Okay, I admit it, I'm an unashamed Madonna fan. I watch all of her movies and enjoy most of them. I do have to admit that some performances have been slightly 'raw', but in Dangerous Game, she shines brightly.

This is definitely an arthouse movie. You would need to enjoy indi and arthouse movies to appreciate this movie.

Dangerous Game has the motif of 'movie within a movie'....we see a movie being made and the behind the scenes footage.

In my opinion this is Madonna's finest acting performance. She brings so much to the character to give a mutlilayered performance.

Not just for Madonna fans - for all who enjoy indi/arthouse movies that make you think....

Dangerous Game.......2005-06-09

Ferrera is the guerilla filmmaker of modern cinema. His movies attack the established and the oppressors of society with ritualistic emotional chaos and a distorted anarchism, Dangerous Game is the ultimate proof of the violence of images in themselves: a film in which nothing happens and yet everything happens, a film director is making a film but everything is collapsing and the systems are failing, he cannot break down the walls that separate him from the images he wants to create just as Ferrera looks through the lens and sees himself, because cinema is the story of a man looking at his ultimate fate and trying desperately to save it. In Dangerous Game, the director, actor, actress are giving names but remain nameless and faceless, they are enslaved by their fate, as so often in Ferrera's cinema, there is an inability to function in an establishment, there is a desperate violence in humanity, expressed here through the director's emotional impotency and destructive realizations. Ferrera is cinema and Dangerous Game is all that it could have been.

It was really dramatic, and dark. Madonna did a good job as an actress. She played the emotional baggage very well. All of actors were veterans, and really put themselves into this film.

This is Madonna's best performance and one of the best performances by any screen actress for that matter. The film is very disturbing, yet so brilliant. It is sadly poetic in an exestential anti-transformative sort of Bataille-spiritual way. I love the film and love the DVD. It is a must have for any Madonna fan or Abel fan. And it is definately for any fan of classy, high-end, postmodern, underground narrative cinema. This is Abel's best film. Madonna and Abel are absolutely stunning and brilliant in this classic masterpiece of alternative cinema.

This movie is horrible and the DVD cover/summary completely misleads the viewer. It is not about an East LA gang - Mario never holds a gun in the entire movie (unlike the cover photo) - and it is not an action film. Mario plays a scrappy punk just out of prison who helps save a children's community center from being sold off and developed. He teaches a one-armed kid to play badminton! Don't be fooled by these other reviews - I actually saw it and laughed at how bad it is!

I think this movie always remind me about the story of my brother's life. Mario Lopez did a good acting and I really liked him as an actor especially all those movie that he made for the past like the story of Greg Louganis a former Olympic Medalist. Buy this movie i will recommended as FIVE STAR!

Mario's Big Break.......2001-05-01

This is a surprisingly thoughtful movie about a flawed, but decent young man torn between the life of easy money and upward mobility that a mob boss offers him or staying true to the impoverished community where he came from. Mario Lopez gives a very well-acted performance in what should be a star-making role for him. He also demonstrates the kind of charisma and physical presence to be an action hero in feature films. Hollywood producers should take note.

I have seen Mario on TV for years. So I thought of buying this DVD. After watching it I was truly insipred by the story and the acting in this movie. The story is great and original, and Mario is terrific. I am amazed that he hasn't hit the big screen in big way, yet. But with this movie if the right people are watching, he will, I am certain. He has all the making of a super action hero. I would definitely recommend this movie to people who like uplifting and inspiring stories.

This is one of those little movies that probably had a limited release and was probably seen mostly by people who frequent film festivals. It is a real find because if you watch it, your immediate conclusion will be: an excellent piece of cinema. The film's message is your a product of your environment and background. Joe is not a great kid but your sympathy will lie with him by the end of this film. The question you will ask is does this boy have a chance in life with the deck of cards he has been dealt with. My question is why is Frank Whalley not making any more films? Val Kilmer has never been better but most people probably don't even know he made this little gem. I thought it was competently and fluidly directed, written and acted. Its a low budget roots are evident but that actually adds to its appeal because its a film about real people in realistc situations. It is the type of film that is made in Europe. This film has a lot of merit and needs to be seen and appreciated.

I work with kids who come from similiar backgrounds. This film is right on. The actors gave award winning performances, the story is heart wrenching and very believable. If you are a Val Kilmer fan, you'll love his supporting role!

