A distant and animated sequel to the 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert as an immortal Scottish swordsman, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance concerns the tale of Colin MacLeod, a 2nd century, Celtic warrior who becomes immortal following his defeat at the hands of Roman tyrant Marcus Octavius. Colin spends the next couple of millenia chasing after Marcus--also immortal--as the latter reinvents himself time and again as a ruler of kingdoms in every corner of the globe. The longtime duel extends into Earth's dystopian future about 200 years from now, where Colin--now a wandering mercenary--finds Marcus once again making lives miserable as head of a private government wielding a deadly virus. Drawing Colin into the fight is the lovely Dahlia, hauntingly reminiscent of every woman the hero has loved over hundreds of years. Dynamic, visually compelling, and boldly imaginative, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance is full of surprises and more than just another story of an embittered loner meandering through a futuristic wasteland. Directed by the prolific Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Neo-Tokyo). --Tom Keogh

There Can Be Only One ... Except In Franchise Versions.......2007-07-02
Any time any established 'franchise' property gets an animated treatment, there's a strong tendency to do comparisons between the different versions of the established 'mythology.' Will be toon/anime be as good as the film versions? Will it be as good as the television series? For that matter, was the television series as good as the film that launched the franchise? Etc. and so forth. We're all human -- the great irony in the grand debate about an idea centered on immortals -- and maybe that, in the end, is what the HIGHLANDER franchise is telling us about ourselves: we'll always be looking for something not so much as 'new' as it is a mild 'change' to the original.
As a tweak to the HIGHLANDER history, HIGHLANDER: THE SEARCH FOR VENGEANCE may OR may not serve as a jumping on point for new fans as well as a great reason for the established fans to get together and watch as an audience; I say "may or may not" because I don't know. I've only seen the first two films and a handful of the television episodes, so my perspective is not really of fandom nor the uninitiated 'newbie.' Simply, I enjoy genre movies, and I thoroughly enjoyed VEANGEANCE for what it was: another outing within the myths set into motion by the original film.
I've read a handful of reviews that have strongly criticized the animation -- "wasn't strong enough," "wasn't visual enough," "wasn't different enough" -- and I'd have to agree that there were some sequences that felt a bit derivative of other anime ... but I'd have to defend the film by saying that it didn't distract from my overall enjoyment of seeing Colin MacLeod in his quest to vanquish fellow immortal but sworn enemy Marcus Octavius (sp?) for all of the pain caused throughout the centuries. Every joy Colin has found -- from women, to family, to friendship -- has been destroyed at Marcus's hands, and THE SEARCH FOR VENGEANCE is, at its core, about the good old-fashioned cinematic qualities of 'payback.' Nothing more, nothing less. There isn't anything poetic here, per se, except for the fact that history's one true immortal -- love -- will eventually find you again even if the one person who provided it keeps changing.
Outside of that, VEANGEANCE offers enough excitement to keep any HIGHLANDER fan -- new or old -- welcome at the table of the Clan MacLeod for one more adventure.
Pretty good... And I'm no fan of highlander.......2007-06-24
I never followed the original Highlander. To be honest, what little bit I caught throughout the years was not enough to even get my long term attention. I saw Endgame back in 2000 and I can't remember if I liked it or not. I feel my ignorance of the movies is a good thing because there was nothing for me to expect. Now after saying that, I have to admit that I found this enjoyable and it has a permanent home in my collection of anime.
This movie is nothing more than a tale of blind revenge. Colin's lover was killed by another immortal named Marcus and he set out for revenge. I found it funny as he11. It was just laugh out loud funny to me for the simple fact the guy chased him for 2000 years. He either got beat up or came up short. The flashbacks of him chasing Marcus even through the great wars such as world war 2 in airplanes was just hilarious.
The plot was pretty weak but the action scenes past and present definitly makes up for this. The voice acting for the characters was pretty good. The old man's spirit who taged along with Colin provided some good comedy.
The animation was pretty good to include the soundtrack. And like I said before the action scenes were great. Lots of shooting and swordplay.
For that price, I recommend this to anyone who likes hack and slash type anime. Since I'm not a real fan of Highlander it doesn't make sense to say that all or even most Highlander fans will be satisfied. If your a fan I guess you should check it out.
WOW!!!.......2007-06-20
This was one of the best animated movies I have ever seen.
Powerful characters, great acting.
The search for a good sequel is over.......2007-06-17
Since the notorious "Highlander II: The Quickening" was released in 1991, the legions of "Highlander" fans around the world have longed for a good sequel. The producers made a second attempt with 1994's "Highlander III: The Sorcerer," the result being better than "Highlander II," but still far from a fine sequel. The most recent attempt, 2000's "Highlander: Endgame," teamed the movies' Connor MacLeod with the television series' Duncan MacLeod, but the film was too dark, too violent, and too shallow. 2007 promised two more "Highlander" sequels: the live-action "Highlander: The Source," directed by Brett Leonard, and an anime film, "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance," directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the prolific anime director behind "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" and "Ninja Scroll."
It's curious that somebody didn't think to make "Highlander" as anime before, because it's a perfect match. "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" is proof of that. The film is essentially a Japanese re-telling of the "Highlander" legend, this time revolving around Colin MacLeod (who, for those of you fed up with all these immortal MacLeods, is just adopted into the clan). He begins life in the first century A.D., preparing to lead his army of 400 against an army of 4,000 Romans led by Marcus, an evil immortal in love with the concept of Rome. Colin's one true love sedates him one night and visits Marcus to beg for Colin's life - but when she refuses to sleep with him and "murders" him instead, Marcus crucifies her and surprises Colin's sleeping army. 2,000 years later, in future post-apocalyptic New Jersey and then New York, a bitter, relentless Colin MacLeod lives for his quest for vengeance, and nothing more.
It's an interesting story, written by David Abramowitz, the man responsible for much of "Highlander" the series' greatness. It also adds a newly fantastic element to the "Highlander" saga, including horned demons, multi-headed ghouls, and a very amusing (and for Colin, obnoxious) ghost named Amergan. All this is stylishly and beautifully drawn according to Kawajiri's hard-edged vision. It's at once a bloody tale of vengeance through the ages, an explosive futuristic sci-fi actioner, and an intelligent love story of reincarnation. It's also, without question, the first good "Highlander" sequel. It's ironic that the sequel we fans have been longing for for so long has arrived in the form of an animated film, but rejoice! It has. "Highlander: The Search for Vengeance" is a great movie and an excellent sequel, and if you're a "Highlander" or anime fan, it's essential. How wonderful it feels to have the franchise's trademark line, "There can be only one," no longer apply to its films.
