The third and darkest season of Full Metal Panic! comes to an appropriately dramatic (and zany) conclusion as Sousuke tackles his personal demons. Alone in a largely deserted Hong Kong, he confronts the sadistic terrorist Gauron and his own weird upbringing. After Kaname knocks some sense into his head--figuratively and literally--Sousuke acts like a proper hero: he arrives in the nick of time, in a mecha that crushes everything in its path. As the voice of Sousuke, Chris Patton convincingly moves from despair to righteous anger to hilarious confusion; as Kaname, Luci Christian matches him mood swing for mood swing. Sadly, this disc concludes the Full Metal Panic series, but another sequel remains possible. The extras include a 30-minute OVA in which Theresa Testarossa tries to reconstruct what happened the previous night, when Melissa Mao tricked her into drinking alcohol. Among the problems: what's become of her favorite stuffed animal--which turns out to be Bonta-kun from Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. (Rated TV 14: violence, brief nudity, risqué humor, profanity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

this is a must have for any full metal panic fans. the down side is that it's only 3 episodes and it's diffently hard to understand nearly anything if you've never seen full metal panic before.... however to counter that would be to simply state that this is the 2nd seasion! get back to the first seasion and be wowed there!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful anime series.......2007-05-12

What can I say this anime is one fun ride. Full Metal Panic is one show that has everything you want: action, drama, love, comedy all wrapped into one anime. I am not sure how they do it but they do it so well.
I love the two main characters Kanami and Sousuke. They are strong characters that you can't help but love them in action.

Story is well done. Beautiful animation. Some funny stories. Some action pack stories.

I hope there is a fourth season for this show.

5 out of 5 stars W00T!!.......2007-05-06

Still the best high school comedy/mech anime out there. This last volume of The Second Raid is definitely a fitting way to end this arc, but it also leaves the door open for more FMP. If you haven't seen the first Full Metal Panic things might be a little confusing, and I would definitely recommend watching it on Youtube or something, but they do a pretty good job with flashbacks and getting you up to speed on the older characters. If you have seen the whole series than you'll definitely enjoy volume 4 of TSR. So to all the die hard FMP fans: definitely pick up volume 4, and keep your fingers crossed that another series is released soon because a world without FMP is certainly no world at all.

I don't often write reviews or opinions, outside of myspace of course, but i just finished Tactical Ops 4 and i am left disappointed...THAT IT'S OVER!! This is my opinion, I have grown to love this series more than any other in my meager collection and i fell a great sense of lose at the fact that this is over. All of the characters is this entirely too short series are so well thought out that i believe that anyone would be hard pressed to find another anime with more character depth (again my biased opinion). Well....if i don't stop myself there i will spend too much time writing something that you will probably skim, so i will leave it at this: BUT THIS SERIES!!

5 out of 5 stars FULL METAL PANIC! THE SECOND RAID TOP'S THE REST !!!.......2007-03-25

Having watched the entire FMP series, and I mean all of it (FMP, FMP fumaffou - sorry for the misspelling - and FMP the second raid), I shall present to the reader the following review scheme:

- A complete story outline of FMP the second raid, something that I also did in the last three volumes, but SPOILERS WILL BE INCLUDED!!! (Therefore, if you are not familiar with the series, skip this section or otherwise, everything will be given away to you. If you have not watched the final volume of the series than avoid the last part of the story outline or otherwise you will know how the show ends).
- Extras of the DVDs
- An overall opinion of all three FMP series so that for someone who just comes across these series to grasp a complete picture of it (as much as this is possible of course); and finally,
- Buying it or not? And if yes, how to buy it!

STORY OUTLINE (SPOILERS INCLUDED):
First of all, the story starts where the first season ended (with a few `modifications' made). The anime begins with Mithril being involved in military attacks in the Baltic region while its leader has acquired advanced weaponry technology anti-ECS missile (missile able to detect systems with ECS invisibility). In order to protect hellicopters filled with refuges Sousuke must use the the Arbalest's Lambda Driver, which he still tries to learn how to control. Later on, the viewer will be introduced to the main villain of the series, Gates, who is a member of an organization called Amalgam and basically opposes Mithril and was the one which provided the leader of the Baltic nation with the advanced weaponry. We are also introduced to Xia Yu Fan and Xia Yu Lan, twin sisters who we later learn were raised by Gauron.
After a school side-story, the next mission takes us to Nanjiing, so that Mithri can safe hostages. There, Mao wil hide between the hostages by pretending she is one of them, will have to fight against Xia Yu Lan; Kurz Weber (who is piloting the only Zy-98 Shadow-type Arm Slave in the battle) will have to fight against Xia Yu Fan and Sousuke (who asked to take a M9 instead of Arbalest was denied because he is the only one who can operate the Arbalest and the Lambda Driver) will be left alone with the unreliable Lambda driver to deal with Gates, who is operating a Venom-type Arm Slave. During this battles we will also witness some betray going on (sorry guys, if I say more I will take the suspense away).

