A crisply executed B gangster film from Hong Kong, circa 1990. Stylistically it's a clone of the John Woo-Chow Yun-fat gangster films, but it also owes a lot to the popular Japanese comic book Crying Freeman, the story of a soulful hit man. Handsomely filmed on location in London, the film has a clear but enjoyably complex plot that implicates both the Japanese and the Chinese mobs in a plot to rub out an old guard crime boss, a traditionalist who opposes the lucrative drug trade. Sullen, sensual Simon Yam (Bullet in the Head), who looks half-dressed until he grows some photogenic chin stubble, is an orphan who was raised and trained to kill as the adopted son of the Old Boss. He plots revenge against his father's enemies, and becomes enmeshed in a series of double-crosses. Joey Wong (the sexy spook from A Chinese Ghost Story) is a photographer who accidentally records one of Yam's kills. The final battle sequences have a much smaller body count than their Woo counterparts, but they do add some hand-to-hand kung fu, and a little old-school swordplay, to the martial mix. This is a minor movie, but a pleasing one, with a dark romantic score and a savory sense of gangland ritual and melodrama. --David Chute

In this clever speculative tale, story collaborators Karl Alexander and Steve Hayes and screenwriter-director Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II and VI) send two famous historical figures ahead in time. In late 19th century England, writer H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) unwittingly includes Jack the Ripper (David Warner) in his social circle. When one of Wells's dinner parties is crashed by the police looking for the Ripper, Jack uses the author's time machine to escape. But there's one catch--after it has been used, the machine returns to Wells's time. Thus the literary genius bravely sets out to find his evil friend before he can wreak havoc on another time period, and soon arrives in modern-day San Francisco. What follows is a fascinating merger of a suspense thriller--as the charming and polite Wells tries to hunt down the shrewd, brutish Ripper and take him back to the past--and a love story, as Wells befriends and falls in love with a bank administrator (Mary Steenburgen) who acts as his guide through the future. Through its brilliant combination of creepy suspense and tender romance, Time After Time manages to become a classic in two genres at once--a rare cinematic achievement. --Bryan Reesman

Description

London 1893 is home to a killer with a macabre nickname... and also to a visionary genius who would write "The Time Machine." But what if H.G. Wells' invention wasn't fiction? And what if Jack the Ripper escaped capture fleeing his own time to take refuge in ours - with Wells himself in pursuit?

Of all the bad ideas from the seventies getting cheeky revivals, why doesn't someone bother to givve a neat story like this one a decent remake? Malcolm McDowell plays Jack the Ripper, who steals H.G. Wells' time machine in order to escape the police. The machine returns sans Jack, and Wells travels into the future to capture him. He also manages to meet a nice girl who may want to settle down with him. Instead he opts to count his Ripper reward money in the Time Machine, leaving it running with the garage door closed while listening to Morrissey's cover of "A Hard Day's Night." Thumbs up, to infinity!

This film was directed by Brian DePalma.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past.......2007-01-28

Wow! What a great film! I remembered seeing it when I was very young. The movie was way ahead of it's time (no pun intended). The story was very original and the soundtrack, composed by the legendary Miklos Rosza, gives the film a classic feel. Although it may seem cheap by today's special effects standards, this film really delivers! Very enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Traveling in Time.......2007-01-12

What a GREAT movie! A new twist on the old classic! I'll be watching this one again & again!!

5 out of 5 stars Time After Time.......2007-01-04

This hard to find DVD is a great thriller. It combines time travel with Jack the Ripper and has clever dialogue and plenty of action The cast is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars An Outrageously Implausible Tale Done To Perfection Marks "Time After Time" A Personal Favorite.......2006-12-07

It has been a while since I've reviewed something on my lifelong favorite's list. So I've chosen "Time After Time" because it isn't very well known by younger audiences nor is it necessarily considered a "classic."
However, I instantly fell in love with this movie over 25 years ago--and I still consider it a rip-roaring good time!

Starting out with the most bizarre plot ever, "Time After Time" will keep you enthralled. It is a glorious popcorn flick--fast, light, fun, and exciting in equal measures. Set in 1893, we meet H. G. Wells (Malcolm MacDowell) who is unknowingly friends with Jack The Ripper (David Warner). MacDowell has constructed a time machine which Warner misappropriates as he is fleeing the authorities. He travels to modern day San Francisco where he continues his murderous ways. MacDowell follows him, he must stop Jack The Ripper! He meets up with a local woman, Mary Steenburgen, who helps him adjusts and ultimately gets caught up in his unlikely story.

