A Mixed Season.......2007-07-03
I'm a huge Miami Vice fan and I think season 5 was an improvement over season 4.I have to admit the first two episodes where Crockett has become Burnette was very interesting and they could've played out the story for another episode or two,I think it would've been cool to see Crockett actually complete his plan to take over and eventually Vice would bust him and then he would have remembered who he really is,instead the writers decide to do a complete U-Turn and the next thing you know he's back as Crockett.Honestly though, the moment in "Redemption in Blood" when Burnett/Crockett casually walks into the Police station and everyone draws their gun on him was one of the greatest moments in TV history,I totally wasn't expecting that and I was glued to the TV during that moment. It's obvious though as you watch the rest of the season that the show was falling apart and needed to end.I mean, there's a couple of episodes without Crockett, one or two without Tubbs and several back to back without Castillo, who was my favorite character. The strangest episode though was "Leap of Faith" which was an entire episode with a whole different cast,I mean,WTF?If this had been decided to be the last season why not dedicate yourself as writers and actors to making it the best season you possibly could. There was some good episodes toward the beginning of the season and then it just went off the rails, until the end episode "Freefall".This was a terrific episode and while watching this I had to think to myself,God,why couldn't the writers and actors put forth this much effort to make more episodes this thrilling and well written and directed, what a shame.I must admit I had very mixed feelings about the way it ended. For instance, there was no formal goodbyes said to to Trudy,Gina,or Swytech. And as great of an actor and character Castillo was they could've had a truly great emotional moment with Castillo,Crockett, and Tubbs expressing their respects for Castillo and vice versa. That seemed like the honorable thing to do for the character of Castillo and the fans. And the last scene where Crockett and Tubbs shake hands was way too short and weak.I mean cmon, all they say to each other is I'm going to miss you and briefly shake hands and that's it.These guys were like brothers and for the respect of the show and for the fans that scene should've been longer and more emotional than that. After all the great dramatic greatly written scenes of dialog from these two over the previous seasons(especially from Crockett),it just seemed that the ending scene was less than satisfying.Either way though,I was actually saddened to watch the end.
Good time to call it a day.......2007-06-05
This was an unbalanced season but still contained the emotional content I liked. I still would watch this season before I'd watch about all the stuff on tv nowadays. The blend of music and imagery was still there. Jan Hammer missing was a bit of a bummer but they still managed to use quite provocative music most of the time. I used to think season 4 was weak but after watching it now after a long time I found it way better than I remember... hopefully season 5 gives me the same!
Miami Vice Rocked and Rocks ON!.......2007-05-30
I didn't have to comment with anyone of the comments made about Miami Vice. MIAMI VICE is what it is, ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, THE BOMB, SONNY & TUBBS MADE SURE THAT WE WERE IN FRONT OF OUR TV's BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE WENT ON IN OUR LIVES ON "THEIR NIGHT." THE MUSIC WAS ON, SONNY WAS ON, CASTILLO WAS ON, RICARDO or RAPHAEL WAS ON & TRUDY (THE ORIGINAL MISS BIG BOOTY, read her name plate on her desk BigBootyTrudy) WAS ON and I don't say that to BE sexist to this critique, if you will...I am a very married straight woman and if I wasn't, SO WHAT! It is what it is! It's just true and I don't want to forget Gina who was always ON also. Miami Vice is the best thing that ever happened to television. The movie made with the WANNABEES portraying CROCKETT AND TUBBS WAS A SHAME! I HATED IT AND HAD NO INTENTION TO SEE IT, HOWEVER I WAS TRICKED BY MY HUBBY AND ASSOCIATES. It would have been nice to see the older Crockett and Tubbs handle the intrigue they wanted or should I say they tried to portray in the different situations in the movie however, they didn't ask fans of the the TV series what we thought and it was TERRIBLE!! If it wasn't one of a kind then special Television Shows, Movies, Innovative shows from the past would not exist in TVLAND, etc. If it wasn't one of a kind it would not be on at least 5 to 7 different channels at different times everyday of the week. I am thankful we can buy our DVD's and watch them anytime we wish. I look forward to the fifth season and I'll embrace it as if it were brand new. It's so good we have something to look forward to with the DVD's because everything on TV now that is even close to the Miami Vice format is a rip off of Vice. Watch very close, very close and you will see that Sonny and Ricco had already been there. SORRY, it is what it is and it's TRUTH. DON'T YOU MISS THE MUSIC. ROCK ON MIAMI VICE, ROCK ON FOREVER!!!!! Think about it isn't this why they have TV LAND? TV LAND is for classic television right. THERE IS ALWAYS GROUND-BREAKING TV. SEE YA OFTEN MIAMI VICE, YOU BROKE THE GROUND. I LOVE YOU ALL 4EVER! IT MEANT EVEN MORE TO THOSE OF US WHO WERE STATIONED OVERSEAS, SERVING IN THE U.S. MILITARY AT THE TIME IT CAME OUT, WE MAY HAVE STARTED WATCHING MIAMI VICE 1 1/2 to 2 years late but it was well worth it. WE HAD MIAMI VICE GET TOGETHERS, PIZZA NIGHTS, PARTIES, ETC. AND WE THANK SONNY, RICO, CASTILLO, ETC. FOR MAKING A WHOLE LOT OF OUR FAMILIES GOOD & FUN TIMES HAPPEN, THANKS AGAIN!!!! P.S. LOVED YOU TOO NASH BRIDGES, BRING IT ON! MAYBE TV SHOWS COULD TAKE ANOTHER HINT AND PLAY SOME DECENT MUSIC TO YOUR DRAMAS YOU HAVE ON NOW. MAYBE I'D WATCH..GOOD LUCK!!
