Kurt Russell reprises his role as Snake Plissken, of the near-future thriller Escape from New York, in this reworking of that film's basic premise. Instead of New York being a maximum-security prison, this time it's L.A., which through the agency of earthquakes has become an island of the damned. This penal colony is where the film's future rulers, something very like the Moral Majority, send those deemed guilty of "moral crimes." But something has gone wrong in this new moral order, because the President's daughter has absconded to L.A. with a detonation device, and Snake is commandeered to retrieve it. The film's dark dystopia, with its satrical elements taking aim at our dwindling freedoms, and the eclipsing of democracy by narrow interests, are more the subject this time. As a result the action suffers, and the plot devices are sometimes weak and predictable. But just below the surface there is a coiled Snake ready to strike. Steve Buscemi's performance as a weasely hawker of L.A. tour maps is a standout, and the presence of Peter Fonda and Pam Grier adds to the fun. In fact, just the sight of Fonda surfing down the flooded corridor of Sunset Boulevard is reason enough to check this movie out. --Jim Gay

A REGRETTABLE FILM,WE NEED TO FORGET IT !AND PRETEND THIS ONE WAS A BAD DREAM.

Remake, not a sequel........2007-05-18

Although it was very entertaining seeing Russell reprise his Plissken character, the movie itself was a letdown. Same scenario: Snake captured, injected w/ life-threatening drug, forced to perform for the president, infiltrating former US metropolis that now houses the country's undesirables, escapes just in time, mission accomplished, gets last word, the end. The only thing that was different from its predecessor was the addition of cheesy special effects and campy scenes (Snake on a surfboard, anyone ? Gimme a break!) If this was meant to be some kind of parody of the first film (which is, obviously, farrrrr superior), then Carpenter and Russell succeeded. What were they thinking ??

The Snake Man Cometh............2007-01-08

Okay, the rating above is not going to be liked but I have to be truthful.

The only good thing going for this movie was the return of "Snake Plissken".

This film's plot was essentially a rehash of the original "Escape From New York"...A bit more special effects (which in fact, did not make this a better movie)...

When I go to a sequel I expect to get what I paid for a totally new adventure with the same character / characters.

Kurt Russell's character is older and even more in the know of what the rewards are before he is offered them.

Obviously the movie doesn't really know where it's going as it takes two scenes (15 minutes of the film) (1st scene - President, Commandant, and Lackey give Snake the mission) (2nd scene - Commandant and Lackey brief Snake before he leaves for the mission) to explan to the audience what's the basic conflict.

I guess either Carpenter or Russell are just getting too old to take a GREAT leap and recount either an earlier Snake Plissken adventure or an adventure well worth telling..

I also wish to comment that this disc has no special features besides a movie trailer...
"Carpenter....Russell! " Please don't tell me "money" caused you to revisit a "cult figure"!

Some redeeming qualities are the acting performances of Cliff Robertson, Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, and Pam Grier. Robertson, Keach, and Grier may be old but they can sure make you believe in their characters!

Peter Fonda and Kurt Russell surfing a wave down a Los Angeles reservoir is not cool, does not make this movie worth a look, good God, that scene stinks. P-U. Campy. This movie is a mess. A horribly made sequel. So bad it actually tarnishes the reputation of the original.

Sufficient movie to waist a couple hours downtime here in Afghanistan. That's it though!

if you like sci fi, and enjoy a large scale presentation (on a big home system), this movie is haunting, sad and powerful. i do not understand the poor reviews by some unless they do not like sentimental and unhappy endings...

Ridiculous film doesn't even make sense.......2007-04-08

This insipid remake takes far too many liberties with the story, butchers its source material, and unsurprisingly ends up being quite a mess. Furthermore, the movie doesn't even really make sense when you think about it. The protagonist this time wants to travel to the past to save his love, and finds he can't alter what happened. He then goes to the future where he CAN alter events. The remake entirely forgets the point that the Eloi are supposed to be human cattle. That they're not kind of entirely destroys the whole point of the book, and the film greatly suffers as a result. The character played by Jeremy Irons was a dumb addition to the story. Ironically, the special effects used to depict the Morlocks were better in the 60s film!

Great Movie.......2007-03-15

I have read Well's book and seen the older movie. That said, I love this movie. Guy Pearce is very convincing in his role.

We see a man in love. When he looses that love, he uses his genius to try and save her. Failing to do that, he embarks on a quest to find out why. When he gets his answer, he realizes he has found a new life, and to leave the past in the past.

