Fans of author Louis Sachar's book Holes will be delighted with this scrupulously faithful adaptation. After being wrongly found guilty of stealing a pair of sneakers, Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility in the bed of a long-gone dry Texas lake. There--under the watchful eye of overseer Mr. Sir (a zesty Jon Voight), sneakily mean therapist Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson, O Brother Where Art Thou?), and the cool and cruel Warden (Sigourney Weaver)--Stanley and dozens of other delinquents are forced to dig an endless series of holes that the Warden hopes will lead her to a precious secret left behind by a long-dead female outlaw (Patricia Arquette). Sachar's book is beloved for its vivid characters and suspenseful plot; by sticking close to its source, Holes has become a dynamic, exciting, and surprisingly touching movie. --Bret Fetzer

Description

The award-winning bestseller comes to life in this phenomenally fun, adventure-filled movie starring Emmy Award-winner Shia LaBeouf (Outstanding Performer In A Children's Series, Disney Channel's EVEN STEVENS, 2000). Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats (LaBeouf) is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that's not green and doesn't have a lake. Once there, he's thrown headlong into the adventure of his life when he and his colorful campmates -- Squid, Armpit, Zigzag, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zero -- must dig a hole a day to keep the warden at bay. But why? Through it all, Stanley and company must forge fast friendships as they try to unearth the mystery of what's really going on in the middle of nowhere. Filled with humor and heartwarming messages of friendship and teamwork, HOLES is a treasure everyone will dig.

5 out of 5 stars Holes.......2007-06-12

A pair of shoes fall from the sky and hit Stanley Yelnats in the head. Turns out; they were extremely valuable, donated to a homeless children facility by a famous baseball player. The police show up and arrest him, turns out that the shoes were stolen. A judge gives him the choice of Camp Green Lake or jail. Stanley thought that Camp Green Lake sounded like fun. But when he got there, he had the worst time of his life. He finds out that there is no lake and there hasn't been rain for over 100 years. He makes friends along the way and figures out that the warden is up to no good. Stanley helps spoil her plot.
The director, Andrew Davis, did a great job following the book. This film was based on the book "Holes" by Louis Sacher. Louis Sacher also did the screenplay for the movie.
I thought the movie was awesome. It had a great plot. There were many twists and turns in the story that came together at the end. The use of flashbacks made it fun to watch!
I would recommend this movie to any family. Families will want to watch it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars great family movie.......2007-05-21

my daughter loves this movie she has watched it several times since I got it for her. I watched it with her as well. It is great everyone with kids should get this movie and watch it with their children.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't Quite Fit the Novel's Hole, But Still Good.......2007-04-29

If you dig out a chunk from gold bullion, all you will get is still gold. So that's what this movie is: a gold nugget--albeit necessarily smaller than the timeless novel of Louis Sachar, who wrote the screenplay, too.

Casting is well made, and Jon Voight reminded me why he's a great actor. Kid-actors were good and a few of them stood out as possible great actors of the near future.

Most exceptional performance comes from Patricia Arquette. Although her role was smaller in time than most others, her character had the most discernable character transformation in the movie; not just that she goes from being a teacher to bandit, but her facial expressions and demeanor are interesting to watch.

In the novel, Stanley goes through a physical metamorphosis along with the positive change in his self-esteem. But as they mention in the DVD extras, this was "too difficult" to ask of a teen-ager to do. I agree. Yet better acting/directing could have made the young Stanley character's emotional phase shift more remarkable to see. A novelist in this area has tremendous advantage over a movie because the reader can "experience" what a character's going through in more subtle ways than the motion pictures medium can allow, easily.

5 out of 5 stars Near Perfect Adaptation of Great Book.......2007-02-20

The movie version of HOLES is wonderful and very close to the popular and well written book for children/young adults. This is not surprising since Louis Sachar who wrote the novel also wrote the screenplay. The movie is well cast except Shea Labeuf does not look much like the Stanley described in the book as the novel's Stanley has a weight problem at the book's start while Labeuf is always about normal size. There are a couple of flashbacks in the book but they are handled without confusion to any viewer who is paying attention or is over age seven. And like in the book all the plot lines are tied up very neatly by the end.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-02

I'll never appreciate any other movie this much again. The characters and the plot were done like no other movie. Louis Sachar's also popular book was re-lived in a way that could never be redone. This is one movie that everyone should own. Defineitely the coolest way to spend two hours.

