5 out of 5 stars MAXIMIUM OVERDRIVE.......2007-05-13

I BOUGHT THIS MOVIE FOR MY KIDS ...THEY LOVE IT WATCH IT ALL THE TIME

5 out of 5 stars Classic Stephan King movie.......2007-03-26

I liked this movie for it's "classic" quality that it delivers in the horror genre. I thought that it was very well done for the 80s and is also a classic of the 80s as well. I had always wanted to see this movie but never got the chance until now. I am very glad that I did and I also added it to my horror collections as well. I highly recommend this movie to anyone that likes the "classic" horror flicks of the 80s.

3 out of 5 stars I love Stephen King-- But the movie does not do his work any justice........2007-03-26

Its almost always better to read the book than to watch a movie especially when it is something written by the master of horror, Stephen King.

This movie is not one of the best representations of Stephen's writing, but it is still good to watch.
3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Thriller/Horror Flick.......2007-02-05

Its a classic horror flick in my mind, i saw it years ago, when i was into the horror scene and it actually carried onto the years where im not so much into it anymore...so i definately give it a 4 star rating.

2 out of 5 stars Pure cheese........2007-01-28

Back in 1986 this probably passed for good entertainment. We were nearing the end of a decade of glorious cheese TV (A-Team anyone?). It was just different back then. I remember seeing this for the first time in 1987 and actually being scared at some of the scenes, but now in 2007 I'm sitting here watching it and I'm extremely disappointed. If you want to hear ACDC just buy the albums. Skip this tripe.

4 out of 5 stars Maximum Over drive.......2007-05-30

If you like Cheesey movies this fits the bill. We bought this movie to go along with our Popcorn and Cheesy "supposed to be scary" movie night at home. We have added this one to "Night of the comet". If you are into that kind of thing, take the time to enjoy these two movies. It Seems that there are only two actors in Maximum OverDrive though that can be considered actors. One is Emlio Estevez and the other is the kid. It's wonderfully campy, while trucks take over the world you begin to wonder who would ever put that weird scary face on the front of a toy delivery truck. The newlyweds are a gas (a young Yardely Smith is wonderfully funny in this film). Enjoy making fun of this movie with a special appearance by Steven King in the beginning and the music of AC/DC to jazz it up a bit.

Culled from the video archive of Germany's popular MusikLaden TV show, this compilation of live performances offers the proverbial something for everyone, from the blue-eyed soul of Hall & Oates to the three-chord thrash of the Ramones. It's an incongruous mix, united only by the chart-rising popularity of each selection, spanning the 1970s and presented, with mixed results, in remastered Dolby 5.1 sound. The hilarious low point is Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show's drunken, unruly romp through "The Cover of the Rolling Stone." And while you're trying to reconcile such ethereal hit-makers as Melanie and Bonnie Tyler with more seasoned performers like Van Morrison and Jethro Tull, you can be grateful that these vintage clips, several including extended jams, have been so faithfully preserved. By the time the Ramones fittingly close the disc with "Blitzkrieg Pop," you'll be having a very nice day, indeed. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Have a Pretty Nice Day.......2006-12-30

It's great to see some of these bands with their original members, but the CD certainly has it's flaws. Several instances in which the moderator speaks German, songs are cut off too quickly, some good sound and picture quality, but mostly very mediocre sound and picture quality. Less than 50 minutes long (even though box shows it at over 80 min. long). I'm glad I got it, but not sure if I could recommend it. The Dr. Hook piece was the worst, but most other were worth seeing if you're a fan. A CD that I think only the 60's and early 70's generation can appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Dr.Hook alone is worth a four star........2002-07-16

This DVD contains various artist, and the best of it all is Dr.Hook back when they really were Dr.Hook and the medicine show...

5 out of 5 stars BEST 70's DVD COMPILATION TO DATE!!.......2002-04-15

I contemplated buying the Musikladen/Rockaplast series, but then saw this Super Hits Of The 70's DVD with ALL the best from all the rest on one disc!
... For now this is the ONE to get!
Give them a little time and I'll bet your favorite bands will release the same material on their own DVD release with even more material.......