A remake done right........2007-06-13
I wasn't sure about what to expect from this one. I mean, everybody loves the Highlander franchise, but what would the Japanese take on it be? The answer is a brillaint animated reinvention of a bonafide action/fantasy classic with all of the thrills of the original propery and none of the baggage of the sequels. As with the preceding work of animated genius, "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" (which shares a director and artistic style with this film), this was a true collaberation between eastern and western styles and ideas. The result is extremely complimentary and I can only hope we see more of this in the future. If you aren't familiar with the original film, I'd suggest you view it before taking this one on, as very little time is wasted on exposition. The writers assume you know what's up and treat the story accordingly. The biggest difference between the original films and series is that Colin McCloud's focus isn't on hunting the other immortals to gain their quickening and the whole "there can be only one" battle royale aspect. In fact, he attempts to avoid a confrontation early on with an adversary (with a giant chainsaw...cooool!) who seeks to take his head for that reason. Colin wants the blood of one man and one man only: Marcus Octavius, the Roman ruler who crucified his wife and destroyed his homeland. His quest for vengeance has him chasing his much-more-skilled adversary throughout human history; from feudal Japan to WWII to where we meet him in a post-apocalyptic future (my favorite kind of future!). He is accompanied only by the spirit of an old druid and his 2000 years of hatred as he tracks his foe to a ruined city full of sick, wretched souls living underground in need of a champion to lead them in revolution. But Colin has wasted his entire existence pursuing vengeance, so what does he care, right? Perhaps a bit of perspective on the nature of life, even mortal life, can show him the way. The story is great, the art is beautiful, the action is brutal, and yes there is sex and nudity involved so don't buy it for the kiddies. This is great, R-rated animated entertainment and a great way to spend an hour-and-a-half. It's also a wonderful tribute and addition to a franchise that has seldom lived up to it's potential. Like I said, this is a remake done right; it reinvents the characters and concepts of the original without being just a copy. Now if only Queen had been on the soundtrack....

Long before Vengeance Is Mine, American directors like Jules Dassin (Naked City) invested the procedural with journalistic detail. Similarly, Japan's Shohei Imamura (The Eel) lays out all the facts for the viewer's delectation: names, dates, times of death, and methods of execution, i.e. "skull crushed with blunt object." (In the DVD booklet, Michael Atkinson compares him to journalist-turned-filmmaker Samuel Fuller.) The murderer, however, is no mystery. Imamura introduces us to the unrepentant Iwao Enokizu (Mishima's Ken Ogata) in the opening sequence. He then backtracks to the clutch of murders the con man committed in the early 1960s. At the same time, he keeps an eye on the cops as they follow his trail, while flashing back to Enokizu's rebellious youth. Based on Ryuzo Saki's true-crime novel, Vengeance Is Mine further deviates from the neo-realist noirs of old by withholding judgment. That isn't completely surprising, since it was preceded by nine years in which Imamura worked exclusively in the documentary realm. Vicious killer that he is, Enokizu is outgoing rather than downbeat. Further, his past includes a weak-willed father and an unfaithful wife, but that information doesn't make him sympathetic. Nor does it explain his crimes. Enokizu is an empty vessel for the audience to fill as it sees fit. As Imamura acknowledges in "My Approach to Filmmaking" (also part of the booklet), "I love all the characters in my films, even the loutish and frivolous ones." Vengeance Is Mine is a must for fans of Japanese cinema and unconventional thrillers alike. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
LIKE ALL GREAT SHOHEI IMAMURA PROTAGONISTS, VENGEANCE IS MINE'S IWAO ENOKIZU (KEN OGATA) LURKS ON THE MARGINS OF JAPANESE SOCIETY. A THIEF, MURDERER, AND CHARMING LADY-KILLER, IWAO IS ON THE RUN FROM THE POLICE. DIRECTOR SHOHEI IMAMURA TURNS THIS FACT-BASED STORY, OF THE SEVENTY-THREE-DAY KILLING SPREE OF A REMORSELESS MAN FROM A DEVOUTLY CATHOLIC FAMILY, INTO A COLD, PERVERSE, AND, AT TIMES, DIABOLICALLY FUNNY TALE OF THE PRIMITIVE COEXISTING WITH THE MODERN. MORE THAN JUST A TRUE-CRIME CASE, VENGEANCE IS MINE BARES MANKIND'S SNARLING ID.
Customer Reviews:
Savage........2007-05-28
Again, Shohei Imamura's total control of his craft shows itself in his brutal masterpiece Vengeance Is Mine. This true story follows Iwao Enokizu (Ken Ogata), a con artist, thief and killer. The film starts with Enokizu's capture and uses unusual, but brilliantly effective editing and pacing to unravel the story of his life. We see Enokizu as a troubled boy in a strict Catholic home and turn into a scam artist and womanizer. As an adult Enokizu's resentment towards his religous father is compounded by rumors of an affair with the father and Enokizu's wife. As his hatered grows stronger and his crimes become more serious, we see first hand Enokizu's downward spiral into murder and the devastating consequences for those around him.
The disturbing nature of this film doesn't lie in it's gore factor (there are very few actual murder scenes), but rather with the non-judgemental view taken of the killer. Imamura neither glorifies nor condems Enokizu. He simply lets the character exist, and lets his inherent nihilism reveal itself. This nihilism is something that both Enokizu and the audience must grapple with throughout the film. Ultimately, Enokizu can only kill innocent people, being too much of a coward to face those he truly hates. This is fully realized in two emotionally gutwrenching scenes at the end of the film; one with Enokizu's lover and another with his father.
The family drama, the cat-and-mouse game between Enokizu and the cops, and some interesting third-act revalations make this two hour plus film quite an undertaking. Don't watch it while making dinner. But with the great acting (Ken Ogata especially), outstanding editing, interesting shooting locations and masterful direction, Imamura takes this messy story and turns it into an artistic, esoteric thriller. A sort of japanese Taxi Driver. The ending is pure Imamura; a poetic farewell to Enokizu that is both eerily enigmatic and profoundly meaningful.
Finally on DVD.......2007-05-24
It's fortunate that this, one of Imamura's very best feature films, was finally reissued on DVD. Considering that this film was one of The Criterion Collection's very first laserdisc releases and has obtained an impressive cult following, I think that it's been too long of a time coming!
This was Imamura's return to cinematic fiction, eleven years beyond the release of his brilliant, high-budget flop, "The Profound Desire of the Gods" and following a string of excellent, well-received postwar television documentaries that established him as the most insightful realist of Japanese film. "Vengeance Is Mine" has all of the Imamura trademarks: incestuous relations, miserable poverty, human oddities and a fleshy mountainload of sweaty, passionate sex. However, the brutal violence and narrative indifference that Imamura carefully depicts distinguish this film from any other in his oeuvre. The brutal exploits of Ken Ogata's serial killer are presented with uncomfortably dispassionate detail, featuring understated, nuanced and remarkably effective cinematography. Fiction is rarely so honest, or so chilling.
The scene that most viewers of this film seem to remember best is the last, when Mikuni and Baisho throw Ogata's post-cremated bones to their fate only to see them hang defiantly suspended in mid-air. But the most remarkable scene of this film is one that nobody seems to notice. A portmanteau set was created to depict Ogata climbing the stairs as he prepares to murder the mother of his lover; in a hall adjoining the stairwell, his own mother (hundreds of miles away, in her own home and a state of senility) staggers quietly, preparing to berate her husband for the amorous relationship with his daughter-in-law that he hasn't quite pursued. The production design, execution and symbolist implications of this scene are staggering; rarely in cinema does one encounter theatrical conventions so neatly and brilliantly conveyed. Imamura was a true genius of his art.