King of the Hill.......2004-02-11

This interesting independent movie directed by Frank Whalley is a worthwile and engaging coming of age story about Joe, a teenage boy (played by the unknown and excellent Noah Fleiss), who doesn`t seem to find his place in school, neighborhood and family. It doesn`t help that he has an abusive drunk father and a mother too busy to care, who let him constantly on his own and forcing him to make some (bad) choices.
This could have turned into a predictable, by-the-numbers tearjerker but thankfully the director tries to develop a deep and dry story, realistic and honest enough. The last scenes with Joe and his father are actually quite well-done, never becoming too sappy although they make for some moving and powerful moments.
Not a stellar picture, but it`s done with care and talent in all levels, turning it into an above average effort and a good directing debut for Whalley. There`s even some acting contributions by indie-stars like Ethan Hawke, John Leguizamo or Val Kilmer in supporting roles. Recommended.

I have seen this movie more than once,and always has left me feeling really sad.I think it was very well done. Gritty and tense, down to the home haircuts. Joe is a hero,in a losing battle for survival.I could not help but think of all the children, who are in this same situation now. Suffering in silence. Joe the King is an excellent movie about alcohol abuse,
and the devastation it leaves in its wake.I do'nt recommend this movie for children.

this movie was wonderful, NOAH FLEISS ,whom i never heard of before, was perfectly cast in this film about a boy who has nothing but himself. well thats not entirely accurate, he lives with his mom,dad and older brother, but no-one realy knows he is there. the family has nothing, Joe's father (val kilmer) is an abusive drunk who used to be the school janitor, and Joe was embarased by his job, his mom is to busy to even care about Joe, and his older brother just doesnt want him hanging around him. so what is a guy to do, in this case Joe desides that stealing is his answer, he is not a bad kid, he just does bad things and has no role model to keep him straight.
this was actor Frank Whalley's directorial debut, which he also wrote. supposed to be semi auto-biographical.
i was so impressed with this movie that i went out and bought it. and i want to find out all i can about Noah Fleiss (a definite star of the future) who plays the part perfectly.
the critics didn't like the movie too well, but it did win awards at the sundance film festival, so it cant be that bad.
near the end of the film, something happens that makes you stop and pay attention, and look at your own life, because sometimes you only get one chance.

Matthew Modine is a fantastic actor but lately it seems his fortunes have turned. He's rarely in anything decent and I guess his TV show "The Bedford Diaries" has been cancelled after 8 episodes. How low do you have to go to get cancelled from the WB?

Anyway, I was excited to find a film with Modine in the starring role that I had not seen.

This movie is terrible! I expected nothing and got it three-fold. I don't even know where to begin. The writing is bad and the characters just keep repeating their lines as though they can't believe the garbage they have to say. The plot is totally corny. I think the only reason I kept watching is because I don't recall ever seeing Modine so skeevy before and that was actually interesting.

But don't let that sway you.

Believe me, if I Could give this film negative stars, I totally would.

Ferrara one of the best American makers of foreign films.......2002-03-21

If you appreciate films by the likes of Antonioni, Lynch, Bunuel and Franju and you enjoy entering the inner worlds of characters then you'll probably find much to admire in this movie... it is unapolagetically dark, meandering, atmospheric, sometimes half baked, but ultimately haunting and utterly poignant. The DVD is bare bones with a decent transfer.

A deep dive into human loss and desperation.......2002-01-13

This movie is mainly about a guy who gets trapped into drug and alcohol abuse but manages to escape it. Somehow, as in real life, the your history will never be erased and he is trapped again in tragic circumstances with his new wife, pregnancy, memory loss from his 'wild days'. This film will not give much to viewer which has not experienced heavy drinking or drug use. For those which has bad experiences or any experience at all, will have a wake-up call and hopefully watch this film in awe. The film can be watched in the same session as 'Requiem for a dream', an uncredible film about drug abuse and the society that not only sells drugs 'illegally' but also a society in which one can get heavy drugs prescribed and legally.

There is nudity throughout especially with the scenes with Dennis Hopper, but this is not the kind of nudity I find attractive in the least with women degrading themselves and most of the scenes seems out of place and unnecessary (trust me on this). Well, I have sat through many a "bad movie" on HBO late at night and found the movie satisfactory because of certain actors I enjoy

watching (Hopper comes to mind)or some type of interesting plot devices. Well, the actors are all shallow individuals and not worth the time to watch WITH THE EXCEPTION of Claudia Shiffer who is both beautiful AND a caring person (MY dream come true!), and what makes this picture deserving of LESS than 1 star is the character of Matthew Modine (the actor I like) who repeatedly fails to take control of his life EVEN WHEN HE HAS SOMEONE AS WONDERFUL AS CLAUDIA'S character helping him! (...). Anyway, this movie depressed me for days and left me feeling sad and empty- don't say you weren't warned!

This is a movie filled with shouting. I thought that awful Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton film WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLLF was bad for that, but this takes the cake. Full of accusations, it is a sordid story about sordid people talking filthy and acting the same.