Yet, we should also not forget that a love-story between the two main protagonists is going on which will become apparent during Sousuke's constant absences from school and that Kaname becomes worried about him in many aspects; while Mao will start to worry about him as well. Sousuke, starts to reflect upon his own feelings about Kaname and would prefer to remain a student by her side instead of being a soldier etc. Furthermore, and going through various `misinterpretations' that Sousuke Sagara usually does, Kaname and him get closer and he realizes how much Kaname is depending on him. The specific episode ends when Sousuke (who is beginning to realize his feelings for Kaname) is ordered to withdraw from guarding Kaname immediately, with all guard duties being entrusted to another agent, codenamed "Wraith."
After being called back, Sousuke falls into a slight depression, not wanting to pilot the Arbalest and wishing he were back at Jindai High. We are introduced to the new Uruz-1, Lieutenant Belfangan Groseaux. He tests Sousuke's ability with the Arbalest, a test Sousuke fails miserably. Meanwhile Kaname is becoming increasingly suspicious that someone is following her. She discovers that Sousuke has left for good and realizes she is now completely alone. She decides to find out who is following her, and through a series of events discovers Wraith, who informs her that aside from himself, someone else seems to be following her. We discover this person is Xia Yu Lan, the younger twin. She shoots Wraith and then attacks Kaname. Kaname escapes, but is pursued and manages to surprise Yu Lan and shoot her with a Taser. After this she is met by Leonard Testarossa, Tessa's brother and a fellow Whispered. He is an agent of Amalgam and has orders to kill Yu Lan. He orders one of his bodyguards (a miniature AS unit) to kill her. When this is done he expresses that he seems to have fallen in love with Kaname and steals her first kiss, which infuriates her. In exchange for her forgiveness, Leonard allows her to take back Wraith who seems to still be alive.
To make the long story short the viewer will follow the Mithril team to another mission, this time in Hong Kong, in which power games and betrays will go on and someone is piloting an AS unit eqiuped with a Lamda Driver as well. In terms of `performance' Sousuke will hit rock bottom and fails completely because he cannot concentrate due to reoccurring thoughts of Kaname. These distraction eventually cause him to crash the vehicle he is driving. Mao tells him she won't work with him unless he can focus. Sousuke realizes he can't and abandons the mission. Meanwhile tensions between North and South China force Mithril to order an assault on the enemy AS before it is found. While they battle the AS, Sousuke wanders through Hong Kong, eventually meeting a Chinese Woman who resembles Chidori. He goes with her to her apartment, most likely to have sex, but due to her appearance thoughts of Chidori constantly fill his mind; (don't worry, He decides to leave) ending up wandering in the streets and meets an old enemy who amongst other things tells him that Kaname died. Sousuke kills him, this time for good. Meanwhile, Mithril is in great need of Sousuke and Tessa orders that Sousuke is been send the Arbalest so that he can rejoin the team and defeat the enemy; but, his will to fight is gone. Without Kaname he is lost.
As Sousuke tries to leave he is confronted with Kaname, who used Wraith to find Sousuke. After beating him up she tells him he needs to pilot the Arbalest and save everyone. Feeling renewed confidence at seeing Kaname alive Souske finally realizes that he is the only one who can pilot the Arbalest and works together with the Al to fully make use of the Lambda Driver.
The final episode, is basically the climax of the show and when the main villain is about to kill everyone Sousuke arrives just in time, makes full use of the Lamda Drive and saves everyone.
The Second Raid ends with Sousuke finally understanding what he wants to do with his life: Pilot the Arbalest for Mithril and attend school with Kaname. He works out a deal with Mithril that allows him to do just that. We are left with both Kaname and Sousuke having realized their feelings for each other, but neither of them being able to admit it.

Extras of the DVDs: Well, because I bought these DVDs separately and a box-set is not out yet, I can speak of what comes along with the separate DVDs that a potential buyer will get. All four DVDs come along with a small booklet that gives you additional information of various characters that appear in the show, of various missions, of Mecha types or circumstances, like, why China is divided in two regions. Besides it, another booklet is included in the DVDs that basically advertise other anime shows that are out there and that you can buy. As far as the DVDs extras concerns, well, other anime previews, some character drawings (I think that is how it is called), some interviews with the creators of the shows, non-credit opening and ending etc. and the first three have previous of the next episode to come; basically, nothing special.
The dub and sub are perfectly down (therefore, if you prefer the English version you are lucky) as is the animation. As for the opening and ending songs they are similar - I am referring to the music - to the ones that you already know from the first and second FMP.

OVERALL OPINION:
OK, for simplicity reasons I will call the series FMP 1, FMP 2 and FMP 3 (which stands for FMP the second raid) accordingly.
FMP 1 starts off with a pattern very well known to the anime viewers, especially when it comes down to Mechas (giant robots etc.), which is: good vs. bad guy, love triangles (FMP 3 has actually a love quadangle, man my English is bad, well you get the picture), high school students with special powers and sometimes serious issues, action, people die etc. So, what makes FMP different at all? Well, in my humble opinion I cannot provide you with a clear cut explanation but for some reason the chemistry in these series works perfectly and differentiates FMP from the rest of its genre. It does indeed have something for everyone, from comedy - or should I say, slapstick comedy - to drama, twists in the scenarios (especially FMP 1 and FMP 3), fan service and a lot of slapstick comedy (especially FMP 2) and so forth.
In other words: FMP 1 keeps a balance between hardcore action, romance and comedy and on character development. FMP 2 concentrates more on the everyday life of the high school students, to the development of the feelings that the love triangle share with each other and on slapstick comedy. FMP 3 on the other hand, gets straight to the point (only 13 episodes long). In all three shows the action and how the mechas spread out or fight is professionally done as in real circumstances. I do not know if the creators had planned to develop like this FMP from day one but if you start watching FMP 3, there, it is assumed that you are familiar with the main characters and of what is basically going on (let us say, the Lamda drive of the Arbalest).
Now, because I have posted this review in FMP the second raid, volume 4, a few words about these specific four volumes. FMP the second raid is a very good series and I do highly recommend it to everyone. Here, everything will be tested: How strong is Kaname's and Sousuke's (but spoken like Soske) love? How will Mithril fight against corruption amongst its own ranks and Amalgam? How will the team make it? Can Kaname fight back without Sousuke by her side and can she save him? What will Sousuke decide to do and can he safe them? Well, in the end, all of these questions and more will be answered. FMP 3 is packed with action, romance and emotions all over the way. Furthermore, because of the circumstances that the main protagonists are encountering and probably because of its `short length' it remains almost serious through the entire series and there are no filler episodes at all; meaning, that every episode advances the show straight to the final confrontation.

