The Guardian offers satisfying entertainment with a no-nonsense combination of Hollywood formula and good old-fashioned star power. While honoring the men and women who serve as rescue swimmers for the U.S. Coast Guard, this predictable yet appealing drama is a well-crafted showcase for Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher, who bring welcome depth and dimension to their formulaic roles. It's basically Top Gun for the Coast Guard, with Costner playing a legendary rescuer haunted by recent tragedy and the impending break-up of his marriage, and Kutcher as the hot-shot recruit whose bravado is tested when Costner takes over a grueling 18-week basic training course, where a 50% attrition rate ensures that only the best will make the grade. There's nothing particularly inventive about Ron L. Brinkerhoff's screenplay, but it's intelligently written and well-directed (by The Fugitive helmer Andrew Davis) as it shows how seasoned veteran and troubled but talented trainee build mutual respect while sorting through the trauma of accidents that left each of them as sole survivors, tormented by self-doubt and guilt.

Bolstered by a strong supporting cast including Neal McDonough, John Heard, Sela Ward and Clancy Brown, The Guardian is a bit on the long side (137 minutes), but it never feels slow, and a romantic subplot (with Kutcher wooing a schoolteacher played by Melissa Sagemiller) blends nicely with thrilling ocean-rescue sequences incorporating a seamless blend of CGI and footage shot in a 750,000-gallon water tank. Music fans will welcome the scene-stealing appearance of veteran singer Bonnie Bramlett as the owner of a jazz/blues club near the training base, where The Guardian serves up yet another staple of its genre: the barroom brawl. Although Hurricane Katrina prevented The Guardian from being filmed in New Orleans in 2005, real-life footage during the closing credits makes it clear that the Coast Guard was essential in Katrina's aftermath, and this rousing drama pays overdue tribute to those who risk there lives (to quote the Coast Guard's motto) "so that others may live." --Jeff Shannon

Description

Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher star in THE GUARDIAN, the powerful, action-packed drama that takes you inside the never-before-seen world of the elite Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers. Reeling with grief in the wake of a mission gone tragically wrong, legendary Rescue Swimmer Ben Randall (Costner) is given a mission he doesn't want — training raw recruits. Once there, he knocks heads with cocky Jake Fischer (Kutcher), a swimming champ driven by a painful secret, who's more interested in breaking Ben's records than saving lives. But Ben also sees Jake has what it takes to be the best of the best. Filled with spectacular rescues in the lethal waters of the Bering Sea, THE GUARDIAN is a riveting and compelling story that dives straight into the heart and soul of real heroes, the unsung guardians of the sea.

4 out of 5 stars Routine but effective male bonding tale.......2007-06-24

This movie is undeniably formulaic and routine - and yet it is such a proficiently created variation on the genre of `grizzled-veteran-turns-brash-rookie-into-professional' that you can't help liking it for what it is.
Costner is for once well cast as the seasoned coast guard swimmer who has to turn to training recruits after a nasty and well shot incident where he loses his crew. There, he meets Ashton Kuchter. Kuchter plays the young cocky upstart who learns valuable life and work lessons from the veteran. All routine stuff..? Absolutely, and yo can be forgiven at times for thinking you are watching a remake of Top Gun... but it has a sense of real conviction - and in picking coastguards for a subject we have all the clichés of military-like-training, without the negative connotations - only thoroughly decent heroes out to save lives. After a lengthy training period, the movie finishes with Kuchter's start working in Kodiak, Alaska with Costner's character. Kuchter has definitely developed some acting chops and fits well, with Costner being the glue that holds the movie together. It ends up being a tad too long, but all the ingredients are seasoned enough that it's worth the wait to get through to the end.
Extras include a few deleted scenes of interest, an alternative ending which was rightfully dropped, and two slight press kit add ons - one about the making of the movie and one about the coastguards. Just the right amount to cover the movie.
Emotions are successfully wrung by director, music composer and production designer, and Costner and Kuchter are on top form. Don't be as sceptical as I was - it's not as bad as some critics have maintained..

5 out of 5 stars moving, a story about true heroes of the coast gaurd.......2007-06-08

this movie is very good. i enjoyed it alot and kevin costner's and Ashton Kutchur's performance was awesome. This is a must see movie.

