Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 multiple-Oscar winner (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley) is an engrossing, reverential look at the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who introduced the doctrine of nonviolent resistance to the colonized people of India and who ultimately gained the nation its independence. Kingsley is magnificent as Gandhi as he changes over the course of the three-hour film from an insignificant lawyer to an international leader and symbol. Strong on history (the historic division between India and Pakistan, still a huge problem today, can be seen in its formative stages here) as well as character and ideas, this is a fine film. --Tom Keogh

The Films of Ben Kingsley

Description

A critical masterpiece, GANDHI is an intriguing story about activism, politics, religious tolerance and freedom. But at the center of it all is an extraor- dinary man who fought for a nonviolent, peaceful existence, and set an entire nation free. Winner of 8 Academy Awards® including Best Picture, Best Director (Lord Richard Attenborough) and Best Actor (Sir Ben Kingsley), GANDHI's highly acclaimed cast also includes Candice Bergen, Edward Fox, Sir John Gielgud, Roshan Seth and Martin Sheen.

The extras include more than 90 minutes of new material, including interviews with director Lord Richard Attenborough; actors Geraldine James, Saeed Jaffrey, and Edward Fox; Diana Hawkins (Director of Publicity), Terry Clegg (Executive in charge of production), Billy Williams (Cinematographer) and Stuart Craig (Production Designer). The DVD includes a Director's commentary with Attenborough, who also filmed a personal introduction to the film. The featurettes include In Search of Gandhi, Reflections on Ben, Madeleine Slade: An Englishwoman Abroad, The Funeral, Shooting an Epic In India, Looking Back, Designing Gandhi (3 mini featurettes) and From the Director's Chair (2 mini featurettes).

5 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Giant Who Left His Mark In History.......2007-06-03

In one of the interviews with Ben Kingsley, he expressed great apprehensiveness and even reluctance to play Mahatma Gandhi. "Nobody can play this man," he'd stated. After a while, he gave it some more thought and finally decided to accept the role. Thankfully, his decision would bring one of the best and most memorable acting performances ever shown on the silver screen. It was a no-brainer that he won the Oscar for Best Actor that year, and that "Gandhi" won for Best Picture.

Martin Luther King Jr once stated about Gandhi, "I have found it challenging at times to live by the words of Jesus, but Gandhi proved it can be done."

This beautiful autobiography of the "Mahatma" or "Great Soul" (a title bestowed upon him by the people of India and not by himself) demonstrates how one man conquered a nation through love and non-violence instead of hatred and war. Gandhi understands that to stand up to the fear and hatred in others, you must first conquer the fears of yourself. A master teacher of ALL religions, he recognized the spiritual paths of all men, and put into practice the universal teachings of peace, love, forgiveness, and brotherhood; teachings that every great master and saint has ever taught.

Richard Attenborough directed this magnificent story that opens with his assassination. This was a brilliant move, on his part. He shows how Gandhi dies, but immediately focuses on his extraordinary life. Filmed in India with wonderful performances by both Western and Eastern performers, they collaborated together to bring this film to life.

Ben Kingsley plays Gandhi in such a true and humble way. He brings Gandhi to life and endows him with the characteristics and personality that I have read so much about. Paramahansa Yogananda (a great Master from India who came to the U.S.) spent some time with Gandhi at his hermitage and wrote about the experience in "Autobiography of a Yogi." Some of Gandhi's ashes were also given to him were they now lie at rest in Lake Shrine, California.

Every actor, whether they have a small part or a large one, brought their best for this film. You can see that in their performances. Martin Sheen looks as if he's sitting next to he real Gandhi. Perhaps that isn't far of a stretch, if the spirit of Gandhi was indeed working through Ben Kingsley.

It is simply amazing how Gandhi was able to persuade the people of India into non-cooperation with the British. Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" coincides beautifully with Gandhi's actions. "We want to see the British off as our friends, not our enemies," explains Gandhi.

The film is over three hours in length, and every time I watch it, I feel as if I've had a spiritual experience. I can understand why he was given the title of "Mahatma." Albert Einstein may have said it best in a quote that is given at the very beginning of this movie, "Few people will scarcely believe that any one in flesh and blood ever walked the face of this Earth."

