The opening and closing moments of Robert (Forrest Gump) Zemeckis's Contact astonish viewers with the sort of breathtaking conceptual imagery one hardly ever sees in movies these day--each is an expression of the heroine's lifelong quest (both spiritual and scientific) to explore the meaning of human existence through contact with extraterrestrial life. The movie begins by soaring far out into space, then returns dizzyingly to earth until all the stars in the heavens condense into the sparkle in one little girl's eye. It ends with that same girl as an adult (Jodie Foster)--her search having taken her to places beyond her imagination--turning her gaze inward and seeing the universe in a handful of sand. Contact traces the journey between those two visual epiphanies. Based on Carl Sagan's novel, Contact is exceptionally thoughtful and provocative for a big-budget Hollywood science fiction picture, with elements that recall everything from 2001 to The Right Stuff. Foster's solid performance (and some really incredible alien hardware) keep viewers interested, even when the story skips and meanders, or when the halo around the golden locks of rising-star-of-a-different-kind Matthew McConaughey (as the pure-Hollywood-hokum love interest) reaches Milky Way-level wattage. Ambitious, ambiguous, pretentious, unpredictable--Contact is all of these things and more. Much of it remains open to speculation and interpretation, but whatever conclusions one eventually draws, Contact deserves recognition as a rare piece of big-budget studio filmmaking on a personal scale. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Right Down My Alley!.......2007-06-21
The type of movie I love. It is scifi, rich in mystery! The beginning is very slow. When I watch it now I skip right to the beginning of the action. From there the movie flys. You are truly kept looking for the next clue, the next answer. You want to find out what this is all about. They could have done something different with the conclusion, but I liked the change in the main characters outlook.
This movie is assigned watching for college Ethics class........2007-06-04
This movie is rich in ethical points of view. It ranges from the insane who believe their harmful actions are saving humanity, to non-ethical behaviour by saying what ever it takes to succeed. the moral of the movie is amazingly simple yet illusive to even the wisest of Philosophers.
The special effects are fantastic, the casting is brilliant and the writing is incredibly profound. A definite 5 star movie.
terrible.......2007-05-15
it was long, unengaging and frankly, the end was not creative in the slightest. Don't know what else to tell you.
Great "What could be" Movie.......2007-05-12
Somewhat believable tale about potential life in the universe. Inspiring and fun to watch.
Contact.......2007-05-12
Contact is a movie about Astronomy and the search for signals in space from remote, intelligent life. Jodie Foster plays a gifted astronomer who struggles to keep her work and reputation alive in a very controversial field that very few people--including most other scientists--do not take seriously. Even a non-scientific audience cannot help becoming totally engulged in this story. The acting and direction are outstanding, and the special effects are stunning. The viewer is swept into a whirlwind of excitement and suspense as a world that does not yet exist for us becomes not only alive, but compellingly believable.

Yes, that is Bill Paxton as Ilan Mitchell-Smith's militaristic big brother. And that's Robert Downey Jr. as one of the in-crowd jerks who makes nerds Mitchell-Smith and Hall's lives miserable. Fortunately, this is a John Hughes comedy and our smart nerds create the perfect woman, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), using a computer and voodoo. Lisa is a willing sex toy, has magical powers, and just wants to help the boys get even and meet nice babes. She even cleans up. The fantasy ebullience of Hughes is given full rein here and that's good and bad (mostly good). It's all aimed at a certain kind of hormone-addled, 16-year-old sensibility; but who doesn't have a little bit of that in them? --Keith Simanton
Customer Reviews:
I wish I could love this like others do..........2007-06-12
Weird Science has a funny high-concept premise and an endearing cast, but even when I was a teen and the movie was brand new, I thought the humor was messy and heavy-handed. I never understood how so many of my contemporaries consider this a "classic", especially when stacked up against Revenge of the Nerds, Real Genius, Better Off Dead, or even Hughes' masterful 16 Candles or Ferris Bueller. Still, the movie is not without a certain odd charm and there are some great moments (mainly involving Bill Paxton); I find myself wishing Amazon would let me give it an extra half star!
2 kids made a woman.......2007-06-10
These kids are nerds too, they want to party a fall in love.