4 out of 5 stars Far Out!.......2002-01-25

I thoroughly enjoyed this disc! I think what makes these time warps so enjoyable for music fans isn't just the fashions and early video special effects, but the energy it pumps back into many of these songs that have long since become cliche and, let's face it, boring through their saturated presence on "classic rock" radio stations and use in commericials. For instance, I remember when I first heard "Born to be Wild" or "Sunshine of Your Love" (which aren't featured here, by the way) and thinking they were the heaviest things I'd ever heard. Don't get me wrong, they're still great songs, but aren't we a little sick of them? And doesn't being sick of them contribute to these songs losing their edge with the passing of time? I place Badfinger's "Come & Get It" in this same category of unfortunately overused & abused songs. Certainly BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" deserves this classification as well.
But in watching the live performances on this disc, I was reminded again of how fresh, young & energetic this music first was when it originally arrived on the scene. Badfinger, especially, demonstrates pure joy in showing off their crafty arrangement & it's quite a treat to see them pull off the harmonies and everything so precisely. When one considers the tragedy that followed this band, it's somewhat heart wrenching to see how much they so clearly enjoyed themselves and their music.
Another highlight is Alice Cooper, who appears not only to be changing his shirt at the beginning of "Eighteen," but also downing a bottle of booze before taking a seat at the front of the stage. It also seems to take him a little while to remember the lyrics, but his nonsensical ad-libs are practically a celebration of his inebriated condition. No wonder my mother was so scared of this guy! (Marilyn Manson owes Coop a gigantic artistic debt) Alice does finally decide to actually stand up, albeit wobbly, around the sencond verse or so. It's great! The presence of some lesser-knowns (at least to younger audiences anyway) like Dr. Hook, Bonnie Tyler & America provide a good idea of what the entire musicical terrain was like back then (there was a little more range than just Kiss & Led-Zep!). Choosing the Ramones as the closing segment couldn't be any more appropriate in representing the approaching trends of the 80s. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Great music, "classic" performances!.......2001-12-27

OK, I *gotta* write a review of this DVD (my first review!) after reading a couple of them posted earlier. I can't believe that some folks would actually *prefer* lip-synched music videos to real recordings of musicians actually playing their music! So, for those who do appreciate music performance, let me give you my impressions of this DVD and maybe sway you to check it out.

The video and sound quality are very good (apart from a bit of over-psychedelic effects on Free's cut)--great when one considers that they are from the early 70's. And the performances are uniformly very-good-to-excellent. I can't believe anyone would find them "boring" because they aren't simply the familiar album versions. (Is it me or is something backwards here???) BTO doesn't have quite the full energy of their studio cuts, but Tull and the Ramones give nothing up . Dr. Hook's antics are hilarious (with an amazing feedback-assisted 'break' in their song) and even Hall and Oates are quite listenable. In my opinion, Alice Cooper *performing* live is better than any overproduced "music video".

Just about all of the 19 songs are as good as their album counterparts; several sound even better. Watching this eclectic assortment of classic rock artists playing live is simply a real treat for the eyes and ears.

"I'm gonna scare the hell out of you," intones Stephen King in the trailer for his sole directorial effort, the much-maligned Maximum Overdrive. While the end result doesn't live up to that boast, this sci-fi/horror tale isn't as awful as it's been described. King's script (based on his short story "Trucks") focuses on the patrons of a North Carolina truck stop, which comes under attack by a convoy of trucks and other machines animated by Earth's passage through the tail of a "rogue comet." King's fans, tired of half-baked screen adaptations like Cujo and Children of the Corn, expected a horror home run from Maximum Overdrive and instead got an old-fashioned drive-in movie filled with car crashes, cheapjack gore, and fart jokes. Needless to say, they stayed away in droves; the film's failure helped ruin producer Dino De Laurentiis's DEG Films and forced King to sheepishly claim that he had created a modern-day Plan Nine from Outer Space. While the film is torpidly paced and often amateurishly acted, it's no worse than any direct-to-video thriller, and King's ear for dialogue occasionally shines through the gloom. Emilio Estevez and Pat Hingle register as a heroic cook and his black-hearted boss, respectively; the cast includes Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson's voice), Giancarlo Esposito, and Marla Maples (!) as a victim. Anchor Bay's letterboxed print is the R-rated theatrical version; the film was cut extensively after receiving an X rating for violence. The original trailer and a thorough biography on King are also included. --Paul Gaita

3 out of 5 stars Mindless Thrills; Could Have Been Worse, But Definitely Could Have Been Better........2007-01-19

In 1986, I was still a Steven King fan, but those days were coming to a close, and this movie helped me lose interest in King.

Was it because of the quality of the movie as a whole? No. This movie was based on the short story "Trucks" from his collection "Night Shift". Actually, "Trucks" proceeded "Christine" in writing, and "Christine" was actually better as a movie.