5 out of 5 stars Ghandi.......2007-05-08

A great movie with a wondeful lesson that needs to be practiced to a degree by everyone in this country and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding movie!.......2007-04-19

I watched this movie when it first came out in the theaters. Being Indian and watching it at such a young age was definitely a memory I will never forget. I've seen it since over a dozen times and love it every time. I was ecstatic to see they finally made a two disc special edition one and grabbed it. This movie will live on for centuries, and I really think it's high time someone makes just as symbolic a movie of Martin Luther King Jr. so that children of this time can have a movie to cherish for in centures to follow!

4 out of 5 stars Chinese extras menu?!?!?!?.......2007-04-17

Hey, the extras disc has menus in Chinese..they still work, and you can view all the stuff, but you have to guess at what each menu option will do...anyone else get this?

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant film; surely one of Attenborough's best!.......2007-04-10

When I first saw this film in 1982, it reminded me of one of David Lean's epics. Like Lawrence of Arabia or Dr. Zhivago, it tells a story of nations and political movements from the perspective of a single person. The cast is top notch, the acting is superb (Ben Kingsley is amazing in this role), and the photography is gorgeous.

So it's a must-see film, but what about the dvd? In a word, terrific! The sound and color all look wonderful, and the extra features are informative. I cannot say how this dvd edition compares to the one that came out about five years ago, but if you don't already own a dvd copy of this film, you won't be disappointed with this one.

5 out of 5 stars About Time.......2007-07-03

I too, have been waiting a long time for this. FYI, for the first reviewer, "Texas Refugee", you did a nice job with your review, but Judy and Mickey's first picture was "Love Finds Andy Hardy". I also second the reviewer who asks that the Hardy films need to be on DVD. Judy was only the best triple threat (dance, sing, act) in the history of the universe. Damn shame her mother got her hooked on pills

With sidesplitting dialogue and rampant profanity, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back reunites Kevin Smith's dynamic duo in supreme lowbrow style. It's the fifth comedy in Smith's celebrated New Jersey "trilogy." Here Quick-Stop potheads Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) wreak vengeance on Hollywood, where Miramax is making a "Bluntman & Chronic" feature inspired by J. and S.B., but without their permission. En route from Jersey to La La Land, Jay and his "hetero life mate" encounter sexy jewel thieves (including the delightful Shannon Elizabeth), a precocious orangutan, a dimwit wildlife marshal (Will Ferrell), and a nonstop parade of in-jokes, harmless (yet controversial) gay jokes, and splendid celebrity cameos. While gently biting the Miramax hand that feeds him, and paying affectionate homage to the Star Wars saga, Smith sheds all inhibitions to give Jay and Silent Bob a stellar sendoff that's nasty, sassy, and undeniably hilarious. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Packed with stars including Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING), Chris Rock (NURSE BETTY), Shannon Elizabeth (AMERICAN PIE), Jason Lee (ALMOST FAMOUS), and more, this wildly irreverent comedy is actor/director Kevin Smith's hilarious finale to the adventures of Jay and Silent Bob that began in CLERKS and ran through MALLRATS, CHASING AMY, and DOGMA! When best buddies Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) discover that a major motion picture is being based on their likenesses, they head for Hollywood to claim the big movie money they deserve. But when the dopey duo learn that they've been cut out of the cash, they set out to sabotage the flick at all costs! Featuring a host of celebrity cameos set to a hot hit soundtrack, Jay and Silent Bob's raucous cross country road trip is a crash course in the rules of the road with a nonstop assortment of outrageous characters that will have you laughing out loud!

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith...........2007-05-26

Is the man. If you do not like any of his work (humor) then you should not watch this movie. However, if you can seperate yourself from the type of humor he writes, then you can enjoy the slapshot, twisted, backwards humor he brings to this particular type of movie (series of movies) he has written and acted in. However, most anyone could find something to complain about if you take it too seriously.
I love his work!!!! Clerks II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)Clerks (Collector's Series)Dogma (Special Edition)Mallrats (10th Anniversary Extended Edition)Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-22

this is a great and funny movie, but since a lot of the jokes are inside jokes, you should definetley pick up kevins other movies first, clerks , chasing amy , mallrats, and dogma, which all feature jay and silent bob

5 out of 5 stars Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back........2007-01-05

A great film, All-star cast. A fun trip in the life of two great men from the East coast JERESY REWLZ!!! If you liked Mall Rats or Clerks you'll love this movie!

