Amazon.com essential video
When it arrived on the big screen in 1987, Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop was like a high-voltage jolt of electricity, blending satire, thrills, and abundant violence with such energized gusto that audiences couldn't help feeling stunned and amazed. The movie was a huge hit, and has since earned enduring cult status as one of the seminal science fiction films of the 1980s. Followed by two sequels, a TV series, and countless novels and comic books, this original RoboCop is still the best by far, largely due to the audacity and unbridled bloodlust of director Verhoeven. However, the reasons many enjoyed the film are also the reasons some will surely wish to avoid it. Critic Pauline Kael called the movie a dubious example of "gallows pulp," and there's no denying that its view of mankind is bleak, depraved, and graphically violent. In the Detroit of the near future, a policeman (Peter Weller) is brutally gunned down by drug-dealing thugs and left for dead, but he survives (half of him, at least) and is integrated with state-of-the-art technology to become a half-robotic cop of the future, designed to revolutionize law enforcement. As RoboCop holds tight to his last remaining shred of humanity, he relentlessly pursues the criminals who "killed" him. All the while, Verhoeven (from a script by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner) injects this high-intensity tale with wickedly pointed humor and satire aimed at the men and media who cover a city out of control. --Jeff Shannon

Happy anniversary Robo.......2007-06-24
This is totally worth buying esspecially if you don't have the unrated version, not to mention the special features it most likely has.I was lucky enough to find the criterion collection edition which is unrated. However I will still pick this up because of it's extras.
I wouldn't waste my money...........2007-06-24
This is a good movie. But I wouldn't waste my money. MGM has this Unrated version in the ROBOCOP Trilogy that was released in 2004. I advise to pick that up if you can still find it.

Oh Yeah!.......2007-06-01
I was nine years old when my Dad snuck my brother and I into this movie and it changed my life forever...Seeing Murphy's hand blow up all over the floor was so good at that age...A must have...!

