3 out of 5 stars Synopsis of a fun chase n' shooter (less fun on DVD though).......2005-01-21

This is one of those films where you know what you're gonna get by simply looking at the cover of the DVD or tape. Dolph Lundgren looking tan and buff, purportedly standing in front of an explosion out in the desert, with the big block letters of the title. Luckily for me, I enjoy a lot of these B-grade action movies. Army of One is actually better than most such efforts; sure, its predictable and has some goofy moments, but the cast is pretty decent and there is plenty of action. Anyone looking for some car chases, bad guys getting shot up, and explosions shouldn't be disappointed as the filmmakers do an outstanding job where it counts.

The movie starts with Dolph driving a big truck out on a California desert highway with his buddy along for the ride. Luckily, they don't run onto the set of any other B-action movie, this being the region where about a billion such films get made. Their truck gets pulled over by a cop and the men look nervous, as they are hauling something vaguely illegal. Dolph's buddy gets out to fulfill his role as the slain buddy who will drive our hero in his quest for revenge. Dolph also gets shot in the melee and is sent to prison for apparently killing the cop in their gun battle.

Some dirty cops try to kill Dolph while he's being transported to prison, but he gets away, albeit after getting shot again. He runs out through the desert, showing relatively little ill effect from the bullet wound in his abdomen. We can already tell that Dolph can take care of himself, he must be one of those ex-something or others that all action heroes are.

The next day, we meet lovely Kristian Alfonso as she argues with her boyfriend in a diner. She leaves in a huff and heads out to her 4-wheel drive pickup truck. Dolph shows up and forces her over to the passenger side and takes off like a banshee through desert trails; for the next few minutes, we get treated to what seems like a Toyota truck commercial as we see it twist and turn all over the place. It may have been a bit more prudent to slow it down a bit, as all the dust clouds the truck is kicking up would make this wanted man fairly easy to find. He isn't found, though, and winds up at his estranged dad's out-of-the-way place. Thankfully, this family stuff doesn't turn out to be a subplot, just 2 minutes of character development.

We spend some time seeing George Segal! as the lead detective out to get Dolph, now wanted for kidnapping as well as escaping prison; George should be out to get the costumer who told him to wear that silly hat. Geoffrey Lewis is also around as a level-headed sheriff. We learn that Kristian is really a hard-nosed cop who is expert in hand-to-hand combat; she must be another one of those ex-something or others.

The plot thickens a bit as we learn more about the people Dolph is out to get and Kristian becomes more sympathetic to his cause, after the predictable cute arguing between hero and tough chick. There's a little more running and chasing and arguing, and they stop one night at a motel, where we get the mandatory shower scene for Kristian, though don't get too excited as its obviously a body-double's bazongas we get to view.

Jumping later on, we get a big shoot-em-up in a warehouse between Dolph and some Oriental gang that did him wrong. We see about 15 or so of these guys enter, though it seems that Dolph wasted about 40 of `em. We see the usual action movie traits here, guns that seemingly never run out of bullets, dumb bad guys who jump out into the open, firing their weapons out into space, conveniently placed props and guns, and guys jumping or falling through lots of crap. Don't get me wrong, it's all still very cool!

Lots of exotic-looking (though clearly replica) cars get shot up too. I was actually pleased that they weren't shooting up true exotic cars, as I would go nuts thinking about what a waste it would be. For a B-movie, this was actually a pretty cool action scene, they really made an effort in this one.

Eventually we find out who the main bad guy of the movie is (not exactly a big surprise) and we see a cool car chase between a Ferrari replica and a Lamborghini replica; things get kinda wrapped up and sorted out; I guess it turns out that you go free the moment the cops find out you were innocent of the crimes you were convicted and imprisoned for, no court stuff required. Then again, this film does benefit from its brevity; they give us just enough information that we need, not too much fluff. "Army of One", though sometimes goofy, it at least knows what its audience wants, always a good thing.