5 out of 5 stars That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously. Stopping the flick isn't gonna stop that. .......2006-12-17

Kevin Smith proved with J.S.B.S.B. that he is no longer just a glorified independent film maker. In past films, Kevin Smith seemed to have a limited appeal, mostly among arm-chair directors (such as myself)who had become jaded with the Hollywood film industry, but with his slap-stick-like middle finger to the movie industry he seems to have branched out and struck a note with the "MTV audience" (10 to 16 year olds). Smith's grade-school humor, delivered mostly by Jay, is nothing new to previous movies, but with the focus on Jay & Silent Bob this humor became more evident AND more inviting to a younger audience.

Nonetheless, Smith has not alienated his core audience who are, "...over and underweight guys who can't get laid." (See Holden McNeil in "Chasing Amy"). The simple visual affects, as in his past movies, are FAR overshadowed by the fantastic dialogue he writes which has Hollywood stars chomping at the bit to deliver. If anything, the only disappointment was a very thin plot. But as he did in Mallrats, for what J.S.B.S.B. is lacking in plot, Smith sure as hell made up for it in laughs.

This movie junkie gives "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" a 5 out of 5.. And if you don't like that then you can get the F#@k out.

3 out of 5 stars Very funny beginning and end.......2006-09-25

Jay and Silent Bob discover that a comic book, Bluntman and Chronic, which was based on their lives, is being made into a movie. They are also introduced to the internet and the many thousands of people posting derogatory comments about the upcoming movie and the comic book. Too stupid to realize these people don't even know them and are commenting on their characters, Bluntman and Chronic. They decide to go to Hollywood to stop the movie from being made.

On their trip Jay falls in love with Justice played by Shannon Elizabeth. She and her three friends convince the guys to steal a monkey from a testing lab as an animal rights protest. The real reason is as a cover so the girls can steal diamonds from a nearby building. After stealing the monkey they are pursued by a federal wildlife marshal played by Will Ferrell.

The middle part with the jewel thieves and stealing the monkey almost grinds the film to a halt, it's that stupid. The beginning and the end however, are very funny. This a self-indulgant film but for me they were the funniest parts. I love inside jokes and people who can make fun of themselves. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are very good as themselves acting in Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season, as well as directors Gus Van Sant and Wes Craven. There are a lot of good cameos: George Carlin, Chris Rock, Judd Nelson, James Vander Beek, Jason Biggs and scene stealing from Star Wars legends Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammill.

The fight for women's voting rights has rarely been given as dramatic a treatment as in Iron Jawed Angels. Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry) and Frances O'Connor (Mansfield Park) star as second-wave suffragettes Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, who led the final fight for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Though the movie sometimes tries too hard to avoid the stigma of a period piece (the soundtrack features electric guitars, Swank has a steamy moment in a bathtub, and the editing is jagged and flashy), the mounting energy of the fight--and the increasingly nasty opposition--gains real momentum when a wartime picket line leads to Paul, Burns, and their sisters-in-arms being arrested on trumped-up charges and imprisoned. The actors--including Julia Ormond (Smilla's Sense of Snow), Angelica Huston (Prizzi's Honor, The Grifters), and Brooke Smith (Vanya on 42nd Street)--give fervent, determined performances. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars The suffragettes were never better.......2007-06-12

Just when you thought nobody could make an interesting and funny and compelling film version of the women's movement, along comes this picture.
It blends funky camera movements with stellar performances (watch out for Frances O'Connor) and songs by Lauryn Hill and Sarah Mclachlan that are a shocking but fitting surprise.
The movie can be gritty at times (the scenes in prison) and frustrating (watching these women's struggles) but it is very rewarding in the end. If you care at all about this time in history (or about women's history in general), you'll be grinning by the end of this movie.
The friendships and the hardships and the difficult decisions these women shared are depicted and acted like it's rarely been seen before.
I highly recommend this movie. It is edifying, stylistically different, realistic, and it has the added virtue of being entertaining and of making people care. It makes you wanna get up and go vote.