Not a timeless classic!.......2007-01-19
Don't get me wrong.I enjoyed watching Robo-Cop.I've seen it more than once, and if I had nothing better to do on a weekday night with friends,I would probably watch it again. That being said;this is not a timeless classic which deserves to be a Criterion Collection Standard. This movie should only last as long as popular, topical entertainment value films inevitably do. There is nothing ground-breaking here, nothing particularly interesting cinemagraphically, just a C+ to B average piece of entertainment. When held against the stature of Verhoeven's 4th Man,(Robert Englund's favorite horror movie),and Soldier of Orange, this film even takes a HUGE step down from entertaining,to a personal embarrassment for Paul!
Part of the Holy Pantheon of 80's Sci Fi.......2007-01-14
This movie is one of those films that so many dismiss as part of that overtly violent stage that Hollywood flirted with throughout the 80's. Terminator (the first one), Aliens, and Predator. And of these, Robocop is close to being the most masterful. Injecting black humor about a crime ridden city run by corporations, and an automaton that finds his humanity again, Robocop is beautifully directed by the still relatively unknown Paul Verhoeven. It may have been his first real footprint onto a North American audience but it is perhaps his most complete film. The script is not particularly clever, nor does it need to be. It whisks the audience through at a deliberate pace and never lets up until the final moments of the film. It's unfortunate that the studios decided to continue the franchise with sequels as this is definately one of those ideas that is best suited as a single film. Highly recommended.
BANG BANG, YOU'RE ALL DEAD. BUT YOU WERE DEAD BEFORE ANYWAY........2006-12-12
In the near future a big money US manufacturing and management services company OmniConsumerProducts is running a city, including its police force, Detroit is due for a makeover, and OCP are set to do it. The criminals and the corporates have got their hands in each others pockets, and its the cops getting creamed out there. Perhaps a droid cop to stand in the breach? Nope, its prototype software is a little buggy yet, shame about the bullet-riddled executive on the 95th floor.
Enter the 21st century solution: part man, part machine, usual titanium-kevlar armour, supergun, etc. The shot-up human wreck of a streetcop got his arms and legs taken off, and now he is mostly head, heart, and guts inside a carapace. Just how human is the thing left? I suppose that is one of the questions you might want to ask yourself if you want to think about this one. And he can deal with a store robber or an entire drugs factory warehouse, all great set pieces. We are now in Frankenstein, Blade Runner, Six Million Dollar Man territory--not sufficiently freakoid for The Matrix or other fully jacked-in stories, but very close to `The Terminal Man' by Michael Crichton, an underrated book (and I think it was a film, but if so it could do with a modern re-make). The soul-lessness of the modern man's postmodern technoblitz ersatz existenz reaches its ultimate conclusion, or is that a nadir of exhaustion? Maybe the director just read too much Sartre and tried to get it out of his head by snorting coke. The OCP company guys are delusionally self-centred like the hoods, just better manners and sharper suits. The cops are hapless grunts. All the human values that make us so touchy-feely are just out of grasp in this city. The women are all believable, and it's not like a non-stop model parade, so he scores good there.
Now the criminals are absolutely believably psychopathic, ugly, and unlovable--but the question still is, do the good guys get our sympathy? Is it any more than a gunfight at the Old Detroit corral? The action is good (altho' very gruesome in places), but are the hapless blue suits so much more attractive than the bandits here? I like to see the perpetrators get lined up, but is the lone manmachine enough to make me want to root for the forces of good, and is his tragic plight enough to touch me? Mmmm.
There are regular good humorous touches throughout, but not enough to lift the whole film. I don't feel that this film bears repeated viewings. (Except perhaps the mindless TV show with the catchline, `I'll buy that for a dollar' that everyone watches.) I cannot put my finger on why, but this is one action film that just does not work on the small screen: bigger is not better, it is the way it has to be. I think when you see this film and don't think about it, your memory plays tricks and re-humanises it with all the stuff that's not in here. Just not. So, either 1) Don't see it. Or, 2) Realise that it says a lot by being so heartless. Cyberpunks of the world goodnite.
Uncut scenes.......2006-11-28
If anyone cares, there are 3 additional scenes in this version. The dude who is shot by the robot at the board meeting-there is a gruesome scene of him falling backwards on a table while being shot with blood spraying everywhere. It's only a few seconds and doesn't add much, but it's a cool scene. The next scene is only about 3 seconds long. During the cop chase, there is a close up of Murphy shooting one of the robbers 2x in the leg. The R version just shows a distant shot of him being hit once. Murpheys death is a bit longer also. You see blood pour out of his lost hand, watch his entire left arm get shot off (not just the hand), and he gets shot at a bit longer. You do feel worse for Murphy after watching this version-especially the scene where blood is pouring from his hand stump. Overall, maybe 20 seconds of cut material. I wouldn't spend extra to see it, but if you get the choice, this is the version to get.
I'd buy that for a dollar!.......2006-10-25
In my opinion, at least with regards to Verhoeven's two other sci-fi favorites of mine -- 'Total Recall' and 'Starship Troopers' -- nobody in Hollywood orchestrates a better action sequence than the guy. Yet, I find 'Robocop''s action scenes a bit on the primitive side, with too many individual, sustained shots that lack the energy and mesmerizing choreography of his awaited work in the future. Adding to this pretty indolent display of action is Basil Poledouris' score, which just doesn't do it for me (and I'm a huge fan of the composer); the theme is heroic and cheesy, and the underlying cues for the film's explosion riddled action are kind of lifeless and unexciting.
But know this! -- I only criticize this aspect of the film because it's so freakin' prominent. Easily I find this to be 'Robocop''s biggest fault; the last half is too thin on story and idea, and way too concerned with sustaining a satisfying amount of action (as it was marketed, of course). There's just too much of it, with no real sense of purpose. And it's disappointing, for sure, because the first half is set up with interesting sci-fi concepts, social commentary, questions of identity, and for a little bit, a dive into an emotional pool which I have yet to see Verhoeven return to in his career. Yet, suddenly the film's thoughtfulness is cut off, never expanding on the material; in place of the substance, we're left with a pretty boring "revenge" motive that determines nearly half the film -- meh. Now that I think about it, this result is probably more representative of all Verhoeven's films than I'd like to admit... so I'm going to stop thinking about it.
Overall, though, the movie's a goodie. From the moment Murphy appears, all the way up to Robocop's initial journey of justice on the mean streets of Jersey, it's brilliant. The scenes in the Security Concept building are especially entertaining, with Miguel Ferrer and Ronny Cox as the ambitious but greed-driven corporate scum, battling for power amongst the whole decaying system. And the montage of Robocop coming to life is just awesomely composed, progressing, in a series of about five disconnected scenes, from Murphy in the hospital to his machine-hybrid birthing (great use of point-of-view, especially). And, though I don't care a great deal for a lot of the action sequences, by and large the film has beautiful cinematography with a great use of lighting and, to me, feels fresh and undated (again... by and large; surely I wouldn't say such a thing in the face of the dance club scene.. heh). A lot of it (first half primarily) also feels very raw and distinctly European, which I think Verhoeven, with time, sort of lost a grip on (the Euro feel, which I'm guessing he studied and admired, coming from that side of the world -- but I'm no film connoisseur). So, in summary to my inability to write without graceful transition between sentences (!), the film is really technically stellar in many respects, and as much as I find myself apathetic about the action scenes overall, I still admire so much filmically, whenever I happen to watch the movie.
It's interesting to meditate on what in the world made 'Robocop' so popular; the only thing I can hypothesize is on the basic level of guns and gore (especially since it was made, and is remembered within that Schwarzenegger/Stallone era). For sure it's vaguely seen as an action classic by the collective, but I think too the idea of a 'Robo'cop is just too titillating, even on the most unelaborated level, especially when the visual design and execution of the man-machine is so exquisitely done, as is the case here. And I'm thinking right now that what I just wrote probably seems lopsided and all over the place, so I'm going to try to summarize quickly why I give the film four stars: half of it is great; half of it is good. It's scholarly in many senses, and for anyone who derives joy out of film technicality there is so much to admire. The story is absorbing, though ultimately a bit on the empty side, but I find it impossible to be too harsh on the film because it reeks of individuality and the distinct flair Verhoeven would garnish so much American attention for in the future.............. Yeah.................