The cast is as excellent as the story. Seasoned, popular veterans (Rentaro Mikuni, Nijiko Kiyokawa) are paired with numerous bright young stars of the late '70s (leading man Ken Ogata, Mitsuko Baisho, Chocho Miyako), many of whom went on to achieve much greater fame. Ogata and especially Baisho were mainstays in Imamura's casting until the director's death in 2006.
Imamura will probably be best remembered for "The Ballad Of Narayama," "Black Rain," or "The Eel," and that's just as well. The accessibility of those films doesn't detract from their excellence in the slightest. But "Vengeance Is Mine" occupies a curious position as one of the man's most unique, innovative and truly provocative films. The sensitive and objective viewer will come away from it feeling simultaneously threshed and comforted.
This film was initially released to Japanese theaters on my birthday: April 21st, 1979. A pleasant coincidence!
On many complexities of the human soul..........2002-02-23
In the beginning of Vengeance, there is a key scene of the film's main character. He is unrinating, in order to wash his hands off the blood of his victim. He then notices he's under a tree, wipes his hands with his jacket and picks an apple. He takes a bite and spits.
However, the point -we understand as the story unfolds engrossingly to contain many other characters in similarly true moments- is in fact to lay bare the human soul.
Immamura achieves very successfuly this main objective, through his immense storytelling powers: the over the top performances he pulls from his superb cast and his brilliant melding of the many subplots.(The editing here, in my opinion, is one the best works ever done in a movie.)
In a little over two hours, Vengeance speaks volumes about the many complexities of the human soul and offers many opportunities to confront its dark side. Thus, it is not an easy movie to watch. Yet it offers many insights to the Japanese culture, and is a great point to start knowing the Japanese cinema as well. Highly recommended.
gripping from start to finish.......2000-09-10
In this highly ambiguous tale of moral uncertainty--both in terms of the killer himself and all those around him (his father, his wife, his lover and her mother), Imamura is at the top of his game. I saw this film at a film festival in Berkeley the first time and it haunted me for a long long time. The commentary on the back cover of the VHS says it best "Imamura's refusal to either despise or forgive his protagonist makes the movie a devestating experience."
REVEALING LOOK AT A COLD BLOODED MURDERER.......1999-04-21
Imamura constucts a telling portrait of an impassive sociopath. The pacing is purposefully slow and minimal, giving the killer character ample room to reveal himself while both doing the simplest things and, especially, when interacting with those around him. This film is the higher brained cousin of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
I think its important to note that the killer in Vengeance is Mine, is by no means a serial killer. I've heard him described as that, and its a misinformed judgement. A serial killers pathology revolves around sex. In this film, the killer murders out of a distance, a coldness for human life. He kills for money, shelter, for survival, having little care (although he does try) for anyones life but his own.

The second sequel to the mold-making action film Die Hard brings Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) to New York City to face a better villain than in Die Hard 2. Played by Jeremy Irons, he's the brother of the Germanic terrorist-thief Alan Rickman played in the original film. But this bad guy has his sights set higher: on the Federal Reserve's cache of gold. As a distraction, he sets McClane running fool's errands all over New York--and eventually, McClane attracts an unintentional partner, a Harlem dry cleaner (Samuel L. Jackson) with a chip on his shoulder. Some great action sequences, though they can't obscure the rather large plot holes in the film's final 45 minutes. --Marshall Fine
Description
The third installment of the hugely succesful Die Hard series, reteams Bruce Willis and director John McTiernan in a new action/adventure extravaganza of special effects, unexpected comedy and non-stop thrills.
Customer Reviews:
Best of the series.......2007-05-17
One of my guilty pleasures is watching action films that have good honest putrid to the core villains who are so smart that I can actually start pulling from them. Such films are rare. The reason for this is simple. So much time is spent working in tough guy cliches' and wild stunts that the creators of such films don't pay much attention to character development. In "Die hard with a Vengeance" The writers give us stunts galore. They give us the standard macho commentary to the hilt. But they also came up with bad guy who is clever you just got to like him.
This last installment of the trilogy that launched Bruce Willis' career is undoubtedly as entertaining as the first. Reprising his role as director, John McTiernan guides Willis and Samuel L. Jackson through New York City in a deadly game in which all odds are stacked against them. Recurrent in the movie is the theme that in life things may not always be what they seem, as racial relations are explored through the unlikely friendship of Willis and Jackson and the mystery of `Simon' is revealed-and of course the means by which he seeks his vengeance. Truly a great movie and I recommend all parts.
Die Hard with a Vengence (Special Edition).......2007-05-08
I have always enjoy Die Hard movies, and like the first 2 episodes, it's always pack with endless actions.
A mad bomber is in New York and wants McClane, why?.......2007-03-04
After the huge and growing success of the first two "Die Hard" movies, the world clamored for a third. But how do you keep it fresh? This story is not on Christmas, moves us to McClane's home turf in New York, splits him off from Holly (she is still in California and they haven't spoken for a year), and instead of the pleasant African-American cop Sgt Powell, we get Samuel L. Jackson as a proud and a tad angry African-American named Zeus Carver (which leads to an early misunderstanding, "Hey, Zeus" sounding like the Spanish pronunciation of Jesus, right?).
During the opening shot establishing that we are in New York, the title sequence ends in a rather stunning way and we are off to the races. However, in this movie McClane doesn't impose himself into the situation, he is dragged in by the villain, who calls himself Simon and who seems to have a some kind of personal grudge against him.
The way Zeus is pulled into this mess is also quite interesting and I have to say that Samuel L. Jackson adds as much to the movie and keeping it fresh as I am sure the writers and the producers hoped. He is terrific and makes a great foil and partner for Willis' McClane.
We expect explosions and impossible stunts in the "Die Hard" movies and get them aplenty here. They found ways to stick them in (and don't) where we don't often expect them. Jeremy Irons is fine as Simon. His army seems to be composed of people who believe in the story he tells about why he is doing this, but some seem to be there as mercenaries without any belief. It is quite a fascinating weave of textures in character.
Pay attention to even the little details in the beginning because they come back. Nothing is in there for idle chat even if it seems like idle chat.
The production budge of this movie was even bigger than the first two, but the U.S. gross was down a bit from Die Hard 2, however, the gross overseas was about has big as the total gross fro the second film. It was huge.
I will say that there is an awful lot of swearing and f-words in this movie that I found grinding after awhile. Really, writers, you can use other words. We do not need a curse every other word to know that these guys are under stress. Graham Greene's does a great job and his character is under just as much stress and you found a way that he didn't swear (I don't believe). Thanks for that at least.
There are some extras on the making of the film, the director's voice over commentary if you like watching the film that way, and stuff on how the special effects were done.
If you like this kind of thing, it is pretty good and part of a now classic series.
The Greatest.......2007-01-08
The Greatest Die Hard Movie. This one never stops with the suspense.