5 out of 5 stars Hurray for the Coast Guard!.......2007-05-30

I am so glad the CG is getting some recognition for all the hard work they do and sacrafices they make! Thanks Coast Guard!

4 out of 5 stars Good movie..........2007-05-28

Good to see Kevin Costner back in a hero role. I liked this movie a lot, with the exception of the "supernatural" part of the ending, which I thought was a bit strange, considering the rest of the movie was a straight-forward look at the life of rescue swimmers in the Coast Guard.

To those people who say that this film is predictable and formulaic, what else would you do with it? Do you want aliens to invade or have them fighting a sea monster, what?? The Coast Guard was with them every step of the way in making this film and making it sure it was authentic. There were several actual CG guys in the film. It's a military film, folks, meant to depict what these men and women go through every day, and I think it does that better than any other film of its type. They didn't go into Delta Force territory and try to make their male characters one-dimensional macho cardboard cutouts. They spend a lot of this movie showing the emotional toll this takes not only on the CG personnel themselves but on their relationships. Thank goodness for that! I was also happy, as a 50-ish woman, to see Costner paired with Sela Ward instead of a 20-something young thing (despite the fact he's married to one in real life, I guess!) and I could sympathize with the depiction of his character's sadness at seeing his physical body unable to do what it could do at 19.

If you want Shakespeare go watch a different movie. If you want something unpredictable go watch Memento or The Prestige. But if you want to see a movie that faithfully depicts what it takes to be one of the heroes of the Coast Guard, then see this film. And make sure to check out the special features.

5 out of 5 stars A Nuts-and-Bolts Lesson on the US Coast Guard.......2007-05-23

This movie goes far beyond entertainment and adventure. It gives the viewer a detailed picture of the operations of the United States Coast Guard. Few people realize the enormous challenges and dangers faced by members of this elite group. I personally have come to see the Coast Guard in a new light.

The viewer learns the challenges faced by young men who want to become Coast Guard rescuers. A grueling school puts the volunteers through such rigors as treading water one hour, pushing blocks underwater as a team (while one man at a time goes up for air, and the other waits for him), enduring and operating in freezing water and the specter of hypothermia, and fighting off a rescuee who is desperately clinging to the rescuer.

The social life of the Coast Guard members is also shown. Ben Randall, one of the protagonists in this film, has a failing marriage. One of the recruits enters into a Navy bar and gets into a fight by bragging about the heroics of the Coast Guard.

There are also some action shots of actual rescues. A ship is sinking, and the captain is trapped below fallen pillars. Soon one of the rescuers himself is trapped, and his air bubble is rapidly dwindling to zero. Rescue swimmer Ben Randall has a delayed retirement forced by his participation in this rescue. Two movie endings are available relative to his fate: A though-provoking, heroic ending, in contrast to a different, happy ending.

Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra star in this visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death. Neurologist Chris and artist Annie had the perfect life until they lost their children in an auto accident; they're just starting to recover when Chris meets an untimely death himself. He's met by a messenger named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and taken to his own personal afterlife--a freshly drawn world reminiscent of Annie's own artwork, still dripping and wet with paint. Meanwhile a depressed Annie takes her own life, compelling Chris to traverse heaven and hell to save Annie from an eternity of despair.

The multitextured visuals seem to have been created from a lost fairy tale. Heaven recalls the landscape paintings of Thomas Cole and Renaissance architecture complete with floating cherubs, while hell is a massive shipwreck, an upside-down cathedral overgrown with thorns and a sea of groaning faces popping out of the ground (one of those faces is German director Werner Herzog). Williams is the perfect actor to play against the imaginative computer-generated imagery--he himself is a human special effect. But the lack of chemistry between Williams and Sciorra is painfully apparent, and the flashback plot structure flattens the story's impact despite its deeply felt examinations of the heart and the spirit. Still, there's no denying Eugenio Zanetti's triumphant production design and the Oscar-winning special effects, which create a fully formed universe that is at once beautiful, eerie, and a unique example of movie magic. --Shannon Gee

1 out of 5 stars flat, unoriginal, and over-done.......2007-06-13

This is pretty bad: a guy dies and lives on in some bizarre afterworld, where he rights certain wrongs and gets an idiotically sentimental philosophical perspective on his life and love. Then, of course, he takes a dare and changes the destiny of his great love, etc.