The first Robocop was thrilling, hilarious, and totally original--none of which has as much to do with the film's spawning two sequels (plus two separate television shows) as its $50 million-plus take at the box office. Though the Law of Diminishing Returns inevitably applies to the theatrical trilogy, the central premise is so strong that each of the lesser sequels has at least a few moments worth catching. That's because the original (wherein Detroit cop Peter Weller, killed in the line of duty, gets transformed into a crime-fighting cyborg) set up an entire world. Director Paul Verhoeven spends as much time lampooning television news, commercial products, and big business as he does on the story; however violent or gory things get (and they get quite icky), the tone throughout is comic, even giddy. Robocop 2, helmed by Irvin Kershner of The Empire Strikes Back fame, sobers up considerably. The film is rather underrated; sure, there are fewer ads and newsbreaks this time around, but there are several inventive touches--Robocop is briefly reprogrammed into a homily-spouting Dudley Do-Right; drug dealers step in to bail out the financially strapped city--and the villains (including the most foul-mouthed, amoral 12-year-old in movie history) are less outrageous than in the first installment. Robocop 3, however, is profit-driven hash. Having Robocop (now acted by Robert John Burke) join a citizens' uprising is a nice idea, and even the ninja android could have been fun, but the movie tries too often to be heartwarming, an emotion thoroughly out of place in this wickedly satirical series. --Bruce Reid