Madonna is still the same as in 1993, my but she stagnated! And this filmmaker is the original "Phatom Father," not Rudy Winston, father of another moviemaker (in connection with David Lynch), Barry Gifford. He read to his children, he cared for his children the best he knew how, but basically he was not a good person and in a bad field. Can being a gangster and killer the same as being a bad film maker? I really didn't see much difference. We are all as good as we know how to be when raising a family, but making sordid, vulgar films is as bad as killing other bad people in real life.

I saw very little redeeming value in this flick. So much in the dark, very little beauty of any kind -- just bad in every way.

Good acting, direction, makes this film.......2004-05-24

First off, I think that Harvey Keitel is one of the best actors around these days. I also confess that I like movies that are shot to really reflect the sounds, the silences, the dialog of real life. These are two reasons I really liked this film.

There is a minimal amount of music that wells up at dramatic times, swirling around and distracting us from the film. The sound editing is excellent as well, getting the sounds of real life just right.

I'm also a fan of films that touch on the making of a film. I don't think that such movies can help not disclosing a lot about the filmaker of the film that looks at making films. A bit autobiographical? One can't help but think so.

Add in Madonna's excellent performance, and you have a film to be recommended.

Snake Eyes aka Dangerous Game.

Un metteur en scène (Harvey Keitel) incapable de gérer sa vie et faire face à ses faiblesses tourne un film où sont mis en scène ses propres démons. Ses deux acteurs, une comédienne de télévision, Sarah Jenning, (jouée par Madonna), et Francis Burns, un ami alcoolique et drogué (James Russo) vont lui servir d'alter ego, et jouer pour lui l'histoire d'un couple marié en crise : après une vie dissolue remplie de drogues et de sexe, la femme a une révélation divine et veut changer pour donner un sens à son existence, alors que son mari ne supporte pas ce changement soudain qu'il ne comprend pas.
Les deux acteurs poussés par le metteur en scène qui veut la vérité dans le jeu, vont devoir aller au delà du simple jeu et plonger au plus profond d'eux même quitte à ne plus pouvoir faire la distinction entre leur personnage et eux même.
Utilisant le procédé du film dans le film, Abel Ferrara nous livre un jeu de miroir nous faisant sombrer dans la noirceur et le nihilisme le plus total. Il critique au passage Hollywood et son usine à `rêve' et dénonce quelques uns de ses visages : son côté glamour et superficiel, représenté par le personnage de Sarah Jennings, le côté Actor's studio mal digéré et utilisé de travers, qui veut que le comédien s'identifie tellement à son rôle qu'il le devient dans la vie, et la prétention et l'incapacité de certains `créateurs'.
Mais là où Ferrara réussit un coup de maître c'est que le spectateur à du mal à savoir qui joue quoi, tellement ses propres comédiens sont investis dans leur rôle. On peut supposer que les démons que met en scène le réalisateur sont les siens aussi, que Keitel et Russo lui servent aussi d'alter ego, que Madonna est également utilisée pour l'image publique qu'on véhicule d'elle - une actrice sans talent et célébrité à la réputation sulfureuse. Et le spectateur va donc assister à la transformation de l'actrice jouant une actrice jouant une femme qui trouve son salut. La `sanctification' finale sera celle de l'actrice s'intégrant totalement à son personnage, et devenant du coup une `bonne' actrice. Cet effet se répercutera sur Madonna elle même, excellente, qui est la révélation du film. Mais où se trouve la limite entre le film et la réalité ?
Snake Eyes a été salué par la critique mais complètement boudé par le public qui n'a pu - peut être avec raison, s'identifier dans ce film. Il n'en reste pas moins un chef d'Âœuvre injustement méconnu. A découvrir !

Attention, l'édition DVD anglaise ne comprend que les sous-titres en anglais...

A glimpes to Surrealism.......2003-08-16

This is a good films, although it barely released in 1993. People don' like this film because of Madonna is in it. They assume that it's a worst film. In fact, it's a film that makes people think of something serious in their life. Each character experienced and reflected their choice in the way of Hurly-burly and the of doubtfulness, and then can not distinguish what it's going on around them.

Madonna dose decent job in this film, so dose James Russo. It's not a typical Hollywood film. One should examine it if one has connected with reality and with understanding.

I saw this film in 1993 of Venice film festival, and I still remember it after decade. I do think I hardly see great performance in actors after this film.

DON'T SEE THE DIRECTOR'S CUT!.......2003-04-15

Dangerous Game is a brilliant work of modern cinema and I think it was clever for director Abel Ferrara to use the most contreversial and beautiful woman in the industry, Madonna. She gave a terrific performance as Sarrah Jennings. If you rent this, make sure you see the rated R version instead of the unrated because I bought this movie pre-viewed from a video store (the director's cut) and it was so explicit...there were x2 the violence, sexuality and nudity. This movie needs to be seen by Madonna fans to prove she can act very well.
