Description

Miramax Home Entertainment presents STEAL, the electrifying crime thriller starring Stephen Dorff ("Cold Creek Manor," "Blade") and sexy Natasha Henstridge ("The Whole Ten Yards," "Species"). Slim (Dorff) is a charismatic thief leading a notorious team of adrenaline junkies who utilize their extreme sports skills to escape capture. Under pressure from the mob and a crooked cop who wants a piece of the action, they set out on one final set of high-risk heists that could net them a fortune. But what Slim doesn't know is that his beautiful new girlfriend (Henstridge) is a detective whose job is to bring down his gang. Loaded with high-octane stunts, STEAL is an extreme movie thriller that shouldn't be missed. Also known as "Riders."

3 out of 5 stars Big Flaws But Watchable.......2006-08-02

I won't waste time going over the things other reviewers have shared about the film. I'm a woman so I don't care too much for chase films. I am a HUGE Stephen Dorff fan and you probably have to be that or a guy to like this, LOL! Steal is an okay film. It could be much better in several areas:

The plot was decent but there is a such thing as being too flashy and having too much unneeded action. I think Steal goes way too far with the special effects. I would have rather seen trained stunt skaters do their thing then all the unneccessary computer stunts.

The relationship between Slim (Dorff) and Karen( Henstridge) was laughable. They had chemistry but the story was too short to actually follow through with a decent romance. I think the audience was cheated with this part of the film. I would have rather seen a more drawn out romance than to see all of that wasted action. You could never tell how Slim and Karen really felt about each other because their characters showed no real emotion towards the romance. You can't tell if they are really in love or just out to get one over on each other.

Hendstridge's Karen seemed to be only after sex which was totally unrealistic for any police woman who seemed to only want to nail these thieves in the first place. She does however nail Slim in the steamroom (no pun intended ) in the most pitiful wannabe sex scene I have ever seen. At this point I was wondering if she was a cop or prostitute. Her actions made no sense and were disrespectful to the character's true motive. The film's writer should have ditched the romance between Slim and Karen because it didn't lead to anything. ESPECIALLY when Slim already had a girlfriend. Slim and Karen falling for each other even just for sex was way too unbelievable to me. Also I couldn't buy anyone in Slim's crew as smart I am sorry. I mean Slim is supposed to be a mastermind at robbing places yet he can't figure out that Karen is a cop on his tail even though she pops up everywhere he goes? Films need to stop dumbing down the men and adding more suspense! Dorff did okay but the fact is that you didn't know what the heck these characters were really like! The film gave no background information to go on at all about the people. It just started and ended about as fast as it began, leaving the audience as clueless as when the movie started.

The dialogue was laughable at times. When Karen's sexist superior says, " You're a determined little vixen aren't you? " I was like, " What? " This didn't even fit and was one of MANY dumb and embarrassing dialogue moves. Karen wasn't realistic as a police woman at all. What policewoman sleeps with the crook she's investigating AND puts up with the slimy remarks of some Lieutenant? On one hand Karen acted like she was so tough yet she let the men in this film run all over her. I would have enjoyed a tougher and more realistic detective. Natasha was good in the role but the writing messed up her ability to do anything to bring Karen out. Plus they only showed Karen about six times in the film! And Natasha is supposed to be one of the lead stars?!!!!

I think we all agree that the length was the worst about this film. I mean, 84 minutes? You couldn't think of anything else to add in here? They should have focused on better relationships and let us get to know the characters without all the hoopla they threw in for kicks.

Okay it may look like I am blasting this film but I am not. It's OKAY especially for Stephen Dorff. Maybe Steal is his way to making decent movies again. He's had a hard four or five years but Steal was ten times better than any film he's made since 2000.

If you like people chasing after each other in the same old hyped up heist plot with some other cliche' elements(that I won't mention so that I don't spoil it for folks who haven't seen it yet) then you will love this. But I wouldn't pay the regular price for it. I got it for $5.00 in Amazon's used section. If I had paid the regular price I would have been sitting with my head in the toilet right now. Steal is worth at least one look if you can overlook it's many flaws or if you're completely obsessed with Stephen Dorff like me.

3 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD ACTION MOVIE!!.......2006-07-18

I'M NOT MUCH ON ACTION FILMS, BUT THIS ONE WAS PRETTY GOOD!!
THE PLOT WAS COOL AND THE ACTING WAS PRETTY GENERIC...BUT THE MOVIE IS NOT TOO BAD!!
THIS WAS AN OKAY ACTION MOVIE WITH A PREMISE THAT COULD BE A REALY 'GREAT' MOVIE WITH A BIGGER BUDGET AND BETTER ACTORS!!

4 out of 5 stars 'steal' me.......2006-03-22

i thought 'steal' was a good movie. one of stephen dorff's best.of course, being a BIG dorff fan,i love him in ALMOST everything i've seen him in.Stephen Dorff can STEAL me any time !!!!

