Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
Jackie Chan's most dramatic work casts him as a no-nonsense undercover cop on the trail of a ruthless gang of kidnappers who discovers that a respected figure in his own department may be involved with the criminals. In this film based on a true story, director Kirk Wong brings a gritty sense of realism to the action-filled police thriller while allowing plenty of opportunities for Jackie to show his stuff, notably in the bravura climax, a solo battle with the gang that culminates in a raging fire that devours a creaky apartment complex around them. Wong's sleek, hard-edged style meshes well with Jackie's acrobatic vigor, and Chan proves to be an adept and effective dramatic performer. However, fans expecting his trademark physical gags and comic interludes may be disappointed. This is a startlingly different side of the versatile Mr. Chan, and his performance helps make this grim "policier" one of the best serious Hong Kong action thrillers to date. --Sean Axmaker

When the first season of Crime Story ended spectacularly in the Nevada desert, it was anyone's guess what season 2 would do for an encore. With low first-season ratings and conservative watchdogs complaining about its violence, the show received a surprise renewal that necessitated the "miraculous" return of mob-boss Ray Luca (Anthony Denison) and his dimwit sidekick Pauli Taglia (played by former Chicago burglar John Santucci). Moving from 10:00 p.m. Fridays to a new 10:00 p.m. Tuesday-night timeslot on NBC, the Michael Mann-produced series continued its ratings decline, and this lent the series a giddy, go-for-broke quality that held plenty of surprises. The year is 1966, and Chicago Police Lt. Mike Torello (Dennis Farina) and his close-knit Major Crimes Unit continues to track Luca's criminal activities in Las Vegas, where additional complications fueled a number of dynamic, stand-alone episodes, beginning with season opener "The Senator, the Movie Star and the Mob," guest-starring Kevin Spacey (in his first major TV role) and Jenny Wright (Near Dark) in a sordid, mob-connected plot with obvious parallels to Bobby Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. This established the neon-lit, casino-and-nightclub milieu of the season, and Luca's reappearance set the season in volatile motion.
The series' daring, pulp-fictional style attracted an impressive array of guests stars and newcomers, some of whom (like 24's Dennis Haysbert) would later appear in Michael Mann's films. Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs) reprises his role as burglar-turned-rocker Frank Holman; Margaret Avery (The Color Purple) and NYPD Blue's James McDaniel are superb in the racial-tension plot of "Seize the Time"; Laura San Giacomo (sex, lies, and videotape) aces her role as Luca's former flame in "Protected Witness"; and Elias Koteas delivers a fine performance in "Roadrunner," an exciting road-thriller episode that showcases Farina's skill with hardboiled comedy. (For the record, other noteworthy guest stars include Pam Grier, David Hyde Pierce, Billy Zane, David Soul, Steven Weber, Michael Jeter, and recurring performances by Andrew Dice Clay and Rolling Stone editor Jann S. Wenner.) "Pauli Taglia's Dream" is an outrageous experiment in all-out delirium, focusing on Santucci's scene-stealing character and providing a wacky lead-up to the season's climactic story arc, which leads Luca and Torello to their ultimate showdown in an unspecified Latin American country full of corruptible drug-trade politicians.
Of course, any innovative series has a few drawbacks: The violent shootouts turn somewhat redundant as the season progresses, and while Torello's gun-toting crew is brought to life by a perfect supporting cast (Bill Smitrovich, Ray Butler, Steve Ryan, and a young Bill Campbell), there was never enough time (or episodes) to properly develop their characters. The turncoat betrayal of lawyer David Abrams (superbly played by Stephen Lang) is never fully convincing (you just know he's not a bad guy), and when Crime Story's cancellation inevitably came to pass, the final-episode cliffhanger of "Going Home" (broadcast May 10, 1988) left frustrated fans with unanswered questions and nowhere else to go. It's especially regrettable, then, that this four-DVD set offers no extras whatsoever. The fact that Farina, Denison, Mann, and series cocreators Chuck Adamson and Gustave Reininger were not invited to do audio commentaries represents a missed opportunity of epic proportions. We can be grateful, however, that the series' pop-music soundtrack (chosen by the great Al Kooper, credited as "Guy Who Picks Music for the Show") remains intact and unchanged as an essential ingredient to one of the best TV shows of the 1980s. --Jeff Shannon

Vegas, Baby!.......2007-03-11
Just when I thought it was as good as it could be, the best cop show ever on TV kicked it up a notch by moving the action from the gritty streets of Chicago to the neon Babylon of Las Vegas. In the second season of Crime Story, Dennis Farina is as macho as ever, Anthony Denison takes evil to a whole new level, and the rest of the cast are unparalleled in acting ability. I gave seasons one and two to my husband as a gift over a month ago, and he hasn't stopped watching them since. If you like cop shows, the Sopranos, or even the sixties, you gotta see this!
Glad to have found this.......2007-02-20
When "Crime Story" starring Dennis Farina and Anthony Dennison came out in 1986, I was instantly hooked, and could not wait until the next episode. Once the show ended, I was disappointed and caught re-runs when I could.
Now, after searching for hard to find and expensive VHS sets, I opted instead for the DVD sets which have both seasons. This show was, IMO definitely a precursor to "The Sopranos" and other great crime shows and Dramas that have since won legions of followers. If you were/are an ardent fan of the series or any other crime/mobster films, these DVD sets are a must have for your collection.
Sensational.......2007-01-19
As with Season 1 the action and intrigue is non-stop.It was such a pity that the show was cancelled after 2 seasons!
We will be lucky to see another series as good as this in our lifetimes!
Absolutely Fabulous!!.......2006-07-03
This DVD of Crime Story made me realize how great TV series can be. Dennis Farino is excellent as are the cast members. This was a totally unplanned purchase and it brought me back to fine television. I recommend this for anyone who appreciates good music, great plots and classic cars.