5 out of 5 stars Iron Jwaed Angels.......2007-06-08

This movie is excellent. I am a high school social studies teacher. Iron Jawed Angels' is great for teaching the 19th Amendment and during March (Women's History Month). This movie is required viewing for my students. I have designed questions and reflective discussion groups around the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Iron Jawed Angels.......2007-06-06

A riveting portrayal of Alice Paul and the women's struggle while demanding the right to vote. When I first saw this movie, it completely blew me away and I loved every moment of it (excluding the unnecessary romance and masturbation scene - but hey, it is from HBO). However, upon watching it again I find more problems with it as a feminist as well as from a filming standpoint. A lot of poor shots that attempt to recreate the action impact ideology that is so attached to American film. Definitely worth a watch if you get the chance.

4 out of 5 stars Strong film about a very Historic Era.......2007-05-27

Throughout time, history has proven itself to fill our imaginations with stories of perseverance and determination, only to find ourselves repeating the life lessons of our ancestors over and over again. Occasionally, an exceptional example to the contrary occurs, as we see in the woman's suffrage movement of the early 20th century. Iron Jawed Angels, HBO's dramatic and emotionally stirring fictional account of the trial and tribulations endured by the women activists involved in this fight, is a film that does just that. Released on DVD in the fall of 2004, the film reveals in the battle between traditonal culture and values, and a new class of bravado and progressivism that has endured for years benefiting both past and future activists of equal rights.

The film stars Hilary Swank as Alice Paul, a young defiant yet charismatic woman growing up in a time when most would rather see her role as a bright, contemporary leader regulated to cleaning the house and making the families dinner. Swank does neither, as we see her embark on a drama filled journey of conflict and betrayal to secure the voting rights for American woman and witness the pain and hardship all women involved in this movement are forced to endure. The film builds on this as it concludes with her quest finally ending with the passing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on August 26th, 1920.

At times, I did feel like I was given an intermission of sorts, as we witness theme transformations and plot deviations in the form of a less than stellar romance involving Swanks lead character and a widowed but determined Washington Post editor brilliantly portrayed by Patrick Dempsey. Francis O'Connor plays the remarkably likable but slightly vulnerable Lucy Burns, a sidekick of sorts who revels in the day she herself can settle down for marriage and a family to call her own. Legendary film veteran Angelica Houston tops off the films honors with her excellent and riveting portrayal of the leader of the National Woman's Suffrage Organization.
An excellent example of how everyday woman can bring about change and optimism in modern day society, I felt enlightened and somewhat motivated after viewing Iron Jawed Angels. Questions I had about the treatment of the activists had been answered, for I had no idea why Swank and her cohorts had been labeled the `Iron Jawed Angels' before seeing the film. Witnessing a scene in which Swank is held down in a confinement chair while forcibly feed liquid nourishment as to combat her fasting crusade and avoid a martyrdom, I now had a new found understanding of what it meant to truly dig in and fight for your beliefs.

Interestingly enough, discussions in my college Modern American History class that I've had the opportunity to be involved in have really helped in my understanding of how events of the past, even some that may seem trivial in comparison to modern day conflict, can take hold and shape how a culture looks at itself for generations to come. Minority based civil rights of the 1960's would prove a keen example of this, as African Americans could look into the past for one of the first times in our nations history and find role models in the woman that suffered unspeakable defiance in the face of ever changing and turbulent times.

Had it not been for the courage and determination of Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, along with hundreds if not thousands of other woman activists that held their ground and fought for suffrage rights, I believe that America would be less of a nation, one still involved in disagreement and inner turmoil over equal rights regardless of gender. Thank God for these women of the past that made history.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Workout.......2007-06-11

This DVD is great. I do it on my off days in between my longer workouts, and she really focuses on lower body.

    5 out of 5 stars SUPER Workout!!!!.......2007-04-01

I love this kickboxing video and recommend it for anyone trying to tone and lose weight. Janis has a fun sense of humor with her workout which makes her enjoyable to watch while working out. Also, her background credentials are reflected as she constantly reminds you how to correctly do a move. I definitely recommend this workout to all levels. The gloves provide a tougher workout for the intermediate to advance clients.