An Under-rated Die Hard film.......2006-12-17
Most fans don't seem to like this one and although I don't think it's as good as the first 2, I think it's still a fun film. A man named Simon (well played by Jeromy Irons) says he wants to play a game with John Mclaine or he'll continue to cause mayhem in the city. So the police have choice but to call a hungover John Mclaine to do whatever Simon says. Samual L. Jackson plays a shopkeeper who Simon makes team up with Willis after he prevents Willis from getting killed. Well since Simon makes him wear a sign in the middle of the city that says I hate black people, well not in those words but worse actually. They than have to solve Simon's riddles and get hints to where he planted bombs all over the city. The film has an inventive plot that at least is different than the first 2. It also sounds a lot better than the upcoming plot of part 4. I mean in that one John Mclaine is to team up with a hacker (Justin Long) against....internet terrorists. I'm not kidding, that is the plot lol.
Part 1 and 2 have more heart and emotion than this one and his wife Holly is nowhere to be seen. But still it's a good pop corn flick and I can't really say that it's not a smart film. Samual L. Jackson makes a good partner for Willis too even if the script has either complain or argue with Willis too much. I mean there's one scene where they are trying to find a bomb while Jackson accuses Willis of wanting to call him a prejudice name. Probably the best thing about the movie is that it links it with part 3. Where Mclaine learns that Simon is the brother of Alan Rickman's villian from the first film.

The third stop in Chan-wook Park's breathless revenge trilogy, Lady Vengeance comes down slightly--just slightly--from the astonishing highs of middle segment Oldboy. Elegant and ultraviolent in equal measures, Lady Vengeance requires rapt attention from the opening moments, as Park unloads his set-up in a jumble of characters and flashbacks. At the center is a doll-faced ex-con named Geum-ja (Yeong-ae Lee), who just spent 13 years in the slammer for killing a little boy. There's much more to her case than the public knows, and Geum-ja has been carefully, quietly preparing for revenge against the man who put her in this situation. We watch those gears turning throughout the movie, but as Lady Vengeance nears its completion it broadens into an even bigger event than Geum-ja expected. Funny and horrifying, Lady Vengeance is as measured as Geum-ja's own preparations, and has a gorgeous sort of logic about it. As impressive as those machinations are to watch, the movie doesn't make as forceful an argument as Oldboy on just how revenge might be as punishing to the revenge-taker as for his target. Lee is a cool heroine, and Min-sik Choi, who did such heroically exhausting service in Oldboy, is here employed as the monster. (The film's title in the U.S., Lady Vengeance, is different from international title Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, a closer tie to the first part of the trilogy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.) --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Not "Oldboy" class, but still a good film.......2007-06-11
Despite some fancifull effects and some really terrific and artistic director's shots in some points, this film is probably the weakest link in Park's magnificent trilogy on revenge. It keeps though the viewer's interest throughout, albeit it is not so unpredictable as the two previous films in the series. On the plus side, I may add that revenge is more than justified this time, since the evil doer is a serial killer of small children and the revenge itself is delivered finally in a more "democratic" way.
Venceance is best served cold........2007-06-11
Lady Vengeance (Chan-wook Park, 2005)
In 2000, Chan-wook Park, a relatively obscure director, and Yeon-ae Lee, a young actress, teamed up for JSA: Joint Security Area, the movie that shot both of them to stardom in their native Korea. Park was to explode onto the international scene with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and the multiple-award-winning Oldboy; Lee continued being popular in Korea, but not so much outside it. All that changed when Park brought her back in to be the lead in Lady Vengeance, the final installment of his revenge trilogy. Poof--instant international stardom!
As with the other revenge films, Lady Vengeance has as its main character a person who has been wrongly imprisoned. In this case, it's Geum-Ja (Lee), who went to prison for kidnap and murder for thirteen years. Now she's out, and she wants revenge. In order to get it, she enlists the help of a number of previously-released prison inmates who'd grown fond of her while they were incarcerated together, and the bunch put together an elaborate plan for the real killer's demise.
It's a fun movie, as long as you're not turned off by a pervasive suggestion of violence (not a great deal of which is actually shown, in contrast to Oldboy). It's very straightforward, which lends the movie a somewhat deliberate pace; there aren't any red herrings being tossed around. We just have Geum-Ja's single-minded devotion to revenge, her plan, and its execution, on the plot side of things. This gives Park time to develop a number of the characters in interesting ways, especially Geum-Ja; interwoven with the flashback scenes of prison life are a number of earlier scenes that give us a sense of who she is as a person, and the extent to which prison changed her. Or did it? Were all her selfless acts in prison, where she was known as an angel, geared towards making allies to help her with her plan (which, at one point, she said began the day she went to prison)? We're never explicitly told, but in the end, it's a secondary consideration; the revenge is what matters. Lady Vengeance is simple and powerful, and worth your time. *** ½
A tale of revenge and redemption for Lee Gum-Jaa.......2007-05-30
Lady Vengeance is the third and final installment in Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy that began with Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy, and to me, the best in the series. And all thanks to Lee Young-Ae as Lee Gum-Jaa, exuding a calm, sad, but elegant beauty. Love that red eyeshadow, long black coat and boots! The vengeance is justified, plotted more strategically, created like a cake per the wondrous artistic opening sequence, and the emotional poignancy more than that of Park's first two films. And the mostly melancholy music, highlighted by the theme "Mareta Mareta" adds to the film's ambience. But this movie makes more of a case for justified revenge and killing than the other two films.
In the story, told with recurring flashbacks, Lee Gum-Jaa has finished serving a thirteen and a half year sentence for murdering a 5-year old boy. Turns out though that she was forced to take the rap or else her own daughter would be murdered. During her incarceration, she spends her time hatching up a scheme against the actual killer, Mr. Baek, the elementary school English teacher who took her in when she was pregnant, and blackmailed her by threatening to kill her daughter if she didn't take the rap.
For her grand scheme, she does favours for or uses certain people. She gives a kidney to an inmate suffering from chronic kidney disease. She also slowly poisons the Witch, a horrible, obese predatory inmate who has a penchant for chubby females and is a terror among the other inmates. Creating a wonderful cake out of some pathetic ingredients wows the baker Mr. Chang, who gives her a job at a bakery after her release. And becoming Christian is just a way to reduce her sentence to show how reformed she is. Indeed, her cold response to the warm welcome given her by the preacher who "converted" her at the train station is, "Why don't you go sc--w yourself?"
She finds her cute daughter Jenny living in Australia with foster parents. Jenny can't speak a word of Korean, but nevertheless wants to go to Korea--check out the brief scene where she forces Lee Gum-Jaa to take her there. Jenny though is a bit disgruntled, wondering why she was dumped.
The turning point in the film is when Gum-Jaa is about to kill Baek and discovers he has killed other children. It's not now a point of personal vengeance but giving the parents of the murdered children their bit of vengeance to this serial murderer.
There are highly emotional bits, where Lee Gum-Jaa explains her past to Jenny, with Mr. Baek translating at gunpoint. More disturbing is the scene where the parents of the murdered children react after seeing videos of Baek killing their offspring.
It's not only the search for revenge that's key but also redemption. Although Lee Gum-jaa's life stemmed from a great mistake she made in her youth, she perceives this pessimistic indelible brand of a sinner. My sins are too great and deep She says of Baek, "he made a sinner out of me," and when Jenny asks if she wasn't happy to meet her, Lee tearfully says "Too happy for a sinner like me." She tells an inmate in her "Christian phase" that "Prayer is like a scrubbing towel. It scrubs off all your sins, then your skin will become as new as a baby's a**." Seems she didn't take her own advice, because she is too hard on herself.