Glad to see it on DVD but a Disappointing Transfer.......2006-04-25
I had read a few reviews here regarding the DVD versions of Crime Story, including some that commented on the poor visual quality of these transfers, but still purchased these anyway for the content, hoping those reviewers were real nitpickers. Sadly, I have to agree. While not dark and muddy as one reviewer described, they are strangely flat, lacking the contrast and brilliance one expects on a DVD. In addition, there is an annoying pattern to the image, much like if it were being viewed through a very sheer cloth, or projected onto a cloth screen. Not graininess, but definitely a faint weave-like pattern. The sound is also a bit muddy. The content is still why I bought these, but the quality is definitely not anywhere near what you'd expect. In fact, the first two seasons of Superman from the 1950's put the quality of these DVD transfers to shame. I haven't run across the song substitutions yet that have been mentioned, and my memory might not be good enough to notice those. The Del Shannon rework of Runaway is still intact at the start of each episode.

Conceived as a "22-hour movie for television," the incendiary first season of Crime Story (1986-87, on NBC) marked a controversial milestone in TV history, and its lasting influence can be seen in such better-known series and films as The Sopranos, Homicide: Life on the Street, Donnie Brasco, Casino and elsewhere. The season-long story arc followed Chicago Police detective Lt. Mike Torello (Dennis Farina) and his tireless pursuit of fast-rising mob boss Ray Luca (Anthony Denison) from Chicago to Las Vegas, circa 1963-64. Heading the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) with his hand-picked team of detectives (including fresh-faced Bill Campbell, long before Once and Again) and passionate public defender David Abrams (Stephen Lang), Torello moves from city to federal jurisdiction as Crime Story unfolds its post-Kennedy scenario with stark, often brutal authenticity, pausing for stand-alone episodes that propelled the Torello/Luca rivalry while showcasing such up-and-coming guest stars as David Caruso (in the electrifying pilot), Gary Sinise (who also directed two episodes), Ving Rhames, Lorraine Bracco, and 19-year-old Julia Roberts, who shows early promise as a sexually abused teenager in "The Survivor," a typical example of the show's emphasis on character depth and gritty, hard-hitting plotlines.
Riding high on the success of Miami Vice, executive producer Michael Mann (who helmed the penultimate episode "Top of the World") had several aces up his sleeve: Cocreator Chuck Adamson had been a legendary Chicago detective; Farina was an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police before he switched to acting; and Luca's dim-witted Mafia sidekick, Pauli Taglia, was played by John Santucci, who had been one of Chicago's most notorious criminals in the 1960s. All of this--along with James A. Contner's color-saturated, mostly nocturnal cinematography--guaranteed that Crime Story would be unique for its time, earning controversy (over its rugged depiction of violent cops) and just enough ratings against ABC's Moonlighting to win a second-season reprieve. Unfortunately, Anchor Bay's budget-conscious DVDs represent a missed opportunity: Crammed onto four discs with five episodes each (with the pilot on a separate disc), the transfers barely rival VHS quality, and costly music rights resulted in song replacements that loyal viewers will regret. Lack of chapter indexing and a perfunctory background essay do little justice to a landmark TV series that deserved a full-featured release on DVD. Those caveats aside, Crime Story can be appreciated as an ambitious American epic that still packs a wallop. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Following the phenomenal success of MIAMI VICE, Executive Producer Michael Mann returned to television with a new kind of gritty crime drama, one that talked tougher and hit harder than anything the small screen had ever seen before. For two explosive seasons, CRIME STORY told the hard-boiled saga of hair-trigger cop Lieutenant Mike Torello [Dennis Farina] and his obsessive pursuit of ruthless gangster Ray Luca [Anthony Denison] from the mean streets of early '60s Chicago to the neon nights of mob-run Las Vegas. Today, CRIME STORY is considered a true cult classic as well as one of the most startling series in television history. THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON features a stellar supporting cast that includes Stephen Lang, Bill Campbell, Ted Levine, Darlanne Fluegel and Joseph Wiseman, and such guest stars as David Caruso, Michael Madsen, Pam Grier,Ving Rhames, Lorraine Bracco, Gary Sinise, Deborah Harry, Vincent Gallo and Julia Roberts.
Customer Reviews:
One of my all-time favorite TV shows.......2007-04-20
I used to love "Crime Story" when it was on TV and was both disappointed and disgusted when the show ended as it did (those of you who know, probably agree). Not since "The Untouchables" had a crime drama dealt with organized crime and the cops who bust them in such a compelling way. But where Robert Stack's Ness was stoic, straight, and incorruptable, Farina's Turillo is willing to do whatever it takes to nab his prey, blurring the line between who he is, a cop, and those whom he pursues, the criminal.
Well, now I own the first season of the show and can enjoy it as much as I like. Watching it on DVD reminds me of how great the film really was, how it captured the mood of an era - and it just wasn't period music being played in the background.
Dennis Farina's cop against Anthony Dennison's hood is a great story of near epic proportions as Turillo's obsession in busting Ray Lucca finally consumes him. Thinking about it, could the series have ended any other way? (No, this is not a spoiler, consider it a tease).
What can I say? If you love crime dramas - this is the show for you. Even if you don't love crime dramas, you might find this a pleasant surprise. It's good TV, good story telling, and reminds one of what TV can do when it really tries.
Can that Michael Mann (Miami Vice, Last of the Mohicans, Heat) tell a story or what?
Best Cop Show Ever.......2007-03-11
Best cop show ever on TV, period. Except this isn't really a TV show. It's really a film masquerading as a TV show. This program has it all: flawless directing, exquisite camera work, sublime acting, superb music. Dennis Farina as Lt. Turello makes Clint Eastwood look like a little girl, while Anthony Denison as Ray Luca is the epitome of Machiavellian evil. I gave Seasons One and Two to my husband as a Valentine's gift, and a month later, he's still watching. It's the gift that keeps on giving!
Timeless.......2007-01-19
In one word Crime Story is "Brilliant".When you realise what the majority of the cast have accomplished since,it was a starting point for many of the most acclaimed actors of our time! A must see!
Its great!.......2006-02-28
I got it for my boyfriend and I have been watching with him because I never saw it before, I'm totally wrapped-up in it...
Love this series.......2006-02-21
Crime Story was, and is, one of the best shows that TV has ever had...it was so underrated in it's day. So happy to own this box set. A must have for Crime Story lovers!