Its Robocop!.......2007-03-30
Its Robocop, who doesnt like them, evreyone should just have them. So go buy it ! lol It even has an extended version of the first movie.
It's Robocop, enough said........2007-01-19
The rating is for the overall package you get here. Now I don't need to go into details, as you already know what Robocop is all about. You get all three Robocop movies with excellent picture and sound in one nicely put package. The first one is the unrated cut. A lot of people don't really care for the sequals, but I think they are ok. I liked part three, two was ok. The thing I like about this trilogy is the continuity. The other one picks up where the previous one left off,a nd you still see the characters from the old ones.Excellent trilogy. Great presentation, great price. Get it now before it becomes rare.
Robocop FTW.......2007-01-04
Robocop is the best, I mean who doesnt like robocop. Peter Weller is the best one in my opinion.
Worth more than the Sum of its RoboParts.......2006-11-17
RoboCop: 1987
It's almost funny how close this is to being a bad movie or even a TERRIBLE movie. All the overzelous "punks" are here, the dated presentation, and some fairly aged stop motion animation would appear to add up to a RoboFlop. But dig deeper. Peter Weller practically single handedly turns this movie into something of legend. I will stop there. I don't want to give this movie too much praise because it does have some deep problems, but when you toll up the human element, the longing, the memory of family, his detachment, it practically is a modern day Frankenstein. The lead baddies are actually well represented and fleshed out, which is very important and the actual RoboCop "gear" still looks sweet and actually holds up well. I do get the feeling there were budget contraints but I'm shocked at this movie succeeding on many levels the Terminator misses. Throw in many dvd extras and the excellant box art and I can safely say this movie alone was worth the $15 I spent for the entire set. 8.5/10
RoboCop 2: 1990
For the first 45 minutes or so I was marveling at what may be a true stellar dark horse series. This second movie opened up getting everything right I liked about the first one... then at about that point the wheels fell off and the story suddenly went south with the telling of a second RoboCop... a drug addicted convict. Peter Weller may have been absent from half this movie! Which is really a shame because believe it or not most of cast isn't really that bad it's just that the story is so poorly constructed it's hard to even tell who, what, and mostly why. It's easier to digest once you realize this series seems to be purposely "B movie" material but it doesn't make it any more entertaining. I did find it interesting to see Robo riding a Harley... 2 years before Arnold. 6/10
RoboCop 3: 1992
Sort of works as a "bad movie". The Neo Punk look and most of the actors range from horrid to so-so. Peter Weller is no longer RoboCop which surprisingly doesn't affect this movie as much as I thought it would. Still how can you have a RoboCop movie where, again, he is missing from half the movie and you spend that time watching uninteresting "rebel movements" and even worse, bad robot ninjas? I really cannot understand how the script was approved. Through it all it was marginally entertaining but definitely the worst of the three. It does have some decent human moments, but mostly it just shouldn't have been made... like this. 4.5/10
The ROBOBOX version is LAME........2006-06-16
Amazon is confusing, they put the SAME reviews for two DIFFERENT DVD Boxsets. Make sure you DO NOT get the ROBOBOX and are looking at the Robocop MGM Trilogy. The great version of the Robocop collection is the MGM version with Robocop 1 UNCUT. The Robocop 1 in the ROBOBOX collection is EDITED! I was mislead by all the positive reviews so I ended up getting the lame Robobox which simply just has the movies, no extras, and a butchered/edited masterpiece (yep, there are a couple minutes missing from Robocop). Avoid the blue Robobox, it's not the same DVD set everyone here is praising, it's DIFFERENT, not the definitive version of these classic movies. I wish somebody made that clear before I made a big mistake.

Description
When Detroit's descent into chaos is further compounded by a police department strike and a new designer drug called Nuke, only Robocop can stop the mayhem. But in his way are an evil corporation that profits from Motor City crime and a bigger and tougher cyborg with a deadly directive: Take out Robocop. Containing the latest in gadgetry and weaponry as well as the brain of the madman who designed Nuke, this new cyborg isn't just more sophisticated than his predecessor...he's psychotic and out of control! And it's going to take everything Robocop has- maybe even his life-to save Detroit from complete and utter anarchy.

With the surprise success--both critical and commercial--of Robocop, it was inevitable that a sequel would emerge (actually, two sequels). But this follow-up lacked the dyspeptically funny vision of filmmaker Paul Verhoeven and wound up skimming the surface to repeat only the most superficial elements of the original: the big, clunky hero (played by Peter Weller), the ultra-violence (minus a dark sense of humor), and the plethora of action sequences. What plot there is deals with the corporation that runs the cops and its two-pronged attempt to squeeze every dime out of the populace and the city: create a new drug crisis (with an incredibly addictive synthetic drug the corporation manufactures, spread by a charismatic drug lord) and then attack with a bigger robot, one that eliminates Robocop at the same time. Would that they had. --Marshall Fine

Robocop fan.......2007-05-14
Not usual to see a sequel live up to the first but this one does the trick.
"Thank you for not smoking!".......2006-07-15
Robocop returns to serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law, in the 1990 sequel to the 1987 classic original.
Peter Weller revives his role as the futuristic Detroit cop turned cyborg, as does Nancy Allen (Blow Out) as Ann Lewis, and Dan O'Herlihy as OCP's president. Onboard this time around is director Irvin Kershner (Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back) replacing Paul Verhoeven.
Robocop is now battling a drug kingpin named Cain, played by Tom Noonan (Last Action Hero), who also leads the Nuke cult, a popular drug in the crime-ridden streets of Detroit. In the meantime, OCP is attempting to build a new cyborg to fight crime; the Old Man assigns a sexy young psychiatrist to overlook the project, who eventually recruits Cain as a new powerful cyborg, and turns a heavily damaged and destroyed Robocop into a wuss!
The movie retrieves the quirkiness of the original, with all the fictional TV ads, headline news, and shows, along with the gruesome violence and all-out chaos. However, the violence is tuned down from the original. The movie's highlight moments is watching Robocop commenting on the moon looking wonderful, lecturing young thugs on morals, and pulling his gun on a man smoking in a crowded area.
Robocop 2 is definitely not as good as Robocop, but, compared to the horrible Robocop 3 (in which Peter Weller does not star), is a worthwhile sequel.