4 out of 5 stars If you want to work up a sweat, this DVD is for you........2007-03-28

Great workout. It's tough, but you will start to feel it right from the warm up. Luckily I already had some of the weighted boxing type gloves, but you may want to purchase some along with this workout because she uses them throughout most of it. It adds to the intensity. Great overall body workout. Janis is a good and instructor and is upbeat as well.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2007-03-27

This is a really good workout, definitely for more intermediate level exercisers. Janis is a scarily thin but highly motivational instructor. If you like kickboxing workouts you'll like this.

    4 out of 5 stars Go Janis.......2007-03-23

I really enjoy her videos, she doesn't hold back. This isn't for beginners, but once you are ready for it Strike Zone is a must have for kick boxing lover. What I didn't like was the time break down. She starts with a great 6 min warm up and then goes into cardio routines. They are not difficult to follow and she uses her own brand of weighted gloves. Unfortunately as far as I can tell you can not purchase these anywhere. I use Everlast and they are too big for me and they get entirely too sweaty. The cardio section is about 23 mins long. She then goes into target practice with her own target paddle, also not commercially available as far as I can tell. Even without the paddle or a partner you can get some good practice in. Following this she goes into strength training...This is why I gave this video 4 stars...this part was boring. The cool down is also too slow for my taste. Janis is a great instructor, she makes alot of noise and is encouraging. My only beef is she tends to say "ok this is going to be like a round house kick" when what she means is "this is a round house kick" there is no like about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-12

I recently retook a reminiscent fanatacism to Dragonball Z, and this box set was a great and easy way to know some items off my list for having a collection. The movies are good (Patricularly 'The World's Strongest') and the production vaule was way better than I was expecting (It's a surprisingly nice box, not made of cheap thin cardboard). All in all I would say tis is a great item to buy, and Amazon got it to me quickly, and it works perfectly!

    5 out of 5 stars A Good Buy.......2007-04-19

In this DragonBall Z Movie Box Set you get the first three DBZ movies, the Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, and The Tree of Might for a great price. The movies themselves are great and have interesting stories, but they do lack some of DBZ's best characters such as Vegeta.

In the Dead Zone, Goku and Piccolo must stop Garlic Jr., a monster who has immortality on his side. Gohan may need to help out to win this one...
The World's Strongest involves a mad scientist trying to steal Goku's body so he can rule the world. This movie contains very interesting fight scenes as do all of them. The Tree of Might threatens to suck the life out of Earth unless our heros stop it in the third movie. They'll have to defeat Turles, a saiyan, to do it though.

All three movies are some of the better DBZ movies and are together for a great price. For any fan of DBZ, buying this is a no brainer.

    4 out of 5 stars Good boxset.......2007-03-04

First of all I'm sick to death of funimation robbing the DBZ fans. That they know run out and buy the very first DBZ dvd that comes out. If your new to DBZ and just starting your collection then your going to love this deal. If you been a fan then you already own the Dead Zone and had to buy it twice because its added into this boxset. The three feature movies, which also happens to be the first three are; Dead Zone, The worlds strongest, Tree of Might.

The biggest problem with DBZ has to be the holes in the timeline. And if your famailiar with the series, then your going to catch this very quick. I'll give a brief review on each of the movies.

The Dead Zone is the first of the three. Goku's family is attacked and Gohan is kidnapped. Goku rushes into battle with no knowledge of his opponent. This results in an all out battle with a good story and an ever better ending. The japanese version plays the drunk song. I really do hate that song but when watching the english version, which doesnt contain it. The scene really does feel like it's missing something. Even those who never seen this are going to notice something just feels missing.

The second is the Worlds Strongest. Two scientist are on a mission for world domination. To put their plan in motion they need the world's strongest fighter. Decent story with good fight scenes. And a pretty good ending.

The final one is the Tree of Might. This one is my favorite of the three. Space pirates land on earth and their plan is to plant a tree that can destroy the earth. This one has the most action and the enemies aren't weak at all. The story is pretty good also.

