The intense soundtrack of Boiler Room is a fitting underscore for this movie, which pulses with the vigor of young, rich, amoral men wreaking havoc. This is not the antisocietal havoc of Fight Club, but the more deliberate mayhem that comes from greed run amok. The testosterone-junkie brokers of J.T. Marlin (the only female in the office is Abby, the receptionist and love interest, played by Nia Long) are out to make the sale, and whether that sale is legal or ethical doesn't matter.
Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a 19-year-old college dropout who strives for approval from his father (Ron Rifkin), a judge who is horrified that his son operates a 24-hour illicit casino. When an old friend visits the casino with a fellow broker, Davis is impressed by their wads of money and yellow Ferrari, and decides to join the firm. In no time he's making sales and settling into the groove of the office and all the after-hours perks, but the dream fades when Davis discovers the scam that is making all of the brokers wealthy beyond their dreams.
Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. However, as a fable of modern society and a nostalgic vehicle about the days of yuppies past, Boiler Room is right on the money. --Jenny Brown

Triple X.......2007-06-02
Vin Deisel wimps out in this movie. At the end when the FBI is gonna raid the office he should kick butt!! He doesn't, so it sucks. The best scene is where the Boss tells one of the Stockbrokers that he can't sit down ever again! He has to stand until he makes a sale hahaha. Ben Affleck isn't as good as Alec Baldwin in Glen Gary GlenRoss. He tries to be, but can't. It just isn't good enough of a performance to equal Mr. Baldwin's. Vin Deisel should shoot people with machine guns in the film. He should shoot Affleck hahaha. Go Triple X!!
Good Movie.......2007-05-14
I spent some time in the car business at one point in my life and I developed an appreciation for taking what is yours and making it mine. With that said, if you liked Wall Street and Rouge Trader, then this 90's movie with a similiar storyline should find its way into your collection. For the price, you can't really go wrong.
Good, but cannot overcome "Wall Street".......2006-07-20
Both "Wall Street" and "Boiler Room" have the same moral outline. In both movies, young, ambitious, and smart individuals are looking to make an enormous amount of money in the quickest time possible. Both are doing it on the stock market. Both want to make their fathers proud, and both quickly learn that the only way to get the fast "wall street" money is to get it illegally. Once they realize they are committing crimes, they do it anyway. Then, of course, comes a braking point. Both movies open with shots of New-York city. Only in the "Boiler Room", the soundtrack is rap music. That shows us the evolution of time since "Wall Street" came out. Well, the tastes in music changed, that's for sure, but no change occurred in human nature. "Greed is good", said Gordon Gekko. Greed still reigns supreme in "Boiler Room".
The love story does not end anywhere in "Boiler Room". In this story, the love interest is not a whore and does not like him for the money. And she really needs the job. In this movie, she is a positive character, whereas in "Wall Street", the love interest is a negative character.
Also, in both movies, we do not see the main characters really enjoying their new found wealth. Yeah, Bud Fox did buy a nice apartment, but we never see him free of worry, free of self-doubt and guilt. The same applies for Seth.
Vin Diesel, an excellent actor, ads flavor to the movie, along with Jamie Kennedy and a bunch of other young actors trying to prove themselves. Ben Affleck is in the movie too, although you only see him once or twice and the movie could have gone on without him. That's too bad. I don't know why he agreed to such a mediocre part.
Overall, an enjoyable, easy to follow movie. Not as glamorous, not as flashy, but gets the point across. However, not able to surpass "Wall Street".
Boiler Room May Boil Your Nerves.......2006-07-10
Some folks might rent or buy this DVD for its well known names, but Vin Disel and Ben Afflec play very small roles It is Giovanni Ribsi that shines. He plays a young college drop out, who turns to an in-house, illegal gambling den to help him release his inner rage and built up anxieties towards his demanding father.
(SPOILERS)
But it is his discovery of a Boiler Room operation hawking non-existent stocks and bonds for non-existent companies that really steers this movie.
Fantastic interactions between the main character, and Vin Disel character. I appreciated the relationship beteen Giovanni and the secretary character, but I felt it was under-developed and weak. Could have been left out, or developed better.
I saw this one in the theater, and now own on DVD, and would recommend it to any Pre-MBA student, or Wall Street wannabe. It is great training.

(:D) ....ok .......2006-06-08
This movie gives you the chills, it reminds you of the all-time classic ''Wall-Street'' with Bud Fox & Gordon Gecko. Only this time it is played by Seth Davis as Bud Fox. Boiler Room has an all-star cast with Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Nia Long, & Ben Affleck... If you haven't seen this film, you are missing out, it is unforgettable and it is one of those keeper DVD's to have in your collection. - Chad Castorina

