner (Albert Finney) caught on to what they were doing. So the three friends set him up; Rosie had sex with him while Vinny took pictures. They then used the pictures to get him to keep quiet while they won their final race. After the last race, Rosie took off with Lyle, even though Vinny wanted to marry her.

Vinny has kept the pictures for roughly 20 years as a means of controlling Lyle. Lyle went on to make something of himself, becoming quite wealthy and continuing to participate in horse racing. He even lives in Kentucky now, near the location of the Kentucky Derby. He married Rosie who has developed a love for horses, especially the one the story is named after - Simpatico. Whenever Vinny needs anything, he calls up Lyle and, because Vinny still has the evidence from their crime so many years ago, Lyle has to concede to whatever Vinny wants.

Well, that's all just the backstory, which takes the whole movie to figure out. The movie actually begins when (this is my interpretation) Vinny can't take the guilt anymore and decides to play his hand by giving the pictures to someone (he tries to give them to the racing commissioner to clear his name and to Rosie, but both refuse). To clear the way for him to get them to Rosie he tricks Lyle to fly out to California saying he is in trouble. He isn't really but ends up stealing Lyle's wallet, return flight pass, and cash and heading to Kentucky to try to get rid of the pictures. Once Lyle realizes what has happened he tries to send Vinny's current love interest, Cecilia (Catherine Keener), after him, but the realization of the havoc Vinny is likely to cause gets to him (again, my interpretation) and Lyle and Vinny temporarily switch roles with Vinny becoming the business man and Lyle the drunk. Now everyone involved has to come to terms with the past and the future that has resulted from it.

My Comments:
I'd like to meet Nick Nolte one day, perhaps follow him around and see what he is really like. Has he ever played a role where he was sober the whole time? I mean, the guy just seems to get typecast into the role of a drunk in every move he is in. Anyway, the acting in this movie is okay. So, too, is the cinematography. Nick Nolte and Jeff Bridges were pretty good, and so were all of the young counterparts and the racing commissioner. However, I didn't like the two women leads, - Sharon Stone and Catherine Keener. I think Catherine Keener was more convincing than Sharon Stone, but perhaps the reason I didn't like either of them that much wasn't so because there acting was so poor (I don't really think it was all that great), but because they were trying to play characters that just weren't working. Catherine was trying play a naive woman from California and Sharon was playing an embittered wife who was still fixated on a trick from 25-30 years ago.

This leads to the biggest problem I saw with the movie - the story. I guess it's kind of credible, but a major stretch. I wouldn't really know if people do these kinds of things; I've never done anything like it. But the responses of the main characters to the crime were, I don't know, not fitting. I guess theoretically it's possible that Vinny would take to drinking and not make anything of his life, same too for Rosie. But I doubt it. After 30 years or so you'd think people would get over it. Also, Lyle's response to Vinny heading to Kentucky made no sense either. I guess he was thinking that he was going to lose everything, but instead of trying to go to Kentucky to stop him, he gets sloshed and tries to hide from the world. It just didn't make any sense. Overall, the movie is kind of interesting just because all of the characters are screwed up, but the unconvincing storyline kind of ruins the movie.

One final thing - what's the big deal with the Kentucky Derby? I live less than 100 miles from where it takes place and everyone I talk to (definitely a biased sample, I recognize that) seems to think that it's kind of silly. Why all the mystique about it in the movie? I've never been and have no intention of going.

Anyway, this is one that you could miss and not feel bad about having done so. It definitely didn't leave a lasting impression on me and unless someone asks me about it, I highly doubt I'll be talking about it again.

4 out of 5 stars Buried Secrets Unearthed.......2003-03-04

This review refers to the New Line Home Video DVD edition of "Simpatico".......

Successful Kentucky horsebreeder, Lyle Carter(Jeff Bridges) is just about to make the deal of his life, when his past comes back to haunt him. A phone call from old friend Vinny Webb(Nick Nolte) puts the Kabash on everything. The cryptic call has all the sounds of blackmail! Lyle puts everything on hold and rushes out to California, to "help out" his old friend. Vinny has a plan though, that leaves Lyle alone and paranoid. Paranoid, that Vinny will spill the goods on a crime that along with "Rosie"(Sharon Stone),the three committed more than 20 years earlier.

The story of corruption in the horse racing industry unfolds in a series of tense flashbacks, played intuitively by the younger counterparts of the three, Liam Waite, Shawn Hatosy, and Kimberly Williams. The memories that they have tried to bury come flooding back, along with the pain and guilt of the lives they ruined. Will they be able to cope with these secrets for the rest of their lives or will the deeds of the past destroy their lives?