Buying it or not? And if yes, how to buy it:
My personal recommendation would be to buy it. However, buying all three FMP may be a little bit expensive for everyone; especially for anime fans like me who sometimes cannot wait and buy the DVDs as soon as they come out. Lucky you, specifically the ones who just stumbled upon these shows, FMP 1 and FMP 2 are already available in Box Sets and compared in buying them separately, will be cheaper. Therefore, buy the Box Sets of FMP 1 and FMP 2 and not the DVDs separately. As for FMP the second raid, if you haven't bought any volume yet, then wait a couple months and it should come out in a Box Set as well (something that usually happens with all shows). If on the other hand you have already started to buy the DVDs separately probably means that you are familiar with the series, love them and will continue till the end.
Bottom line is: That I do highly recommend the entire FMP series and it probably is a `must have' in your anime collection.

I hope that I could help you...

Nearly three years after it was filmed, The Great Raid finally appeared as a welcome reminder that good old-fashioned World War II movies never go out of style. While lacking the scale, prestige, and pulse-pounding momentum of Saving Private Ryan, this fact-based war drama benefits from a back-to-basics approach to realism and a rousing rescue climax that more than compensates for the slower passages that precede it. Adapted from the books The Great Raid on Cabanatuan and Ghost Soldiers, it chronicles the five-day mission (in late January 1945) to rescue 511 American prisoners of war held by the Japanese at Cabanatuan POW camp in the Philippines. Under the direction of neo-noir specialist John Dahl (The Last Seduction), the film's three-part structure follows the raid mission led by Lt. Col. Mucci (Benjamin Bratt); the plight of the POWs at Cabanatuan, including malaria-stricken Maj. Gibson (Joseph Fiennes); and civilian resistance in Manila as carried out by real-life hero and Gibson's (fictional) would-be lover Margaret Utinsky (Connie Nielsen), whose effort to aid the POWs is vigilantly monitored by the enemy Japanese. In keeping with war-movie traditions, Dahl handles character and action with no-nonsense intelligence, favoring a slow build over pumped-up adrenalin. By the time the miraculous rescue is executed with critical assistance by Filpino guerillas, The Great Raid has earned its stripes, honoring the brave men who carried out the most successful rescue mission in U.S. military history. --Jeff Shannon

Description

In the epic tradition of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, THE GREAT RAID is an inspirational true story of the most triumphant rescue mission in U.S. military history! As World War II rages, the elite 6th Ranger Battalion is given a mission of heroic proportions: push 30 miles behind enemy lines and liberate over 500 American prisoners of war. Under the command of Lt. Col. Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt -- TRAFFIC), the men of the 6th will face the unthinkable by attempting the impossible! Also featuring James Franco (SPIDER-MAN 1 & 2), Connie Nielsen (GLADIATOR), and Joseph Fiennes (SHAKESPEAKE IN LOVE), this gripping big-screen hit captures a moment in time when men of honor became soldiers of destiny!

5 out of 5 stars Great Raid, Great Movie!!!.......2007-06-12

This is definitely one of the best war movies I have ever seen!!! Like Grave of The Fireflies, it shows how cruel war itself can be...Yes, there are times when the movie sounds off like a History Channel program, but it's still a great war movie!!! Being that I'm Filipino, this movie also gave me a glimpse of what it must have been like during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines...it also made me realize how my grandparents truly felt during that time...Long story short; great raid, great movie!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very good but read Ghost Soldiers.......2007-05-02

Very good movie but defintely read the book Ghost Soldiers also. Well worth watching especially due to the fact of how remarkable the story is.
Movie strengths:
1)Very well cast
2)Sticks pretty well to the story line
3)Very well acted
4)Great filming - especially of the country side and the actual raid.

Weaknesses:
1)A little jumbled as to when the events actually took place per the books.
2) The best subplot of the Real story involved the movie heroine which in reality disguised herself, opened a bar that catered to Japanese soldiers and stole secrets from them for the underground. In the movie Dahl made her a nurse and dumbed her story down. TOTALLY incorrect and BORING. And then of course introduced a fake love story.
3) The last scene is a travesty - instead of showing what really happened they Hollywoodized it and made it revolve around the phony love affair. What makes it worse is that they ACTUALLY filmed the correct ending and deleted it - see deleted scenes where Dahl claims that this version was not correct - hey buddy - read the books and get your facts straight - This is history that you are supposed to PORTRAY not betray. Wimp.

