Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra star in this visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death. Neurologist Chris and artist Annie had the perfect life until they lost their children in an auto accident; they're just starting to recover when Chris meets an untimely death himself. He's met by a messenger named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and taken to his own personal afterlife--a freshly drawn world reminiscent of Annie's own artwork, still dripping and wet with paint. Meanwhile a depressed Annie takes her own life, compelling Chris to traverse heaven and hell to save Annie from an eternity of despair.

The multitextured visuals seem to have been created from a lost fairy tale. Heaven recalls the landscape paintings of Thomas Cole and Renaissance architecture complete with floating cherubs, while hell is a massive shipwreck, an upside-down cathedral overgrown with thorns and a sea of groaning faces popping out of the ground (one of those faces is German director Werner Herzog). Williams is the perfect actor to play against the imaginative computer-generated imagery--he himself is a human special effect. But the lack of chemistry between Williams and Sciorra is painfully apparent, and the flashback plot structure flattens the story's impact despite its deeply felt examinations of the heart and the spirit. Still, there's no denying Eugenio Zanetti's triumphant production design and the Oscar-winning special effects, which create a fully formed universe that is at once beautiful, eerie, and a unique example of movie magic. --Shannon Gee

1 out of 5 stars flat, unoriginal, and over-done.......2007-06-13

This is pretty bad: a guy dies and lives on in some bizarre afterworld, where he rights certain wrongs and gets an idiotically sentimental philosophical perspective on his life and love. Then, of course, he takes a dare and changes the destiny of his great love, etc.

The film totally failed to sweep me into some believable fastasy, but just came off as pretentious and emotionally flaccid. It is a total bore and there is nothing new whatsoever.

It seems that this is not a general opinion, given the other reviews, but this is how I saw iy and I cannot change that if I want to be honest. Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Films ever made!.......2007-06-04

This film opens the mind and heart to explore life after death and the very meaning of love. It is totally out of the box and is like nothing else that has been done about life after death. The messages are there and so is the love. This is a film that should be seen at least once - perhaps, several times. It has some worthy issues to think about and may be an enlightening resource to some people.

Robin Williams is at his best with a great script and wonderful and inspiring filming!

Perhaps if The Bishop's Wife had lapsed on its copyright and fallen into the public domain like It's a Wonderful Life, it would be as much a Christmas staple as that classic. It certainly deserves to be. Dudley (Cary Grant) is an angel sent down by the prayers of a new bishop (David Niven). The bishop is trying to build a new cathedral, and he's so entrenched in his fundraising that he's watching his own marriage crumble around him. Loretta Young is devoted, moist-eyed, and basically a great date for the tempted Dudley. They drink in the afternoon, go skating at night, and make impulse buys. The skating sequence beats mightily on one's suspension of disbelief, but the rest of the film is an absolute joy. Grant is suave, worldly, and enchanting. A wonderful present for anyone who has not seen it. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars The Bishop's Wife.......2007-06-25

Nominated for Best Film at the 1947 Oscars, Henry Koster's sweet, thoroughly charming "Bishop's Wife" was a big crowd-pleaser in its day, and has since become one of our more cherished holiday films. Cary Grant was never smoother playing Dudley, the most debonair of angels. Co-starring David Niven and a dazzling Loretta Young as the title character, this joyful, witty film still has something to say about keeping the spirit of Christmas alive all year round.

5 out of 5 stars Touched by an Angel - A Heart Warming Story .......2007-06-05

If you are looking for a movie to watch on Christmas day with your family, you must include this heart warming story about an angel who intervene the busy lives of an Episcopalian bishop named Henry Brougham (David Niven) and his wife Julia (Loretta Young). This movie is set in Yuletide spirit with bells ringing, choir singing, Christmas wreaths decorating the walls of churches, homes, shops and buildings, and streets and neighborhoods covered with fresh snow. During this time, an angel named Dudley (Cary Grant) enters the lives of the bishop and his wife as an office assistant. At the Victorian home of Bishop Henry not everything is going well. Years of neglect about his own family left Julia on her own while the bishop is busy raising funds for a new cathedral. Dudley's attentiveness, charm, and sheer magical powers drive Julia to him, but Dudley is only interested in helping Henry to get back with Julia. The writers have cleverly crafted many moments between Dudley and Julia that would be purely romantic, but writers did not forget to remind us that Dudley is an angel and he is not romancing Julia. Several instances of walking down the street, driving in the country and having lunch at local cafeteria makes her feel that she is appreciated as a woman. The magical ice-skating scene where Dudley charms everyone with his skating ability, and helps Julia to glide on ice is a memorable scene of the movie.