John Grisham wrote the screenplay for and produced the enjoyable Mickey, a family drama that explores--typical of the bestselling author--seemingly unresolvable conflicts between the personal and the ethical. Harry Connick Jr. plays California attorney Tripp Spence, a widower whose recent bankruptcy has come under scrutiny from the IRS. Admitting wrongdoing to his son, Derrick (Shawn Salinas), Tripp vows to avoid jail, and the two head for Las Vegas under assumed identities. Rather than stay out of sight, however, Tripp talks the manager (Mike Starr) of a first-rate Little League team into drafting Derrick, a 13-year-old, talented pitcher who claims to be younger. Soon Derrick is attracting national attention, precisely what Tripp doesn't want, yet he refuses to squelch his son's brilliant ride to the top. Hugh Wilson (Guarding Tess) directed this brisk, smart feature, which includes a generous amount of on-the-field baseball action and an intriguing subplot about Cuban ball players. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
Great Baseball Action, Decent Movie.......2007-06-18
The Good:
* Great baseball action. Much more realistic than almost every other kids baseball movie I've seen. The actors obviously know how to really play.
* Good, clean, family movie. Absolutely no foul language. No sex except one regrettable piece of audio (see below).
* Decent plot and acting for a kids' movie. Let's be honest - this isn't great cinema and isn't at the same level of dramatic effect as traditional Grisham work. But accept it for what it is and enjoy it.
The Bad:
* One unnecessary scene where the coaches forget to cut off access to adult channels in the hotel room and the scene cuts to the kids watching porn - the TV isn't shown but you hear moans and groans in the background. Just watch for the scene where the coaches are walking down the hotel hallway and mute the next 30 seconds.
* Everyone experiences the consequences of their cheating (they're stripped of the LLWS crown, the Cubans are sent away in disgrace, and Trip goes to jail), but the consequences fly by in about two minutes of film time. Pay attention or you'll miss it.
* The final scene shows Mickey reunited with his dad after Trip's year in jail, but it looks like the boys have aged about 4 years during that span. A jarring change.
* The IRS inexplicably chases down one-time tax fraud Trip but lets the career false-identity-creator go free just because he tells the feds what Trip's new name is.
* The little league coach is incompetent and portrayed as obviously overmatched and visibly overcome with nerves in every big game. The kids, though, are as cool as the other side of the pillow. Typical kids movie device, much as I hate it.
Mickey - a family baseball story.......2007-03-25
Mickey is the story about a father and son forced to move and change their identities. This is a family movie that all ages can watch and enjoy. The storyline sounds familiar and one that you may have heard times before but the ending is not what you expect.
Harry Connick Jr does a good job as the father on the run. The supporting cast does a good job of portraying their characters and engaging you in the story.
Mickey-A Family Story.......2007-03-15
THis is a great family movie for all ages. Not only is it about sports, but it teaches lessons on honesty and family values. My whole family loves it!!!
I just couldn't get into this movie.......2007-03-13
It is rated family but I though otherwise. The main character is running from the law. He has talked his son into playing illegally. He doesn't come clean until he absolutely HAS to.
One more season.......2006-06-09
I was stunned that this movie captured the same sentiments I had when watching my sons play baseball. There is nothing like the culmination of a twelve-year olds season, the tournaments on the road, and under the lights. It is a good story for young (and seasoned) athletes of any sport, of any game: The consequences of making a decision are complex, and go way beyond the moment in time and space. And, yeah!! the players weren't faking; they were real!

A devastatingly skillful and emotionally compelling documentary, The Times of Harvey Milk charts the political rise and brutal slaying of the first openly gay city official in the United State, Harvey Milk. Ironically, the same election that brought Milk to the board of city supervisors of San Francisco also elected the man who killed him, a former police officer and fireman named Dan White. After White shot both Mayor George Moscone and Milk, his defense lawyers convinced the jury that White's judgment was impaired by depression and junk food, resulting in a conviction for manslaughter instead of murder--a verdict that prompted riots. With care and conviction, The Times of Harvey Milk captures not only Milk himself, but also the political and social landscape in which these events took place. The interviews--with friends, politicians, and journalists--are articulate and heartfelt, expressing the impact that Milk had upon this historical moment. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
A Hero for Us.......2006-12-31
"THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK"
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
One of the finest gay documentaries to come along in the last few years is undoubtedly "The Times of Harvey Milk". Through interviews with his friends, acquaintances and people from the world of politics, the film brings Milk to life and shows him to be the inspiration that he was when he was alive. The movie pens with a very moving shot of Diane Feinstein announcing that "Mayor Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk have been shot and killed. From here we re taken on a tour of Milk's life and find out who the man was. As we look at the life of Milk very strong emotions come into play and the gay perspective of an openly gay elected official shot down in his prime looms before us. There is no gay propaganda here and both sides of the coin are looked at with fairness.
It seems as if the goal of the film is turn Milk into a martyr, and in a sense he was. He knew he would be assassinated. Even though, when the announcement comes that he has been shot down, there s a shock to be felt, especially when you see the reporters who upon hearing the announcement cry out in disbelief. What is even more shocking is that Dan White, who shot Milk, was found guilty any of voluntary manslaughter and eventually set free after only five and a half years in jail.
This is a stunning film and it is quite remarkable the way the story of Milk's life s pieced together and retold. The film covers a piece of America that few know about and everyone should. The movie is for all people, not just gays. It is a film about politics or San Francisco. It is about a man who was murdered at the prime of his life who happened to be a gay San Franciscan politician. The move takes you in and shows you how Milk affected lives including the life of the man who assassinated him. Just as Harvey Milk's life is impotent to us, the aftermath of his death is jest as important as seen in this amazing film. As an openly gay politician, Milk filled an important place in history. Milk was an intense person as to how he dealt with human rights. How he fit into society is amazing.
The director, Robert Epstein, has made a movie he can be proud of and the fact that it won an Oscar is validation of that. This straightforward portrait of Harvey Milk is fascinating and inspirational. It shows the tenaciousness of a man who was articulate, charming and intelligent. With gay rights being the biggest issue facing him, he fought equally of other disenfranchised groups and recognized their need to come together to fight for the rights of all. He was a hero of the entire movement for human rights and the film shows how much has changed since the film was made in 1984. Harvey Milk is a part of the history that we as members of the GLBT community have to be proud of and as long as we have this film to remind us, we know that everything is possible.