Overall a very good movie - too bad they couldn't have stuck completely with the truth as it made a better story. Fact was much better than fiction in this story but unfortunately Hollywood got to it in their usual way.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Review.......2007-04-03

Loved this movie so much I had to purchase it. Great shipping, perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking movie with a great history lesson.......2007-03-25

The first thing I want to say is that this movie does not glorfy war. I was also glad that this movie was not a 'Saving Private Ryan/Thin Red Line' type of production. It was a drama, a movie in the 1960s or 70s type or style. It had more of a look and feel of a 'Patton,' "Tora, Tora, Tora" or "Longest Day" to it, not like the 'Battle of the Buldge' though.

The story itself was gripping enough, only five days to extract over 500 prisoners who were destined to die at the hands of their captors who wished to kill them because they viewed them as animals.

I think the movie also gave a lot of lessons around one of the most ignored areas of World War II. The Phillipines has mostly been ignored in movies about that epic in history. This movie covers that part of the war in an overview fashion, even with a bit of a documentary at the beginning.

The DVD has some great historical extras like the interactive timeline of the whole war and interviews of some of those who were involved in the great raid. The Captain Dale Dye piece was also informative on how the movie was made and the training that the actors had to go through in a bootcamp setting for over two weeks.

I really liked the story of sacrifice for men who were left to basically rot for a myriad of reasons by the US. Really, there was no Navy to save them or to get to them since the first attacks of the Phillipines were just days after Pearl Harbor. The fact that there were so many fighting men that languished in Corregador and main island of the Phillipines was almost appalling. Most of the men died on the way to the prison camps in what is known as the Bataan Death March. This alone, the history, is worth the whole time watching the movie. Since there is no gore, kids could watch it without too much difficulty.

I think the thing that got to me the most was seeing the footage of the real heroes and survivors of the raid and of the captives. It was very touching to see video of what happened to them after they were freed. To say the least, this was a very well done movie and since it was done in more of an old fashion way, the lessons learned and the desire and drive of all of the men and women involved makes for a huge lesson in sacrifice for your fellow man.

The movie has three main locations it focuses on: The capital of Manila, where the underground was fighting its fight, the prison camp where the prisoners were trying to stay alive fighting disease and deprivation, and with the soldiers who were their saviors from the beach head to the eventual attack and extraction at the camp.

There is a lot of history covered in this great film. Worth it for the whole family to watch since there are heroes and heroines.

This definately rates among the top of the movies in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awe-Inspiring. Patriotic. Historical. Powerful........2007-03-12

In a world that is jaded, cynical and satirical, we need a dose of goodness, of courage, of honor. There is no greater sacrifice than that a man lay down his life for his friends. And no greater sacrifice than a man give his life for his country.

In that context, this is a love story - par excellence. This movie is a reminder of the role of heroism. The price of freedom, the love of our countrymen.

The greatest raid took place near the end of WWII against the methodically-cruel Japanese. They deprived POWS of food and medicine and killed and tortured them without mercy. The untried and untested US Rangers were given an assignment to rescue 511 American soldiers held prisoner-of-war.

Very few films make me weep - this is one. Powerful without measure.
God Bless the US Rangers!

Nerds without computers may seem a contradiction in terms, but life was simpler back in 1984 and the geeks seemed to get along fine with just a slide rule and a plastic pocket protector. A variation on the fraternity-farce plot of Animal House, the picture celebrates the triumphs of a gang of geeks, led by Robert Carradine and a pre-E.R. Anthony Edwards, as they get back at a rival frat house full of jocks and preppies. Although the brains-over-brawn theme ought to be sure-fire, the movie gets by mostly on charm; there are very few explosively funny sequences. The supporting cast includes some surprising familiar faces, notably James Cromwell (Babe, L.A. Confidential) as Carradine's look-alike dad, pants hoisted proudly to his armpits. The director, Jeff Kanew (Gotcha!), went on to the 1991 private-eye belly flop V.I. Warshawski and has not been heard from since. --David Chute

3 out of 5 stars DVD review .......2007-05-07

Overall, the panty raid edition dvd is pretty good. There are still a few gripes that I have with this dvd. First off, the cover art is horrible! I would be ashamed to walk in my local Walmart and buy this product just for the cover art alone. I guess that's why I ordered it online to save the embarrassment. Why don't they keep the original art work on these dvd's? Upgraded features, downgraded cover art. Secondly, this is my biggest gripe. Has anyone noticed how the past couple of releases of this movie have cut the scene of the nerds walking up the street to the house that Lewis discovered with the "for rent" sign in his hand right before they fix it up? I have seen this scene cut when it has been aired on HBO as well. Also, why in the world they put the t.v. pilot on this dvd, i'll never know. It was awful! I wanted my 30 minutes back. There were a few faces I recognized in it, like Sean Kanan from the Karate Kid 3. Lastly, the deleted scenes were terrible too. I can see why they cut them out. They also did not include all of the deleted scenes though, because if you watch the trailer, you will notice some other scenes that weren't in the movie or the deleted scenes section. The great things about this dvd are the documentary which was great and the commentary.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Comedy Classic.......2007-04-13

Once in a while, a film comes along which will be remembered for a long time after its original release. "Revenge of the Nerds" is one such film, and this great DVD edition has finally done this great comedy justice.

Starring Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards, Timothy Busfield, and a host of other fine actors, the viewer gets a first-hand look at college fraternity life.

