Even Seinfeld fans will probably shun this dreadful, nasty-hearted film by Seinfeld cocreator and writer Larry David. It's a tepid comedy about cousins--Richie (Craig Bierko) and Evan (Steven Weber)--who enter into a feud after one borrows two quarters from the other while on a vacation in Atlantic City, and then wins a $400,000 jackpot, which he refuses to share. His action fuels retaliation and one-upmanship that results in death, racism, and a general bad taste in the mouth (you'll have to see the film to figure that one out). Sour Grapes is a misanthropic movie about cheapness that's supposed to be clever in its play on the "Jewishness" that permeated Jerry Seinfeld's hit TV series. But it doesn't gel here, and the movie is full of more self-loathing than one might care to admit. It also introduces several subplots that go nowhere. All in all, its TV mentality doesn't translate to feature film. --Paula Nechak

Disappointing, Poor Casting.......2007-04-06
I think Larry David is a brilliant artist. I find his microscopic observation and comic analysis of the unspoken (and spoken) details of human interactions to be amazing in their precision. His bringing these details into the spotlight and examining the complications they create and the degree they affect our lives is a difficult artistic endeavor, but one Larry David excels in. This being said, "Sour Grapes" quickly disappoints: The actors are too weak for the script. They fall into the easy trap of immitating the characters in "Seinfeld" and then, by comparison, quickly fail. We know from George Costanza and the Larry David in "Curb" that the comic bases his neurotic, antisocial characters on himself, but that doesn't mean that this "persona" can only be portrayed in just one way. Watching this film felt like a second-rate ripoff of Seinfeld strictly because the actors didn't venture outside of a "familiar" script to create fresh, new characters we love to hate, or just love, but instead sabotaged their already doomed-to-fail- immitation strategy, by piling on the Jewish parodies, cliches, etc. What can I say, Mr. David had something to do with this, so who knows what happened there?
Lightweight entertainment.......2006-09-07
Larry David of SEINFELD fame made his directing and filmwriting debut with SOUR GRAPES, and you can sure tell it came from the mind that conjured that TV classic (and would later star in the unbelievably funny CUR B YOUR ENTHUSIASM). It takes a nasty "little" situation and makes it into a huge mess.
Two cousins/best friends (Steven Weber from "WINGS" and Craig Bierko) take their girlfriends for a weekend in Atlantic City. Bierko borrows a couple of quarters from Weber, puts them in his slot machine, and hits the jackpot. Weber believes Bierko should split the winnings, since no jackpot would have been won if he hadn't given the quarters. Bierko says, "Hey, it was my machine. Here's your 50 cents." Weber decides to get revenge. Bierko gets revenge for the revenge. And so on. And being a Larry David piece...you just know things won't turn out for the best.
My problem with the movie: It feels and looks just like a TV movie. It's 90 minutes long, but feels at least 20 minutes too long. It's just not enough fun for a whole movie. Weber and Bierko are fine...not great, but okay.
So it is sporadically entertaining, and if you like Seinfeld, you'll enjoy the similarities of plot structure and dialogue. Characters often engage in observations about everyday items, completely apropos of nothing. David himself makes a cameo appearance in an amusing tupee.
But it gets flat towards the end...there just isn't enough here. If you can rent the film, you'll find it's a pleasant diversion. But that's all. Thank goodness David went on to divert us with his brilliant HBO show. One episode of that has 10 times the laughs of SOUR GRAPES. For fans only.
Very funny.......2006-02-04
I enjoyed this off-beat comedy a lot, and am looking forward to seeing it again sometime soon. I guess the absurd, off-beat dialog and situations turned some people off. Too bad for them.

Maybe the movie would be better with actors better suited to the material, but I found the main characters off-puttingly petty, venal, loud, and obnoxious. Mind you, I love Curb Your Enthusiasm, which parades all those qualities and worse before the viewer, but as a high concept movie it does not work. The pacing is mediocre, the characters are boring, and the premise is inadequate for a feature length movie. I watched this with a friend who is also a fan of Larry David but neither of us could go the distance.
Sour Grapes.......2005-10-09
I really enjoyed this film. I am not a person who laughs easily, but it kept me amused all the way through, and the music was an added bonus.
It was also refreshing to see a film without the usual faces, i.e. Nicole Kidman, Jack Nicholson et al.

