The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie was released in 1991 under the title This Is the Super Saiya-jin, Son Goku. Goku and Krillin use their powers to deflect a giant asteroid from striking the Earth. But the asteroid is really the ship of the evil Lord Slug, who bullies Gohan and Bulma to get the Dragon Balls and obtain the eternal youth he desires. The newly regenerated Slug begins to "terrafreeze" Earth, killing inhabitants and transforming the planet into a gargantuan space vessel. During their inevitable duel, Goku learns that the now-gigantic Lord Slug is the last member of a race of "super Namek-jins." Goku eventually defeats him with some help from Gohan and Piccolo. For the U.S. release, Funimation has added an intrusive rock soundtrack--and five minutes of obnoxious commercials at the beginning of the tape. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Considerable cartoon violence, drug use. --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
My favorite DBZ movie........2007-06-13
I consider myself a huge DBZ fan, and this is my favorite movie. Unfortunately, being the best DBZ movie isn't saying much. However, as far as the single-mindedness of the DBZ movies go, this is the most entertaining. Since it was released in America at the height of the DBZ craze, it benefits from probably the highest production values. Most notably, the music. It features music from Disturbed and Deftones, which are implemented well.
Fun Fact:
Even the edited version of Lord Slug that was shown on Adult Swim featured the Uncut version of a Disturbed song, so the F-Word was actually on Cartoon Network. Somebody should lose there job over that. Haha.
The worst DBZ movie?.......2007-03-20
This movie is by far nowhere near the worst DBZ movie. That spot is reserved for Bio Broly. Nobody can deny that the plot in this one was used already but the action more than makes up for this. The earth was about to be destroyed by a passing comet. Goku and Krillin save the planet from destruction. This is only a prelude for the things to come. A group of warriors invade the earth led by Lord Slug. This results in a very heated battle between Goku and Lord Slug. The battle was good from beginning to end. It also had a pretty decent soundtrack. The only problem with this movie is the same problem with all the movies. It just doesn't fit in the timeline. Still it was a pretty solid movie, and saying that its unwatchable is bananas. If your a fan take advantage of that cheap price and pick this up.
Japanese Version rocks,english version okay.......2007-01-04
Okay I've heard alot about DBZ movie 4- Lord Slug over the years, from it being the worse DBZ movie to date,to being unwatchable. Well I finally decided to check it out,and I have to say this movie is pretty good. I watch the english version of the movie first and it was okay, the voice acting is pretty good. The only regrets that I have concerning the english version and the reason I gave this movie 3 stars instead of 5 is because, the music is not that good for the english version, you might have a couple of music cues that are good, but nothing to be giddy about. Also, for some strange reason, the people at funimation always tend to put corney dialogue in and say things that just aren't ment to be said,or for that matter just doesn't make since. After I watch the english version,I immediatley went back and watch the japanese version,it was like a rebirth of some sorts, because the music was great and the dialogue made perfect since, and situatons were explain more clearly. Why funi didn't use the japanese script instead of the english one I will never know. If funi had kept the original japanese score along with the japanese script the english version would've been awesome! Maybe they'll rerelease all the DBZ movies and have the option of listening to at least the japanese track along with the english voice cast, and knowing the way funi likes to make money they probably will.
Totally average as far as Dragon Ball Z movies go.......2006-10-11
Lord Slug (1991.) The fourth Dragon Ball Z movie.
INTRODUCTION:
The Dragon Ball Z series is one of the finest animes out there, as any fan of Japanese animation will tell you. The series has a "love it or hate it" reputation, but those fans who get into the series are totally immersed by it for a number of reasons. Young people love the series for the fast-paced action and adventure, while older fans enjoy it for the sheer number of characters, and the way they are developed and evolve over the course of time. It's no wonder the series is considered Akira Toriyama's magnum opus, and by far the best of the three Dragon Ball series. When Toei animation made Dragon Ball into an anime, they didn't copy Toriyama's mangas verbatim. They added in many sagas and plot elements not in the manga, often as a result so that the manga and anime were released at the same pace. Toei even created movies based on the series! There were thirteen movies, two television specials, and one OVA/OAV. While not usually canon to the storyline, they are an undeniable part of the Dragon Ball Z franchise that can't be ignored.
OVERVIEW:
Dragon Ball Z Movie Four, Lord Slug, was released in Japan on March 19, 1991. The movie was first released in America on August 7, 2001. It is the fourth of the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies. The original Japanese title translates to something like "Super Saiya-Jin Son Goku." The opening for the Japanese version of the movie is Cha La Head Cha La, but it's the alternate, movies-only opening ending with the scene of Goku holding his bow. The ending animation features newly-created footage of the characters, and a unique piece of music.
