Editorial Review:
Description
One of Bruce Lee's first generation students, Patrick Strong now reveals-for the first time on video - many of the actual principles he learned directly from Bruce.\, that created such awesome power. Bruce Lee (135 pounds) was known to be able to hit like a 180 pound man and as Patrick says "I have been hit by Bruces hand and his power was absolutely devastating".

He structured a complex training method designed to greatly enhance his muscle and nervous systems to elevate his already tremendous speed and power to even greater heights.

In this video Patrick tells many of his own personal stories relating to the "Little Dragon" and how he believes Bruce took his keen understanding of martial kinesiology and a unique set of principles gained from his Wing Chun Gung Fu to develop his art.

This tape is a must for all student students of Bruce lee's art and one that fills in the pieces by someone who actually there in the beginning.

3 out of 5 stars YOU TWO COULD MAKE ONE.......2007-06-22

Henry Hathaway's THE BLACK ROSE is based on the novel The Black Rose written by Thomas B. Costain. Walter of Gurnie, played by Tyrone Power, is 21 years old in the film while Tyrone was 36 but looked more, and Cecile Aubry, who was 22 years old in 1950, looked 14 as Maryam. It's no big deal but I still felt uncomfortable during the love scenes between the two characters. However, Orson Welles is brilliant as Bayan and steals the show each time he's on the screen.

I didn't read Costain's book but I can imagine that the author's main idea was to describe how the feeling to belong to a same nation could grow between people as different as Saxons and Normans. This antagonism is well symbolized by the character of Maryam who is clearly described as dual, remember how she must always disguise or apply heavy make-up over her body in order to look as an English girl. This duality is also present in the couple Walter of Gurnie/Tristram Griffin, the rational student and the poet with a bow.

The problem is that these ideas, that are certainly very interesting in a book, are not handled in a very cinematographic manner. I always had the feeling to read a book when I watched THE BLACK ROSE, with its chapters well marked: the scene in the castle, the scene in the family home, the scene in the desert, the scene in the Empress of China's palace and so on. THE BLACK ROSE is meant to be a swashbuckler but there is hardly a fight at the end of the film. With bows and arrows and without Tyrone Power. We see, in numerous occasions, thousands of extras walking in the desert but not a single battle against the Chinese army ! All these considerations explain why I don't consider THE BLACK ROSE as a major achievement in neither Henry Hathaway's nor Tyrone Power's careers.

A DVD zone Marco Polo and friends.

4 out of 5 stars An Old Time Adventure Movie.......2007-06-01

This movie is an old favorite. It's about Norman/Saxon England, and a young rebel who with his friend Jack Hawkins and his trusty longbow, takes off for Cathay and adventure. He meets up with Orson Wells as a Mongol general and manages to survive and carry back to England various Chinese secrets (an English version of Marco Polo). The female star was poorly cast...but this is a movie that pushes through its problems with epic scenes of the Mongol army, and takes you back to old-time adventure stories, before the likes of Indiana Jones etc.

Regardless of problems with editing and the plot, this movie is an enjoyable ride on the backs of Tyrone Power, Jack Hawkins, and Orson Welles. This is not his best film, but so what. It is still a good Tyrone Power entertainment ride. An average Tyrone power movie is still a reality-morphing experience in my view. I am awaiting the DVD of the Bengal Lancers, another favorite.

1 out of 5 stars Power Rendered Impotent.......2007-06-01

"The Black Rose" = stinkweed. Its unprepossessing plot is shot full of holes. The poorly drawn characters are generally unsympathetic. Consider the atrocious casting of the film's leading roles: mature, very American Tyrone Power as a young Oxford scholar; juvenile French actress Cecile Aubry--as the (unconvincing) romantic interest--is about as sexually devastating as a kewpie or cabbage-patch doll. The film's leaden pacing, its prolix and unremarkable dialogue, its profound lack of credibility as well as its failure to appeal to any other emotions than this viewer's boredom and contempt result in my judging "The Black Rose" as one of the worst films Tyrone Power ever had the ill fortune to make.