Dudley's "angelic" effect is felt by many: He touches the lives of people he comes in contact with. As the friendship between Julia and Dudley becomes strong, Henry begins to feel that Dudley is a devil trying to steal his wife, but soon all ends well when Dudley completes his job by helping Henry to raise money for the cathedral. Cary Grant is spectacular and charms not only Julia but many viewers. I was most impressed by the performance of Julia who is attracted to Dudley; she is tender, romantic, and vulnerable, yet she also knows that she is a wife and a mother.

This was light romantic comedy in the mid-80's that is a hidden gem. Imagine having to teach someone how to be cool and win over girls and the pearly gates open? That is one divine assignment that seems really hard for some and a piece of cake for others. The Heavenly Kid is one to watch when you want a movie you don't have to think too much about.

A prime candidate for cult status (it even spawned a sequel), this apocalyptic 1995 horror flick belongs in the darker corners of the comedy-horror sub-genre that includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mimic, and Phantoms--and like those movies it's a mixed blessing with some highlights worth savoring.

This one's got Christopher Walken in its favor, starring as the Angel Gabriel, who's really mad at God for allowing humans into heaven (because, you see, humans have souls and angels don't, and God plays favorites). Gabriel takes his anger out on the human race, coming to Earth to capture the soul of the most evil human alive in an effort to defeat the "good" angels that remain in God's good graces. One of the good angels is played by Eric Stoltz, who captures the evil soul before Walken does and transfers it into the body of a little girl. Are you with us so far? Don't worry if you're not, because writer-director Gregory Widen filled The Prophecy with so many wild ideas that he didn't bother to connect them to a coherent plot.

Add Viggo Mortensen as the devil and Elias Koteas as a priest-turned detective who's tracking Walken and it's clear that Widen was attempting something ambitious here. He nearly succeeded, since The Prophecy jumpstarts its heaven-and-hell rivalry with enough action, humor, and intelligence to make the movie sufficiently entertaining. It was enjoyable enough to entice Walken back for the sequel, so if you're into this kind of thing, this one's a keeper. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a Theological War Film.......2007-06-10

Horror? Bah, I say. It asks the question "Why does God love us the most, and why doesn't he love the angels as much?" Of course, you don't really get an answer, because who can really know the mind of God? Christopher Walken is fabulous (this actually might be his iconic role, once we look back on everything). Well worth the time and the thought. Highest rating.

5 out of 5 stars Check Your Haloes At The Door..........2007-05-24

Christopher Walken (The Dead Zone, Sleepy Hollow, Pulp Fiction) is the angel Gabriel, here on earth in mortal form, in order to find and acquire the darkest soul to ever live. Walken is his usual mixture of good / evil / funny / scary. He plays Gabe like a cool hitman w/ angelic abilities. Virginia Madsen (Candyman) is believable in her schoolteacher role, as is Elias Koteas as the ex-priest turned cop, Tom Dagget. We even get Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction, The Fly 2) as the angel Simon, and Adam Goldberg (Saving Private Ryan) as Gabriel's human slave! Even Amanda Plummer (another Pulp Fiction alum) pops up as a servant for Gabriel's use! If that's not enough, we even have Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn himself) as satan! All of these folks combine to make THE PROPHECY a classic! The little girl, Mary (Moriah Silver Dove Snyder) is convincingly innocent, and NOT a whiny brat or a trash-talking smarta$$, breaking w/ the usual hollywood idea of childhood as a time for being utterly annoying! How refreshing! Spiritual themes like God, heaven, hell, angels, immortality, souls, etc. are treated w/ respect and dignity, while keeping things exciting, frightening, and mysterious. I don't think I've seen a movie do that since THE EXORCIST and THE OMEN back in the 70s! Highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars witty, intriguing.......2007-01-19

