RESPECT...In hip-hop it's the name of the game. Some rappers will do anything to get it, even starting a BEEF with another rapper or crew...and that can lead to raw, brutal conflict in the streets. In fact BEEF has become so common that it is quickly becoming the fifth element of Hip-hop, right beside MCs, DJs, graffiti and breakdancing.
"Beef 3" is about the high-profile Beefs in the hip-hop culture. Beefs are started when one rapper disses another for whatever reason, usually to get the upper hand with the fans or to show their machismo. This program features Beefs between 50 Cent and Game, Lil Flip and TI, Nelly and Chingy, Twista and Bone Thugz, Lil Scrappy and the Orlando Police and many more.

What's Beef?.......2006-06-17
Hot movie. Beefs I liked were "50 VS Bang 'Em Smurf & Domination" and "Game VS Yukmouth" 50 Loses on every beef he comes up in, with exception of Ja Fool and Bitch-Zino (see Beef 1)
Only beefs that I hated were "Chingy VS Nelly" and "Twista VS Bone Thugs" Don't get me wrong I LOVE Bone Thugs music 2 death and Twista is iight but their beef was just stupid and almost nothing so there wasn't a point in showing it. AS for Chingy and Nelly, that is probably the next "NSYNC VS Backstreet Boys" type beef hahaha.
Go pick this dvd up now if you didn't already!
Almost hated it.......2006-03-29
I guess what they say about sequels is true. Beef went downhill since the first one. This vol. as far as I'm concerned has nothin' to offer. I watched it 3x and tried to like it. High and drunk 1 out of 3 and still wanted to frisbee this s***. The 50 and Smurf beef was a waste of space. I hate the way it is so damn one sided. If they couldn't get 50 side of the story for this beef or the one with Game, then it should'nt have been included. You only got one side of the story. And just to prove how stupid them n****s is. How you gon pay to see 50 show start a fight and then get your a** arrested. That's why them n****s will stay in the ghetto and never make it cause they so damn stupid. Chingy vs. Nelly. A wack rapper dissin another wack rapper. Why was this even added? TI and Luda. Damn son, I don't know but if that was me I would have put out a big a** diss anyway. Lil Scrappy and the muthaf***in' COPS?! What the hell does that got to do with beef in the industry? What does that got to do with this DVD? Nothin', just a waste of time. TI and Lil flip was a good story. That had somethin' to do with hip hop. Flip said some s***, Ti got on stage and did his damn thing. The Yukmouth and Game was the best one. Them n****s got at each other and stayed on record. Game and 50 could have gotten way the f*** outta hand but it didn't. But once again the best they could do with 50 side of the story was a recording and a live tape. So what was the point of that? I heard 50 side of the story more from the NY daily news, and that's not a rap magazine, journal, or a free dvd comes with a free t-shirt type s***. This whole dvd is damn near pointless to include the features. And once again QD3 has yet to provide the story of beef between establish artist who have been around for more than 3-5 years. Such as MC Eiht vs. DJ Quik, Kim and Foxy, NAS and Cormega. Yo I just hope this is the last one. A complete disappointment.
Oooh, juicy.......2006-03-09
I always wondered why I never heard T.I.'s response to Ludacris' rhyme on Young Buck's album. Ludacris' response was dope though...especially the "t.i.p. of..." part. I'm scratching my head over the beef with Game and dude from "Five on It." If "Five on it" and him agreed that everything was cool, why did Game come at him like that? It sounded like they were telling TWO completely different stories...and nothing matched. The story about Bang 'em Up, Smurf and 50 Cent...wow. That was wild. Now I understand the part in 50 Cent's movie that Terrance Howard played. Sounds like Smurf was a little over the top, but still had his boy's back...so I have mixed feelings on that one. But as for the guy who said "his bodyguard TRIED to throw a chair"...yeah right, that guard THREW that chair HARD. I don't understand their purpose of coming to the concert to meanmug dude. If you're mad at him, you coming to his concert is only putting money in his pocket...how dumb is that?
What really interested me though was the beef between Royce Da 5'9 and Eminem. I bought Royce's album and I thought it was pretty average but after I heard the beef and his album played in the background, I realized I slept on it and plan to rebuy it again. The part about making sure the shooter can aim now makes sense to me, because when I saw it in Eight Mile I was lost. I'm assuming Bugs was the slow dude in Eminem's movie...anyway, I'm glad they could get past their differences.
As for T.I. and the Lucky Charms guy, you know, I thought Lucky Charms couldn't find his brain if his hand was right on his head, but from watching this interview, the dude got a lot more sense than I thought he did. I was shocked.
This whole tape was entertaining. I originally saw it on BET, but after Beef II and Beef III aired, I had to get 'em all. The first one is still my favorite because of Common, but they were all really good.
And as for Nelly, he was DEAD WRONG for that situation with Chingy. That rhyme was straight-up disrespectful. #1 You can't invent a slang term like "dirty" which was used WAY before him. Just because he didn't use it in a rhyme doesn't mean he didn't know the word. #2 Chingy came to him like a man and Nelly acted like a child. #3 Why is the tall dude even on that tape? Chingy wasn't even referencing him...and then the dude pronounced Kum-ba-ya wrong and I was threw! I laughed at him through the rest of the interview. Nelly's reaction made me not want to buy his next album...and judging from how wack "Sweat" and "Suit" was, I probably won't.