Lady Vengeance is the most stylish of the three revenge films, although maybe with some over-elaborate and indulgent bits. The pistol made for her only shoots at very short distances, but the double barrels and ornate carvings are clearly for aesthetic purposes, but in one scene, she has enough wits to run and shoot the hand off the knife-wielding thug who's abducted Jenny. Why not use an automatic?
Symmetry: at the beginning, the Christian preacher waiting for her encourages to eat the block of white tofu so she won't sin again. At the end, she holds a cake with white frosting and tells her daughter to live white. Falling snow symbolizes purity, a new start, and makes for one poignant ending to a film I've watched over and over again.
Completing a Trilogy..........2007-05-04
Park Chanwook proved genius with Oldboy. His master-film-work and slow, suspenseful storytelling methods drove the viewers of that film to the brink, all the way up to the terrible twist of an ending. Before that, we had Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, as gritty a revenge flick as there is outside of Deathwish. And now, we have Lady Vengeance....
Before I parade off on the glorifications of this film, I will simply say that this isn't what one would expect from a revenge film. There are no killing sprees, no thug-like menaces that suddenly pop up to show us what our hero is capable of. Lady Vengeance just has one angry woman who wants to get her revenge on the man who ruined her life. Sure, she does have to do a bit of searching and a bit of protecting herself--those are needed plot elements in any revenge film--but more or less the movie was something akin to the mystical journey plot archetype. It even has a theme!!!
That's not to say you can't associate Lady Vengeance with the other two films in the Revenge Trilogy. Lady Vengeance has just as many memorable moments as the first two. Without spoiling much, I will say that the ending was possibly the best in all of the revenge films. It's a little more subtle, and leaves room for a lot of reflection on the viewer's part (it even has a theme!!!). Besides that, there are a couple moments between the beginning and the middle that will leave you chuckling at the screen. That's another thing that separates Lady Vengeance from the other two; it doesn't take itself as seriously. It doesn't mind throwing in some comedy, even if it offsets the suspense of the revenge-flick-archetype.
Now, I won't go much into the story. Revealing too much can ruin the experience. Simply read the synopsis on the case and that's all you should need. This movie does a lot of speaking for itself. It needs to be seen to be believed, and preferably after you've already seen Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy. By itself, Lady Vengeance is great, but as an epilogue to the Vengeance Trilogy, it proves that a) Park Chanwook is a director that should be followed, and b) these films truly are masterpieces of their genre.
I liked it.............2007-04-02
A woman imprisoned for 13 years for a crime she didn't commit is now released and looking for vengence....Simple enough plot. She tracks the man down through her network of friends she met in prison and eventually all her work pays off. Toward the end she takes him to an abandoned school along with the parents of the children he murdered. Every parent gets a turn at the man who murdered their children the only catch is they cannot kill him until each one has had their stab at him. They carefully lay out plastic and bring protective wear so they don't get blood everywhere...which was rather humorous. Very well done movie with great music.

Before he made the notorious cult hit Oldboy, South Korean director Chan-wook Park created Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, an equally gruesome yet elegant meditation on revenge. Desperate to get a kidney transplant for his dying sister, a deaf and dumb young man named Ryu (Ha-kyun Shin, Save the Green Planet!) kidnaps the daughter of a wealthy industrialist named Park (Kang-ho Song, Shiri). Despite Ryu's best intentions, things go horribly awry, setting in motion a series of escalating revenges--to describe the plot in more detail would undercut the movie, because much of its power comes from the spare and skillful storytelling. Chan-wook Park is careful to ground the audience in the characters' emotional lives; when the violence begins, the bloody events unfold with the hypnotic power of the revenge tragedies of the Shakespearean era, which had over-the-top plots and littered the stage with bodies, yet were full of rich poetry. Park's eye for startling images and careful editing creates a visual poetry, grotesque yet often haunting. Certainly not a film for everyone--squeamish viewers had best beware, while anyone who wants their violence flagrant and guilt-free will be disappointed--but cinephiles looking to have their hearts squeezed along with their stomachs will enjoy Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Unable to afford proper care for his sister dying from kidney failure, Ryu turns to the black market to sell his own organs only to end up cheated of his life savings. His girlfriend urges Ryu to kidnap the daughter of wealthy industrialist Dong-jin, who recently laid him off. Ryu agrees, but unforeseen tragedies turn an innocent con into a merciless quest for revenge. Bound by their personal losses and deep-seated anger, the two men are thrust into a spiral of destruction.
Customer Reviews:
First of Park Chan Wook's revenge trilogy gets some sympathy from me........2007-05-25
Of Park Chan Wook's revenge trilogy, I had to backtrack after being blown away by Oldboy. The first of the triptych is Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
With his dyed green hair, the deaf-mute Ryu seems to be a goofy-looking simpleton. He has an unrewarding job working day-in, day-out at a foundry, but given his condition, he can't be deafened by the factor clamour. However, he has a kind heart, saving up his money to save his sister, who desperately needs a kidney.
Ryu is desperate and takes matter into his hands by soliciting the help of organ traffickers, who offer him 2,000,000 won for one of his kidneys. However, he is cheated, left naked on the floor with an X-shaped scar on his side. Now broke and desperate, Yeong-mi, Ryu's strong-willed and smarter girlfriend, plot to kidnap Yusun, the eight-year old daughter of President Park Dong-jin, the head of the factory that fired Ryu. Yeong-mi's justification for it is simple. They will demand a ransom and return the kid when the money is handed over. Both sides win, as the bond between the family and the child will strengthen, and Ryu's sister will be saved. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned, leading to a series of deaths.
The team of Ryu and Yeong-Mi is one of the best things in the film. In one scene, Yeong-Mi tells a story of a man who thought he had two heads, leading Ryu to ask a question that's funny. And in a bedroom scene, she's on top, demonstrating she's the more powerful one. But she's also a romantic as well, telling Ryu that she knew they were destined for each other since the first time their eyes met.
What's sad about the vengeance in the film is that there is one death that was unintentional, albeit due to negligence. From there, the revenge that takes place makes one wonder, "Why did this have to happen?" One death is a senseless and cruel electrocuation, another recalls Julius Caesar and the Ides of March, and in another, the killer sadly tells the victim, "I know you're a good guy... but you know why I have to kill you..."
Song Kang-Ho (Park) also appears in Lady Vengeance as one of the two thugs who tries to kidnap Jennie, Lee Gum-ja's daughter and gets blasted. Ironically, he and Choi Min-Sik, also in LV, appeared together previously in the terrorist thriller Shiri as antagonists.
And I can't help liking Shin Ha-Kyun's performance as Ryu. Simple, a bit slow in the brain department, misguided perhaps, but likable, having to be guided by his girlfriend Cha.
And though I didn't know it, Vengeance was the third movie I'd seen Bae Du Na in, having previously seen her in the Korean version of the Ring and as the shy exchange student Son and girl band lead singer in Linda Linda Linda. As the leftist radical Cha Yeong-Mi, she is clearly the stronger personality between her and Ryu and she alone is worth watching this movie.