SHOULD I DEFINE ON: ON IS ON TIME, ON BOARD, ON MY TV, ON IS COOL, ON IS THE BOMB, ON IS WHAT'S HAPPENING, ON IS SOLID, ON IS FUN, ON IS INTERESTING, ON MAKES YOU THINK, ON MAKES YOU NOT MISS AN EPISODE, ON IS THAT MIAMI VICE WAS THE BEST TV AND PURPLE RAIN WAS THE BEST MOVIE, ON IS HOT AND ON IS IF YOU WANT TO SEND A LOT OF NEGATIVE COMMENTS TO ME, SAY I'M CRAZY, SAY IM OUT THERE, GO AHEAD. I COULD CARE LESS. I'M ON AS YOU READ THIS...HAHAHA.
WITH ALL SINCERITY,

Before Elvis there was nothing, and after Vice there has been not much either.......2007-05-24
John Lennon said that before Elvis there was nothing. Of course, apart from a lot of teengroups, this was quite accurate. I would dare to say that after Vice there has been nothing on tv that could equal, let alone surpass it.
I do NOT agree with reviewers saying that Vice "overstayed it's welcome by becoming a trendfollower after having been a trendsetter in earlier seasons."
It is true that indeed, as a reviewer so eloquently put it, "the mood and feel of the show had shifted away from the pop-electric neon atmosphere of earlier seasons to a darker and edgier tone beginning with the two-part conclusion to the season four cliffhanger "Mirror Image" that ended with Sonny, believing that he is his undercover persona Burnett after suffering total amnesia in a boat explosion, races off in a speedboat after killing an undercover detective."
Of course when Vice as a series progressed in tv time, so did the real decade that Vice was all about (or to use a chiasm; were the 80s about Miami Vice just as well?). The glamour of the earlier part faded away as the 90's with grunge music and a more negative feel were slowly emerging. It might have been a reaction to the glamour of the 80's as is often the case; decades that follow eachother are often like waves. Times do change all the time and so did Vice. Not surprisingly in the 90s and therefore of course the latter part of the 80's (albeit more invisible) the atmosphere would have to reflect somehow in the episodes of Vice as well, and it justly did.
Yes, even Sonny changed to stonewashed jeans and I think it was cool, since it was fitting. I think by then his character and the rest of the world had seen almost every pastel Versace blazer ever made by then, so this more down to earth look still gave a cool answer to the question `what could have been cooler than Sonny in silk blazers?'Well, how about Sonny in jeans? Think of it this way: would it have been fitting, or would it have been almost ridiculous, to have shot season 4 and 5 in the same playful atmosphere as the first three? Come on, Jan Hammer had great soundtracksongs, but the music still continued it's quality. Gloomier atmosphere, gloomier music indeed, but it still was great music, even today, that fitted the shows themselves.
Maybe the reviewers, including myself, cannot get to terms with the fact that in time generations become less and less naive, or in other words, the world becomes more realistic. Something's gained, something's lost. The price for living in more no nonsense times like now is the loss of idealism. The fun in earlier seasons, with Sonny and Crockett making jokes in happy Florida was lost, but what was gained was a good timing in shifting the mood. Vice rightfully adapted to newer days without being trendfollowers and that clearly showed in the last seasons. What was gained as well was more excitement and action in the series, and I don't see how reviewers saw this as superficial or Vice becoming trendfollowers instead of trendsetters. Still even then, there was no better copshow or thrill than Vice.
The moodshift to more serious stuff to me was also that it seemed to act as a realistic mirror of the hopelessness of fighting the drug force, which it still is to this day. I mean, after so many seasons of fighting the 'vice', what did it amount to? A new episode with a new crime to fight. It had to end, or, the 'ennui' had to be shown in the series, as every good series develops, just like any story plot. It might be true the cast was, as reviewers said, 'riding things out' and things were coming to an end. Exactly, and fortunately this same development, or ennui, which reflected in the series themselves was fitting. Drugs is still impossible to fight, and cops like Sonny and Crockett that did their best in more than 100 episodes were likely to have become burne"tt" out. Vice had to end, the only question how.
Atmittedly, especially in the last season it spiralled alsmost to the absurdly cool, with enormous white empty villa's and drugbosses in clothes that would make a video of Bryan Ferry look like the clip of 'cotton eyed joe'.
Sonny and Tubbs indeed became more abstract themselves in this weird atmosphere. Some call this 'one dimensional', but the first three seasons had shown enough introspection of the characters I think. And how about Sonny loosing his wife? That was a character-driven plot to me. Overall, the action, the acting and the music (although changed in style) still gave the series that extra over any other tv series at the time. Ok, it had become decadent, but all good things spiral out of control, especially the unforgettable stuff.