The film totally failed to sweep me into some believable fastasy, but just came off as pretentious and emotionally flaccid. It is a total bore and there is nothing new whatsoever.

It seems that this is not a general opinion, given the other reviews, but this is how I saw iy and I cannot change that if I want to be honest. Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Films ever made!.......2007-06-04

This film opens the mind and heart to explore life after death and the very meaning of love. It is totally out of the box and is like nothing else that has been done about life after death. The messages are there and so is the love. This is a film that should be seen at least once - perhaps, several times. It has some worthy issues to think about and may be an enlightening resource to some people.

Robin Williams is at his best with a great script and wonderful and inspiring filming!

Perhaps if The Bishop's Wife had lapsed on its copyright and fallen into the public domain like It's a Wonderful Life, it would be as much a Christmas staple as that classic. It certainly deserves to be. Dudley (Cary Grant) is an angel sent down by the prayers of a new bishop (David Niven). The bishop is trying to build a new cathedral, and he's so entrenched in his fundraising that he's watching his own marriage crumble around him. Loretta Young is devoted, moist-eyed, and basically a great date for the tempted Dudley. They drink in the afternoon, go skating at night, and make impulse buys. The skating sequence beats mightily on one's suspension of disbelief, but the rest of the film is an absolute joy. Grant is suave, worldly, and enchanting. A wonderful present for anyone who has not seen it. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars The Bishop's Wife.......2007-06-25

Nominated for Best Film at the 1947 Oscars, Henry Koster's sweet, thoroughly charming "Bishop's Wife" was a big crowd-pleaser in its day, and has since become one of our more cherished holiday films. Cary Grant was never smoother playing Dudley, the most debonair of angels. Co-starring David Niven and a dazzling Loretta Young as the title character, this joyful, witty film still has something to say about keeping the spirit of Christmas alive all year round.

5 out of 5 stars Touched by an Angel - A Heart Warming Story .......2007-06-05

If you are looking for a movie to watch on Christmas day with your family, you must include this heart warming story about an angel who intervene the busy lives of an Episcopalian bishop named Henry Brougham (David Niven) and his wife Julia (Loretta Young). This movie is set in Yuletide spirit with bells ringing, choir singing, Christmas wreaths decorating the walls of churches, homes, shops and buildings, and streets and neighborhoods covered with fresh snow. During this time, an angel named Dudley (Cary Grant) enters the lives of the bishop and his wife as an office assistant. At the Victorian home of Bishop Henry not everything is going well. Years of neglect about his own family left Julia on her own while the bishop is busy raising funds for a new cathedral. Dudley's attentiveness, charm, and sheer magical powers drive Julia to him, but Dudley is only interested in helping Henry to get back with Julia. The writers have cleverly crafted many moments between Dudley and Julia that would be purely romantic, but writers did not forget to remind us that Dudley is an angel and he is not romancing Julia. Several instances of walking down the street, driving in the country and having lunch at local cafeteria makes her feel that she is appreciated as a woman. The magical ice-skating scene where Dudley charms everyone with his skating ability, and helps Julia to glide on ice is a memorable scene of the movie.

Dudley's "angelic" effect is felt by many: He touches the lives of people he comes in contact with. As the friendship between Julia and Dudley becomes strong, Henry begins to feel that Dudley is a devil trying to steal his wife, but soon all ends well when Dudley completes his job by helping Henry to raise money for the cathedral. Cary Grant is spectacular and charms not only Julia but many viewers. I was most impressed by the performance of Julia who is attracted to Dudley; she is tender, romantic, and vulnerable, yet she also knows that she is a wife and a mother.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie for all ages.......2007-01-18

I've seen it numerous times and still find it exceedingly funny. For those of you that don't like corneyness, this might not be the best choice.

3 out of 5 stars Good chemistry, but campy story & too little love too late........2006-12-05

The actors were wonderful and had great chemistry together. But the comedy was too forced, the tale too campy, especially at the end, and the love was too little too late in the storyline.

5 out of 5 stars Best in the Trilogy!.......2006-08-07

Oh, this movie is pure joy on an ice cream stick. If you like to smile and see people that shouldn't be rapping singing rap songs (for comic effect!) then this is the movie for you.