Unfortunately, Artisan often has no idea what its audience wants, the DVD is mercilessly cut down to pan and scan and the sound and colors seem rather muted, giving this film (which had excellent photography and choreography) the look of a hack TV pilot. Hopefully, someone will bring out a newer widescreen, competent DVD of this fun actioner (though I doubt that someone will be Artisan)

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic high-velocity action thriller movie!.......2004-05-24

I like Army of One the best out of all of Dolph Lundgren's films, it's one of the best action thriller movies I've seen and it's all high caliber action right from the start to finish.
Wellman Santee's (Dolph Lundgren)partner is killed during a botched heist and Santee is convicted of a crime he didn't commit. He escapes from prison and takes a woman (Kristian Alfonso)hostage not knowing she is a police officer and takes off across the desert in a high-speed race for his life while trying to set a trap to get revenge against the corrupt detective who sent him to jail. I like the car chases even better than in Gone in 60 Seconds. Also starring in this movie is Ken Foree of the original Dawn of the Dead, I just knew this movie was going to be good when I found out that he was in it and if you like these action type of movies then I also highly recommend Hangfire, Terror Squad and True Blood all of which also star Ken Foree in them and all of them are absolutely brilliant some of the best movies I have ever seen!
I prefer the DVD format which has special features but unfortunately this particular version is not so good so I ordered the other DVD version as well!

4 out of 5 stars Is Kristian Alfonso in this film???.......2003-06-18

Does anyone know if Kristian Alfonso is in this film? If she is , is she good? Thanks! Bye!

1 out of 5 stars Wrecked movie!.......2003-01-04

Why oh why is this in pan and scan only. This is a 2.35:1 framed movie and the well balanced and well composed cinematography is completely ruined on this DVD. About half the movie is missing. I love Joshua Tree but I won't buy this DVD. Artisan must understand this simply won't do. Sadly, the only widescreen version out there is the Japanese Laserdisc. And that's LONG out of print.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic Pan and Scan version of ace movie........2002-12-04

I'll make it quick seeing as how what I have to say is already echoed in many other reviews for this DVD. Joshua Tree is one of the best action movies ever. And this DVD is NOT the way to watch it for several reasons.

Title-Army of one, which is not the title of this movie at all. Joshua Tree makes more sense and is not as crass as 'Army of One'.

Picture-The movie was filmed in Clairmont-Scope with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. This DVD presents the movie in pan and scan format. Not 'fullscreen', which implies the movie was shot the way it is presented here. It wasn't.

Sound-Absolutely terrible. Muffled, almost totally mono in nature and does Joel Goldsmith's awesome score no justice. The sound design of this film had the potential to be marvellous. But this DVD sounds like a temporary/work in progress, rough mix.

Extras-Only a trailer (which calls the movie by it's REAL name). I remember seeing a documentary on Sky Movies about the making of this film. There were extensive behind the scenes footage and interviews with Vic Armstong (Die Another Day, Gangs of New York). Artisan could have dug this up and along with OAR, a 5.1 soundtrack, some motion menus and possibly a commentary it would have made a very respectable release which I'm sure would have sold well.

Though I doubt this will ever happen. But I would not suggest buying this DVD. That would only prove to Artisan that pan and scan sells.

This early film of Jackie Chan's was meant to shepherd him into the '70s kung fu genre pantheon made internationally popular by Bruce Lee. Indirectly it did, but probably more out of positioning than performance. Chan was to assume Lee's position as kung fu superstar, made evident by his role in New Fist of Fury (1976), the somewhat clunky chop-socky sequel to The Chinese Connection (on which Chan had worked as a stunt man). Directed by Wei Lo, New Fist of Fury picks up with two siblings fleeing a Japanese-occupied Shanghai for Taiwan, where their grandfather runs a Kung Fu school. However, a Japanese martial arts teacher has plans to run all the schools under his own name, eventually killing the grandfather. Chan plays a young thief who, at first, wants nothing to do with fighting but then finds his calling as the new leader of rebels against the Japanese occupation. Chan of course is no Bruce Lee (although during one dramatic sequence, a still of Lee is cut into the frame to "remind" viewers of the filmmakers' intentions) but New Fist of Fury marks Chan's first entry as a leading actor in Hong Kong action films. --Shannon Gee

3 out of 5 stars Comeback movie (well first comeback) for Jackie.......2006-07-20

After co-starring in Hand of Death, Jackie Chan was forced into an early retirement because of the shift in consumer tastes in movies. The Hong Kong audience was dissatisfied with the action films after the death of Bruce Lee, leaving an ever-widening amount of unemployed stunt-men and bit-players. Since Jackie was one of these casualties he retired to Australia to be with his family. There he did construction in the day and worked in a Chinese restaurant at night. Then he received a telegram from Willie Chan wanting him to work in a new film called New Fist of Fury - a sequel to the beloved Bruce Lee film Fist of Fury. He told him that the movie would be for the newly formed Lo Wei Productions and that the film would be directed by Lo Wei himself. Jackie would receive 3000 Dollars (HK) per month for acting (he would later receive 9000 for being the stunt coordinator.) Little did anyone know that this unknown actor would become a big boon to the industry; though, this would not happen for a while and would not happen (directly) because of this film.

