5 out of 5 stars FUN> < FUN < FUN and insanity!!!!!!!.......2007-03-09

This is a great transfer of a great scienvce fiction/kung-fu action monster movie. IT is so filled with wall to wall action that it borders on insane. I remember seeing TV spots for this film in 1977. It has these cool cyborg type villains who shoot mace-like projectiles on springs from their arms. Inframan himself bounces around and does flips and cartwheels as though HE is on springs. A horrible pan and scan VHS tape was released in the early eighties. This DVD has a fantastic picture and is in widescreen. So you wont miss any of the action. The english dubbed track is lifted from that earlier theatrical/video release. It was recorded by Titan sound Inc. and you can hear the voices of Ultraman regulars like Peter Fernandez of Speed Racer. This is really the original Chinese cut of the film, so the animated american opening credit sequence is not here to be seen. This is a shame since it is an improvement over the bland chinese titles. It should have been included as an extra. But, basically, this is the best way to see Inframan. I believe the "INFRA" in Inframan is short for "infra-red". There was a lot of research into this at the time. Inframan's costume is red. And there was an Ultraman spin-off character called Redman in the early seventies, so it all kinda ties in.

4 out of 5 stars Super Inframan: Monster smashin' fun beginning to end!.......2007-01-26

In the late sixties and early-to-mid seventies there was an explosion in Japan. That explosion, which rocked the Japanese culture and sent shockwaves clear into the present day, was the advent of Japanese superhero television programs, namely ULTRAMAN and its many popular imitators. In 1975 Hong Kong jumped on the rubber monster-man bandwagon with their colorful and zany, kung-fu choppin' monster fest: SUPER INFRAMAN. What exactly "INFRA" is suppose to mean or imply is unclear. The dictionary lists "infra" as meaning "under, below, beneath or (my favorite) inferior". So, in essence, what we have is "SUPER INFERIOR MAN". I guess that means he not just inferior ... he's SUPER inferior! Regardless of what it's creators had in mind, SUPER INFRAMAN is a fun 88 minutes of creative men-in-monster-suits action (and I do mean ACTION). You'll see karate choppin', super rocket kicking, growing to giant size, flying, laser shooting, head bashing, throwing, x-ray vision, super punching and flip-floppin' all over your TV screen. Although the film was released in '76 it looks fresh and new, the DVD widescreen transfer is absolutely clean and beautiful. The bottom line: If you're a fan of ULTRAMAN or any of its ilk, you're sure to enjoy INFRAMAN. Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars The best bad movie ever made.......2006-11-24

I am not normally compelled to write reviews for products or movies online, but when I found out this movie had been released on Region 1 DVD I absolutely HAD to buy it. This disk is so much better than I had imagined I thought I'd spread the word. I never thought in my wildest dreams that a beautiful widescreen print of this 1975 Chinese film with the original bizarre Peter Fernandez-produced English dub would ever hit North America. Thankfully I have finally been proven wrong! Previously only available as a Region 3 disk and VCD, this movie singlehandedly caused me to buy a region-free DVD player. Heavily influenced by Japan's "Ultraman" and "Masked Rider" television series, this cult classic has everything you need: motorcycles, monsters, martial arts, a cyborg superhero and a frenetic pace. The movie is almost non-stop action and is suitable for just about all ages. One word of warning to parents--this disk contains literally dozens of trailers (and other extra goodies) for other Chinese genre movies. The trailer for one particular movie has English subtitles at the bottom of the screen and an on-screen character drops an "F-bomb". Otherwise, you can throw out your grainy, washed-out bootlegs and pick up the best bad movie ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Chinas answer to Ultraman.......2006-11-09

This is a must have for your DVD collection
or at leat rent it.

I saw this on Tv when I was a teen and loved it. Have not seen it since.
Very happy it has been released on DVD.

If you have not seen it you are in for a treat.
Its one of those not done the best movies but thats
one reason it is so good. Surprised it did not become a
cult classic.

This film came out about the sametime Ultraman started in Japan.
I read this was Chinas answer to Japans hit Ultraman.

Apparently it was not a hit in China since no other Inframan films were done that I know of.

Remember this was made during the period of the Chinese
hardline Communist goverment.

The Cd Rom question from a earlier review.

If you cd drive is a dvd is will have DVD printed on the front of the drive.

Put the disk in the drive. When the movie comes up see if the DVD menu will let you get to the Cd rom features. If not stop the movie and close the DVD player.

Click on my computer, then right click on the Cd drive picture there.
On the menu that comes up click on explore. This will take you to the contents of the disk. Look at the folder names you should be able to tell
which one has the Cd rom stuff in it. Click on that folder to open it.
Then click on the files you want to run.

If it has sub folders you can still tell which folder has what by the name.
Click on the folder you want to open then on the file to run it.