To the 2 reviewers who said 50 and game are still beefin but not on here, dude look at the f*ckin special features, click on "GAME DISSES 50 CENT AT SUMMER JAM" right there,so shut your potholes.
good.......2006-02-26
it is a good documentary but i think it should have 50 cent's side of the story on the beef with the game.

Outstanding Play.......2006-08-16
Never heard of the play until visiting [...]...but am truly happy i purchased....The story was great, the music was wonderful, and the actors played their part to a "T"...Would have rated 5stars if the picture was a little more clearer, but it doesn't matter you get past that with the singing....The woman who plays the young girl (LOL)...sings her heart out and like everyone says....Aunt Shirley.....she ain't no joke! Well worth my money...I'm even buying a copy for my mother.
Good play .......2006-07-17
This was my 1st time hearing of a play by BCB and it was not publicized as much, so I was hesitant to watch it. But much to my surprise, I was richly blessed. This play did great and had good life lessons in it, with Biblical applications to it. I loved all the characters, mainly Aunt Shirley(She aims at the hip, but lovingly and with the Word). I also loved J.T. the patriarch. Tony Grant also did a great job(wonderful voice, and debonaire and gets better each time he performs. All the singers have phenomenal voices. I'm looking for the Soundtrack, because the songs were great. I 'm looking forward to more of their work.
Great Play.......2006-02-13
I thought that this was a good play Aunt Shirley really made you laugh. Tony Grant is a really good actor in plays.

Trois starts out like some late-night soft porn on cable, but ends up as a Fatal Attraction-style thriller with some surprising plot twists and an African American cast. An attractive young couple, Jermaine and Jasmine (Gary Dourdan and Kenya Moore), move to Atlanta, where their relationship starts to hit some sexual doldrums. Jermaine thinks a ménage à trois with another woman would spice things up; Jasmine is resistant until a friend convinces her the idea is not so outrageous. A coworker suggests a sexy bisexual cocktail waitress named Jade (Gretchen Palmer), whom Jermaine offers to pay to be a third party in their bed. Jade accepts, but only because she has a young son to support. The night is all Jermaine wanted it to be--but afterwards he finds himself threatened by the unexpected bond that forms between the two women. Soon he and Jade find themselves locked in a fierce battle, which escalates to the point that Jermaine finds a rattlesnake in his car--only is it really Jade who's after his life? Trois isn't tremendously subtle, but it doesn't dumb down the complexities of sexual conflict between husband and wife. The cast is extremely good-looking and committed to the action. The sex manages to be explicit--the movie isn't coy about what's happening--but discreet at the same time. An unpredictable, independently made thriller. --Bret Fetzer