New Fist of Fury is typical of a Lo Wei film, it lacks cohesion and character with an overuse of plot elements. The film starts after the destruction of the Ching Wu School in Shanghai. The remnants of the school, led by the delightful Miss Lee (Nora Miao), are forced to flee to Taiwan to avoid persecution from the Japanese. She will stay with her grandfather Su Onli who is the head of a martial arts school. Unfortunately, the Japanese are ubiquitous in Taiwan too. When her group arrives, they are the target of a thief Helong (Jackie Chan) and his companion Old Chin (Hon Siu). Helong (Ah Lung in some translations) steals a wooden box containing the prize weapon of the late Brother Chen (Bruce Lee in the superior Fist of Fury) - nun-chucks.

Later, after Helong is found in a ditch beaten half-to-death by the students of Chin Ching Kai, he is found by Miss Lee's group and is nursed back to health (with the help of his prostitute mother's money, whom he does not know.) For all of this help and their forgiveness of him stealing their property, he refuses to learn Kung Fu so he can continuously be beaten up. Miss Lee has bigger problems than trying to get Helong to learn Kung Fu - the Japanese occupancy.

Akumora (played by the muscular Chan Sing) is the Japanese provincial leader who wants to combine the Chinese martial art schools under his Di Wah school. There is a great scene with him catching a knife in his teeth and then throwing it from his mouth killing an attacker. It is so hard to take this scene seriously, but it reminded me what Ed Wood might have done if he directed a Kung Fu film. Akumora is an interesting character that starts off semi-decent and then ends up completely anti-Chinese ("I kill Chinese, just like I kill dogs.") This is another annoyance with the film; it is completely ethnocentric with one-dimensional Japanese characters. This annoyance is especially evident when Akumora challenges a staged Kwong Gung, stating that the Japanese heroes are much better than Chinese's heroes. This infuriates Master Su during his 80th birthday celebration and leads to his death (when he jumps over a large crowd of people and apparently has a heart attack.) With the death of Master Su, Miss Lee decides to revive the Ching Wu School. This leads to an obvious clash with the Di Wah School.

One of the biggest problems with this film (yes even worse than the ever-yelling Jen Da So, the kiai spewing daughter of Akumora) is that Jackie is misused and miscast in this film. He constantly gets beat up by both Japanese and Chinese and yet refuses to learn Kung Fu. He does not get a decent fight scene until at least three-fourths of the film is over and yet he obtained his skills in just a few days (it is amazing what anti-Japanese sentiment can make you accomplish). When he does fight, his skills are quite evident. Jackie is very acrobatic and his fight scenes flow well though he is relegated to using actors who are weak in martial arts (with a few exceptions like Han Ying Chieh) and they slow down many of the action scenes.

I am a fan of Jackie Chan (and many of the HK films of this era), but this is not a film that rises above mediocrity. While it is not worse than many films during the 70's it has a few negative attributes that will doggedly follow it -- New Fist of Fury followed one of the most beloved of Bruce Lee films with a weak sequel and misused a future Hong Kong Superstar. Useless Tidbit: look for a small cameo role for Lo Wei where he portrays an inspector.

1 out of 5 stars bad.......2006-05-22

jackie chan misses (he rarly does bad im sad to say he did)
didnt like it at all. not jackie chan style at all. bad fight scenes

2 out of 5 stars Why it wasnt very good.......2005-12-13

As the reviewers below me have said, jackie is supposed to play bruce lee's brother in this movie. After Bruce Lee died director Lo Wei tried to turn Jackie into bruces replancement, hence why they made a sequel to the classic Fist of Fury (the chinese connection) I have read Jackies autobiography I AM JACKIE CHAN: MY LIFE IN ACTION and he stresses how much he hated being called "the next bruce lee". He didnt want to play a serious and fearless character like bruce lee's was. On the bright side this film allowed for him to become what he is today. In my opinion if you want to see a Bruce Lee style kung fu movie (aka a fearless hero who is an undefeated fighter), see the orignal Fist of Fury (called The Chinese Connection in america) and if you want to see a Jackie Chan kung fu/comedy movie (his characters are usually trouble makers that dont want to fight) i would recommend both the drunken master movies and snake in eagles shadow.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2004-12-30