Get ready to be delighted by Ted Danson's debonair character that all the women love, and Tom Selleck's brainy hearthrob that make all the women swoon, and Steve Guttenberg.

You know what my favorite part of the movie is? You guessed it. The Little Lady. Because in Three Men and a Baby, the Baby couldn't have any silly little lines because it was too young (and was a baby). But now--spoiler alert!--the baby grew up to be a Little Lady, and she says wisecracks that are both precious and life-affirming.

Three Men and a Little Lady is probably the most dramatic movie you'll ever see, and that's including Awakenings, where everyone gets healthy and then sick again.

3 out of 5 stars needs a director's cut and another sequel.......2006-07-07

3 Men and a Baby was a one of a kind comedy that showed three men struggling to take care of a baby girl. Six years later (this sequel was actually made three years after the original) Tom Selleck, Ted Danson, and Steve Guttenberg are raising and rooming with the little lady known as Mary as well as Mary's mother (Nancy Travis) who returns from her brief role in the first movie to play a larger role in this one. Does the sequel hold up to the first? To a degree I can say it does. The humor is good and so is the acting for the most part. I felt, however, that this film was a bit rushed. There were not any major plot holes to speak of but I wish that the movie had of been a bit longer than what it was. I just want to point out that Leonard Nimoy did not return to direct this film. Plus, the dvd like 3 Men and a Baby has no features though unlike 3 Men and a Baby cannot be viewed in widescreen. 3 Men and a Little Lady is certainly worth viewing despite these minor flaws. While I can see why some people favor the original a bit more, this sequel is a decent follow-up that shouldn't be missed. It would have been nice for another sequel to come out in which Mary is a teenager along with Selleck, Danson, Guttenberg, and Travis returning for a third time. Oh well, I guess that is just wishful thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than "Three Men and a Baby".......2005-08-03

This is one of those rare situations where the sequel is significantly better than the original film.

"Three Men and a Baby" was a girl flick -- silly plot, cute baby, three men acting like Alan Alda (i.e., effeminate), enough to make any reasonable person want to throw up.

"Three Men and a Little Lady" is infinitely superior, and funnier. I never thought much of Ted Danson until I saw the final scene in this film, in which he plays a senile Anglican priest -- a comic masterpiece that is alone worth the price of the disk.

Karas: the Prophecy (2005) is the first installment in an OVA marking the 40th anniversary of Tatsunko Productions, the studio that made Speed Racer, Gatchaman, and Generator Gawl. Karas was obviously a big-budget production, and the English dub features Jay Hernandez, Matthew Lillard, and Piper Perabo. Karas ("The Crow") is the guardian spirit of Tokyo, but the city is thrown into disarray when Eko, a former Karas, returns and attempts to seize power. Yurine, an entity who embodies the will of the people, summons Nue, a sort of Karas-in-training, to defeat Eko. The two-part fantasy saga borrows from numerous animated and live-action sources, including Ghost in the Shell II, Demon City Shinjuku, Spider-Man, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Action fans may enjoy the aerial combats, sword fights between armored foes, 2-D/3-D transformations, explosions, monster attacks, and car chases, but director Keiichi Sato's nervous camerawork and choppy cutting rob what should be show-stopping scenes of their punch. Although highly anticipated, Karas is an overproduced mess. (Unrated, suitable for ages 17 and older: graphic violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Description

MIKURA IS ON THE RISE AGAIN... Tokyo - a city populated by both humans and by ghostly beings. They exist in both dimensions, seen and unseen: spirits, apparitions, demons. The balance between these two dimensions has long been upheld by the city's guardian raven Karas and his masters. But that balance has been thrown into disarray as Eko, a former Karas, has attempted to seize power and bring order to the streets through force. The entity Yurine, who represents the will of the people, stands in his way with her newly risen Karas. Now an ageless battle stretching across both dimensions and killing humans and spirits alike is in progress between the two sides and their armies. Karas is humanity's last hope.

5 out of 5 stars A Must See.......2007-07-04

This beautiful film is candy for the eyes and mind. The traditional animation is flawlessly blended with the CGI, giving a wider variety of visual effects that are unique and ingenius in their creativity.

The story itself is a bit confusing the first time around. It mixes the modern day world with otherworldly happenings. A basic knowledge of Japanese mythic and supernatural beings and their cultural standings would be helpful, but not neccessary.