"Time After Time" succeeds in several different genres concurrently. This is a credible sci-fi pic, a sweet romance, a fish out of water comedy, as well as a decent serial killer thriller. I think that's what I love and respect about this film, it's out there. There is no way that this picture should work, it should be terrible. And yet, inexplicably, Nicholas Meyer has crafted an intricate and audacious work. Even if I didn't love this movie, I would respect its ambition and scope. But love it I do, this is one of the most wildly entertaining pictures you could hope to see. Some people might be tempted to dismiss this work as dated or even slight--and yes, you do have to accept that this is a product of the 70's. There are references to "free love" and other concepts of the era, but at the same time--the film is incredibly prescient about violence in the modern age. Every time Warner describes how he was meant to exist in this future, where killings and debauchery are commonplace, I understand a real truth in his sentiment.

The performances are cracking good. MacDowell is the unlikeliest hero and a refreshing romantic lead. Warner has NEVER NEVER been better. If you are even a passing fan of his, you must see this picture. And Mary Steenburgen is a delight--she doesn't do enough these days! Maybe this isn't highbrow entertainment, but it is dazzling fun. Recommended to all without even the slightest hesitation. KGHarris, 12/06.

5 out of 5 stars Fun 1930's "B" Mystery Starring Ginger.......2006-03-08

This fun to watch "B" mystery is great for a rainy night. Frances Hyland's screenplay based on a story by Kurt Kempler is typical of minor formula mysteries of the early 1930's but a young Ginger Rogers and Lyle Talbot give this Allied Pictures offering just enough zip and nostalgia to make it a nice one for "B" movie fans to own.

The story starts off with a bang as a man named Harker falls to his death from his own apartment complex. Reporter Lyle Talbot is on the scene trying to get a scoop on the hot news story but Ginger, cute as can be, may have the inside track. She has been posing as Harker's secretary for a rival paper in order to explore his ties to an underworld boss. The cops question everyone but the most fun is derived from Ginger and Talbot trying to get the scoop. There is some fun byplay between the two when they inevitably fall for each other.

A serpant card given the victim and a second murder add some spice to the mystery. Someone may have to save Ginger from the murderer near the end and who does so will come as a surprise. While certainly no mastepiece, as these little early "B" mysteries go, this one is entertaining for buffs. Ginger's fans will love this look at her just as she was on her way to a career capped by an Oscar for Kitty Foyle.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for fans of B-movie mysteries.......2005-12-02

Alpha Video currently offers two B-movie mysteries that both feature early starring roles for Ginger Rogers: THE THIRTEENTH GUEST (1932) and A SHRIEK IN THE NIGHT (1933). GUEST is marginally better than SHRIEK, although the print of GUEST used for Alpha's DVD transfer is definitely inferior (the picture quality has a dupey, washed-out, milky look to it).

By contrast, Alpha's copy of A SHRIEK IN THE NIGHT is pretty sharp (an original print, not a dupe) and the print is in very good shape. Fans of these kind of B-grade mysteries will enjoy watching Ginger Rogers and Lyle Talbot as rival reporters who try to solve a series of baffling murders. This is a typical 1930s "Poverty Row" production (i.e., a low-budget, independent studio release), so don't expect the kind of glossy production values you'd find in an MGM or Warner Brothers film. Nevertheless, sometimes these inexpensive little mysteries offer just as much entertainment value as their higher-bracketed counterparts. A SHRIEK IN THE NIGHT is proof of this, with Rogers, Talbot, and the rest of the cast giving lively performances that more than compensate for the budgetary limitations.

4 out of 5 stars Early Ginger Rogers in Mystery Spoof now on DVD!.......2004-02-08

Ginger Rogers is really cute in this Murder Mystery Spoof.

This Standard Format Black/White 67 minute movie is a good quality DVD transfer.

Summary: Live in Undercover newspaper reporter Pat Morgan (Ginger Rogers) is acting as a millionaire mob bosses secretary. She is trying to discover his involvement in the crime syndicate. "A Shriek in the Night" awakens the entire apartment building. The crime boss has fallen mysteriosly from his Penthouse balcony to his death. Other deaths soon follow and Pat is in the middle of it all holding key clues to who the murderer is.