3 out of 5 stars Lights..Camera...Some Action!!.......2005-05-15

This movie had some high hopes for me...it was good, but not great. The film opens with action right from the get go, so you think you are in for a real treat!! Dialogue between the actors in this film is pretty good, chemistry is definately there between all three main characters. Problem is...yes it is a movie, but some of the action sequences are very unbelievable!!
Good shoot-em' up kind of movie, but if you are looking for better substance and more believablity, look to Assault on Precicnt 13...

3 out of 5 stars Stephen Dorff in This 'XXX' Type Action: Slight But Amusing.......2005-02-08

Not a great action, but still slick and entertaining in its own way enough, the titles 'Steal' (aka 'Riders') tell you all. It's about the charming (so they think) young boys and girls who steal, or rob, and who can ride, or do some extreme sports while running away. Picture to yourself 'XXX' without Vin and Samuel, and you will get a close image of this French film shot in Montreal, Canada.

The stars are, Stephen Dorff (as the leader of the thieves), Natasha Henstridge (as the detective who fell for him), Bruce Payne (as the boss in the police force), Steven Berkoff with a terrible wig, who plays the role of 'Surtayne,' a preacher in a small chapel who is actually a greedy crook. That means, he is doing it again, I mean, very ridiculously hammy performance. You either leave it, or enjoy it. And the director Gerard Pires is from France, the one behind the camera of the original 'TAXI,' a huge hit in France, which spawned two sequels and a Hollywood remake.

The plot is non-existent like 'XXX.' Well, that's about the four young thieves led by Dorff who is so charming that during the bank robbery the girls can look at him adoringly even at gunpoint. And when they run away form the police, they don't run -- they roller skate in the street, like ninjas.

But someone knows their identity, and that someone starts to threaten them. To make things more complicated, another guy knows the truths, too, so the young nice-looking leader Slim (it's Dorff's character) and his friends have to think of the way to get out of the difficulty.

MY ADVICE: Don't think while watching. The dialogues are often silly, the situations impossible. Acting? Forget about it. All I can say about the film is it's far, far better than watching 'Fear Dot Com' or 'SFW,' both of which did great harm to Stephen Dorff's career. And as to Ms. Henstrige, who is as beautiful as ever, and Payne as typecast as ever, you can easily imagine what they would do in this film. In short, nothing new.

THE BEST PART is its stunts. As in the original Frnech 'TAXI,' the director gives us well-choreographed action scenes with stylish photography. It's certainly a rare thing for us to watch a huge truck keep on running completely lopsided to the right. Kudos to the first-rate stunt crew.

'Steal' (or 'Riders') is exactly the film you enjoy watching, drinking beer and eating popcorn. You will spend the amusing 85 minutes, and that's all. But that's not a bad experience after all.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Game.......2005-01-22

Also known as WICKED GAME, it is flat-out amazing that EXTREME HEIST, starring former "Power Ranger" Johnny Yong Bosch, has only been released direct to video. Sure, the picture quality could defintely have been better, but the movie has so much action and humor, it's almost impossible to hold that against it.

From the first thirty seconds, we get our first martial arts fight, and the action, which is reminiscent of Jackie Chan old school flicks, only gets better as it goes.

That's all that I need to say in this review. Trust me, EXTREME HEIST speaks, and kicks, for itself.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2004-02-15

Alright lets be honest.. This movie sucks. The only people who i think would honestly enjoy this movie, is fans of power rangers. the movie is completely power ranger related... 3 characters from the show appear in it... the director and producer worked on power rangers... the stunts are very simular... and i dont know if its just me but all the hench men seem to take falls just like the puddies did on power rangers... hmmmmmmmmm. well anyway besides the complete power rangers crew involved in this movie it does has its moments. who would have known "adam" and "skull" could make such a team? the action of jonny yung bosch is pretty impressive. makes me wonder why he is doing anime voice acting now instead of action shows/movies? jason narvy is just there for comic relief... his counterpart from power rangers, paul schrier (bulk) makes a brief appearance as a bar owner. the video is very bad.. looks like a normal sony cam corder that one could buy at a best buy... o well... if your a fan of power rangers then i can guarentee you'll enjoy this... but if your not a fan of power rangers.. then your prolly in for a big laugh

3 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-04-08

I thought this was an excellent movie, then acting was great, martial arts sequences were awesome and it was a beleivable plot line. Johnny and Jason did a great job, though it was very different from their acting on the PR series, that's probably what they were going for... All in all, 3/5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie, though I'm biased........2002-03-29

Though the picture is a little grainy, and sound is a tad uneven, the movie itself is great! Though, you have to have an appreciation for such things. Loads of violence (all the stunts are real, by the way) and some cussing. Though, the most Johnny Bosch says is "hell," but others say worse. Besides the cool action and tight setting, it's a really s one of those things where you have to pay attention to the entire movie, or else you'll miss something that might come up later on. Not only does it have action and a good plot, there's comedy too. The two thieves (Billy Ray and Guile) have a little trademark that is sort of corny, but it's really cool. Just beware, there are a ton of cliches and corny phrases.