This otherwise undeserving DVD release does include a single interesting special feature: a Power Family Reunion featurette, in which Tyrone's son, two daughters, and second wife sit down and reminisce about him.

4 out of 5 stars An earnest Tyrone Power, a succulently hammy Orson Welles and an adventure from Norman castles to Chinese palaces and back again.......2007-05-11

And what's a black rose? We're told it is the name given to the clove, the most precious of spices. In this case, the clove is Maryam, played by Cecile Aubry. She was a small French actress, discovered, it is said, by producer Darrell F. Zanuck, and who looks no older than 14. She has a small mouth which is filled with tiny teeth and a plump tongue, and she occasionally jumps about to express enthusiasm. If Vera-Ellen and Charlie McCarthy had ever had a child, it would look a lot like Cecile Aubry. The movie, The Black Rose, is no stinker, but it suffers from Aubry in the role. Unfortunately, it also suffers because Tyrone Power, playing Walter of Gurnie, a young scholar in his early twenties, looks every bit the 39-year-old man he was. The one insuperable drawback to the movie is its disjointed nature. We move from Norman England 200 years after William the Conqueror, to the middle-east and then on to a Mongol army moving and battling its way toward China, then to the imperial court of China itself, and finally back to England. We have a movie which is part historical adventure, part travelogue, part uneasy romance and, with Orson Welles playing the Mongol general Bayan with false eyelids, chubby cheeks and greasy skin, part succulent ham. The movie features some great scenic set-ups, interesting acting in one or two of the secondary parts, particularly by Jack Hawkins, and a nice look at a marching mongol horde, but on balance I think it is one of Power's weakest romantic-adventure films.

Walter of Gurnie, the illegitimate son of a Saxon lord who had married a Norman woman, is a hot-headed Oxford student who has left his studies when he heard his father has died. He hates, with good reason, the Normans. One night he joins a band of fellow Saxons led by Tristram Griffin (Jack Hawkins), an excellent bowman, in an attack on the castle which had been his father's. He planned to free some Saxon hostages held by his step-mother and her son, as well as to claim the boots his father had left in his father's will. In this will his father had publicly acknowledged him as his son. As a result of the attack, Walter and Tris must flee, and Walter decides they should go adventuring to Cathay to win gold, jewels and fame. Along the way he meets the great Mongol general, Bayan of the Hundred Eyes, who takes an interest in the two. Walter and Tris also are tricked into hiding a young woman, Maryam, who is one of dozens of maidens being sent to the Great Khan and who are traveling with Bayan's army. After battles and marches, archery contests, chess games and a walk along the rope of death, Walter is sent to the Chinese court to explain how powerful Bayan is and why the Chinese should surrender the imperial city. Now we have luxurious surroundings, manicured gardens, treacherous mandarins, jewels sewn into coats and a harrowing escape in which Walter and Maryam are separated. Finally, we're back in England, where the king honors Walter for his bravery and for bringing back the knowledge of the Chinese. All seems settled except for his lost love for Maryam. Will they be reunited? And how? See the movie.

Tyrone Power was Zanuck's champion swashbuckler. Power was, for me, a very earnest actor. In his early years he had great good looks. As he aged, his face thickened a bit, his eyebrows grew dense and his five-o-clock shadow must have been a real challenge for Fox's make-up artists. He was an actor who longed to show he could do more than prance around the scenery with a sword in his hand. In two movies, Nightmare Alley and Witness for the Prosecution, he fought for the chance to show he could handle unpleasant roles, and he did very well. Yet for the most part he stayed safely playing conventional star heroes. He died of a heart attack when he was only 44. He was filming, what else, a dueling scene for one more big, expensive and forgettable adventure movie.