This is a fun light mystery drama with a very cute Ginger Rogers playing the intelligent aggressive newswoman. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars John Carradine: Puppeteer, Painter, Master Of Mayhem.......2004-07-10

I did not know what to expect when I ordered this movie. All I knew was that it starred John Carradine and was made in 1944. It turns out that it is not a pirate movie; it is about Carradine as a tormented artist. Carradine, playing a nineteenth century French artist in Paris is the notorious 'Bluebeard' who kills models and dumps them into the Seine. Although I generally associate Carradine with grade Z horror movies from the sixties, he was at one time a very fine actor capable of a wide range of roles and emotions. Here he is excellent as the tormented painter and puppeteer who is haunted by an early encounter with a woman he helped, but ended up destroying him emotionally. Many of Carradine's talents are put to good use here, including the use of his singing voice. (Actually that wasn't a talent to write home about. The next time I can think of John singing is in the disastrous Coleman Francis cold war fiasco "Red Zone Cuba".)

Carradine is backed up by a talented cast including Jean Parker who plays the object of his desire, and who ultimately helps unravel his doings via a cravat she mended for him after he kills her sister. Also in fine form is Ludwig Stossel, who plays a nervous art dealer who seeks money from an unholy alliance with Bluebeard. Silent screen star Nils Asther plays a police detective very coolly, though when he speaks with his French accent he sometimes seems to be channeling Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau.

The film is well done, with excellent acting all around, although there are a few problems. The print is very dark and sometimes the outdoor action (generally at night) is hard to follow as the characters blend into the shadows more than was even intended. The music is public domain, and frequently does not fit the action onscreen, and the outdoor sets look like they were representations made for live theater on stage.

Carradine makes this picture what it is: he is excellent in the role of Bluebeard, and despite the occasionally exaggerated bug-eyed facial expressions (and the singing) this stands as one of the best performances in his very long career.

3 out of 5 stars Simply Structured Film Feigns South Seas Setting........2006-12-23

A rather jumbled work cobbled together from a variety of footage, this adventure tale is ostensibly set upon and near Tahiti, although California's Catalina Island fills in for the latter, with stock footage added from Polynesian sources that depict happy locals in their natural setting, framed against basaltic crags and bluffs, collecting breadfruit, splashing about in the Pacific Ocean, and that sort of thing. Some thick ear playing marks the film, while the plot is actually too complex to be properly handled during the brief duration of this piece that provides approximately 45 minutes of narrative, sans the Polynesian scenes of gamboling, one of which unaccountably is spliced within the middle of the story's climactic moments, apparently to stimulate audience alertness, focussing upon netting of fish, capturing a large sea turtle and other prizes, all with an exotic backdrop. A coffee plantation owner on Tahiti, John Carsons (John Beck), whose high grade crops are particularly valuable, rejects a forceful invitation to join a monopolistic coffee distribution combine, and soon after is murdered as price for his independence, by cartel henchmen while in his own plantation office. John's daughter Helen (Joan Barclay), not aware of her father's slaying, has departed upon a sea voyage to visit him, during which she is wooed by the vessel's radio operator Tom Willoughby (Eddie Nugent), and also by the son, Dick Bannister (Henry Brandon), of the murderous cartel chief, Dick having managed thanks to the screenplay to obtain a convenient method of joining the liner's passenger list, with an intention of persuading Helen, the unknowing heiress, to join up with the international coffee marketing syndicate. After the ship founders against a reef, Helen, along with her two admirers, and an officer, escape to safety in a lifeboat, touching down upon "Mystery Island", near Tahiti, upon which resides, in a seeming geographic vacuum, a clump of ne'er-do-wells, including Kelley (Charles King), a villainous smuggler who has made of the island his private domain. With no supply craft expected for two months, and with lecherous Kelley making portentous advances toward her, Helen gladly accepts Tom's support in addition to the tolerable but unreliable friendship proffered by a local native woman, Taino, performed with her native Mexican cadence by Carmen Laroux, a former mainstay supporting player in Three Stooges short films, cast here as mistress of Kelley of whom she approves in this manner: "..he only beats me once a week, and sometimes gives me presents". Barclay is a talented, undervalued actress, and since her dialogue is unsweetened by any form of originality, she ad libs some delightfully unexpected and witty lines while aboard ship, contributing additional "business" later, thereby crafting a winning performance. Cinematographer Glenn Kershner, whose dramatic closeups are a primary reason for the artistic success of the 1925 Ben Hur, must here largely compromise his aesthetic bent for his only assignment as director, due to an inordinately small budget, but does manage to construct a startling bit of expressionistic camerawork during the shipwreck scene, providing the best sequence of an awkwardly devised film.

