Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop.
On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon

MASTERS OF PROPAGANDA..........2007-04-30
Patriot brings to the screen a fictitious story from the American Revolution, or else the director and his sponsors' version of what they would like the people to believe as historical fact.
A quiet farmer and veteran of the French and Indian Wars is "forced" into partaking in the American Revolution on the side of the Continentals as a result of a sadistic British Colonel...
The good things first:
1) The cast, the setting, the battle scenes, and the costumes are all very good.
2) The film does show (though sparsely) the pivotal role that France played during the War, without whom the Continentals would have been defeated.
3) The Tomahawk trophy off a fallen Indian warrior (subtly) insinuating the ghastly relations between colonists and the natives i.e. the traditional hatred between the lower class North American colonists and the Indians (not a surprise considering the content of the Declaration of Independence: "the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes, and conditions").
On the negative side now:
1) It's a biased, one-sided approach to a major historical event which one would think by now would be able to be presented in an objective manner. It's the same old/usual cliches involving one of Hollywood's favorite villains/scapegoats: the British (it must have been really difficult to include Germans, Serbs or Russians in this one...).
For starters, misusing the term Patriot in referring to Englishmen who betrayed their government, their country, and their flag, is reminiscent of the Soviet Union and how they christened their ultimate tool (newspaper) of propaganda Pravda, or "Truth."
Similarly, the British Colonel asked the Loyalist how he could betray his neighbors and not the other way around.
2) From the beginning, the setting is South Carolina and all that is heard throughout the film is either a British or a Northern (Yankee) accent!
3) South Carolina was home to most of the 13 colonies' Loyalists, even to the point of outnumbering the Continentals, yet all we saw was but a few.
4) At the time when the S.C. Assembly voted in favor of secession not a single Red Coat or a single Loyalist were in the vicinity! Not a single shot was fired...
5) There is no clarification that taxes set by the British Government are taxes set by King and Parliament, not King George III alone.
6) Throughout the film the Continentals are presented in good light while the Red Coats are demonized. Oh, I forgot; the British have to be the baddies while the Continentals are the heroes... Have mercy on us, please!
7) The movie does not really portray the double-crossing merchants, farmers, and politicians that supported whichever side the wind happened to be blowing in, always in search of profit and personal gain. Nor does it show the clash within the Continental side (the undermining, the personality clashes, favoritism, public relations, political connections), between Congress and the Army, as well as the farmers and most importantly the merchants profiteering at the expense of whoever/whichever side etc.
8) Martin's slaves were not slaves; they were "free men" working of their own will...
9) Does not show what the Continentals did to the Loyalists during and after the Revolution.
10) Blacks and Whites fighting together against the British was simply absurd for that era. What's more, the British policy, which was indeed to free the slaves from the colonists, is ridiculed in the movie...
In short, the film does a good job, as it should do, in presenting a case study on the use of propaganda on unaware people and the danger it poses.
If the American Revolution is what you had in mind, check out the AMAZING films Revolution starring Al Pacino and Donald Sutherland, and Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor starring Aidan Quinn and Kelsey Grammer.
In conclusion, the potential for a great movie was there. A shame really... 2 Stars
if you can muscle your way through the historical blunders you got a good movie.......2007-04-27
a very good movie about the creation of america.but the following are big blunders that make it not perfect.1. all of the men look away while firing ,this although was tought up to a piont, near the end of the war this was given up.2. the battle of the cowpens is very unaccurate such as the fact that no french took part in the battle(but its only based on the cowpens any way).3. all men march shoulder to shoulder , this was NOT tought by any side that late in the war.plus many other small things.overall its good put not accurate
Braveheart Redone.......2007-03-22
Yes, it was. Braveheart taken to a different century and country. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same movie. -Shrugs.- I think Mel has something against the English.
Oddly enough, the best part of this movie was the English, vilified character of Colonel William Tavington, played by one of my top two actors, Jason Isaacs. Isaacs has always been a phenomenal actor, and this time, I think, he saved this movie from flopping.
The coolest thing about this movie was Tavington's Green Dragoons... or was it his long silky brown hair... or was it his accent? Hmm. It's a little of everything, I think.
Anyway. Great movie for the sake of seeing Isaacs in another awesome role.