I simply thought Vice, and especially the last season was the best stuff our generation had the privilige to see in it's day when it was still new, with the Burnett episodes shot in eerie night blue, his revenge on the killer of his wife and of course the indeed very emotional end. When Sonny drove off in his white car after shaking so shortly the hand of his partner, not only the 80s were lost forever, but also the best show that has ever aired and it would not have been as good as it was without this season. I would like to steal a quote from the booklet of the Stones 2CD 40 Licks by saying: thanks (Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, Michael Mann) for touching our lives. Although people might say it was only tv, on some very rare occasions, tv transcends itself and defines a definite period in time. Vice did! Even though watching it now will never get you back to times lost, still...go for it!
Where was Don Johnson?.......2007-05-19
Dont Get me wrong, Miami vice is my ALL TIME FAV SHOW. Even though season 5 took a werid turn, just like 4, i still enjoy the mystery and mystque of the show. I really enjoyed seeing don playing a heel in the last episode of season 4 and early in season 5. He plays the bad guys well and you could sense through all the previous seasons that it was eventually going to happen. But when he came back to crockett, what the hell happend? The next episode Heart of Night, only featured don, in a 3 min scene and was never seen again in the episode? How the hell can you have a very climatic 3 shows about our hero going bad and then the next episode deal with a personal issue involving Castillo? It doesnt make sense? Why didnt they go into a major investigation, or at least a trial? But all we see is a 5 min tounge lashing in episode 4 Bad Timing? Then in Borrasca Don isnt even written in? Then to make matters worse "Line of Fire" (which happens to be a great episode) It seems like sonny never went bad and we forget he ever killed anybody? all in all a near poor season. But what saves it from a 2 to a 3 is the stand out episodes, Lost Madonna, and Freefall. My 2 fav episodes of the post 87 year! I dont understand why most of the episodes, don wanst in them? I wonder if there was tension between Don and the shows writers. If you own all 4 seasons then you must get this to complete the collection, cause the 2 hr finale is incredible, but dont buy this unless your a true fan of miami vice.

No competetion when MIAMI VICE is in... It has always been and will always be my most favourite TV Show. "A Must Buy" for any TV Series Collectors...
Miami Vice - Season 3.......2007-05-09
Awesome addition to my collection!!!!!!!!! Worth purchasing and highly recommended. Fast shipping from Amazom --- very pleased with this company.
Best Season.......2007-04-25
This is Miami Vice's best season - at least to me. The stars, music and Testerosa all come to together for insiteful and consistent episodes each week. And I appreciate the improved packaging so I don't have to flip DVD's to watch more. Any Vice fan needs Season 3.
A Flawless season!.......2007-04-16
I am new with this show since I never watched it in the 80's since I was pretty young. I bought the first 2 seasons and I thought they were cool and sexy but didn't make me say "that was awesome". They were sometimes cool yet cheesey. This season however is 100% cool with great stories, great drama and top notch car chases and shoot-outs. There's even so many appearances by well known actors that it's hard to list them all.
You have Wesley Snipes as a pimp, Bill Paxton as an undercover cop, Helen Bohen Carter as a doctor Crockett is dating who just happens to do drugs behind his back, Steve Buscemi, Charles S. Dutton, Willy Nelson, Liam Neeson, Viggo Mortensen, Benicio Del Toro and Brad Dourif. There's also drama when a member of their team dies. Larry is killed by boxing promoters while undercover as a boxer/trainer and it's made to look like a drug overdose. Crockett and Tubbs have to clear his name so he's not remembered as a junky. Forget the new movie, it's lame and dead in the water next to how entertaining and well done the show is.
Down for the Count Part 1: Best Episode of the Series.......2007-04-13
This was the season I was waiting for it has the best episode of the series. Down for the Count Part 1 is my favorite episode. It has some of the best music and fine acting by John Diehl. He's the heart and soul of the episode. I highly recommend getting this season.

Two and a half really.......2007-05-20
Just finished watching Season 4, I hadn't watched it since, well, the 80's early 90's...[...] And yes, "Mirror Image" is a great ep too, but a bit over the top and silly. I am glad I have it in my collection, but I don't know if I would ever let anyone watch most of it.
Contempt Of Court **1/2
By scaring the jury into mistrial, a mobster hopes to buy the time he needs to find the witness Crockett is protecting
Amen...Send Money *
The full fury of feuding TV evangelists hits Tubbs during his investigation of them when he is accused of raping a parishoner. Features Ben STiller in an early role.
Death & The Lady ***1/2
An actress' on-screen murder propels Crockett & Tubbs to investigate the film's flaky director -Perhaps my fave ep of the season
The Big Thaw *
Two factions fight for possession of dead reggae superstar's body -Pitiful...
Child's Play ***
Crockett agonizes over his shooting of a child during weapons investigation
God's Work **1/2
The return home of a kingpin's financial wizard son sets off speculation as to why in the Miami underworld - Not a bad ep, has a preachy "I'm gay" afterschool special scene thay feels VERY much out of place.
Missing Hours 1/2 star
A man's body disappeas from the morgue; Trudy has an encounter with UFOs
Like A Hurricane **
Crockett reluctantly agrees to guard a recording star who is a key witness in a payola scandal, and they end up falling in love.-Humorous...not so sure that's a good thing
The Rising Sun of Death **
The murder of an executive alerts Castillo to Yakuza presence in Miami, and the arrival of a Japanese investigator is no help
Love at First Sight ***
Newlywed Caitlin fears Sonny's new undercover assignment at a dating service will make her a widow -Interesting change of pace for the show, not a classic, but definitely one of the better eps of this season.