A rare example of a sequel topping the original, F/X 2 gives us more of the adventures of special-effects whiz Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown). Rollie is recruited by his wife's ex-husband into developing one of his devices for a police sting, but when it goes terribly wrong, Rollie's on the run and in need of help from ex-cop friend Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy). Most of the fun, of course, comes from seeing Rollie in action, whether he's using toys developed in his lab (such as a remote-controlled clown suit) or improvising gimmicks on the run, such as in an exciting supermarket showdown. Rachel Ticotin appears as Rollie's wife, and two actresses who have appeared on Broadway, Josie de Guzman (Guys and Dolls, 1992) and Joanna Gleason (Tony winner for Into the Woods, 1987), play Leo's old flames, police computer whiz Velez and assistant D.A. Liz, respectively. --David Horiuchi
Description
Bryan Brown and Brian Dennehy are back for an all-new action-thriller that continues the F/Xsaga with stylish wit, unrelenting suspense and amazing high-tech action. But when his girlfriend's ex-husband (Tom Mason), a police detective, persuades him to devise an illusion to capture a serial killer, Rollie is once again lured into the lethal world of make-believe. And soon, he finds himself trapped in a murderous maze of deceit and treachery in which he must depend on his ingenious tricksand his friendship withDetective Leo McCarthy (Dennehy)to expose a terrifying underworld conspiracy...but only if he can stay alive!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent movie.......2006-03-17
Ah, the return of the characters from the first movie. KEWL.
This sequel is well done, and more enjoyable to me than the first one.
'Course, I like Brian Dennehy . . . and the mix of the two men works very well, once again.
Plenty of action, suspense, and, once again, triumph!
F/X 2 is a great ingenious movie with plot and action!.......2002-12-22
F/X 2 is a great ingenious film with plot and action! F/X 2 stars Brian Brown and Brian Dennehy as Rollie Tyler and Leo McCarthy and they are together for one last adventure to stop Mob from stealing gold Medilians from Vadican embassy in intaly!Great film! Very inventive and well thought out! I Like this movie despite what the movie critics thought about this fim in 1991! I wish there was an F/X 3 but unfortunatly that didn't happen. Despite what others say the movie great and is better then the original movie from 1986. Go find it! It's great movie!
A memorable sequel.......2000-09-08
It's not often we see a sequel that excels the original, but F/X 2 is impressive in accomplishing just that. In this version, Brown has left the film world to work on special effects for himself. He's into toys this time, and Bluey, his remote robot is a prize! Again, the Mafia is involved in the story development, this time over a set of gold coins stolen from a Vatican art exhibit years ago. Brown's again co-opted by corrupt cops [what an enduring theme!] and again he's on the run. This time, Dennehy extends his 'good cop' role from the first F/X in coming to Rollie's aid.
Unlike the first film, F/X 2 raises Brian Dennehy's participation significantly, giving him many opportunities to engage in droll wit. He manages the role with style and honesty. The exchanges with Joanna Gleason as the Ass't DA are quality Dennehy. Gleason herself adds a lustre to the film, providing an engaging contrast to Rachel Ticotin's role as Tyler's girl friend.
F/X 2, likes it predecessor, is a timeless film. The repeated themes of corrupt cops and Mafia intrigues doesn't make this film boring. Quite the opposite, showing how prevalent and wide ranging their activities can be, both for good as well as sinister reasons. This film is worth a place in your inventory, if for no other reason than Brown's performance. He's a quality actor when given the opportunity - and this film was an even better expression of his worth than the original.
Better Than I Remembered.......2000-06-30
I watched both "F/X" films at the same time and was surprised that the second one holds up better than the first. This movie has a raffish charm, like Hitchcock in his playful "To Catch a Thief" mode. Highly recommended.

tokyo's underworld.......2006-12-11
if u like fallen angels by won kar wai...you probably might like this one...i found out about this movie 2 years ago when i was reading a media japanese magazine..it mentioned that the movie tells the experience of foreigners making a living in tokyo...however the movie is not just all about that, it tells story about infringe individual living in tokyo which is cool..we have the crip gangster, the junky wife, a blind old women, and the cool ragged guy whos planning to go back to kyoto. The shot of the movie is crisp and clear showing the city of tokyo. I enjoy seeing the movie showing troubled people living in the big city. the movie was made in 1997 and it seems that the movie have not gotten old with its style and subtleness Go watch the film if u want to see the dark side of tokyo...highly recommended for people who like fallen angels..
White Candy.......2005-08-20
Similar to Chunking Express, Junk Food consists of four, instead of two, intertwining stories. The first and fourth sections show the morning routine of an blind, old Japanese woman, waking up, buying bread and milk, praying at the family alter; however, it is the second segment where the true story begins.
The segment begins with a pretty woman dressed only in a man's shirt and panties sitting on a floor within the environs of a dilapidated building. After smoking some drugs, the woman makes her way over to a bed where she ties up the man slumbering there. The man believes that they are going to engage in some kinky sex, including asphyxiation with a plastic bag, however, the woman proceeds to strangle the man to death with a cord.
Leaving the ramshackle building, the woman, Miyuki, makes her way to work. Miyuki is quite attractive, but she suffers from a constantly runny nose and her personal demeanor is quite abrasive. Even within the environs of her upscale workplace, Miyuki indulges in her addiction. However, after discovering she has used all of her stash, she at first demands money from her boss, who she slept with in the past, and approaches a number of people to find her drugs, including prostitutes dressed as schoolgirls and a number of other people. She eventually finds someone with the goods, but the price she pays for the drugs is quite high.
The third part, the longest and most convoluted, depicts the lives of several immigrants in Japan: a Chinese-American prostitute, Pakistanis, a Mexican female wrestler, and several individuals of mixed blood. The segment is quite violent, but because of the way it jumps between characters, one is unable to truly feel for or identify with any of the characters. However, Junk Food is important because of its depiction of minorities in Japan, a subject that is more often than not swept under the rug. Yet, I think the film would have been stronger if it focused solely on Miyuki.
Filmed primarily with digital cameras, Junk Food is quite grainy, however, like Anno's Love & Pop and the Okinawa scenes in All About Lily Chou Chou the use of digital cameras gives the film a realistic edge that cannot be found in more polished products. If you get the chance, check out the film. However, if you are truly interested in the depiction of minorities in Japanese film watch Iwai's Swallowtail Butterfly or some of Imamura Shohei's early films.
Excellent movie except..........2005-05-09
Great movie, but there is English dialogue in the movie that is very hard to understand and no subtitles are provided.

Shannon Tweed, only semi good in her own brand of softer adult films. In this movie she plays a cop trying to catch a killer that goes out at night as a call girl and kills the men who pay her to give them a good time. Don't waste your money on this one, its not worth it!