Weird Science.......2007-05-24
Great 80's Classic. I would put it in the top 10 80's definitively 80's movies list.
One of my all time favorites.......2007-05-18
TOTALLY worth owning. Kids loved this throwback just as much as they liked Shrek. My boy couldn't stop laughing when the last part came on when Chet was turned into a giant fly-eating turd.
a 1980's classic.......2007-05-13
It's a great movie! If you enjoy silly goofball comedies, I think this is the one for. Its extremly funny and you will see a young Anthony Michael Hall, the lovely Kelly Lebrock and a movie with some unforgettable scenes. Especially, the one where Gary(Anthony Michael Hall)and Wyatt(IIan Mitchell Smith) are in the bathroom disgusting their party, its hillarious. Enjoy Weird Science (high School Reunion Collection)

Whoopi Goldberg (The Color Purple) gives one of her earliest and finest film performances as Terry Doolittle, a computer programmer who unwittingly becomes embroiled in an international espionage scheme, forced to outmaneuver the CIA and KGB in this riotous 1986 Cold War comedy. Doolittle, the outspoken and irreverent employee of an international bank, is working overtime one evening when her terminal receives an encrypted message pleading for help from Jumpin' Jack Flash, code name for a British spy (Jonathan Pryce) trapped in Eastern Europe. At first reluctantly and then audaciously, Doolittle becomes privy to his predicament and essential to his escape while delivering a steady stream of ribald one-liners and witty slapstickwhether it's her Mick Jagger impersonation, police station meltdown, or infamous dress-caught-in-the-paper-shredder escapade at the British Consulate ball. A host of supporting talent includes Annie Potts, Jon Lovitz, Jim Belushi, the late Phil Hartman, and Stephen Collins (who shines as Marty, the mole), yet the film belongs to Whoopi. Though the plot is far-fetched and often flimsy, Penny Marshall (in her directorial debut) gives Goldberg enough latitude to showcase her immense talent in a role she obviously relishesand audiences will too. Rated R for extreme profanity and mature themes. --Lynn Gibson
Description
A computer operator (Goldberg) at a bank is plunged into an exciting world of international intrigue, danger and romance when her terminal gets an S.O.S. from "Jumpin' Jack Flash," a British spy stranded in Eastern Europe. She is soon matching wits with the deadliest members of the CIA to the KGB. Jon Lovitz and Jim Belushi co-star in this suspenseful, fast-paced and murderously funny comedy.
Customer Reviews:
Jumpin' Jack Flash.......2007-05-12
Jumpin' Jack Flash has to be Whoopi Goldberg's best movie. It has
both comedy & drama and keeps you interested till the end. Great
evenings entertainment.
Jumpin' Jack Flash.......2007-04-10
It's a good movie, lots of laughs. Whoopi Goldberg is at her finest.
Jumpin Jack Flash.......2007-04-08
Fun,Fun,Fun,every time I see it. If you haven't seen this you should. Great movie. Never get tired of seeing it. I think any age could watch this.
Movie's a stretch, but ya gotta love Whoopi.......2007-04-01
Whoopi Goldberg is one of those people who could make me laugh just reading the phone book. I always enjoy watching her no matter what she's up to.
So, I definitely got a kick out of Jumpin' Jack Flash, even though the storyline is pretty unbelievable and the romantic element kind of tacked on perfunctorily. There are a bunch of fun bits that keep the movie entertaining, but the story line is really just something to hang Whoopi's immense talent upon. Fun but flawed.
Classic Whoopi.......2007-01-10
Great movie....you fall in love with the character that Whoopi is trying to save. It's classic Whoopi humor.....I love the slippers.