First of all, this is a reasonably strong film. Not that you'd know it watching this DVD. If you are lucky enough to find the letterboxed/subtitled video, rent or buy it.

Simon Yam puts on a very strong performance as the head of a crime family whom is is forced by circumstance to take a hands on approach to eliminating the competition.

By no means a groundbreaker by way of plot, and definately not Yam's finest hour as an actor but it does have some finely choreographed violence, including a noteworthy kendo match in which Yam administers a savage and breathtaking beating to one of his lackeys during a sparring match.

A reasonably grimey and aggresive low budget gangster film in its original form, this DVD's production reduces it to a laughable mess at times.

5 out of 5 stars pretty damn good.......1999-12-25

This movie is great.Simon Yam delivers a great performance as an adopted chinese son of a japanese yakuza leader. The chinese triads and the japanese yakuza are battling for control in Britain's chinatown. When his father is killed,he goes on a killing spree, killing anyone who may have had anything to do with his father's death. One day when killing a triad leader,he is caught on camera by a girl(Joey Wong).Instead of killing her,he falls in love with her.At the end, Yam kills all the baddies, finding that the main villian is his trusted underboss. The movie has some great looking scenes, some capturing the very essence of the animated cartoon, Crying Freeman, which this film was based on.The gunplay in the film is very good,as well as the swordplay. The fights(courtesy of Phillip Kao)are first rate, very hard hitting, and well choreographed.

      1 out of 5 stars Totally unwatchable.......2007-06-15

Hear me people. I love movies, good movies, bad movies, awful movies, A, B, and Z movies. I've seen them all people, but Bluebeard falls into a category that defies description. Ever see a movie from the bottom of the barrel?? Well knock a hole in the bottom of the barrel, start digging, and you'll eventually find Bluebeard.

First of all the picture and sound quality is terrible. The scenes at night cannot be seen, the indoor scenes are so whitewashed, it hurts your eyes. The sound is bad too. But despite all this I could still watch it if it had a good story!!!

This is the most godwaful 'horror' movie I have ever seen. It took me three attempts to finish this movie. I fell asleep the first two attempts and finally finished it on the third. It is not because I wanted to finish it, it was because of the challenge to SEE if I could finish it. This movie spends more time wrapped around the investigation of a painting, clothing for puppets, and droll dialouge. The leading lady is a hottie, but believe me you will not care. This has got to be the most boring thing to watch next to live coverage of a session of English Parliment. Heed my warning people, you would rather eat a bucket of dirty toenail clippings than watch this.

3 out of 5 stars Carradine shines in this uneven B thriller.......2006-09-28

I saw this on a cheap DVD copy, and the film may have lost a bit in translation, but time has not been kind to the soundtrack, the dialogue muffled, and the background music overbearing. Even so, this is clearly a very uneven production saved maily by the two leads and the high notes of artistry within an overall muddy piece.
Carradine is fantastic. This is a great role for him, displaying diverse talents. He is unfortunately not directed with any subtlety, and it is clear that he is the villain from the begginning, so this becomes more a story of "will the villain be redeemed by love?" That makes this film more interesting than a standard thriller.
Jean Parker is really luminous and lovely, and is the only young female in the cast that captures the feeling of the time period. The actress playing her sister is arch and tart enough to be playing a film noir gun moll, and the other young actresses are just horrible, and horribly directed, and completely out of place in a period film... they must all have come from the local bar. They certainly add a laugh (even when they shouldn't).
The movie has elements that make it interesting and artistic, the focus on painting style, the accomplished and beautiful puppet show. It becomes fairly clear that this movie should have been called The Puppetmaster... that kind of "just missed the mark" moment mars many elements of this film. It starts with the title BLUEBEARD, which is bandied about, but never followed up on, and continues.
This was a "poverty row" film, and that does endear it to me... but being from 1944, this is not that early a film, and it is simply a grade B shocker - a precurser to Vincent Price's wonderful performances in many B thriller shockers, and they have been enjoied by millions. This may actually have been an attempt to make a period film in film noir style, if so, it was a mismarriage.
Still, I give it a 3 - slightly below average, because in the overview of film history, we have much higher budget films that are infintiely worse on all levels. A similar, earlier film, but much better on all levels, is John Barrymore's SVENGALI. If you liked this, you will LOVE that.