For those who enjoy reading sweeping historical adventures, you might like the source book, The Black Rose by Thomas B. Costain. It's one of those big, fat novels that goes from adventure to adventure. Costain probably is barely remembered now. He was a Canadian journalist who, in his early sixties, unexpectedly struck it rich as a popular novelist. For ten years he wrote best selling fiction and well-respected popular histories. His fiction is packed with well-researched history and his histories read like well-written novels. The Black Rose is still a good read. The Black Rose

The DVD transfer does not have the crispness and rich color we've come to hope for. It looks like the DVD was made from a reasonably well-maintained source print which received no restoration work. One of the extras is a feature with Power's children and a former wife discussing him and his work. I only sampled it.

4 out of 5 stars If Marco Polo were a Saxon.......2007-04-19

This is one of those old Hollywood saturated-color films that successfully transports me to another time and place, even on subsequent viewings. The plot steamrolls over its problems, leaving me with the sense of having had an exciting journey from England to North Africa to China.

It's based on a Thomas B Costain's novel of the same name and it brings from its source enuf 13th century details to give the story a historical feeling. The exquisite location photography of Jack Cardiff (in England and Morocco) completes the phenomenon.

Tyrone Power (as a Saxon embittered with Norman England) heads a fine, mostly British cast. He may be a tad bit too old and too stiff, but he's personable and has good chemistry with Jack Hawkins as a fellow Saxon runaway, and with the massively charismatic Orson Welles as Bayan of the Hundred Eyes (a historical Mongol General).

Cécile Aubry as "The Black Rose" is a mixed bag. She's gives a very good performance as the over-eager half-English, half-Arabic girl trapped in the Mongol caravan. But she's blonde and blue-eyed! She has a French, not an Arabic accent. And she's too little-girl-cute for my taste.

This is not a action/adventure movie by today's standards. It's too thoughtful. But that's why I like this film more.

Three Gangsters vie for the control of Philadelphia

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Makes Superfly look like the Godfather .......2007-02-07

I don't know if this is a movie or a minstrel show.
I would say that it's two things Beanie Siegel and Dame Dash pride themselves on when making these retarded hood movies. One is "keeping it straight hood" another is sterotypes.

There's no need for me say what hasn't already been said about this movie because quite honestly, the horrible quality of this movie speaks for itself.

This isn't black cinema it's black death.

anyone with the intellect that's over 12 years old will let the "State" keep this "Property".

P.S. What's up with the horrible muti-shot scenes( a bunch of scenes in one shot) near the end of the movie where they are attempting to tie up the loose ends the story( if you wanna call it a story). I guess Damon Dash is the next Quentin Taratino(sarcasm).

3 out of 5 stars Orginal is better........2006-09-19

When I first heard that they were making a State Property 2, I was so excited. That is until I got it. This movie wasn't gangsta at all. As a matter of fact, it didn't even have a plot. Damon Dash's performance was horrible. He should stick to producing records. Even though the orignal is low-budget, is was way better than this movie. They should have got the guy who directed the first movie. This movie was straight garbage.

1 out of 5 stars damn.......2005-10-26

i dont know if it was intended to be a comedy or action, cause either way it came out wrong, poor acting and unrealistic events. if you luv the ROC. don't see this movie cause it was definately a mistake

4 out of 5 stars Its a Thug-shoot-em-up movie with a comedic twist........2005-07-24

Damon Dash returns to bring us "state property 2" a more light-hearted sequel than it's gritty original.

Beans(beanie sigel)after running from block to block and taking over most of philly in the original is now serving a 15 year sentence in prison and his crew back home in phily is messing up.Their getting robbed, busted by feds, drugdeals are going sour and they are losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.
when D-nice visits beans in prison and tells him whats going on,
Beans gets pissed and tells them no more "surprise parties"(watch the film and you know what i mean by that)but he really can't do anything because locked up.Untill he meets "El pollo Loco"(N.O.R.E) and he tells beans when he gets out of prison in one month he will give his crew work and work means that beans crew will be making money.BUT when El pollo and his partner in crime Biggs turn their back on beans and give beans's crew jobs that involve stealing from another crew(dame dash crew)a 3 way crew battle begins.