This Jack Black vehicle seems, on the surface, like a perfect fit for the actor: an opportunity to showcase Black's unique style with the extreme facial gestures and exuberant physicality that have become his forte. Black plays Ignacio, a lowly cook in a monastery in central Mexico who feeds orphans by day, and wrestles in the town square at night. Ignacio teams up with Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez), a street urchin who tormented him, to form a tag-team duo that goes up against the strangest wrestlers Mexico has to offer. Besides doing it for money to feed the orphans, Ignacio is also fighting to win the forbidden affections of Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera) with predictable difficulty. While the movie has likeable characters and the plot is enjoyable enough, it can't overcome its plodding pace and formulaic structure enough to keep the movie interesting throughout. Jack Black is a very strong comedic actor, and the wrestling scenes offer plenty of chances for slapstick, physical comedy, but watching him run around in red briefs and blue tights amounts to half the laughs in the movie, and there's just not enough here for him to really work with. When he plays a more well-formed character, as in
School of Rock and High Fidelity, his strengths really show. But in Nacho Libre he's saddled with a caricature. Weighed down by too much low-brow humor and a script that goes nowhere, Nacho Libre just can't make full enough use of Black's talents to overcome the obstacles. --Daniel Vancini
Description
Jack Black is at his comic best as Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery that can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador "Nacho Libre" to earn money for the monastery -- not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun Sister Encarnacion.

great fun.......2007-06-27
This movie is hilarious, from beginning to end. It's so much fun to watch I had to get it for my Husband for Father's Day. He loved it. Makes us laugh just thinking about it. This is a must own.
GOSH DARN FRIGGIN' FUNNY!.......2007-06-13
This movie made me laugh my butt off, I even laughed so hard in the CORN-THROWING part, friggin' heck'a funny! Anyway, the picture is good but not at its best. More like 6 or 7 out of 10. But I can see more detail than on DVD that I didn't noice it in first place until I watched the HD-DVD version on my Optoma HD70 projector on 25 ft widescreen, yep! on XBOX 360 add-on HD-DVD drive. And the sound... sound pretty good, I enjoyed some funny music and singing is kinda a goofball in a good way! Good movie for family, I got this HD-DVD brand new for [...]vand its was friggin' worth it!
Funny Movie.......2007-06-12
If you like Jack Black or Napolean Dynamite you will love this movie. It's FUNNY!
Chancho, I need to barrow some sweats!.......2007-05-28
Admittedly I did not voluntarily watch this film. Instead I was forced by my brother-in-law who swore it would be funny. Even after the first viewing I was only mildly entertained. I have no idea how I ended up watching the film again, undoubtedly by my sneaky brother-in-law, but I was surprised to find myself enjoying the film I had previously not cared for. Slowly but surly I have watched the film several times over, always accompanied by my husband who absolutely loved the film. In fact, it is large part due to his constant mimicking of the film that I probably now find so much humor in it. How very Monty Python of him!
dreary.......2007-05-03
What can I say? I have looked through the other reviews and can hardly disagree with the consensus. Therefore I will unnecessarily write yet another review that will simply repeat everything that's already been said.
Yes, what a slog. Though a fan of Jack Black, I was both shocked and saddened to see him in this tedious tripe.
I suppose the script's premise must have seemed a lot more hilarious on paper than it turned out to be once they hitched Black up in those turquoise tights.
There are very few laughs. I think in large part this is because Black is harnessed: forced to deliver all his lines through his clenched and rigid Mexican accent.
But whatever your theory is, you gotta agree: there are very few laughs.

Not the best movie for my 3 year old.......2006-11-11
This was a movie my older kids loved as kids. Now 10 years later, I realized how crazy this movie is.. Maybe I will break it back out when she is 8 or 9..haha
"Are We There Yet" gets $18 million, but THIS BOMBS???.......2005-02-05
They're essentially the same movie, only "Bebe's Kids" is actually funny. Faizon Love's voice, as Robin Harris, is spot-on (a bit eerie, in fact), and the story is told part cartoony / part naturally. From Bruce Smith, the creator of Disney's "The Proud Family", it contains a few rap-music numbers ("He Ain't Havin' It" being the best) that threaten to derail the story, but they're brief enough to ignore.
The transfer is typical Paramount non-remastered conversion from film stock, but it's finally in widescreen (I even caught a joke that's missing from the fullscreen tape) and has good sound. You'll need that to catch the mass of infectiously quotable lines aplenty.
"Test tube baby."