The only problem in the stories which plagues almost all DBZ movies is the storylines aren't consistent. None of these events could have taken place because of several incidents in the series. I wont go into deep detail with it but if you watch the Saiyan Saga, which is now the Vegeta Saga you'll see what I mean. These funimation versions have all the original voices and are uncut. Free from pioneers vile influence. If your new to DBZ pick up the Vegeta saga first. Also check out Dragonball which is the prequel to this series. Those have some of the best battles in the series, such as Goku's first huge battle with Piccolo.

4 out of 5 stars Value Packed DBZ worth its value.......2007-03-02

First Let me say that the first Movie "Return my Gohan/Dead Zone" contains something I have never experienced from a DBZ movie DVD...A commentary track! Believe you-me, it is total and complete garbage. I expected to learn something about Dragonball from the commentary, but instead, I thought that the people watching Dragonball knows more about the series than the American VA's.

On the other hand, the remastering from the original Japanese movies were done well. I do believe that my uncut-Pioneer dubbed VHS tape of "Tree of Might" had much better VA work than the Funi-version. Tree of Might - Return My Gohan is more watchable in its original form, including the song that Gohan sings after he is drunk (something, something - I love Piccooro!), That was too cute, even so that Clamp could have came up with it and stick it in a Card Captor Sakura OVA.

The other two movies "Worlds Strongest" and "Tree of Might" are classics. Before Dragonball Z was an empire, these movies were up there with Project A-ko, Macross, Do you remember love? and Wings of Homenaise. If you are too young to remember those movies, go find them. That is what true anime story telling is based on, complex story lines NOT Jiggly girls.

Overall I think the best thing about this set is its value. You are getting three of the better DBZ movies for a decent price, much better than those AWFUL Cooler movies or Broli movies.

5 out of 5 stars Great movies at a great price.......2007-01-15

    Dragon Ball Z Movie Box

    INTRODUCTION:

Dragon Ball Z needs no introduction. Akira Toriyama's most popular series ever, the sequel to the original Dragon Ball, stands strong as one of the best anime series out there. With its share of fast-paced martial arts action, science fiction elements, and well-developed characters, it has more than stood the test of time.

When Toei Animation translated the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series to an animated format, they didn't copy Toriyama's storyline verbatim. They added in a number of filler sagas that didn't exist in the original manga as another way of pleasing the fans. This concept was taken one step further in the release of the Dragon Ball Z movies. The movies not only didn't exist in the original manga, they in most cases didn't even fit into the series continuity and existed purely for entertainment.

    OVERVIEW:

The Dragon Ball Z Movie Box features Dragon Ball Z Movies 1: Dead Zone, 2: The World's Strongest, and 3: The Tree Of Might. All three have been redubbed and now feature a more accurate Japanese subtitle track translated by Steven J. Simmons. All of these movies were previously issued on DVD by Pioneer, back when they had the rights to the series.

    REVIEW:

I'm a huge fan of the Dragon Ball Z series, but even I won't deny that the movies are hit and miss - and all too often on the short side. There are some great ones, and there are some weaker ones as well. The first three are some of the midway ones - not great, not horrible either. It's value that makes this set great - you get three movies for one low price. The movies are as follows.

    1) Return My Gohan/Dead Zone
Garlic Jr., a demon who is also the son of someone who once wanted the role of Kami but wasn't able to get it, is out for revenge. He aims to get the Dragon Balls and obtain immortality so he can conquer the world.

    2) The World's Strongest Warrior/The World's Strongest
Gohan teams up with Oolong to go Dragon Ball hunting. But the twosome is attacked during their outing. Piccolo, who comes to their rescue, goes missing. A mysterious scientist kidnaps Master Roshi and Bulma, and it's up to Goku and friends to put an end to their schemes.

    3) Earth's Ultimate Decisive Battle/The Tree Of Might
The Saiyan threat didn't end with the battle against Nappa and Vegeta. Turles, a lower-class Saiyan warrior, has come to earth. He aims to plant the Tree Of Might on Earth - a tree that sucks the life force out of a planet, for the sole purpose of preparation of fruit intended for the gods, which can give anyone an enormous strength boost. With his cronies in tow, Turles wages war against Goku and the Z-Fighters.

