4 out of 5 stars pretty bad movie all the way through, but a great final fight.......2006-05-26

And in this fight I witnessed THE ALLTIME COOLEST KUNG FU STYLE I HAVE EVER SEEN.

So Hwang Jang Lee(Wong Cheng Li) stars as the 9th? prince. Can't remember what # he was but there weren't any other princes so it doesn't matter. Now if the final fight would have been your normal crappy fight, this would have gotten a 2/5. But since it freaking blew me away at the end, it easily gets it's four stars. Hoi mang saves the prince from an assasination early in the movie and this leads to many comic moments and then of course a mster training the student to become deadly enough to beat the super secret style that Hwang posesses. There is actually a lot more to this story, but just seems to drag on when they are trying to explain it. But the story will keep you into it since it is WAY better than a godfrey ho or thomas tang movie. So at the end of the film(luckily I was awake) it actually picks up a little bit. Hoi mang(grey haired kid with scar from hellz windstaff) puts on a true display of his awesome acrobatic abilities in his training sequence. His master isn't the greatest fighter. But please, please, please stick around for the final fight. Truly one of the coolest things I ever seen in cinema history.

The xenon wutang collection version is fine. Picture quality is a bit poorer than normal and fulscreened of course, but still very watchable. The bonus fight scenes have 2 good ones.

CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME IF THEY KNOW OF A WIDESCREENED VERSION OF THIS ON VHS OR DVD? PLEASE ONLY PUT IT ON HERE IF YOU ACTUALLY HAVE VIEWED THAT VERSION AND NOT JUST HEARD ABOUT IT.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars For Film - I Don't Know The Quality Of This DVD.......2003-06-22

I've got the World Video DVD version of this film. It's pan and scan, English dubbed, but the image is nice and clear. The only beef I have is the authoring was poorly done because the image freezes for a couple of seconds as the DVD switches chapters. Also, at about the half way mark, the chapter count resets to 1, which is strange.
If you've seen Hell'z Windstaff, which features both Meng Hoi and Hwang Jang Lee, than you'll get a good idea of the pacing of the fight coreography. It's nice and fast (not Jackie Chan 80's fast, but fast enough), and doesn't rely on undercranking. The story is pretty the usual Shaolin against Manchu fare. I didn't like the weapons fighting scene towards the end which had Lung Fei and some other guy up against the protagonist Meng Hoi - I thought it was too slow. But the finale is awesome. Also, there aren't as many fight scenes as Hell'z Windstaff, but there are enough to keep the viewer interested.
A great old school flick with great fight coreography that is real time rather than sped up or using frame cutting to speed up the fights. Meng Hoi is a very agile, acrobatic martial artist. Too bad he took a back seat in the 80's by doing coreography planning rather than acting and fighting.

5 out of 5 stars a classic film!.......2007-02-15

whooo...i never expected the flick was going to be great....the storyline is about the ching dynasty tyring to go to taiwan to kill general cheng from the ming dynasty. However the plan was cut short when the prince of the ching dynasty was assasinated by one of the mings guards(wong)....the general assigned eagle (white haired guy) on taking charge with the military and to go after wong.
On the other hand, Liu is a wanderer who take his skills to the test against wong. At first he does not have any side to anyone until he found the secret of the necklace worn by a beautiful japanese lady who looks after wong. There is a good twist on the story during this part.

Ok the action is off the chain...liu is a really good kicker. He shows combination of side, front, and round flying kicks. He also does a great high flying power kick. His a versatile fighter because his great at both arm and leg combat and it is the same case for the villain eagle. Both of them really shines and delivers a raw martial art battle with no wire but pure martial arts creative demonstration. As far as for wong, his fighting skills are limited to the arm. Wong barely uses his legs making him vulnerable from the high front downward kick by eagle. However, wong does manage to do a high flying kick but only a few time. The final fight scene is just outstanding for a good classic kung fu film....very creatively done.

I also want to mention about the great coountryside of which this movie takes place, showing great view of mountains and rivers during fights.