ENTERTAINING AFTER SEVERAL YEARS..........2007-02-27
Bought this one a while back and found that I still enjoyed watching it today.
A couple of my girlfriends where over this weekend and we decided to watch movies. Since I can watch what I want, when I want...I decided to let them select the movies. When they saw that I had all three "Trois" films, they opted to watch them back to back.
Once we had watched them all, we sat around discussing quality and content of each. We all agreed that the acting in all of them wasn't the best, but that we enjoyed the storylines, plots and suprises in each.
Having been the only one to have seen them prior, I have to admit that they held my attention this time around as well.
I recommend this (and the other "Trois" films) to other avid movies watchers.
Don't Waste Your Money".......2006-09-27
This was a awful movie. Bad acting. Very misleading. I saw The Escort and Pandora's Box, and that's why I purchased this one......Big mistake!!!
I wish I could rate it a zero.
A sexual thriller that fails on both parts of the equation.......2004-08-24
"Trois" aspires to the feel of soft-core porn, albeit without the sort of explicit nudity that devotes of the genre would hope to see. It also wants to be something of a thriller, which is another major regard in which this 2000 film fails, because I pretty much saw everything coming and it is hard to be shocked when you are not surprised. But you know how it is; you see an interesting trailer, check out a movie, and wish you had stopped with the trailer.
Jermaine Davis (Gary Dourdan) has a promising career as a lawyer and his wife Jasmine (Kenya Moore) has a great body. But is Jermaine happy? No he is not and because he is also stupid it is a dangerous combination. Jermaine dreams of a ménage-a-trois with his wife and another woman. He does not have a specific woman in mind, but one of his co-workers (Soloman K. Smith), knows of a woman who will fit the bill named Jade (Gretchen Palmer). Apparently she fits the bill because her name begins with a "J" as well. However, first Jermaine has to get Jasmine to agree. His argument to persuade his wife to let another woman into their bed? That there is nothing they should not be able to experience and that he is only trying to take their relationship to the next level.
Now, think about this particular line of argument without all the blood rushing to certain parts of the body and if you were Jasmine you would have to be very afraid. How many levels does her husband want to take her to and how long does it take you to come up with a long list of things that she would not want to experience? When Jasmine confides to a friend that this is what her husband wants to do, her friend admits that she did something similar once upon a time and now has to fight off her husband's desire to do something "worse." Not long afterwards, Jasmine agrees to do what Jermaine wants. There are many possible reasons why she agrees, but the most important one is clearly that the movie has to fulfill the promise of its title.
So it happens. "Trois" does not dwell on the big moment; you have a sense for what they are doing and it appears the experience is not solely for Jermaine's benefit, so the ambiguity of the moment is preserved. But then the three of them have to live with it, and that proves to be more difficult than any of them would have thought. Both Jermaine and Jasmine are worried that the other one is still seeing Jade, but that is before weird things start happening and we get to the "Fatal Attraction" part of the proceedings.
That development is going to be unexpected by many viewers and it certainly raises some interesting questions about the moral lesson to be drawn from the story. The filmmakers here are only working with a budget of $200,000 and while the production values reflect the skimpy budget they are trying for something more complicated in terms of the story. But the script, direction, and acting are all barely competent and despite the lurid subject matter the whole thing is just way too tame. You can get some good laughs out of this film, but you know that was not the intent of this film, which does try to deal with some serious subjects.
If the characters are not stereotypical, which is certainly a debatable point, the relationships certainly are. The most sympathetic character is Jade, but the fact that she demands $1000 from Jermaine so that she can pay for her lawyer in a custody fight over her son pretty much shows how twisted things get in this film. Jasmine does things she knows are wrong and then wonders why it is destroying her marriage while Jermaine is just too stupid to see that he is destroying his marriage before, during, or after it happens. In the end I just wish that in addition to this being a better movie that the moral of "Trois" was something more proscriptive.