    OPINIONS:

Overall these are good movies. Not the best the series has to offer, but certainly not bad. The movies get a little repetitive (particularly the latter two), and on the short side, but all in all the good outweighs the bad. They're pretty entertaining from start to finish.

    OVERALL:

If you're a Dragon Ball Z fan, add this to your collection. It's too good a deal not to.

    EDITION NOTES:

This box is still fairly new. If you look in any major retailer with a decent Dragon Ball selection, you should find this.

5 out of 5 stars Yu Yu Hakusho Third Strike eps. 29-49 (no key chain).......2007-06-05

This is the beginning of the first battle in the darks tournament. Will Yusuke and his team survive I'll leave that to you to see. But I have to say of all the espisodes this is the most exciting one, the fightings are extrodinary, and some of the monsters are super ugly or cute in some way. It's fun to wacth.

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Tournament in Full Swing.......2007-05-08

In Yu Yu Hakusho: Third Strike, you will get 14 very interesting and action packed episodes of the show. Specifically, this volume contains episodes 29 to 42 so if you haven't seen the earlier episodes, you may become lost while reading the following review.

Yusuke Urameshi and his teammates Kurama, Hiei, Kuwabara, and a mysterious Masked Fighter have begun their first battle in the Dark Tournament against team Rokuyokai. The matches during this first round of the tournament are definitely action packed and very interesting. After Hiei defeats the assumed team leader Zeru, a mysterious man shows up appearing to be nothing more than a drunk, but looks can be decieving... It's Yusuke's first match of the tournament and it's a good one!

In the tournament's second round, our heros must face the Dr. Ichigaki Team without Hiei and Kurama who are mysteriously missing. It's a three on three battle royal, but why does Kuwabara feel bad for his opponents? After discovering the shocking truth, Kuwabara makes his stand with disastrous consequences. Finally, the Masked Fighter must step in to help in the brilliantly titled episode: Ambition Destroyed: A Trial by Light. The Dr. Ichigaki team fight is very emotional and the emotional side sometimes overpowers the action itself, which is fine in this fight. The Doctor himself is a true villain who you love to hate right up until Yusuke shows him the error of his ways.

The tired Urameshi team must immediately follow the previous battle by facing Team Masho in round three of the Dark Tournament. Hiei and the Masked Fighter are ruled unfit to fight and Kuwabara is in extreme pain - only Yusuke and Kurama are left to face the whole team! Team Masho is a group of Shinobi who each specialize in some art. The excitement doesn't stop as you see how Kurama and Yusuke overcome corrupt rulings by the tournament committee. Finally, the Team Masho leader Risho will stare down an unlikely opponent, and Team Urameshi's only hope to making it to the semifinals.

Overall, this DVD set is terrific. It centers on the Dark Tournament's first three rounds. You can watch the episodes in English or Japanese with subtitles and the extras are lacking, but to get 14 episodes for just over 30 dollars is indeed a great deal. Again, these episodes are extremely focused around action with some emotion, so if action isn't your thing, you may not enjoy this. Still, there are some funny moments and Yu Yu Hakusho is a terrific show. I recommend this DVD to all fans of anime.

Rap star Eminem makes a strong movie debut in 8 Mile, an urban drama that makes a fairly standard plot fly through its gritty attention to detail. Jimmy Smith (Eminem), nicknamed B Rabbit, can't pull himself together to take the next step with his career--or with his life. Angry about his alcoholic mother (Kim Basinger) and worried about his little sister, Rabbit lets out his feelings with twisting, clever raps admired by his friends, who keep pushing him to enter a weekly rap face-off. But Rabbit resists--until he meets a girl (Brittany Murphy) who might offer him support and a little hope that his life could get better. Under the smart and ambitious direction of Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, Wonder Boys) and ably supported by the excellent cast and the burnt-out environment of Detroit slums, Eminem reveals a surprising vulnerability that makes 8 Mile vivid and compelling. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Eminem pulls suprising peformace.......2007-05-09

B-rabbit is a struggling rapper desperate to make it to the big time. He takes a job at a steel plant so he can save up money for studio time. He fights off gang members and has the help of his friend future. It is loosely based on Eminem's life.