Other than the aforementioned faults (which there are few of), this movie is great for any original Power Rangers' fan or any martial arts fan!! Also for those who like movies about thieves on a mission!!

3 out of 5 stars not as good as it could be.......2002-03-22

this is a really good movie....plot wise anyway. the editing was pretty bad though. some of the shots look they were filmed with a home video camera. there is some dubbing done on speaking parts that is really noticable. other than that, the movie is great. lots of martial arts action and some funny one-liners.

5 out of 5 stars Just because the title is generic doesn't mean the movie is........2005-12-04

Argentina native Hector Echavarria has had his share of roles in martial arts films in the U.S., mainly as some faceless bad guy who gets crushed immediately by the hero (this is the case of his role in CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE.) But having had leads in EXTREME FORCE and LOS BRAVOS, Hector certainly proves he is capable of being in control of an action film.

A student of Tai Chi, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, American Kenpo Karate, Shurin-Ryu Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Jujitsu, the undefeated martial arts champion plays Marcos De Santos, a professional theif who has been betrayed and left for dead by his former comrade in arms Cole (Youssef Qissi) nad Cole's deceptive sidekick Bianca (Nikki Lemke). The Mongolian embassy was the victim of the crime, and, impressed by Marcos fighting skills, nurse him back to health, and offer him a pardon for his actions on the condition that he heavy Kong Li (Michel Qissi) track down Cole and retrieve the priceless Mongolian artifact he has stolen. Marcos agrees, and the chase is on.

Hector has some of the best kicking ability I have ever seen put on film. He is able to repeatedly deliver multiple spinning kicks and other amazing techniques, including two Van Damme style leaping kicks. Like I said, just because the title is generic doesn't mean the movie is.

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie I have seen in a while.......2007-06-11

After being discharged as a U.S. S.E.A.L., Dan Andersen has to find a new job. We don't really see him at work, but then we find out his son has a disease and Andersen needs like a million dollars to save him. He knows he was screwed over when he was discharged, so he decides to use his S.E.A.L. skills and knowledge to attain the money.

The main problem is, well, there are too many huge problems to go over. I will try to cover them all. The story is beyond horrible. They are constantly introducing characters that look cool, but don't really play a part in the movie. Michael Ironside seems to have shot his footage in a day or so. There is nothing logical happening whatsoever. It doesn't help that Dan Andersen is the worst actor I have EVER seen. And Oliver Gruner is only in the movie for about 3 or 4 minutes. There is a fight scene at the end, and it is seriously only about a minute long. Gruner has huge knives in both hands and is doing some damage to Dan Andersen. Then with no explanation, Gruner drops the knives and tries to fight Andersen hand to hand. Andersen picks him up, they wrestle for a couple seconds, and the fight is over. This is definitely one of the worst movies ever made.

0.5/5

Trailers are by far the best thing about the DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Tong-Po: Back in Action?.......2001-12-31

The energetic Hector Echavarria stars in this low-budget martial arts actioner which surprisingly has a lot going for it. He stars as Marcos De Santos, a Robin Hood style thief who wants to escape his life of crime and spend the rest of his days with his girlfriend. Problems arise when his partners talk him into doing one last job - to steal a priceless Mongolian artifact. Now, anyone with less than a minutes attention span will already guess that this a big con, and our hero De Santos is presumably left for dead. Quickly rescued by the owners of the stolen artifact and nursed back to good health, he is sent to get it back. Buddy-style antics are the order of the day as De Santos is partnered by a Mongolian bodyguard, and between the two of them they kick, punch and fight their way through 90 minutes of redneck beating, coconut crushing and major kickboxery mayhem!

The cast are uniformally good, which is quite a shock for a film of this kind. Echavarria is one to watch, and one wonders what he could do with a bigger budget. Youssef Qissi (who portrays the main villain, and De Santos' nemesis) is great - an evil look and an equally good screen fighter to match. Playboy model Nikki Lemke turns up as the manipulative partner of De Santos, and she too is really good in her role (check out the camera, as it seems to be mesmerised by her never-ending legs!). Director and co-star Michel Qissi (Yeah, bad-movies fans rejoice! It's Tong-Po from the KICKBOXER movies) is great as the Mongolian bodyguard. He deadpans his way through all of his lines - and to his credit, he handles this movie very well behind the camera as well. The action scenes are well choreographed and the film has a sharp professional look that elevates it above many of its direct-to-video peers.

Released in the UK (with an awful cover) under the shabby title EXTREME DRAGON (this review actually refers to that Third Millennium release), the movie bears no widescreen option or any extras to speak of. This is a shame as a short 'making-of' would have helped the package further. Not even a trailer? C'mon, this is DVD isn't it? Not VHS. I cannot speak for this US release, whether it will have any extras or anything to speak of, but for the movie alone - it is worth a looksee. If you are a fan of those old Kickboxer-type movies of the late 80s/early 90s or like your action with a little direct-to-video edge to it, then this could very well be for you.