I really like the animation style and character designs. The movie is beautiful and extremely interesting. Hopefully the sequel will answer so many questions left over from this film.

5 out of 5 stars Needs the sequel.......2007-07-01

Darkly excellent. For the price, you can't miss but the end leaves you hanging and in need of the sequel. It's that good! But it's only half the story! Or part of the story. Could this be the beginning of a series of feature length episodes? Now that's exciting! I can't think of anything to say that's bad about Karas. Everything is very well done. It's just not finished. Buy it! Or just get it! You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-21

This is some of the best anime I've seen. The visuals are great. The action sequences are some of the best. I compare it to the fight scene between Cloud Strife and Sephiroth in Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children.
You may have to watch it twice to digest everything in it. This is one of the only movies that I can watch over and over again never tire of it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing movie .......2007-03-23

This movie is grate can't wait for part 2 to come out

5 out of 5 stars Easter Egg!.......2007-03-19

I stumbled along an easter egg when I rented this movie.
(I hope I explain this right, I rented it a while ago)
Go the the extras menu and highlight the top most extra. Then, press the right arrow button and you should be highlighting a spot in the upper right corner. It might take a few tries, but it is well worth it if you liked the english voice actors!

This was a great movie and I want to buy it as soon as I have the money! The animation was spectacular and music was...AWESOME! I'm not a big fan of CG animation and robot/weird armor, but somehow in this movie it didn't really bother me!

Watch this movie! At times it might be alittle confusing, but I heard another one was coming out soon that should help clear things up!

1 out of 5 stars Get the DVD instead.......2007-04-01

Don't waste your money on the Blu-Ray for this movie! Just get the DVD instead, that is IF you want it at all.

I tried to get around the fact that nearly all movies with Kevin Costner (like Tom Hanks) would be infinitely better without him, but even so, this movie is just plain silly. It is a shame, since the job the USCG does is definitely worth telling. And shockingly, from anti-American Hollywood, the move does portray the USCG favorably. Unfortunately, too much of the movie is as removed from reality as most other military related stuff out of Hollywood. I certianly wish those slugs in Congress would spend enough money on the military to build such technologically advanced and heavily manned operations centers as in this movie!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A fun movie with high quality video and audio.......2007-03-28

This movie is very entertaining to watch on a regular DVD but the experience is very much enhanced with the Blu-Ray Disk. The video is stunning and the audio is very good. I enjoyed seeing Ashton Kutcher in a dramatic role for a change. He is still very funny in the outtakes.

5 out of 5 stars The Guardian ( Blu-Ray).......2007-03-08

Out Standing Picture Quality that you expect from your Blu-Ray home System " Highly Recommended " A great story to watch by everybody at Home.

4 out of 5 stars Deceptively good movie.......2007-03-08

If it weren't for the "officer and a gentleman" ending complete with power chords, which I found to be a little odd, this would have been a 5. Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher gave some solid believable performances, it is too bad someone decided that there needed to be the romantic thing at the end. It was actually quite moving until that non-sequitor jarred the mood.

Description

Captivating and disturbing, this intense psychodrama with its haunting, twisted notion of sexuality puts a new spin on the characters from Henry James' celebrated ghost story, "The Turn of the Screw." MARLON BRANDO stars as QUINT, a gardener who powerfully impacts the lives of young orphans Miles and Flora, who are left in the care of their governess (STEPHANIE BEACHAM) and housekeeper (THORA HIRD). Obsessed with the charismatic Quint, the children are mesmerized by his warped views of love and life and soon pattern their own lives after his crude, secret courtship with their governess. When the housekeeper finds out about the lovers' relationship, she decides to fire them, leaving the bereft children to take matters into their own chilling hands.