"New Fist of Fury" was one of Jackie Chan's first movies, made before he discovered the comedy/kung fu combination that put him on the map. Being a sequel to Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury" (aka "The Chinese COnnection), it's Jackie's only full-blown 'Bruceploitation' movie. The story involves a young wise guy who decides to help Bruce Lee's Ching Wu school in the face of the evil Japanese army. This is without a doubt the worst Jackie Chan movie I've ever seen. The dull, slow-paced plot stretches for two hours, with nary a fight scene in the first half. In addition, it contains just about the worst rip-off ending in the history of cinema.
The DVD from Beverly Wilshire Filmworks is nothing short of abomindable. The transfer used appears to be from an eighth or ninth generation VHS tape, which is murky and washed out and nearly impossible to watch in the darker scenes. There are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to give the illusion of widescreen, but it's obvious the company just slapped bars on a pan and scan print. Worst of all, there is no menu and no chapter links. Easily the worst DVD I have ever seen.

4 out of 5 stars Good But Gets Old.......2002-07-09

This is a good DVD to get is you have a little bit of money and you want to watch music videos of your favorite punk bands. This DVD includes AFI, Flogging Molly, Refused Vandals, and other kick booty bands. I did give it 4 stars because like all other punk videos, it gets old after watching it 4 billion times. So borrow it from a friend instead of buying it, or buy it if you want to. It's not the best video, but it's good. So check it out if you like some of the bands that have music videos on this DVD. It's a deal for how much is costs, but $[money] is all it is really worth. But like I said, it is good till it lasts,. or just gets plain old.

1 Refused -The Shape Of Punk To Come /ok song
2 All Systems Go -All I Want /very good song
3 Vandals -My Girlfriend's Dead /I don't like the title
4 Ataris -San Dimas High School Football Rules /Too Poppy
5 Divit -Let Them Burn /Nice title song is ok
6 MXPX -Responsability /I really do not like MXPX (Christian)
7 Midtown -Just Rock & Roll /The original hit from Midtown
    8 Gob -I Hear You Calling /Boring
9 Travoltas -You Got What I Need /The band is ok, the song is ok
10 Sloppy Seconds -Fifteen Minutes Or It's Free /Really good song
    11 Pennywise -Alien /Good Song
12 Horace Pinker -South Stanley Place /Boring
13 AFI -Total Immortal /The best music video on the DVD
14 International Noise Conspiracy -Smash It Up /something from INC thats what it is
15 Snapcase -Caboose /another really good song
16 Movielife -Single White Female /Really good song
17 Flogging Molly -Likes Of You /Ok not the best
18 Dwarves -Over You /Really dumb song
19 Strike -Shots Heard Round The World /Ok, sort of boring
20 One Man Army -Another Night /Really fun and cool
    21 Descendents -I'm The One /Good Guitar
    22 Divit -A Reflection /Good ending video

The only reason why I don't rate this highly is because I don't like most of the bands in it. But you might:
The Ataris, AFI, The (new) Vandals, MXPX, Gob, Snapcase, Refused, Descendents do "I'm the One"... But anyway, I wanted to let you all know what is on this DVD. Stereo, color, running time is 80 minutes. This is volume 1. There are other volumes like this.

4 out of 5 stars Some glorious moments here...........2006-06-17

Although this isn't an ideal cast (especially for 1963), there is much to admire in this performance, and it's certainly something every Knappertsbusch admirer should see. The tempi are as always on the slow side, but the music making is glorious. This is the polar opposite of the Solti ring (of which I am an ardent admirer), so rather than the white heat of that performance you have a lovely, musical interpretation of the Siegmund-Sieglinde romance. This is about love, not passion. The singers do a fine job, with no missed notes or scary passages, and the orchestra has some marvelous moments, especially some incredible violin section work and a beautiful solo cello. The camera work is for the most part pretty good, although there are a few moments where the camera is not focused on the singer, or not focused on the correct singer. So if you love Kna and his wonderful way with Wagner, this is a must. It's also a rare chance to see Uhl and Watson live. Watson's portrayal of Sieglinde was refreshingly real, and has moments of tenderness that are too often forgotten in this opera. Uhl has some moments of "barking" but overall sounds fine - he's not my favorite tenor for this part, but he does a great job and is worth watching. There are moments when he goes into his deepest register that the voice takes on a wonderful quality. And Greindl is wonderfully menacing and nasty as Hunding.