Christopher Walkin was made to play Gabriel. He has some great dialogue to work with. The plot is riveting. Viggo was amazing as Satan.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, transfer not so good.......2006-11-26

I won't go into the movie's worth as entertainment here - suffice to say that I think it's awesome and well worth 5 stars. But in this review I'm focusing on the technical aspects which I feel detract from the DVD.

This DVD (ASIN: 6305268819) features a transfer that is known as 'matted widescreen' which works fine on smaller 4:3 TVs, but which looks awful on larger screen or widescreen TVs. I believe that every DVD today should be made in 'anamorphic widescreen' format so that the image is enhanced for viewing on a larger screen. If it's not then I think that the low image quality should be clearly marked in some way, as the lack of an anamorphic transfer makes a big difference in quality. In the case of this particular movie the image is very poor mostly due to the matted widescreen format that results in what's known as 'gutterboxing' (black bars all around the image) when the movie is played on widescreen TVs. Some TVs allow zooming in to fill the screen in cases like this, but then the image becomes very grainy - so much so that it's probably better to watch it in the 'gutterboxed' mode.

So in conclusion, those with the older standard 4:3 TVs under 30 inches probably won't notice any loss of resolution. But for folks like me with big screen TVs I advise waiting until this movie gets an updated DVD treatment. Alternatively, if you own a DVD player that can play region 2 discs, the British version (ASIN: B000069JE7 available from Amazon.co.uk) is an anamorphic transfer.

4 out of 5 stars Gabriel played by Walken is priceless, Viggo Mortensen as the Devil, wow.......2006-11-11

The movie in itself is lacking or rather the story is cheesy. So setting that aside it is, however creative and amusing, a must own. Its about the never ending war between heaven and hell, angles have come down both fallen and still in service to God to walk the earth hunting down a recently dead evil soul that Lucifer wants for his side. One angle found it and hid it inside a small girl. An ex priest to be now detective is following this case because of a past connection and chasing down the clues only to be slowed down by Gabriel who wants to start his own war. In turn a deal with the Devil was made.
Its a fun movie, I enjoy watching it over and over again.

Grab an econo-pack of tissues, gather your loved ones around a cozy television, and bring on the hot cocoa--it's time for a dose of Christmas spirit. The tender and charming Mary Steenburgen (Parenthood) dons a sour disposition in her role as Ginny Grainger, a woman who finds little joy in life lately--let alone in the impending holiday season. Money is tight, her husband (beautifully downplayed by nice-guy Gary Basaraba) lost his job, and the family must move out of their house. Ginny cannot even bring herself to say, "Merry Christmas," despite her family's enthusiasm about the big day. With help from Ginny's brave and loving daughter (sweetly performed by Elisabeth Harnois) and a Christmas angel named Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny undergoes a life-altering experience à la It's a Wonderful Life. The result? Happy endings, hugs and kisses, pass the tissues.

Not a light holiday entertainer by any means, the plot verges on depressing at times, as the family struggles through money issues and the tedium of daily suburban survival. While handled fairly subtly, some of the bridging story--including a shooting, a kidnapping, and a drowning--might prove disturbing to children under 6 years old. And really: if the somber Harry Dean Stanton (Paris, Texas) repeatedly appeared in your neighborhood, cloaked in a cowboy hat and overcoat, would you allow your kids outside? Still, a well-made favorite to cherish. --Liane Thomas

    Description

Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen (TV's JOAN OF ARCADIA, HOPE SPRINGS) gives a solid performance as Ginny Grainger, a young mother who rediscovers the joy and beauty of Christmas, thanks to the unshakable faith of her six-year-old daughter Abbie (Elizabeth Harnois) and Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny's very own guardian angel. Ginny's wondrous experience will touch your heart and warm your soul in the timeless tradition of past Disney favorites. ONE MAGIC CHRISTMAS fulfills all your most treasured Christmas fantasies. Share it with those you love.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Christmas!!!.......2007-06-08