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's The Searchers, Howard Hawks's Red River, and Hawks's Rio Bravo. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), Rio Bravo is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally, singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. This most entertaining of movies also achieved some notoriety in the '90s when Quentin Tarantino (director of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown) revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. Oh, and if the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Rio Bravo 2 disc collection........2007-06-27

I enjoyed it very much the second disc was the best some interesting doco,s i hadent seen before yes i rate this dvd highly.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best..................2007-06-07

Recall seeing this first run when I was too cool to be a John Wayne fan. And this flick converted me, big time. Good story, interesting characters, great shoot out at the end, and John was never better, being John. And that's no put down. Not the critical or visual masterpiece that was the Searchers, but a more affiable outing for our hero. Action, humor and character development.

5 out of 5 stars Not if you don't mind your own business.......2007-06-06

I love this movie. It's always been my favorite western, and while cinefiles may put "The Searchers" or "Red River" above it, I think no other western is more enjoyable and thrilling to watch than this one. As an examination of what the western really means, why it's such a durable art form, it is perfect. Right vs. wrong, good men vs. bad men, courage vs. cowardice, it's all in there.

Even though I've owned the old cardboard-box DVD for some time now, I bought this new edition the day it came out. (For one thing, I HATE those stupid boxes Warner Brothers put out and I'm glad to see they're correcting their mistake) The new edition contains an excellent 30-minute documentary on the making of the film, including a great interview with Angie Dickinson, who I believe is the only person involved with the movie still alive. I wish she was on the commentary, but she has plenty to say here. Another, shorter documentary talk about Old Tucson, where the movie was filmed and where westerns continue to be filmed even today. Finally, an excellent older hour-long documentary on Howard Hawks himself, with liberal sprinklings of scenes of his movies and a great long interview with Hawks from the early 1970's. It's all worth the price of buying the new edition.

There is also a commentary track with film historian Richard Schickel and director John Carpenter, who says this is his favorite film by his favorite director. The commentary is somewhat less successful, but still very interesting. It appears to be two separate commentaries spliced together; they refer to the movie, but not to each other. I'd rather they had included both commentaries separately, although it is true that by about midway through the movie they both kind of run out of steam and for long stretches you forget you've selected the commentary track at all.

Nevertheless the main thing is the movie, and it is a great one. John Wayne was never better, or at least never more powerful and charismatic, than he was here. Dean Martin calls him "Papa" at one point, and you see the truth of this: John Wayne is the patriarch of the movie, guiding it and helping it along, centering it with the force of his gravity. He's befuddled by the attentions of young Angie Dickinson, to be sure, but you never doubt that he's in charge of this town and he knows what he's doing. Dean Martin is a revelation as Dude, displaying all the raw acting talent he always seemed to hold back with Jerry Lewis because he knew he was the straight man. His torture as he goes through withdrawals from alcohol feel absolutely real, and we root for him as he slowly pulls himself up from the depths to which he's sunk the last few years. It's ironic that his next project was "The Young Lions" with Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift; there are three great actors who all, in their own way, seemed to forgo on the promise of their talent and coast or dissipate themselves into oblivion. At least we have this performance, because Dean was a great, great actor. Walter Brennan is perfect as always, adding spice and flavor to every scene where he appears or is likely to appear. A greater character actor there never was. Rick Nelson is good, if a bit stiff, but he holds his own here and is enjoyable in the role. He and Dean sing a couple of great songs, too, because if you have two of the biggest singers in the world you put 'em to work. Finally, Angie Dickinson is wonderful as Feathers, she's a smart alec (alice?) and she's vulnerable all at the same time, as good as Bacall in her best days, and the difference in age between her and John Wayne is never jarring, not even for a second. You want them to get together, and since this is an old-school western you figure they probably will.

Great movie, great dialogue, great acting, great direction, great color cinematic scope, great everything. Great movie. Check it out. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Too bad.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD movie...........2007-05-26

Rio Bravo is one of John Wayne's more enjoyable movies and this movie is considered to be one of the greatest westerns ever made. Wayne is superbly supported by Dean Martin who also carried the movie as well as Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan and Angie Dickinson. Great cast, superb script and excellent direction make this movie a viewing a pleasure many times over. It has everything anyone want in a John Wayne movie. Gunfights, fist fights, slow developing story to developed all the main characters and even pacing with a song or two thrown in. So successful was this movie that it was remade two more times as El Dorado and Rio Lobo. Amazingly, all three movies were directed by Howard Hawks and starred John Wayne. Even more amazing is that all three movies proves to be just as good and entertaining as ever.