Short of Top Gun, this could be the definitive boys movie of the 1980s. An 18-year-old (Jason Gedrick) gets instruction from an old vet (Louis Gossett Jr.) in how to fly an F-16 jet and kick butt in the Middle East, all while listening to his Walkman and--oh, yeah--saving his father from terrorist clutches. Gossett wears his tough-love face while the kids run rampant. Speaking of kids, young guys must like this comic-book movie, as its success spawned three sequels. But watch out for the Reagan-era jingoism and political reductiveness. --Tom Keogh

An Excellent Mixture of Top Gun, Firefox and Wargames.......2006-07-29
I was 20 years old when the movie came to the theaters and to this day it still references to great moments in history. From The Cold War to The War in Iraq. The action is there. The Special Effects is there. The Story is there. and The Music is definately there. (Speaking of which I finally got my hands on The song that never made the IRON EAGLE soundtrack. OLD ENOUGH TO ROCK AN ROLL by Rainey Haynes. It's the background music that was playing during the race between Doug Masters and Knotcher). The only little flaw from the movie was the firing of the Maverick AG Missile while the F-16 was still on the ground but hey it was very easy to shrug it off. However it would have been more hilarious if the maverick fell to the ground first and then takes of to the intended target. ALL IN ALL, THE MOVIE STILL ROCKS TODAY.
If you can't suspend disbelief then don't watch any movies.......2006-04-08
I'm sick and tired of reading reviews from these people that expect this movie to be super realistic and complain. My advice to the people that didn't like this movie. Stop watching tv in general cause you'll never be happy, you don't know how to suspend disbelief. Like for example someone says that they didn't refuel enough on the flight over to the middle east and there should have been 5 mid air refuelings. Do you guys really want to watch 5 mid air refuelings in a movie cause I don't. That would be boring for sure. This movie is good don't believe the reviews of the ignorant please.
Iron Eagle.......2006-03-15
I enjoyed Iron Eagle very much. It was full of action, suspense and was just a great movie.
80s teen flick + top gun = delicious cheese, thrilling action.......2005-08-10
Iron Eagle is about a group of teenagers who need to save one of their fathers from the clutches of an evil unnamed country. Of course the US government is too weak to act, so they enlist the aid of Chappy, steal a few fighter planes, and take care of business.
The opening scene with the "snake run" is soooo 80s! A race to prove manhood between a motorcycle and an airplane. Through canyons! And the last guy who did it DIED!
The flying scenes are pretty well done and are at least as thrilling as those in Top Gun or other movies of the period. There are plenty of satisfying explosions, even from things that seem like they ought not explode.
Ready for some easy-on-the-brain entertainment? Give Iron Eagle a try!
Still fun after all these years.......2005-03-22
Four Iron Eagle movies were made. This is by far the best. Often true of any series of movies, the first is so good it inspires sequels. I saw this movie during its first release. It was great then and it is still fun today. Surprisingly the aircraft are still used today and so it seems timely even now when you consider what is happening in Iraq. Filmed during Ronald Reagan's administration it is interesting how this could apply even today. All in all a stand out movie that is still fun to watch today. This is one most the family will enjoy.
A high school graduate finds that his father has been shot down over a Middle Eastern country and is being held hostage. He has three days to rescue him before he will be hanged. He enlists the aid of his fellow flying club friends and a retired Air Force Colonel to concoct a plan to fly over and rescue his father. Good acting, great flying sequences, and excellent music soundtrack make this worth catching. I love the soundtrack, especially his flying song by Queen. Good quality DVD with little in the way of extras. Still worth adding to your collection of family action movies.

Because of his tragic death on the set of The Crow, we'll never know if Brandon Lee would have turned one successful film into a popular series. But one look at this tepid sequel suggests that not even the charismatic Lee could have rescued The Crow movies from the burden of a lackluster screenplay. Based on the popular comic books by James O'Barr, this sequel finds Vincent Pérez as a man named Ashe, who is murdered along with his young son by a gang of drug-running thugs under the employ of slimy kingpin Judah Earl (Richard Brooks). Ashe is resurrected with the help of a tattoo artist named Sarah (Mia Kirschner), whereupon he begins a campaign of revenge against his killers. More a rehash than a sequel, the film repeats the grungy, dark look of urban decay from The Crow, but its combination of violence, heavy-handed symbolism, and tacky sentiment make this a film strictly for nihilistic teens. Then again, no movie in which veteran punkster Iggy Pop plays a sleazeball can be considered a total loss. --Jeff Shannon
Description
This action-packed sequel to THE CROW explodes on screen with hot new stars Vincent Perez (I DREAMED OF AFRICA) and sexy Mia Kirshner! After a brutal attack by an evil drug cartel, the murder victim (Perez) is brought back to life by a mysterious crow. With the help of a beautiful woman named Sarah (Kirshner), he exacts revenge on his killers one by one ... only to realize his enemy, the lethal Judah, has discovered the one weakness that can destroy him forever!