This is a touching, wonderful Christmas movie. It does not have any of the cynicism that is in most of the Christmas movies of late.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas is the importance of family.......2007-02-13

I absolutely love this movie. The main character (Mary Steenbergen) is a bah-humbug scrooge working mother, who does not appreciate the blessings she has in life (health and family). She hates Christmas and all of the expense that goes with it. She has two lovely children and an adoring husband who spends his spare time - get this - refurbishing bicycles to give to poor children (now THAT'S my idea of a real man)! An angel helps teach her the HARD WAY, to see that her glass is half full, not half empty. Keep a BIG box of kleenex handy. And it is not necessarily a chick flick - my husband loves this movie, also!

5 out of 5 stars One Magic Christmas Review.......2007-01-31

One of the "must see" Christmas movies. A family oriented movie that will rekindle the Christmas spirit in everyone. We have this on VCR tape and have watched it so much that we purchased the DVD version. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Difficult to fine anywhere else.......2007-01-23

My wife and I saw this movie on TV several years ago. I had a very poor VHS Tape of it. It is rarely shown during the Christmas time on TV any more. I bought this for my wife. She was so pleased. The only problem I had was that I turned up the volume all the way up and was still unable hear much of the dialog. Had to use close caption.

4 out of 5 stars Life is what your make of it.......2007-01-21

This movie does a good job of portraying how much impact our view of life has on our happiness, and of those around us.

Kermit takes center stage in this hilarious, parody-laden celebration of Muppetry, pulsating with original music, a star-studded cast of human cameos, and a heartwarming story reminiscent of It's a Wonderful Life. Joan Cusack plays the deliciously villainous Miss Bitterman, a ruthless banker who succeeds in foreclosing on the Muppet Theatre only days before Kermit's Christmas extravaganza. As Kermit loses his livelihood, he plunges into the "I wish I'd never been born" mind-set instantly recognizable to George Bailey fans. It's going to take some Divine intervention (Whoopi Goldberg is cast as God, no less), plus a little help from a heavenly "Clarence." Despite some moments where the script seems adrift (how hard it must be to live up to the irresistible precedent set by the 1979 premier Muppet Movie) and some humor that borders on risqué, Fozzie and the gang are in fine form. The message is sweet: dreams are as vital to life as loyal friendships are to see them through. (Ages 5 and older) --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars Worst muppet movie ever.......2007-06-10

I would give it 0 stars if possible. The acting was horrible--either the actors didn't act that well or overacted. It was choppy and very unfunny in most parts. And I think the story was just too dark for a muppets movie, especially as it was targeted for kids. I just have to say, though, that in one review, someone said that Miss Piggy was a phone-sex call girl. Well, she wasn't. There was one scene that set you up to think that she was, but when she did answer the phone, she was pretending to be a psychic and wore a big wig to get more into her role. I still strongly dislike this movie, but I just wanted the facts straight.

    5 out of 5 stars DVD customer.......2007-01-19

My DVD came very quickly and was exactly what I had ordered. I am very pleased.

    2 out of 5 stars Sadly frustrating.......2006-12-31

We were excited to have a new Muppet movie to add to the family collection but 15 minutes into it---even the family Muppet expert was saying, "Wow, this is really bad..." Of course it is to be expected that the characters will change over time, with the passing or retirement of the classic puppeteers, but our disappointment and frustration came from the peculiar writing that seemed so uncharacteristic for our dear Muppets. The sexual comments, jokes and implications were too much for us---and we had no young children in the room.

It felt as though the writers had no idea of who the Muppet characters have been---all these years and so wrote for characters that were completely foreign. We found it sadly tacky, humorless and in some places even ugly. In fact, the best parts were in the bloopers---particularly the wrestling match between Statler & Waldorf---where it seemed that the truer Muppet personalities came through.