This movie, as a lot of Steven King's story, has a scientific explanation for the horror. In this case, the tail of a comet brought machines to life. Yet they had an intelligence that is unexplained. Also unexplained is why it didn't effect the cars of some of the people who ended up at the truck stop.

One person criticized the acting, but I thought the acting was decent. The problem was the scripting; it came across like an amateur screenwriter, who could learn from better writers like the popular horror writer Stephen King . . . Wait! King is that amateur screenwriter! One thing I didn't like was a boy asked about his father. The lead characters were going to lie to him, and the truck stop owner coldly told him the truth. The lead characters acted like the problem was telling the truth, not the manner of telling that truth.

Included was an early cameo of King, but it came across in his first scene that he was looking behind him to make sure the camera was working; it did not seem natural.

The item I really despised was a religious hypocrite in the movie. By that point, I was beginning to see Christian hypocrites were common in his stories. The one here corresponded with a character in the short story, but the religious aspect of the short story character was absent. This was what helped me get over my King fandom, and I hadn't read a novel of his since seeing this movie.

      1 out of 5 stars What a stifferoo!.......2006-11-07

Dreadful - even the actors looked embarrassed. The only part worth seeing was the swearing autoteller. Other directors of dogs like this have the sense to save themselves shame by hiding behind the Alan Smithee psuedonym - what a pity Mr. King didn't. Just awful.

4 out of 5 stars Really good truckin movie.......2006-06-11

Maximum Overdrive is not the greatest horror film to the average movie critic. But if u r like me u will enjoy this. I love it because i am into truck driving for a reason i dont really know, but i am and so i liked the trucking side to this film. so if ur like me and like trucking then u will love this movie but if u are just looking for a good scare from a horror flick this may not be ur best chioce. In my opinion next to Smokey and the bandit it is the best trucking movie ever.

2 out of 5 stars MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE SEEMS STUCK IN REVERSE!.......2005-10-19

Among Stephen King's famous quotes is the one about why he doesn't direct his own films. His answer, not surprisingly, is, "Have you ever seen 'MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE'"? That just about says it all. The film has terrific material to work with, but it is static and very poorly executed. When I watch this film I always think, "Why didn't he do this or that?" and "Why are all the actors just standing around"? Fortunately, King is a better writer than director.

IMPRESSIONS OF A YOUNGER KING FAN:

My teenage daughter has read most of King's novels and agrees with King's assessment of this film. Her favorite film is "Creepshow" which I introduced to her when she was too young and scared her with the famous line, "Where's my cake?" That line still works.

BETTER STEPHEN KING FILMS TO WATCH:

To see better cinematic examples of Stephen King's storywriting, check out "The Shining", "Misery", "Creepshow" or "Carrie". None of these films was directed by King, but each film better represents King's work on the big screen. In "Creepshow" he even stars in one of the sequences "The Death of Jordy Verrill", and he does a respectable job of interpreting his own work.

      OUT OF FAIRNESS:

There are worse films out there, but Stephen King did not write the novels or screenplays for them. This film, though not a good representation of King's work, is watchable for some and is not terrible. Unlike many of King's other films, this cannot be classified as good, however.

      Children of the Corn
The murder rate is as high as an elephant's eye in this flaccid adaptation of Stephen King's short story. While driving through Nebraska en route to a new job, medico Burt (Peter Horton) and his wife Vicky (a pre-Terminator Linda Hamilton) nearly run over a mutilated boy who staggers from the cornfields. Seeking help, they enter the town of Gatlin, whose under-20 residents have butchered their parents per the decree of junior-grade holy roller Isaac (John Franklin), who preaches the word of a being called "He Who Walks Behind the Rows." King's original story (from his 1978 collection Night Shift) was a lean and brutal mélange of Southern-gothic atmosphere and E.C. Comics-style gore, which scripter Greg Goldsmith effectively neutralizes by adding a youthful narrator (a grating Robbie Kiger) and putting an upbeat spin on the story's morbid conclusion. Fritz Kiersch's direction is TV-movie flat, with the sole inspired moment (hideous religious iconography glimpsed during a bloody "service") delivered as a throwaway. Aside from Horton and Courtney Gains (as Isaac's hatchet man Malachai), the performances are dreadful, and the depiction of the Lovecraftian monster-god as a sort of giant gopher inspires more laughter than terror. Amazingly, the film spawned six sequels; Franklin (Cousin Itt in the Addams Family films) later appeared in and wrote 1999's Children of the Corn 666. --Paul Gaita