Now Unlike it's original movie which was dark, gritty, very street and thug, this sequel plays like a thug-comedy.
From The interactive words and designs flying on the screen, to funny lines from all 3 crew's members, to the violent humour(for Example Beans Imagining he's hitting Dame repeately with a shovel)TO El Pollo telling us how he has a diffrent chick to have sex with for everyday of the week and we are shown him in action with these chicks. It's light-hearted humor comedy and i commend Damon Dash for not just rehashing it's gangsta image from the original but for trying to be different and humorous.

The people you will see in this movie are
Beanie sigel, N.O.R.E, damon dash, camron, ol dirty bastard, kanye west, M.O.P, freeway, bernard hopkins, winky wright, oschino, omillio sparks, young gunz, loon, juelz santana, jimmy jones, and mariah carey.

I suggest you rent this movie and you will have a pretty good time watching it. It's a thug movie blended in as a comedy and if your a fan of "Roc-A-Fella" you will love it.

The Opinionated One has Spoken

5 out of 5 stars STATE PROPERTY 2.......2005-07-24

STATE PROPERTY-2 WAS A VERY GOOD MOVIE. BEANIE SIEGEL WAS ABSOLUTLEY GREAT,BUT DAMON DASH CAN'T ACT HIS WAY OUT OF A PAPER BAG. THE MOVIE KEPT YOU LAUGHING AND EVEN WONDERING WHAT BEANS WAS GOING TO DO NEXT. ANYTHING MOVIE THAT COMES OUT WITH BEANIE SIEGEL IN IT I WOULD BUY. THIS GUY IS A TRIP. I HAVE BOTH MOVIES AND WOULD NOT LEND THEM OUT TO ANYONE, THEY GOT TO GO AND GET THEIR OWN. GET THIS MOVIE, BELIEVE ME YOU WOULD NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.

The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie was released in 1991 under the title This Is the Super Saiya-jin, Son Goku. Goku and Krillin use their powers to deflect a giant asteroid from striking the Earth. But the asteroid is really the ship of the evil Lord Slug, who bullies Gohan and Bulma to get the Dragon Balls and obtain the eternal youth he desires. The newly regenerated Slug begins to "terrafreeze" Earth, killing inhabitants and transforming the planet into a gargantuan space vessel. During their inevitable duel, Goku learns that the now-gigantic Lord Slug is the last member of a race of "super Namek-jins." Goku eventually defeats him with some help from Gohan and Piccolo. For the U.S. release, Funimation has added an intrusive rock soundtrack--and five minutes of obnoxious commercials at the beginning of the tape. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Considerable cartoon violence, drug use. --Charles Solomon

4 out of 5 stars My favorite DBZ movie........2007-06-13

I consider myself a huge DBZ fan, and this is my favorite movie. Unfortunately, being the best DBZ movie isn't saying much. However, as far as the single-mindedness of the DBZ movies go, this is the most entertaining. Since it was released in America at the height of the DBZ craze, it benefits from probably the highest production values. Most notably, the music. It features music from Disturbed and Deftones, which are implemented well.

    Fun Fact:
Even the edited version of Lord Slug that was shown on Adult Swim featured the Uncut version of a Disturbed song, so the F-Word was actually on Cartoon Network. Somebody should lose there job over that. Haha.

3 out of 5 stars The worst DBZ movie?.......2007-03-20

This movie is by far nowhere near the worst DBZ movie. That spot is reserved for Bio Broly. Nobody can deny that the plot in this one was used already but the action more than makes up for this. The earth was about to be destroyed by a passing comet. Goku and Krillin save the planet from destruction. This is only a prelude for the things to come. A group of warriors invade the earth led by Lord Slug. This results in a very heated battle between Goku and Lord Slug. The battle was good from beginning to end. It also had a pretty decent soundtrack. The only problem with this movie is the same problem with all the movies. It just doesn't fit in the timeline. Still it was a pretty solid movie, and saying that its unwatchable is bananas. If your a fan take advantage of that cheap price and pick this up.