The sound is great and the picture is alright which comes in full screen. If u interested on great classic kung fu film then u should definetely give this movie a shot, im glad i did thats why i give this movie a grade of 4.5/5 enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars lots of fights!.......2006-12-11

This movie really caught me by surprise!! . It came as a double feature the other movie was crap. I would gladly pay twenty times what i paid. Its old school at its absolute best. you don't have to fast forward much to get to fights and there fantastic! As far as a plot? I was too distracted by the action. There isn't a whole lot of goofiness like a lot of martial art flicks. The picture quality of my dvd is very decent. If you old school collectors miss this then you been cheated. Oh by the way there aren't a large variety of different fighters but the 3 main fighters carry it over the top

1 out of 5 stars bad image quality.......2006-06-20

First of all, it's english dubbing. Not japanese language. Subtitle is not available.
The worst is bad transformation from (whatever format) to DVD. Just bad DVD.. i wish never purchased this DVD. Bad Bad Bad Bad DVD...

4 out of 5 stars great kung fu in what had ot be one of the cheapest movies of all time.......2006-04-24

Now if you were to tell me that they made this movie in less than a week, I would easily believe you. The story is almost non existent with no good twists, just everything as standard as can be. But the fu gets 5 stars EASY. There are only 3 people who really fight and man do they shine. Don wong and liu ho at it again and I would have to say their fitht was better than the short ones in secret rivals. Wong isn't the greatest, but he looks tough as hell and can pull out some high flying kicks. The last reviewer mistook him for lo lieh, hwo he did that I have no idea, but he also said they teamed up on the white hair guy which leads me to believe he has not seen this. But if there is movie with liu and lieh teaming up, then tell me what you were wathcing. So basically wong and liu have to team up agianst eagle han after wong went agianst him and liu and wong go p against a lot of other people. I have to say that ALL the fight scenes in this movie kicked as, not just the final one. And there is a scene where the camera cuts and goes to a huge zoom out shot, and wong's and han's doubles are the most ridiculous things i have ever seen. They do great acrobatics but the hair for eagle's double is truly a kung fu classic moment. All in all, enough fights for a no story-line high-kicking cheapie. Picture quality is of course the standard MAT full screen, but hey, at least i have seen this now.

4 out of 5 stars The Death Duel of Kung Fu - A MUST SEE CLASSIC!.......2005-08-26

The fighting scenes awesome. I'm talking about the guy with the tremendous kicking and splitting abilities. If you want to see a guy wax the behind of his enemies while being doubled and trippled teamed by splitting and kicking - well this is the flick for you. In my opinion this guy is the real star of this flick. He brings the real energy here. I'm telling you his kicks are devestating! No swords, no knives, no partners - NO PROBLEM!

The other guy ((Lo Lieh), he was a little lame throughout but in the end when he teamed up with the leg fighter to beat up the classic white haired villan he seemed to come alive. The plot is there - at least it has one! This is a must see classic for all old school Kung Fu fans.

The last fighting scene was totally awesome as well as a bit funny to me. There's nothing like a flying punch in your face unawares! I'm glad they brought this one to DVD!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars One of Lung Fei's best performances, but nothing else stands out.......2007-04-07

This is just another ordinary kung fu flick. It starts out interesting with a young orphan who has been raised by gangsters. The leader of the gang is Lung Fei and after the kid learns his chicken style, he is now the gang's top henchman. After meeting a mantis master who has a score to settle with Lung Fei, the young man has to decide whether or not to remain a gangster. He loves the mantis teacher's daughter, but he also loves Lung Fei as a father figure.

The story itself is pretty boring, but Lung Fei shows to be a good actor. The main star's love interest is not a good actress, but she has some very good fighting skills. The plot definitely had potential, and while the movie is not too cheesy, the story just isn't done very well.

The reason to get this movie is for Lung Fei. This is definitely one of his best performances and while the chicken style is usually used comically, Lung Fei doesn't play around!

The star of the movie is not bad. His acting is beyond awful but he is not a bad fighter and his acrobatics are the only reason he is worth watching.

Not a good movie, but not bad for die hard fans of the genre.

2.5/5

DVD from Videoasia has very bad picture quality, but it's still watchable, for me at least. The DVD works, at least Videoasia got that part right on this release. If you are new to Videoasia movies, then always expect the worst.

4 out of 5 stars 5 For Movie - Minus 1 For Image Quality........2003-09-22

This is a very engaging movie. The story itself is alright. It's about an orphan named Xiao Hai, played by Ting Wa-Chung, who is raised by a crime boss played by Lung Fei, and begins to learn the Chicken fist when he falls for a girl who is a mantis fist expert, played by Kam Yin-Fei.