This movie is worth watching.
It show how good independent
films can be. It has a good
plot and few flaws (Key's acting
and her not showing more skin).
Just don't expect motion picture
quality, big companys don't pay
for acurrat black caricatures.
oh boy.......2003-12-31
This has to be one of the worst films that I have ever seen. It was just really bad, bad acting, plot, lighting setting.. I don't want to get into further detail.

A different side of "La Pe".......2007-05-03
The movie has been rehashed plot wise here endlessly so I won't go there. The movie is a grab bag of good and bad parts, great scenes, mediocre scenes and flat out bad scenes; therefore it is disjointed. I think this is in part because of what it takes on. Heaven, Earth , Hell, the afterlife like never imagined, plots, sub plots, bizarre scenarios, crazy impossible situations are all battling for your attention like the protagonists battling for the soul of the boxer. Gael Bernal-Garcia is a funny but limited director of hell, he doesn't have enough of a role I believe, Victoria Abril is very good in her role as an angel on Earth and Penelope Cruz rocks as a fallen angel, a man returned as a woman bidding for the boxers soul. I love Penelope Cruz in most of her roles so I am impartial. She gives a very good gutsy, down to earth, comedic performance. Her scene where she dances to "Kung Fu Fighting" is hilarious and should be remembered alongside Travolta's "Stay'n Alive." The problem is the audience is different and many mainstream movie goers will never witness her performance. Speaking of audience, it is interesting to note that the movie did well in Spain and Europe. The audience has(everything) something to do with appreciation for cultural nuances in a film. I found the dark comedy to be pretty entertaining, hilarious at times, a little bit of a let down at other times but worhty of an hour and a half of my life. I would give it 3.5 stars. This movie is definitely not for everyone. Recommended for fans of Penelope Cruz and absurd comedies that reflect on our existence and the unknown; between laughs you might even ponder your own existence and the what if's surrounding your existence.
Charming, if a bit pretentious.......2007-03-12
The eternal struggle between Heaven and Hell seems to have come down to one soul: that of a worn-down boxer in Madrid (or at least, that's what Hell's number crunchers claim.) Each side has sent an agent to try to steer Manny Chavez (Demian Bichir) toward their side: Lola Nevado (Victoria Abril) for Heaven and Carmen Ramos (Penélope Cruz) for Hell.
Each agent is quite good in manipulating Manny and other circumstances surrounding him, but neither is quite powerful enough to overcome some of the other forces at work that threaten Manny, including a pair of crooked Madrid cops trying to shake him down for their influential boss.
The lines between good and evil begin to blur as the movie progresses. Lola, who is posing as Manny's wife, is certainly willing to use sex to try to steer Manny in the right direction. Carmen herself possesses considerable charms, but doesn't follow Lola's lead because... well, that would be telling. Near the end, it's hard to tell who works for whom when both are enmeshed in a plot to appease the cops.
Writer/director Augustin Diaz Yanes' script is quite amusing, and he uses language and film effects creatively in this movie. Most of the action takes place on Earth, in Spanish. Heaven is portrayed in black and white as a nightclub where the management and patrons speak French. Hell, meanwhile, is a darkly-tinted prison where each "circle" represents some unique form of punishment depending on the sin... and everyone speaks English.
Abril's performance and character seem quite vanilla at first, but she seems to gain momentum during the latter half of the movie. The sexually ambiguous Carmen is far from a typical Cruz character, but her portrayal is quite effective (watch for that little dance she does to "Kung-Fu Fighting" late on.) Gael Garcia Bernal definitely steals the show as Hell's eccentric CEO Jack Davenport, who is trying to fend off a conspiracy within Hell to replace him.
The movie, originally called "Sin noticias de Dios" (No News from God) is not particularly deep or memorable, but it is fairly entertaining if not taken too seriously.
Don't Tempt Me.......2007-03-12
I was not informed that the film is not in English and has no subtitles.
Weird yet great movie.......2007-01-27
In heaven, they speak French. On earth, they speak Spanish. In hell, they speak English. It's one of my favorite movies, not because Penelope Cruz is in it, but because its a movie that crosses time zones and dimensions but always comes up with lines that make you think about current events.
Great Stars, Good Idea, Mediocre Execution.......2006-12-14
A comedy featuring four sexy stars as representatives of Heaven (Fanny Ardant, Victoria Abril) and Hell (Gael Garcia Bernal, Penelope Cruz) battling over the soul of a Mexican boxer is promising, but this attempt at satire, full of symbolism (Hell is represented by English-speaking executives, for example), is clumsily executed, only rarely amusing, and the superb Fanny Ardant is not given anything to do. What a waste! You'll be better off watching any of the other movies each of these stars has done for more talented directors.