THE STORY:
The time period is one following the fight against Nappa and Vegeta, and one before the Z fighters depart for Namek. It is also set after Movie Three, The Tree Of Might, since Gohan's dragon appears. Earth is nearly pummeled by a meteor, but Kamehameha blasts by Goku and Krillin save the day. But this was only the beginning of the problem. From the meteor comes Lord Slug, an aging but still super-powerful evil Namekian. He has his sights set on capturing the Earth and turning it into his new mobile base planet, as well as getting the Dragon Balls to reclaim his youth.
REVIEW OF STORY:
Many people say this is the worst Dragon Ball Z movie. I'm not necessarily saying they're wrong, but I am going to say that they are far too critical and harsh. I found it to be quite enjoyable. Definitely not the best Dragon Ball Z movie, but still far from being a bad one. The greatest strength of this movie would have to be the battle scenes involving Piccolo. I won't spoil anything here, but he has some awesome scenes. And let's not forget the classic "Whistle Of Doom" so many fans speak highly of. Classic stuff. Sadly, when people say the movie is plagued with weaknesses, they aren't totally wrong. The main bad guy is underdeveloped as a character, as are his henchmen. This alone makes the movie less fun to watch. And let's be realistic, the whole "alien invader" thing has been done to death, and not just in Dragon Ball Z. In some places, this feature feels like a really cheesy fifties science fiction movie. The movie also tends to drag on longer than necessary. And the ending... let's just say it's not much different than the ending to the two movies that followed this one. And despite the (original Japanese) title of the film, Goku never becomes a Super Saiyan in the movie (though he does come close at one point.) What it comes down to is an average Dragon Ball Z movie. Not horrible, not great.
OFFICIAL?
I don't consider any of the movies official to the Dragon Ball Z storyline, since Akira Toriyama himself didn't create them, not to mention the fact they don't usually fit into the storyline. This is no exception. The small gap between the Saiyan and Frieza sagas is the only time this one could take place, but Piccolo (who was killed by Nappa) is alive, automatically rendering it false. And Gohan's dragon appears, who was introduced in the non-canon Tree Of Might movie. As such, this movie could only take place in an alternate universe in which no good guys are killed in the Saiyan Saga, and in which Tree Of Might also took place.
REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Why couldn't get get interviews with cast and crew, or trivia/facts, something like that? FUNimation has a lot of room to improve on the DVDs.
THE DUBBED VERSION:
Lots of people tend to bash FUNimation's dub of the Dragon Ball Z series? Why? It's inaccurate and sometimes just plain stupid. Not to mention there are times when the choice of voice actors is questionable. They have a tendency to add in too much unneeded extra dialogue. For instance, following the scene where Piccolo yells at Gohan to stop whistling, in the original Japanese version he says nothing more, while in the dub he APOLOGIZES AND TELLS HIM THE WHISTLING WASN'T BAD? WTF!? That's not the Piccolo I know and love. And did I neglect to mention that FUNimation rerecorded the whistling? Not a really big deal, but it was widely expected that the original whistling would be kept intact in the dub. Another example is Bulma looking up after the meteor scene when the fragments are falling to Earth. She's ENJOYING IT in the dub, saying it's pretty. This is a total change from the real version in which she's in a total state of shock. There's stupid dialogue around every corner in the dub. Why is it FUNimation can do great dubbed versions of other animes (Full Metal Alchemist comes to mind) but they can't ever do it for Dragon Ball Z? Topping off the crap fest that is the dubbed version is the music. We don't get the original Japanese music in the dubbed version. We get some rather lame, standard-fare instrumental sequences (if you've watched it on Cartoon Network you'll know what I'm talking about.) And that's not the worst of it. The soundtrack is NU METAL. Come on! If I want to listen to Disturbed, I'll pop in their CD. This kind of music has no place in Dragon Ball Z, and it greatly detracts from the original intended movie. Do I even have to say it? Watch the Japanese version.
OVERALL:
Overall this is a good package. Not the best Dragon Ball Z move, and certainly not the best DVD release of Dragon Ball Z content, but overall I'm satisfied. It's not one of the best movies, however, so I really can only recommend this one to die-hard fans of the series who can't get enough.
EDITION NOTES:
Two versions of this were released: Edited and Uncut. Obviously, buy uncut. The DVD isn't as readily available as it once was, but is still fairly easy to find. Used stores that buy anime DVDs, online and in-person, should have it.
Nothing is better.......2006-08-07
Alright, here's whats up with the movie. IT ROCKS! There is tons of action and some of these people don't know what the heck they are talking about when they give it 3 or lower stars because it is the best.DBZ fans you must buy this movie.Trust me.
Listen to a true DBZ fan. It starts of with Piccolo doing his meatitation thing when Gohan and Icoris come by and start dancing and Gohan whistels which hurts Piccolo. Then Piccolo senses a strong power. Goku and Krillen try to stop it but don't make a difference.