Robocop 2,still a great Sci-Fi film.......2006-06-21
Robocop 2, the inevitable sequal to the first blockbuster Robcop film. Not nearlly as good as the first one,but entertaining to say the least. This film takes a more comic bookish means of showing the film so it is a little campy, but all intentional. At times, Robocop 2 is pointlessly violent, but I wouldn't categorize it as greusome unless you have a really weak stomach and nature. My only complaint is there is too much swearing in this film, but it is rated for it.It is just tiresome to here a 12yr. old kid with a gutter mouth nonstop throughout the film.I wanted him to shut up,or be shot/die sooner. The special effects are top notch for its day, remember this was made before all FX houses scrambled to become CGI artists to stay in business.I actually prefer more of the old school way FX facilities durring the times accomplished visual effects, and more often than not, look better than some of the overdone films of now that rely completely on CGI to tell a story which inevitably ruins the film most times.Nothing like being bored to death by a film that is just a special effects extraviganza. Depiste Robocop 2 not meeting the expectations,it is still a great/entertaining film.Murphy is still struggling with past, fragmented memories of who he used to be,but driven to fight crime and be the ultimate police officer despite the odds of pollitical manipulation and his own turning on him. This was a great film, the only regret is that this DVD offers no featurettes which would have been a nice touch.Well worth owning for the price and adding to your collection if you are a Sci-Fi fan.
Shockingly Gruesome and Pointless Sequel .......2006-06-04
The acts of violence and gruesomely graphic cybernetic experimentations performed in this film border on some morbid fascination of grotesque disfiguration of human beings. ROBOCOP 2 starts with a brilliantly filmed exposition stylishly photographed, scored and edited and though violent in nature in demonstrates the moral decay of society where only the fittest can truly survive. Peter Weller as officer Murphy now destined to remain RoboCop is still able to emote sympathy and compassion for his character. Murphy continually drives past the house of where his family resides and he is no longer part of. He wants his identity and his life back. Unfortunately, this aspect of the story is abruptly dropped in favor of Murphy tracking down a lowest of the low drug guru Cain played by Tom Noonan. OCP run by Daniel O'Herlihy is out to replace all human police officers with cyborgs. Detroit never had it so bad. Unfortunately OCP tries to upgrade the RoboCop model with a new cyborg with essentially just the brain and spinal cord of Noonan inserted into a massive and intimidating robot. In the process of this film Murphy's RoboCop becomes an ineffectual tool to the absurd nature of his superiors. He is not even a hero or a blunt instrument. He is just a pawn with total lack of motivation. His confrontation with Cain is anticlimactic and just too over-the-top. The confrontation is not even about good and evil. It is pointless. The entire film is beyond good taste and reason. Who would even want to live in such a dismal society of such moral decay where human beings are reduced to being biological components cut up for parts and inserted into steal and chrome mechanisms. Even Leonard Rosenman's score echoes this depressing outlook and bolsters the idea that there is something quite wrong here. If you are looking for some gratuitous violence of the most perverse, look no further. Luckily ROBOCOP 3 returned at least to a nobler outing for our hero.
Repulsive Violent Film.......2006-05-31
This is a below average film in every respect. Repulsive things here. The acting is not good at all. Pretty bad in fact. I did like the film very much. The violence is beyond poor taste. It is below average in every department and I did not enjoy it. The first 10 minutes of the film are good. It looked like it was going to be a good movie. But the film fell into violent after violent episodes. The concept creating another bio-robot was just revolting and turned me off.

Description
Called by Ken Russell "the greatest science-fiction film since Metropolis," controversial director Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop is a special effects-laden cult phenomenon. The film features a resurrected and roboticized hero (Peter Weller) in a new, supercharged cyborg body, struggling to reclaim his memory and avenge his own death. Writtern by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, this film is a grown-up superhero fantasy come to vivid, bloody life.