For those of you who need "acting" don't watch this. It's not what you want if you're going to want a well acted Walkure. It's a concert performance, so the acting is very minimal allowing the singers to concentrate on vocal production. It's more for those of us who have seen the Ring many times, know the music well, and simply want to see a great conductor work his magic with a great orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice walkure act one.......2004-12-08

This is a marvelous performance. I mnot a singers expert but i enjoy the singing and also the images. Nice black and white with a good sight at the singers. Uhl and Watson are great and i like the tension which is under the surface. Not the kitsch style of a levine but sincere musicianship. Because of the images of kna a document of great importance. It is very nice to see him lifting up a bit to increase the intensity in the orchestra

The selling point to this is that it has like 7 of the biggest names in the biz. John Liu, angela Mao, Lo Lieh, Beardy, a swordsman who I should know the name of, and the baddie from jet li's iron rooster vs. centipede(this is only the second movie I have ever seen him in). So the story is ok, and other than the final fight and seeing john liu's leg go up high, this really sucked. It is like they didn't even try to make it look like any contact was made. The facial expressions sell what is going on, but I need SOME sort of realism in a serious movie like this.

"Live At The Troubadour" is a perfect model of how to make a live DVD. Good direction and editing through multiple cameras. Great audio mix, backing vocals are easily heard, along with all instruments. And the backstage footage is entertaining. Only complaint I have with this is that Jack, the lead singer of One Man Army, was possibly a bit too intoxicated with (insert your choice) for a recorded show. His solos are off at times, but his energy is 100%, so it doesn't take away from the performance all that much. Much of the setlist is taken from their 3rd album "Rumors & Headlines" but a few older tunes are thrown in. This will not dissapoint if you like the albums and have had the pleasure of seeing them live. And if you haven't yet gotten to one of their shows, this is a great introduction. One of the best punk bands of our time.

THIS IS YET ANOTHER DISMAL COLLECTION FROM VINTAGE MOVIE CLASSICS. THIS TIME, WE GET A DVD OF 3 MOVIES THAT STAR FRED WILLIAMSON. OUT OF THESE 3 FILMS, ONLY 1 OF THEM WAS ANY GOOD. HERE'S MY OPINIONS OF ALL THE MOVIES ON HERE:

''DEADLY IMPACT''-3 STARS-THE ONLY DECENT MOVIE ON THIS DVD. A COP [BO SVENSON, LOOKING LIKE A DIRTY HARRY WANNABE] CHASES TWO CRIMINALS WHO'VE STOLEN CASINO MONEY FROM A HACKER. EVEN THOUGH THE ACTING IS BAD, THE ACTION MAKES UP FOR IT. I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS IS ON THIS DVD, BEING THAT THIS IS NOT FRED WILLIAMSON'S MOVIE [HE PLAYS A SUPPORTING ROLE AND IS NOT VERY ACTIVE IN THIS FILM]. BUT, IT'S STILL A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN THEM OTHER 2 FILMS.

''DEATH JOURNEY''-1 STAR-THIS EXTREMELY LOW BUDGET ACTIONER HAS FRED WILLIAMSON [PLAYING SHAFT WANNABE JESSE CROWDER] BEING PAID TO TRANSPORT A MAN ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO TESTIFY AGAINST A CRIME BOSS. ONLY PROBLEM IS IS THAT JESSE MUST PREVENT THE MAN FROM BEING KILLED ALONG THE WAY. VERY PREDICTABLE PLOT, POOR ACTING, POORLY FILMED ACTION SCENES, POOR PRODUCTION VALUES, JUST ALL AROUND POOR FILM.

''MEAN JOHNNY BARROWS''-1 STAR-A SOLDIER [FRED WILLIAMSON] IS DISHONORABLY DISCHARGED FOR STRIKING AN OFFICER. WHEN HE RETURNS HOME, HE FINDS IT DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO GET A JOB AND BECOMES CAUGHT UP IN A MOB WAR. IT'S BORING AS HELL, IT'S TOO SLOW MOVING, THE ACTING IS HORRIBLE, AND THE WHOLE THING'S SO BAD, IT'S ALMOST FUNNY.

VINTAGE MOVIE CLASSICS NEEDS TO START PUTTING BETTER MOVIES ON THEIR DVDS. ALMOST ALL THE DVDS I BOUGHT FROM THEM ARE BAD.

    1 out of 5 stars garbage movie.......2001-07-22

Don't even bother with this film. another attempt to bring a kung fu style fighting together with non impressive non talented actors and martial artists. leave this one on the rack.

2 out of 5 stars I hope you have really low standards.......2000-06-11

this movie has a couple of mediocre fight scenes but sadly most of this movie has to do with (I am not makeing this up) the charicters political life as running for office. the fight scences have little to do with teh plot, not that there are very many. now there are a lot of B movies worse that cost a lot more but this just doesn't offer much. I reccomend Daneil bernhardt gary daniels and billy blanks. their movies usually have more action and quality