Gibson? Not so much. See Braveheart.
seen it many times.......2007-03-07
I've seen this movie enough times to know that i won't get tired of it easily. it's brutal enough to hold my attention during the fighting scenes while the rest of the storyline's plot doesn't let you go during the down time. I don't know and don't care if this movie was based on factual or fictional characters, so whether it is historically accurate is the last thing on my list of worries.
What i did like was how the protagonist maintained a reluctant stance until given no other choice. it felt real, and the reactions of all the other characters felt real as well; they didn't feel scripted. That is about the only concern i have with most of these past war movies and that's something i flushed away as soon as i started watching it the first time. one of my top movies of all time.
Bravo!.......2007-03-04
Love this film, it makes you laugh, cry and feel a lot of other emotions when viewing. Great performances by Heath Ledger and Mel Gibson. Beautiful countrysides are shown with epic battle scenes that test every man's last breath to truly fight for what they believe in. Fantastic and I give it five stars, it never loses value in repeated viewings for us.

Customer Reviews:
Good film.......2007-04-06
Thought this was a good film, but didn't have the regular action moves that I am custom to watching. Still a good film.
Really enjoyable Seagal movie.......2006-01-30
I liked this movie overall - Steven Seagal proved that he doesn't have to just use his martial arts skills to hold your attention. He did a really good job and the environmental message was timely too. Add that together with the beautiful scenery, good plot, and you end up with a very good movie. The ONLY down side I found was the casting of Gailard Sartain as the militia leader. I just can't see how this could be believable to anyone who ever saw him standing in the Hee Haw "cornfield" telling dumb jokes. Everytime he was on the screen all I could think about was Hee Haw (and I wasn't even a regular viewer of that program - he's just very recognizable). Other than that, I enjoyed the movie a lot.
Good Segal Film.......2005-11-21
The Patriot has beautiful Montana scenery, a medical thriller plot, but not enough martial arts and hand-to-hand combat. The story was better than I expected it to be. It was similar to a Tom Clancy movie. But the action was minimal.
Steven Segal plays a retired CIA immunologist who has opened up a small practice in cattle country. He is a widower with a half-Native American daughter. A militia extremist infects himself with a deadly contagion. Segal must battle militia men to find a cure before the plague spreads.
Segal spends too much time peering into test tubes in this movie, and not enough time kicking ass. Also, his daughter acts like, "See how cute I am?"
The movie stresses the importance of protecting the environment.
The Patriot.......2005-09-30
Excelent movie. To me is what of the best performance of Steven Seagal. I love it.
for a DTV not that bad but.......2005-05-05
The Patriot is Stevens first DTV. I can see why it was not in the movies, but that should not stop you from seeing this movie. The plot is basically Steven is a local doctor in the town and he is very respected. He has a daughter maybe between the ages of 8-10. They have a little farm with horses. Now a bad guy who seemed to me like an EX millitary agent or officer turned anti american. Before he helped creat a drug that could easily wipe out an entire town within hours and the stuff is VERY deadly! Well he figures if he is going to go down, then why not take as many people down with him as possible. He puts a couple of drops on his tongue and goes to court to face his sentence. He then spits on the judge and from then on the judge passes it on and so forth. Steven is not a police officer or millitary or anything. Just a very smart doctor. Now he is called into action when the bad guy excapes from jail and goes to the hopsital and basically hold the place hostage until a cure can be found. and yes he does want it for himself and his soldiers. From then on the story happens and comes to an end. From what I said above in the short summary there is more detail, im just going to let you watch the movie.
The acting is good to me. Steven has some funny one liners here and there. And the bad guy makes a beleivable bad guy. Not just some pethetic looser who trys to be scary but fails. The supporting cast is good. Because this is a Steven Seagal film im sure EVERYONE is wanting to see some good action because he is still in shape here. You might be dissapointed. Out of 90 minutes, I would say about 10 mins of action. But I must say for the 10 mins of action it is descent enough to make you smile. The ending to me was not good at all. It seemed to "NICE" to me. But hey they all cant be good. The Patriot is Rated "R" for Strong Violence and Language. Keep in mind that this is a DTV and not a theatrical release. With that in mind, ENJOY!