Then Gohan and some of the others come and see what happened but the powerful warriors come out and it is up to Gohan to win but it isn't enough. I don't wanna give that much away but later on Goku comes and fights Lord Slug. With Gohan down for the count. Krillen to tired to fight and Piccolo out of energy it is up to Goku to put Lord Slug in his place. Can he do it or is this the end for the Earth? Find out on this exciting movie.

DBZ hits rock bottom..........2007-02-06
The movies peaked with Brolly - Legendary Super Saiyan and have sharply declined in both story quality and action ever since. I only finished watching this film out of sheer morbid curiosity and was sorry I did so. This movie did not add to the series in any way, shape, or form. Yeah, I am aware that it is supposed to be funny, but they usually balance comedy with action, but this movie just stunk. Trunks and Goten are ok in small doses, but this was just too much. Fortunately there is a light at the end of the tunnel - Wrath of the Dragon is awsome (I have seen the Japanese version) and I look forward to them ending the US release of the series on a good note.

OVERVIEW:
This is the eleventh the thirteen Dragon Ball Z movies.
THE STORY:
At the conclusion of the second Broly movie, he was killed. For good. But he was cloned. An old rival of Mr. Satan has cloned Broly to get revenge on his old rival for grudges they held against each other back in the old days. Just as Android 18 is about to sock it to Mr. Satan for not paying her the money he owes her, he is taken away for the Bio Warrior challenge. Goten, Trunks, and 18 follow - not knowing that what lies ahead is the return of one of their strongest foes.
REVIEW OF STORY:
Broly didn't need a sequel. He certainly didn't need two sequels. This is generally regarded as the worst of all the Dragon Ball Z movies. I am inclined to agree. While it has its moments, it was an unneeded sequel that should never have been made. Once again, with a focus on Goten and Trunks, it's more funny than serious. Don't bother with this one unless you want the complete Dragon Ball Z movie catalogue.
OFFICIAL?
Since the first Broly movie wasn't canon, his sequels are automatically fake. However, this movie and its predecessor could have taken place right around the time before the World Tournament prior to the arrival of Babidi took place. But for that to work, the first Broly movie would have to have taken place, which doesn't fit into the storyline at all. So ultimately I have to say this film isn't canon.
REVIEW OF DVD:
All of FUNimation's Dragon Ball Z DVDs are pretty much the same as far as content goes. There is no bonus content, unless you consider the obligatory trailers on the DVD to be bonus material. And honestly, I could have lived without them. Some more recent DVDs have character profiles, though these are lacking and could have been written better.
They can do good dubbed versions for plenty of other animes, such as Full Metal Alchemist, but every time they've tried dubbing Toriyama's classic, they butcher it to hell. The nu metal they put in as background music only further defiles the original series. Stick with the uncut subbed track.
OVERALL:
Overall this is a decent package, but not one of the better movies. Get it only if you want to see the continuation of the Broly story, or if you're a completist who wants all the Z movies.
EDITION NOTES:
All three Broly movies were reissued in a cheap, affordable three pack! Get the three pack, because you'll be getting three movies for the price of one!
Chould have been better.......2006-02-05
Dragon ball Z moives have always been full of action but I am sorry to say that this one is mostly comday. The moives is about when one of hercules old freinds Invites him to challenge some of his bio wriorrs.Meanwhile trunks and goten sneak along and try to see whants going on only to learn that he has truned broly into a bio!The thing that really made me mad was that the fighting only last for 15 minuits. But still the jokes are pretty funny but stick the orginal broly or broly 2.P.S.This is uncut so it's not sutible for all kids.
More like Boring-Broly.......2005-12-17
I am a fan of DBZ, I am a fan of Goten, I think Hercule is funny and I think #18 is hot. Yet this movie sucked! It was missing what makes DBZ so great: lots of action and a great plot. Broly is overused and this completely ruins him. Like most DBZ movies, it doesn't fit into the timeline. If we worked it in, then Goten and Trunks would only be a matter of hours away from using the Fusion technique. Had this movie taken place after then, the fight would be a lot more interesting.
In short, if you want to see every DBZ movie, then rent it. If you insist on collecting the whole series, wait until Movie Collection #4 comes out.
If it wasn't for the fact that this was supposed to be a comedy my score would be much lower.......2005-11-23
After the pathetic joke that was DBZ movie 10, and after hearing so much negative talk about this one, I was a bit worried. Needless to say, it's not as bad as I thought, and it definitely isn't nearly as bad as the last film. Still, it's not a movie for every DBZ fan. First, if you consider this to be one of the more serious. It's not. This film is pretty much a pure comedic one. Heck, the main characters are Goten and Trunks, so there's already a clue it's going to be more humor than anything else. The plot is also humor-based. Mr. Satan's jealous cousin blackmails him to visiting his island to face his warriors, or else he'll reveal embarassing secrets about his childhood to the world. Goten and Trunks tag along, pretty much for the heck of it, and 18 follows as well because she wants Mr. Satan to live up to his promise of paying her for throwing the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai. Unfortunately, Jaga Bada(said cousin) has a secret weapon: a clone of saiyajin powerhouse Broly. It turns out one of the movie 10 characters found whatever was left of him after the 10th film and gave it Bada. Thus, our selection of heroes definitely , especially since there's none of the usual DBZ heavyhitters around this time.