An Essential Documentary.......2006-12-09
After watching this documentary on Harvey Milk, all I could think to myself was how this story escapes high school history books. Harvey Milk is the gay community's MLK, Jr. - everyone should know about his plight for justice.
Amazing. You laugh, you cry, and you try your best to live your life with hope........2006-11-16
I just finished watching The Times of Harvey Milk and I struggle to find the right words to express how amazing this documentary is.
Focusing on Harvey Milk in the context of San Francisco and California in the 1970's, this film is as much about the gay community as it is about Milk himself.
Yet it captures Milk's passion without portraying him as a saint. He has temper tantrums, he lacks patience at times, but he calls on ALL of us, gay or straight, as members of the human condition, to make our world a better place. He calls us to see the links between the oppression of gays, asians, blacks, women, the poor, etc and challenges us to rise up in our own communities and fight for every one of these causes because it is the right thing to do.
The film is exquisitely made, using photographs, news reports, radio broadcasts, and interviews with Milk's friends and political cohorts. It reaches down into you and tears at your heart, it enrages you when White doesn't really get the full brunt of the law, and it inspires you with that most difficult of things... hope.
Interesting documentary.......2006-08-14
I didn't know a lot about the murder of San Francisco Board of Supervisor Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. At that time I was too busy raising my sons and wasn't politically minded at that time of my life. I wanted to learn more about this incident so I saw this movie.
Dan Brown (another supervisor) resigned from his position. Family, friends and supporters said he shouldn't have done that and he asked for his job back. When he heard he probably wouldn't be reinstated he killed them. He had a gun and bullets in his pockets. Yet a jury let him get away with pretty much a slap on the hand. He served only five years incarcerated. His defense was he was under pressure and eating too much junk food. The Twinkie Defense. As people said in the film, if he only assassinated Mayor George Moscone instead of also killing Harvey Milk (who was gay), he would have done hard time.
One of the faults I suppose of the jury system is that since it is a jury of your peers is that sometimes they will let you get away with a "hate crime". I feel that's is what happened in the OJ trail. I wish this could be fixed somehow.
Essential historical documentary.......2006-06-17
Robert Epstein and Richard Schmiechen have crafted an eloquent and touching documentary that brings to life a historically important political figure in our nation's history: Harvey Milk, the first openly gay public elected official in San Francisco. Milk, together with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, were assassinated in November 1978.
The film does not concentrate on a biographical portrait of Milk, but instead focuses on the eleven months he served as San Francisco supervisor. It brings life to history, albeit recent history, a quality that is lacking in so many historical documentaries. What makes this possible, in many ways, is the ample news footage that was available to trace the events that comprised those eleven months, and the personal commentary provided by witnesses and participants of the events documented. The additional footage and audio commentary that comprises this 2-DVD set sheds more light on the Harvey Milk legacy. Milk was a politician by nature, much in the same way as John Kennedy was, but without the money. It shows how much a charasmatic figure can accomplish when the mission seems clear. Milk's humor, candor, and intelligence shines through.
I first saw this film in the late 1980s on public television, and saw it a few times since. Watching it today, what shocked me the most is that Dan White, who served a little more than five years for the slayings, received no psychiatric treatment while incarcerated. White's defense attorney stated quite clearly in news footage that White was a suicide risk the day the verdict was announced. White killed himself less than two years after his release. I am clearly no apologist for Dan White, but he was failed by the very system that awarded him his freedom a scant five years after killing two men.
Milk was elected to public office in the few years after the notion of the "personal is political" became popular. Milk exemplified and capitalized on this notion brilliantly. What Milk's legacy shows me, today, is that personal authenticity is the most essential quality needed in our public officials. Integrity and intelligence springs from authenticity, as does clarity of purpose. And a sense of wit and humor is the second most essential quality. Milk possessed both.
P.S.: I thought of this after I originally posted my review. Milk was assassinated a few short years before the AIDS epidemic emerged as a public health threat within, and outside of, the gay community. Had Milk been on the scene at the time, I have no doubt he would have used his office and political power to the greatest extent possible to affect legislation and government accountibility in their response to the epidemic. His death really altered the course of history.

Customer Reviews:
Detective Story.......2007-06-25
Before "Homicide" or "Hill Street Blues" came this gritty, hard-hitting cop drama based on Sidney Kingsley's play. Honed to tense perfection by Wyler, the film is a showcase for fine, colorful ensemble acting by William Bendix (as the no-nonsense lieutenant), Lee Grant (reprising her role as a mousy shoplifter), Bert Freed (as McLeod's sensitive partner), and Joseph Wiseman (as a hilariously "innocent" Italian burglar). But it's Douglas's fierce, tragic performance as a modern lawman who still sees the world in stark black and white terms that provides the gut-twisting dramatic ironies. Absorbing and devastating, this "Story" gets under your skin and stays there.
Great vehicle for Kirk Douglas' acting talents.......2007-03-15
Kirk Douglas has always excelled in roles where he plays the maverick loner, walking the fine line between anger and insanity. Thus his role as Det. Jim McLeod in "Detective Story" is a real showcase for his acting talents. This is not a crime drama in the conventional sense where there is any real action or crime to solve, even though you have a room full of New York City police detectives on screen for just about the whole movie. Instead it is a character study of Jim McLeod, played by Kirk Douglas. McLeod's motivation in his work is not to solve crimes or even protect the innocent. Instead, he is motivated by a desire to root out evil by his definition of the word. Evil is something McLeod claims that anyone can easily spot. McLeod's world view doesn't differentiate between the one-time bad act of a basically good person, such as Arthur Kindred (Craig Hill), a young man who impulsively stole from his employer in a last ditch attempt to impress a girl he believed he loved, versus the misdeeds of a lifetime criminal, such as the homicidal maniac Charlie (Arthur Kindred), that has also been apprehended by the detective squad that same day.