I thought the ending, with the past next to the future, was well done.

And Orlando Jones role is entertaining.

Some Good Changes, Some Not.......2007-03-13

H.G. Wells's classic tale of adventure and social commentary gets a new face in this latest film version. A scientist obsessed with his work and always late manages to build a machine capable of moving through time. His first attempts to improve things do not go as planned. He seems able to change details of the past but not the main results so he turns toward the future. He sees the progress of humanity as it builds and moves forward. A catastrophic event involving the moon changes the world drastically. Finally, 800,000 years into the future he stops. There he meets a peaceful and idyllic people. They are both primitive and advanced at the same time. This seems like a beautiful new world. But then the Morlocks rear their heads and the truth of the world is revealed.

Morlocks live underground and come up from time to time to prey on the innocents above. While they do not like things this way they have no way to fight back. The time traveler feels he needs to help these people and rescue those who have been taken. Eventually he is successful to a point and works to make a new life for himself among these people of the future.

This film often seems less like a new adaptation of the novel and more like an adaptation of George Pal's film. There are three main differences. The nuclear catastrophe has been replaced by the Lunar mishap (no Cold War anymore). The Eloi are less child-like. The Morlocks are more like Verne's Selenites from FIRST MEN IN THE MOON. Replacing the original Cold War fears was a good idea but its replacement was silly. I approve of the new Eloi and Morlocks although they are further from Wells's original. In the end the film has some parts that are better and some that are worse. Having now seen the film I am not surprised at its poor performance. It lacks the action and intensity that successful films of this genre usually have. But it is not a bad film, just one that won't particularly appeal to the main body of movie goers.

As always, I am very pleased with this product. I started purchasing my DVDs through Amazon last year and this purchase, like so many others, was very satisfactory. The DVD is in mint condition, as promised, and the price couldn't be beat!

Like model robots or sci-fi action in general? You might like this..........2006-01-24

Loosely-based on the manga books by Kia Asamiya, the basic premise of this film is that a gang of scavengers lands on what they think is a deserted island that was used to build war machines by automation, with the hope to find a treasure trove in abandoned military hardware that they can resell on the black market.

Unfortunately they don't know that the island is not only still alive with activity, but it is well-guarded by the previous inhabitants, and the survivors end up having to enlist the services of a Gun UNit/Heavy Elimination Device (GUNHED) battle robot in order to fight back against the forces left on the island.

This reminds me a lot of the Toho movies like Godzilla or such. Except instead of giant mutated monsters you have giant autonomous weapons. One thing that was really fun about watching this movie was the amount of effort that was put into the set design. You really get the feeling that the characters have stepped into a large factory that has danger at every turn. The Gunhed robot itself has a real sense of scale, and there are some funny dialogue interchanges between the pilot and the GUNHED AI computer.

There are a couple of scenes which could have been done better, and some of the script is muddled at best. Many of the characters aren't given much development time either, so you wonder if they were needed at all or if somehow they had larger roles but due to budget constraints, they couldn't be given more screen time (as such, they are given quick exits, conveniently provided for by the environment).

In short, if you like Japanese robot design, model robot building, or sci-fi action in general, you might like this film. There is only one volume of this DVD by the way, and this is the complete movie itself.

Rough All Around!.......2004-11-24

This is one of the more disjointed Live Action Japanese SciFi movies you'll ever see... and for those of you familiar with their efforts in this genre, you know that's sayin' something.Stiff and doesn't move well at all - and that's just the ACTING... forget the "giant robots", which look like trumped up back hoes or other John Deer construction equipment... I love Japanese SciFi and I'll sit through just about anything, but this one had me looking at my watch more than a few times to see if I was coming to the end or not. How they could break it into two parts and expect to sell any copies of pt. II, I will never understand... let this translated manga alone, it's not worth your time or your money.

GUNHED returns.......2004-11-14

I didnt know there was more than one of these. But the DVD is called Volume 1 here. Its a so-so giant robot film from Toho that was released in 1988.
The so called "robots" really just move like stiff tanks on stubby legs, so dond expect anything like a Mechagodzilla in this film. The story is set in that same
dark and dirty technological noir future seen in films like Blade Runner and Aliens.
I guess this was cutting edge at the time, but this film didnt make it stateside until the mid '90s. American films from this period such as Robocop and Robot Jox are far more satisfying, as this movie is snail paced and somewhat hard to follow, possibly because of the dubbing. Not a horrible movie but its not in league with Toho's best. Buy Returner instead.