Click= double click

Note- Copy protection on the disk may not allow access to the contents of the disk thru My computer or to the folders on the disk if they come up.

and excellent disc from Image. The film is top notch for fun, and it's got some pretty cool extras as well. It's very nice to see a legit company coming out with REAL Shaw Brothers dvds that aren't bootlegs.

Sam Phillips's Sun Records will forever be best known as the label for which Elvis Presley made his timeless first recordings. But Sun earned its legendary status by also recording any number of other blues and rock & roll greats, including Howlin' Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. This 112-minute, 2001 documentary from PBS's American Masters series features plenty of reminiscences by Sun old-timers (including the ever-voluble Phillips, who was not, apparently, universally loved by his artists) and some vintage film footage. But the best moments come when more contemporary artists--ranging from Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and Mark Knopfler to Live, Third Eye Blind, Ben Folds, and even Kid Rock--do their versions of Sun classics like "Honey Don't" and "That's All Right Mama." Several of these performances can also be found on the excellent Good Rockin' Tonight CD; the documentary is good, but if you have to make a choice, go with the CD. --Sam Graham

Description

Historians may never agree about where and when rock 'n' roll was born, but they do agree that an entrepreneur in the world of music named Sam Phillips began a revolution and spawned a legacy when he created Sun Records. This Memphis-based success story defined some of the most appealing roots of American popular culture with such seminal artists as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and so many others, all reprised in this two-hour American Masters film with such performers as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and Live, many accompanied by Elvis' original sidemen, Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. Highlights include a moving rendition of "Lonely Weekends" with Jerry Lee Lewis and Matchbox Twenty, and an emotional reunion of old Mississippi Delta musicians. Songs: That's All Right (Paul McCartney), Honey Don't (Ben Folds Five), Rock n' Roll Ruby (Mark Knopfler), I Walk the Line (Live), My Bucket's Got a Hole in It (Robert Plant & Jimmy Page), Blue Suede Shoes (Johnny Hallyday), Who Will the Next Fool Be (Zucchero), Cry, Cry, Cry (Third Eye Blind), Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee (Malcolm Yelvington and Kid Rock), Lonely Weekend (Matchbox Twenty).

5 out of 5 stars Good Rockin Tonight.......2007-01-11

Excellent DVD with a collection of vintage performers
talking and perfoming the hits that made them famous.
Billy Lee Riley showed he was still annoyed with
Sam Phillips to this day for not pushing his record
"Red Hot". Although a lot of the
artists were grateful to Sam Philllips there was
an undertone of annoyance at him for concentrating
on Elvis too much and letting a lot of their work slide.
A few really raw moments emerge so that this is
just not a nother greatest hits type of deal.
Jerry Lee Lewis does a few numbers showing
that he can literally play anything. His section
is a revelation in itself. One of the true greats
within this compilation. Sam Phillips is still a
proslytizer for the music he helped created but a
bit of a blowhard as well. A worthwile look at the
era that influenced so much that cam aferward.
Carl Perkins also a standout performer demonstrates
his musical chops which looked like a magic trick.
Such a great musician. I highly reccomend this DVD

5 out of 5 stars A real hoot!.......2006-12-29

The DVD: $9.99. Shipping: $3.00 Seeing Sam Phillips: Priceless!

Viewers will have mixed feelings seeing contemporary rockers covering Sun Records classics but I think the effort helps bridge the generation gap. But watching Sam Phillips will appeal to everyone -- what a hoot! When he says that the Lord himself was unable to do what Sam Phillips was able to do -- conjoin black music with white music -- you won't be able to stop laughing. With him, not at him. He is as big a legend as the stars he discovered. Not necessarily a "must-have" DVD, but for those who like these kind of documentaries, I think you will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars The Sun King. .......2005-04-03

I have the Sun hits CDs so the music in this documentary was always recognizable to me, but if one isn't familiar with these songs then the movie is even better. There's also a substantial amount of information in the film that may not be known to fans. I've loved Sun music for many years but I did not know, until I saw it, that the label began as one that featured the blues. Later, when country was the speciality, the background of the artists matched its stereotype as one of the guys said "There wasn't a one of us who didn't pick cotton before playing music."

There's some great lines in this one like when Perkins says about Elvis, "That's the prettiest man I've ever seen." The documentary, with guest appearances from Mark Knopfler, Led Zeppelin, and Paul McCartney, lets you know just how important Sun Records was to the world's musicians. We see here as well that many modern "artists" can't hold up to the legends of Sun as when the band, Live, performs a cover of "I Walk the Line." You will have great difficulty refraining from laughing out loud. Some songs don't need to be redone and Cash had more gravitas at age 10 then most performers today.

Sam Phillips is interviewed extensively which is great because he's an important historical artifact...but he's also a little cracked. How old is Phillips anyway? He's got more dark hairs than a college freshman but had to be at least 70 when they filmed him. Regardless of his idiocyncries, it was worthwhile having him on the screen. In the end, Perkins was right, Sun was "feel good music" and you'll feel good after watching this one.