When confronted by a mistake in the past of the person nearest to him, his own wife, McLeod is equally unforgiving. His rage and disgust is so great, you're not sure what bothers him more - the discovery of his wife's past or the failure of his own nose to sniff out the misdeed prior to this. By the time McLeod realizes his own inflexibility and lack of empathy have cost him what he loves the most, it is too late to undo the damage, and this leads to one last tragedy.
This is Douglas in perhaps his finest if not most huggable role, and is recommended viewing for that reason alone. William Bendix makes up for the lack of likeabilty in Douglas' character as Detective Lou Brady, who likes to temper the letter of the law with a little humanity. Then there's a very young Lee Grant as a shoplifter who just can't stop babbling. Finally, there's Horace McMahon as Lieutenant Monaghan, head of the detective squad and the kind of boss we'd all like to have. There are no extras included on this DVD.
Great Movie.......2007-01-06
Kirk Douglas as usual is very powerful. All the actors are exceptional!
There is great angst, drama and humor in this movie.
Powerful movie and subject matter.
My favorite scene is when Elenor Parker tells her husband she is leaving him because..... Watch it and see for yourself!!
Great, great, movie.
Wyler's picture never gives the impression on of being a filmed play..........2006-12-26
Adapted from a Broadway play, "Detective Story" is in the Grand Hotel genre; two of the New York actors here made their film debuts--Joseph Wiseman, as the insane, homicidal burglar, and Lee Grant, as the gay and spirited Brooklynese shoplifter...
"Detective Story" is not so much a tale of detection but a focusing on the life and character of just one detective, James McLeod (Kirk Douglas).
McLeod is no ordinary detective, he is a fanatic, dedicated to the law and excessively brutal in dealing with criminals... He is particularly upset about abortionists, and it gradually becomes apparent that this is a psychological block in his mind... Some tragic happening in his past has caused him to look upon abortionists in a pathological light, and the abortionist in this film, played by George Macready with his patent brand of quiet, sinister refinement, has a hard time in the hands of McLeod...
The abortion angle of the original play was taken to the screen, partly because of censorship, and partly because the close-up, immediacy of the camera requires rage to be clearly more explained than on the stage...
Therefore, the film abortionist is also the manipulator of an adoption ring and a farm for unwed mothers... Whenever he appears at the precinct the abortionist is accompanied by his lawyer, although he might also have hired a bodyguard, since the fist-swinging McLeod is not above encircling his suspects...
As the story progresses, the reasons for McLeod's vicious temper and his hatred for crime are revealed as deriving from his love-hate attitude toward his father, a man of crooked tendencies... His mania makes life hard for his gentle wife Mary (Eleanor Parker) to whom he is nevertheless greatly attached...
Detective McLeod is understandably shattered when he discovers that his wife was once herself the subject of an abortion, and that the man who performed the illegal operation was the abortionist now at his mercy, Karl Schneider (George Macready).
"Detective Story" is light on plot line but rich in its different cast of characters... It is, in fact, a series of character studies, one major and many minor...
Kirk Douglas carries the burden of McLeod and makes the tormented policeman painfully believable--it is almost a nonstop, swirling performance... Around him Wyler arranges an expert team of actors: William Bendix as a tough but warm-hearted veteran cop; Horace McMahon as the precinct lieutenant who tolerates the frenzy of McLeod because he realizes he is doing his job honest1y and well; Eleanor Parker as the wife, driven to near-distraction by her husband; and several weirdly amusing criminal types, of whom those played by Wiseman and Lee Grant are shining examples, all of them moving through the dirty, oppressive atmosphere of a police station on any given work day...
A Man Who Cannot Live with His Own Morals........2006-09-12
There is an irony in the title of Sidney Kingsley's play "Detective Story", written for the screen by Philip Yordan and Robert Wyler. It sounds like a story of a detective pounding his beat, visiting crime scenes and tracking down criminals on the mean streets. In fact, the action takes place within the confines of the 21st Precinct Police Headquarters in New York City. And its ideas are within the mind of Detective Jim McLeod (Kirk Douglas), a self-righteous, uncompromising cop who appoints himself both judge and jury to law-breakers. "Evil's got a smell of its own. A child could spot it," he says. He's been persecuting an abortionist, Karl Schneider (George Macready), for a year, and Schneider has agreed to surrender himself to police custody. But his lawyer (Warner Anderson) wants assurances from Police Lieutenant Monahan (Horace McMahon) that his client will not be physically harmed. And the lawyer accuses McLeod of having personal, not professional, reasons for hounding Schneider. "Your moral indignation is beginning to give me a quick pain in the neck!," Monahan complains, hoping that McLeod will restrain himself.
The single set and the constant dialogue make "Detective Story" feel a bit too much like a play for my taste. But this is a formidable performance from Kirk Douglas. It's the most memorable role I've seen him in. The main conflict that will eventually place McLeod in a torturous position is the case of the abortionist. But other criminal cases that come into focus during breaks in the main storyline serve to illuminate McLeod's character. A nervous woman who has been arrested for shoplifting (Lee Grant) provides a periodic amusing distraction and respite from the film's intense emotions. The wonderful character actor William Bendix is Lou Brody, McLeod's partner of opposite temperament. Eleanor Parker is a warm, elegant presence as McLeod's wife Mary. McLeod's black-and-white world view has been the torment of many accused criminals, and now it becomes the confine from which McLeod himself cannot escape. "Detective Story" is a psychological drama and morality play that is neither original or surprising, but it is well-conceived and powerfully brought to life by a superb cast. There are no bonus features on the Paramount 2005 DVD. Subtitles are available in English, dubbing in French.

Lives up to its word.......2007-04-13
this movie is one that lives up to its a word and is extremely gorey, screwed up, and merciless. i dont remeber his name but the main character makes the story and movie so much more convicncing. the story is pretty good as for gore there not to much but theres a lot! the scnes are horrile theres rape, cannabalism, killing, murdering and other awful things your'll have to see for yourself
Hey! Thats not what chopsticks are used for !!.......2007-01-29
Remember those horror movies when the camera pulls away?
You know what I'm talikng about.
Right when the knife's about to fall;
and the camera decides now is the appopriate time to look over at the tile pattern on the bathroom wall.
Remember how cheated you felt?
Well this is the first movie I've personally seen that had me thankful for that squeamish camera.