"Don't be fooled these people are terrorists!".......2006-07-01
The powers that be want to relocate women, children, the elderly from their homes to make way for Delta City. These people are labeled as "terrorists" for not wanting to leave. This was back in 1993.
That is the great thing about science fiction, you can point all all the injustice and absurdities of our time and get away with it.
Judge the movie on its on merits and don't be biased because the title is Robocop 3. It is fun and it is good science fiction. It's message of "out of control executive power" is even a bit scary as it is too close to home these days.
Oh and talk about fun, catch Bradley Whitford from West Wing and Jill Henessey from Law and Order and Rip Torn from "Men in Black" in supporting roles. It makes the movie worth watching over and over.
Robocop 3 should be arrested and shot!.......2006-03-08
Man, I just loved Paul Verhoeven's vision of Robocop depicted in the first Robocop. The graphic violence and dark humor for sure, but there was this undiscribable "mood" and "atmosphere" that a quality moviemaker brings to a film. Compared to the first Robocop, Robocop 3 should be arrested and shot. Robocop 3 is in violation of Robocop's third directive, "protect the innocent." This film definately harms the innocent viewer. Where to start? Robocop befriends a group of rag tag, poverty stricken homeless good guys who are fighting against the evil land developers who team up with, get this, the "Spatter Punks," punker rocker looking guys who terrify even the cops. Robocop does the cliche driving his car off of a parking garage to land in the middle of a gunfight. Also there is the precocious wiz kid cliche. Then, there are robot ninjas. That, alone should be enough to convince you. Also, Robocop flies around on a jet pack. I rest my case. Lastly, Robocop 3 just lacks that atmosphere and mood that made the first Robocop something funny and compeling.
Mass marketing Robo for the kids..........2005-12-17
If the second Robocop movie has some redeemable features, then the third instalment has hardly any. This film is the metamorphous of the Robocop franchise into a kid's marketed commodity. In this respect, this film seems to be a pilot for the children-friendly television series that soon followed (though this film is not be confused WITH the actual television show pilot).
The violence is low key and the inclusion of a child actor as one of the main central characters seems to confirm this. Maybe this was the inevitable conclusion - Robocop has all the hallmarks of a `superhero' and the commercialisation of this towards the children's toy market/comics may gather a new audience (young viewers) but will alienate an older audience at the same time. The superhero theme is cemented with Robocop's new jetpack and the `ninja' style villains (this movie was released when the ninja turtles franchise was in full swing).
The film also lacks the budget of the first two movies, which was a surprise as Robocop 3 was very hyped up to its confusing release date (set back time after time with delays) and was released in Britain straight-to-video.
This film can be viewed as a pilot, of the pilot of the tv series.
Completely horrible.......2005-09-16
Remember how blood curdlingly violent and loaded with dark humor the original Robocop was? Even it's first sequel had it's share, and that was partly what made the original Robocop so great, especially in the hands of Paul Verhoeven. With Robocop 3, Verhoeven is definitely gone, as is the violence and the dark humor, and so is original star Peter Weller, who wisely chose to skip this horrible schlockfest. Robert John Burke (Stephen King's Thinner, frequent guest roles on TV's Rescue Me and Law & Order: SVU) has the unfortunate task of playing Detroit's cyborg cop, taking on police corruption and such. There's not one redeeming factor about Robocop 3; just about everything from the action pieces, to the story, to the effects, are just plain bad. The surprisingly solid cast of supporting actors, including the returning Nancy Allen as Robocop's partner Lewis, along with CCH Pounder, Jill Hennessy, and Daniel Von Bargan, are wasted. All in all, there's a reason this was laughed at by audiences and critics when it was first released, and any fans of Robocop should just do themselves a favor and pretend this movie never happened.
Worst of the three .......2005-09-13
Dissapointing but, that's Orion's fault for making it PG-13. This movie still hangs on to some good dark humor but loses all of the action. PG-13 movies bug me because it's telling younger viewers that it's ok to watch people die, in a certain fashion. I mean, all PG-13 movies have nonstop explosions, like in this movie, where there is nonstop explosions, showing people go flying in the air. But, of course, if someone dies in a realistic fashion, it's not appropriate for children. I hate the way holywood does this and this movie is a perfect example of it. For some lousy reason, they rated it Pg-13, which ruined the movie. In the first one and 2 nd one, when Ed 209 (a gigantic robot) fires his minigun at cops....they die. In this, their cars blow up but somehow, they dodge the minigun????
This is a major letdown and I blame the fact that they rated it Pg-13 for that. On top of it, I hate it when movies have a little girl who is a complete genious. How is she so smart???? I mean come on! Robert John Burke does a fine job replacing Peter Weller so there's no problem there even though Weller did a better job. The humor is still there, not as good as the first 2, but still there, so that's a +. Buy the trilogy for the first 2 and not for this.
And for the reviewer saying this is good because it's a family movie, what the heck? The first two showed a very dark future while this one makes it so cheesy it's lame. So, how is that good? For children to sit and watch "low degrees of violence"? Whatever. PG-13 action movies are all the same, and this same is bad. Thank goodness for the humor or else, YIKES!