3 out of 5 stars A curiosity.......2007-06-29

The famous prequel to "The Innocents" is finally available on DVD, but sadly it could never come close to the subtle perfection of that classic. Still, it's still an interesting film. Starring Marlon Brando and Stephanie Beacham, it imagines a possible scenario that may have been played out between Quint and Miss Jessell (who are already dead at the start of the action in the original novel, "The Turn Of The Screw"), and the two children who interact with them. A new governess is left with the psychological mess they left behind in the minds of these children, and that is the role played by Deborah Kerr in the 1960 classic, but it forms just the tail end of the film we have here.
First of all, Marlon Brando does a good job as the gardener/handyman. He portrays just the right amount of latent brutality and sex appeal to convince you that a prim governess could fall under his spell. I'm no Brando expert, and it may be that he is just playing himself, but it works...my only quibble is his rather thickly laid-on Irish accent which sounds a bit too forced to totally convince. Stephanie Beacham also fares well as the governess, although her character is sketched in far less detail. The two children are played rather woodenly, but to be fair they (and the rest of the cast) are hampered by a pretty hideous script which thinks it is approximating the style of talking in England in Victorian times, with lots of "pray tell me" and "you scoundrel" type of dialogue, and nobody ever uses contractions, which sounds extremely affected. Another main problem with the movie is that it is... well, just a bit low on events. Winner goes a bit overboard on the symbolism with shots of dolls without eyes, small animals dead or dying, or childhood toys found covered in maggots (gasp!). It's almost like he's copied his ideas from "The Innocents", (recalling a great scene when a cockroach crawls out of the mouth of a cherub statue), but he doesn't really need to do this as there is no mystery about how and why the children are acting in the way that they do, whereas in "The Innocents" we are trying to ascertain what is true and what is imagined. Here, it's all quite obvious.

Obviously filmed on location in Britain in the early 1970's (I know it's a period setting, but that golden age of British horror movies - the time of the famous Hammer Horror style - is unmistakeable!), the film is certainly beautiful to look at. The action is set in lush forests and gardens, as well as the impressively period looking country mansion. Highlights are of course based around much corset ripping and a certain amount of sado-masochistic goings on between the two adults, all of which is spied upon by the two charges, ultimately corrupting them with a twisted view of the relationship between love and death, as much as an interest in kinky thrills. Interestingly, the two children seem an awful lot older in this film than they actually turned out to be in "The Innocents", but I suppose having them as pre-teens would have made too much of the material un-filmable.

There's no supernatural element at all (as the cast are all still alive in this movie!), so it's just a dark romp through sordid and sexy goings on at a country estate, culminating in two deaths, and two very messed-up children. And of course, because of "The Innocents", everybody knows that there can only be one ending, so there's no surprises there. It tries to be shocking (children copying the perversions of adults-gasp!) but it really plays that aspect pretty safe. But again, it does look lovely - there's no substitute for filming in location on a gorgeous British country estate. And the sight of Stephanie Beacham when the dead body of Miss Jessell is discovered is one of the more bizarre images in period horror cinema - you won't forget that shot!

Sadly, due to the coarseness in handling the overall idea, it is mostly a rather uninvolving story, but director Michael Winner goes into it all with gusto, so it's an interesting one none the less.

4 out of 5 stars Brando Makes This Work.......2007-06-24

Chilling, tense, compelling take on The Turn of the Screw. Brando plays a ruffian gardener/caretaker who has some of his very own ideas about life, love, and nature. He has totally under his spell the two newly-orphaned children living in the house, as well as their buxom nanny. The story is fascinating from the first scene and never lets up. Danger is ever-present, yet when it strikes you are shocked and surprised. Some of the sex scenes between Brando and a lovely young Stepahnie Beacham push the envelope, to the point where you would almost call this softcore, because of the exposed personal parts and the S&M nature of some of these scenes. Some also might be disturbed by the two adolescent children playing at some of these scenarios, they having spied on the couple at night. But none of that is gratuituous, it is all part of the story, and if that doesn't bother you you will love the film.

A prime candidate for cult status (it even spawned a sequel), this apocalyptic 1995 horror flick belongs in the darker corners of the comedy-horror sub-genre that includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mimic, and Phantoms--and like those movies it's a mixed blessing with some highlights worth savoring.

This one's got Christopher Walken in its favor, starring as the Angel Gabriel, who's really mad at God for allowing humans into heaven (because, you see, humans have souls and angels don't, and God plays favorites). Gabriel takes his anger out on the human race, coming to Earth to capture the soul of the most evil human alive in an effort to defeat the "good" angels that remain in God's good graces. One of the good angels is played by Eric Stoltz, who captures the evil soul before Walken does and transfers it into the body of a little girl. Are you with us so far? Don't worry if you're not, because writer-director Gregory Widen filled The Prophecy with so many wild ideas that he didn't bother to connect them to a coherent plot.