Rock And A Hard Place **1/2
Two music executives try to ruin Caitlin's comeback by exposing Sonny as a drug kingpin - ANother interesting attempt at change. Takes a good look at the problems of undercover life. But man, Sheena can't act!!!
The Cows of October *
A cowboy's larcenous attempt to improve his cattle attracts attention from the US government, Cuban Communists, and Izzy - Dreadful!!!
Vote of Confidence **1/2
A prominent senatorial candidate is arrested during a raid of a mobile whorehouse. _Not bad....not great...but watchable.
Baseballs of Death ***
Crockett & Tubbs suspect a Chilean police chief in a double murder. Decent ep....
Indian Wars **
Tubbs empathizes with American Indian zealots trying save their homeland. -SNORE
Honor Among Thieves? ***
Crockett & Tubbs discover the identity of a serial killer, but fear that trying to bring him in will blow their covers in a separate operation. I liked this episode, quite cheesy at times, but again, better than most of the season.
Hell Hath No Fury **
The highly publicized release of a convicted rapist causes Trudy to fear that the man's victim may have revenge on her mind. -Snore...whats with the bad 80's horror movie synth strings?
Badge of Dishonor **
When a string of murders is linked to a rival unit, Crockett & Tubbs believe an undercover officer may be the killer- Another bore, but does feature one of my favorite 80's songs, Payolas "Eyes of a Stranger"
Blood & Roses ***
The mobster who killed Sonny's friend is freed from prison. Yeah, boring...but at least it is not ridiculous like most of the season
A Bullet for Crockett 1/2 star
Members of the vice squad reminisce and hope for the best as Sonny lies near death from a gunshot wound
Deliver Us From Evil ***1/2
A murder that hits close to home reunites Sonny with the man who used him to trick his way off Death Row. Part 2 of one of my favorite MV eps from season 3, glad to see Crockett get his revenge.
Mirror Image ***1/2
A concussion from an accident while undercover during leaves Crockett believing he is drug-dealer Sonny Burnett, and he goes to work for a Colombian crime boss

Not exactly Crockett and Tubbs at their finest but it all pays off in the end, pal........2007-04-29
It's interesting to note that Season 4 suffers from the misfortune of having occurred after most of the original writers and producers for the show, including creators Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann, had long-since bailed and freelance writers were brought in to write for the show, most of whom had probably not even seen an episode of Miami Vice and had no clue how to write for the series cast. The result is an unforgiveably mixed bag of erratic episodes that are all over the map. The season opener "Contempt of Court" features great performances by Stanley Tucci and Meg Foster but it feels more like a mid-season filler episode than an explosive opener compared to Season 3's "When Irish Eyes Are Crying" but nonetheless gets the season off to an awkward start. By the fourth episode in, however, the season gets pretty much derailed beginning with "The Big Thaw" about a Rastafarian Michael Jackson reggae singer preserved in a cryogenic sleep chamber and then there's the infamous "Missing Hours" featuring James Brown and a whacked-out plot revolving around Trudy's alien abduction and it's time to call in Mulder and Scully instead of Crockett and Tubbs. If Vice hadn't already "Jumped the Shark" at that point, the introduction of Sheena Easton in the following episode "Like A Hurricane" as Sonny's recurring love-interest Caitlin Davies is enough to make you shriek like nails screeching on chalkboard when Sonny's lovey-dovey side reduces the season into a series of mushy soap-opera escapades and inevitable wedding bells ring while poor Rico is left on the sidelines. Then there's the throwaway "flashback" episode aptly titled "A Bullet For Crockett" which is nothing more than a series of clips from previous episodes including "Evan" from which the episode derives its name from as Sonny fights for his life after being shot in action, an oft-imitated television cheat which would be recycled again in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Shades of Gray" with Riker fighting for his life intercut with a series of episode flashbacks. On the plus side there's some good cinematography and lighting this season and DJ looks good with his longer hairstyle and PMT looks pretty suave with his GQ beard and there's a pretty decent selection of alternative music featuring tracks by artists like Yello, Love and Rockets, Gene Loves Jezebel, Billy Idol, Iggy Pop, U2 and Peter Gabriel peppered throughout but any misgivings you may have about season 4 eventually payoff with patience building to the last two dramatically stunning episodes of the season, "Deliver Us From Evil" when Crockett's nemesis Frank Hackman returns to settle the score and "Mirror Image" with Crockett suffering from amnesia and believing he is his undercover persona Burnett ("That's B-U-R-N-E-double T") that set the stage for the jaw-dropping season-ender and the three-part Burnett story-arc that continues into Vice's fifth and final season.
Catching up on my Vice.......2007-03-14
When this season originally aired, I found myself with a social life so hanging around the dorm room to watch a TV show on a Friday night wasn't an option. I've been catching up on the later seasons thanks to Sleuth. This is one of the best crime shows ever made.
It's nice that Universal has dumped the double sided DVDs and is giving us 5 DVDs. These episodes look as good as the first two seasons. I'm eager for the fifth (and final) season.