Description
There's a new law enforcer in town and he's half man, half machine! From the director of Total Recall and Basic Instinct comes a "sci-fi fantasy with sleek, high-powered drive" (Time) about an indestructible high-tech policeman who dishes out justice at every turn! When a good cop (Peter Weller) gets blown away by some ruthless criminals, innovative scientists and doctors are able to piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called "Robocop."Impervious to bullets and bombs, and equipped with high-tech weaponry, Robocop quickly makes a namefor himself by cleaning up the crime-ridden streets of violence-ravaged Detroit. But despite his new, hardened exterior, Robocop is tormented by scraps of memory of his former life, and relives vividnightmares of his own death at the hands of the vicious killers. Now he is out to seek more than justice...he wants revenge! "Fast, furious and entertaining" (L.A. Daily News), Robocop is "a fiercely paced action film" (Screen International) that doesn't let up on the thrills.

RoboCop, RoboCop, RoboCop and More RoboCop.......2006-08-28
Supposedly RoboCop Prime Directives was originally a TV miniseries released in 2001. I'm not sure where it aired, but each episode is feature film length and the violence/language varies from PG to R rated material.
The series includes Dark Justice, Meltdown, Resurrection, and Crash and Burn...and the movies should be watched in that order for them to make sense.
Page Fletcher (from HBO's The Hitchhiker) stars as RoboCop. He does about as good a job as Robert John Burke did in RoboCop 3. In fact, the whole Prime Directives series is on par with RoboCop 3...and that's not a compliment. It's not really a knock either. It's a declaration that Prime Directives is an average sequel-set to what were two great initial RoboCop films (RoboCop and RoboCop 2).
Prime Directives takes place ten years after the first RoboCop. Alex Murphy/RoboCop is no longer needed in Delta City and is now considered a nuisance by OCP. John Cable, Alex Murphy's former partner, is killed and brought back as a new RoboCop and is instructed to destroy Murphy/RoboCop.
OCP is now in the hands of corrupt executives (one is a malevolent new CEO, one is Cable/RoboCop's ex-wife and one is Murphy/RoboCop's own son) and they have a new technology called SAINT that they will use to run the city and market to consumers "to make all of your decisions for you". But there is a terrorist that wants to infect SAINT with a computer virus that could take down all computers on the net and release a deadly nanotechlogy into humans.
All 4 episodes run apx 90 minutes each, so we're talking about 6 hours of 3-star RoboCop. So if you've got a rainy day and a craving for RoboCop, this series is for you.
As of this writing, the series is available as a set only from Amazon resellers, and the set is about 1/2 the price of buying all 4 separately. But Prime Directives is far from collector caliber, so I'd recommend just finding these to rent, and keep the viewing order that I mentioned earlier in mind.
Good for a miniseries.......2005-12-10
These four movies are like a TV miniseries, so they aren't as good as a movie with a big production budget might be. Still, they're pretty good, and if you're a sci-fi or Robocop fan it's certainly worth the time and money to watch them. It doesn't say on the box what order to watch them in, so here it is: Dark Justice, Meldown, Resurrection, Crash & Burn.
Robocop 4.......2005-02-14
I did not even know these new Robocop movies had been made. I take it they where T.V movies or something? However the big reason that they do not have part 4, 5, 6, or 7 on them is because it would have to be called Robocop 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4. These are a 4 part series all spanning over into the continuity of each other. I saw these DVD's for sale individualy on the shelf at very cheap prices, but I thought they where the TV series that was made a few years ago. They are not. These are 2001 made movies, each running for about an hour and twenty minutes and all continue the story into each other. But I never watched these untill I rented all 4 in one. Amazon dont show anything like it, but here in Australia it is titled as ACTION PACK 2, and is 2 DVD's with 2 double sided discs in each. The last one is the four Robocop series movies. On 2 flip sided discs.
The lowdown on the adventure is that it's ten years since robocop was made. He has been serving the public trust, protecting the innocent, and in some ways upholding the law. There are all new crime bosses in Delta City. And OCP as as in charge and as corrupted as ever.
Robo has a new cheif John Cableat the station who was Robo's partner when he was alive as Alex Murphy. Throguhout the first episode Robo is having memory flash backs of John, and eventualy John discovers who it is underneath the titanium armour known as Robocop. Eventualy John Cable is shot dead in the line of duty but reserected as the new and improved version as Robocop, but corrupted by an OCP executive, his first mission, while being unknown to anybody yet, is to frame Robocop by attacking the head of OCP and various other things. Robocop is then disgraced as a fugitive and hunted down to be taken off the streets. OCP send out Cable and introduce the public to the new and improved Robocop unit. Robocop tries to make Cable remember who he is. Will Robo make him remember or not? Eventualy another of OCP's executives gets his plan to make every hom ein Delta City run by the one mega computer operating in the OCP biulding will let nothing get in the way of his dream, even if it means murder. Eventualy when the machine is about to go online and take over everything in the city, a bad guy attempts to upload a virus on the computer that will spread to all computers, and then to humans!! Will Robocop be able to defeat the new and improved Robocop unit with his friend John Cable inside? Will Robo be able to do something about the new computer virus while being hunted down as a fugitive by OCP and Cable? Find out by watching, it might suprise you what happens in the end.
Overall I thought the whole thing was very interesting. Lots of comedy and fun and action, I thought some parts where pretty lame and boring. Some things I did not like, I hated the way Robocop sounded when he walked, being so used to the sound he is supposed to have, the new one did not work for me. There is no sign of an ED-209 anywhere in sight. During a grave sight scene, it shows Alex Murphy as having died in 1992, obviously they never bothered to work out what year Robocop (original) was supposed to be set in.
Apart from that the whole thing is pretty enjoyable. You'll have to own all 4 DVD's to enjoy the whole story line. Other wise it is just movies that dont make sense. Robocop's ultimiate challenge is another Robocop, new and improved and the man is also one of Alex Murphys best friends. So join Robo on an adventure through Delta City and see what happens if your interested.