4 out of 5 stars Great for those who grew up on the Muppets.......2006-11-27

I was a child when the muppet show was still new every week. My family watched every episode together. Now, over 20 years later, I understand why my parents enjoyed the show as much as I did. There were many adult and topical jokes / skits in the orignal Muppet Show (and the first Muppet Movie). I find this christmas special in many ways an excellent tribute to those (hilarious yet occasionally bawdy) days. Of course, with Jim Henson's son taking over for him, some elements will never be the same. Modern references to pop culture (like Mission Impossible and Kelly Ripa) may eventually make this movie too dated after another decade or so - but that was true with the orignal muppet show as well - and perhaps these modern references will allow your children to view the muppets as the "cool" icons my generation saw.

    1 out of 5 stars Not what I'd expected.......2006-10-19

Every Christmas my family watches "Muppet Family Christmas" and "The Muppet's Christmas Carol," so I was looking forward to another Muppet Christmas movie. But I was really disappointed in this one. First of all, for those who dismiss all the inuendos saying that they'll just go over the kid's heads; kids aren't a naive anymore as alot of people would like to think. I work with alot of kids and know that they may not catch all of them, but most would get several. But even if they don't get them, why put them in a family movie in the first place?
Then, I know that the alternate world where Kermit had never been born was supposed to be worse off, but in places it just went too far. Like when Fozzie was a pickpocket, that was ok,(they even got a halfway decent joke out of it.) But seeing Scooter as a cage dancer, that just creeped me out.
And the ending; I'm not going to tell you what it is, but I will let you know that it's one that's unoriginal, and extremely overused.

The hardworking Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball star in the urbane and witty Forever Darling, a 1956 romantic comedy, made at the height of the couple's popularity as co-stars of I Love Lucy, about the difficulty of forging marital harmony. Arnaz plays unpretentious, visionary chemist Lorenzo "Larry" Vega, whose passion for working on a powerful chemical insecticide for the benefit of humankind means little to his wife, Susan (Ball). A creature of high society, Susan is conflicted about her destiny. Should she be concerned with acquiring a bigger house and socializing with the right people, or should she follow Larry as he takes his insecticide on a two-year field study in tropical jungles? Attempting to guide her toward the right decision is a dapper, guardian angel, who happens to take the form of James Mason because Mason is Susan's fantasy man. The script by Helen Deutsch (I'll Cry Tomorrow) indulges I Love Lucy fans with plenty of slapstick set pieces plugged into an extended camping scene. But there's also some flashy banter--Arnaz is very convincing putting well-heeled snobs in their place--and a very clever sequence in which Susan imagines herself as the heroine in a movie she happens to be watching. (A movie starring, yes, James Mason.) There's a fun, special feature in which Arnaz and Ball take time out from production on their television show to plug Forever Darling and reveal the secret of a truly happy marriage--and then get into a beef. --Tom Keogh

    Description

A lot of things can test a marriage, but Lorenzo and Susan Vega have unwittingly put their five-year union to the ultimate test: they go camping. And Susan's guardian angel, seen only by Susan, joins them. TV's I Love Lucy was in its fifth season when this romp gave fans more reasons to love its stars. Desi Arnaz plays Lorenzo, who heads for wide-open spaces to test his chemical company's new product. Wife Susan (Lucille Ball) goes, too. And soon we're all headed for comedy chaos built on tent-raising, forest critters, inflatable rafts and other typical elements of roughing it. There's one atypical element: the angel (James Mason) who wants to rescue their troubled union. Marriages may be made in heaven. But the details are worked out here below

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for Lucille Ball............2007-05-07

Pretty good movie, and funny, but not as funny as some movies (like, the Long, Long Trailer). I thought Lucy acted confused, and not at all like the comedienne we all know and love. However, this is good clean fun, and seeing Desi as a scientist was great fun. Very funny at the end too!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2006-10-29

I'm not trying to be biased or anything, as I'm a truly die-hard Lucille and Desi fan, but I thought the show was really great. It was, at the same time, romantic and innocent. I loved it. I thought it also very interesting, as the movie actually reflected Lucille and Desi's relationship in real life. For those who gave the show only one or two stars, were you actually paying attention to what they were saying? Because you have to do that in order to enjoy the movie.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful,innocent movie.......2006-03-28

This movie always makes me smile.Such nostalgia with the technicolor, shiny cars, women in dresses and men in suits.Lucy is one of my favorite comedians and she does a great job.I've never been a fan of Desi(sorry)but James Mason is absolutely dreamy.Forever Darling is bottom line just a fun movie to watch.