Add Viggo Mortensen as the devil and Elias Koteas as a priest-turned detective who's tracking Walken and it's clear that Widen was attempting something ambitious here. He nearly succeeded, since The Prophecy jumpstarts its heaven-and-hell rivalry with enough action, humor, and intelligence to make the movie sufficiently entertaining. It was enjoyable enough to entice Walken back for the sequel, so if you're into this kind of thing, this one's a keeper. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a Theological War Film.......2007-06-10

Horror? Bah, I say. It asks the question "Why does God love us the most, and why doesn't he love the angels as much?" Of course, you don't really get an answer, because who can really know the mind of God? Christopher Walken is fabulous (this actually might be his iconic role, once we look back on everything). Well worth the time and the thought. Highest rating.

5 out of 5 stars Check Your Haloes At The Door..........2007-05-24

Christopher Walken (The Dead Zone, Sleepy Hollow, Pulp Fiction) is the angel Gabriel, here on earth in mortal form, in order to find and acquire the darkest soul to ever live. Walken is his usual mixture of good / evil / funny / scary. He plays Gabe like a cool hitman w/ angelic abilities. Virginia Madsen (Candyman) is believable in her schoolteacher role, as is Elias Koteas as the ex-priest turned cop, Tom Dagget. We even get Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction, The Fly 2) as the angel Simon, and Adam Goldberg (Saving Private Ryan) as Gabriel's human slave! Even Amanda Plummer (another Pulp Fiction alum) pops up as a servant for Gabriel's use! If that's not enough, we even have Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn himself) as satan! All of these folks combine to make THE PROPHECY a classic! The little girl, Mary (Moriah Silver Dove Snyder) is convincingly innocent, and NOT a whiny brat or a trash-talking smarta$$, breaking w/ the usual hollywood idea of childhood as a time for being utterly annoying! How refreshing! Spiritual themes like God, heaven, hell, angels, immortality, souls, etc. are treated w/ respect and dignity, while keeping things exciting, frightening, and mysterious. I don't think I've seen a movie do that since THE EXORCIST and THE OMEN back in the 70s! Highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars witty, intriguing.......2007-01-19

Christopher Walkin was made to play Gabriel. He has some great dialogue to work with. The plot is riveting. Viggo was amazing as Satan.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, transfer not so good.......2006-11-26

I won't go into the movie's worth as entertainment here - suffice to say that I think it's awesome and well worth 5 stars. But in this review I'm focusing on the technical aspects which I feel detract from the DVD.

This DVD (ASIN: 6305268819) features a transfer that is known as 'matted widescreen' which works fine on smaller 4:3 TVs, but which looks awful on larger screen or widescreen TVs. I believe that every DVD today should be made in 'anamorphic widescreen' format so that the image is enhanced for viewing on a larger screen. If it's not then I think that the low image quality should be clearly marked in some way, as the lack of an anamorphic transfer makes a big difference in quality. In the case of this particular movie the image is very poor mostly due to the matted widescreen format that results in what's known as 'gutterboxing' (black bars all around the image) when the movie is played on widescreen TVs. Some TVs allow zooming in to fill the screen in cases like this, but then the image becomes very grainy - so much so that it's probably better to watch it in the 'gutterboxed' mode.

So in conclusion, those with the older standard 4:3 TVs under 30 inches probably won't notice any loss of resolution. But for folks like me with big screen TVs I advise waiting until this movie gets an updated DVD treatment. Alternatively, if you own a DVD player that can play region 2 discs, the British version (ASIN: B000069JE7 available from Amazon.co.uk) is an anamorphic transfer.

4 out of 5 stars Gabriel played by Walken is priceless, Viggo Mortensen as the Devil, wow.......2006-11-11

The movie in itself is lacking or rather the story is cheesy. So setting that aside it is, however creative and amusing, a must own. Its about the never ending war between heaven and hell, angles have come down both fallen and still in service to God to walk the earth hunting down a recently dead evil soul that Lucifer wants for his side. One angle found it and hid it inside a small girl. An ex priest to be now detective is following this case because of a past connection and chasing down the clues only to be slowed down by Gabriel who wants to start his own war. In turn a deal with the Devil was made.
Its a fun movie, I enjoy watching it over and over again.
