Considering the lofty expectations that preceded it, The Matrix Reloaded triumphs where most sequels fail. It would be impossible to match the fresh audacity that made The Matrix a global phenomenon in 1999, but in continuing the exploits of rebellious Neo (Keanu Reeves), Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) as they struggle to save the human sanctuary of Zion from invading machines, the codirecting Wachowski brothers have their priorities well in order. They offer the obligatory bigger and better highlights (including the impressive "Burly Brawl" and freeway chase sequences) while remaining focused on cleverly plotting the middle of a brain-teasing trilogy that ends with The Matrix Revolutions. The metaphysical underpinnings can be dismissed or scrutinized, and choosing the latter course (this is, after all, an epic about choice and free will) leads to astonishing repercussions that made Reloaded an explosive hit with critics and hardcore fans alike. As the centerpiece of a multimedia franchise, this dynamic sequel ends with a cliffhanger that virtually guarantees a mind-blowing conclusion. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars "me, me, me ...... me too".......2007-06-23

The Matrix Reloaded has one thing that simply stands out throughout the movie - complete eye candy. Its true, while the first Matrix brought about new origins in movie animation and cgi, Matrix Reloaded takes it x100. The action is amazing, it will blow you away almost to the point that you've had enough. Major action and visual effects fans will dig this. True harcorde fans of the Matrix story might be dissapointed.

The story almost takes a backseat to the action. The plot is dragged out throughout huge action scenes that seem to never end - example- Neo vs dozens of Smiths lasting forever, and the highway chase that lasts as long as I-95 runs. While these scenes are truly spectacular, they take away from the story somewhat. Gone is the great in depth exploration into the Matrix. Very little is newly introduced to us about the Matrix, and the story now focuses on Neo and the rest of humanity saving itself from destruction, both from the machines in the real world, and Smith in the Matrix world. We do get to meet the architect of the Matrix, though not as astounding as one would think.

Overall this is not as good as the first one, but you'll still want to see it to see how the trilogy continues. If you love never-ending action and cgi, you will want to watch this over and over and over. The movie is worth buying on that regard. As for a compeleing story, you might be ok stopping after the first Matrix and being satisfied. If you do see Reloaded, you'll have to see Revolutions too, since both technically are one big film split into 2 parts.

2 out of 5 stars Cool Action but Silly and Pretentious.......2007-05-19

The first MATRIX film was interesting but I felt they held too much info back for too long. By the time you understood the story, the movie was over.

By the second movie, THE MATRIX RELOADED, the filmmakers got caught up in their own pretentious premise. The dialogue just plays flat and weird. Keanu Reeves looks either deep or...blank. Couldn't tell which most of the time. The truly-odd "Rave Scene" was so primitive and even bestial that I wondered why humans needed to survive at all. Maybe the machines were on to something to exterminate such rampant barbarism and partying.

The action scenes were very cool and the special effects extremely interesting. I'm sure the filmmakers turned to talented effects people to shoot those scenes.

If only they had turned to talented sci-fi writers to flesh out their script.

Needless to say, this was the last MATRIX movie I saw in a theatre.

1 out of 5 stars An Exercise In Franchise Annihilation..........2007-04-09

"Reloaded" turns out to be a whopping disappointment. I caught the midnight preview of this movie and was expecting a satisfying sequel building from the strengths of the first Matrix film, which was an instant sci-fi/action classic. Instead, we were treated to a terribly botched effort. Apparently, the first film was a fluke for the Wachowskis, whose writing and character building skills simply evaporated after the smash success of the first film. Alongside the likewise awful "Matrix: Revolutions", the once promising team proceeded to demolish the legacy of what could have been the next "Star Wars Trilogy". Hence, a potential all-time classic series of Matrix films was not to be. What went wrong?

Plenty.

For starters, the original characters were not refreshed or developed adequately. We fully expect to see Neo's awesome powers on full display, and here the Wachowskis do not disappoint. However, the Neo character remains virtually the same, his realization that the Oracle's prediction was correct and that he truly is "The One" failed to boost his confidence or convince him to truly lead his comrades towards victory against the machines ( Imagine Luke Skywalker in "Return Of The Jedi" still behaving like a whining farm boy). Instead, Neo takes a back seat to Morpheus again. The relationship between Neo and Trinity is still flat, I sensed no on-screen chemistry between the two at any time.