Carradine stars as Lewis. Along with his friend Gilbert (Edwards), the two head off to the mythical Adams College to begin their careers in computer science. Upon arriving at campus, Lewis and Gilbert are ridiculed by the Alpha Betas, who are led by Stan Gable (Ted McGinley) and "Ogre" (Donald Gibb). They call Gilbert and Lewis nerds, and the label sticks with them. To make matters worse for Lewis and Gilbert, they are forced to move out of their dorm to make way for the Alpha Betas because they burned their own house down. The nerds are forced to live in the college gym. While in the gym, Lewis and Gilbert make some new friends, including Poindexter (Tim Busfield), "Booger" (Curtis Armstrong), Takashi (Brian Tochi), Wormser (Andrew Cassese), and Lamar (Larry B. Scott).

After failing to get accepted into any of the existing fraternities, the nerds decide to try to form their own, but Stan Gable vetoes their plans at the Greek Council. In order to be a recognized fraternity, they must have a national sponsor. So, the guys begin searching for one and they finally come across Lambda Lambda Lambda, who agrees to take them on a trial basis.

After the Betas and the Pis sabotage the tri-lambs' party, the tri-lambs vow revenge. A panty raid is planned for the pi house, while the jocks get a little something extra in their jocks. The news comes through that the nerds have been fully accepted as a tri-lamb chapter, which infuriates the Alpha Betas even more, and Stan will still not recognize the tri-lamb chapter. The nerds finally realize that the only way for them to get a fair shake is to win the homecoming carnival, so they could take over the presidency of the Greek council. With a strong showing in all three areas of the carnival, the tri-lambs succeed at winning, and are poised to take over the Greek Council, but at what cost? What will the Alpha Betas do now that they've lost control? Even Stan's girlfriend Betty Childs (Julie Montgomery) has left him for Lewis.

I've seen this movie many times, and it gets better with each viewing. Each scene in the movie is a classic, especially the panty raid on the pi's sorority house. The liquid heat scene is funny, too. The whole movie is loaded with scenes that will keep the viewer laughing throughout.

What makes this great DVD so special is the special features. There are several scenes which were deleted from the original movie, as well as a half-hour long segment in which the cast and crew talks about their experiences during the making of the movie, and how the movie became such a cult classic.

I give this DVD my highest recommendation. This movie was good before, but its gotten even better with the added features of this disc. If you were a fan of "Nerds" before, you'll be an even bigger fan after watching this great disc.

5 out of 5 stars An 80's comedy cult classic now better on DVD!.......2007-03-30

Two nerdy bestfriends Gilbert (Anthony Edwards) and Lewis (Robert Carridine) have just attended the university of Adams, the campus's jocks especially Ogre (Donald Gibb), Coach Harris (John Goodman), Stan Gable (Ted McGinley) and Burke (Matt Salinger) become hard on them treating them like outcasts. So Lewis and Gilbert with a group of other nerds (Timothy Busfield, Brian Tochi, Andrew Cassese. Curtis Armstrong, and Larry B. Scott) try to fit in with other fraternities on campus but get rejected until they decide to make their own fraternity to start a war with the jock infested Alpha Beta so they can prove that brains can win over brawn.

Hilarious comedy hit that gained a cult following since it's release, this is truly one of the 80's best comedies and rightfully so. The film is one of John Goodman's earliest roles before he was on "Rosanne", the movie also launched some cheap imitators and it's right up there with "Animal House" as the second best frat comedy ever! if you like a feel good comedy that is guaranteed to also make you laugh, then check out this one.

The special edition DVD has great remastered picture and sound with cool extras like audio commentary, "I'm a Nerd and pretty proud of it" featurette, a rare TV pilot for a "Revenge of the Nerds" TV show, deleted scenes, and the expected theatrical trailer.

Also recommended: "Animal House", "Porky's", "American Pie Trilogy", "Tommy Boy", "Dumb and Dumber", "Black Sheep", "There's Something about Mary", "Office Space" and "Back to School".

5 out of 5 stars Classic flick from the 80's finally gets the DVD treatment it deserves.......2007-03-07

There's just something about these comedies from the 80's that will always put a smile on the face of those of us who remember watching them for the first time back then, and hopefully, will also put a smile on the face of those of the younger generation who are discovering them now. "Revenge of the Nerds" is by far way up there among the better comedies from that decade. Sure, there's vulgarity here and there, but that doesn't take away from the humor and overall enjoyment. And one has to remember that the often un-politically correct aspect of many characters was common in the 80's.

And now this great film has finally gotten a DVD release that does it justice. The audio commentary by Jeff Kanew, Robert Carradine, Timothy Busfield and Curtis Armstrong is quite insightful and of course humorous, basically what one would expect. The "I'm a nerd, and I'm pretty proud of it" featurette has several of the actors talk about their experiences playing their roles. Nothing too spectacular, but definitely worth a look. The "Revenge of the Nerds" television pilot is certainly a nice feature, although mainly for novelty's sake. The 6 deleted scenes are "Stan Owes Nerd Money," "Gilbert Tells Judy How He Feels," "Tri-Lamb Vegas Convention," "Meet Uncle Meyer," "Chariot Race" and "Nerds Catch Jocks Destroying Their House." And finally, there is the trailer and a sneek peak of "Revenge of the Nerds 2: Nerds in Paradise." The DVD presentation offers a fairly nice transfer (a little grainy in some parts, which I suppose we can live with) and good sound quality-make sure to turn the volume way up for the Talent Show scene.

What else is there to say? If you're a fan, go out NOW and get this. Long live the Nerds!