This two disc Special Edition of Rio Bravo is a definite upgrade in both quality of image as well as sound over the previous release. I found the running commentary by John Carpenter and Richard Schickel to be somewhat enjoyable but the extra features proves to be a disappointment. There are three special features on the second disc. Two of them, Howard Hawk's Rio Bravo and Old Tucson: Where Legends Walked proves to be quite interesting. However, I was pretty disappointed by the main feature of this second disc, Men Who Made Movies: Howard Hawks. This feature I have seen already on Bringing Up Baby two disc edition (superb Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant movie). I was very unhappy that a documentary already used in one DVD movie was reused for another. Warner Brothers made a cheap move here. (However, if you do not owned Bringing Up Baby, then you will get more out of the second disc then I did.)

I gave five stars for the movie, three stars for the special features, averaging out to four stars for this review. It should be noted that this two disc edition is exactly identical to the "ultimate edition" although that edition cost more and have a reproduction of Dell comic book based on the movie and promo booklet attached to it. (Much like the Ultimate Edition of the Searchers.)

4 out of 5 stars A Classic With Great Extras!.......2007-05-25

I have the earlier DVD, but bought this one for the wonderful extras. However, I like the print from the first DVD better. I think it is a matter of taste, but I think this print is much darker than the first DVD. Faces seem more red, less fleshtone. I would simply exchange the older disc for the newer one, except that the newer, darker movie disc also has a very nice Commentary by John Carpenter and Richard Schickel. On the other hand, the documentary about Howard Hawks is worth the price of the 2-disc DVD itself. Some great extras more than make up for a weaker copy of the film -- I guess I will keep both versions.

Wild Things is the kind of lurid, trashy thriller that you'll either dive into with unabashed pleasure or turn away from in prudish disgust; it's entirely your choice, but we suggest the former option since it's obviously much more fun. The plot's so convoluted it's hardly worth describing, except to say that it's set in humid Florida and involves a respected high school teacher (Matt Dillon--yes, Matt Dillon as a teacher!) who is faced with accusations of rape by a student (Denise Richards, from Starship Troopers) who had been giving him the kind of attention most people would consider improper for such a "nice" young lady. Another student (Neve Campbell) raises a similar charge against the teacher, and that's when a police officer (Kevin Bacon) begins to investigate the allegations. Just when you think the movie's gone overboard with its shameless sex and absurdly twisted plot, in drops Bill Murray as an unscrupulous lawyer (of course) to spice things up with insurance scams and welcomed comic relief. As directed by John McNaughton (who has a way of making just the right moves with this kind of film noir melodrama), Wild Things is a bona fide guilty pleasure--the kind of movie you may be ashamed to enjoy, but what the heck, you'll enjoy it anyway. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Wild thriller.......2007-03-15

This is a sleek, erotic and full of unexpected twists thriller. The cast is young, cool and made for these roles. But apert from the obvious sex appeal which help sell this film there is a very clever and fast plot that keeps the viewer interested and guessing. It is a sort of neo-film-noir directed to the young generation and the not so young generation. It all comes together at the end credits in a manner that Agatha Christie used in her own books.
Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy classic thriller!!!.......2007-01-27

Cool, classy, stylish...need i say more? Well, why not...

Rarely is a film worthy of 5 stars - this probably isn't but it certainly is quality.

Love this film. It's just great.

Great cast, great plot, great twist...good script

A film that has both Neve Campbell and Denise Richards in it can't be bad, especially when they have a very 'close' relationship in it. The ladies are ably assisted by Kevin Bacon and Matt Dillon who are both quality geezers.

Certainly unpredictable and well worth watching...but enough about the plot, the ladies are more important

4 out of 5 stars Wild Things.......2006-11-11

The credits include significant actors, so you know the movie has to be good, right? Well, most of the movie elements are fine, except the script which is very light-weight in dialogue. Perhaps this is due to the difficult plot - more time writing to make that work than giving the actors something to say.

Worth watching just to see Bill Murray play a sleeze lawyer and Denise Richards playing herself!

3 out of 5 stars Neve Campbell should act more she's terrific.......2006-08-28

Actually, the whole cast worked well together. Humid Florida wealthy trampy mom ignores daughter she in turn is manipulated by sleazy teacher, girl from the wrong side of the tracks is in on the con. This movie reminded me of "Palmetto" a little seen movie with Woody Harrilson and Elizabeth Shue. It wasen't a big hit but it was the same type of con game being played on some slippery characters. Enjoy!