The supporting cast have a small degree of development, but it is too little, too late as the movie plods along between killer (if not cliché) action sequences. Central character Agent Smith is altered into a more powerful "Smith", OK. This classic villain has been ruined by an awful script long on existential rhetoric but short on captivation. The CGI "Squidies" are badly overdone here as well as in "Revolutions". We expect to see more sophisticated and diverse machines introduced, especially in a world of machines such as this. Instead, the squidies are the only muscle the machine empire can produce to combat the Zionites. The program-run-amok characters such as the Merovingian are silly and lame.

This movie was a financial blockbuster due mainly to the action sequences, which were superb despite the overdone CGI effects. It's a shame that the excellent storyline introduced in the first movie was thoroughly trashed beginning with this sequel and continuing into the third and (thankfully) final installment.

5 out of 5 stars Good Series.......2007-04-02

A must have. Has some great scenes.
Not quite as good overall as the first installment but still great.

4 out of 5 stars It's a (good) MOVIE, not a pholosophy book........2007-03-03

First off, I will say that I enjoyed these movies as great entertainment.

I realize that for some people, these movies are vehicles for philosophy for you. We each have different vehicles that work for us to learn the truths of life, so I am trying not to be too arrogant in my comments, but I am just flabbergasted that so many people follow the text and slightest nuance (intended or not) as if it were holy writ.

It really scares me that our culture has become so sanitized and bland, that people are looking to movies like this for meaning. Sure, there is a little there, but it is smashed in with new-age mumbo and eye-candy. You want to learn of life and truth? Read Ghandi, read the words and thoughts of truly great men. Or really take the plunge into profound searchings for the truth and meaning and read Christ, Buddha, or Mohammed.

You want things in movie form? Watch Ghandi, the killing fields, Hotel Rwanda, or Schindler's list, etc.

But it you really want to learn philosophy, the kind that really matters, go seek out those who suffer more than you can possibly imagine, look in their eyes and hear their stories. Keep your heart open and let them touch you. Cry with them. It is amazing how fully life begins to change.

There is so much more out there than what is found in this movie! Put the video games, football games, and beer aside for Just a moment, and try to truly see. It gets addictive, trust me.

André De Toth directed seven of producer-star Randolph Scott's Westerns; The Stranger Wore a Gun is the most disappointing, especially since its original 3-D is now moot. That gimmicky process obliged the one-eyed director to concentrate on framing every shot with foreground clutter (and matte eerily mobile "rocks" onto the chase scenes), as well as dream up reasons for people to shove torches and hurl water pitchers at the camera. Scott's trajectory takes him from Confederate officer in league with Quantrill's Raiders to riverboat gambler to undercover detective. On the upside, Claire Trevor is always welcome as a Western leading lady, and George Macready as chief villain. Macready's henchmen are the prestellar Lee Marvin--who grossed out '50s audiences with his 3-D spitting of tobacco juice while lolling in a chair--and Ernest Borgnine, who gets into a laughing duel with Alfonso Bedoya over which one is really "The Face That Kills." --Richard T. Jameson

He takes a job on the stage line that Mourret is trying to steal gold from ... When Mourret's men kill a friend of his he sets out to get Mourret and his men ... When his plan to have another gang get Mourret fails, he has to go after them himself --- Yep, that's both Lee Marvin & Ernest Borgnine in supporting roles --- from the book "Yankee Gold" by John W. Cunningham --- This western cannot be compared with Scott's best like the ones he made with Boetticher, but it is stll enjoyable --- And Mr. Scott was secure enough in his stardom that he gave good lines and depth to the younger actors in the film.

Cunningham (Book Author), Kenneth Gamet (Screenwriter), Lester White (Cinematographer), Gene Havlick (Editor), James Sweeney (Editor), George Brooks (Art Director) - - - - the cast includes Randolph Scott (Jeff Travis), Claire Trevor (Josie Sullivan), Joan Weldon (Shelby Conroy), George Macready (Jules Mourret), Alfonso Bedoya (Degas), Lee Marvin (Dan Kurth), Ernest Borgnine (Bull Slager), Pierre Watkin (Jason Conroy), Joseph Vitale (Dutch Mueller), Clem Bevans (Jim Martin), Paul Maxey (Poley), Frank Scannell (Red Glick), Reed Howes (Harve Comis), Roscoe Ates (Milt Hooper), Edward Earle (Jeb), Guy Wilkerson (Ike) - - - - Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today ... Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously ,,, would not settle for anything less than his best ... same was true in his personal life.