In its second season, Miami Vice walks that fine line between hip and cool. Hip fades, but cool is timeless. Then, as now, it doesn't get much cooler than this groundbreaking and trendsetting series' promise of a "life of adventure, exciting folks, and exotic locales," to quote one sardonic character. But the compelling stories, cinematic trappings, and lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry between costars Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas elevate Miami Vice from time capsule status. Likewise, the eclectic soundtrack, that would be painfully dated had it been stuck in the '80s, is a mind-blowing shuffle of genres and mainstream, alternative and world artists. "Prodigal Son," the double-length episode that opens the season, features Glenn Frey, U2, the Neville Brothers, Debbie Harry, Brian Ferry, Lou Reed, Traffic, and Phil Collins. Collins himself portrays a con man in one of the season's most entertaining episodes, "Phil the Shill." Not content to just be heard, other musicians who generally eschewed television, appeared on Miami Vice this season, adding to the series' considerable cachet. Among them: Kiss frontman Gene Simmons ("Prodigal Son"); Miles Davis ("Junk Love"); Leonard Cohen ("French Twist"); Ted Nugent ("Definitely Miami"); and Frank Zappa ("Payback"). Miami Vice instantly established itself as an oasis for character actors, many at the beginning of their careers. The second season offers early glimpses of Nathan Lane ("Buddies"), Harvey Fierstein and a pre-Seinfeld Michael Richards as a menacing heavy ("The Fix"), David Strathairn ("Out Where the Buses Don't Run"), Bob Balaban ("Back in the World"), and John Leguizamo ("Sons and Lovers," which also features the unfortunate stunt-casting of Lee Iacocca as a gun-toting parks commissioner).
Most of Miami Vice's buzz-generating episodes were in season 1, but season 2 offers several series benchmarks. Two of Johnson's finest hours are "Back in the World" (which he directed) and "Buddies," two episodes that explore Crockett's Vietnam War experience. Thomas got his chance to shine in "Prodigal Son" and "Sons and Lovers," in which Tubbs becomes a target of the vengeful Ivan Calderon. "Bushido" is an always-welcome showcase for Emmy-winner Edward James Olmos as Castillo, who helps shield an associate's Soviet wife and son from the CIA and KGB. "Out Where the Buses Don't Run" boasts an Emmy-worthy performance by guest star Bruce McGill (D-Day in Animal House) as an unhinged former vice cop. Miami Vice stylishly subverted TV cop drama convention, but despite one too many downbeat endings that freeze on a devastated Crockett, it remains exhilarating to re-visit. There are no extras on this three disc-set, but the episodes are enough to make you want to party like it's 1985. --Donald Liebenson

Miami Vice (pretty good tv show).......2007-05-21
I have found that these series of episodes only get better.Ive been a fan since i was young, but i never got to see all the episodes. Now that im watching them,I see what i was missing.A great buy for people who enjoy police and criminal shows.
Michael Mann the genius.......2007-05-10
He's in the top 2 or 3 directors of all time, and probably the best working today. What can anyone say, Miami Vice changed television forever--as a producer Mann invested heavily in getting the best writing and achieved the kind of television repeated today in serial shows like 24, Sopranos, Oz, etc, but without it being in continuing series mode. Some say when the black Daytona Ferrari got blown up, Vice went downhill...not so.
The DVD set is top notch, excellent quality.

Miami Vice Season Two, Twice as nice........2007-02-21
We receive season two of Miami vice, still in a daze from season one. What I really like about this T.V. series are the Superstar guest Stars featured in many of the episodes.Stars like Immam, Lee Ermey,
Shena Easton, and Phil Collins.
Visually we see the cutting edge Direction of many of the guest Directors featured on Miami vice,I feel this adds to the unique look of the series,it also accents each episode. All in all,Miami Vice is still
one of the most beautifull T.V. series ever made, both visually scene wise,
and in terms of cast, Actors Don Johnson Phillip Michael Thomas,Saundra
Santiago , and the beautiful Olivia Brown.Nothing compares to this T.V. series, nothing ever will.

To hear the opening beats of Jan Hammer's percussive, propulsive Miami Vice theme is to be instantly transported back to 1984. But this groundbreaking series, with its cinematic sensibility, cool clothes, and killer soundtrack is no mere blast from the past. It still rocks. This three-disc set would be worthless if it didn't. Music was an integral part of Miami Vice's hip vibe. The soundtrack propelled the stories and established the mood like no series before it. So the first thing you want to know is: Have the music rights been secured for this DVD release? In the pilot episode, does Phil Collins's "In the Air Tonight" still play ominously as vice undercover cops Crockett and Tubbs speed toward a bust? Does Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" serenade Sonny and Gina on his boat in the episode "One-Eyed Jack?" And what would the benchmark episode, "Smuggler's Blues" be without Glenn Frey's instant classic? From the Rolling Stones on a boombox to Elvis Presley singing "Rubberneckin'" on a TV, Vice's cutting-edge soundtrack has been preserved and honed in 5.1 surround sound glory.