    1 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR LUCY/DESI DIEHARDS!.......2006-02-23

This is a terrible movie. When it came out in 1956 it was a box office bomb even though both stars were at the height of their powers. Time had only added to it's mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF A WONDERFUL PAIR OF MOVIES.......2005-06-27

I have seen both Forever, Darling and The Long, Long Trailer (in that order) and would be hard-pressed to say which one I liked most. I love the title song sung by the Ames Brothers, but to hear Desi sing it in Spanish was a delight. Other reviewers have mentioned James Mason (I loved him as Dr. Watson in Murder By Decree) but don't forget the actress who played Thurston Powell III's wife on Gilligan's Island, Natalie Schafer, playing Susan's high-society mother!! All the comedy scenes will leave you breathless (I loved it her slave-and-master routine when she and her husband's first jaunt in the rowboat ended (with her rowing) but don't lose sight of the reason for the trip. It was because their marriage was on the rocks that Susan went with her husband in hopes of fixing things between them, and it was in the end, when she told her husband it was time she started going in his direction rather than her own, that my tears came. It would have been glorious if more movies by this superb team had followed.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-01-11

Excellent DVD. Perfect for the 8-12 year old boy especially although my 12 year old and 4 year old girl also loved it.

Only complaint is that it was too short. A one hour story would be better.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-11-11

This was worth the wait, definitely their best yet. Can't wait for the next one to come out!!!

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME, state-of-the-art CG animation.......2006-09-29

Boy, I tell you, if this is what we can expect from future all-CG animated movies or series, we're in for a treat. This is the best CG animation since Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Each installment of Angel Wars seems to get better in the animation department. The first one was good, this one is great. At times, it doesn't even look like it's CG animated. I'm talking about nearly photo-realistic scenes.

The sound is really good too. It's only DD 2.0 but if you've got a 5-channel stereo setting on your receiver, I highly recommend that setting because it really brings out the bass and even at that, the dialogue is still crystal clear.

If you liked the first two installments, you'll love this one.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding. Another Solid Installment in the Epic Series........2006-09-14

I saw a pre-screening of Episode 3 back in July and this movie looks to be another solid installment in the Angel Wars: Guardian Force series. It picks up shortly after the cliffhanger in episode 2, taking the entire battle-ready team into a dimensional underworld to rescue a fellow angel, retrieve a sacred artifact, and prevent a rapidly transforming demon from crossing over into the human plane.

The CG and overall production quality is once again first-rate, something you'd expect to see in a feature film rather than a values-based children's video. I have no doubts that my three kids, especially my 9-year old boy, will love this newest episode, and I also think that grown-up animation enthusiasts such as myself will also be pleased. The trademark anime-style of action is back with a slew of cool new bad-guys. Once again the heart-pounding action deftly underscores a positive message without getting preachy - that is what I always find so amazing about this series.

Imaginative, original, entertaining and inspiring - this series is outstanding. Hopefully we will not have to wait a whole year for the next installment.

In a show of holiday spirit, they receive visits from two kind-hearted strangers — first a young man, then a young woman. Each has come to return a wallet they believe one of the gentlemen has lost. From this humble beginning, friendships are built, and romance ensues. 1 out of 5 stars Boring!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-10

I realize this is an old movie - but it was very boring - and the ending was not satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiriting classic that time has not eroded.......2006-11-28