And as a side note, the DVD insert has an advertisement for the "One Size Fits All" special edition of "Porky's," soon to be released. Be on the lookout for that too.

Away from her familiar high school setting, she proves resilient and inventive, outwitting the Mithril agent who's replaced Sousuke as her guard. But she can't kill the Chinese assassin and has to be rescued by an unlikely knight-errant: Commander Testarossa's brother Leonard and his mecha-body guards. As Kaname discovers untapped inner reserves in dangerous situations, Sousuke is running on empty. I got my movie sooner than expected. It was in a new like condition. Very nice and thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Very Sad and Dark.......2007-03-14

No, I am not saying that this was a horrible disc and you shouldn't buy it. I am saying this because all three episodes on this disc are very gloomy. I will give a quick summary of each episode.

    Episode 8:
After Sousuke is giving orders to stop protecting Kaname Chidori and return back to the Tuatha de Danaan (or TDD-1), he is in for a rude awakening. First, he stops by to see the submarine commander Teletha Testarossa (Tessa for short) who pretty much tells him that she gave the green light for Sousuke to return to the submarine-which means stop guarding Chidori-and start piloting the Arbalest full-time. Sousuke in his usual way disagrees, but doesn't come right out and say it. This causes Tessa for an outburst (tears included) and Sousuke just clamps up. From there, Sousuke meets his new Lieutenant and fails horribly at the test the new Lieutenant gave him.

    Episode 9:
Switch back to Kaname and see how she's doing. Well, she starts to suspect that someone is following her and decides to man up (or girl up in her case) and confront them. After getting a hotel room with a complete and total stranger, she gets to meet Mithril Intelligence Agent "Wraith"(F.Y.I. this "guy" is actually a girl). Wraith then tells her yes, she has been following her, but so as someone else. Enter Xia Yu Lan, the younger twin, who shoots Wraith and goes after Kaname. She attempts to kill Kaname, but fails after falling for an old trick in the book. Then enter Leonard Testarossa, Tessa's brother and a fellow Whispered. He orders his bodyguard (mini-AS) to kill Xia Yu Lan. And finally, he does the stupidest thing any guy could ever do-kiss Kaname on the lips...which leads to him getting slapped. And Kaname having a breakdown because Sousuke wasn't there to comfort her...like usual

    Episode 10:
Mitrhril is sent to Hong Kong to stop a rogue AS unit. (You get background on Melissa Mao) After reviewing possible scenarios, Mithril orders Melissa and her comrades on a very simple-yet tedious-mission: Search for the AS...not fun. Anyway, Melissa teams up with Sousuke, as they are passing through various checkpoints, Sousuke screws up royally by not focusing on the road (rather on his situation) and causes a traffic accident. Luckily, the AS shows up, kills a few guys and runs. Melissa and Sousuke get back in the van, with Melissa telling Sousuke that she doesn't wanna be responsible for his death and needs to man up. But instead of the usual Sousuke accepting the situation for what it is, he says okay and gets out of the van. Leaving the viewer (you) with a very simple question: What is Sousuke going to do?

Overall, I think I would have to say that this DVD is very dark compared to the other two. But it is a must buy because you get to see Tessa reveal how she feels about the "love triangle", Kaname finally revealing how she feels about Sousuke, and Sousuke finally realizing that though being a solider is great, its nice to have someone in your life who cares about you for WHO you are, not WHAT you are...

5 out of 5 stars FULL METAL PANIC! THE SECOND RAID TOP'S THE REST (PLUS OVERALL STORY OVERVIEW)!!!.......2007-02-07

To begin with, I will try to give a detailed and overall plot summary of the entire series -as much as it is possible- without giving to many spoilers away but SPOILERS WILL BE INCLUDED! Therefore, if you don't want to be given anything away to you, than do not read further.

First of all, as I described the first season this series have something for everyone and I do recommend them to anyone!

    To the story:

Now, a few details about the series besides the story:
    - It is 13 episodes long but fully pacted with action, the viewer will go through an emotional rolercoaster, has many twists, solid story and is by far the strongest season of all three.
    - The animation is even upgraded when comparing it with the first season
    - Music and dub are perfectly orchestrated
    - As for the price, a logical concern to everyone, well, it is the typical as the usuall price of anime (the price spectrum usually varies between 23 - 29 dollars.)

To sum up, if you liked the first and second season, than this one is defenitely highly recommended for you.

    I hope that I could help ^_^

5 out of 5 stars Great B&W flicks with very good DVD quality........2007-01-23

Both movies on DVD are fine showings of Laurel's and Hardy's talents. As always there is plenty of laughs and stants. Even my 7-year old daughter was laughing to tears. The quality of DVD - audio and video - is excellent, and maybe there are not too many extras, the movie itself is very satissfying. Highly recommended for Olie and Stan buffs and new-comers.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR SOME LAUGHS .......2006-12-17

This is a pretty good effort for a Warner home video dvd release. You get two Laurel & Hardy feature films on one single sided disc with nice artwork.Considering that these films are over 60 years old the audio & video quality is surprisingly good.If you're a fan of Laurel & Hardy, this dvd is definitely for you. This is good clean fun from one of the best comedy teams ever.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for releasing these to DVD: this pre-release review just mentions the content.......2006-09-18

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy made two feature films for M-G-M in the 1940s, which were overlooked when the rest of the team's M-G-M output was released to DVD earlier this year. These two films are often missing pieces in a Laurel & Hardy fan's collection, and having them both on one disc is a convenient and economical way to enjoy them.

