Editorial Review:

Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan gives his self-mocking humor full flourish in City Hunter, adapted from a Japanese comic book. But that doesn't mean there isn't a solid dose of action--after a brilliantly cartoonish opening, the movie settles into a half-comedy, half-thriller variation on Die Hard, in which Eurotrash terrorists have hijacked a plush ocean cruise liner and super-detective Ryu Saeba (Chan) has to stop them, aided by his lovely, love-lorn assistant (Joey Wong, A Chinese Ghost Story, Green Snake) and a beautiful undercover secret agent (Chingmy Yau, Naked Killer). Though City Hunter is short on breathtaking stunts, there's plenty of well-choreographed hand-to-hand combat. Jackie Chan's lecherous, self-absorbed character (accompanied by a parade of girls into skimpy or skin-tight outfits) come across like a gleeful parody of James Bond (slightly marred by a bit of homophobia). All in all, a high energy romp. --Bret Fetzer

Though the "inspirational teacher" theme may feel done to death, Freedom Writers succeeds because it emphasizes the students as much as the teacher. Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank, Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don't Cry) comes to a southern California high school bubbling over with naive optimism, but quickly discovers that her unruly classroom isn't easily won over by her good intentions. After a few floundering attempts to connect with her students, Gruwell gives them the assignment of keeping journals about their own lives--an assignment that the class bites into with relish, which eventually bonds them together and pushes racial rivalries aside. This plotline has been made before, sometimes well, sometimes poorly; Freedom Writers, by drawing heavily from the published journals of the students--and thanks to a (mostly) unheroic script, direction that emphasizes individual characters over stereotypes, and rigorous performances from the whole cast--makes the story seem fresh and genuine. Swank does solid work, but the standouts are April L. Hernandez as a girl whose gang wants her to lie and send an innocent boy to jail and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) as a teacher who resents Gruwell's offbeat success. Also featuring Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Scott Glenn (The Right Stuff), and a plethora of strong young actors. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Teaching is (or at least should be) a "Wonderful Burden".......2007-07-01

Although there is a certain political agenda poured on this film, it can all be forgiven due to its one unique message. Teaching is a calling, not a career. And although there are certain merits in the arguments of the antagonist in the story, about the need to be fair to students who want to learn and succeed, a true master teacher knows that differences are made one student at a time, and as a master teacher taught me in a class on teaching; "They don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care."

So I feel this is an inspiring film for teachers, and would be teachers, in every endeavor, or as the film states, those "blessed with a wonderful burden"

This was an awesome movie! My High School students enjoyed it so much that many of them went out and rented it so that they could view it a second or third time. They have requested to read the "Freedom Writers Diary this next year. Several have been inspired to write their own stories and these are learning disabled kids that hate to read and write.

I rented this movie the day it was released on DVD, then had to buy it & have already watched in twice more. A powerful movie that represents so many of our youth that are too often forgotten, or considered failed w/o any chances/hope. Definate food for thought & a must see for everyone.

There is NOTHING original about this movie. It has been done before and better (Dangerous Minds & Stand and Deliver). It's portrial of the inner city students is watered down and the acting is nothing special. I would not even suggest catching this one on HBO for free.

Waist Deep may not be believable from start to finish, but it's a slickly produced and reasonably entertaining entry in the "gangsta noir" genre that includes such previous films as Dead Presidents, Set it Off, and Never Die Alone. In his first leading role since playing a somewhat similar character in 2001's Baby Boy, Tyrese Gibson plays O2 (short for "Oxygen"), who's just emerged from six years in prison and is looking to go legit all the way. That's when his car gets stolen - with his young son Junior still in the backseat - and O2 retaliates by inciting a gang war on the streets of Los Angeles. He recruits his unpredictable pot-head brother Lucky (Larenz Tate) and the reluctant assistance of a hot hustler named Coco (Meagan Good) in a bank-robbing scheme to pay the $100,000 ransom that a brutal machete-wielding thug named Meat (played by rapper The Game) has demanded for Junior's safe return. Director Vondie Curtis-Hall (whose son, H. Hunter Hall, plays Junior) keeps the twisting plot moving at a pulse-quickening pace, and the movie looks great thanks to Shane Hurlbut's widescreen cinematography, but the build-up of improbable (or just plain ludicrous) events becomes a little too much to handle as Waist Deep gets waist deep in its own predictability. On the plus side, Gibson and Good make an appealing action couple, and despite its overly maudlin conclusion, the movie's got some emotional depth that comes as a pleasant surprise amidst its otherwise forgivable shortcomings. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars you'll get a laugh or two out of it.......2007-06-12