Eminem is quite the rap star today. He has sold millions of copies of cds
that are excellent hip hip masterpieces. He has taken the world by storm and shown that White people can rap. But, he stretches himself and his persona into this movie and the movie itself is surprisingly simple and easy to watch. It doesn't seem like a biography movie because the character's names aren't the same as the real person's name. Probably, Eminem didn't want the movie to be like a "Eminem can act" vehicle for him. He had already shown his rapping skills and enforced them through out the movie, but he does pull off a good performance as B-rabbit.

Curtis Hanson, who I find to be a okay director, seemingly could've been out of place in the hip hop culture but his direction works well with the atmosphere and location of the movie as the film as the film moves along at a fast pace set by his direction. He gets the performances out of the characters that were needed. He doesn't oversell the characters or oversap them so that they become these cheesy characters. You feel for the characters after you are done watching the movie. Curtis Hanson defines the character by the way he is portrayed on screen. We see his actions and we ulitametely root for him in the end as the credits roll and we hear lose yourself by Eminem. The movie then either sinks in or just leaves your mind and body as fast as it entered. it is one of those movies where you have to appreciate the hip hop culture and understand it to watch the movie, or otherwise you would feel incredibly lost in the mist of the movie and you will leave scratching your head and wondering what you have just watched. A solid movie.

3 out of 5 stars he looked like a guy who could surely do with some sleep........2006-10-25

This movie is really not as bad as i percieved a typical rap hip hop stereo typical movie,i must admit that this movie had a reasonable and predictable story line it's like i heard it all before! but i must say that eminem can act and kim bassinger was really great in this movie, i dont know but to me all the white folks look like they had lots of sleepless nights, maybe it's just me? it kinda had white trash feel to it, the mood of the movie kinda had a hopeless i want to commit suicide aura, (trivial) but none the less it was entertaining i say it's definitely worth a watch cast you own opinions laterz folks.

5 out of 5 stars Eminem gives us an entertaining masterpiece!.......2006-09-24

There are many aspects to 8 Mile that I loved! There were no stupid plot twists. The relationships are believable! Eminem plays Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith who has a hidden talent in rap & his friends contuniously incourage him to pursue a rap career. It's hard for Jimmy at first cause he is white & it's hard for him to find someone to be nice to him in that business. It is a cruel world at times & 8 Mile captures that quite well! Brittany Murphy is quite sexy in this role & the best part, unlike Jessica Simpson, she can actually act & she makes her performance more believeable than it could be! Now, 8 Mile might not be everyone's cup of tea cause it is a drama, there is lots yelling & it is a very dark movie. But for me, that's what it makes interesting! I'm not a fan corny movies & this movie is far from that. Eminem is one fine actor & I question why he didn't do more movies because this is one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a while! Rappers in general, I find, tend to be better actors then pop stars/actresses just because the movies they do tend to be darker without the cheesy plot twists & 8 Mile is definitely worth your time!

    3 out of 5 stars trivial pursuit.......2006-09-06

go read my comments on "hustle & flow"; substitute name "eminem" for "terrance howard". tra-la-la-la-la ...

    4 out of 5 stars Eminem.......2006-08-28

A bit of a padded feel that was only natural given the simple story that had to be stretched to two hours. The part that felt most real to me came early. I attended a black university in a ghetto of Tampa, but then I bicycled home to the Busch Gardens neighborhood. Kinda like wading in the shallow end of the pool at will while Eminem was in the deep end. That's one thing I got from the movie.

"Sweet Home Alabama," as sent up by Eminem and Future, has to be one of the funniest and most clever things I've ever seen in a movie. I cracked up and annoyed the sleeping cat on my lap.

Chinese viewers in China might not realize Detroit's supposed to look ugly in this film. Casting Kim Basinger was a stroke of genius, since the audience's view of the actress is about as low as Eminem's opinion of his mother.

The later excitement felt very contrived, like maybe I was watching a movie. The inevitable battle at the end was a thing of beauty to rap fans everywhere, even this old redneck in China. Too bad it only lasted 5 minutes, but DVDs allow you to skip back as often as desired.

Oh, and just to beat you over the head with the obvious, Eminem got out of the ghetto with his words. No gats, no hos, no drugz, and he can't even play sports. Not bad, eh? I love this movie.

Casting Kim Basinger was a stroke of genius,