AIR RAID WARDENS and NOTHING BUT TROUBLE have more heart than usual for wartime L & H comedies, and the scripts paint the "Stan and Ollie" characters as being conscientious underdogs instead of oblivious idiots, for a welcome change. Most fans' basic complaint is that both films use M-G-M's inflexible formula for comedy, as repeatedly applied to Buster Keaton and the Marx Brothers: the comedians reach a humiliating "low point," when things can't get any worse, only to bounce back to triumph and vindication. Be prepared for some scenes where Stan and Ollie are greatly humbled by a depressing turn of events. Good, straight acting by the leads, but not typically found in a Laurel & Hardy comedy.

AIR RAID WARDENS (1943) has our heroes trying to help their community in wartime by putting up posters (messily), attending a town meeting (distractingly), administering first aid (disastrously), asking Edgar Kennedy to please turn off his house lights (unsuccessfully), and finally foiling an enemy sabotage plot (and very successfully). A huge box-office hit in 1943 and a real "audience" picture: for best results watch this one with some friends.

NOTHING BUT TROUBLE (1944) has Stan and Ollie as the world's worst butler and chef, from a long line of bad butlers and chefs, who steal a lion's lunch, preside over Mary Boland's important dinner party with their usual aptitude, try to protect an exiled boy king from political assassins, and wind up being forced onto a window ledge high above the city streets (very well staged).

The "serious" plots weigh these films down at times, so try not to pay too much attention to them and concentrate on the L & H gags instead. The team's timing and comic skills are most of the show here, overcoming M-G-M's relentlessly stately pacing. Print quality should be outstanding, based on the usually impeccable M-G-M vault elements.

Multiple plot lines split off as the third season of Full Metal Panic! continues. The mercenary corps Mithril faces internecine quarrels as its leaders cope with a double agent. Melissa and Kurz go into action for the first time this season, with some help from Sousuke--although it keeps him from studying for midterms. Sousuke and Kaname get a rare, intimate moment when she gives him a much-needed haircut (after he nearly shoots up a salon). Mithril orders Sousuke to abandon the mission to protect Kaname: the sinister-sounding Wraith will assume that duty and Sousuke will return to piloting the super-mecha Arbalest. For the first time in his life, Sousuke is torn between obeying orders and genuine emotions. Kaname panics after passing one of the Chinese assassin sisters in the street, then discovers Sousuke has disappeared. The extras include more footage of location-scouting in Hong Kong and commentaries from some of the Japanese voice actors. Not much to say- much better than the first disc. If you liked any other Full Metal Panic, you should like this one. Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars FULL METAL PANIC! THE SECOND RAID TOP'S THE REST (PLUS OVERALL STORY OVERVIEW)!!! .......2007-02-07

5 out of 5 stars SOUSUKE WILL KILL FOR A HAIRCUT .......2007-01-24

Last volume, a lot of Mithril agents bit the dust and now it's payback time as Mao and Kurz team up to hunt down and capture the traitor in their midst who is now hiding with a Mafia don in Italy. Sousuke has to break from his midterm exams and Chidori's constant castigations to rescue the two from the busted result. Another organization, named Amalgam, was behind the attacks in Volume 2 and the viewer already knows that its psychotic leader wants to get his hands on the Arbalest. But Mithril only finds out about Amalgam now and is quite divided on how to deal with the situation, especially because they don't know how or if more of it's own agents have switched sides. This is what happens when you buy loyalty with money, since in the end, Mithril is a mercenary group. One topic under discussion is taking Sousuke away from his guard duty of Chidori!

I felt this second volume was a little more balanced between its serious and comedic sides than the first installment even though it sometimes melded the comic absurd with brief moments of intense gore. Or maybe I'm just getting reused to the style of the first season. I love this show in all its incarnations so far but the frosting on the cake happens in the best 6 or 7 minutes of all the series when Chidori gives Sousuke a haircut after he almost kills a hairstylist at a fancy salon. It's just her and Sousuke alone, and there is such a gentleness as she touches his hair and you can tell he completely trusts her....who am I kidding? You can tell he completely loves her, and she loves him! It's scenes such as these that you hardly see in any form of film, be it live action or animated. Beautiful. This is a great show, but why only THREE episodes per disk now? Seems like a bit of money grubbing. You're paying around $7 per episode which is a bit steep. They should have released the series on 3 dvds instead of 4 to give the consumer more value for his money.

The Second Raid (2005), the third installment of Full Metal Panic, picks up about two months after the first adventure ended (and ignores the second, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu). Sousuke tries to juggle active service with the mercenaries of Mithril and high school assignments tied to his efforts to protect Kaname. A mysterious enemy attacks in a remote Eurasian country and in China: It may be Gauron, the bloodthirsty terrorist Sousuke battled in the first series. He's accompanied by the assassins Yu Fang and Yu Lan, sisters who may also be lovers. Director Yasuhiro Takemoto stages hand-to-hand combat and a major mecha battle in a claustrophobic tunnel beneath the Yangtze River. When he's not engaged in deadly struggles, Sousuke remains as clueless as ever, and Kaname has fits at his excesses, although the tone of the show stays darker than the lunatic Fumoffu. The extras include footage of Takemoto and Shoji Gatoh, the author of the novels on which the series is based, scouting locations in Hong Kong and studying the equipment of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. Full Metal Panic the second raid captures the creativity of the the first series and brind all the action back that was M.I.A. in FMP:F. This is definatly the best action anime on the current scene.