There is a lot of action in this film as well as gratuitous violence. But there are too many absudities to take this film all that seriously. The film also sends a bad message to youngsters attracted to the gangsta life. The message it sends is that if you are a smart gangsta, you can get away with just about anything and live happily ever after. You'll have money, women and anything else you desire.

The main character in this film played by Tyrese Gibson, isn't an active gang banger but was recently released from prison and trying to turn his life around. The ironic thing about this is that in the process of turning his life around, he must utilize is skills as a gangsta.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, start to finish.......2007-06-11

The plot on this movie is straight out of a ghetto high school play, unreal from start to finish. The plot has been used over and over in "B" rated movies, actor gets in trouble, cant go to cops, actor must solve problem himself. Why did I waste money on this movie???? It's funny that even "amazon's" review calls this movie "unreal" from start to finish. Now I enjoy the occasional "ghetto" movie (boyz n the hood, menace 2 society...) but they had realistic plots/stories, this one however starts with B.S., An ex-felon/convict gets a job as a security guard with a gun...and that pretty much describes how the rest of the movie is, Horrible/unrealistic.

3 out of 5 stars An easy to follow drama that will keep you interested.......2007-06-11

Waist Deep is the story of an ex-con who is trying to reform himself and make a better life for his son when circumstances force him to return to a life of crime. Tyrese Gibson stars as O2, a man who just got out of prison and is working at rebuilding his life. He's got a job as a security guard and takes care of his son. After picking his son up from school, O2 is distracted by a beautiful woman crossing the street. The next thing he knows he's being carjacked and the robbers are speeding away--unaware that his son is in the back seat. After enlisting the help of the woman who distracted him (Meagan Good in the role of "hooker with a heart of gold"), O2 learns that his son is being held captive by a ruthless gang leader who wants $100,000 in exchange for the boy.

Waist Deep was action packed and easy to follow. It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it certainly wasn't the worst. I like the idea of a man who wants nothing more than to reform and show his son that a life of crime isn't his only option. The fact that this man is then forced to choose between leading by example and having someone to lead only makes the storyline more intriguing. I didn't know what to expect from this film, but I was entertained from start to finish. It won't win any awards, but it will definitely keep you interested.

5 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment in this implausible high energy urban crime flick.......2007-06-09

No apologies. This 2006 urban crime film is supposed to be exactly what it is - fast paced, high energy and lots of action. Starring Tyrese Gibson as an ex-con trying to go straight and Meagan Good as a hooker with her own sad history, I couldn't help but root for the two of them as they tried to save Tyrese's son who had been kidnapped by a bunch of bad guys. Set in Los Angeles and featuring a predominantly African American cast, there is never a dull moment. There are car chases, fistfights, gun battles and it all happens fast enough to not lose interest. Also, there is defiantly an emotional impact in some of the scenes, especially in the moments when the ex-con connects with his son. Yes, the plot is absolutely implausible, and some might call it socially irresponsible and not politically correct but this film was never meant to compete with Shakespeare. I found it very enjoyable and therefore do recommend it as lightweight entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars pretty decent.......2007-05-20

As you probably know, this movie is about a father who is forced out of his car by a bad guy with a gun in his hand (that takes place out in the streets of Los Angeles).

As the guy drives away in the fathers car, his son is still in there (in the back seat) so as the bad guy is driving away, the father is running forward down the street with a gun that happened to be with him, and shooting wildly in the small hope of hitting the bad guy (and having little consideration for all the innocent people who happen to be walking the streets) and getting him to stop the vehicle.

Once the dust has settled, and all the shooting stops, we find out that the bad guy wants the father to pay him $100,000 by the following evening or else the son dies. So what's a father to do? How about finding a girl and going around robbing banks? That's how he finds the money.