Not every scene mind you,
Just the ones concerning chopstick rape, and child murder.
In those scenes you don't need to see the violence,
'cause you feel it in your stomach.
There was however an attempted suicide scene shown in full detail;
where our antagonist drags his wrists back & forth
across the jagged edge of a rusted basin.
And when that doesn't seem to cut it,
he decides to tear them open with his teeth.
The story concerns "The Eight Immortals" Chinese Restaurant and its current owner, (Who just so happens to have to killed the previous owner, and his entire family.)(kids too)
Investigating the case is the most slapstick group of cops this side of "Police Academy"
And when "they" start getting close he starts killing off his staff and grinding them into pork buns.
As good as it is;
the tension in this movie is undermined by its humor.
Every scene with the owner, makes your skin crawl,
however every scene with the detectives tickles your funny bone,
So what you ultimately wind up with is a disjointed feeling,
like you're watching two different movies at once.
It either should have been a comedy or a horror movie, not both.
If the director seriously wanted it to be both,
it should have been seamlessly blended as one.
When this movie tries to make you laugh,
it comes across as feeling kinda cheap
But when it aims to make you cringe,
boy will you be cringing.
Like I said,
there'll be scenes, when you're gonna be thankful the camera bailed out.
And when it doesn't.....
You're gonna wish it was showing you
the pretty tile patterns on the bathroom wall.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Don't Order the Pork Buns !!!
It's Untold for a Reason.......2007-01-20
This is one of those true stories that most people wish were not true. It's a ghastly tale of an employee at a Chinese restaurant who cheats, murders, and uses the bodies of his victims in his recipes. He was the Jeffrey Dahmer of the Far East. And this movie shows all the gory details, including some things that conventional Hollywood movies avoid. This is a big step beyond the routine horror/screamer cinema fare.
Mind Blowing Cat III Horror Story... One of the Best..........2007-01-19
'The Untold Story' is purportedly based on a true story. If that is indeed the case, this film is one of the more horrifying endeavors I have had the pleasure to witness in all my years. Even if it is not, this still quite a film...
Herman Yau directed this HK horror masterpiece masterfully. Anthony Wong (as Kai) gives one of the most convincing psycho performances I have ever encountered (at that's saying a lot)...
The story is a relatively simple one (albeit very effective). At the outset, Kai and his boss have some sort of monetary dispute involving gambling and cheating. An argument ensues, at which point Kai than proceeds to go sickhouse, and kill the man... Fast forward 8 years...
Kai is running a restaurant. Mysteriously, the previous owner and his family are nowhere to be found. As the police and various people begin to inquire about how Kai came into ownership of the restaurant, the questions begin to pile up (as do the missing bodies)...
Kai, being witty as well as psychotic devises a clever and creative way to dispose of the various bodies that he has created. By the way, don't eat the 'pork buns'...
Eventually the local police (who are portrayed as silly, Police Academy-esquire buffoons) become suspicious, leading to the arrest and eventual imprisonment of Kai. Torture and brutality ensue, culminating in a coerced confession presented beautifully and horrifically by Yau...
Much has been made of the violent and wicked nature of this film. Perhaps I am jaded, but I did not find this film to be gratuitously violent. All of the violent and wicked acts depicted were in context, and served the purpose of showing what a monster Kai is..
This may sound like a rather simple film. Plotwise it is. However, the story was well-constructed, and Yau's capable direction keep things moving forward engagingly so. This is a captivating and enthralling story, all the more incredible because it allegedly happened. If you love a good true crime/horror story (and are not of the squeamish variety), you will most likely find this to be a fascinating and well-done film...
Now This is What I Call a Horror Film!.......2006-09-24
Fasten your seat belts because you're in for a hell of a ride of no holds barred horror! The story of the film centers around the "Eight Immortals Restaurant", where a gambling addicted, fugitive, psychotic cook slaughters his employer and his family to death only to declared himself as the new owner. He would then murder anyone to avoid suspicion including murdering and chopping up his employees and turning them into "human roast pork buns" where he would then sell and feed it to his patrons including the police, who are investigating the whereabouts of the previous owner and his family. Warning....This film does not shy away from violence! Head bashings, human torching, eye gouging, stabbings, rape, chopsticks inserted into female genitelia, throat slashings, beheadings, chopped up bodies, etc. Of all the horror films I've seen and I've seened plenty...this film went a little to far. How far? The sequence of the restaurant's previous owner and his family including their six children being chopped up in gruesome detail, would've alone had any American director in the U.S. shot to death. Believe me...it's that revolting. Although the violence is way over the top...the film is supported by a good script, good production values and an excellent performance by Anthony Wong as "the Bunman". Two thumbs up!

I'm going to save myself the work of translating, and say,
I agree with Marcelo Figueredo and all others who sad
it definitely is worth the money and very informative,
Anyone who can recommend others like these, let me ;)
Very Informative.......2004-01-02
This video is by far my favorite regarding Ted Bundy. The images and information we receive here are forgotten or missing in other books and ideos regarding Bundy. If you are looking for an well done, informative documentary, then this is for you. Highly recommended
So this is the real Bundy!.......2003-03-18
I always wonder how Ted Bundy was really like, well I first only red about him and seeying this documentary on him finnally make me see what Ted Bundy behaviors, voice and look were like. He seem really normal, the way he speak was professional, he do have a cameleon look, sometime he look so different and you think this is Bundy? A very weird part in this documentary is when he asked Carol Boone to married him, he asked her in the middle of his court trial! If you want to know how Bundy really his buy or rent this tape but of course you won't know the real Bundy, he never really show his true self.
I couldn't believe it until I heard and saw it.......2002-09-17
I know a lot about Ted Bundy, having read and watched a lot of documentaries and movies about him but I had never seen the real Ted and didn't quite understand how people could trust him having seen the evil stare on some pictures. This man on the other hand when in control is the most charismatic person you can think of, with a beautiful voice, a soft look in his eyes, and a true reserve. Then the "entity" as some authors have called it shows up and the voice hardens and become deeper and deeper exactly as if he was possessed by some evil, and his eyes become darker with a terrifying gaze. You'll see him in court on this video , hear him talk about what "the person" probably did to the victims and see the transformation for yourself.