3 out of 5 stars Japanese Version rocks, english version okay.......2007-01-04

Okay I've heard alot about DBZ movie 4- Lord Slug over the years, from it being the worse DBZ movie to date,to being unwatchable. Well I finally decided to check it out,and I have to say this movie is pretty good. I watch the english version of the movie first and it was okay, the voice acting is pretty good. The only regrets that I have concerning the english version and the reason I gave this movie 3 stars instead of 5 is because, the music is not that good for the english version, you might have a couple of music cues that are good, but nothing to be giddy about. Also, for some strange reason, the people at funimation always tend to put corney dialogue in and say things that just aren't ment to be said,or for that matter just doesn't make since. After I watch the english version,I immediatley went back and watch the japanese version,it was like a rebirth of some sorts, because the music was great and the dialogue made perfect since, and situatons were explain more clearly. Why funi didn't use the japanese script instead of the english one I will never know. If funi had kept the original japanese score along with the japanese script the english version would've been awesome! Maybe they'll rerelease all the DBZ movies and have the option of listening to at least the japanese track along with the english voice cast, and knowing the way funi likes to make money they probably will.

3 out of 5 stars Totally average as far as Dragon Ball Z movies go.......2006-10-11

Lord Slug (1991.) The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie.

    INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.

    OVERVIEW:
Dragon Ball Z Movie Four, Lord Slug, was released in Japan on March 19, 1991. The movie was first released in America on August 7, 2001. It is the fourth of the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies. The original Japanese title translates to something like "Super Saiya-Jin Son Goku." The opening for the Japanese version of the movie is Cha La Head Cha La, but it's the alternate, movies-only opening ending with the scene of Goku holding his bow. The ending animation features newly-created footage of the characters, and a unique piece of music.

    THE STORY:
The time period is one following the fight against Nappa and Vegeta, and one before the Z fighters depart for Namek. It is also set after Movie Three, The Tree Of Might, since Gohan's dragon appears. Earth is nearly pummeled by a meteor, but Kamehameha blasts by Goku and Krillin save the day. But this was only the beginning of the problem. From the meteor comes Lord Slug, an aging but still super-powerful evil Namekian. He has his sights set on capturing the Earth and turning it into his new mobile base planet, as well as getting the Dragon Balls to reclaim his youth.

    REVIEW OF STORY:
Many people say this is the worst Dragon Ball Z movie. I'm not necessarily saying they're wrong, but I am going to say that they are far too critical and harsh. I found it to be quite enjoyable. Definitely not the best Dragon Ball Z movie, but still far from being a bad one. The greatest strength of this movie would have to be the battle scenes involving Piccolo. I won't spoil anything here, but he has some awesome scenes. And let's not forget the classic "Whistle Of Doom" so many fans speak highly of. Classic stuff. Sadly, when people say the movie is plagued with weaknesses, they aren't totally wrong. The main bad guy is underdeveloped as a character, as are his henchmen. This alone makes the movie less fun to watch. And let's be realistic, the whole "alien invader" thing has been done to death, and not just in Dragon Ball Z. In some places, this feature feels like a really cheesy fifties science fiction movie. The movie also tends to drag on longer than necessary. And the ending... let's just say it's not much different than the ending to the two movies that followed this one. And despite the (original Japanese) title of the film, Goku never becomes a Super Saiyan in the movie (though he does come close at one point.) What it comes down to is an average Dragon Ball Z movie. Not horrible, not great.

    OFFICIAL?
I don't consider any of the movies official to the Dragon Ball Z storyline, since Akira Toriyama himself didn't create them, not to mention the fact they don't usually fit into the storyline. This is no exception. The small gap between the Saiyan and Frieza sagas is the only time this one could take place, but Piccolo (who was killed by Nappa) is alive, automatically rendering it false. And Gohan's dragon appears, who was introduced in the non-canon Tree Of Might movie. As such, this movie could only take place in an alternate universe in which no good guys are killed in the Saiyan Saga, and in which Tree Of Might also took place.

    REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Why couldn't get get interviews with cast and crew, or trivia/facts, something like that? FUNimation has a lot of room to improve on the DVDs.