Description
What happens when the Governor of Idaho decides to close his state borders to fight a wave of immigrants, but is caught up in a stormy love affair with his fiery Hispanic news reporter mistress? The answer may well be the start of THE SECOND CIVIL WAR.
Customer Reviews:
Funny yet disturbingly realistic look at our future........2007-05-14
A funny, yet all to realistic look at America's immigration policy debacle. With the country over run by millions of recent immigrants, many of which whom can't speak english, the nation heads for an uncertain future. Leading the counter charge against mass immigration is a state governor whose attention is not on the nations problem, but instead on his estranged hispanic reporter mistress.
Unbelievable HBO Movie!!!.......2006-04-30
Starts off funny, moves to hilarious and end up very disturbing. An incredible stellar cast. Made in 1997 and for a number of years HBO has pretended it never heard of this film and it is not for sale (today) in the HBO store. It was once sold for a very short time on laser disk and vhs. Then it was pulled and denied. Suddenly it has surfaced on dvd. I figure I'd grab a copy on dvd before it disappears again.
Excellent movie - well crafted and definitely not 'politically correct'.
Smart sharp political satire.......2006-03-11
HBO films comes through again with this biting farce on the melting pot that is America. In the "near future", the governor of Idaho (Beau Bridges), a right winger if ever there was one, closes the state borders to prevent a few busloads of orphaned Pakistani children from settling in his home state. Soon the President (Phil Hartman in one of his few effective screen roles) consults with his spin doctor (James Coburn) to decide what to do. Meanwhile, the Idaho governor is carrying on a torrid affair with a beautiful news reporter from NewsNet, which is reporting all this. NewsNet is the home of news director Dan Hedaya, anchorwoman Joanna Cassidy, veteran reporter James Earl Jones, wiseass reporter Denis Leary, and hotshot camerman Dick Miller (yes, the GREAT Dick Miller of Buckets of Blood fame), as well as news executive Roger Corman (gee, how did HE get in there?).
Well, I'll tell you how he got in there. The film is directed by Joe Dante, and Dante got his start working for Corman's New World Cinema. So he returned the favor and cast Corman in this film. Surrounding the president, aside from Coburn, are advisers and/or secretaries of state and defense William Schallert and Kevin McCarthy (yes, of Invasion of the Body Snatchers).
Of course the irony of the reporter with whom the Idaho gov is having an affair being Mexican-American (Elizabeth Pens) is part of the gallows humor glee on display. JE Jones provides the voice of heart and conscience for the proceedings, and in fact, it's his voice that ends this tragicomedy. And make no mistake, tragicomedy it is. Not, mind you, in the tradition of Shakespeare and/or the like, but nevertheless, well done anyway.
There's a great back and forth between Jerry Hardin as the military leader of the National Guardsmen defending the Idaho border, and Brian Keith as the US Amry general sent in to fight the state National Guard and get those kids into Idaho by any means necessary.
The script is sharp and biting and ultimately, tragedy does ensue. But getting there is a lot of fun; you wait to see what witty slashing lines will crop up next. Dante does a good job of carrying the ball and running with it here; as of 1997, when this was made, you can tell he's still got it.
OK, this is not a great film. But the political satire is trenchant--especially, for example, when the governor of Rhode Island, a Chinese-American man, complains about thousands of Chinese landing in his home state. He decides not to let anymore Chinese into RI. So much for the unity of a people.
Much better than you might expect, this actually works well. A tightly scripted, well done piece of work.

A trip into the perilous state of Chiapas in southern Mexico is taken in this documentary, which focuses on the Zapatista National Liberation Army and its mysterious leader, Subcomandante Marcos. The narration notes that The New York Times has referred to the struggle of the Zapatistas as the "world's first postmodern revolution," and there is a remarkably surreal air at times. At one point Subcomandante Marcos is filmed while posing for the French fashion magazine Marie Claire, yet there can be no denying that the residents he champions are extremely poor. The interviews with farmers who fear they will be murdered by government troops are moving, and a press conference in which tape recordings of death threats are played is disturbing. The film's director, Nettie Wild, has a definite point of view and notes stoically that a memo from American bankers may have inspired the violence directed against the local rebels by the Mexican government. The background of the rebellion in Chiapas is told concisely with most of the film consisting of atmospheric footage showing life in the troubled and violent region. The film crew was itself threatened by right-wing paramilitary death squads, and the paranoia that is an asset in such an environment is tensely translated via filmed encounters with government troops. --Robert J. McNamara
Description
On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista National Liberation Army--made up of impoverished Mayan Indians from the state of Chiapas--took over five towns and 500 ranches in southern Mexico. The government deployed its troops, and at least 145 people died in the ensuing battle. Fighting for indigenous Mexicans to regain control over their lives and the land, the Zapatistas and their charismatic leader, guerilla poet Subcomandante Marcos, began sending their message to the world via the Internet. The result was what THE NEW YORK TIMES called "the world's first postmodern revolution." Years into the uprising, filmmaker Nettie Wild traveled to the jungle canyons of southern Mexico to film the elusive and fragile life of the rebellion. Her camera effectively and movingly captures the personal stories behind a very public clash of traditional culture and globalization.