The reason to get this film is the fight coreography. While it kind of looks undercranked, it's not obvious, unlike some of those Alexander Lo Rei 'Ninja' films during the 80's. And the treat is watching Kam Yin-Fei. She is AWESOME. Not only does she have a lot of power, reminiscent of Michelle Yeoh's on-screen fighting, but she's also very acrobatic. She does as many flips and leg sweeps as the lead character Xiao. Xiao is not a very sympathetic character, but he is a great on-screen fighter and verry acrobatic. He does multiple flips in one spot, not unlike Li Yi Min in some of his films. Lung Fei is also great, but there is some body doubling when his character does some flips.
The downside of this DVD is the picture quality. It is full screen and looks like it was taken from a VHS source. I also had a problem with the sound effects during the fight scenes, but I think that was more a fault of the original makers of the films. Some of the body blows, for instance, had the same sound effect as the 'slap' sound made when one guy blocks a hit with his arms. You realize how important proper sound effects are to making a fight work in a kung fu film.
The special features are interesting, but nothing special. Gordon Liu's interview isn't very enlightening. It's rather distracting that the voice doing the translating only picks out every other sentence (it's like he only had one shot at translating), he translates for both the interviewer AND Liu, and in his British accent, he sometimes throws in British terms, like 'bloke'. The demonstration of Hung Gar is interesting, but is more for show than actual learning value.
Overall, the film deserves a 5. The fight coreography is well paced and top notch. And watch for the girl. It's a wonder why she didn't do any other kung fu films of note. She could have been another Moon Lee or Michelle Yeoh if she was doing her thing in the late 80's. 'Death Duel Of Mantis' - a film you shouldn't pass up on.

3 out of 5 stars I bought this 2-pack for one thing, good fu. thank god that john liu, don wong tao, and eagle han do not dissapoint.......2006-04-24

The bad first,
sorry ti lung

INHERITOR OF KUNG FU-Now the movie itself is horrible and I will certainly elaborate on that in a minute. But the chick from snake crane secret is in this one, this is the third flick I have seeen her in and while she can't fight whatsoever, she is REALLY hot. I think it has both the chicks but just to be clear, I am talking about the one with 2 pony tail braids. Yeah, that one.

Anyway the movie itself is not even worth one viewing. I got this cause it costed nothing and it had a commentary. I made the mistake of watching the movie and then the commentary. Now at the end, the final fight scene is almost half way made up of good fights. There is a guy who looks like jack long, you may recognize this guy as one of the many fighters in both chess boxing and 7 grandmasters. He has a fight with mark in chess, and a fight with jack in 7 grandmasters. He is really freaking good, well add in a korean superkicker you probably recognize as the 2 boys teacher in hellz windstaff, he is also john liu's first teacher in fighting ace. And then add in ti lung looking pretty good, and if this movie took longer than two days, I would not only be surprised, but I might have actually like this.

Now the commentary is kind of bad. When bobby samuels notices that they are watching an f grade movie(ya didn't know there was a f class, did ya), he points it out quick and ric myers isn't allowed to hide anything. If you don't believe me of how bad this movie is, then you can waste like 5 dollars on it and hear ric myers honestly call this the worst movie he has ever done a commentary for. But since on IMDB, no one has reviewed this, I doubt anyone will back me up on this anytime soon. And the commentary really isn't that good, they are not really able to name any of the other actors, except the korean superkicker. And they don't even mention what other movies he has been in like kung fu for sale or hellz windstaff. The only thing I got out of this hour and a half commentary is the superkicker was a police trainer and would show his strength by having cars run over him. Hey, at least I got something out of this.

So if you buy this, or have it, it is only worth one viewing max, so just watch it with the commentary on and fastforward to the final scene if you need to. BTW, the end makes no sense, bu tthere is some good fu, but if someone actually can break down this story, then I want to hear it.

DEATH DUEL OF KUNG FU-Now if you were to tell me that they made this movie in less than a week, I would easily believe you. The story is almost non existent with no good twists, just everything as standard as can be. But the fu gets 5 stars EASY. There are only 3 people who really fight and man do they shine.

Overall the 2pack si worth is if yuo get it for like 10 bucks or less.

          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Really poor quality DVD ruins pretty good movie.......2005-08-16

Since I am a old school kung fu enthusiast, I am used to grainy images and poor dubbing... however, this quality is very poor. Most of the movie is too dark to be seen and I had to adjust my screen to get a half decent picture. I really wish I could find a better copy because the story and fighting isn't half bad; its sad to see.

My feeling is that this DVD should be in the $4.98 range - you can get much better movies out ther efor 10 bucks... go to "Kung Fu for the Sole" Listmania to find a few of my favorites.