Special footnote, George Randolph Scott better known as Randolph Scott, was an American film actor whose career spanned the sound era from the late 1920s to the early 1960s ... his popularity grew in the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in such films as "Gung Ho"! (1943) and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938); but he was especially famous for his numerous Westerns including "Virginia City" (1940) with Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart, "Western Union" (1941) with Robert Young and "Ride the High Country" (1962) with Joel McCrea (a coin was flipped to see whether Scott or McCrea would receive top billing, and Scott won despite having a slightly smaller role) ... his long fistfight with John Wayne in "The Spoilers" (1942) was frequently cited by critics and the press as the most thrilling ever filmed; they were fighting over Marlene Dietrich ... another smash hit film together that same year called "Pittsburgh" (1942) once again with Dietrich, Scott and Wayne --- Daniel Webster defines "Legend", as being a notable person, or the stories told about that person exploits --- well by the time Randolph Scott made his best films he had long established himself as a legend in the film industry --- they say practice makes perfect, if that is true by 1958 at 60 years of age he was the master with these oaters from the 50s ... "The Cariboo Trail" (1950), "The Nevadan" (1950), "Colt .45" (1950), "Santa Fe" (1951), "Sugarfoot" (1951), "Fort Worth" (1951), "Man in the Saddle" (1951), "Carson City" (1952), "The Man Behind the Gun" (1952), "Hangman's Knot" (1952), "Thunder over the Plains" (1953), "The Stranger Wore a Gun" (1953), "Ten Wanted Men" (1954), "Riding Shotgun" (1954), "The Bounty Hunter" (1954), "Rage at Dawn" (1955), "Tall Man Riding" (1955), "A Lawless Street" (1955), "Seven Men from Now" (1956), "Seventh Cavalry" (1956), "Decision at Sundown: (1957), "Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend" (1957), "The Tall T" (1957), "Buchanan Rides Alone" (1958), "Ride Lonesome" (1959), "Westbound" (1959), "Comanche Station" (1960) --- Scott's age seemed to matter little, they only came to see another Randolph Scott film and always got their money's worth --- Scott's films were good and getting better becoming classics --- so if you wonder "What Ever Happened To Randolph Scott", just rent or purchase one of his films and you'll see he's never left us.

2 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Scott Western That Could Have Been More.......2005-07-22

Any Western boasting the likes of Randolph Scott, Ernest Borgnine, and Lee Marvin should be an all-time great, but Stranger Wore A Gun proves that his films with Budd Boetticher were far superior to most of his films, and makes you wonder what Scott's Boetticher films would have been like if he'd had such great co-stars as he did in this film.

Scott plays a former Confederate spy who joins with an old war colleague to stage a gold robbery in Arizona. Scott changes his mind, and tries to stop the robbery. George Macready, playing the bad guy, is his usual despicable self, and Marvin and Borgnine are solid as usual as two of Macready's gang.

One of the problems with this film is that it was filmed for 3D, which is obnoxious and distracting, as objects and people point toward the screen for an effect which is no longer viable. The dialogue is also not as cleverly pointed as it was in Scott's better films.

Stranger Wore A Gun is not a bad film, but not in Scott's top five best Westerns, and possibly not even his top ten.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Western Starring Randolph Scott!!.......2002-09-11

Lt. Jeff Travis was a spy for renegade rebel William Clark Quantrell - who had torched and looted his way to a fortune. Now he's a wanted man - dodging his past loke so many bullets in THE STRANGER WORE A GUN. Travis arrives in Prescott, Arizona just as the law is leaving, and he finds the ex capital strangled by wholesale lawlessness. Holding the tightest grip is Confederate loyalist Jules Maurette. Maurette also rode with Quantrell - and takes credit for having once saved Travis' life. Stealing yankee gold is legitmate business to him - and with Travis' help as a spy, he hopes to "divert" pounds of it being shipped through Prescott aboard the Conroy Stage & Freight Company. With Lifelong flame Josie pulling his holster toward California and with the stage owner's daughter pushing his heart toward justice, Travis rides the narrow gold-route to a surprising depot. A Gold-meets-gun tale of wild west intrigue starring Randolph Scott and Claire Trevor.

Description

Due to a clerical mix-up (his police file has been confused with another McLaughlin) Bobby McLaughlin (Brendan Fraser) is wrongfully accused of a murder he didn't commit. Despite his pleas of innocence not even his father (Martin Sheen) believes him. With a minor crime already on his record, and an incompetent defense attorney, Bobby is convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. But a suppressed lie detector test that could have freed him convinces his father that Bobby is indeed innocent. Now he begins a fierce struggle to free his son from prison. "Presumed Guilty" is a chilling indictment of a faulty judicial system and an inspirational tale of love and reconciliation between father and son.