Love this show.A must have for anyone who loves music&History.
Watch this dvd and then go to Sun Studio to feel the energy in person.

5 out of 5 stars I love Good Rockin' Tonight DVD and you will too.......2005-03-07

As you may know, Sam Phillips died at the age of 80 in July 30,2005. This DVD shows how much significant Sam Phillips was for Rock and Roll and R&B music. Your going learn that so many famous people got their start in music because of Sam Phillips. This Documentary will make you feel like your in Memphis at the same time you're enjoying the sound of music of Sun Records. You'll see today's artist doing their version's of their favorite past time sun recording artist. You'll even get to see the living original artist along with Sam Phillips as they reunite in Sun studios. This DVD has a real good feeling and you you'll want to play it over and over again.

Description

Jekyll and Hyde get a sex change! When slimy stud Dr. Chris Leeder (Jack Buddliner) takes possession of Dr. Jekyll's ancient notebook, he quickly becomes obsessed with the murderous sex crimes of the original Mr. Hide. Ignoring the notebook's warning that the Jekyll and Hyde formula "makes people appear as they really are," the demented doc mixes the potion and promptly turns into..."Miss Hyde" (Jane Tsentas), a sexy blonde in a mini-skirt who just happens to be a homicidal nymphomaniac! After enjoying a lesbian romp with Leeder's secretary (legendary skinflick starlet Rene Bond), and the sadistic slaughter of a drunken sailor (ouch!), Miss Hide decides to pay a visit to Leeder's fiancee (Jennifer Brooks) and permanently cancel the wedding...Gender-bending adult horror, "The Adult Version of Jekyll & Hide" is another outrageous classic from the Mighty Monarch of Sexploitation, producer David F. Friedman.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars for lover's of rene.......2007-04-08

really only good if you are a rene bond completist, there is much of her here but not much else when she isn't

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical sexploitation film.......2007-01-10

Compared to other films of the sexploitation genre, the "Adult Version of Jekyll and Hide" is well done. I think the take on the Jekyll and Hyde theme is goofy and ridiculous, but it makes for a very entertaining movie. The acting, the sets, and the script are all decent. Aside from being a nudie film, this movie also doubles as a suspense/horror movie as there are some violent scenes which are quite graphic. Nothing to scare anybody, but definitely more than your typical sexploitation movie.

The film also features an entertaining commentary by the producer, David Friedman, as well as the theatrical trailer and some sexploitation ads. The film quality is crisp and clear. Sometimes I prefer watching these movies with a little more grain: it gives the movies a bit more bite and adds to the sleaziness of it all!

3 out of 5 stars THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE!.......2001-10-04

Yes! Before there was BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA! Before there was MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTIN! There was THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE! That's right, its HIDE not HYDE! Because in this ADULTS ONLY version of the famous story by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON (Author of TREASURE ISLAND and other great books!) the good doctor is interested in the murderous sex crimes of the ORIGINAL Mr. Hyde! When he recreates the experiments he transforms into--(wait for it!)--the blonde bombshell Miss Hyde! Not to worry, this alter ego also has an APPETITE for SEX and MURDER! This is a film that knows what the audiences wanted in 1972 and certainly tries to give it to them! And with this DVD you get the proverbial much, much more! AUDIO COMMENTARY from the producer! Plus neat stuff from the FRIEDMAN GALLERY OF EXPLOITATIVE ART! Oh, and the ORIGINAL TRAILER!

3 out of 5 stars Warped..of course!.......2001-02-25

Being a fan of all things "Dr.J/ Hyde" I sought out this curio for the sheer novelty of the thing. It's definitely not for everyone (buy YOU aren't everyone or else you wouldn't be reading this review!!) so the cult-film fanatic will enjoy. Basic story with the good doctor discovering Dr.Jekyll's old diary. That's basically the story with the doc transforming into a beatiful babe about mid-way through. Some masochistic violence (Hyde-style) ensues. Cool T&A throughout. The three rating is for good cult-film style fun, with 1 star for "Ms.Hide"?

3 out of 5 stars Cool.......2000-07-06

Not much for storyline here. It's a classic Jekyll and Hyde movie with probably more T&A then needed. But I mean, come on, you don't watch these movies for the great story, right>

It's like dreaming with your eyes open! The guys at the office keep sneaking over to the Dream Follies at the local burlesque theater and peeking in at all the sexy strippers when - Wait! Who's that? Why it's none other than Lenny Bruce, unbilled in his first screen appearance (a year before Dance Hall Racket), doing the kind of burly-q shtick he'd soon abandon as he developed into the most controversial and influential comedian of the 1950s. Aiding and abetting Lenny are his wacky real-life mother Sally Marr (Lenny throws spaghetti in her face); strip star Deenah Prince; Stacy Farrell as a striptease secretary; and director Phil Tucker, forever immortalized as the man who made Robot Monster! Wow. Plus: The Dream Theme continues with Miss Justa Dream, "Burlesque's New and Brightest Star," and her Dreamland Capers. Along for the bump and grind are Valetta ("The Toast of Two Continents"), Venus ("The Body"), and Satalyte (who makes them orbit in front of our eyes). There's also rodeo-queen Dot Hackley, crazy contortionist Jacqueline Hurley, and a guy who makes music from bottles of booze. Yow. If this is a dream, you won't want to wake up!