Oh Kwang-rok appears in all three of Park's revenge trilogy. He has a bit part at the end as one of the anarchists. In Oldboy, he plays the suicidal man with the small dog who sets off a car alarm by smashing down on it. And in Lady Vengeance, he plays the father of a murdered boy.
While this film has its merits, the stripped down Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance is overshadowed by the successors in the trilogy, lacking the style, oomph, and strong emotions of Oldboy and Lady Vengeance. What's well-demonstrated is Ryu's conditions of poverty, living in a squalid apartment with thin walls and desperation that leads him to go to the black market to sell one of his kidneys.
I liked it....................2007-04-25
It was a good revenge flick although I did like Oldboy and Lady Vengence alot better since they were a bit more twisted. Ryu tries to buy his sister a kidney but the sellers end up taking his money and his kidney and to top it all off he looses his job. He gets a call from the hospital that they have a kidney and he just needs the 10 million won however he no longer has it since he gave it to the organ thieves. His girlfriend comes up with a scheme to kidnap his exemployer's daughter and convinces Ryu to go along with it. Things go sour when Ryu's sister finds out and commits suicide, the girl ends up dying and the father is out for revenge.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.......2007-01-28
This movie is crazy. It is one of the Vengeance trillogy movies. This movie really impressed me. I already had high expectations for the movie, but this movie really brought it. Mr. Vengeance satisfied my expectations and then some. The majority of the people I showed this to really liked it. Some of the people I showed it liked it, but they weren't blown away like the rest of us. This is one of my favorite movies in my movie collection. It's a good flick.
This might test your patience but Parks film is worthy of your time.......2007-01-06
Asians excel at horror because, not having to pander to Hollywood's rules, they can take you anywhere at all. For all this filmed was billed as a gory horror, violence was minimal, and certainly not gratuitous, but man......it was good when it happened!
The film revolves around the lives of a deaf-mute and his sister who requires a kidney transplant. A kidnap attempt to raise money goes tragically wrong, and much blood-letting ensues. The ending makes me wince to this day. My only quandary with Park is that he holds certain scenes too long. He needs more discipline in the editing room. Green hair playing with the little girl for ten minutes or burying a body for another ten minutes while a very annoying device character and a mentally challenge kid of some sort wanders about causing mayhem, I started to look at my watch. It all comes together in a blood bath of revenge.
The performances all around were decent. I liked Du-Na-Bae and felt she was lively and interesting; Ha-kyun Shin also did well considering he had no lines to speak of. However Song was a mystery to me, he only had one moment (the one that I have already mentioned) where I felt he did something worthy of note, the rest of the time his was a non-performance. Aside from him, I think everyone was OK but that the material and the delivery just wasn't there to support them.
"Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" is a very interesting take on Korean revenge mythology and modern society. But what that take is I'm not sure. This one is necessary for film aficionados, just for the camera set-ups and stunning color. I also think that this film delivers an important message. To exact vengeance on someone because you are hurting only makes more people hurt, and it doesn't stop yours.
The Crazy Ones Are Always Wearing Jackets.......2006-12-28
Park Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy sure does give you a break from the normal film and it makes you appreciate Korean cinema. I saw Oldboy first and I was impressed and it is now one of my favorite films so initially I had to see the rest of the trilogy. First, if you are wondering what the violence is around I think it exceeds Oldboy a little and though most of the film can be comical or even sad at times the violent scenes has its moments. The film is about a deaf-mute man named Ryu who comes off as a gentle guy caring for his sweet sister who is in need of a kidney. Ryu has quits school and gets a job to care for her and though she is grateful she constantly reminds him not to let her become a burden to him but she is everything to him and he would never call her such a thing.
Ryu keeps trying to get the doctors to give his sister his kidney but he is not the correct blood type and he is out of ideas. He finds a number for black market organ dealers and they tell him that he must give them his kidney and $10 million won ($10,000) and he gladly gives them both. He wakes up in the middle of a building with a new scar and nobody in sight. When Ryu goes to the doctor the man tells him that they found a kidney but he has to pay $10 million won but he doesn't have it. This sets in a major amount of events from Ryu having to kidnap his boss's daughter to both the girl's father and Ryu going on killing sprees to get revenge on everyone that has done them wrong and basically they don't stop until they find each other.
This film is just like Oldboy in the sense that you can read all these reviews or the synopsis all day long and the entire time your thinking darn I wish I didn't read this because this just told me the entire story. You go on thinking the film is ruined because you know everything that is going to happen like you just read the beginning, middle, and end but trust me you haven't. All three of these films has a creative way of turning a person that thinks they know into a person that knows nothing and at the end you find yourself staring at the screen with a hanging jaw. Though I give Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance 5 stars I did have a couple of problems with. The biggest problem being that it moves to future events without making clear how or when something important happened in the film.
One example is when Ryu and his girlfriend are planning to kidnap his bosses daughter Ryu realizes that he can't do it because he was fired and he would be the first person the police call in but you never saw or heard Ryu get fired. Another example is after the scene where the two realize he can't kidnap the girl the film jumps to a scene where him, his sister, his girlfriend, and a little girl are playing in a park and your thinking who is that girl with them? The girl is later named the daughter if his ex boss but I for one would have like to have known some details like how they got the girl. Besides those few flaws the film is very impressive, I love the pace of the film though some people might find it to be slow at times. One heads up is to ignore the preview; I think there is one on the Oldboy DVD. The preview shows a crappy picture and is just overall a sucky preview that would turn more people off of it than attract them.

1. Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch vs. The Hardy Boyz for the World Tag Team Titles- This was an okay match but was no were near there last two matches together. For me I had already seen these two teams go at it so it was not watching anything new. Also just something was missing from this match. Nice to see Murdoch and Cade keep there titles. Winners and still World Tag Team Champs Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch. Match Rating 6.5/10.
2. Chavo Guerrero vs. Jimmy Wang Yang for the cruiserweight title- This was a decent match. I liked the way they did a tribute before the match for Eddie. This was another match that if it was the given enough time would be able to develop. Still I would say this was above the first match of the night. Just some high flying action and a couple of near falls. Winner and still crusierwieght champ Chavo Guerrero. Match Rating 7/10.
3. Jonny Nitro vs. CMP for the ECW Title- This was supposed to be Chris Beniot vs. CMP which was a dream match but Beniot could not be there cause of family issues so Nitro took his place. At first I was a little disappointed with this but the match acculaty started to go well. This involved some solid wrestling. Very good work by both men. Winner and new ECW Champ Jonny Nitro. Match Rating 7/10.
4. Santino Marreli vs. Umaga for the ITC Title- This was an absolute terriable match First off Santino needs to get better in the ring. Secondly what is the point of letting him hold the ITC Title if he is going to job to everyone every single time. I knew this was going to be a squash from the start but what made it worse was it ended in a DQ because Umaga did not break a 5 count. Skip this match. Winner and still ITC Champ Santino Marreli. Match Rating 1/10.
5. MVP vs. Rick Flair for the US title- This was another okay match. A couple of years ago I would have been excited for this match but it just seems that flair has lost a little bit of his step. This was just another solid wrestling amtch with a lot of old school wrestling by both MVP and Flair. Again more time could have done this match good because it was rushed. Winner and still US Champ MVP. Match Rating 6.5/10.