Not that it all works out, especially since it is more humor based(a reason I hated the first few arcs in original DB). Broly's clone, for example, starts out looking like the original, but for some incredibly stupid reason gets taken and turned into a sad rip-off of Swamp Thing. The way he's defeated is probably even worse than his new design. There's also a ton of pointless errors as well. For example, since when does Trunks know the Kamehameha? The number of errors like these(and there's a lot) pretty much leave this one as a rental at best.
Oh well, next year's when things get good, especially after 2005's letdown. 2006 will have both the Fusion movie with Janemba and Gogeta that's been spoiled over and over in the US DBZ video games, as well as my favorite film, Dragon Fist(the movie with Tapion). Just have patience, because soon we're finally going to see the proverbial cloud's silver lining.

No Hand on the Tiller..........2002-02-04
Watching this film was an exercise in frustration. So much of it works, and then so much of it doesn't, but would have if it weren't for the other parts.
Set sometime at the turn of the century when Britain still had control over parts of China, the story follows a young man's rise to prominence in gangland. One interesting early scene takes place in a dance club and features a pure retro swing band. The hero is the embodiment of a handsome youth as they might have looked before 1930, as he plays drums on a dance number. A rival gang tries to break things up, and the film goes downhill soon after the ensuing fight.
I got the feeling that the movie wanted to be all things to all people; martial arts film, light comedy, light drama, romance, violent gangster flick. The film has elements of all, in what can only be described as a jarring jump through all of these afore-mentioned genres and back again.
Initially, I was really hooked. The film came off as a "Once Upon a Time in China" type of film. Broad, epic, fun. There's even a great duel over a pocketwatch that takes place on an open horse-drawn carriage racing down a road. Throughout the film, there are other equally brilliant fights, though they lean towards violent gore rather than the fun, skill-testing combat of the first fight sequence.
Frankly, I felt cheated. The first two fights or so had such great promise, along with a OUATIC-type of storytelling style; light, fun, but serious. Then there are seriously gory fights, shootouts, graphic swordplay, and even a brief rape scene, that make the film appear to be a gangster film with "beautiful" film violence. Then it goes back to light comedy, then romance, graphic violence, light drama, comedy, romance, graphic violence, comedy, then more violence. These styles do not usually flow together very well, and I don't think they do in this case, either. All are marvelously handled, which made things even more frustrating despite the skills on display all around. As a graphic, violent mob movie, it works. As a light, fun drama, it also works. As a romantic comedy, it works. As a romantic drama, it works. As all four, it fails.
Cinematography throughout is excellent. Visually, the direction is brilliant. Story-wise, the film is a choppy mish-mosh, and that's the real tragedy. If only the director could have settled on one storytelling style, this could have been a classic Hong Kong film right alongside the OUATIC series, classic crime saga, or classic romance. As it is, there are three or four different storytelling styles mashed together, creating disappointment instead of joy.
If only the director could have kept his hand on the tiller and steered the film in one direction or the other, I'd have been a lot happier with this purchase.
As previously mentioned, the climactic fight is indeed cut for no apparent reason. Probably a transfer error rather than editing done on purpose.
good film, okay action, horrible editing.......2001-06-01
this was a great film to watch, moments of humor, lots of action including good but not great kung fu, guns, swords, horses... epic story of friendship, love, betrayal, redemption. takeshi kaneshiro is a good lead in an action movie but doesn't rank with jet, jackie, sammo, or yuen in terms of actual fighting. his charm and looks make up for it though.
the one awful thing about this movie is the last fight scene. they simply don't show a very important part of it, a crucial scene for every action movie. i don't know how it could have been cut because of violence or blood because there was plenty of both throughout the film. it was almost as if they wanted to deny the viewer the satisfaction, and i heard from other online sources that this is the only english version of the film. it really makes you mad cuz you sit through the entire film and they cheat you at the end.
see it if you want, and just make up your own ending.
Excellent Movie!.......2000-12-20
The average Hong Kong action movie is packed with fast-paced action, rehashed plots and poor dialogue. This movie escaped that stereotype by incorporating another dimension. In addition to the lightening fast fight scenes and well done stunts, the movie boasted a well developed, fairly fresh plot. I haven't seen another Hong Kong mafia movie that can compare with this one. I recommend this movie to those who are tired of the antiquated you-killed-my-teacher genre and are looking for something with a little more substance.