Description

5 out of 5 stars A real western.......2007-06-04

This is John Wayne. You can spot the formula and most of his supporting actors for other John Wayne movies. O.K. you can also see that it is a Howard Hawks' movie.

Dean Martin plays himself as Dude. And Ricky Nelson as Colorado Ryan really fits in this movie.

You know the story. Good guys are holding baddy in the jail. All his compadres want him out. It is up to the town characters to prevent this from happening. How this is done or not done is the movie.

The only thing this movie needed to be perfect is black and white hats.

    5 out of 5 stars Rio Bravo.......2007-06-26

Hawks's colorful, exciting western boasts an archetypal, larger-than-life turn from the Duke, and perhaps Martin's finest acting job ever as Dude. Film neatly blends pathos, suspense, comedy, even songs to create top-notch entertainment. Look also for Ricky Nelson as Colorado (he and Dino get to croon together), and the leggy, alluring Angie Dickinson as Feathers, a young woman with her eye on Chance. Bravo indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Review of ACTUAL Release.......2007-06-23

I believe at this point in time I'm unique in that I seem to be the only reviewer who's going to attempt a comprehensive review of the Two-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition of Rio Bravo. Since I also own the original DVD release, I can compare the two prints (although to be honest, I loaned it to my Russian doctoral advisor a few years ago and he seems loath to part with it; however, the extras include unrestored scenes which can form the basis). We all KNOW that this is "the greatest Western that John Ford never made," otherwise, why would we be on this page? So rather than preach to the converted (which is basically a waste of time), this review will concentrate on the extras and the print itself.
To be honest, I prefer the older release for print quality. Given that this film was shot in Technicolor, I would assume that Warner would do the right thing and not tweak the original color values (I'm guessing that Rio Bravo wouldn't be a candidate for Warner/AOL's Edge Enhancement restoration because it was probably shot on one strip of film rather than three). But this print looks 'way too dark compared to the first release, with a rather significant loss of detail in the night and interior shots. To be honest, the detail is excellent in the brighter shots, but overall, I think the earlier release looks better and is immediately recognizable as Technicolor; this one almost looks like it's DeLuxe or Eastman. Okay...maybe it's not quite THAT bad, but I don't think it's an upgrade--everyone is orange, including the horses.
I don't know exactly what the stated audio restoration entailed, but it sounds great. There's an excellent commentary by Richard Schickel and John Carpenter (who are clearly having the time of their lives), an alternate French audio track, and subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and--of all things--Korean. There are also a number of trailers for Wayne's B westerns, culminating in one for Rio Bravo.
The extras on the second disk include three documentaries which are all deserving of the proverbial enthusiastic thumbs-up. The first is an installment of Schickel's series The Men Who Made the Movies which focuses on Howard Hawks; the second is titled Commemoration: Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo that features (among others) the ubiquitous Peter Bogdanovich (whom I find irritating almost beyond enduring) and Walter Hill and which, in spite of my aversion, I found enjoyable; everyone involved is a serious Rio Bravo fan and has something of interest to contribute. The final installment is called Old Tucson: Where the Legends Walked; this tells the story of what was to become the Old Tucson Studio and which is the location on which Rio Bravo was shot. This was all new to me and, like the other two documentaries, was lots of fun. For those interested, there are Portuguese and Korean subtitles.
We now come to the non-video extras. You may have read mention of "a comic book" that's included with this set. What ISN'T mentioned is that it's a miniature reprint of a 10¢ Dell comic book that was released for sale concurrent with the film's theatrical release (these weren't uncommon during that time period, now that I think of it). Also included is a miniature of what looks to be a promotional catalogue intended for theater owners, explaining how best to promote the film.
Finally, there's a nice set of miniature theater cards that somehow managed to get somewhat mangled in their sleeve. Since the trays that hold the disks were damaged when I received my set and are therefore being returned, I'm hoping for better things next time around. Everything is beautifully packaged as a series of folders within a heavy, vellum-textured slipcase.
I was lucky enough to purchase this with a coupon for about the same price as the list for the Two-Disc Special Edition, so I decided to go for it (I'm a sucker for gimmicks). I don't know if I'd advise purchasing it for list, as the extras, while nice, aren't essential. In fact, I don't even know that this new release is essential. If you already own the original release, there's really no reason to go for this one unless you want the documentaries and commentary. I knocked off a star because I'm really not crazy about the print, there's no hard-copy chapter index (a major pain in the posterior, in my book), the menus are cheesy, plus it's impossible to turn off the audio commentary unless the disk is ejected. Regardless of which release you purchase, Rio Bravo is not only a must-have for anyone who claims to be a Western fan, it belongs in the library of every serious film buff.