Martin Ritt (Hud) directed this wonderful 1972 drama about a family of African American sharecroppers in rural Louisiana during the Great Depression. When the father is sent to jail for stealing food to feed his family, the others regroup in order to survive. Cicely Tyson brings grace and strength to her role, and director Martin Ritt pushes the story well past nostalgia toward an understated but obvious look at burgeoning self-determination among blacks (even the roots of future militancy). If Ritt, a white director, can't get any closer to the characters' experience than he already does, he is still a fine storyteller and this is a terrific tale. --Tom Keogh

Sounder.......2007-05-13
This is a a wonderful movie about a man that's separated from his family down in the southern states. It's wonderfully acted, and the son is perfect for the part. I can watch this over, and over. My kids love it too. The one thing I don't like is how much your website sells it for. After all, what DVD is worth thirty dollars if it isn't a multiple disc set? I got this at Wal-Mart for seven dollars, so why pay thirty? Get real guys, and start shopping around. This isn't a rare DVD, you can find it anywhere. If a movie store can rent it, then they can order you one for way cheaper too.
Great classic.......2007-02-08
Father and son bonding with the family dog is spectacular. Good family movie that will not disapoint you. Hard times in Depression era Louisiana forces a father to go through great lengths to support his family. The end result was that you can't keep a man down for too long as long as he has a family behind him.
Wonderful Classic.......2007-01-19
A well done version of a time honored classic. My only issue with this movie is that it may prevent many children from reading a great book. (Yes, I am a teacher!) It's a great story about a family supporting one another, even during the hardest of times. Do your best to ignore bad reviews from people not even aware that "Sounder", was a book, first. It was also a Newberry winner, an award given for exceptional children's literature. I would highly recommend this video for family viewing as well as classroom use. I generally use the movie as an added resource when my class reads the book.
Yes, dvd quality could have been better, but I am not allowing that to alter my rating.
a Classic.......2006-10-12
a CLASSIC of American Cinema in the golden age of American Cinema. Beautiful perfomances and able to be watched and understood by the whole family - full of thoughts on family, morality, justice, endurance and love.
Negative Reviews for this film are misleading!.......2006-10-09
Just re-watching this film recorded on my DVR after many years - simply excellent portrayal - agree w/ those who rated this movie 4*-5*, well deserved. The lower ratings should be ignored - a number relate to the 'poor' DVD transfers, and although I agree that quality transfers are desirable these should not bear on the overall rating of the film's quality (perhaps several rating categories are needed?). Finally, the rating of 1* by Cynthia Ward should be not only ignored but abolished from the entire list of reviews - don't know if she had a 'personal' reason to rate this film undeservedly or just wants to promote her book? But just the simple comment of better acting & a better director reflects utter ignorance; Martin Ritt, the director of this film, also made the following movies - 'The Long, Hot Summer', 'Black Orchid', 'Hud', 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold', 'Hombre', 'The Great White Hope', 'Conrack', & 'Norma Rae' - just to mention some of his output. Bottom line - give this film a viewing & completely ignore Ward's rating - you'll be pleasantly pleased.