This documentary is definitely worth the money and very informative, still I can't help but imagine the terror of the girls who actually witness that transformation, but also it is terryfiyng to hear him talk without a trace of any remorse of any kind, and yet you can't help thinking just for a second of what life could have been for Ted if only he hadn't had that terrible part in him. Very interesting and very informative...but don't watch it at night.
An excellent film for teenagers..especially girls........1999-10-05
This film opens the eyes of people to serial killers. It teaches students to not be so trusting of other people. It is a must for all teenagers.

Amazon.com essential video
Brandon Teena was a handsome boy who had tremendous success with women because he always seemed to know exactly what they wanted. Perhaps it helped that Brandon Teena was born Teena Brandon, a young woman who desperately wanted to be a man. But Brandon lived in a small Midwestern town, where his sexual identity crisis wasn't tolerated, inciting two so-called friends to brutally murder him and two other innocents. This true story, which was the basis for the feature film Boys Don't Cry, is recounted in the award-winning (Best Documentary at both the Vancouver and Berlin film festivals) documentary The Brandon Teena Story.
This insightful film is both fascinating and horrifying, as we are treated to news footage and interviews with Brandon's family, friends, former girlfriends, as well as the two men who are in jail (one on death row) for the rape and later murder of Brandon. Throughout the film, the viewer's disgust grows as recordings of Brandon with the police department of Falls City, Nebraska, are played; when Brandon reports his rape, the questioning is turned around on him, making him the guilty party for his sexuality. Ignorance and hatred abound in the small town, although many of his ex-girlfriends are surprisingly sympathetic. While there is nothing graphic in this film, it is unexpectedly difficult to watch at moments; the drama, however, is gripping and the message an important one to hear. --Jenny Brown
Description
To his girlfriends, he was the perfect boyfriend. To his killers, he was a gender-bending freak. To the law, he got what he deserved. Ultimately, Brandon Teena is an American tragedy.
Winner of best documentary awards at the Berlin and Vancouver film
Customer Reviews:
Chilling, Real-Life Account of a Senseless Crime.......2006-01-23
I would highly recommend you watch "Boys Don't Cry" and read Aphrodite Jones' "All She Wanted" before viewing this DVD, because this DVD will have a much greater impact. I was totally blown away watching this film, because I was already familiar with the characters involved in Teena Brandon's life and murder. To see and hear them was quite chilling, especially the interviews from the two killers. It is also sad, because most of the main players interviewed are nothing but unwashed, ignorant, white trailer trash. The women were especially pathetic: most were high school dropouts, teenage mothers with two or more kids, on welfare or in low-paying dead-end jobs.
The documentary traces Teena Brandon's life, from birth to her horrendous death. The filmmakers did a superb job of setting the stage with visuals and music, giving viewers an idea of the type of place Falls City, Nebraska was: an all-white town composed of blue-collar and uneducated rednecks and hicks. Their idea of entertainment was demolition derbys and tractor pulls, or getting high and/or drunk. For a transgendered person like Teena, Falls City was the wrong place to settle down. To compound matters, Teena fell into the wrong crowd of people as well, a decision that would ultimately prove tragic.
In addition to interviewing the main players, the filmmakers interviewed the parents, relatives, prison inmates and former girlfriends, who provided valuable insights into Teena's life and her killers. You knew from the start that Teena's story was not going to end happily; her history of petty crimes followed her from Lincoln to Falls City, and set off a series of events that led to her demise. Transgendered activists were interviewed, as well as other law enforcement people who were horrified by the senseless killings by the two low-life punks.
I recommend this DVD to all, especially those interested in true crime, the Teena Brandon case or in transgender studies.
a complete account .......2005-10-21
boys don't cry is a beautiful and amazing film, don't get me wrong, but it isn't completely truthful, nor is it meant to be. this film gives a complete account of the brandon teena story in an honest, and considerate way while avoiding the trappings of over-sensationalizing like so many other documentations of this story have. more interested in informing than shocking, this film interviews important people in brandon's life thereby giving a complete account of his time in rural nebraska that led up to his eventual rape and death. i respect this film and appreciate the homage it pays to a young man who never meant to be an activist but has in death become one.
TIME TO UNDERSTAND .......2005-07-30
The firts time I came across Boys Don't Cry I had no idea who Brandon Tenna was, I never heard about this crime. This documentary is about Brandon Tenna, the men inside the woman, the people in this film are all people who knew Brandon, people who knew him as Brandon and people who knew her as Teena, I wish they had more to show about Brandon the story of the girl and the story of the boy inside her, I wish they had more pitures of Brandon as Brandon and as Teena. Her mother only said a few things, I wish the mother had stories to tell about Teena when she was a little girl and the sister, I wish she could've shared stories about Teena as her sister with the viewers. I thought this documentary had the complete story of the life and death of Teena Brandon, we all know who killed her, we all know who was involved but, what we don't know is what happpened to her why did it get so bad for her in Lincoln? I felt so sad after seeing what I saw, the few pictures of Brandon. If I was different which we all are, I would never move to a small town like Falls City, I wonder why Brandon never thought about coming here to Los Angeles or San Francisco even New York, people in big cities are more civilize and understading. We have so many different people here, even if some of us don't agree we some how accept each other. It is time to understand that we are all the same, whatever difference we have is not to us to judge, live and let live, allow God to make the final judgement, which by the way is the only one who counts. Accept yourself and others will follow. John Lotter & Tom Nissen soon will learn that all the things we do here on earth will be presented to us when we go to that final place, till then I guess John & Tom will just have live with that in mind, I hope they can some day accept what they did and live with it for the rest of their miserable lifes.
R.I.P. TEENA BRANDON (BRANDON TENNA) LISA & PHILLIP.