4 out of 5 stars Presumed Guilty without a second thought.......2005-07-08

Presumed Guilty is a pretty decent movie about one man's relationship with his father, and how adversity brought them closer together. Based on a true story, its basically about the core elements of a family trying to stay strong while their son is in jail for a crime he didn't commit. Brendan Fraser plays Robert, a high school drop out, who at the age of twenty buys crack and drinks his life away on a lousy salarly from his pizza delivery job. Martin Sheen plays the foster father, who doesn't believe his adopted son is any good, but wants to love him nevertheless.

Their relationship comes to a head when a boy is murdered the particular night Brendan comes back home wasted. The only eye witness to the murder is a fifteen yr old boy, who swears Brendan was the one doing the killing. Although Brendan is clean, his card is accidently pulled from the police archives as someone elses with the same name. Just slightly different spelling. No one believes Brendan, not even his father until Brendan is convicted for the crime and sentanced to fifteen years at Sing Sing. Enraged, Martin Sheen tries to get Brendan out, but the damage has been done.

Martin goes to the police, but the homicide detective that sentanced Brendan refuses to admit the mistake even though he knows he was wrong. Not even the presiding Judge or sentancing Lawyer will admit their fatal mistake. Not until Martin pulls in his cop friend from out of the precint will anyone even begin to listen to him. So begins a five year Campaign to free his son, one that cements their father-son relationship and causes them to discover a friendship they never believed could or would exist. Five years later, (and now twenty-five, buff and gorgeous) Brendan finally is given another trial. He is declared innocent and let out.

Rather long and drawn out, the picture gets fuzzy and the sound quality is pretty bad. Presumed Guilty is also one of Brendan's first movies, so its not the best of his works, also the accent he tries to do falters at times, and comes off more of a lisp than anything else. He's still sexy though, that will never change.

Martin Sheen is pretty good also, his scenes are done with a such finesse that when he cries one can actually feel the heartbreak he's trying to convey. A truly remarkable actor.
For both these actors and true fans of Brendan I recommmand this movie, however if you're just a casual Fraser fan i'd look elseware for one of his better movies.

These clones are identical replicas of members of the top 500 of politics and big business. Raised to adulthood, they are then frozen and cryogenically stored so that their body parts can be used to give more or less eternal life to the chosen elite.

The plan is to keep these clones in a state of almost childlike innocence and deny them any knowledge of the real world outside. They are brainwashed with dreams of a mythical place called "America" where (so they are told) they will go if they are lucky enougb to be selected.

A series of unplanned accidents leads to one of the clones finding out too much and becoming curious. One day he escapes from the clone farm and comes looking for answers in the "real" America... EXTRAS:
A 40 minute in depth interview with film's director, discussing his career to date and the making of CLONUS

The film's theatrical trailer

2 out of 5 stars Clonus - Just Rent "The Island" Instead........2006-04-06

I bought this movie, as I realized after watching The Island that it was a remake, and I wanted to see the orginial one more time. It took me some time to find the movie as I had almost forgotten the title which I had seen on TV way back when. So I bought it so that I could see the whole movie now that i am older. The movie was just fair, and is kind of corney of course. This has all the makings of a low-budget flick. The story is interesting, but not enough to warrant buying this DVD. Buy The Island instead, the effects and storyline are better. The makers of the Island did Clonus a favor by remaking it. It is a great storyline, but skip buying this one.

4 out of 5 stars "Cult" film worth looking into.......2005-10-07

As I watched Michael Bay's "The Island," a movie whose American reviews in the mainstream media were far too dour, a feeling came over me I had seen this movie before. Lo and behold "The Island" is indeed a remake of Clonus. I eagerly await the DVD release of Michael Bay's latest for I plan to have a winter rainy-day event at my home - back to back viewings of the movies to entertain friends. News reports say the makers of "The Island" failed to buy the rights to Clonus and this piece of Hollywood intrigue adds topical interest.

On its own the best part of Clonus is its great premise, clones raised for spare body parts for the rich and politicians. Made in 1979 the movie is prescient and intriguing. Having said that, it's not a great movie. It's cheesy. But overlong scenes such as the searching of the office are balanced with some of the scariest scenes I've seen in a long while. For example the scene where we first see doctors terminate a clone. The doctors act with such practice and ease you think the actors did this for their day jobs.

I give it four stars because of its great premise, appearances by familiar medium level television personages, social relevance and the fact that I have to give a break to a first time director working on a $250,000 budget. Fiveson, the director, gives an interesting interview on another track of the DVD, and I think people interested in film-making might be find the DVD package worthwhile even if not particularly interested in Sci-Fi. For those not interested in what I've stated, I give the movie a fun two stars, not something to put at the top of your list, but if you have some extra cash and want to buy something different for your library, especially if you are interested in 1970s low budget movies.