    THE DUBBED VERSION:
Lots of people tend to bash FUNimation's dub of the Dragon Ball Z series? Why? It's inaccurate and sometimes just plain stupid. Not to mention there are times when the choice of voice actors is questionable. They have a tendency to add in too much unneeded extra dialogue. For instance, following the scene where Piccolo yells at Gohan to stop whistling, in the original Japanese version he says nothing more, while in the dub he APOLOGIZES AND TELLS HIM THE WHISTLING WASN'T BAD? WTF!? That's not the Piccolo I know and love. And did I neglect to mention that FUNimation rerecorded the whistling? Not a really big deal, but it was widely expected that the original whistling would be kept intact in the dub. Another example is Bulma looking up after the meteor scene when the fragments are falling to Earth. She's ENJOYING IT in the dub, saying it's pretty. This is a total change from the real version in which she's in a total state of shock. There's stupid dialogue around every corner in the dub. Why is it FUNimation can do great dubbed versions of other animes (Full Metal Alchemist comes to mind) but they can't ever do it for Dragon Ball Z? Topping off the crap fest that is the dubbed version is the music. We don't get the original Japanese music in the dubbed version. We get some rather lame, standard-fare instrumental sequences (if you've watched it on Cartoon Network you'll know what I'm talking about.) And that's not the worst of it. The soundtrack is NU METAL. Come on! If I want to listen to Disturbed, I'll pop in their CD. This kind of music has no place in Dragon Ball Z, and it greatly detracts from the original intended movie. Do I even have to say it? Watch the Japanese version.

    OVERALL:
Overall this is a good package. Not the best Dragon Ball Z move, and certainly not the best DVD release of Dragon Ball Z content, but overall I'm satisfied. It's not one of the best movies, however, so I really can only recommend this one to die-hard fans of the series who can't get enough.

    EDITION NOTES:
Two versions of this were released: Edited and Uncut. Obviously, buy uncut. The DVD isn't as readily available as it once was, but is still fairly easy to find. Used stores that buy anime DVDs, online and in-person, should have it.

1 out of 5 stars DBZ hits rock bottom..........2007-02-06

The movies peaked with Brolly - Legendary Super Saiyan and have sharply declined in both story quality and action ever since. I only finished watching this film out of sheer morbid curiosity and was sorry I did so. This movie did not add to the series in any way, shape, or form. Yeah, I am aware that it is supposed to be funny, but they usually balance comedy with action, but this movie just stunk. Trunks and Goten are ok in small doses, but this was just too much. Fortunately there is a light at the end of the tunnel - Wrath of the Dragon is awsome (I have seen the Japanese version) and I look forward to them ending the US release of the series on a good note.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of the better Z films.......2006-10-14

    Bio-Broly

    OVERVIEW:
This is the eleventh the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies.

    THE STORY:
At the conclusion of the second Broly movie, he was killed. For good. But he was cloned. An old rival of Mr. Satan has cloned Broly to get revenge on his old rival for grudges they held against each other back in the old days. Just as Android 18 is about to sock it to Mr. Satan for not paying her the money he owes her, he is taken away for the Bio Warrior challenge. Goten, Trunks, and 18 follow - not knowing that what lies ahead is the return of one of their strongest foes.

    REVIEW OF STORY:
Broly didn't need a sequel. He certainly didn't need two sequels. This is generally regarded as the worst of all the Dragon Ball Z movies. I am inclined to agree. While it has its moments, it was an unneeded sequel that should never have been made. Once again, with a focus on Goten and Trunks, it's more funny than serious. Don't bother with this one unless you want the complete Dragon Ball Z movie catalogue.

    OFFICIAL?
Since the first Broly movie wasn't canon, his sequels are automatically fake. However, this movie and its predecessor could have taken place right around the time before the World Tournament prior to the arrival of Babidi took place. But for that to work, the first Broly movie would have to have taken place, which doesn't fit into the storyline at all. So ultimately I have to say this film isn't canon.

    REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Some more recent DVDs have character profiles, though these are lacking and could have been written better.