The first half of the movie is violent and filled with swear words. The movie is pretty entertaining overall for all you action fans out there, and the ending is somewhat surprising and emotional. Though I don't quite understand at the very end how the helicopter happened to find the father so quickly. I guess the helicopter just happened to be flying around, and it just so happens the guy they were looking for was nearby. Yeah, that's it.

Description

Based on a popular Japanese comic strip, Hong Kong's high-flying martial arts action hero Jackie Chan stars as private Ryu Saeba in City Hunter. Hired to find the runaway daughter of a Japanese publishing tycoon, Ryu's first impulse is to turn the job down - until he sees a picture of the beautiful Shizuko (Kumiko Goto). Hot on her heels, Ryu tracks her down on board a cruise ship, and much to the annoyance of his jealous female sidekick Kaori (Joey Wong) the womanizing Ryu seems more interested in catching Shizuko's attention than returning her safely to her father. However, Ryu's romantic plans quickly go astray when a gang of ruthless criminals hijack the ship and hold the passengers to ransom. To save the day Jackie Chan's unique action style reigns supreme in a series of brilliantly conceived fight sequences as Ryu swings into action to dispatch the bad guys and rescue the goergeous Shizuko!

5 out of 5 stars jackie vs gary.......2006-08-07

this flick is kinda cool... although i prefer the fighting sequences. i think that they tried to do this flic an family action flick. but anyways, what impresses me the most in this film is that use see how good people from the west is comparing to people from the east. take th fight scene jackie chan v gary daniels. u see that this is withoutv a doubt gary daniels best performance... jackie is funny as usual... if like jackie chan, or gary daniels thisis a must see movie

2 out of 5 stars My Review.......2006-07-13

This movie was an ok movie to watch but I think this movie could be alot more better made. But I like Jackie chan's movie so i'm not going to complain that much about this movie.

1 out of 5 stars pitiful.......2006-03-31

I've been reading the reviews... and noticing how everyone who gave it 'top marks' saying it was 'hylarious', 'the bets movie ever', and so on and so forth, have never seen the original anime, or even better, read the manga.
If they had I'm sure none of those people would give it more than it's due - 1 star (for J.C. fans, maybe 2).
This movie is a poor excuse for an adaptation. And a disgrace for the original City Hunter. Jackie Chan as Saeba Ryo?! Puh-lease!
The attempts at manga/anime humor fall on barren ground and turn the movie into an even more of a farce as it already is.
I wouldn't recomend this movie not even to my worst enemy and I agree with the reviewer who said 'when you die and go to Hell, Satan makes you watch this movie'. I can't imagine a torture greater than that. I'd take boiling oil any time!

2 out of 5 stars don't believe the people telling you to just try this out and you'll see, yeah fu^%&%^ right you f^%$^&$& pieces of ^$%&$.......2006-03-16

So , I had heard from a lot of people that this is a very fun movie.

Other than seeing some of the hottest chinese chicks I have ever seen, nothing too special about this flick. I guess it's based off a comic book, so at least it makes sense of why this is so stupid.

The parts that threy call jokes in this movie include things like women falling over because their boobs are just too big. Come on Jackie, do an r movie, get out of the way, and showcase these women that you work with.

The action is pretty substandard all-around. The end fight just looks like they are hitting weaopns as hard as they can against eachother, this waas ok back in the 60's, but I expect a little more out of jackie. I think that there was around 3-4 min of action that I enjoyed in this.

To be honest, the best part of this movie is when the 2 gay guys start singing on stage with a woman or two. That song was freaking hilarious, AND WOULD HAVE BEEN EVEN BETTER IF IT WAS EFFING TRANSLATED. I HAVE VHS TAPES FROM LIKE 82 THAT HAVE SUBS ON THE SONGS.

Also the streetfighter scene, don't believe the hype, it sucks. It is one of the few funny parts in the entire movie, but is only good when Chun Li shows up.

EXTRAS-interview with jakie and the idiot of this project, jing wong. Jackie has a very lively interview talking about how america didn't like him because he didn't get to do what he wants to do. Action 1st, storyline 2nd, acting # 27, sound effects #5, special effects #24. This is the first interview with Jackie that I can remember him getting really mad. I thought he was gonna start cussing out evry american, but by the end he is talking about rush hour and seems pretty happy.