Miami Vice made stars out of Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas, and Edward James Olmos, who won an Emmy as the intense, taciturn Lt. Castillo (watching him bust some martial arts moves in "Golden Triangle" is like Yoda cutting lose in Attack of the Clones), but the first season also offers time-capsule glimpses of actors on the cusp of stardom, including a pre-L.A. Law Jimmy Smits in the pilot, a pre-Crime Story Dennis Farina in "One-Eyed Jack," and a pre-Moonlighting Bruce Willis in "No Exit." Miami Vice put a neon sheen on cop-show convention. Its fashion sense (pastel suits, no belt, no socks), and the brilliantly employed freeze frames are still arresting. Miami Vice was a TV watershed, and this DVD set does it full justice. --Donald Liebenson

Be Carefull Taking The Discs Out..........2007-04-15
My girlfriend bought me season 1 last year right, ok...I went to take the first disc out and GOD that thing is IN THERE!! You practically have toi BEND the disc in half to get it away from that little plastic flower in the middle holding it in...Then, as we're watching the first episode the DVD freezes for a second or two and skips a little when Sonny says "I dont get, I dont understand this..you were my partner"...Then it plays fine. We thought ok, maybe I cracked the disc trying to take it out...So with the reciept she bought another one. I took the discs out of the first one and replaced them with the discs from the new one...then we returned the second box with the first discs...Same problem, the discs are IMPOSSIBLE to remove but I was more carefull this time, theres NO way I damaged it taking it out. At the EXACT same point in episode one, the disc freezes...and it only got worse, now it skips all through those three minutes and sometimes the DVD player will just get pissed and switch to the next chapter. Whether its an error in printing the discs or the more obvious, a packaging flaw...be carefull. AND HANG ONTO YOUR RECIEPT!!!!!!!!!!
Music sound track is A+ however............2007-04-12
Finally Miami Vice is available on dvd after watching the entire season 1, I can only give it 3 star rating. The good news - Universal did indeed retain the original soundtrack the 5.1 sound is fairly good given its age (20 years old). The bad news - Universal probably transcribe the episodes over from the vhs prints all the episodes looks grainy and colors bleed (especially red), I have play the discs on a regular crt & my 1080p hdtv - the picture looks worst on hdtv all of the grain shows. Even more puzzling its that other Universal titles (which I own) like Columbo, McCloud which are older looks better than Vice (!) So please rent the set before dropping your hard earned $$$ on season 1.
Miami Vice DVD.......2007-03-15
This is the original shows I watched as a teen. It is great.
Just as I remember it........2007-02-23
The extra material on the DVD adds to the (re)enjoyment of the series. Crockett and Tubbs defined cool for an era. The only downer is that the color saturation isn't what it ought to be (colors slightly faded).
CORNY, JUST CORNY. THE WORST!.......2007-02-22
I WASTED $40 BUCKS ON THIS JUNK. THE MUSIC IS GREAT THE COSTUMES ARE GREAT. THE ACTING, PLOT AND STORY LINES ARE PATHETIC. I BROKE THE DVD'S INTO PIECES AND THREW THEM IN THE GARBAGE BECAUSE I WAS SO DISSAPOINTED. I REMEMBER WATCHING THESE SHOWS AS A YOUNGSTER. WOW, WAS I EVER IMMATURE TO LIKE THIS GARBAGE.

Description
Season Hubley (HARDCORE) stars as Princess, a loving single mom turned Hollywood hooker who can provide any depraved pleasure for the right price. But when a volatile cop (Gary Swanson) uses her to trap a sadistic killer, Princess becomes the prey of a psychotic pimp known as Ramrod (a mind-blowing, take-noprisoners performance by Wings Hauser). Tonight, the neon jungle of Los Angeles will explode in an orgy of vengeance and violence. And the only outlaws more desperate than the hustlers, whores and freaks that rule the streets are the VICE SQUAD. "You may think you've heard of every sickness and perversion movies like to titter about," wrote Rex Reed in The New York Daily News, "but there are quite a few in VICE SQUAD you've never dreamed possible!" Pepe Serna (SCARFACE) and original MTV VJ Nina Blackwood co-star in this vicious `80s action smash from the creator of the `schoolgirl hooker' hit ANGEL and the director of DEAD & BURIED.
Customer Reviews:
Obscure Gem From the Eighties.......2007-05-25
In the eighties there were two indelible portrayals of psychotic pimps, Morgan Freeman as Fast Black in "Street Smart" and Wings Hauser as Ramrod in "Vice Squad". Unfortunate for Freeman, "Street Smart" was a rather forgettable venture but Hauser was luckier. Hauser's contribution is reason alone to see "Vice Squad" but the picture is so much more. The film works on two levels. Firstly, it's a cinema verite document of the vice scene in Hollywood. Secondly, it's a dark comedy about the proclivities of the johns that frequent the strip. A personal fave of mine is Season Hubley in Frederick's of Hollywood bridal wear to fulfill a rich john's fantasy. The film is also beautifully photographed in all it's neon decadence. I note this because some would dismiss "Vice Squad" as "B" movie fodder. The cinematographer here is John Alcott who won an Oscar lensing Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon". "Vice Squad" may not be for all tastes but I thought it was great.
WOW! Finally on DVD!.......2007-01-24
Back a few years ago, this movie was really hard-to-find on VHS. Anchor Bay, as always, has done a stellar job on the presentation of this movie. Everything from utilizing the original movie poster artwork for the DVD cover, to the picture quality- it's all perfect. If you like trashy, gritty, and violent movies, this movie will deliver big time. I remember it was released in 1982, but kept being brought back as an added feature at the drive-ins here in Toronto, right up until 1984. If you are a fan of early '80s movies, and with a lot of violence, but a great plotline that will keep you captivated, "Vice Squad" will not disappoint!