I seem to be in the minority, but I was impressed with first time director Matthew Warchus' style. It drew me in right away with it's Noir-like qualities and intriguing characters. I've watched it several times and never seem to tire of it. It is based on Sam Shepard's play(which I haven't seen, so I can't compare the two). The great cast, I'm sure helps tremendously, but don't look for Sharon Stone until about an hour in. Albert Finney as the immoral victim of the scam is marvelous as always, but Catherine Keener as, Vinny's girlfriend, the somewhat naive but only honest person of the bunch, really steals the show with her superb performance.

If you like a good drama, with just a touch of humor and interesting character studies, this is a good one. With all the various degress of reviews here, you might want to rent it first(I also sometimes see that is is played on some of the cable movie channels) to see if you like it. If you have already seen it, and know you like it, I can tell you that the DVD looks and sounds great. From Churchill Downs to the outskirts of Southern California the colors and picture are an quality outstanding. You have the choice of widescreen or a fullscreen format(This choice pops up right before the start of the film). You can also choose between Dol Dig 5.1 or Stero surround(audio set-up for this).Don't look for too much in the way of "bonus" material. There is a theatrical trialer and filmographies of the stars. The only subtitles and language are English.

Give it a try and decide for yourself....thank you...Laurie

Ms. Fenn is wonderful to watch. The storyline was a complete original back then, at least to me. All through the movie I was not sure who would end up with who and thought it would be a cope out if Lynch's Lesbian Character ends up with Baldwin, they had good chemistry, unforunately nothing ends well but never give up on love.

4 out of 5 stars Sharing lives.......2001-07-13

Unexpecting: This movie relates the story of my life: two woman deeply in love, loving each other differently. One lives with the memory of a loss by watching movies recorded when they were living together. THe other loving her friend through her heart, but having an affair with her friends room mate, and in love with this guy. The ending is...

5 out of 5 stars One of The '90s Top Films.......2000-08-08

Very touching, very surprising. This is a strikingly original character study with stellar performances by Baldwin and Sherilyn Fenn, but the always intriguing Kelly Lynch steals the movie with her portrayal of a young gay woman with a brave heart of gold. Get two hankies, two buckets of popcorn and two good friends and you'll love it.

2 out of 5 stars Not for me.......2000-01-09

Based on Amazon's customer reviews I went out and rented this movie. I had to struggle to stay awake. While the performances were indeed good, the story felt forced and false. The best thing about this movie was Sherilyn Fenn's eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Lynch Is A Revelation.......2000-01-01

Performance by underappreciated Lynch is her best since "Drugstore Cowboy." This is one of the finest films of the '90s.

Owen McCabe (Paul Schneider, All the Real Girls) may be a nice guy, but he's a loser in love. Tired of rejection, the LA denizen decides to stop being so darn nice. After all, he's not bad looking and he has a decent job--he's a busy ghostwriter--so the nice-ness must be to blame. He starts by telling his friends what he really thinks about them. Except for his bisexual roommate, Allison (Poppy Montgomery, Without a Trace), this scares them away, but he decides he'll be better off. (As for Allison, he can't think of anything mean to say.) Just as he's enjoying his newfound freedom, Owen runs into Val (Jennifer Westfeldt, Kissing Jessica Stein), a friend on whom he's been harboring a crush. Turns out she feels the same and has also recently exited a long-term relationship. Owen decides to come clean and tell her he just wants to sleep with her, but doesn't get the chance. Consequently, she thinks he's...nice. Despite his best efforts, he can't convince her he's a cad. Val really likes him. What's a not-so-nice guy to do? The answer may not be surprising, but first-time director Jordan Hawley throws a few unexpected twists and turns into the mix before coming out on the side of nice-ness. Originally titled 50 Ways to Lose Your Lover, this fresh-faced romantic comedy features Fred Willard as Owen's ornery client and Tori Spelling as Allison's black-clad lover. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars It's all in here..........2007-01-22

Jordan Hawley's `How to Lose Your Lover' is my kind of movie - all about brainy self-examination, funny, and full of twists. For me it's genuinely original - goodbyes are always about fake warm feelings, not burning bridges. Enjoy the psychosis, the antics, the irreverence and the decadence - but when it counts there is real heart in here, too. Setting this sort of thing in LA is something I've never seen. I want to call Hawley `West Coast Woody'. Has any movie celebrated the buildings and landmarks of LA in the same way?

3 out of 5 stars How to lose your interest...........2006-09-16

Jordan Hawley wrote and directed this dark 'comedy' about the current state of love/hate relationships in Los Angeles (or inability to create same) with about as much panache as yesterday's onion rings. The storyline has been used so many times that the tread is off the tires.