6. Duece and Domino vs. Sgt. Slaughter and Jimmy The Super Fly Snuka for the WWE Tag Team Titles- I was kind of looking forward to this match but it turned out to be a disaster. First off once we found out who the opponents were we knew that to 60 year olds were not winnig the match. Second the match was only 6 minutes long and it was just slow and boring. Not much to say but that. Winners and still WWE Tag Team champs Duece and Domino. Match Rating 2/10.
7. Edge of Batista for the World Heavywieght Title- Finally we get something good. I did not know if this was going to succeed but it did to a certain point. The beginng was contolled by Edge with just some solid wrestling which we have seen before but than they stepped it up. There cam all the near falls. Edge got DQ and long came out and restarted the match and I was almost possative Edge was going to lose the title. They fought back in the ring it broke to the outside and Batista hit a sick Batistia hit a sick Batistia bomb on the floor but ended getiing counted out because he rolled Edge in the ring first. My match of the night and not a bad one. Winner and Still WHC Edge. Match Rating 8.5/10.
8. Melina vs. Candice Michelle for the WWE Women's Title- Well here is yet another bad match. Now I was not expecting this to be good and it wasn't so I was not to surprised. Not much to say but good for Canidce to finally win the title but after that you can skip this one. Winner and new WWE Womens champ Candice Michelle. Match Rating 2/10.
9. John Cena vs. Mick Foley vs. Randy Orton vs. King Booker vs. Bobby Lashley for the WWE Title- This I was expecting to save the show but it didn't. Don't get me wrong this was not a bad match but it was to rushed and did not live up to the hype I had for it. There were some nice spots including some nice chair shots and a nice F-U through the table. Again at only 10 minutes long it was rushed and they could at least have added an extra 15 minutes considering the PPV is not supposed to end till 11 o clock. Once again Cena wins and it almost seems like its not worth watching anymore cause we already know who is going to win the match which sucks. Winner and still WWE champ John Cena. Match Rating 7/10.
Well that raps up another. I would give WWE vengeance 2007 a grade of 47.5/80 which is a 59% which means this is an awful ppv. Now in my opinion this PPV did nto live up to the hype to many matches and the bad ppv trend continues with wwe. Just to many matches and save your money on this dvd. If you can tell me if my review was helpful or not I would appreciate that. Thanks for your time.

Product Description
"A Bittersweet Life," starring Lee Byung-hun from "Everybody Has a Little Secret" and Shin Mina from "Madeleine," portrays the desperate and brutal revenge of Sun-woo (played by Lee) after he is expelled from his gang and comes close to being killed by his boss.
Lee Byung-hun is a hitman who falls for the girlfriend of his boss in the stylishly violent "A Bittersweet Life." Conventional ideas of causation are put into doubt in director Kim Jee-woon's twist on film noire. "A Bittersweet Life (Talkomhan Insaeng)" is what Korean critics are describing as 'Action Noire.' In it, he tweaks the traditional Korean gangster story line, presenting a work with film noire undertones and stylish cinematography.
Customer Reviews:
Bittersweet Review.......2007-07-04
This was a good movie with good acting. My only draw back was the excessive violence.I also wish the ending was different but for those who enjoy this type of drama go for it you will not be disappointed. As usual Lee Byung Hun was great.
Kim Ji-Woon just keeps getting better and better every time!.......2007-04-04
In the same vein as "Oldboy" comes "A Bittersweet Life," a movie so good it shocked me when watching it for the first time. It's a violent revenge movie with a gripping story with some fantastic actors such as Byung-hun Lee. He stars as Seon-woo, an enforcer for President Kang, a very dangerous man and if he wants to get rid of people, Seon-woo is the one taking care of it. The most interesting thing about this movie besides the story being so great is Seon-woo himself. The way Byung-hun Lee has captured the character sure tells that he's a great actor and what's keeping the movie alive from beginning to end. Seon-woo seem to know nothing about what it's like to have a "normal" life, as the world he lives in is only filled with evil and violence. He has a hard front, can be violent and nasty without remorse, but its fairly easy to see through all that and see that he has a gentle side as well, and that makes him interesting.
For instance with all the violence going on in the movie it sometimes seems like he has no conscience and couldn't care less about what happens to other people. His face is like stone with no expressions to reveal what he really feels, if anything. But at the same time you know that there's something more underneath it all, like when he's around the mistress you really get to see that there's more than one side to him, and that makes him a really likable character. Actually, the further the movie goes, the more likable he becomes and you can't help but feeling sorry for him which is a really effective part of the overall experience.
As reviewer K. Jones has put it, this movie does mixes violence and emotions in an excellent way, and even if the violence is a bit too brutal at times, you still have a lot of "nice" things to fall back on. There are a lot of action elements and the movie is quite stylish to say the least, but the most important thing is that it's not the least bit shallow and while its entertaining eye candy at times; you still really care about the characters and what's going on. This is easily one of the best Korean movies I've seen this year, and a movie that I will probably enjoy watching many times in the future. If you're a fan of "Oldboy," you're most likely to find "A Bittersweet Life" to be pretty sweet, both dealing with the concept of revenge but very different from each other. I also recommend "A Tale of Two Sisters" which is also fantastic.
A Bittersweet Life.......2007-04-01
This was a good movie but I did not like the end, it was maybe alittle confusing and it let open some questions of is this real or a dream.
His Life Really Is Bittersweet.......2007-03-30
I just can't get enough of these Korean revenge films because they're just so different and unique from your normal revenge plot. Now of course a film like this or one of the films from Park Chan-wook's "Vengeance trilogy" won't be appreciated by all simply because some may think they go to far with the amount of violence. It really depends on what your limit is but I had no problem with any of these films.
Sun-woo is a mob enforcer and a darn good one, as you'll see in the beginning. While eating desert in the restaurant he manages Sun-woo is alerted that there is a disturbance downstairs. Sun-woo quickly grabs someone (Min-gi) to help handle the situation. Three men are refusing to leave so Sun-woo tells them they have three seconds to leave and starts counting down. When he gets to 1 he tells Min-gi to lock the door. It's a little hard to explain what happens after the door is locked but let's just say Sun-woo handles the situation. Sun-woo has been working for his boss Kang for seven years and has not made a mistake in all those years but everyone makes a mistake at least once in their life. Being in the mob he knows that he can't mess up but what happens is something that he couldn't help.
Come to find out the three men Sun-woo beat up were men from a rival mob family. This was not Sun-woo's only problem; actually this situation only provides half of the story's plot. While avoiding to talk to the boss of the rival family Sun-woo is asked to do something important for his boss. Kang has a mistress (Hee-soo) and suspects that she is seeing another man. Because of the age difference Kang believes that she is tired of him and is seeing a younger man. He asks Sun-woo to watch her for three days while he is away on business. Not only does he have to watch her but also he has to drive her and basically be attached to her hip. If he does find that she is seeing someone else Sun-woo is to either call Kang or take care of it himself. Sun-woo starts to fall for the girl and when he finds that she was unfaithful he can't finish the job.