They can do good dubbed versions for plenty of other animes, such as Full Metal Alchemist, but every time they've tried dubbing Toriyama's classic, they butcher it to hell. The nu metal they put in as background music only further defiles the original series. Stick with the uncut subbed track.

    OVERALL:
Overall this is a decent package, but not one of the better movies. Get it only if you want to see the continuation of the Broly story, or if you're a completist who wants all the Z movies.

    EDITION NOTES:
All three Broly movies were reissued in a cheap, affordable three pack! Get the three pack, because you'll be getting three movies for the price of one!

3 out of 5 stars Chould have been better.......2006-02-05

Dragon ball Z moives have always been full of action but I am sorry to say that this one is mostly comday. The moives is about when one of hercules old freinds Invites him to challenge some of his bio wriorrs.Meanwhile trunks and goten sneak along and try to see whants going on only to learn that he has truned broly into a bio!The thing that really made me mad was that the fighting only last for 15 minuits. But still the jokes are pretty funny but stick the orginal broly or broly 2.P.S.This is uncut so it's not sutible for all kids.

1 out of 5 stars More like Boring-Broly.......2005-12-17

I am a fan of DBZ, I am a fan of Goten, I think Hercule is funny and I think #18 is hot. Yet this movie sucked! It was missing what makes DBZ so great: lots of action and a great plot. Broly is overused and this completely ruins him. Like most DBZ movies, it doesn't fit into the timeline. If we worked it in, then Goten and Trunks would only be a matter of hours away from using the Fusion technique. Had this movie taken place after then, the fight would be a lot more interesting.

In short, if you want to see every DBZ movie, then rent it. If you insist on collecting the whole series, wait until Movie Collection #4 comes out.

3 out of 5 stars If it wasn't for the fact that this was supposed to be a comedy my score would be much lower.......2005-11-23

After the pathetic joke that was DBZ movie 10, and after hearing so much negative talk about this one, I was a bit worried. Needless to say, it's not as bad as I thought, and it definitely isn't nearly as bad as the last film. Still, it's not a movie for every DBZ fan. First, if you consider this to be one of the more serious. It's not. This film is pretty much a pure comedic one. Heck, the main characters are Goten and Trunks, so there's already a clue it's going to be more humor than anything else. The plot is also humor-based. Mr. Satan's jealous cousin blackmails him to visiting his island to face his warriors, or else he'll reveal embarassing secrets about his childhood to the world. Goten and Trunks tag along, pretty much for the heck of it, and 18 follows as well because she wants Mr. Satan to live up to his promise of paying her for throwing the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai. Unfortunately, Jaga Bada(said cousin) has a secret weapon: a clone of saiyajin powerhouse Broly. It turns out one of the movie 10 characters found whatever was left of him after the 10th film and gave it Bada. Thus, our selection of heroes definitely , especially since there's none of the usual DBZ heavyhitters around this time.

Not that it all works out, especially since it is more humor based(a reason I hated the first few arcs in original DB). Broly's clone, for example, starts out looking like the original, but for some incredibly stupid reason gets taken and turned into a sad rip-off of Swamp Thing. The way he's defeated is probably even worse than his new design. There's also a ton of pointless errors as well. For example, since when does Trunks know the Kamehameha? The number of errors like these(and there's a lot) pretty much leave this one as a rental at best.

Oh well, next year's when things get good, especially after 2005's letdown. 2006 will have both the Fusion movie with Janemba and Gogeta that's been spoiled over and over in the US DBZ video games, as well as my favorite film, Dragon Fist(the movie with Tapion). Just have patience, because soon we're finally going to see the proverbial cloud's silver lining.

2 out of 5 stars No Hand on the Tiller..........2002-02-04

Watching this film was an exercise in frustration. So much of it works, and then so much of it doesn't, but would have if it weren't for the other parts.

Set sometime at the turn of the century when Britain still had control over parts of China, the story follows a young man's rise to prominence in gangland. One interesting early scene takes place in a dance club and features a pure retro swing band. The hero is the embodiment of a handsome youth as they might have looked before 1930, as he plays drums on a dance number. A rival gang tries to break things up, and the film goes downhill soon after the ensuing fight.