Description
NOTE: This DVD also includes "In the Footsteps of Martin Luther."
It is claimed that there have been more books written about Martin Luther than anyone else other than Jesus Christ. In those lists pundits compile about who were the most influential in shaping our modern world, the name Martin Luther inevitably shows up near the top, usually in the top ten. He is one of those few who can be proclaimed indisputably a "hinge of history."
Yet Luther never wanted to be a renowned world shaper. He was more concerned to save his own soul and entered a monastery to get away from the world and seek his own salvation. But in finding his salvation, he rediscovered foundations of Biblical Christianity that shook the late Medieval world and challenged its assumptions about religious authority, what God was like, how we are to approach him, and how God saves us.
T.N. Mohan, producer and director of the award-winning documentary on the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Hanged on a Twisted Cross, returns to Germany to tell the story of its most famous son, interpreted from an overtly Protestant perspective. In this two-hour special, we come to understand Luther, what motivated him, the turning points in his life, the issues he confronted, the opposition that sought to defeat him, and the profound changes brought about under his leadership and ministry.
PART 1: Luther's Life (70 minutes)
PART 2: Luther's Legacy (60 minutes)

Superbly produced, enthusiastically recommended.......2007-06-10
"Here I Stand: Martin Luther" is a superbly produced, enthusiastically recommended, 129-minute, full color documentary on the life, work, and historical impact of Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther. This informed and informative DVD production is divided into two part: Luther's Life (70 minutes) and Luther's Legacy (60 minutes). Martin Luther, who began his ecclesiastical career as a German cleric of the Roman Catholic Church, never wanted to be a famous religious leader and challenger to the dominance of the Catholic Church. Indeed, he had entered a monastery to get away from the world and seek his own private salvation. But in seeking that salvation he began to study the Bible and felt compelled to call what he perceived as the corruptions of the Church of Rome to account. He challenged the prevailing Medieval assumptions concerning religious authority, the nature of God, how Christians (including the clergy) should comport themselves, and how God brings salvation to men, women, and children. Although also available in a VHS format, the DVD format features a bonus: 'In the Footsteps of Martin Luther'.
At Least This Luther Movie's Not Deceptive..........2006-11-09
HERE I STAND is a Luther documentary, not to be confused with the drama LUTHER. Documentaries need not be boring, but this one is. Even so, there are worse things than boring--like deceptive, which this movie is not (in contrast to the revisionist LUTHER). HERE I STAND covers the length of Luther's life, including his peasant background, his struggles as a monk, his "born again" experience, his challenges to the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, and his Bible translation work (not the first to translate the Bible into German, but important for doing so from the original languages of Hebrew and Greek rather than from Latin).
The significant advantage of this DVD over the flashy and popular LUTHER is that it actually addresses Luther's theological significance, particularly his apprehension and dissemination of two biblical truths: (1) that salvation is by faith not good works (sola fide), and (2) that the ultimate spiritual authority is the Bible not the insitutional Church (sola scriptura). Also, the DVD shows Luther's emphasis on biblical authority not as original to him, but in the context of other reformers such as Wycliffe and Hus, which is helpful since there is a tendency of some today to overestimate Luther to the exclusion of others.
In addition to greater theological and contextual transparency, HERE I STAND is also more honest when it comes to portraying Luther's character, particularly his "rough, stormy, altogether warlike" temperament, in contrast to LUTHER, which presents a Luther who is bold, but only in a principled, noble way, which is far from the whole picture. This movie quotes Luther exhorting the princes to "knock down, strangle and stab" revolting peasants, and recognizes Luther's role in the 100,000 peasant deaths, some of which were tortured. Artwork is shown of Luther with two faces. HERE I STAND is a Luther movie for those wanting more context, less bias, more biographical detail, and the theological significance regarding Luther. However, the person wanting entertainment, an emotional experience, or inspiration to zealous action, would probably like LUTHER better, just know that its hero is whitewashed and largely a fiction.
One serious flaw of the documentary is that while not entirely silent about Luther's dark side (as is LUTHER the drama), it barely hints at Luther's disgusting, shocking vulgarity of speech (words that can't be written here) towards both the Papacy and the Jewish people, much less his incitements to persecution, even violence, against Jews. Both this antisemitism and his perpetuation of the Catholic idea of church-state union are part of the bad side of Luther's legacy that contributed first to religious wars, such as Thirty Years War, and centuries later to Church complicity with Nazis in Holocaust. This DVD does discuss Luther's legacy, but notes his contributions to the Reformation and not such negatives as the damage done to Jewish-Christian relations by Luther's association of the name of Christ with unbiblical hatred towards and persecution of Jews, and so the movie misses an opportunity to provide a needed historical corrective for today's Christians ignorant of the Church's antisemitic past. Consequently, the credibility of Christian witness is diminished in the sight of nonChristians (Jewish, Muslim, atheists, etc) who view us as untrustworthy hypocrites when we point out violence and antisemitism in Islamic or Catholic history. Whether our silence is due to shame, complicity, or more benignly, to ignorance, it needs to be publicly and widely addressed and unto now a balanced Luther movie, which could do just that, has yet to be made, though, as discussed, this DVD is more historically honest than LUTHER, which neither mentions Luther's worst nor his best (the gospel that saves!).