LA ghostwriter Owen (Paul Schneider) is a 'nice guy' who sustains an inability to form a satisfactory love relationship. Exasperated with his life style he decides to become a cad: that must be what women (and men) want. He reverses his nice guy tactic and begins telling everyone he encounters just how he feels - and that is usually negative! The only person who doesn't but into his change is his roommate Allison (Poppy Montgomery) who is bisexual and therefore not wholly available. He decides to leave Los Angeles and move to the East Coast where a lucrative deal awaits him to write the memoirs of a famous man. At the last moment he meets one Val (Jennifer Westfeldt), an animal activist: the chemistry is there but each has a conflicting program. Owen is honest with her, a factor that does not chase her away, but both part ways to other parts of the world. Upon return to LA after a disappointing experience on the East Coast, tables turn and surprises arise. And the ending is a mixture of silly and unsatisfying.

Movies like this are meant to entertain and some of the dialogue is clever albeit acerbic. It just that the idea of relationship examination under these terms is so worn out that the movie just doesn't spark any innovative thoughts. After about thirty minutes into the film this 'audience' lost interest. Grady Harp, September 06

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2006-03-27

I loved the movie. My wife, a friend and I watched it together and found ourselves laughing really hard. We also loved the relationships and character development and the great ending. A definite must for anyone who loves a good movie and loves to laugh!

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie! At least rent it!.......2006-03-21

I just watched this movie for the first time and I enjoyed the interesting twist that it takes on love. Paul Schneider's character is trying desparately to get out of LA and basically meets a girl at the last minute that changes his life and makes his escape much more difficult than even he could've imagined. It has funny, sad and sweet moments. If you like any of Paul Schneiders other movies (All the real girls, Elizabethtown) then I think you'd like this! He's a great actor I think he'll become an even bigger name in hollywood in the coming years. Enjoy the film with friends or a loved one it's a great flick to see with people you care about. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because it can get a slow at times, and quite dark. But the payoff at the end is certainly worth it, something you can see coming but you enjoy seeing the characters finally realize what we had known almost all along! Hope this helps!

5 out of 5 stars a fun sequel.......2004-12-09

As a Black Scorpion I think this a fun sequel that has everything I like about the Black Scorpion Tv series (which is available on DVD in an impressive collection): a strong and intelligent heroine, weird but wonderful bad guys, and lots of B-movie/comic strip action. Good fun!

4 out of 5 stars Return of Black Scorpion.......2004-04-27

When I saw that there was a movie called Black Scorpion 2 I knew that I would have to watch it right away as my wife and I had so enjoyed the first movie.

Joan Severance returns as Darcy Walker, policewoman by day and crime fighter by night. Although her partner has been recast, almost all of the faces from the first movie have returned, including Garret Morris as Argyle.

The film opens with Darcy tracking down the Gangster Prankster (sort of a cross between the Joker and Two-Face) and then busting him as Black Scorpion. Meanwhile a woman scientist has come up with a way to neutralize earthquakes and aftershocks. Unfortunately the Mayor enjoys the federal relief funds that quakes bring in so he sabotages her machine. The result is that it amplifies the quake and the scientist takes on the identity of Aftershock. It is up to Black Scorpion to make the streets safe again.

While not quite up to the level of the first film (the fight scenes are almost comical) it was still a fun film and I would recommend it to anyone who has seen the first Black Scorpion film. I definitely recommend these films to those who like the comic book film genre, although this is not intended for kids (ther is nudity and violence).

5 out of 5 stars when she's good she's good, but when she's bad she's better.......2004-04-22

Some say these type of movies are "bad" and sure they won't win an Oscar, but the Black Scorpion sure will entertain. The Black Scorpion is every cool superhero cliche wrapped up in one beautiful package. Um..Make that TWO beautiful packages. Joan Severance and Michelle Lintel have both played the role. Severance played the Scorpion in the original Black Scorpion movie, and in this sequel, and Lintel took over for the tv show. Who's better? Who cares! I like em both. A LOT! How could any red blooded male decide when you can enjoy em both over and over thanks to Roger Corman and DVD technology? Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars B-movie silliness.......2004-03-06

Don't expect a serious movie, but turn off your brain and enjoy the wonders of this flick. Sexy, silly, and worth your time if you love B-movies. I've got to give it five stars for fun.

5 out of 5 stars bad, but that's what makes it so good.......2004-01-14

The Black Scorpion movies and series are very funny and sexy and they aren't to be taken seriously, but are great escapism. The villans from this one return for the series which is now available on DVD and had Adam West and Frank Gorshin too! Watch these DVDs and enjoy the explosions, the beautiful women and laugh your butt off!