The only flaw with the release of Quantum Leap's original pilot (a.k.a. "Genesis") is that the end leaves you wanting another episode... at least. (The intelligent, funny, and often touching series aired five seasons between 1989 and 1993, and was later syndicated on the Sci-Fi Channel.) The pilot is a reminder of how entertaining television can be when the writing is smart and the right actors possess the charisma to carry a show from week to week. As Sam Beckett (get it?), a brilliant scientist who's caught in a time machine nightmare--he spent five seasons bouncing from body to body, righting many of history's mistakes and trying to get, er, back to the future--Scott Bakula blends just the right mixture of confusion, frustration, and heroic self-parody. Dean Stockwell, as Al, Sam's oversexed colleague who now appears as a hologram image and Sam's guiding spirit, is always fun to watch, especially when he lands such a juicy role as this. In this pilot, Sam first steps into the time machine in 1995 and suddenly awakes in 1956 as Tom Stratton, a married Air Force test pilot who's getting ready to break the Mach 3 barrier. As Sam tries to piece his memory back together, Al informs him that Tom originally perished during the experiment, and that to get back, he must make sure he breaks the barrier safely. The only catch is that Sam has never flown a plane before. Quantum Leap's climax is both surprising and moving--a testament, perhaps, to how the series managed to survive for so long without becoming stale. For those who've never seen the show, this is a perfect introduction. --Dave McCoy

      Description

See how it all began in this exciting, premiere episode that launched the "Quantum Leap" series as Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula), a brilliant scientist from the future, takes part in a mysterious experiment--an attempt to defy the very laws of time and space.

5 out of 5 stars Quantum Leap Seasons.......2005-12-29

I must say the pilot episode was a must see. I think it may be one of my favorites really, its one of the only times we get to see where Sam came from. What time and such, now I saw a remark on here about Seasons 4 & 5 I wanted to respond to this. As we know Season 4 is on order here at Amazon. Due out March 28th of next year. Season 5 I'd wonder if that season may come out this summer? Kinda wonderin on that. Any thoughts?

      5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-06-01

I loved Quantum Leap when it was airing. I am so glad that it is on DVD now. I did't buy this DVD, But I did buy season 1, 2, & 3. This episode is on Season 1. Its just as good as I remembered. Now I just want to know when Season 4 & 5 come out.

4 out of 5 stars Like Many Pilots, Slow if You Know the Series.......2005-05-31

Sam Beckett is having a slight memory problem. He can't remember who he is or what he does. He just knows that the body he's in isn't his own. Heck, he's supposed to be a test pilot who doesn't know the first thing about flying. And the year 1956 feels wrong as well.

To further prove he's going crazy, a man keeps appearing that only Sam can see. Al clams to be a friend and co-worker and has a crazy theory about time travel. In reality, it might just be crazy enough to be true. If it is, how can Sam get out of this body and back into his own?

I've caught a few episodes of this show in reruns over the years but never with any consistency. I was looking forward to seeing the pilot since I never had. Unfortunately, it falls into the camp of many television pilots. Most pilots are important for setting up the situation and relationships the main characters find themselves in, but are slow once you know the full story. The main plot of this episode is Sam trying to figure out what is happening to him. Since I already knew that, there were times I found my interest wandering.

Fan of Quantum Leap will be happy to know this episode is also included in the Complete First Season DVD set, so they don't need to purchase it separately to complete their collection.

If you're new to the show, this is the perfect place to start. It's a good first episode even if it doesn't hold up as well to repeat viewings.

      5 out of 5 stars Just a question.......2004-06-30

Did I catch a glimpse of a young Will Ferrell in the pilot episode? I checked out IMDB but it wasn't one of his credits. Have I lost my mind or has anyone else noticed?

      5 out of 5 stars Very Good - But buy season 1 - it's included.......2004-06-19

There is no need to buy this dvd. The pilot, genesis, is included in the Season One DVD which just came out. They don't write smart tv shows like Quantum Leap anymore. If they did, you'd probably see something like this on HBO. Each episode is more like a movie than a tv show.