After all this Sun-woo is caught by the rival family and that's when the good stuff starts. The film just goes crazy, after a few events I won't tell cause I don't want to spoil the film but after them Sun-woo goes on a revenge spree. No matter how bad the pain gets Sun-woo refuses to say sorry or show any remorse for any of the things he's done. He won't stop until he sees the situation to the end and let me tell you he definitely does. For the rest of the film it gets very nasty and bloody for Sun-woo and the men that have wronged him.
I was amazed to see Lee Byung-Hun (Addicted, Everybody Has Secrets) in this film, he did great fight sequences and just an overall perfect performance. The acting in this film was great, very realistic and believable but not over the top. The settings and picture were beautiful, great camera work and very good sound quality. I liked that Sun-woo felt like a real person. At the end when he confronts everyone he seems like a person that has been very hurt and insulted over the reasons he's been attacked. I didn't really see any flaws in A Bittersweet Life but some people will for their own reasons, which I do understand. I do hope that nobody takes this film as trying to bite off of Chan-wook's trilogy because you'll miss out. It's definitely not as complex as the trilogy but at the same time it has its own style and feel to it. Anyone that just wants to see a good film with a simple plot then I definitely encourage you to see this.
solid action movie.......2007-03-05
This isn't going to win an award or anything, but action movies don't get that kind of recognition anyway. This is what I would call a smart action movie. There is good character development, coupled with action that isn't too over the top, killing any suspensed disbelief. I like Korean movies because there is usually an undeniable syle, and they tend to be darker than most american movies. This isn't the cream of the crop for Korean films, but it is entertaining and it does have substance.

I recommend any of the Vengeance dvds. They are always worth getting.
Smackdown's 1st and best PPV of all time........2007-05-22
Out of all Smacdown PPV have done til now, This is perhaps the best of all even No Mercy 2003. I only review my favorite matches. The U.S Championship Match between Benoit & Guerrero was am awesome opener. I think is even better than their previos match at Armageddon 2002 and One Night Stand 2005. The APA's Invitational is fun to watch. When Funaki got drunk and fell down, it was funny. It's just like a Hardcore Match. The WWE Tag Team Championship Match was another good one. With Rey & Kidman as a team. It's a perfect match of them two. and Benjamin always great in his matches included this one. Undertaker & John Cena match, I gotta give than a 5/5. These two put one hella of a match together then. They shall put them in a match now. Like Wrestlemania 23, should make Cena vs Taker for the WWE Championship. The Main Event is a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship. Kurt Angle make his return from neck surgery against Brock Lesnar &. This is another 5 star match. I think in my opinion is better than the 2002 Triple Threat Main Event.

Great 1st Ever PPV for SMACKDOWN!
1. Finals for the United States Championship
Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero
This was a great way to start off Smackdown's 1st PPV. It starts out slow but gets very fun to watch. Benoit and Eddie are both great wrestlers and this was a great match.
Winner: Eddie Guerrero 8/10
2. Jamie Noble vs. Billy Gunn w/ Torrie Wilson
This match was over Noble's obsessionabout Torrie being in Playboy. This was an alright match but Billy Gunn have had way better matches in the old WWF.
Winner: Jamie Noble 6/10
3. APA Invitational
This was an all out brawl a,d lots or current and old wrestlers are in this match. The APA are both left standing but Bradshaw is declared the winner.
Winner: Bradshaw 5/10
4. Tag Team Championship
Rey Mysterio & Billy Kidman vs. World's Greatest Tag Team (C)
Great match to follow up two not so great matches. Lots of high flying action and very fast paced. Great tag team match.
Winner: Haas & Benjamin 8/10
5. Cat Fight
Sable vs. Stephanie McMahon
Ok cat fight but Steph is certainly not a wrestler at all but Sable keeps this match watchable. A-Train comes out and help Sable to win.
Winner: Sable 3/10
6. Old School vs. New School
Undertaker vs. John Cena
This was actually a good and fought match and Taker really helps Cena look good in this match. Everything you expect from Taker in this match ther even is some blood from taker in this match but he comes back and win it.
Winner: Undertaker 8/10
7. Mr. McMahon vs. Zach Gowan
This match surprised me it was very entertaining and fun to watch. Zach pulls off a few nice moves and drop kicks a chair into Vince's face and then gets busted open. Fun to watch. ending was kinda predictable though.
Winner: Mr. McMahon 7/10
8. WWE Championship
Big Show vs. Brock Lesnar (C) vs. Kurt Angle
This was an awesome triple threat match wasn't the best but still great. Some trash cans come into play and Big Show gets Angle Slamed through the table. Big Show comes back chokeslams both Angle and Lesnar but Kurt comes back and delivers an Angle Slam on Brock to become a 4 time champion.
Winner: Kurt Angle 9/10
Overall Vengeance was great for being Smackdown's 1st ever ppv.
Matches to Watch: Triple Threat Match, Benoit/ Eddie/ Taker/Cena, Tag Team Title match, and maybe Vince/Zach match.

1. Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Beniot for the wwe is title- This was smackdowns first ppv and it did not dissapoint. I think this was a awsome way to kick off the show and it lived up to its hype. WIth just as little over 20 minutes of work here was bery steddy. WHen the next 12 was non stop action lots of near falls and just a ton of fun to watch even when there was interference. WInner and still wwe us champ eddie guerrero. mAtch RAting 8.5/10.
2. Jamie Noble vs. Billy gin in a proposal match- This was an okay match. In my opioiin i thinkt hat noble carried this match to make it better. I have never been a fan of gun essicapply when he was a face. Nice fast pace match and even though the storyline was dumb turned out ok. WInner Jamie Noble. mAtch RAting 6.5/10.
3. Apa invintaional bar room brawl- This one is very hard to explain. A little bar set had been built near the entrance ramp & basically wrestlers from the past & present (plus the Easter Bunny) fought there. Totally stupid, but all in good fun. A few cool spots, but nothing too noteworthy. 7 minutes to interview & introduce. 4 minutes to complete. Winner bradshaw. Match Rating 5.5/10.
4. Charlie Hass and shelton benjamine vs. Rey mysterio and billy kidman for the wwe tag team titles- If u look back at this match u will be like were the hell did the tga team divisons go on noth brands. I loved this match. This was given a good 15 minutes of what it was deserved. Both teams did an awsome job but i really liked shelton and hass te=am i thought they were the best tag team for a while. Great amtch. WInner and still wwe tag team champs Shelton and chairle hass. Match Rating 8.5/10.
5. Sable vs. STephine McMahoin- This was a horriable match. The one good thing i will say about this match was the women looked great> not much to say here. WInner Sable. MAtch RAting 3/10.
6. Undertaker vs. John Cena- This was an okay match. I think this could have been better but in my opion taker carried this match. HE dominted almost the whle match but than cena came back with some offense and even some blood in this match. Not bad lots of near falls. Winner Undertaker. MAtch Rating 7/10.
7. Vince McMahon vs. Zach Gowan- This was a wierd match. I liked the way they set this up with mcmahon as a huge heel but it did not work. This match was about 14 mninutes long which i think is a little to much. ALot of the match had vince work on the leg of zach. There was some fight in zach including a si