5 out of 5 stars CLONUS is THE ISLAND.......2005-07-06

Absolutely, the movie that Michael Bay has remade and not discussed the matter with the media!
See it first!

5 out of 5 stars Put aside your prejudices and watch the movie!.......2005-06-26

First up - this is a great sci-fi conspiracy movie. Way ahead of its time in its critique of science gone mad, the class system and the american dream - proved undisputedly by the new hollywood blockbuster from Micheal "Armageddon" Bay, being a virtual remake! (Uncredited of course!)

Of course its a very low budget movie so there are inevitable shortcomings but clear out all the MST3K prejudices and you're left with an unsung entry in the genre - even the New York Times placed the movie in the same hallowed company as Dawn of the Dead" (1978), Larry Cohen's "It's Alive!" (1974) and Tobe Hooper's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974), among many others, all drawing on the trauma of Vietnam and the rising fear of consumerist conformism to spin their dark fables of American life.

Now I can't think of a better recommendation than that!

2 out of 5 stars dumb clones.......2005-04-20

Let's face it, clones are rock stupid and this movie proves it. A half-witted clone escapes from a facility that breeds and raises clones so their parts can be harvested if their counter part ever needs them. In a stroke of unbelievable coincidence he runs into the the man who he was cloned from who did not know he had been cloned. So this man tries to help his clone escape his equally micro-minded clone girlfriend who ends up getting a labotomy which doesn't do much to aid the situation. Well, it's all a rather stupid mess and the memories of it I've brought up thus far have made me ill enough. In short, about all this movie is good for is a few laughs but it is a terrible piece of work.

3 out of 5 stars good fun, with no substance.......2003-10-20

this movie is about a man who is the only survivor of a bloody motorcycle war and is bent on escaping the law and his past, only to end up in the middle of another motorcycle war. this movie is about redemption as this time he sides with the good (a group of native americans fighting for their land) against men who are shadows of himself.

If the acting had been better anf the plot had less holes this could have been a truly great biker flick. As it is the movie is entertaining, despite its problems, but no great find.

3 out of 5 stars Rebel Run - motorcycle war.......2001-01-24

The hero of this movie is called "Bolt" (Richard Grieco) he comes with his motorcycle to a place owned by some indian. Bolt asks for motorcycle parts, but at the same time he is offered a job, fixing cars. Bolt helps the family out in a war against the motorcycle gang who wants the place. At the same time he helps the family, he falls in love with the daughter of the family (Sean Young). Bolt and the leader of the gang Billy Niles (Michael Ironside) are seen in a fight at the end of the movie "Jersey Style" as they said... like "chicken race"...but with chains and knives used to hurt the passing foe...

The movie was otherwise one of the best road movies I've seen. but it was sloppy made... the voice on someplaces was so low, that I had to turn the sound louder than normal... and the brightness changed on one or two places too even as the persons and scenery didn't move...(editing error?!)

the lenght of the movie is 1:28:44 instead of 93minutes that is written on the cover of the movie.

This isn't a review, but a way to find 'Matrix Reloaded' and 'Revolutions' for the US PSP (if curious).

It can be found in the UK, as all 3 Matrix UMD's are Region 0.

What I've found out is that the short list of Warner Bros UMD's are all Region 0, meaning they work on ALL PSP systems.
I've have tested this UMD on both my US Region 1 and Australian Region 4 PSP's, and they work fine.

I dig this flawed trilogy, and great to watch on the fly. Hope this helps fellow psp-ers.

4 out of 5 stars Keanu Reeves plays Buddha in black.......2006-05-28

Once again the graphics outstretched the story, and for this day and age the CGI did not exceed that of most movies. The continuing saga of the movie requires that you have seen the first one to get the proper background information. As with Keanu Reeves' portrayal of Siddhartha in "Little Buddha" (1994), this time a change of costume and he must deal with impermanence and the Vedic cycles. Super imposed on this gem of understanding is excessive action that would rival that of "Kung Pow! Enter the Fist" (2002).

Neo is supposed to be "The One" according to prophecy. According to Morpheus he is to lead the people out of bondage.

Is the oracle what she appears to be?

Will Neo, in the midst of endless kicking and shooting, go on to fulfill his destiny?

Or will the love of Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) interfere?

This story is not so comprehensive. It needs to be viewed as part of the series to make it worth viewing.