Customer Reviews:
Falls Short of the Original Crow.......2007-03-09
If this movie had been the first in the Crow series, then its likely that more movie fans would have liked it. However, there was a first Crow movie starring the late Brandon Lee and its to that first movie that this Crow and the other Crow sequels are compared to. On those grounds, this Crow merits no more than a 4 out of 5 rating.
Let's face it, Vincent Perez is not a good substitute for Brandon Lee. The first 15 minutes of this movie were incomprehensible and had little to do with the rest of the movie.
However, there are some redeeming factors to this movie namely the music and the cinematography. Add in a script that has a strong second half, and you have a movie that is worth a rental at least.
Good, not great........2006-11-26
Seeing The Crow flash across the screen again was something I wasn't sure I'd be able to experience again after the tragic misfortunes of the first Crow movie. I've heard it said that one of the crew members on the first movie actually thought it was cursed.
But this second movie, which is based around a new Crow (Vincent Perez) and the returning Sarah from the first movie (played in this one by the beautiful and dark Mia Kirshner) wasn't cursed like the first one, the curse this had was that it was a sequel to something that likely didn't need one. Although I enjoyed the dark circumstances that surrounded the actual onscreen play, with the nod to "La Dia De los Muertos" (The Day Of The Dead) being my favorite, the story about a murdered father who returns to avenge his son, to me, takes away from the romantic overtones of the first movie and the Crow comic book overall.
The original story was written by James O'Barr to help him exorcize the demons he lived with after losing his first love early in life and he's made mention that in truth, the Crows story was told then, and in his eyes had been told completely. But as with all things we find interesting or fall in love with, it was decided that there needed to be more, so they made more.
I kind of doubt Brandon Lee would have come back for the sequel if he'd lived as I'm sure he would have felt, as O'Barr did, that Eric Dravens story had been told. I make a few leaps here, making mention of things James has said to me and maybe a little of what I hope Brandon Lee would have done had he survived the accident that took his life, but I make them with the best intentions.
I enjoyed the movie, being a comic book geek, I was sure I would. I have to admit to having felt a little betrayed when the sequel came out, just as I was when the ensuing comic follow-ups came out, but the Crow has become an avenger of wrongs that couldn't be put right any other way, a dark hero to the masses who suffer and have no way to let that out other than to dream of a hero who would go beyond death to right their wrongs and although Eric and Shelleys story was told to completion, there are more stories to tell. This is one of them. There are others, there will be others, likely as many as there are people with stories of their own, because truly, who among us doesn't feel the need at some point in our lives to be avenged?
See the movie, be forewarned that it contains violence in the extreme, some nudity and a lot of what might be termed "the darker aspects of life", drugs, gangs, betrayels, S&M and torture. Iggy Pop, though not great either, was a welcome touch of dark realism to the play on the screen. If you go in with no expectations based on the first movie or the comic book, this 3 stars quickly becomes 3 1/2 or 4.
Come on people really...It's a crow story........2006-10-25
The terrible mistake most viewers make when watching a Crow movie or a reading another Crow Novel or Comic is that they compare the "Crow" in question to the previous Crow or Crows. You have to understand that this character isn't "Eric" (Crow from the first film), This isn't Motor City Detroit, This is The City Of Angels and the main characters name is Ashe this is his life, his perspective. Its not supposed to be like the first Crow they are two different people and two different stories, thats all they are just stories, they are not sequels or prequels just installments. If you could see everyones life before your eyes would they look the same? No they wouldn't. Why? Because were all different. All the folks who gave this movie bad reviews did so because they are standing to close to a big picture, step back and see the big picture. The world and the ways of the Crow aren't so narrow that they would stay limited to the confines and brooding post-gothic nature of the first film.