Enjoyable and informative..........2006-11-24
I enjoyed this film and the attempt of the producer to present both sides of this conflict. It is always difficult to present an unbiased view of a conflict, especially when you are a sympathizer of the Zapatistas. For an introduction to this conflict I find myself more educated on the issue and I am glad I watched the film.
Not bad but could have been better..........2002-04-03
This video is for everyone: hardcore supporters of the Zapatistas and for those who know next to nothing on the struggle. It details the history and cause of the uprising in Chiapas but leaves much out of Marcos' personality. If you'd like to know more of his agenda you'd be better off reading his speeches in the internet. I also liked the way the documentary depicts the culture of those living in Chiapas.
A too gringo vision of Chiapas.......2001-05-26
I saw this movie without previous warning, following the advice of intellectuals' reviews seemingly to the left of US political arena. I can only admire the camera of Netie Wild's. The best part of this documentary is undoubtly the photography, to which Chiapas geography and people contributed generously. Most of the interviews are well-conducted and some just missed the point entirely. In some passages of the film, the title of this review becomes embrassingly obvious. Wild demonstrates why in Latin America many social movements don't often trust pseudo-progressive artists and intellectuals. In her unsuccessful effort to surgically separate the armed movement from the communities, Wild's film becomes amateurish. For instance, she forces the script to describe the Zapatistas as cold-hearted when dealing with the displaced communities from Tila, after attacks from paramilitary groups. In her efforts, she provokes the Zapatistas into turning untrustful of hers. No wonder! Nobody who has been into Zapatistas communities in Chiapas could believe this side of Wild's story. In the end she forces herself into pretending to be an "objective" observer, while in a few parts of the movie you can see she really loses her coolness in front of the camera. In the end, this is a barely accurate vision of Chiapas, told by a typical USian (born in the US, "Americans" are all those born in the Americas) with a mentality of a charity tourist.
A Place Called Chiapas.......2000-12-08
This film serves as an excellent presentation in summarizing the Chiapas plight. While it has been criticized, which I don't believe is justified, Wild and team weaves factual events - regardless of your viewpoint - to provide a unique perspective. Chiapas is closer than you think and while Mexico shares in this predicament, it is a real problem as oppressed people eventually gain the courage to say Basta!!!
An informing documentary about the Zapatista uprising.......2000-11-01
I found this documentary to be essential to my understanding of the indigent peoples' movement for independence and recognition in Chiapas and other parts of Mexico, under the leadership of Subcomandante Marcos. I really think that Nettie Wild did a great job of making this documentary. Although she is a zapatista sympathizer like most of us, she was very brave in showing the other side. There was a part where the rich ranchers told how the Zapatistas had taken their land. However, it was hard to feel bad for them when they were sitting in a very nice parlor with nice clothes, food, and educated manners, and the children, adults, and elderly of Chiapas are accurately pictured as almost naked, starving, homeless, terribly undereducated, etc. Although it is hard to agree with everything Marcos says and does, there is no doubt he is a brave and good human being and this film captures both parts of him - the actor who knows how to play the media just like his readers to get what he wants, as well as the human and indigent rights champion who is fighting for an awesome cause - very well. It contains exclusive interviews with him and many other leaders in the movement, as well as some heart-breaking interviews with the people of Chiapas themselves. It is important to the understanding of the situation in Chiapas, just as much as Marcos' book "Shadows of Tender Fury" and other correspondence by him is. If you want an accurate and moving look at the problems in Chiapas, this film is a must to watch. I recommend finding a library to rent it from as I did or waiting until the price goes down, but if you have the money now it is worth it, because this documentary is invaluable in its originality, source of information, and inspiration.