Strange and crazy, but true things happens in big cities........2007-01-19
This is a very good action movie that will probably more likely than not make the average veiwer amazed (but then again maybe not) that this kind of stuff actually goes on in big cities.
A.K.A The Adventures of Ramrod The Pimp.......2006-04-19
Vice Squad is a pretty cool movie. This was back in the day when crime dramas were nice and gritty without any real message to get across. Plotwise it's kept basic: Season Hubley's a hooker. An "outlaw" hooker coz she ain't got no pimp. She's also an equal opportunity hooker catering to foot fetishists, golden shower enthusiasts and amputees. She helps the cops nail a psychotic pimp named Ramrod(Great name. I have to laugh ever time this name is spoken in the film), he escapes custody, then the search is on for the vice suad to find either Hubley or Ramrod before Ramrod gets his revenge on the sneaky hooker. That's all it really is. Ramrod arms himself and searches the streets of Hollywood for Hubley. Hubley continues to do her job, meeting an interesting bunch of "johns" along the way. B movie regular Wings Hauser appears to be having the time of his life playing Ramrod, a character who should earn his place right next to Cape Fear's Max Cady or Blue Velvet's Frank Booth. Hubley is a decent actress in this, but I certainly don't see what all the guys in this film are drooling over(then again I must consider the guys doing the drooling). The film was directed by Gary Sherman who horror fans may remember as the director of Dead and Buried as well as Poltergeist 3. A very fun piece of junkfood for around midnight on Saturday. Leonard Maltin calls it "dull and sleazy", but he's only half right. Plus, Maltin's a schmuck. A priceless theme song sung by Hauser as well.
"Just another happy go lucky day on the vice squad.".......2006-03-09
According to the film Vice Squad (1982), the streets of Hollywood seem to be the place to be if you're a hustler, hooker, pimp, fiend, junkie, pusher, freak, weirdo, drag queen, deviant, reprobate, toe sucker, or just a degenerate miscreant in general...co-written and directed by Gary Sherman (Death Line, Dead & Buried, Poltergeist III), the film features Season Hubley (Escape from New York), Gary Swanson (The Bone Collector), and Wings Hauser (Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time, Tales from the Hood). Also appearing is former MTV video disc jockey Nina Blackwood, Beverly Todd (They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!), Lydia Lei (Doctor Detroit), Fred `Rerun' Berry ("What's Happening!!"), and Hispanic character actor Pepe Serna (Red Dawn, Silverado), whom your may remember as Al Pacino's henchman who lost a few inches off the top via a chainsaw in the 1983 Brian De Palma film Scarface.
Season Hubley plays a single mother with a young daughter, relatively new to town, who makes ends meet as a prostitute named `Princess'. As she's preparing to send her daughter away for the weekend so that she can hit the streets to ply her trade, she gets a frantic phone call from another streetwalker named `Ginger' (Blackwood), who's since gone into hiding after a vicious beating she received from her psychotic cowboy pimp named Ramrod (Hauser). Princess, who's what's known as an `outlaw' (she works for herself), tries to give Ginger some advice, but it's pretty much a waste of time as Ginger's kind of stupid, possibly due to the fact Ramrod cracked her in the skull a few too many times (Ramrod eventually catches up to Ginger and whips her Mommie Dearest style with a `pimp stick', which is basically a bent out of shape clothes hanger). A vice detective named Walsh (Swanson) makes the scene and vows to get Ramrod after seeing his overly sadistic handiwork. To this end he enlists the aid of Princess (actually, he blackmails her) to lure Ramrod into a trap, which is successful, but a wily Ramrod manages to escape custody and is back on the streets...with a vengeance. As you can imagine, old Ramrod is pretty P.O.ed about being set up (one might say he's seething cauldron of hostility, with serious anger management issues), so after equipping himself with a few, choice weapons (including a switchblade that looks more like a machete), he begins scouring the streets for Princess, who's unaware of his subsequent escape (and the beating she's surely in for once Captain Insano catches up to her). Walsh and his colleagues are now desperately searching for either Princess or Ramrod before the nastiness goes down, sticking mainly with the latter as his trail of carnage is much easier to follow (Princess continues to work, taking on various clients including a rich weirdo and a sleazy conventioneer, among others). The situation eventually comes to a head as the vindictive Ramrod catches up to Princess, and Walsh and his crew catch up to Ramrod, who isn't about to go down without a fight.