3 out of 5 stars To Love or to Kill, That Is the Question.......2006-09-03

Set against the backdrop of 19th Century France, BLUEBEARD is a black and white movie about a serial killer, named Gaston Morrell (John Carradine), who works as a puppeteer, but is also a talented and troubled artist who strangles his female models upon finishing a picture. Morrell has been attempting to live the simple life of a puppeteer, but his patron, Jean Lamarte (Ludwig Stossel) wants more money and coerces him into painting more pictures. Morrell has fallen in love with a beautiful woman named Lucille (Jean Parker) and Lamarte pursues Morrell to paint her. While Morrell fights with himself, the police race to save Lucille before Bluebeard kills again.

Illustrating the conflict that a disturbed psychopath feels in trying to live a normal life and giving into his murderous urges, BLUEBEARD is a decent movie made and distributed by the Poverty Row studio, Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC). John Carradine (yes the father of David, Keith, and Robert), who became best known for playing villains and heavies, is the most famous actor in the film and is said that his role as Bluebeard, aka Gaston Morrell was his favorite role of all time. Jean Arthur does a good job as the female lead in the film. Despite the fact that the film had hardly any budget and was one of many pictures churned out from Poverty Row, the movie is a decent flick that is still entertaining today. That's better than I can say for a lot of the million dollar garbage that Hollywood likes to churn out nowadays.

      3 out of 5 stars "I knew I couldn't undo the wrongs I'd done.".......2006-05-11

The film "Bluebeard" from cult director Edgar G. Ulmer is set in 19th Century France and begins with the police fishing yet another body out of the Seine. It seems that the residents of Paris live in fear of a serial killer who strangles his young female victims and then tosses them into the Seine. The beginning scenes of the film stress the atmosphere of fear that reigns in Paris--residents hurry home at night rather than face death at the hands of the killer.

Puppeteer Gaston Morrell (John Carradine) holds his puppet shows in the park, and the murders haven't been good for business. After meeting dressmaker Lucille (Jean Parker) and her friends, Morrell invites them to come and see his puppets. After the puppet show, it's obvious that Morrell is attracted to Lucille. While it is revealed that Morrell is the killer, the film stresses his motives and the detective work involved in solving the crimes. Lucille likes the softly spoken Morrell--who's also a portrait painter--so the plot becomes a tense race against time as Lucille becomes more involved with the deranged killer. There's also an interesting complication in the form of art dealer/landlord Jean Lamatre (Ludwig Stossel)--a man who shares some moral responsibility for Morrell's crimes.

Director Edgar G. Ulmer makes splendid use of light and shadows to highlight the sinister subject at hand. Some of the best scenes take place under the bridges around the Seine, and it's in these dark corners that Morrell feels most comfortable, using the sewer system as a short cut when hiding his crimes. One of the biggest complaints about these old film transfers to DVD is that the film is often either too dark or bleached out--obscuring action. But in this Alpha DVD is film is certainly watchable--however, the sound quality is poor and muffled--displacedhuman

4 out of 5 stars John Carradine in Ulmer's moody horror classic.......2006-05-07

One of the more ambitious productions from notorious 'Poverty Row' studio Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC), BLUEBEARD features the amazing John Carradine in the oft-fabled lead role.

Gaston (Carradine) is an artist/puppeteer in 19th century Paris who gets his thrills from murdering pretty young models. His newest model Lucille (Jean Parker) learns of Gaston's bizarre desires and decides to ensure his capture. Despite the 'Poverty Row' limitations of it's studio, BLUEBEARD is filled with exceptional photography and lavish production values, largely thanks to it's expert director Edgar G. Ulmer (who directed the 1934 masterpiece "The Black Cat" and whose later credits included "Strange Illusion" as well as "The Strange Woman" with Hedy Lamarr).

Jean Parker (best-remembered as Beth in the 1933 Katharine Hepburn/George Cukor "Little Women") plays Lucille and makes for a strong and vibrant heroine in the tradition of the great Ulmer leading ladies. John Carradine, who specialised in playing pychopaths and murderers, is completely mesmerising as Gaston.

The supporting cast includes Nils Asther, Ludwig Stossel, Teala Loring, Sonia Sorel, Henry Kolker and veteran character-actress Iris Adrian.