a disorganized 'Militia'..........2007-05-28
MILITIA (2000)
directed by Jim Wynorski
approx. 90 minutes
This is a pretty silly look at the militia movement from the perspective of an "undercover" Federal sniper.
Former TV Superman Dean Cain attempts to infiltrate a big bad militia with the help of a anti-government dissident William Fain (played by Frederic Forrest*) who wants whats best for his family. 'FLASHDANCE' star Jennifer Beals is in for the ride to help Mr. Sniper monitor the group. Stacey Keach plays a G.Gordon Liddy type radio personality who it turns out is "more than a sympathizer". Perhaps the only worthwhile segments of this movie are the dialogue between the agent and Fain, debating the government's hamfisted handling of past incidents. Cain's character is meant to show the "human" side of the Federals who wants to minimize damage but still believes in the occasional forced disarmament.
There are no big surprises here: the militia are mostly shown to be semi-literate, violent goons and the Federals, while perhaps overly assertive, are right to use deadly force against the citizenry. It is also true that some of the footage is lifted directly from other well known movies, including 'DELTA FORCE II' and 'T2: JUDGEMENT DAY'. What's strange about this movie is that it was one of director Jim Wynorski's few attempts to produce a movie with social content. He is better known for low grade sexuality movies such as 'THE BARE WENCH PROJECT' and 'BUSTY COPS'.
The "slant" of this movie will not surprise anyone familiar with the real tragedies it exploits and the media's treatment of 2nd Amendment issues.
*-The casting of Frederic Forrest as Fain may be to reference to his extremist Army surplus store owner character in 'FALLING DOWN'.
lovemovies.......2005-08-03
I liked this movie. Good action, good story, Dean Cain and his gorgeous self. Liked the banter between Dean and Jennifer Beal. Cute interaction. Lots of interesting twists in the story. Recommend it.
Blatant Propaganda.......2005-07-25
I happened to catch this recently on FOX during a hot, sleepless summer night, at about 2:30 in the morning. I was briskly flipping through the channels when I heard Stacey Keach's character in the movie mention the New World Order.
In this move, Dean Cain plays the role of a BATF agent who infiltrates a Right-wing militia group plotting to destroy a city with biological-containing missiles.
Of course the militia men are portrayed as evil monsters with no heart or soul, while the government are angels sent from the heavens to protect us from these gun-toting rednecks who hate the government.
Movies like this are intended to marginalize and stereotype -- in this case the US Patriot Movement. Most people in this movement, and other militia moverments, for the most part, are not bad people. Most of them love their country and believe in the preservation of the Constitution. This means the right to own guns.
Movies like this attempt to paint gun owners, and others who believe in the Constitution as being dangerous criminals out to bring this country down.
This movie was pure propaganda, and I wouldn't be surprised if the BATF themselves were involved in writing the plot to this ridiculous excuse for a movie.
Unforgivable.......2004-03-07
Fifteen minutes hadn't passed during this movie before I stopped watching. Aside from being one of those movies you know they write the scripts for in five minutes, I was shocked to find scenes STOLEN directly from Terminator 2, with simply a change of characters and music. It doesn't matter if they were given permission to or not, such a lack of effort and creativity deserves no merit. Do not even watch.
Typical bad movie.......2004-02-08
It's too obvious when they switch from pre-recorded footage from other sources to their own lame scenes. The plot completely lacks creativity (uh oh, bad guys have missiles, hero has to go stop them from launching). I don't mind action movies that use a recycled plot of they do a good job of it, but this movie has none of its own style, just a low-budget movie you would expect to be a cable network original or something like that.
The only thing they added to a generic script was a brief rant by Dean Cain about how the milita nuts are afraid of the ATF (losely quoted) "breaking into their house and taking their guns." Newsflash Mr. Cain: that's EXACTLY what the ATF does, unless maybe they break in to take your alcohol or tobacco. If he wanted to make an anti-militia statement, doing it from the mouth of an ATF agent isn't the most convincing method.