5 out of 5 stars just a fun movie.......2006-01-04

I wish people wouldn't bag out this movie on the basis of it not being a serious fighting movie... its not, its obviously not - its just a stupid movie to enjoy in a similarly stupid fashion!!!

The movie in general is light-hearted and silly, though granted they could have put a little more effort into the fights (Jacky doesn't use as many 'enviromental objects' as he usually does), and the music can be a bit irrelevant and occasionally annoying (note the fight between Jacky and Kim in the bedroom, where the music is clearly looped thrice).

Also the english dub is nothing short of DREADFUL, as a part-cantonese I can tell you the dub matches the original about HALF the time - it looks like they tried to sync lips in some scenes by changing the words (but apparently no-one told em it would make for some totally irrelevant speech). Thats not to mention the thick american accents totally disillusioning the viewer. Stick with the cantonese track, and if you don't know cantonese make do with the subtitles, they're way more accurate!

If I was a nitpicker pro movie reviewer I'd probably give this two or three, because there are plenty of areas that could be refined or improved. But remember: this is a 1992 film, rereleased in western society, so don't focus on the music or the effects (which aren't too bad for a 92, actually).

But I aint a nitpicker: I rate on how much I enjoyed a film. And I enjoyed this one! You don't need to know anything about the City Hunter anime to see this, just rent it out cheap and watch it!

It's no wonder Caught Up only garnered haphazard theatrical release in 1998. Director Darin Scott, who is credited with screenplay nods for Tales from the Hood and Sprung, tosses everything--including the kitchen sink--into this noir rip-off that borrows liberally from Chinatown and Bound but lacks the intelligent gravity and grace of the first classic or the stylish, tongue-in-cheek fun of the second. Starring Bokeem Woodbine as Darryl, an ex-con who wants to go straight but who keeps finding himself in unlucky circumstances, Caught Up has laughable dialogue and terrible bug-eyed over-emoting that tries to pass for acting, and wastes the laconic beauty of One False Move costar Cynda Williams, as a femme fatale named Vanessa Dietrich (honest!). Vanessa wraps Darryl around her little finger and embroils him in a voodoo-esque drug plot that will have the viewer rolling on the floor in disbelief. Had Caught Up played its convoluted plot for laughs, it may have at least been a camp parody on the genre, but as it is, it doesn't avoid a single cinematic cliché. Caught Up is a goofy mess of contradictions and implausibility. --Paula Nechak

5 out of 5 stars It has cought up with my interest.......2005-09-07

It was basically a decent movie. The plots keep flipping on you. The first part is silly, but what can you say about the 'hood'? That acid on the head was a bit much though. And they never let us know how the fortune teller finds him. She had to know about him. Glad to see that he was able to finally open his club and get his son.

4 out of 5 stars ISSUES.......2005-09-05

IT WAS A GOOD STORY LINE AND IT REALLY SHOWED THE COMPANY YOU KEEP CAN GET YOU IN ALOT OF TROUBLE SEE IT YOU'LL LIKE IT

3 out of 5 stars Must By As Cynda Williams is from my Hometown.......2002-07-12

I thought it was a very very good suspenseful movie that was a bit biazarre at times but still a good watch. I am very proud of Cynda's performance and, I am amazed at her rapid growth as an actress. Good Flick...........

1 out of 5 stars A REALLY HORRIBLE MOVIE.......2002-02-21

This might be the most terrible movie ever made. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY SUSPENSE AND THRILLS!!!.......2000-08-11

It is truly amazing how someone can be 'Caught Up' in someone else's stupidity and Woodine should have realized that after getting out of prison. But instead, he continues to be caught up in lust, love and money. This was a GREAT movie all the way through. Rent it, buy it, just see it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent point of view.......2006-04-05

I live in the inner city, and am sometimes uncomfortable with what I see our youths values has become. Common curiosities, values, graciousness and morals seem to be a thing of the past. Family values are non existent, family is non existent, children are left to raise themselves, and their lessons on life values have now become street smarts. This movie "Animal" reaches all the impurities that we see in today's society. Hopefully one day the cycle will break.