Tech specs update.......2004-05-30
It seems that everywhere you look on-line to fine the DVD tech specs you get different answers. Well, I'm here to set things straight.
Despite what other R1 sites say about this title, it is issued in Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) with English Dolby 2.0 Surround. Surprisingly it's a good strong surround mix. Dialogue, despite some negetive reviews of the broadcase version, is strong and easily understandable.
The R2 release however appears to be in Dolby 5.1, which is ashame because the R1 could have benefitted from a 5.1 mix. But anyway...
Picture quality? Pretty good for a TV show. The only issue is with out-of-focus background lights. They have that digital compression "dot crawl". But other than that, all live action and special f/x look extremely sharp and clear.
Just recently bought this series in geer up for the new release of the Robocop Trilogy. Now, I'd like to see the mid-'90s Robocop series released on DVD. The only thing lacking in this series is the lack of use of Robo's automated targeting grid system. I always found that aspect very cool about the theatrical movies.

Robocop: Dark Justice
Ever since I picked up the trilogy for a whopping $15 I have since became a major fan. Not so much for the decent action, not so much for the surreal satire which is often humorous, but for the man beneath the iron.
Page Fletcher (of Hitchhiker fame) takes over this role and makes it as outstanding as Peter Weller. Though he doesn't have the walk down perfectly, he does talk the talk. Most of the other actors are quite good, the story is actually interesting, and the while the effects are no where near the consistant quality of the feature films I was surprised at how good they are! Despite the sometimes sagging effects of this Canadian mini-series (Robo's suit and walking effect are a bit lame) I must say this does for the small screen practically what the first movie did for the large screen, and that for me says a lot.
This first disc has a LOT of heart and strikes a chord with me when dealing with humanity. I have since ordered the other three and am looking forward to completing the story which obviously picks up on the next installment. A definite buy for any RoboCop fan that loves the humanity more than the explosions.