5 out of 5 stars Hawks at his (near) best!.......2007-06-05

It doesn't match up to the brilliant perfection of Hawks', "Red River", but it does have a great deal of gentle humor that the other lacks. This was always my third favorite Western after "Red River" and Ford's, "The Searchers". It has a sense of menace and a wonderful story, but it's so breezy and (unintentionally?) light-hearted (you can tell that everyone is having a blast making this film!), it's hard to take it seriously! The best thing to do is just sing along with Dean and Ricky (I always do!), and enjoy the ride!
    P.S. It's "Winchester 73'"!

4 out of 5 stars The Duke was always stylish..........2007-06-04

As my birthday is creeping up and this film was released in 59 and I shall turn 59 in June (07) I felt like splurging for the Two Disc Ultimate Rio Bravo. Happy I did. I love westerns but didn't know this film that well, thought I had seen it but realized when I started to unspool it that I had never seen it all the way through. It's a terrific film, I have other westerns favorites that I feel are superior; The Searchers, Winchester 73 (I think that's the caliber), One Eyed Jack etc., but this is very good and the packaging is terrrific. You even get a re print of The Dell comic of the film (reduced in size of course) also there is the advertising circular that Warners sent out to theatre owners. As for the film, it's The Duke at his Dukest and Dean Martin is pretty good, Ricky Nelson could never act but looks good on screen...Angie Dickenson steals the picture...in black tights even. Happy with my purchase and you will be too.

    5 out of 5 stars Great,but where,s YELLOWSTONE KELLY/.......2007-05-09

Although The Searchers is my no 1,there is no doubt about the class of Rio Bravo. If the Documentaries are even half as good as The Searchers 50th Anniversary Special Edition then, very well done Warners.
Kelly J Colvin reports that there are more Special Editions on the way.
    WHERE IS YELLOWSTONE KELLY,Widescreen please;;
Rio Bravo has been reviewed thousands of times,i think we all agree about its status as an All Time Classic.
    WHERE IS YELLOWSTONE KELLY?;;Not even on VHS,never mind DVD,AN ABSOLUTE SCANDAL,C,mon Warners,what are you playing at? A whole generation loved this classic,SO PLEASE DO SOMETHING;;

    Customer Reviews:

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Letter From Death Row.......2007-03-08

Oh My God! This movie was so incredible. Bret Michaels is not only a great singer but a great actor too. This definately could have been based on a true story and the twist at the end. Brilliant! I just can't say enough good things about it.

2 out of 5 stars Bad, but you might just find it so bad it is good.......2006-07-23

This movie is universally mocked. I own the soundtrack and it is pretty darn bad, but I had to see the movie for myself. Other universally accepted facts are that Bret Michaels is hot, Poison made some great music in the 1980's, and their music videos were darn good and the DVD collection of them sells well to their fan base even a full two decades later.

Bret should stick to his talents at over-the-top rock music and music videos. This movie is shot like a music video, circa 1988, with weird effects and fades that are inappropriate for a drama. As a rock star Bret is a good guy with a bad boy image, and he tries to pull that off with the main character in this movie as a petty criminal who is framed for murder. It's laughable how he tries to tip toe the good guy/criminal line, and he fails at being either. There's a massive conspiracy twist and Bret's character is not just fighting for his own life, but justice for the entire community at the hand of corrupt politicians.

The acting is bad, the plot is predictably bad, the soundtrack is rotten, and Bret's own hero worship for himself is shameless. You know what? For any Poison fan, this crosses the line from bad to so-bad-its-good. Don't waste your money on it, but rent it for a single viewing.

    3 out of 5 stars Great Potential......but.......2005-08-27

This was definitely a "B" movie. Micheals should have sold the screenplay to someone who knew how to make a movie. The plot was great, I thought it was suspenseful and well written. However most of the acting and production was deplorable. Question: was Michael's girlfriend a stripper before she hooked up with him? Because the only convincing part of her performance was while she was on stage. Overall this is worth watching, but I highly recommend you rent it or buy it used, it is not something you will want to watch over and over.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2005-08-24

I had heard about this movie a while back and then I found it on Amazon. This movie is very intense, It is hard for me to sit through a whole movie without getting up at least a couple of times. Not once did I leave my couch. It is worth seeing.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Storyline, Lackluster Acting.......2005-05-28

As a fan of Poison and Bret Michaels, I purchased a copy of this DVD, without knowing much about the movie. I found the movie to be slow starting, but quite suspenseful as the movie progressed. This movie is basically a one-man show. Bret Michaels wrote the movie script, co-directed, wrote and performed the music, produced, edited, and starred in this movie.