Vice Squad is a mean, grimy, sleazy, nasty and misogynistic film, seeped with a strong sense of realism driven by the composite characterizations and various location shots. On the surface the main characters seem pretty standard (a hooker with a heart of gold, a sadistic pimp, an overworked veteran vice cop who's seen too much), but the lead actors manage to infuse enough in terms of personal touches to keep things interesting. I originally saw this film a number of years ago on cable, and since then whenever I hear the name Wings Hauser, my mind immediately goes to the character he played here, mainly because his presence so fills the screen. The one scene that really sticks with me is during the sting operation. The cops bust in on his pad, attempt to subdue him, but he manages to grab Princess and use her as a shield with one arm, while beating her over the head with a barstool with the other arm. Hauser didn't appear to be holding anything back, and I will admit sometimes it did seem a little comical, but more often than not it provided for some pretty tense stuff. Swanson, on the other hand, felt reserved most of the time, which would seem in tune with the character as if I were a vice detective cruising Hollywood's mean streets, I probably wouldn't want to get to close to the ever present slime and moral decay for fear it might glom on...I thought Season Hubley also did very well as a woman who does what she feels she must for her and her daughter to survive, basically disconnecting herself from the harsh, nasty, seedy reality of her job if only to keep from taking her own life out of misery. Keep an eye out for the late, great Fred `Rerun' Berry, as a hustler named `Super Pimp', in a short, but memorable scene in which Ramrod is shaking him down for information, right before he uses his giant switchblade to do something very unpleasant...let's just say Rerun won't be dancing for awhile. As far as Ms. Blackwood, I didn't even recognize her in her role, given her character's used and seriously abused appearance. This is a very violent film, but the really brutal bits aren't shown as the scenes ends prior to the nastiness, usually picking up again during the aftermath, supplying the viewer enough visuals to draw their own mental images. I thought director Gary Swanson did a wonderful job as the pacing rarely slowed down. I especially liked the latter half of the film, as the story breaks off into three, separate threads, one following Princess, the second Ramrod, and the third Walsh and the police. We're constantly switching between these three elements until they finally converge near the end, providing for a highly climatic and satisfying finish.
Anchor Bay Entertainment provides a good-looking anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) print on this DVD release. There is a noticeable graininess in some scenes, but it didn't draw away from the images on the film. Other than that, the print is very clear and sharp. The Dolby Digital mono audio comes through well, although some of the dialog was kind of muffled at times, making me wish there were English subtitles provided, but there aren't. None of Anchor Bay Entertainment's past releases feature subtitles, which always seemed odd to me given their general commitment to quality overall. As far as extras included, there's an audio commentary track with director Gary Swanson, a theatrical trailer for the film, two radio spots, a poster and still gallery, and a five page insert booklet with liner notes provided by Richard Harland Smith, a staff writer for Video Watchdog Magazine.
Cookieman108
By the way, Hauser himself sang the theme song titled `Neon Slime', played at the beginning and end of the film. Also, I learned cops get pretty upset when you steal their paper clips.

Description
Miami Vice: Season One - The cops. The cars. The clothes. Miami Vice: Season One is the explosive, groundbreaking detective show that redefined the word "cool." Set against the seamy and steamy Miami underworld, ride shotgun with suave Vice cops Sonny Crockett (Golden Globe winner Don Johnson) and Rico Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) as they battle a never-ending gallery of criminals. Set to an electrifying soundtrack of rock legends, including Glenn Frey, Phil Collins, U2 and Peter Gabriel, every episode crackles with excitement and stylish flair. Also starring Emmy and Golden Globe winner Edward James Olmos and a powerhouse roster of guest stars including Ving Rhames, Jimmy Smits and Bruce Willis.
Miami Season Two - The groundbreaking detective series that defined a decade returns to DVD with all 22 thrilling episodes of Miami Vice: Season Two! In this electrifying Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning second season, Vice cops Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and Rico Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) are back in their sleek Ferrari pursuing every ruthless criminal under the relentless Miami sun. With a sizzling soundtrack of all the original hit songs remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, including music by Phil Collins, U2, The Who and more, it's no mystery to see why Miami Vice was the supercharged action series that People magazine hailed as "the first show to look really new and different since color TV was invented."
Customer Reviews:
Relive the magic.......2006-11-07
Great set. The 2 hour pilot episode was as riveting now as when it originally aired. Although certain aspects have aged (ie music, fashion) the action and plot withstand the test of time. I am amazed at some of the subject matter that was able to get on prime time air when it did (pornography rings, drug smuggling, etc) and in such detail and realism. But this is essential to Michael Mann's modus operandi. If you are a true Michael Mann and Vice fan, this set is something you won't be able to do without (and in crisp, DVD resolution!) If you are not, well you might just think it's a relic of the 80s.
AWESOME!.......2006-11-06
OMG, I am somewhere close to heaven when I watch the original Miami Vice series. I was a huge fan back in the 80s. I cannot wait for all the other seasons to come out on DVD. Does anyone know the ETA on those?...lol
Miami Vice .......2006-11-03
My husband and I loved this programme when it first aired in the U.K. back in the early 80's. It went out on a Monday night at 9pm and everything in the household stopped, then you talked about it all the next day with your workmates. I was devasted when Crocketts wife played by Sheena Easton got murdered. I purchased this double DVD as a suprise gift for my husband and he loves it, has watched it over and over again, I think he's reliving his youth. Can't wait for the others to follow
Miami Vice Season 1 & 2.......2006-10-28
The cars, the music . . . simply awesome! Now where are seasons 3, 4 & 5?
Miami Vice Seasons 1 & 2.......2006-08-31
Just an amazing show to begin with. Being able to see these groundbreaking shows again is great. The soundtrack is nothing short of incredible. Edgy storylines - especially for the time. Interesting characters and cool guest stars. Can't wait for them to release the remaining seasons!! Highly recommended.