This poorly made production features Clint Walker as Dan Baker, a homesteader in 1876 Utah who refuses to join a local vigilante organization, led by the town dry goods grocer (Alan Young), and the resultant effects his independent actions have upon his son Billy (Lee H. Montgomery). Ancillary plots involve Billy's nurturing of a wounded fledgling hawk, abandoned from the nest, and the boy's friendship with Mr. McGraw (Burl Ives), a recluse whose vocation is the preparation of damaged wildlife for their return to freedom. It is not possible to include a kind word about the direction, screenplay and editing, as all are at levels which might, at best, approach that of student-made cinema. The acting is wooden, due largely to the rambling script and weak direction, with Montgomery embarrassingly inept, and only Ives rises above his shrunken material, giving some meaning to his scenes. Although there is precious little to like about this film, the scenery is remarkably beautiful, as the production was located within two of Utah's National Forest regions.

When a twelve year old boy (Lee Montgomery) finds an injured hawk, he takes it to a recluse living in the hills, having heard the fellow was good with animals. The two become friends, together train the bird, but when it attacks a bully fighting our young hero, a group of local vigilantees decide to take it out on the old man, always considered him strange. Might the boy and his father rescue their elderly friend before the mob lynches him? A good, solid drama that well addresses issues which are sadly still with humanity today.

How can you go wrong with a movie featuring the great Harry Carey as a philosophical lawman named Wistful McClintock? Well sir (or ma'am), you can't, and this first production from John Wayne's personal unit at Republic is simply one of the loveliest Westerns anybody ever made. The producer-star plays gunslinger Quirt Evans who, wounded by his archrival Laredo Stevens (Bruce Cabot), is taken in and sheltered by a Quaker family--in particular, by the daughter of the household, a dark-eyed angel (Gail Russell) who could entice Satan himself to the path of virtue. Not that these good people get pushy about converting "Brother Evans." For his part, Marshal McClintock, who's amiably looked forward to hanging Quirt someday, keeps dropping by to see which happens first--Quirt's reformation, or Laredo's return to finish the job he started.

Entrusting the direction to screenwriter James Edward Grant, Wayne bolstered Grant's debut by tapping Yakima Canutt to handle the hard-riding second-unit stuff. The Duke also stole a few moves from a little project he'd been working on with Howard Hawks, Red River. Such larceny may have been superfluous. Grant wrote far and away the best script Wayne had ever had at Republic, creating a gallery of memorable characters (including comparative bystanders) and developing some very entertaining business for them--especially for such juicy character actors as Paul Hurst (the Quakers' mean-spirited neighbor), Olin Howlin (a braggadocious telegraph operator), and Hank Worden. The result was a minor classic deftly blending humor, romance, authentic sweetness, and just enough leathery menace to keep things on the generic up-and-up. This one's a real treat. --Richard T. Jameson

      Description

John Wayne and Gail Russell star in "Angel and the Badman," a classic American Western of good versus evil, played out before beautiful canvas of the Colorado sky. Against this backdrop, the redemption of an all-around bad guy, Quirt Evans (Wayne), is sought by an innocent Quaker girl (Russell) who nurses him back to health after his near-fatal shooting in a fight over a mining claim. A quintessential John Wayne Western that has lost none of its power.

I can't believe that there are many different studios producing DVDs for the same movie (B&W or color, I saw both - color from Turner cable on TV few years ago). This one (D3K) is the only one that I can find that has English subtitle. The only problem I have with this one is that subtitle will work if I start the movie from the beginning. Subtitle will not work if I returned to specific scene. I will have to fast forward from the beginning after activating the subtitle. To avoid that, I will have to make sure I have a free couple hours to watch the whole movie at one sitting. That's the only reason I deduct 1 star. I guess it's better than nothing. Otherwise, the movie itself is great and enjoyable to watch featuring John Wayne and Gail Russell. And the movie is black & white.

Orphans of the Storm is D.W. Griffith's last great success, an epic melodrama from 1922 about two orphaned girls (real-life sisters Lillian and Dorothy Gish) raised in the same house and tragically separated during the French Revolution's infamous reign of terror. While it's no Birth of a Nation or Intolerance, it still reveals Griffith's inimitable talent for spectacle and intimacy. Not surprisingly, it works best when focusing on the plight of the two sisters: Lillian is a peasant who cares for the blind Dorothy, a product of the deposed aristocracy. Orphans of the Storm is a film about intriguing pairings. Mingling with the upper class to help find Dorothy, Lillian falls in love with the handsome and compassionate Joseph Schildkraut (best known as Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank) and beguiles the influential Danton. Dorothy, meanwhile, is held captive by a family of gypsies, and is fought over by two brothers. Despite the lavish sets and Lillian's stirring performance, the love stories and political tumult don't quite mesh. But there are two magnificent moments emblematic of Griffith's dual talents: When Lillian recognizes Dorothy's plaintive voice outside her window and comes to her rescue, and the thrilling climax when Danton rescues Lillian from the guillotine. --Bill Desowitz

      Description

D.W. Griffith's last great success, "Orphans of the Storm" is a handsome, whirlwind of a film starring Lillian and Dorothy Gish as sisters during the French Revolution. "Orphans" is a wonderful showcase for all the techniques that Griffith had developed, mastered and patented since the beginning of his career.