This is the only movie I know in which the villain's presence is indicated by--you guessed it--menacing accordion music.Armand Assante plays an evil Frenchman who lusts for women&jewels,and who's out to betray the boyish Benjamin Bratt.Armand Assante makes advances on Bratt's girlfriend,suggesting a menage a trois involving him and his wife.To the tune of menacing accordion music,of course (sorry,such eeevil accordion music isn't on Putumayo's hit compilation "French Cafe")
There's murder,intrigue,and lots of deep sea diving.And menacing accordion music.
Exciting movie with twists and turns galore.......2006-06-25
There must be something in the languid air of the Caribbean that just brings out the worst in people.
Benjamin Bratt stars as Arno, a down-on-his-luck knock-about who runs an errand for a rich woman who lives on a luxury yacht. He's set up, though, and only help from friends saves him from the crooked authorities.
His love interest is Conquina, played by the stunning Mili Avital. He finds a sunken boat he had a connection with, and, with Conquina, plans to salvage the vessel before it can be found by the authorities. They're ill-equipped, though, and help (in a way) comes from the shady Jean-Pierre (Armand Assante) with his partner Janine (Simone-Elise Girard).
The sultry sun, the warm ocean, sunken treasure (and a hungry shark) makes for some back-and-forth intrigue that keeps you guessing. There are several twists and turns, including the reappearance of characters we thought were gone.
The sexy undertones of the film, combined with the beautiful Caribbean sunsets, islands and lapping waves make this an above-average film.
Recommended, especially those susceptable to tales of treasure, the moody life before World War II, and scheming lovers, supposed lovers, and relationships of convenience.
Look for Jennifer Beals of "Flashdance" fame in a small role of Mrs. Gavotte
Three-and-one half to four stars.
Decent Film For Fans Of Paranoia.......2006-04-26
For a film few people probably have heard about, this was pretty good. It is a suspense tale of greed as Benjamin Bratt, Armand Assante and their respective girlfriend and wife go after jewels and gold from a sunken ship near the Bahamas.
Paranoia helps make this a guessing game on who and why things are happening, with a bunch of twists and turns popping up late in the story. It's a tame movie, language-wise, and features some nice photography.
It's not worth buying but you could do a whole lot worse renting something else.
Well-written, acted, and directed --- an exciting film!.......2005-09-13
This movie starring Benjamin Bratt has something for lovers of action, drama, and suspense movies. Based on a short story by Hemingway, the screenplay is written (updated and improved) by one of his main friends and biographers A.E. Hotchner. This is a rare case where the movie is actually much better than the literature it is based on. The basic plot hook is two couples working together to uncover the treasure on a recently sunken ship. Greed and mixed affinities between the couples lead to all kinds of plot twists that make the ending an unpredictable surprise. Of course getting there is all the fun. This film is little known about because it was an independent film released a few years back. Don't be put off though, this movie is definitely worth it! A true "diamond in the rough."

SO BAD IT'S GOOD.......2005-01-08
WINDFALL is one of those movies that is so ludicrously bad that you end up being entertained anyway. Casper van Dien (Starship Troopers, Cutaway, etc.) and Robert Englund (our beloved Freddy Krueger) star as two thieves who boldly rob a high profile casino on a South Carolina island. When they are caught after a ridiculously unbelievable chase scene, the casino owner (Ray Wise of Twin Peaks and Jeepers Creepers) does what any respectable businessman would do: he hires them as security guards! (Reasoning that since they were able to steal a million clams from him, they would be good guards). Security chief Gregg Henry (Body Double) of course is not too happy about this, as he has been stealing from Wise anyway, and plans on ripping off his entire fortune. His assistant, played with wide eyed stupidity by Jeff Kober (Falcon Crest, One Man's Justice), is also not too happy. Van Dien meanwhile starts courting Wise's assistant (Libby Hudson), and before you know it, someone's trying to silence Van Dien. Wise of course knows that Henry is robbing him, so his motive to hire Van Dien was more of a ploy to snatch Henry than his stated philanthropic motives. The big climax takes place during Hurricane Brenda. The special effects scenes are passable but one realizes we are watching the same two cars being blown around. No one in his movie can shoot the side of a barn, and the boat chase scene is preposterous.
Van Dien is horrible as always; poor Englund looks embarrassed, and Ray Wise looks like he'll never be forgiven for killing Laura Palmer. But still it's entertaining in a delirious way, so I guess they did something right???