2 out of 5 stars Hey, Ving. Do your research first, brother........2005-10-16

Let me start out by saying that this movie had me locked all the way through. I was never bored and I thought the performances were well done. But the thing that made the movie a four star movie for me AT FIRST was the Willie Lynch lesson I got from it. Being an African American (by the way, how come we're the only Americans required to state our mother land before American. But anyway) I felt something bitter inside of me stirring at the thought of some master plan laid out long ago to control my community. But of course once the movie was over I did some research. It didn't take long for the movie to drop down to two stars... better yet, MAKE THAT ONE STAR, VING! For those of you looking to blame some stupid white guy for the current plight of the black community, I got some bad news for ya... WILLIE LYNCH NEVER EXISTED AND NEITHER DID HIS LETTERS UNTIL THE EARLY 1990's and only on the internet! Shame on you, Ving, for such an obvious lack of effort seperating historical fact from urban legend. Black people, you can go on back to fighting each other now. We'll just have to figure out why later. Maybe when one of the other races of the world figure out why they fight with each other, perhaps we can learn from them.

4 out of 5 stars A lesson, for the community, that can not be repeated too often.......2005-10-11

It is true that this is an of-told tale regarding the evils of life in the "hood", but, it is another interesting interpretation of the ghetto plite. This one is based on the Willie Lynch papers that gave slave owners a program for controlling slaves that many people believe is the foundatiion for the self hatred and destruction that exists today in those communities. It is also about the relationship between fathers and sons, literal and figurative, that perpetuate self destruction. The acting is impeccable, especially Terrance Howard as the adult son, a man-child still searching for his father's love and approval. Despite the previous review, this is a very worthwhile movie.

1 out of 5 stars A Wretched Film!!.......2005-10-02

Once again, here comes another stinker starring Terrance Howard. Was he behind on the mortgage or what? Terrance Howard and Ving Rhames are too talented for this. The thug gone straight routine is getting kind of monotonous. Why can't writers come up with something more original. With the downright horrible storyline and camcorder-like film, no wonder this mess went straight to DVD!!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Urban Drama With All Star Cast.......2005-09-20

Animal is a very intense and dramatic film with an all star African-American cast. Ving Rhames stars in the film as a man named Animal. He basically spent his entire adult life in prison leaving his young son to grow up without a father---and a mother. Darius (Terrance Howard/Hustle and Flow) is raised by his grandmother and turns to hustling as a means of income. Darius has no problem cursing around his grandmother and he just appears to be a common neighborhood thug and he has no problem putting a hot slug in someone. Animal is in jail and can't help his family much while he is on the inside. Jim Brown stars in the film as a revolutionary who attempts to talk some sense into the barbaric and ignorant Animal.

There were a lot of really great African-American actors in this film (Terrance Howard, Taraj Henson, Jim Brown, Ving Rhames, Paula Jai Parker, and Faizon Love), but it pretty much has gone under the radar and hasn't generated much buzz. It's a pretty sad film, it is along the lines of movies like Boyz In The Hood, South Central, Juice, Menace II Society, and Civil Brand. It's an interesting film.

1 out of 5 stars People who are stuck in the 80's.........2003-12-28

City hunter's sound track was popular (3 different ending theme songs were #1 on the oricon charts in 1986 - 1987) but why would you want to "collect" animation thats 20 years old?

5 out of 5 stars Hunt this out.......2003-09-15

First off, this series is Japanese with English subtitles - and that is the best thing ADV could have done. No dub would capture the frequent changes between tone the characters all use. But don't fret people City Hunter is a very visual anime with regards to plot and humour - even if you're slow at reading you'll keep up with this. Previous dubs have all been terrible changing Ryo's name to Joe anyway...

Second the boxset features an introduction to words or phrases used in the show before each episode which really helps.

Thirdly the music in this show is great (the later boxsets of the series gets even better) and fourth this boxset is great value for money - it's half the price of a season of Tenchi or Trigun and less than Ranma or Slayers too.

There's no reason not to go after this boxset of the Mokkori maniac City Hunter's exploits.