5 out of 5 stars Sweeping and Romantic.......2007-04-30

"Her name is Louise. Save Her."

This is without a doubt one of film pioneer D.W. Griffith's most rich and beautiful silent films. It is truly grand, an epic which never lags, its stars and story holding the viewer's attention with both its beauty and drama.

Griffith took the 19th century play, "The Two Orphans," and made one of the finest films of the silent era. The story of excess and poverty which brought about the French Revolution is told through the moving story of a blind orphan girl and the "sister" who sacrifices all to care for her. It was sheer brilliance which made real sisters Lilian and Dorothy Gish the perfect choice for Louise and Henriette.

Lushly photographed, Griffith shows the ornate beauty of the aristocrats and how it contasted the tremendous poverty in the streets. Griffith's genius here, however, was that he showed it only as a backdrop to the deeply human story of Henriette (Lilian Gish) and her blind sister, Louise (Dorothy Gish), making for a fast moving and incredibly entertaining film, rather than some cerebral historical epic which looks great but can't hold your attention.

When the plague takes the lives of both their parents, Henriette vows to care for her blind sister Louise, abandoned on their doorstep as a baby. The two have grown up as sisters and it is that love which carries them through the storm which is about to rage in Paris. It is to Paris they travel in hopes of restoring Louise's sight. Henriette's beauty does not go unnoticed, however, and an aristocrat so unfeeling as to run over a poor young Parisian girl with his coach and show concern only for his horses has Henriette abducted, and the two siblings are separated.

There is one aristocrat with a heart, however, and young Chevalier (Joseph Schildkraut) falls deeply in love with her and offers her a bethrothel ring. Henriette loves the young man but has promised not to marry without her sister's approval. While Chevalier tries to find Louise, Henriette befriends the voice of the French common people, Danton (Monte Blue). She will hide him and find herself imprisoned, while Louise is at the mercy of street people. Louise is not without her protector either, however, even though it comes in the form of a cowardly street urchin named Pierre (Frank Puglia).

The shadow over Henriette's happiness deepens when the sisters are brought together yet torn apart once again by circumstance. Gish is freed during the revoulution but anarchy reigns, and she is sentenced to the guillotine with Chevalier, who has returned to Paris, facing death to find her. Only an impassioned plea from Danton, the voice of reason in the midst of chaos can save the two lovers, as Louise looks on. But a desperate ride to get to the guillotine may not come in time.

Both Lillian and Dorothy are wonderful here. Each have that dainty beauty which enabled them to play younger than they were. Those who doubt Lillian's physical appeal, however, will no longer do so after viewing this romantic historical epic. One scene in particular, as an umbrella clad Henriette braces the rain, evidence that a beautiful woman lurked just beneath her child-like beauty. She takes your breath away.

This is a dazzling spectacle, its mix of sentiment and heroics nearly unequaled in American cinema. A fantastic silent film which is as artistic as it is entertaining. A true American masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars A compelling historic drama .......2007-03-29

By 1921, "the Father of Film" D.W. Griffith was well on his way to setting the standard for Hollywood epics with all the main ingredients: emotional drama and tragedy, romance, political intrigues, moral injustices and the essential thrilling climax to keep you on the edge of your seat. In fact, Griffith had set the benchmark several years earlier with grand epics such as "Birth of a Nation" and "Intolerance", and like these, "Orphans of the Storm" is also a fast-paced drama packed with action and emotion, as well as conveying an important message, which Griffith had always done since his early short films from 1908 onwards. Like these fascinating short films, such as for Biograph in those early years which always carried some kind of social or moral message, the point Griffith wanted to make in "Orphans of the Storm" is of the destructive elements which lead to bad governments, anarchy and revolution, such as in France where this story takes place, but also the Russian Revolution of 1917, which apparently inspired Griffith to use this theme. He also made the point that we, living in peaceful countries, should be glad and grateful for our good governments. Soapbox speeches aside, Griffith was also a master storyteller and could balance all elements of an entertaining but also meaningful film, and "Orphans of the Storm" is a good example. From the very start, the audience is drawn into pity and empathy for the two orphan girls, one of whom becomes blind and is lovingly cared for by the other. Lillian and Dorothy Gish are perfectly cast in these roles, and once their path leads straight into the debauchery of French aristocrats, peasants and revolutionists, and they become separated and lost, the suspense continually escalates up to the grand climax. With so many events and scenes, the viewer has to stay reasonably alert to follow the story and become familiar with the many varied characters in this film, but the effort is rewarding. There is not a single dull moment in the entire two hours of "Orphans of the Storm", and while following the fast action, one cannot fail to notice that a lot of effort was put into sets and costumes to recreate Paris at the time of the French Revolution. Although this DVD is by the budget-priced label, Alpha Video, the picture quality is very good in this case, and only the accompanying music is at a lower standard than most other labels such as Kino Video and Image Entertainment. The score is orchestral classical music, and while it was not composed for this film, it is actually still quite suitable and fits the atmosphere of the period. For a budget-priced version of this Griffith epic, this DVD is not too bad at all.