5 out of 5 stars CRAZY CRACKPOT WANTS ANOTHER AS.......2006-12-21

After a slight comedic detour with Fumoffu, Full Metal Panic has returned to the roots of its first anime version, which focused more on the action and drama with interludes of humor. Like the first season, The Second Raid alternates between the the dangerous missions of Mithril and the almost as dangerous interactions between Sousuke and Chidori at school. As this excellent first volume begins, Sousuke and his team, the beautiful Mao and the perverted pretty boy Kurz are sent in to take out a despotic dictator who's managed to get his hands on some highly advanced weapons technology. We are also introduced to the main villain of the piece, a insane psychotic named Gates who is a cross between the charming personalities of the Joker and Darth Vader. The thing that makes him more of a threat is that he operates a Venom AS equipped with the Lambda Driver similar to the one Gauron used to almost kill Sousuke in the first show. But unlike Sousuke, he can activate the Driver at will. Sagara is beginning to lose hope that he will ever be able to control its power. But he might not have to worry too much longer, because Gates's plan is to seize Sagara's AS for himself. And he's got two deadly assassins and spies in Mithril to help him out.

This first volume started out a little rough at the edges because the transitions from Fumoffu style school hijinks to two killer sisters touching each other inappropriately in the shower just didn't gel. When the show focuses on one aspect, either the comedy, or the action/drama, it works incredibly well. But when it mixes the two in the same episode, it seems unnatural. Thankfully most of the dvd does the former. Even though this is rated for ages 14 and up, there is some full on nudity, and some extremely graphic violence. For example, a Mithril agent gets his throat cut with a knife in extreme closeup with nothing left to the imagination. The animation overall is incredible for a TV show and the writing is also pretty good, especially in the episodes where the Mithril team walks into a trap in a tunnel labyrinth, which really ratchets up the suspense. Excellent start to the series.

    DVD EXTRAS:
There is short bonus episode that is really a teaser trailer for the series. There are also three extremely interesting documentaries: The first is a Japanese Self-Defense Tour exhibition that the show's staff attended to get reference for the vehicles and weapons used in FMP. The second is location shooting in Hong Kong by the director and author of the novels which is a nice tour of the city. Finally, there is a brief history of the Light Novel in Japan, with a focus on the publisher of the FMP books. Also includes clean opening/closing.

5 out of 5 stars Originally funny, with fast-paced action.......2006-11-26

This is one original anime series, the story from the beginning has been taken from a Novel, instead of a Manga. I love the smart characters and even smarter plot line for the series. In a genre saturated with clone mecha anime, Full Metal Panic was a breath of fresh air, having the elements of well-written cohesive dialogue, stunning visuals, great music, and fabulous storylines primarily thanks to the genius of Japanese author Shouji Gatou. This third series, delivers the same elements found in the 1st and 2nd series.
This first volume of "The 2nd Raid" (TSR) series starts with a new enemy for Mithril and hidden dangers for Kaname Chidori; Sousuke Sagara in the meantime is faced with doubts about how he can handle Mithril's foremost Arm Slave(AS), the Arbalest. The new enemy is even more insane than Gauron and with him are two young female assassins that have a hidden agenda. The plot so far makes for a promising start to a series filled with conspiracies.

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2006-11-08

Based off the short Novel "End of Day by Day" by Shoji Gatoh, The Second Raid certainly lives up to its name. It truly is a second raid on the show. While not entirely revolutionary in the world of Mecha anime, Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid retains the same over-the-top marriage of Giants Robots and school comedy, with an emphasis on the robots this time around.

All the characters are back from season one, and have gotten a graphical overhaul. Kyoto Animation, perhaps most well known for producing the show Inu Yasha, has given the characters new life. The animation is smooth and rounder, and most often much darker and gritty than when Gonzo animated the first season. Kyoto was the same animation company who did "Fumoffu?" so many fans are already familiar with their work. The Mechas are back and look better than ever as well, with plenty of action and battle scenes for those who don't quite dig the romantic comedy aspect of the show.

I can't say enough about the story without giving it away, but all I can say is it flows much better than the first season did. The Second Raid is half the length of the first season and packs all the action from the novel into the story, with a few extra episodes added on as well. The shows flows nicely from episode to episode, making you want to watch them all in one sitting. With few lags in the plot you will most likely be left wanting more at the end, but don't worry. As long as Shoji Gatoh hasn't stopped writing novels and short stories (which he hasn't), there will always be more Panic!

3 out of 5 stars Very Solid WWII B Flick.......2007-06-25

TONIGHT WE RAID CALAIS is an enjoyable little piece of studio propaganda, with an efficient screenplay by Waldo Salt, and nice Fox production values. Annabella's not the most expressive of actresses (or particularly fluent in English, for that matter), and she's a bit mature and lacquered for Odette, the picture's farm-girl heroine. But she rallies nicely for the film's flag-waving action climax. The glory of this picture's the supporting cast; stalwarts such as Beulah Bondi, Lee J. Cobb, Marcel Dalio and Blanche Yurka elevate the picture from run-of-the-mill into a real pleasure for film buffs. Handsome black-and-white photography, in a fine transfer. No all-time classic, but most worthwhile.

The only addition in the Starter Set is a box to hold the discs. (Rated TV 14: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, tobacco use, nudity with suggested lesbianism) --Charles Solomon