      Creepshow 2
What is it about hitchhikers that makes them such a sure-fire bet for horror? This question is addressed in the final segment of Creepshow 2, another Stephen King-George Romero collaboration. "The Hitchhiker" is the simplest and best of the three tales on display here, with Lois Chiles as a cheating wife who just can't seem to get rid of a hitchhiker... no matter how hard she tries. The collection gets off to a slow start with "Old Chief Wood'n Head," a sleepy story of Native American justice. "The Raft" is a passable teens-in-peril number, but it worked better on the page than on screen. Romero adapted the King stories but emphatically did not direct, which accounts for the drop-off from the kicky fun of the first Creepshow. King appears as a dimwitted truck driver--a foreshadowing of Maximum Overdrive? In any case, this one's for diehard fans only. --Robert Horton

I bought this movie for creepshow 2, but when i watched that i was a bit dissapointed, but it was still way good! but when i watched the other two i was suprised how good they where! maximum overdrive was funny as hell and children of the corn was scary as hell! and creepshow 2 was ok! if you love horror and stephen king, then buy this box set! it is definatly worth you money!

5 out of 5 stars King is long winded and these movies rock.......2003-05-08

I noticed people on here are giving these movies bad reviews because they say these are not up to kings books. well king is long winded, and reading one of his books can just about be a waist of time. "IT" was over 3000 pages, or was it 4000, cannot remember, but it was ridiculous. Horror was never meant to be boring! Maximum Overdrive is definitely a dated movie (smells of the 80's) but it was funny and bloody, and had a great sound track, lots of action!! SO did creep show, and children. I noticed the other reviewers also mentioned liking king movies I would consider being slow. I donýt think they like gore, they want a bunch of story line. Bring on the action baby. BTW - I love king, donýt get me wrong, and feel free to read his books, I have read some myself. I'm just saying I'd rather see the movies. Oh and for the record, to everyone who bad mouthed maximum overdrive: i could be way mistaken, but I think mr. King had the most involvement in the making of that movie then he did with any of the others. All his other movies (especially now days) are wrote by other people, and are their interpretations of his work, not his own.
      ...

2 out of 5 stars Scraping the bottom of the barrel for horror fans........2003-04-19

Stephen King book to film adaptions are a bit like picking through a barrel of apples: some are good (Misery, The Shining, and Dolores Claiborne), and some are not so good (Pet Sematary, It, and The Stand). This collection leans more towards the latter with 3 mediocre-at-best movies with few frills.

Two of the movies included here are beyond abysmal, "Creepshow 2" and "Maximum Overdrive". "Creepshow 2" contains none of the wit, stlye, or camp of the original movie. All it gives us is [weak] storytelling, lousy acting, and few points of interest. "Maximum Overdrive" fairs somewhat worse, with machines coming to life and killing people. More inexplicable is the fact that Stephen King directed this movie, and did it with seemengly no attention to style or cohesive storytelling. These two movies are pretty much the bottom of the barrel for Stephen King enthusiasts.

The only redeeming feature of this collection is the campy "Children of the Corn", which is by no measure an excellent movie, but it has it's moments. When I was yonger, this movie was a favorite. I would watch it once in a while for camp value, but nothing more.

The fact that this DVD collection is a bargain-bin filler probably explains why there are no extras, outside of the trailers included on a few of the discs. Fans hoping for a more complete retrospective of King's movies will be sorely disappointed by the lack of extras, if they are not already let down by the movies themselves. Overall, there is little to recommend this set on. Save your money.

      3 out of 5 stars OK collection.......2003-04-11

well, i got this set about 2 weeks ago in the store. i hadnt watched creepshow or children of the corn in awhile so i figured i would get it. the creepshow dvd is pretty cool and is worth the money and the children of the corn isnt a great movie but its a classic and is one of those movies that isnt really scary but theres somthing about it that just makes it unique and a classic. the only scary part in that movie is when the people in the diner get posioned and another part from the diner im not gona say here in case you havnt seen it yet but the last dvd (( maximum overdrive)) .... the machines and trucks go haywire and attack the people by some unknown unseen force or somthing. the concept is good and the story but the acting and the movie is .... if your a hardcore stephen king fan get this collection or just get the 8 dvd collection from stephen king or buy only one disc, id skip this if your not really a huge stephen king fan but its a ok compilation.