4 out of 5 stars Great for a silent movie.......2005-07-15

I haven't seen a great many silent movies, but this one seems much better than average. The production values are high and Lillian Gish looks hot. I like her better than Mary Picford. This movie interested me because I'm a francophile. The sets of old Paris were pretty good. I couldn't tell for sure if they were real or fake.

5 out of 5 stars You'll shiver better without that shawl.......2004-05-09

ORPHANS OF THE STORM is a great movie, and this time I'm not going to deduct a point for print quality and its non-sequiter of a sound track.
Real sisters Lillian and Dorothy Gish star as half-sisters Henriette and Louise Girard. Louise (Dorothy) was found on the cold and snowy steps of the church Henriette's father had, before a change of heart, placed her. Their parents die, the girls grow into porcelain beauties and Louise loses her sight. Henriette vows to take care of Louise forever, and they travel to Paris in hopes of restoring Louise's sight.
En route a cruel aristocrat is inflamed with Henriette's "virginal beauty" and connives to kidnap her. Henriette is indeed kidnapped shortly after her arrival in Paris, and the helpless Louise is forced to fend for herself.
Half of the fun of ORPHANS OF THE STORM is watching the indignities DW Griffith subjects his two starlets to. Henriette is kidnapped by one of the slimier specimens of the over-fed and over-sexed aristocracy. Her desperate search for Louise is frustrated at every turn- when she finally spots Louise and attempts to reach her the police arrive and she is sent to a prison for fallen women. Oh, yeah, did I mention her delivery to "the foot of Death's gate?"
Louise has it no better. She is kidnapped by the monstrous Mother Frochard (Lucille La Verne). Mother Frochard, with her hair mole and moustache and missing teeth, may be the ugliest woman ever filmed. Mother F is a street beggar, and she plans to use the blind Louise as her main attraction. After she breaks Louise's spirit, that is. So, down into the rat-infested cellar with Louise and up comes the ladder. They're real rats down there. Griffith also throws a few cold days of beggary and an attempted rape in Louise's direction.
It's all great fun and the girls are indomitably strong and resourceful. The print quality is quite good in spots, simply awful in others. Most of the stock is sepia-toned, but some battle scenes seem to have been tinted red and there's a scene towards the end of the movie that seems to have been colorized. Because this isn't a restored print it's impossible to tell.
Having watched a handful of silent movies recently I'm beginning to wonder why they aren't rescored. Alpha Video puts a classical recording on the track of their releases and calls it good. It's not. These old films are works of art and national treasures, and they deserve better than this. Sound IS an important component to movies. Either restore the original music or have a contemporary composer write a brand new score. (Note: I watched the discount Alpha release of the film, and I didn't realize that Kino has a pricier print that includes the original music. I'm going out on a ledge here, but I'll bet the print quality is better, too. I'll be trading up to the Kino version in the near future.)

4 out of 5 stars Great historic period piece.......2004-02-06

This is one of those early films that kept me checking the date of production. This is impressive stuff coming so early in the history of American cinema. From the lush costumes and sets to the use of thousands of extras, this reminds us how ground-breaking some of Griffith's work truly was.

Sure, it's campy melodrama, the sets are stagey, and cinematography had not yet matured beyond wide-shot vs. close-up, but for its time, "Orphans of the Storm" is full of moving characterizations and real drama. Like Griffith's other great works, "Orphans" is over-long but it must have been an expectation in the day for a "serious" film.

The Gish sisters are great fun to watch, as are the young male stars, Schildkraut and Puglia. I LOVE Lucille La Verne's performance as the "scoundrel" Mother Frochard. You have to love the mustache!

Yes, watch this film for the impressive work by Griffith in this EARLY period piece, but it also serves as a time-capsule to a by-gone era in American cultural history. While not as obvious or heavy-handed as "Birth of a Nation," the political leanings that underscore "Orphans of the Storm" are not subtly hidden but are on full display.

Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan gives his self-mocking humor full flourish in City Hunter, adapted from a Japanese comic book. But that doesn't mean there isn't a solid dose of action--after a brilliantly cartoonish opening, the movie settles into a half-comedy, half-thriller variation on Die Hard, in which Eurotrash terrorists have hijacked a plush ocean cruise liner and super-detective Ryu Saeba (Chan) has to stop them, aided by his lovely, love-lorn assistant (Joey Wong, A Chinese Ghost Story, Green Snake) and a beautiful undercover secret agent (Chingmy Yau, Naked Killer). Though City Hunter is short on breathtaking stunts, there's plenty of well-choreographed hand-to-hand combat. Jackie Chan's lecherous, self-absorbed character (accompanied by a parade of girls into skimpy or skin-tight outfits) come across like a gleeful parody of James Bond (slightly marred by a bit of homophobia). All in all, a high energy romp. --Bret Fetzer

this flick is kinda cool... although i prefer the fighting sequences. i think that they tried to do this flic an family action flick. but anyways, what impresses me the most in this film is that use see how good people from the west is comparing to people from the east. take th fight scene jackie chan v gary daniels. u see that this is withoutv a doubt gary daniels best performance... jackie is funny as usual... if like jackie chan, or gary daniels thisis a must see movie

      2 out of 5 stars My Review.......2006-07-13

This movie was an ok movie to watch but I think this movie could be alot more better made. But I like Jackie chan's movie so i'm not going to complain that much about this movie.

      1 out of 5 stars pitiful.......2006-03-31

I've been reading the reviews... and noticing how everyone who gave it 'top marks' saying it was 'hylarious', 'the bets movie ever', and so on and so forth, have never seen the original anime, or even better, read the manga.
If they had I'm sure none of those people would give it more than it's due - 1 star (for J.C. fans, maybe 2).
This movie is a poor excuse for an adaptation. And a disgrace for the original City Hunter. Jackie Chan as Saeba Ryo?! Puh-lease!
The attempts at manga/anime humor fall on barren ground and turn the movie into an even more of a farce as it already is.
I wouldn't recomend this movie not even to my worst enemy and I agree with the reviewer who said 'when you die and go to Hell, Satan makes you watch this movie'. I can't imagine a torture greater than that. I'd take boiling oil any time!

2 out of 5 stars don't believe the people telling you to just try this out and you'll see, yeah fu^%&%^ right you f^%$^&$& pieces of ^$%&$.......2006-03-16

So , I had heard from a lot of people that this is a very fun movie.

Other than seeing some of the hottest chinese chicks I have ever seen, nothing too special about this flick. I guess it's based off a comic book, so at least it makes sense of why this is so stupid.

The parts that threy call jokes in this movie include things like women falling over because their boobs are just too big. Come on Jackie, do an r movie, get out of the way, and showcase these women that you work with.

The action is pretty substandard all-around. The end fight just looks like they are hitting weaopns as hard as they can against eachother, this waas ok back in the 60's, but I expect a little more out of jackie. I think that there was around 3-4 min of action that I enjoyed in this.

To be honest, the best part of this movie is when the 2 gay guys start singing on stage with a woman or two. That song was freaking hilarious, AND WOULD HAVE BEEN EVEN BETTER IF IT WAS EFFING TRANSLATED. I HAVE VHS TAPES FROM LIKE 82 THAT HAVE SUBS ON THE SONGS.

Also the streetfighter scene, don't believe the hype, it sucks. It is one of the few funny parts in the entire movie, but is only good when Chun Li shows up.

EXTRAS-interview with jakie and the idiot of this project, jing wong. Jackie has a very lively interview talking about how america didn't like him because he didn't get to do what he wants to do. Action 1st, storyline 2nd, acting # 27, sound effects #5, special effects #24. This is the first interview with Jackie that I can remember him getting really mad. I thought he was gonna start cussing out evry american, but by the end he is talking about rush hour and seems pretty happy.

      5 out of 5 stars just a fun movie.......2006-01-04

I wish people wouldn't bag out this movie on the basis of it not being a serious fighting movie... its not, its obviously not - its just a stupid movie to enjoy in a similarly stupid fashion!!!

The movie in general is light-hearted and silly, though granted they could have put a little more effort into the fights (Jacky doesn't use as many 'enviromental objects' as he usually does), and the music can be a bit irrelevant and occasionally annoying (note the fight between Jacky and Kim in the bedroom, where the music is clearly looped thrice).

Also the english dub is nothing short of DREADFUL, as a part-cantonese I can tell you the dub matches the original about HALF the time - it looks like they tried to sync lips in some scenes by changing the words (but apparently no-one told em it would make for some totally irrelevant speech). Thats not to mention the thick american accents totally disillusioning the viewer. Stick with the cantonese track, and if you don't know cantonese make do with the subtitles, they're way more accurate!

If I was a nitpicker pro movie reviewer I'd probably give this two or three, because there are plenty of areas that could be refined or improved. But remember: this is a 1992 film, rereleased in western society, so don't focus on the music or the effects (which aren't too bad for a 92, actually).

But I aint a nitpicker: I rate on how much I enjoyed a film. And I enjoyed this one! You don't need to know anything about the City Hunter anime to see this, just rent it out cheap and watch it!