Lies, love and murder.......2005-07-29
I have heard many sad stories, it breaks my heart to hear them. It never changes for me, I get very depress to hear other peoples sad stories. I first saw the movie Boys Don't Cry, I loved it but, never gave it much thought, I din't know who Brandon Tenna (Teena Brandon) was. I was just curious to see how the real Brandon looked like, so I went on line and there s/he was, just what I thought! s/he was just as handsome as I thought. After seeing The Brandon Tenna Story I felt very close to Brandon, I don't really anderstand gays and lesbians, I don't even try, they live their lives and I live mine, but Brandon was different, Brandon was just what every women wants, maybe if he had been honest with people things would had been different, I have learned that when you accept yourself others follow. I see all human form to be equal, black, gay's, lesbian's etc... we are the same. It is not up to us to judge anyone, therefore it is not up to us to decide who lives and who dies. Why is it so hard for people to love one-other?? Then I think, was there something else that happened between Brandon, Lana, John and Tom? Or was it just pure evil? John & Tom, what made them decide to kill Brandon? Was it really that bad? A lie is a lie, Brandon's little secret was not a reason to hate him nor kill him, I would have been mad but eventually I would had forgiven Brandon. I hope John & Tom live with this in mind; what goes around comes around. The Brandon Tenna Story is a must see. For anyone who wants to know more about the life and death of Brandon Tenna. For all of those who see this documentary, please ask yourselves, have I judge anyone? Have I ever hated someone so much just because they were different? and think about someone else who may also be thinking the same about you, and if this makes you unhappy then you now know better not to judge or hate others.
Sad..........2005-05-07
You know what's really SAD, is that they're deaths could've been prevented if it wasn't for that dumb cop! He sounded like he was excited about questioning her ughhh...sick!

After making a name for herself as a model, Angie Harmon hit the big leagues with a recurring role on Law and Order. Lifetime's Video Voyeur was her first opportunity to prove she could carry a production by herself. Harmon stars as real-life homemaker-turned-crusader Susan Wilson, who moved into the suburban Louisiana house of her dreams in the 1990s. Her neighbors are community leaders, the Glovers. Steve Glover (Jamey Sheridan), the church deacon, has nursed a crush on her since high school. (Although Sheridan is a couple of decades older than Harmon, both give convincing performances.) Wilson's dream turns into a nightmare when she finds that Glover has been secretly taping her. She decides to press charges but discovers that his actions aren't illegal. With the support of her family and friends, she decides to do something about it in this inspiring story from director Tim Hunter (River's Edge). --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Imagine having your most private, intimate moments caught on tape against your will. That's exactly what happened to Susan Wilson (Angie Harmon) and her family. After moving into their dream house in a quiet Louisiana town, the Wilsons are horrified to discover that their trusted neighbor Steve Glover (Jamey Sheriden) has installed video cameras into their home without their knowledge. And they are just as disturbed to learn that the laws against this kind of virtual stalking are inadequate. The shy, demure Susan Wilson makes a decision that alters her life: Fight back and protect individuals' basic rights to privacy. "Video Voyeur: The Susan Wilson Story" is a gripping, real-life drama. BASED ON A TRUE STORY.

A family changed by a video voyeur.......2005-01-15
WOW! This movie rocks. This is a movie about Susan Wilson and her family and the effects of their life being taped with out your permission. Susan was not going to sit there and do nothing, she stood up and made people who are doing these crimes accountable for them. This is a true story about a women who changed the law about video Voyeurs. And for those who may not know what Video Voyeur is it is the tapeing of your life, personal moments, sexual moments, and things to that effect with out your permission. Video Voyeurs can happen any where. Susan was safe in her own home, or so she thought! This was a GREAT lifetime original movie........
Meant for All TV Movie Fans!.......2004-07-08
"Video Voyeur" is an emotional thrill ride into the life of Susan Wilson, a woman whose perfect life is brought to a halt when she finds tiny spy cams everywhere in her house. Although this is not one of my top film faves, I recommend it for anyone who loves TV movies (especially those awesome Lifetime dramas!). You will truly feel Susan's struggle to cope with the embarrassment, anger, and frustration of this ordeal because this type of violation can happen to any of us. Plus, Angie Harmon is excellent in her role!
Excellent TV Movie.......2004-05-26
This is an excellent made for TV movie. Starring Angie Harmon, Jamey Sheridan (both in the Law & Order franchise) and Dale Midkiff, this is about a family who move to Louisiana and their friendly neighbour, who happens to be a Deacon in the church, plants cameras in the house and spies on them.
What's make this hit home is that this is true and could happen to anyone. It makes you think about all the daft things you do when alone (like singing in the shower!) when you think no-one's looking.
There are great performances all round, from the whole cast. I've only seen Angie Harmon on Law & Order and was pleasantly surprised by how good an actress she is. Dale Midkiff is also very good in this, as he gets older he gets better and so do the parts he's getting, and Jamey Sheridan is excellent as the creepy neighbour. TV movies are usually run of the mill but this is very good. Much better than the garbage that's made here in the UK.
However, the only thing is that this was made in Canada, not Louisiana and it shows, it looks really cold, not the South at all!
THIS IS A TRUE STORY!.......2002-11-23
Angie Harmon stars in this true story where a Louisiana town's church deacon secretly plants video cameras inside a woman's home, giving him the ability to watch her every move...in the bedroom, in the shower, everywhere. When the woman finds out what is happening, and reports it..she finds out that what he did is not illegal. This is a true story! Angie Harmon and the lady who this movie is really about were recently on the talk show circuit saying how they are actually traveling from state to state in order to pass laws in each state making sure that this kind of behavior is deemed illegal. A great, enjoyable, empowering movie..I've watched it a few times already.

It would be an exaggeration to say that Nick Broomfield solved the murders of Biggie and Tupac. Nonetheless, he makes a convincing case as to who the perpetrators were and why they weren't brought to justice. Broomfield (Kurt and Courtney), who narrates and appears on camera, comes across like a scruffy Robin Leach, but he's done his homework and sniffs out the clues with the tenacity of a bloodhound. Time and again, he refuses to be intimidated--even when his life appears to be at stake. Fortunately, he was able to convince Voletta Wallace, beloved mother of Biggie Smalls (a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G.), to cooperate, and that opened many doors. Unfortunately, Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, refused to participate or to allow access to his music. She had nothing to fear. Broomfield is fair to both rappers, although the soundtrack is all-Biggie. Easily one of the most fascinating documentaries of 2002. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