This film is timeless in that it both charms and teaches.
Three old men with good hearts look for someone to celebrate Christmas with by throwing 3 wallets containg $[...] each into the street. A bet is made whether or not anyone would be honest enough to return them. Just as time was up and the bet over a young Texan rings the bell and returns the wallet. A few moments later a young woman returns another and the two fall in love. The three elderly gentleman have a tragic death after becoming close friends with the young couple. Their spirits return to their mansion where they set about helping the couple. One by one the elderly specters are called to their eternity until only one remains.
In my estimation no Christmas collection should be found without this warm hearted and sincere masterpiece of cinema.
I gave 5 stars for the movie itself, the dvd is somewhat lacking, without any special features and about half way through the movie, for a few seconds, there was a marked degradation of the transfer but only for a short time.
This is a personal favorite of mine and I hope that it will be to you as well.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, heart-warming film.......2006-04-10

With spring, a young man's fancy turns to love - and so I sought out a romance to watch. Of course, being me, I chose a nontraditional sort of romance, one involving ghostly matchmakers. Since my own love life (or lack thereof) would seem to require some sort of supernatural intervention itself, Beyond Tomorrow seemed like a perfect choice. This 1940 classic is actually a Christmas movie, truth be told, but there's no harm in watching it whenever you like. After all, a failure to keep Christmas in your heart throughout the entire year leaves you vulnerable to nocturnal visits from the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.

Beyond Tomorrow tells a simple but touching story. It all starts with three older gentlemen who share the same house and work together running an engineering firm. Chad (C. Aubrey Smith) and Michael (Charles Winninger) are all business, working late on Christmas Eve, while George (Harry Carey) enjoys Christmas as a jolly Irishman should. When he learns that his invited guests are unable to join him and his friends for Christmas Eve dinner, George forestalls the two old fogeys' idea of heading out to the club by inviting two strangers for dinner. Each of the men sticks ten dollars and his card in a new wallet, pitches it out onto the snowy sidewalk, and waits to see if fate (and an honest heart or two) will bring any good deed doers to their door. Two out of three ain't bad, as a young Texan (Richard Carlson) and a charming young teacher (Jean Parker) end up joining them for dinner. The two young folks quickly fall in love, spending many a happy hour in the company of their three unassuming benefactors over the following few weeks. Even as they make plans for a lifetime together, however, they lose their three good friends in an airplane crash. And so it is that Chad, Michael, and George return home in ghostly form. And it's a good thing they do, as the young lovers soon face some rocky times, as new-found success as a singer and the attentions of another fashionable young lady turn the young Texan's head.

I'm a little surprised this film isn't more widely known, as it really does tell a wonderful story. The love story itself actually pales in comparison to the lives (and deaths) of the three older gentlemen. George's two friends gradually lose their crusty edges by the time their personal calls from heaven come, but it is the warm-hearted George (who, even as a ghost, cares more about the young lovers' happiness than his own eternal rest) that really steals the show and makes this such a should-be Christmas classic. A powerful performance by the wonderful Maria Ouspenskaya adds further emotion to a truly heart-warming story.

    4 out of 5 stars Beyond Christmas.......2006-02-01

I really enjoyed the movie. I thought that it was light, entertaining and shows the true meaning of Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond anything I have ever seen for Christmas.......2006-01-12

I liked most, that this movie was not a typical Christmas plot. Three men whom are stood up by their Christmas guest decide to make a bet. They each take a wallet with a $10.00 bill that were for gifts, and place a business card of their own inside of it. They open the window and through all the wallets out onto what is a typical busy sidewalk during the holiday season. They wanted to see if anyone would find and return the wallets. Then they would invite this person to join in a Christmas Dinner. Two of the wallets returned. One from a young man and the other a young women. It just so happens that both are away from home and family on this holiday season and accept the three mens offer of the Christmas Dinner. The group become great friends and spend all their time together, until a plane crash takes the lives of the 3 gentlemen whom had taken a business journey together. The three men's spirits return to the house where they had always gathered to share a cigar or brandy.
Throughout the movie, one by one the heavens call and a loved one appears to show them the way to heaven. All except one man who fights to stay a little longer to help the young couple through some trying times. He sacrifices what is to be his one chance at going to the heavens above to stay behind and help the ones he loves through some trying times. The rest you have to see for yourself. One thing is sure, when it is my time to go I hope it is just like this movie - just beautiful.