I got the feeling that the movie wanted to be all things to all people; martial arts film, light comedy, light drama, romance, violent gangster flick. The film has elements of all, in what can only be described as a jarring jump through all of these afore-mentioned genres and back again.

Initially, I was really hooked. The film came off as a "Once Upon a Time in China" type of film. Broad, epic, fun. There's even a great duel over a pocketwatch that takes place on an open horse-drawn carriage racing down a road. Throughout the film, there are other equally brilliant fights, though they lean towards violent gore rather than the fun, skill-testing combat of the first fight sequence.

Frankly, I felt cheated. The first two fights or so had such great promise, along with a OUATIC-type of storytelling style; light, fun, but serious. Then there are seriously gory fights, shootouts, graphic swordplay, and even a brief rape scene, that make the film appear to be a gangster film with "beautiful" film violence. Then it goes back to light comedy, then romance, graphic violence, light drama, comedy, romance, graphic violence, comedy, then more violence. These styles do not usually flow together very well, and I don't think they do in this case, either. All are marvelously handled, which made things even more frustrating despite the skills on display all around. As a graphic, violent mob movie, it works. As a light, fun drama, it also works. As a romantic comedy, it works. As a romantic drama, it works. As all four, it fails.

Cinematography throughout is excellent. Visually, the direction is brilliant. Story-wise, the film is a choppy mish-mosh, and that's the real tragedy. If only the director could have settled on one storytelling style, this could have been a classic Hong Kong film right alongside the OUATIC series, classic crime saga, or classic romance. As it is, there are three or four different storytelling styles mashed together, creating disappointment instead of joy.

If only the director could have kept his hand on the tiller and steered the film in one direction or the other, I'd have been a lot happier with this purchase.

As previously mentioned, the climactic fight is indeed cut for no apparent reason. Probably a transfer error rather than editing done on purpose.

3 out of 5 stars good film, okay action, horrible editing.......2001-06-01

this was a great film to watch, moments of humor, lots of action including good but not great kung fu, guns, swords, horses... epic story of friendship, love, betrayal, redemption. takeshi kaneshiro is a good lead in an action movie but doesn't rank with jet, jackie, sammo, or yuen in terms of actual fighting. his charm and looks make up for it though.

the one awful thing about this movie is the last fight scene. they simply don't show a very important part of it, a crucial scene for every action movie. i don't know how it could have been cut because of violence or blood because there was plenty of both throughout the film. it was almost as if they wanted to deny the viewer the satisfaction, and i heard from other online sources that this is the only english version of the film. it really makes you mad cuz you sit through the entire film and they cheat you at the end.

see it if you want, and just make up your own ending.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie!.......2000-12-20

The average Hong Kong action movie is packed with fast-paced action, rehashed plots and poor dialogue. This movie escaped that stereotype by incorporating another dimension. In addition to the lightening fast fight scenes and well done stunts, the movie boasted a well developed, fairly fresh plot. I haven't seen another Hong Kong mafia movie that can compare with this one. I recommend this movie to those who are tired of the antiquated you-killed-my-teacher genre and are looking for something with a little more substance.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing is better.......2006-08-07

Alright, here's whats up with the movie. IT ROCKS! There is tons of action and some of these people don't know what the heck they are talking about when they give it 3 or lower stars because it is the best.DBZ fans you must buy this movie.Trust me.

Listen to a true DBZ fan. It starts of with Piccolo doing his meatitation thing when Gohan and Icoris come by and start dancing and Gohan whistels which hurts Piccolo. Then Piccolo senses a strong power. Goku and Krillen try to stop it but don't make a difference.

Then Gohan and some of the others come and see what happened but the powerful warriors come out and it is up to Gohan to win but it isn't enough. I don't wanna give that much away but later on Goku comes and fights Lord Slug. With Gohan down for the count. Krillen to tired to fight and Piccolo out of energy it is up to Goku to put Lord Slug in his place. Can he do it or is this the end for the Earth? Find out on this exciting movie.