    Description

Even with his personal life out of control, no one commands the rave club audiences like deejay and ex-con Jason St. Julian (LL Cool J). That makes him the perfect target for ruthless cop Marcus Caldwell (Howard Hesseman) who forces Jason to become his eyes and ears at the dance club owned by drug dealing Danny Simon, the same man responsible for sending Jason to prison. While waiting for the big drug deal to go down, Jason flirts with danger every time he flirts with scintillating Monica Collins (Victoria Dillard), Danny's main squeeze. Even in a world of conscienceless hit men, cutthroat cops and sadistic drug lords, Monica is the most dangerous player of all. This suspenseful, action-packed film pioneers an exciting new genre of hip hop film noire where the only thing that moves faster than the music is the plot.

3 out of 5 stars Little-Seen Thriller Starring LL Cool J--.......2006-12-04

Out of Sync was a mid 1990's film that was set up as a vehicle for LL Cool J (James Todd Smith), and following New Jack City and Deep Cover, it follows in the African-American themed "Urban Noir" sub-genre of crime thrillers. The film was produced independently (the BET network was involved with financing), it was given limited release in 1995 (apparently, one copy was made, shopped around to several major urban markets over the course of a few months) before eventually showing up on home video. The film was directed by Debbie Allen (the former Fame actress who became a prolific TV director, and who has a cameo here) and also co-produced by Tim Reid (Venus Flytrap on WKRP in Cincinnati). Here, LL plays Jason "The Saint" St. Julian, a popular hip-hop nightclub DJ who became a mainstream MTV-style celebrity, but who fell on hard times when his drug abuse got out of control. At this point, he's living in a run-down apartment, owes money to a loan shark, and because no clubs will hire him, he's forced to DJ illegal rave gigs for cash.
A cop named Caldwell (Howard Hesseman) crashes Jason's latest party, and at the police station, gives him an offer--become a police informant on a drug dealer the police are targeting, or go to jail. Jason agrees to the deal, and soon ends up the personal DJ for the lavish parties that a prominent drug dealer, Danny, gives--only, he also winds up being caught in the spell of Monica Collins (Victoria Dillard), the drug lord Danny's current girlfriend. Eventually, Jason finds out that Monica is the sister to a former girlfriend of the gangster, and she intends on getting revenge--so Jason is torn--does he continue to inform on his boss and risk being killed, or does he continue his flirtation with Monica and risk being killed? Seemingly, his only other option is jail time--and of course, there's still the matter of ducking the loan shark. As in many such films, friends and enemies are not always what they seem.

All the actors do a decent job, given the low-budget circumstances. Dillard as the femme fatale is very pretty, and yes, she does get a love scene with the hero. Other actors in the film include Yaphet Kotto ("Homicide: Life on the Street", "Running Man") as Quincy, bar owner and a friend to Jason's late father who gives him friendly advice; also, future Mad TV actor Aries Spears plays Jason's buddy Frank.

Trivia: At the time, Allen and LL were co-stars on the sitcom In the House, which lasted 1 and ½ seasons on NBC before moving to UPN (where Allen's character was dropped).

This is an Okay Movie for LL Cool J. This is really early in his movie career so you can see his comfortable transition to the screen. I liked Ariel Spears as his buddy. The plot was mediocre and Victoria Dillard played her part well, but her I realized her outcome by the scene at the disco with her boyfriend the drug dealer

4 out of 5 stars Truth of story........2002-08-14

This is a real good movie. In the tradition of Tougher than
Leather, with Run-DMC. Some real Hip Hop flavors to enjoy.
And if you like L.L. Cool J, then this is the right movie
    for you, I loved it. It's B-Boyish, it's hardcore, it's
down to earth, it's all that. It has lots of personality
and some great film shots, of how the streets really look.

    5 out of 5 stars WHO'S PLAYIN' WHO.......2000-02-16

I THOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS REALLY GREAT, SENSUAL, AND A REAL BACK STABBER. YOU NEVER KNEW WHO WAS PLAYIN' WHO, UNTIL THE VERY END. IT WAS ONE OF LL COOL J'S BEST FLICKS. I SUGGEST YOU BUY IT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF. IT'S A SHAME THIS MOVIE DIDN'T GET THE PROPER RESPECT FROM THE MOVIE INDUSTRY. I ALSO ENJOYED THE SOUNDTRACK. UNFORTUNATELY, I CAN'T FIND IT (YET). BUT I'LL KEPP ON SEARCHING. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN GET MY HANDS ON A COPY, JUST E-MAIL ME AT DDSTeach@MSN.COM