A beleaguered family feverishly tries to get out intact from New York's notorious Red Hook projects in this micro-budget debut film from writer-director-star Matty Rich. The director deserves attention for simply getting this unrelentingly bleak movie created and then released (as has been well documented, the then-19-year-old Rich had to gather the thinnest of shoestring budgets from friends and various grants); but the genuine passion behind this gangland drama can't disguise the fact that what's being presented here isn't particularly new or innovative. (A much more facile treatment of a similar subject can be found in Boaz Yakin's stunning Fresh.) Despite the impressively gritty locations, honestly pessimistic worldview, and George T. Odom's raw performance as a haplessly abusive patriarch, one can't quite shake the unfortunate feeling that this is a film more notable for its backstory than what actually made it up onto the screen. Rich would later go on to make the considerably more polished, Disney-funded coming-of-age story The Inkwell. --Andrew Wright
Description
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, this raw, uncompromising [and] auspicious feature debut (Screen International) from filmmaker Matty Rich is a remarkable tale about hope, passion and consequence told honestly, powerfully and 'straight from the heart (Reader)! Dennis is sick of his dead-end life in one of Brooklyn's toughest housing projects. Seizing an opportunity to get rich quick, he convinces his two best friends to help him rob the localdrug lord. Amazingly, the plan goes off without a hitch, leaving these urban Robin Hoods thinking they ve got it made until a life-altering event proves to Dennis that the only way out of this urban war zone is either in an honest day's work or a body bag!

EXTRAORDINARY LOW BUDGET ACCOMPLISHMENT!.......2006-01-02
Matty Rich and the entire cast do a fine job here. Way better than Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It--and with a lot more to say.
I have only one question: Why hasn't Matty Rich made more films?
RED HOOK all the way man!.......2005-07-28
yo yo, dis movie rocks big time. Dennis is the man!
"where did you get these beans?" great scene!
It doesn't get any more real than this! It shows the struggle that
so many families living in the projects go through. and how violence really doesn't solve your problems!
"yo, that is my GIRL" " I can get 30 guns, 10 for each of us!"
saab 9000 does 150 in first gear! wow!
don't miss this movie! it's one for the ages. Matty Rich rocks!
life in the projects ain't no game, kid.......2002-04-10
This is the movie that started it all for me. As a suburban white kid in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, I could still relate to these characters and this setting. From the opening moments of a busted up appartment (at the hands of 'Ray', the drunk-up pops) I was 'hooked on Redhook'. I have now seen it 13 times--more than any other movie. Matty Rich directed, wrote--done everything in this movie!
But you know? The show belongs to Dennis (Larry Gillard, Jr.) and Ray (George T. Odom--watch for him as the bartender in "The Hurricane"). When Ray's talkin' to the mirror... i'm feelin it.
I liked this movie so much, me and my boy was gonna do a remake of it, but it never happened... maybe one day...
Highlights of the movie include the scene where Dennis and Ray chat about life, forgotten dreams, and gettin OUT... also watch for the love scene with Sherley (which is sure to steam up your goggles) and the dance sequence where Dennis shows his moves with those crazy nut-caeshe friends of his.
You can't step to this movie. Now turn the lights down low, the volume full blast, and hit that owl like it was a party horn.