The movie is a suspense thriller about a convicted felon named Michael Raine, played by Bret Michaels. Raine is accused and convicted of killing his "exotic dancer" girlfriend. For his alleged actions, Raine is sentenced to death by electrocution. Despite the alleged murder being video taped, throughout his trial and while in prison, Raine asserts his innocence, contending the tape was nothing more than promiscuous role-play. A conspiracy begins to unravel as Raine finds out his girlfriend was actually "friendly" with some high ranking people, some of which would protect their names at all cost.

The storyline in this movie is decent, yet slightly predictable. For the people who like to try and guess how a suspense thriller will end, the opening line of the movie is vital. The acting in the movie is a little weak. Despite Martin Sheen and Charlie Sheen being listed on the front cover as actors, they probably only have 2 or 3 minutes of screen time between the two of them. The filmography in the movie does appear to be "cheap" at times (the murder scene reminded me of a horrifically amateur adult film, but that is just my opinion) as well as the opening credits seem to look unnatural like something some students would put together for a high school film class.

Putting the negative aspects aside, overall this was a great suspense thriller. This is a movie that I would recommend renting if possible or buying it used. I have not watched it twice, but I do not think it would be as good the second time. Keep in mind, the movie seems to be a cheap production, so don't expect extravagant special effects or high quality acting, but all in all it was an enjoyable movie to watch. I was impressed that a singer like Bret Michaels could cross over into film and put together a movie that was quite enjoyable.

    4 out of 5 stars Ned Blessing.......2005-03-28

NED BLESSING: RETURN TO PLUM CREEK is a made-for-tv movie from 1993 based upon, and featuring the cast of, the CBS series "Ned Blessing: The Story of My Life and Times." I don't remember the series at all, but now I'm kind of sorry I missed out on it. If the movie accurately represents the series, this one had a lot going for it.
Brad Johnson stars in the title role, the Boy Bandit of Texas who we first view as a one-armed old man in a jail cell, scratching out his memories on foolscap and chasing away a group of neighborhood boys who are playing on the gallows, his gallows, that shadow his barred windows. It's an intriguing opening.
Ned is returning to Plum Creek, Texas with a Mexican officer hard on his trail. Along with Ned is his friend Crencencio (Luis Avalos), a Sancho Panza type who is a healer (helpful, considering all the lead that flies in this 90-minute movie) and something of a mystic who speaks to the `grandfathers' that reside in a gourd he carries with him.
Ned returns to Plum Creek to find his father, who, coincidentally, is off looking for him. Before the first commercial break he's involved with a mule-shooting family, the Borgers, and the "off-breed" ex-slave couple they're trying to intimidate out of Texas. The Borgers, as the name hints at, control the town and have effectively cowed the inhabitants. Verlon Borger (Bill McKinney) is the patriarch, the widowed father of three sons. Verlon has a grisly sense of humor. The head of the last sheriff, a man who crossed Verlon, is floating in a pickle jar on a table in the saloon.
The town of Plum Creek, then, is poor, dirty, broken down and cowed by the Borgias - er, I mean Borgers. Ned arrives as a catalyst of change - and the only character who seems to have an endless cache of clean clothes - and the movie draws what must have been the core cast of the series to the ex-slaves' defense. Besides Ned and Crecencio that includes Sticks (Tim Scott), a rail-thin gray hair with a thick moustache who spends most of the movie overcoming his fears; Wren (Brenda Bakke), the tough/tender barmaid; Judge Longley (Richard Riehle), who apparently forsook justice for whiskey about the same time Borger first rode into town; and One Horse (Wes Studi), a Native American.
NED BLESSING is an old-fashioned, good vs. evil western with an impossibly accurate shooting title character and an impossibly vile antagonist in mean old Verlon Borger. Being a fan of this type of western, I enjoyed it quite a bit, with reservations. There's a scene with a lashed down hero and a rattlesnake that was too corny even for me. Further, there are some questions left unresolved. Maybe the series would have answered them, but it only lasted five episodes. What was One Horse carrying in that cotton sack that he protected so vigorously? How did Ned Blessing wind up in jail, and how did he lose his arm?
Recommended, especially if you're a fan of old-fashioned westerns.