Most of the people giving reviews probably don't even know that James O' Barr wrote the first Crow after losing the love of his life to a drunk driver, so all that pain, frustration, and hatred went into those pages and script. You can't create pain like that you have to know it. This is why the first Crow has an unfair advantage against all the new Crow movies, you can't turn water into wine, these directors had to work it in the best way they could.
By giving such harsh critique to these movies you may alter someones judgement and cause them to miss out on a really good film. Crow:City Of Angels was a good movie and a good Crow story. I myself loved the first film the most, I even remember the trailers that played "Big Empty" By Stone Temple Pilots which I still listen to today. But please don't drag this second installments name through the mud.
-Jon
Spectacular? Riiiiiight...........2006-10-22
I was fortunate not to spend any money specifically on this movie. I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes... incoherent beginning, and overly stylized particularly where Ashe becomes "the avenger" (for lack of a better name). Nothing like the original at all, which I love by comparison.
Some redeeming factors, but not many.......2006-05-13
I haven't seen this film since it left theatres, so I suppose the visual impact of it must have been somewhat significant; I haven't forgotten one scene and recall most of it in detail. (Tim Pope is another one of those directors who mistakes music videos for movies.)
There's a problem, though: it was really bad.
The problem, as I recall, is that we know nothing about Ashe Crowe (wow. what an original last name for this movie.): he's just some unbelievably nice father who (lives?) in a garage shop with his son, Danny. Till guess what? A bunch of drug-using, scummy semi-gangsters come and ruin his, uh, idyllic life by murdering his son and then him. Vincent Perez is nowhere near Brandon Lee's level of talent as an actor, and Lee himself was no Olivier.
But Iggy Pop! He's perfect as the badass scumbag ("nothing personal, sport...") who puts the final shot in Perez's character on the docks. He's so good that it's almost like he's not acting. The best scene in this movie is when Crowe, after blasting Pop's character to nearly nothing, places two coins in his eyes and sends him floating on the scummy city river: heavy handed symbolism, yes, very striking, yes as well.
Otherwise, it sucked and strikes no comparison to the Gothic, almost believable majesty of the original. I remember reading James O'Barr saying that he wanted nothing to do with the film before it came out and did not want his name in the credits. Good move on his part.
Watch the original and read the comic book.

Customer Reviews:
fun flick.......2007-07-03
This is a really fun movie, and amazingly similar in plot to the remake of *Ocean's 11*, which came many years later.
Brosnan's character is like Danny Ocean, having spent his jail time plotting to get back his girl and get even with the guy who sent him to jail and walked away with the beauty. A cat-and-mouse game follows leading to the finale, where Brosnan's big plan is enacted.
Definitely worth watching.
Beautiful horses -- beautiful Pierce!.......2006-11-03
I am so glad that I bought this movie -- Pierce Brosnan really knows his way around women and horses. I enjoyed the story.
The Heist.......2006-05-31
A fun flick, with beautiful Brosnan growing into his bones
as he hit age 35. An elegant man playing a small-time hood
is a nice contrast. Note the hair slicked back. Audrey
Wood plays the bubble-headed moll who divides her favors
between Brosnan and Skerrit, showing little emotion for either
guy. Nice seedy race track atmosphere, pretty hot love scenes,
and a light hearted adio accompanied by the Spanish version
of "My Way". Recommended.

A Great Heist Movie.......2005-08-12
Where can one start with a review of The Heist. It is a well crafted movie from begining to end. All the colorful characters are well defined and exciting to watch. There is a scene in the middle of the movie where the bad guys are attempting to figure out how Neil "Pierce" is going to rob the track and are able to predict a great many thing and still Neil is able to outwit them all and the cop who is trying to put him back in jail. The Gipsy Kings version of "My Way" at the end is great. Pierce Brosnan loved this story so much and the whole making of a caper movie in general and that this is one of the reasons he went on to develop and star in the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair", but thats another movie review.
Brosnan's good, but movie doesn't make it around the track.......2005-06-13
This movie is a poorly made farce, on a par with a bad "I Love Lucy" episode. Its only virtues are a fine performance by Pierce Brosnan, showing the "action" talent he later developed as Thomas Crowne and James Bond, and the Gypsy Kings' cover of "My Way".
Chewing gum for the mind.
Deserves zero stars, if it weren't for Brosnan.
